5-0 out of 5 stars Love this DVD
Amazing I'm so happy to see this DVD out here, we work hard
at extinct-attractions-club to bring out the history of theme
parks and this dvd is a great step in that direction!

4-0 out of 5 stars Let's Open the Disney Vault
I'm sure this "Best" DVD will continue to whet the appetites of all fans of the original Mickey Mouse Club. Since this won't be released until July, 2005, I can only give it a rating based on anticipation.I was exuberantly pleased with the Disney Treasury that contained the first week of the original MM Club and hope the marketing gurus will release the complete series.I'd also like to see DVDs released of the original "Spin and Marty" and "The Applegate Treasure," as well as other serials that appeared on the original MM Club show. These are classics and should be made available to the public! And yes, I'd even buy the "new" MMC shows too (70s or 80s): as they are nostalgic and classic in their own right. For Disney buffs, we can't get enough. So keep 'em coming!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, but WHERE are the 70's Mouseketeers?
Hey, Disney! This release is great, but how about some episodes or highlights of the terrific batch of Mouseketeers from the late 70's on DVD?That incredibly colorful, well-produced, dazzlingly choreographed and magnificently scored version of the NMMC has been hiding in the vaults for way too long. The energetic, super-talented kids (all 12 of them!) rival ANY of their 50's counterparts for talent and personality. Also, that was the first Mickey Mouse Club to feature Mouseketeers of color, and their cast album was the highest selling children's album of 1977.Sure a few episodes were shown on Vault Disney in the wee hours of the morning several years ago, but there are many of us who'd love to share that great show with the children in our lives.I certainly think they'd relate to it a lot more than this 50's one.People in their late 30's and early 40's have disposable income too!Bring back the Disco Mice! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A LONG OVER DUE FILM BIOGRAPHY OF WALT DISNEY
WALT: THE MAN BEHIND THE MYTH is a warm, entertaining, and fascinating look at both the public and private life of one of the greatest show-business men of the 20th Century....a man who is still influencing our world today. The never before released photos and film footage alone make this a "must" purchase. If the production has one fault, it may be that it leaves the viewer wanting more such glimpses into the life of Walt Disney. A great companion video would be THE HAND BEHIND THE MOUSE: THE UB IWERKS STORY.

5-0 out of 5 stars The touching and definitive story about Walt Disney
I am a Disney fan plain and simple. I grew up watching "The Wonderful World of Disney", going to Disneyland more than six times in my life and visiting Walt Disney World once. I buy Disney DVD's and other products from the Disney line. However, I knew a little about the man who created the "magic" and after viewing this outstanding DVD about the life of Walt Disney, I feel like I know him so much more.

This is an account about the life and thoughts of the man who created a world where people are more happier today because of the dreams shared by Walt Disney. The film begins with Walt's childhood in Missouri and California. There are family films that are shown for the first time with the permission of the Disney family that show the love and warmth not only of Walt, but of his family and friends.

The film also tells about his early workings in creating cartoon characters, working and paying his dues in the entertainment industry of the 1920's and finally with a bold stroke, creating his own studio where Walt could finally create much of the magic that we enjoy today. The film also tells about the work and creation that went into full length animated movies such as "Snow White", "Bambi", "Pinnochio", and other classic masterpieces. Also shown is the vision that led to the construction of Disneyland and Walt's final dream...Epcot Center.

The film also has moving interviews with intimate Disney family members such as Walt and Lillian's daughter Diane, grandson Walt Elias Disney Miller, grandaughters, grandnieces and grandnephews. Close family friends such as Art Linkletter, Dean Jones, Ray Bradberry, and the late Buddy Epsen are interviewed as well as early live Disney stars such as Dean Jones.

Each give a wonderful insight into Walt Disney and all still show loving devotion to him even 37 years after his death.

Walt Disney definitely made the world a better place to live him and we can thank him for giving us a magical place to escape to everyday by watching the films, going to the amusement parks and so much more, because of his magical immagination.

Every Disney fan will enjoy watching this DVD over and over again.

Very highly recommended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars DVD Review
I bought this DVD at Disneyland in the summer of 2003. At the time I was told by the sales clerk that the DVD was absolutely amazing. I didn't put much stock into what he said as he worked for Disney but when I got home and had the chance to watch it I was absolutely amazed at how good it was! It is a very well produced "inside" story on Walt's life and work. The DVD includes interviews with many people who worked with him as well as never released family videos. It is so good that I have watched it several times and come away feeling inspired each time. If you like Disneyland/Disneyworld then you will be more than pleased with this purchase (there are lots of goodies on it for the big Disney fan).

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing But Disney Propaganda!
This book is Disney Propaganda which was written to cover
up the truth which was exposed by Marc Eliot in his book:
"Walt Disney: Hollywood's Dark Prince"

5-0 out of 5 stars Walt will live forever.
I am a big Walt Disney fan. I can't get enough of the behind the scenes and personal stuff about him. This video is just the ticket. This film is so well made and is so well put together. Just as good if not better than the wonderful "Frank and Ollie". Finally after all these years we get a good in depth look at the man himself. I was overcome with feelings of warmth and comfort seeing Walt in the home movies. Watching his family and friends speak about him I could almost hear that cough coming down the hall myself. I am lucky enough to own a copy of this on DVD as well and it has very nice extras. Hard to find but worth it. Do get a copy of the VHS before it goes away. Don't miss out on this treasure. ... Sid and Marty Krofft created many wildly creative series for Saturday morningtelevision. One of the most memorable was Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, the storyof a sea creature, Sigmund, who runs away from his family's cave by the ocean andis adopted by two human children. This DVD from Kid Rhino showcases the first 4 of 29 episodes that originally ran from1973 to 1975, and gave us quite interesting characters like Sigmund, Big Mama, and Sheldon the Sea Genie (played by comedian Rip Taylor). The shows are chock full of pop culture references from the time period, and feature many familiar voices behind the monsters. Although the plotrarely changes (the kids must keep Sigmund hidden from the other humans aroundthem, despite the trouble that he causes), they are all enjoyable to watch. Each episode concludes with a song written by the team of Boyce and Hart(responsible for many of the Monkees' early hits) and sung by star Johnnie Whitaker(Jody on Family Affair). Of course, the theme song, "Friends," is widely rememberedand as hummable as it ever was.The foam rubber and goggle-eyed monsters are far from scary, but do provide aglimpse into the past, when high-tech special effects weren't necessary to createfantasy worlds. The show revels in its simplicity, and it appears as if the actors had as much fun making the series as we do watching it. --Zachary Lively ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sid and Marty Did It Again
Sigmund was a misfit sea monster rejected by his relatives. Seems that he didn't want to scare humans like his folks did! A couple of boys come across Sigmund on the beach. They're scared at first, but Sigmund proves to be a great friend. Problem is, the boys have to hide him from everyone else. This is not an easy task, as Sigmund's relatives keep popping up to cause havoc. I don't think this Krofft show is a popular as the others they created, but it was a pleasant half-hour of TV on Saturday mornings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sigmund is not a symbol of evil
In almost every Sid and Marty Krofft show, the kid protagonists start out in the normal world, and then stumble upon some sort of psychadelic Wonderland (a la Alice), which of course can be read as a kind of representation of the Jungian subconscious...or the experience of being on drugs. The effect it achieved (and the fact that it was live-action, and not an animated program was crucial to this!) was that it encouraged children to imagine that there was much more to the world than adult society would have them believe. Watching a kid who looked a lot like them, living a life that looked a lot like theirs, discovering another world just under the surface must seem to the imaginitive mind of a child at least somewhat believable. This blurring of fantasy and reality is an important part of the formula...I know that part of the power HR Puff N Stuff had on me when I first saw it was that I almost couldn't believe it was a real TV show.
Sigmund and the Sea Monsters differs slightly from shows like HR Puff N Stuff in that the magical world the kids discover and their normal, 1970s suburban beach neighborhood occupy literally the same space. It is not the children, but the sea monster who is the stranger in the strange land, offering a more direct social critique than other Krofft programs. Sigmund is a childish, lisping symbol of the human Id; the kids try and try to keep him under wraps, designating the club house as a place where he can live without getting in trouble, but he always gets out or bubbles over, revealing himself to, say, a pretty neighbor of the boys who take care of him. Like a children's version of Cthulu, Sigmund comes out of the ocean as a threat to normal, decent society. But of course, Sigmund isn't a symbol of evil; he's just a goofy, lovelorn, scared and misunderstood mess of a creature whose eccentricity and purity of spirit are to be admired and appreciated. I hope kids who watch this show can learn from it to appreciate their own inner sea monsters. : )

5-0 out of 5 stars Sigmund is back.
This is a great dvd, and Rhino did a much better job than with the H.r Pufnstuf dvd. These episodes are funny and represent the series well. The menu is very easy to navigate, and the picture looks great. My favorite characters are Burp and Slurp, and they're at their funniest here. The interview is very funny, and there's even an advertisement for a submarine ride. Pick it up today, you'll be glad you did!

5-0 out of 5 stars a classic
This is a great show cheesy but good this is the only Kroft show that I like more then H.R. Pufnstuf! Its worth the wait!

5-0 out of 5 stars Saturday morning, 1975...
Okay, I'm 34 and I bought it. Why? Because when I was 8 years old Sigmund & the Seamonsters kept me glued to the TV. Like most of the Krofft programs (namely this and Land of the Lost) it was just different from everything else on. Until recently I had racked my brain trying to remember some of the titles (Bugaloos, Kaptain Kool & the Kongs, Dr. Shrinker, the one about the dune buggy) but now they are all over the internet. These shows were far from cheesy to a little 70s kid. They had a profound effect on the way I grew up. Magic, dreams and imagination are much tougher to come by in todays children. It's all spelled out in digital glory. Before long you'll be able to play Shrek on your X-box 2 and it'll look better than the film. It's amazing to go back to a time before there was Playstation...or even Atari. Just a box of sugary cereal and a Krofft program. Take me back!!
I save these for when I'm in a special mood some saturday morning. I pop this in the DVD and get transported to a more simple time. It's really bizarre the effect these have on me. My first thought when I ordered it was that I'd wasted my money on a little kid's show I used to watch and it would not match my memories of those wonderful times. Well, surprize! These are better now than they were. The sense of nostalgia is staggering. And there's a bonus: wonderful unintentional humor. The way the puppets move and talk is hilarious even if they don't say anything funny. I get a sense that the Krofft brothers knew all along what it took Mystery Science Theater 3000 10 years to teach me. It's been said that Pufnstuff was watched mostly by hippies in the 60s and 70s. After a friday night ... ... they'd get up saturday morning and watch. And what did they watch? ..., ... landscapes, bigheaded creatures talking in zany voices. I've ordered Land of the Lost DVD and can't wait to put it on my shelf. If you grew up with these then take the trip too. The World of Sid & Marty Krofft is brighter than it ever was! You'll have fun. I promise you. ... Read more

Description

This DVD contains four episodes, a new interview with star Jack Wild, and two karaoke sing-alongs.

"The Stand-In"--Witchiepoo captures Freddy, but Pufnstuf hatches a plot to rescue him. Puf's sister, Shirley, visits the island to make a movie, and Puf arranges to have the director cast the witch as a stand-in to distract her attention so Jimmy can sneak into the castle.

"The Golden Key"--Jimmy buys a map from Ludicrous Lion that shows the location of the Golden Key, which fits into the Golden Door, a secret way off Living Island. To divert Jimmy's escape, Witchiepoo captures Pufnstuf and holds him in her dungeon.

"The Birthday Party"--Witchiepoo invites herself to Jimmy's surprise birthday party and steals Freddy by rendering the partygoers helpless with laughing gas.

"The Box Kite Kaper"--Ludicrous Lion sponsors a kite-flying contest in his scheme to sell kites, giving Puf an idea. Jimmy and Freddy will attempt to fly away from Living Island in a giant box kite--until Witchiepoo gets wind of their scheme. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Take a trip to Living Island!
If you grew up in the 1970s, you watched "H.R. Pufnstuf" after school... even if you don't remember it well, you saw it at least once. "Barney" owes his existence to the first big plush dragon (or whatever type of animal he was!) on TV.

With Freddy the Flute in his shirt pocket, Jimmy (played by Jack Wild) sings and dances with his costumed friends in the fantasy world of Living Island where all animals and even inanimate objects like clocks, chairs and houses talk and interact with everyone. A definite predecessor to "Pee Wee's Playhouse!"

The DVD has an interview w/ Jack Wild as an adult and has previews of other Krofft Titles. There is also an H.R. Pufinstuf theme song sing-a-long w/ the DVD. Even the FBI warning on this DVD is entertaining!

The picture quality is excellent and the DVD is well worth the price to be transported back in time to your carefree childhood days of afterschool television and the Krofft Superstars.

This is also great viewing for kids compared to the usual garbage that is on tv for kids nowadays. Morals such as friendship, loyalty and teamwork are taught in a non-threatening fantasy environment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Krofft's Best Effort
The world of Living Island, including Witchie Poo and H. R. Pufnstuf is arguably the best effort from the Krofft team. The look and feel of the show is engaging to all ages, the voice talent is second to none, and the characters are loveable (and laughable - even the villain). I loved this show as a kid and still love it as an adult. It was great watching this DVD with my two young sons!
The transfer to DVD is great and these episodes are wonderful representations of the series. The interview with Jack Wild has good content, but not as engaging thanks to the "slide show effect" of him speaking.
This is definately a series that NEEDS to be released in total on DVD and, at the very least, the Pufnstuf movie needs to be available!

5-0 out of 5 stars A walk down memory lane!
I ordered this DVD, and literally could not wait for it to arrive! I used to watch "witchiepoo" every Saturday morning, and I could not wait to see it again for myself, and to also share it with my kids, ages 10 and 7. It met all expectations!
Alot of it I remembered, and it was fun getting reaquainted with the things I did not remember! My 10 year old likes it, but my 7 year old actully loves it! She has watched it over and over, and already knows all the songs! Which we now all sing on the way to school! Thank you for offering this classic on DVD, because every Saturday, I get to relive a little bit of my childhood, and have gotten the opportunity to "show" my girls, instead of telling them, what Mommy watched when she was little.

4-0 out of 5 stars Your friend when things get rough!
"H.R. Pufnstuf! Who's your friend when things get rough? H.R. Pufnstuf! Doesn't do a little 'cause he can't do enough!" I've been missing my friend for close to 25 years now and it's great to have him back. Oddly enough, the show is both better and worse than I remember it - but mostly better.

First of all, the opening theme is priceless! In my book, it's one of the top five Saturday Morning TV theme songs. The soulful reprise by The Boyds at show's end is also great. (Move over Aretha!)

When I was just a tyke my favorite aspect of the show was, of course, the life-sized puppets - especially H.R. himself. I still like him, but the good ol' boy accent and (*gasp*) go-go boots are just a wee disconcerting - but I'll forgive him. However, I could never stand that dumb magic flute, Freddy, and he's even more bothersome now. (And honestly, what's so magical about him!?) The side characters are mostly charming, like Cling and Clang, but also really weird, like that pink piece of candy that talks with a New York accent. And what's the deal with that glitter-encrusted Cabaret frog? What a freak.

Looking at the show today, I'd have to say what really held it together were, not so much the life-sized puppets, but the two human characters: Jimmy and Witchiepoo. I can't say enough about Jack Wild, who plays Jimmy. He radiates talent all over the place, and that Cockney accent can out-charm even the most enchanting of puppets. He's also got these crazy twist-about, stutter-step dance moves that are so cool they ought to be patented. And then there's Billie Hayes who plays Witchiepoo - she's an absolute riot! It's about as over-the-top as a performance can get, but in this venue, it's perfect and hysterical. What would the show be without Witchiepoo? Not a thing!

If you grew up watching the show, and if you can appreciate good camp, "H.R. Pufnstuf" is definitely worth watching again. Sid and Marty Krofft were working on a tight budget, and that's obvious, but they were able to pull off magic with what they had. Not only was it great television, but also the show was highly influential. Will today's children like it? I can't say, but I would assume so.

As far as the DVD itself is concerned, Rhino did an uncharacteristically poor job. The shows look and sound good, which is the main thing, but the navigation is dreadful; finding your way around is a chore. The interview with an adult Jack Wild is simply audio dubbed over a series of (creepy) photographs. (He hasn't aged well.) The sing-a-longs are a nice addition, but I would've liked to see more. The episodes are good, but randomly selected. I would be more than happy to add "H.R. Pufnstuf" to my DVD collection, but I'm going to wait for a better release, hopefully a box set with all 17 episodes. I guess I'm hooked again!

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome!
My mother was always talking about this show and one day she bought it. It's a great show the amazing thing is The Kroft Brothers only made 17 eps. ! First time I saw it I thought what the ... hey this is ok. My favorite charactor is Pufnstuf. The point it's awesome and buy it (its worth it). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Program - Add It To Your Library!
It was a rainy cold day in L.A. and I had Stevie, my 7 year old and her friend April, who is 6 over. I had too many Thanksgiving chores to play with them, so I popped in The Mother Goose Treasury, Vol. 1. To my delight, for a full hour, both kids were enraptured! On several songs; "Old King Cole", "Humpty Dumpty", "Little Miss Muffett" and "London Bridge", both kids were in fine form, just singing along with the program, having a great time.
This is a quality production that aired on The Disney Channel and uses very cool-looking puppet characters in a unique way. The kids (and I) liked the characters, the costumes and the dancing, which were all first-rate.
A GREAT Kids (probably 3-8 years) DVD, which allowed the kids to go back instantly to their favorite song over and over... until I stopped that!
Great for your own family or as an excellent low-cost gift - - I will definitely be getting Vol. 2 soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Memories
I used to own this volume and part 2 as a child and watched both of them repeatedly. I would love to own them again and relive memories from the past. This is a great thing for children of today to have. Kids growing up these days probably have no idea who Mother Goose is. What a shame! And why people are reviewing this video like it's a big screen motion picture is ridiculous. This is very old and for the kids. It's Mother Goose nursery rhymes. Geesh!

3-0 out of 5 stars Cruddy video that kids just love
This video is purely crud. The images are poor and the backgrounds are cheap stills. However, kids really love it! The songs will annoy most adults, but the video itself isn't a bad thing for the kids. Has a lot of dancing and song.
If you get this video, be sure to buy it on DVD, because I guarantee, your kids will watch it so much, your VHS tape will wear out.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Mother Goose Video Treasury on DVD! Great!
Made back in 1987 as "The Mother Goose Video Treasury", this is the endearing production made. It features Cheryl Rhoalds as a young human Mother Goose and Will Ryan as the funny, but, often wisecracking Bertram. In the town of Gooseberry Glen, Mother Goose and her friendly "watch-goose" help many of the town, including the goofy Humpty Dumpty, Who falls after Mother Goose tells him to down from the wall. She comes to his aid after his "Great Fall".

1-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately I can't give it a lower rating
The thinking behind this DVD is good. Get a central character and a sidekick to introduce favorite nursery rhymes, so that kids can enjoy a collection of classics as a part of a larger story.

That's where the good idea ends!

The casting and acting is positively attrocious. Mother Goose is too young for the role, and all the rest of characters are way too old for theirs. Multiple role playing adds to the confusion, and the cinematography is so bad, it can't be rated.

I would be ashamed of myself if I had had any part of this totally stupid production.

Tired of inane sing-along videos with cheesy music and a lack of cohesiveness? The Mother Goose Treasury, Vol. 2 features fully orchestrated songs, elaborate costuming, bright backgrounds, and even a story line! The scatterbrained Mother Goose and her young gosling Bertram are headed to town to complete some grocery shopping. Along the way they encounter a plethora of famous Mother Goose characters, including Jack (as in "Jack be nimble, Jack be quick"), Miss Muffet, Mary (and her lamb), Humpty Dumpty, and Simple Simon. Each encounter elicits a recitation of the appropriate story, either in song or verse, complete with choreography, puppetry, and onscreen subtitles. The "puppetronic" technology deserves special mention--it brings the puppetry to life and is suggestive of Jim Henson's Muppet productions. Joining the puppets is a large cast of human actors who sing, dance, and generally enthrall audiences from 3 to 8 years old. This volume offers 58 minutes of sing-along fun that kids will request repeatedly. For more Mother Goose sing-alongs, check out Mother Goose Treasury, Vol. 1. --Tami Horiuchi ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars New Zoo Review 'ed
OK, Before I review the New Zoo, I need to mention that I was a fan of H.R. Pufnstuf when I was a child, and H.R. Pufnstuf beats all when it comes to children's entertainment in my opinion. Is it silliness to me now? Sure at my age, but it's watchable enjoyable silliness. But to my nieces and nephews who I introduced to the show via tapes and TVLand, it was as entertaining for them as it was for me. (I recently bought the DVD set of Pufnstuf because those 17 episodes seemed like 117 when I was a kid as I watched each week). The big difference was I wanted to have my own talking flute and they wanted to move on and watch another movie once it was over, (Yellow Submarine was their next choice).

The New Zoo Review however, was a show which started airing when I was 8 years old and I remember Freddie Frog was my favorite character on the show, hmmmmm... maybe because I liked a certain talking flute named, Freddie?.

This series is good for kids as it entertains and teaches. It doesn't teach math or language, it teaches values like cooperation and tolerance and kindness. Those are the type of tools needed for true success as a human being.

The biggest complaint I would have about the show was its production value. It seemed as though it was performed on a set. I know it was, but as a kid it seemed like it was being performed instead of how Pufnstuf somehow seemed to bring me to another land and the characters made me feel as though they believed they were alive, whereas the New Zoo Review sometimes made me feel like I was watching a play with characters in costumes. After a couple of episodes that complaint faded away and I just enjoyed what the show was about as I am sure your child will as well.

The series was good and the characters were fun. I am sure if your child loves Barney, the Teletubbies or Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, they will fully enjoy the New Zoo Review. And you can't beat the 10 bucks per disc price! Buy one and see for yourself. "They'll have fun learning what they don't know!" - quote from the opening song of New Zoo Review. (OK, so I remember everything including the theme song to Ultraman!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Childhood
I watched the New Zoo Revue when it was in syndication and loved it as a child. Thinking of it takes me back to childhood, when a kid could be a kid. These days some of these television shows for children are find to find; if you only have cable! I didn't have cable and children's shows were always in an abundant supply. The previous reviewer doesn't know what he is reviewing. It's not sissy stuff. It is entertainment for the kid and the kid in the adult.

1-0 out of 5 stars Aw HELL No! The Barney of the Seventies!
When you watch a show you haven't seen since childhood, one of four things happens-

1. It's even better than you remember since you're older and "get" more of the material (.i.e., Bullwinke and Rocky).

2. You loved it then and you love it now (Fat Albert pre-Brown Hornet, Schoolhouse Rock, almost anything by Hanna-Barbera except "Yogi's Gang").

3. Age makes you realize that it wasn't all that great (Gumby, Lancelot Link, etc.)

4. You thought it was junk then and still think it's junk (Funky Phantom, Pufnstuf, and THIS!)

In 1973 (then aged 9), I thought this was a bunch of sissy stuff with silly animals in outrageously ugly costumes singing dumb songs in corny episodes about friendship, sharing, etc. All of this is still true! I borrowed this recently on a lark and my opinion hadn't changed. What's worse, even my four year old neice thought this was "baby stuff."

This is only for kids who could actually tolerate the corn and mush of Barney or overly nostaligic adults who REALLY need to grow up! ... Read more
