5-0 out of 5 stars I can watch it over and over again
This is one of my favorite movies. I have watched it infinite times. This movie is funny and entertaining. I never get bored watching it. It's a story of a gym teacher who gets to teach summer school, and in order to get a tenure for next year he has to make the students pass their english tests, but they are students lacking motivation and skills. On the way to the test the story has a lot of sub plots, and very funny and memorable moments, with great characters like Chainsaw and Dave who love horror movies, Denise a dislexic girl, Larry an underage stripper, Pam (Courtney Thorne Smith) a surfer, and of course Freddy Shoop (Mark Harmon) and Robin Bishop (Kirsty Alley).

4-0 out of 5 stars Harmless Fun
1987's Summer School is an underrated comedy from the 80's. The plot revolves around reluctant summer school teacher, Freddy Shoop (Mark Harmon), who is forced into the job after the original teacher hits the lottery. Shoop is a gym teacher and he must deal with a classroom full of typical high school misfits. Throughout the summer, Shoop's unconventional teaching methods get him trouble with the school's vice principal, but wins over the kids. The film is carried by the immensely likable cast. Mr. Harmon reactions to the student's quirks and miscues are perfectly timed and the students provide genuine laughs. Dean Cameron & Gary Riley are hilarious as shock meisters Chainsaw and Dave, Richard Steven Horowitz plays the perfect geek as Alan Eakain and a young Courtney Thorne-Smith is alluring as Pam House who develops a big time thing for Shoop. Kirstie Alley shows up as a love interest for Shoop. Summer School is a great, lightweight movie that is small on plot, but big on laughs and fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Single Funniest Movie Ever
'Summer School' is truly the funniest movie in the history of film. You've gotta get past the 1987 styles and fashion, but once u do that...this movie is the great. Dave, Chainsaw, the pregnant surfer...ahh, you gotta see it to know what I mean. A cinematic classic. Its about time it came out on DVD. Go buy it now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't wet your pants.....watch this...!
Brilliant and sooooooo underrated. I'm a huge fan, and I'm so glad it's finally on DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!!!
Fun 80's movie. Good acting. Good directing. Favorite line from the movie: When the high school gym teacher (Mark Harmon) is told he has to teach summer school he says, "...but I'm not a real teacher!" The principal replies, "That's okay, they're not real students." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheesy But Fun
This is a good movie if you are looking to relax, have a few laughs, and not use your brain. There are some "cringe" moments which some consider funny that I did not like which kept me from rating this higher (and almost caused it to drop a notch). But moments like "doing the nasty" and the thing Keith David's character does to some cops is seriously wrong and funny. I enjoyed watching Emilor and Charlie work together. I'm glad Amazon.com has put this back out for sale!

5-0 out of 5 stars men at awesome work
this move was the most funny movie and yet it was heartwarming in a way

4-0 out of 5 stars Alot of laughs
This is a pretty funny story and has some great actors in it. Although it could be considered a little on the odd side it definitely will get you laughing. There's always something going wrong and the comedy never stops!

5-0 out of 5 stars a comedy classic
I've been waiting for this to be released on DVD. The movie is a hoot!!! Especially love the "Louis" character. "I hate cops- I hate rent-a cops too". "Now if Mr.Sneaky-man would come up here and stand next to Mr.Bone-head". I just received my copy the other day, and was wondering if anyone else has this problem.......there is no chapter index sheet in the box. Just the DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Off-beat, funny, and poignant
Unlike the standard Hollywood romance, this movie gives us a realistic view of people. The characters are quirky, neurotic, confused, and not really very glamorous. They are also very likeable, as we can sympathize and identify with the dilemmas they create for themselves. Even as the movie pokes fun at them for their foibles, there is also a tenderness for them and the self-imposed suffering they must endure.

The plot revolves around a friendship between 2 men and a woman. When one of the men (Eric Stoltz) marries the woman (Meg Tilly), the angst and complications begin. Although the course of the story seems foreseeable (not a lot of surprises), the film escapes being predictable by having believable characters that are like people many of us know or could know from our own lives.

In addition, the structure is unusual....the different sections of this film were written by different writers, yet all parts do seem integrated with the whole. Add to this the fact that the scenes are seemingly artlessly put together, so that often there is almost a documentary effect....what you end up with is an experiment in film making that doesn't require you to have a film degree to appreciate.

3-0 out of 5 stars SWORD FIGHT !!!
O.K., maybe I was a little hard on this film originally. I recently purchased an import copy of it on DVD and watched it again. I think in all fairness, I'd bump it up a star to 3. Now, about watching it on DVD, I can now go right to Tarantino giving his Top Gun monologue. As I've said before, it's way better then his Madonna speech. Be sure to catch this movie and give it chance when it comes out domestically on DVD (or better yet, now on VHS at this nice price). Sword fight !!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated But Hasn't Lost Its Touch
This is no reflection on the quality of the film, but Sleep With Me loses its edge after ten years. It's full of witty, 90's style banter. This was a great film when romantic comedies were in. The actors were hilarious and I enjoyed Craig Sheffer for the first time ever. I don't watch a lot of his films but this one is entertaining. I saw it in 1994 and was hooked on it then. Since then my tastes have changed and I've gotten attached to other films. This is the perfect date movie providing a realistic, comedic look at the differences between women and men and the problems that can surface within a circle of friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars poker lovers moovie
This is one of my favorite movie. The interaction between the characters in conflict situations is so real. I love the scene in the living room were Stoltz and Tilley start getting into it. Its one of those scenes with dialogue flowing amongst a whole group of characters. The Umbrella scene seamlessly transitions from the realism of this movie into poetic romance that is absolute movie magic, with Tilley just lighting up the screen. Far all the discussion about the sword fight scene, at the end of the day, the funniest part of this movie is the poker scenes with Parker and the actress from Chasing Amy.

I haven't seen the DVD yet. Does it have any special features ?

4-0 out of 5 stars Moments of genius
This is a good movie, but the final 15 minutes are almost pure genius. the story comes to an emotional head, with some great dialogue, and superb acting, but Tarantino nearly steals the show with his cameo. Ever wondered why Top Gun is the greatest script in the history of Hollywood? If so watch this film! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What's up homebrew? ------ "..Everybody Felix!..."
What's up homebrew?
Hilarious dialogue! "..Everybody Felix!..."
It's a movie of conversations and very little action.. It's hilarious. I can't describe it.. Everyone is just so goofy! It's subtle....FELIX steals the show...And as a fan of Galaxie 500 and Luna, It is cool to see Dean Wareham in a movie and doing the music for it.. He does a cool version of "Frankie And Johnny". It's a real low-budget film shot in just 6 days! I don't know about the DVD, I only have the VHS version but it's a good movie for the people with a weird sense of humor! "How did my birthday boy spend his birthday?".... "NOTHING." this is for the people who like irreverent comedies. Support indie films. It's goofy, it's New York, it's indie, it's Rae Dawn Chong, Ally Sheedy, Justine Batemen and more! Same apartment...3 parties.. a birthday party, a halloween party and a New Year's party. "Everybody Felix! It's Felix's birthday! Everybody Felix! He's old in the best way!"

3-0 out of 5 stars Bizarre, but quite funny
I'm a big NB fan. THis movie, with it's awful edits, still manages to be entertaining. It isn't nearly as good as his other two films, but still kept me glued to the TV for 75 minutes. The guest shots are fantastic, particularly the Ally Sheedy ones. Christopher Eigeman, my favorite actor, deserved a better part, but Carlos Jacott is terrific. Baumbach himself gives an enjoyable performance. THe movie is all about dialogue and much of it is inspired. If you are new to Noah Baumbach's work, go get Kicking and Screamin and then Mr. Jealousy. This film is really best for fans, and curious viewers. I'm awaiting Noah's next film with great hopes.

2-0 out of 5 stars subpar versus Kicking & Screaming and Mr. Jealousy
Perhaps predictably, this movie suffers from not having the same kind of time and money invested in its production compared to Kicking & Screaming and Mr. Jealousy. Those two films had a uniquely beautiful combination of literate dialogue and humorous ensemble interaction. While Highball had many of the same actors from the first two movies, the overall dialogue and themes were totally different. The first two movies had irreverence mixed with the sympathy of nostalgia and the difficult emotional transition to adulthood. Highball had no direction at all.

While I no longer remember all the details of Highball, I felt that the characters were poorly defined and the plot less meaningful than Mr. Jealousy and Kicking & Screaming. The movie seemed incomplete and hastily put together.

If you like literate, witty ensemble comedies, you should definitely see Kicking and Screaming, then Mr. Jealousy, then the Whit Stillman trilogy (which also features Chris Eigeman): Metropolitan, Barcelona, and The Last Days of Disco. All 5 of those being among my favorites.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quirky, crazy comedy
Interesting comedy told through the course of three parties in one apartment: a birthday party, a Halloween party, and a New Year's Eve party. Basically centered around the couple who's apartment it is who first are together (birthday), break-up (Halloween), and then are married (New Year's) and all their weird and strange friends they join together for each occasion. For anyone who can remember times like these or are going through times like these, there are plenty of moments to laugh at. Like the boring awkward birthday party magician?! Or the hideously costumed drunk hostess at Halloween?! Or a friend coming out on New Years Eve?! It's all there.....strangely and sadly so. You will recognize so man actors in this I don't know how the director got them all for this nothing of a movie but he did, from Stolz to Sheedy to Bogdanovich and more. You'll have fun guessing who's who, but there's plenty of who's not in the film too. Quirky, strange, but enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most clever scripts written!
It came upon accident i even saw this ridiculously funny movie. The editing sucks, the plot goes absolutely nowhere, but the undertones of great humor fullfill this movie even through the closing credits. If one is looking for a movie with flat out jokes please don't waste your time. To those with a sense of humor, on the other hand, this is one of my all time favorite movies. 5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes cheesy is GOOD!
I liked this film! Honest! It was great fun, and quite exciting too. Okay, so I liked most of the actors, such as Wil Wheaton as Rodney and Terry Farrell as the scientist Allison

It reminded me greatly of the film The Core in various parts, in fact I think that The Core took a great deal from this low budget sci-fi than people are willing to admit.

The plot is quite simple, it's a save the from destruction movie, with your obligatory bad guy who finds his conscience at the last minute and saves the others by sacrificing his own life, the gruesome death of a likeable crew member (Rodney) and the exciting ride in the bowels of the earth by the survivors trying to make it to the surface in one piece!

Of course there are other baddies in that the Deep Core Machine they are using has been built and funded by the Chinese who want to use it as weapon at some point and the sleazy American bad Daryl guy played with gusto by the dead pan actor James Russo gets his just deserts at the end.

It is nothing spectacular but it is good fun to watch! The special effects aren't all that brilliant though they do have their moments, the finding of a huge diamond cavern is one of them, the lasers on the Deep Core machine another, and I thought the lava flow was pretty good too!

All in all this is quality cheese, and I really enjoyed it and I'm not ashamed to admit to it online!

2-0 out of 5 stars Cheesy, But Worth Watching
Deep Core is one of those Sci-Fi movies that you almost wish they didn't make. The premise is good, about half of the actors are good, there are even some interesting scenes of the ship that aren't half-bad. That's about all that can be said for the movie.

Deep Core is based on the same basic premise as 2003's The Core - Man has screwed up the earth and has to tunnel down into the earth to fix it. The Core is clearly the better of the two movies. Deep Core, on the other hand, has all of the same elements: a ship (The Core's is a lot better looking), a crew, a few nuclear warheads, a person that gets killed by lava, and a person that sacrifices themselves for the rest of the group. Once you get passed those basic similarities, Deep Core is but a pour precursor to the later film. It has three good actors: Wil Wheaton, Terry Farrell and Bruce McGill; the rest are generally overly dramatic.

There are a few special effects that don't look all that bad (such as the cutting scenes). All of the earth-quake-type scenes look rather fake and the ship looks poorly suited to the type of work that it was designed for. Overall, its not a bad film, but if you have a choice watch The Core, not Deep Core.

5-0 out of 5 stars How can you NOT love this movie???
This is the ultimate sci-fi geek movie... we have Ms. Terry Farrell of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Jadzia Dax) and the infamous Wil Wheaton of Star Trek: Next Generation (Wesley Crusher) and current Internet fame. I can't honestly believe the trekkies can stay away. This one scores WAY higher for me than Free Enterprise.

It was recommended by Wil on his site (see url below) yesterday so we hopped down to the video store and rented it. It's cheesy and fun and a great movie.

Nice death scene, Wil....

3-0 out of 5 stars Awesome - if you're a B movie scifi or Terry Farrell fan
Anything with Terry Farrell in it rates Five stars in my book, she is one of the,(if not thee), most beautifull and sexy women alive, not to mention a very intelligent, talented actress, I wish she had the confidence (she has the talent) to do more quality movies. (she'd be awesome in a romantic comedy) What can I say I'm a fan. But to be honest this is a Sci-fi B-movie action adventure, Probably low budget, but the special effect are good. I gave it 3 Stars for having Terry in it, her acting is very good (considering the script). If it had a bigger budget, a better plot and script it would earn the 3 stars or more. But still it is a fun movie to watch and I enjoyed it. But you have to be a B-movie, SCI-FI fan to really enjoy it. (or a Terry fan) I'm both. The cast is good and the acting, I think they had a lot of fun making it, and some of you will watching it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Meanwhile, back in the 60s.
This is just like an updated B movie from the sixties and I enjoyed it. It's real comic book stuff. The effects are not bad, the pace hardly flags and the cast seem to be enjoying themselves so it's easy viewing. I enjoyed this more than big budget films such as Evolution or Jurassic Park 3. But I think the absence of big names will put people off, not that it matters because the cast here do a fine job. And if big names don't matter to you then you could do a lot worse than watch this. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars New Twist on the Last Big Score
Evan (played by Christopher Amitrano) is a Manhattan drug dealer, haunted by a girl from his past and stressed by the weight of his lifestyle. His partner Jake (played by KC Armstrong) offers him the chance of a lifetime: the chance to sell 5000 "hits" of the mysterious drug known as "Grace." Evan then solicits the spaced-out, retired burnout Rich Karma (played by Dean Cameron) to sample the drug. The results launch all of the characters on a dangerous, suspenseful final sale. "Grace and the Storm" is surprisingly quiet and subtle for a story about the criminal underworld, but Christopher Amitrano's acting sucks you into the lead character's personal stuggles. By the final scenes, you truly sympathize with him as an anti-hero, and want nothing more than to see him somehow complete his deal. ... Read more
