4-0 out of 5 stars Reddy, Rooney and a dragon named Elliott
The seventies were rough on the family entertainment market. Disney, once untouchable in this respect, found itself in a bit of a quandry, the likes of which the theatrical release of "Pete's Dragon" didn't help. Most critics found it hammy and, with the exception of Elliott, the dragon, discarded the movie as just a trite piece of fluff. Well, it was and it is - but why does anything so light-hearted, gay and original have to be anything but? In the intervening decades "Pete's Dragon has gone on to become a much loved Disney classic and for good reasons. Helen Reddy, Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons and Jim Dale are inspired casting choices, giving a depth to their characters that greatly enhances the film. True, the film's score doesn't match the staying power of Mary Poppins but 'Candle on the Water' is a great romantic ballad, 'Brazzle Dazzle Day' is a fun-loving feel good song and 'Passamaquadi' is ultra camp played in the best sense. Not much to complain about with Disney's transfer of the film. It's anamorphic, near pristine and remixed to 5.1 stereo. One note - 'Candle On The Water', for some inexplicable reason, may suddenly freeze frame in the middle of the song on some players the first run through. If you are worried about this, play the song first to see if it does this and if so, simply still frame advance to the next track, then go back and replay the song. This solves the problem for all subsequent times you choose to play the song. As I say, I'm at a loss to explain why this problem sometimes occurs. Over all, this is a wonder film experience no matter your age. One only regrets that there is no making-of documentary included.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pure Disney Musical Magic
There's something about live-action, animation Disney films that just seem to fascinate me. For one, Disney can go beyond two hours of a movie, and still keep it G-rated. Now that's pretty impressive to me. Most companies would probably have rated it PG, but not Disney. They try and it keep for the whole auidience. Which is what everyone needs to see in a film. And the special effects isn't bad either.

This film also includes the legendary Mickey Rooney. The story of Pete's Drangon is pretty simple. Pete is a young orphan, who is running away from his abopted parents, and end up in Maine, a fishing town with his best friend, Elliott. Sometimes you can see him, and other times, you can't. A kind lighthouse keeper, Nora played by (Helen Rebby), and her father (Mickey Rooney), Elliott's pranks gets them into a whole lot of trouble.

The music in this film is Ocar-nominated beautiful. Like "The Happist Home in These Hills," "It's Not Easy," "Candle on the Water," & "Brazzle Dazzle Day." A simply marvoulous soundtrack for the whole family.

Now you must know, that Pete's Dragon was made in the late 70s, which was long before computer technology was invented. You know, like CGI grahpics and so forth. Which is another thing that impressive me, how Disney can create these images and actually make them work. Pete's Dragon is a wonderful story, that will be treasured for the next generation to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good movie for a Disney musical
I remember this movie from my childhood, so I bought it for my toddler. He loves it. My son points at the DVD case and grunts. He watches it everyday (for 2 weeks now). It must be the music and singing because the storyline is lackluster. Everytime he sees the dragon or hears a song he starts chattering away with his gibberish pre-talk. My preferred character is Doc Terminus - the con man / man of science. I give it 4 stars because I have watched it so many times the melodies are stuck in my head. I hope he gets a new "favorite" movie soon :)

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Disney's Best Live Action Films!
This is one of those films that you never forget. I saw this movie when i was little and I am still a fan of it. Pete's Dragon is one of the first Disney films to use live action and animation together in a film. The story follows a boy who is on the run from his terrible adoptive family the Gogans (Shelley Winters, Rob Conaway)and his friend Elliot the dragon (voiced by Charlie Callas) who is sometimes invisible. Together, they are the best of friends until they come upon a quaint fishing town where they soon start to get into mischief.
Eventually Pete is taken in by Nora(Helen Reddy) a lighthouse keeper and her father(Mickey Rooney) where he soon becomes part of the family. But soon, the Gogans discover where he is living and are determined to get him back. There are many delightful performances in this film including Jim Dale who plays the terrible Dr. Terminus and his obnoxious side-kick Hoagie(played by red Buttons). The funny thing about this movie is that Mickey Rooney and Red Buttons are drunk through most of it. Lastly, I recommend this movie because of the music. This film has some of the best Disney songs. Most notably Helen Reddy's "Candle on the Water" and "There's Room For Everyone". Along with the singing and dancing, this is one great Disney film and it is not to be missed. If you've seen it, watch it again and if you haven't ,DO!

4-0 out of 5 stars Woo-hoo! My kid likes it as much as I did!
Yes, the animation is dated. Yes, the plot is kind of corny BUT my daughter is just as enchanted as I was (and still am). You can't miss with this one! Pete's Dragon shows you what it means to be a kid with an unbelievable (only to the grown-ups) best friend who helps you out when you think that there's no one else left to care. The songs are still catchy and the baddies are still scary. The DVD is sooooo much better than VHS; and unlike my VHS copy there is no fear of it wearing out from over-playing. ... Read more

Description

The Hudson Brothers and a variety of familiar faces star in this hilarious murder mystery spoof. In the tradition of "Scary Movie," "Hysterical" parodies horror films such as "Dracula," "The Amityville Horror" and "The Exorcist," as well as classics like "Jaws" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark." In the spirit of "Airplane!," this fast-moving laugh fest also boasts plenty of physical comedy, farce, satire, Marx Brothers style-wordplay and outrageous musical numbers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What is it about this movie??
This is beyond a doubt one of the most addictive movies of all time!!Like most of the reviews I've read, I too watched this movie as a kid. I remember our copy being recorded off of HBO and we wore it out. I rent this movie, from the one BLOCKBUSTER in town that carries it, at least once a year. It amazes me when I ask people about this movie and they have never seen it. To this day my family still quotes this movie. "he wants to know where the old light house is!" I think it's "hysterical" to look back at the things in the movie I laughed at as a child. I don't even know why it was funny to me then because alot of the humor is based more towards adults. I laugh at my own naivite, but it's good to know that you can watch it in front of the kids without much worrying. When you watch this movie for the first time watch it begining to end. You will be amazed at the non-stop humor pouring from every second of it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it! Love it! Love it!
OH MY GOD! I have been trying to find this movie for YEARS! My husband cannot believe that I'm fanatical for this movie. Tried to explain it, but if they haven't seen it, they won't realize the value of this movie. My brother and I used to watch this all the time and we would laugh hysterically! Loved the Hudson Brothers' Show, so this movie was just the perfect venue for them.

IF you want a great parody movie that just sticks in your mind FOREVER (All work and no play makes Caper a friendly ghost- and it's been at least 15 years since I've seen it), then this is the movie for you. A cult classic!

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT "SO BAD IT'S GOOD." JUST BAD.
I don't understand the other reviews. This movie is not funny. The acting is atrocious and the story cliched. The quality of this Image DVD is also bad. The colors are dull and the sound is so soft I had to max out my volume.

I couldn't watch this. It's not even suitable for family viewing. There are some very crude(not funny or creative) moments. The only explanation for the good reviews is if the Hudson brothers are reviewing incognito.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Difference Does It Make?
Oh Man! I've been waiting for so long for this movie to show up on DVD. I'm a self-professed lover of "stupid movies"- and this one has to top the list. It is over-the-edge bizarre and totally silly, but you just can't help but laugh. I would think this movie scores high among the 12-15 age range scoping out all of the dirty subtext. And,this movie captures such an excellent atmosphere- I think it's visually perfect - including the sets (lighthouse on a cliff- creepy small town) - and the makeup for the "what difference" zombies. Top notch-

1-0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor
While the movie it self is a classic the DVD leaves much to be desired. I was disapointed to find that the DVD was in full screen as opposed to the wide screen I prefer. It also received no treatment whatsoever on the transfer. The titles are shakey as well as the picture. If i had to guess they transfered right from a video tape found at a local video store. If i had it to over again I would have stuck to my copy on VHS and spent my money on something else. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars These Women Are Out Of This World!
Three Venusians, played by J.J. North (Attack Of The 60 Foot Centerfold), Theresa Lynn (Private Parts), and Leslie Glass (Strip Search), come to our planet in search of Earth men. Their mission is to stimulate men and, at the height of arousal, put a device on their head which drains the men of all their bodily fluids. The resulting liquid is used on their planet as a narcotic. The most enjoyable scenes in this movie are when these three gorgeous gals, always dressed to kill and usually going topless, whip the men into a sexual frenzy. The saddest scene is seeing Charlie Callas playing the bartender. His schtick is almost as old as he looks, and he looks REALLY old. Leon Head plays Detective Oakenshield as an English version of Inspector Clouseau. Uncoordinated and unorthodox, he stumbles upon the solution to the murders. Unfortunately for him, his new girlfriend, played by Michelle Bauer (Bikini Drive-In), also turns out to be a Venusian. Fortunately for him, his partner on the police force is really an intergalactic bounty hunter. I have to deduct one star from this movie because of its abrupt ending. The closing credits end with the tease, watch for "Vampire Vixens II: Oakenshield On Venus." Sadly, this sequel has yet to materialize.

1-0 out of 5 stars Vampire Vixens from Venus
VAMPIRE VIXENS FROM VENUS is an absolutly reprehensible movie. It has no redeeming qualities what-so-ever. From the (unbelievably) lame jokes, to the endless, pointless nudity, Vampire Vixens From Venus is absolutly terrible. There's not much else to say! It's just plain awful!

1-0 out of 5 stars I See The Vixens, Where Are The Vampires?
I picked up this movie from Amazon a while ago. I was in the mood to see what b movie actress Michelle Bauer had been up to. Unfortunately I picked this thing up.

The basic story goes...there are these aliens that have come to earth to harvest a drug that is illegal in space as well. Human males produce this stuff at the height of extacsy, at which time the aliens (beautifully portrayed by three vixens one being JJ North) suck this stuff out of the men leaving them like raisins.

Some funny moments in this movie but the detective's slapstick and stupid humour really made this movie stink. Michelle Bauer isn't the star I thought she was in this movie, but she does have an okay role as well.

This is a campy teen T & A movie with a very annoying detective in it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Brooks, Chaplin, Keaton????
Mel Brooks' homage to silent movies isn't nearly as funny or clever as the movies it aims at. I'm a long time Brooks admirer. He's the reason I wanted to become a filmmaker. But,"Silent Movie" is one of the few movies I stay away from. I'll give the movie some credit. It does have a great cast cast; Marty Feldman (Marty Eggs), Dom DeLuise (Dom Bell), Bernadette Peters (Vilma Kaplan), Sid Caesar (Studio Chief), Harold Gould (Engulf) Ron Carey (Devour) and cameos by Burt Reynolds, Paul Newman, Anne Bancroft (It's no suprise to find her in this movie, since she is after all Brooks' wife.) James Caan, Liza Minnelli, and Marcel Marceau (His one scene is an absolute highlight!). If the cast wasn't enough, as with any Brooks movie there is going to be laughs, how many depends on the movie. And this one offers a few. The scenes that really make me dislike this film are the scenes with Brooks, Feldman, and Deluise driving around in their car. It's these scenes that I feel slow the movie up. Whenever the movie starts to carry some energy, we see them in the car in the very next scene! For those who don't know, this movie is about a once great director (Brooks) who was ruined due to drinking. After some time away from movies he tries to make a comeback. His grand idea is to make a...you guessed it...a silent movie. After Sid Caesar warns him that slapstick is dead, and as soon as he's done saying that, he falls out of his chair and flies across the room, proving to us, that yes, slapstick is dead! Caesar won't hear of making a silent movie, even though his studio needs all the help in can get before a conglomerate "Engulf & Devour" (who's tagline is "our hands are in everything") buys the studio. After Brooks suggest what if he gets big stars to act in the film, the studio chief soon realizes that with big stars, the film could make big money, and so he agrees to let Brooks make his film. This all sound like it could be a good funny movie, don't you think? But, it's because of those Brooks, Feldman, and DeLuise "car scenes" I'm unable to suggest anyone renting or buying this. If you insist on buying it, my favorite moments are Brooks and Bancroft's scene together, the hospital scene with Caesar (That one scene offers the biggest laugh in my opinion)and the first time the executives at "Engulf & Devour" first see a picture of Peters, ONLY Brooks would of thought of what you see in that scene. A hell of a lot better then most comedies being made today, but that's not saying much when films by Adam Sandler are being released. I don't know about you, but if I have to pick between Mel Brooks and Adam Sandler, get "Blazing Saddles" in the vcr ready to go lol. ** 1\2 out of *****

4-0 out of 5 stars "You bad boy"
It's not as cohesive or funny as YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN or THE PRODUCERS, but SILENT MOVIE has plenty to offer. A wild romp that parodies the film business and the all but lost art of creating silent films, SILENT MOVIE stars Mel Brooks, Marty Feldman, and Dom Deluise as a trio of film makers who vow to save their studio by making a new silent film with major stars. Many conventions of silent films are spoofed, such as how the right title card can alter the meaning of a scene (the title of this review is from one such card). Several stars (such as Burt Reynolds and Paul Newman) seem to enjoy parodying themselves, and Anne Bancroft's tango with our heroes is a standout. Harold Gould is the epitome of blackhearted villany and Sid Ceaser contributes some of his trademark pantomime as the neurotic studio chief. Best of all is Marty Feldman; with his wirey body, elastic face, and, of course, those eyes, Feldman looks as if he stepped out of 1920's of Mack Sennett into the 1970's of Mel Brooks. He steals many a scene (subtly or otherwise) in SILENT MOVIE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't see the time for this being released on DVD
This is a classic Mel Brooks movie. Mel is genial, a very talented producer and an extraordinary actor, he and his pals
Dom DeLuis and Marty Freeman (that's how he is called I think)
make a riot and performed a lot of scenes where I literally fell
of my bed laughing. Can not understand why is not on DVD. I have
a collection on DVD of classic and this is on my whising list
(along with High Anxiety, another Brooks classic, and Foul Play).
Really enjoyed how they persuade Burt Reynolds, Paul Newman
and even Marcel Marceau to be a part of a movie project Mel Fun
had. Another highlight of this movie is Sid Caesar performance.
Excellent. Let's see if the wait is not that long.

4-0 out of 5 stars MEL USE YOUR INFLUENCE AND PUT THIS ON DVD
I love this movie. Its silent of voice but not of music. John Morris' score is wonderfully crafted. Its funny because Mel Brooks is a GODDAMN COMEDIC GENIUS. And its a movie because it deserved to be in the the theater.NOW FOR MY GRIPE. WHYYYY OH WHYYYY ISN'T THIS MOVIE ON DVD.If the saner heads of who ever it is that decides what goes to DVD puts this one out I hope it's in TRUE WIDESCREEN like BLAZING SADDLES and HISTORY OF THE WORLD I'm also waiting for HIGH ANXIETY,ROBIN HOOD M.I.T. and DRACULA DEAD AND LOVING IT.AND MAYBE JUST MAYBE THEY'LL REISSUE YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN AND SPACEBALLS in TRUE WIDESCREEN I dont have an alleged 16x9 widescreen tv. Squashed screen is the more approapiate term.Sooo.. TO ALL DVD MAKERS STOP MAKING YOUR DVDS TO ACCOMODATE THIS FALSE FORMAT. maybe I wasn't helpful with the movie review but I know my other info was crucially helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Underappreciated Gem Really Should Be on DVD!
Silent Movie is my favorite Mel Brooks movie and I think it is very underrated. I see that some reviewers didn't enjoy the silly humor in this movie but I love it and the jokes and gags never fail to cheer me up when I'm not feeling good but of course it's a wonderful movie to watch anytime! It is both a spoof of and a homage to silent movies and stars Mel Brooks, Marty Feldman and Dom Deluise as well as a lot of cameo apperences from some well known actors and entertainers and I really want to see Silent movie transferred to DVD as my video is wearing out. A widescreen editon DVD would be very nice! ... Read more
