4-0 out of 5 stars Cryer's 1st picture and one of his best performances!
He is EVERY bit as good as one could expect someone that age to be in this endearing romantic comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grounded Till I'm 40...
What Jon Cryer had over Matthew Broderick, was his ability to play "Simple Geekieness", in an endearingly awkward sort of way, and in this movie, he's at his most poignant, playing a photography geek, who falls hard, for a women whom he's accidentally photographed, on one of his early morning photography jaunts.

Up to this point, his world had pretty much revolved around his camera, and a dream of using it, to get the money needed to go to photography school in a different city, so he could escape his hum-drum existence and crappy home life, were his mother's new boyfriend is trying to be his "Best Friend", and in peal advice that he doesn't want to hear (as sound and poniant as it may be).

But, enter Demi Moore, a down on her luck rock singer, playing at a dive bar, with big dreams of the big times, hampered by disserting band members, a sleazy bar owner, and very little luck.

And suddenly, Jon Cryer's world changes, as his infatuation grows for Demi, and he becomes obsessed with seeing her dream full filled (whether she wants to let him help her or not). We see his little world, where everything is seen from a distance, through his cameras lens, opens up, and through his struggles to help Demi, we watch him matures from a geeky kid, to a young man

This film has a lot going for it, in comedy of situation, depth of character, and charmingly gratifying story, that makes this a "Must See" film, for 80's nostalgia fans, and any fan of a great comedy with heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars OH MY GOD!!! THIS MOVIE IS AWSOME!!!
This is a great movie about a kid who spends his life savings and throws away his dream of photography only to help a lovely lady get her dream of becoming a famous singer. You have to watch this movie! It never gets boring and the story is great. And the only thing that makes it alot better is that its got Demi Moore and she looks mad HOT in this movie!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars EG Daily's ten minuets on screen save the day
Jon Cryer is little too hormonal, Demi Moore is a little too "husky" but E.G Daily in the small role of Cryer's older brothers' girlfriend rocks. If is wasn't for her talking him into going to a bar he would never have met Laura (Moore) and had his virginity taken and his heart stomped on (all the while taking great candid's of a pre-boob job Moore).

4-0 out of 5 stars FUNNY! FUNNY! FUNNY!
If you liked JON CRYER in "PRETTY IN PINK", you'll find him especially charming in this cute flick! As a matter of fact, I found all the characters uniquely charming and clever...DEMI and JON work great together as 'ageless' companions. ... Read more

Hayao Miyazaki directed and/or wrote the first episodes of Meitantei Holmes ("Famous Detective Holmes," 1981), featuring a canine cast. These adventures were made three years later, as part of a Japanese-Italian coproduction, with different artists: all that survives of Miyazaki's work are the designs of the main characters. Instead of mysteries, the stories play as slapstick adventures, with Holmes outwitting Professor Moriarty to recover the treasures of a rich industrialist or protect a stubborn banker. In episode 14, Holmes foils Moriarty's attempt to steal some diamond-studded carved coral lobsters from a private aquarium--which suggests just how silly the story lines are. Moriarty's perpetually starving assistants Todd and Smiley and Inspector LeStrade and his Keystone Bobbies provide most of the comedy in what became an innocuous but undistinguished series for small children. Suggested 7 & Up: Minor cartoon violence, tobacco use. --Charles Solomon ... Read more

Story Theatre consists of five fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm, each told with a lean, stripped-down production style with no sets orfabulous costumes; all the trappings are created by the actors with theirbodies and voices. The stories range from well-known favorites like "TheBremen Town Musicians" and "The Golden Goose" to more obscure butexcellent tales like "The Blue Light," in which a soldier cast aside byhis king gets his revenge with a little magic help. The no-frillsstorytelling creates some evocative effects; kids raised oncomputer-generated images could probably use the imaginative exercisethese productions provide. In addition, Story Theatreincludes intriguing discussions with the actors about the process ofcreating the pieces and the business of theater at large. --BretFetzer ... Read more

Hayao Miyazaki directed the first six episodes of Meitantei Holmes (literally "Famous Detective Holmes," 1981) and wrote the scripts for some of them. Copyright disputes held up the Japanese-Italian coproduction until 1984, when it was continued with different artists. The rumpled designs for the canine versions of Holmes and Dr. Watson bear Miyazaki's distinctive stamp, as does the look of many of the vehicles, including Holmes's steam-powered automobile and blimp, the various biplanes, and an outsized gunship from the British Navy. Holmes repeatedly outwits the vulpine Moriarty, despite the bumbling interference of Inspector LeStrade, but the later stories grow increasingly silly. In "The White Cliffs of Dover," it's Mrs. Hudson who stops Moriarty's plot to sabotage the first London-Paris airmail service. The English dub is dismayingly flat, and the subtitled Japanese version makes more entertaining viewing. Suggested for ages 7 and up: Minor cartoon violence, tobacco use. --Charles Solomon ... Although Hayao Miyazaki directed and/or wrote the first episodes of Meitantei Holmes ("Famous Detective Holmes"), these adventures were made years later, as part of a Japanese-Italian coproduction that had a different crew. Holmes's steam-powered automobile and the primitive airplanes in the early episodes bear Miyazaki's stamp, but when the later artists tried to follow his lead, they got carried away with silly gadgets. Professor Moriarty flies a pteranodon-shaped airplane in episodes 15 and 18; he builds an elaborate underwater railway and a monster submarine in 17. Even the clever story in 16, in which Holmes uses optics to reveal the secret writing within a crystal sword case, is marred by the intrusion of a cartoony burrowing machine. The terminally inept Inspector LeStrade and Moriarty's put-upon assistants provide slapstick humor that may appeal to smaller children. 4-0 out of 5 stars Scooby and Shaggy take a break.
I saw this like a hundred times when I was a kid and I did not think I would laugh at it as much as I did then. Especially considering this is old school Scooby animation and not the sleeker, brighter animation of recent years. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. It's even better than Scooby's most recent adventure (The Monster of Mexico).

There is no Mystery Inc or Mystery Machine in this movie. It's just Shaggy (wearing a red shirt instead of a green one) and Scooby (and unfortunately, Scrappy, tho he doesn't feature prominently) and Shag's girlfriend Googy. Shaggy lives in an alarmingly large, mansion-esque house and is chosen by Count Dracula to become a werewolf so he can take part in a race for monsters.

Despite looking cute and cuddly as a Werewolf, Shaggy obviously doesn't want to do it but Dracula promises to change him back to human if he wins. What follows is a Scooby Doo version of the Wacky Races as insane customized cars battle it out on an anything-goes Transylvanian race-course.

The majority of laughs come from Dracula, ever so desperate to keep his wicked plan from falling apart and always making a complete idiot of himself.

It's also new to see Shaggy not jump into Scooby's arms every time he sees a monster. And this time they're real too , not just some guy in a mask.

I would definitely recommend this to Scooby fans and those who are just total Scooby completists (like me). It's very funny and totally rewatchable.

The DVD is in 1.33:1, as drawn and comes with a Dolby Mono soundtrack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightfully Moronic
When this movie came out on DVD, I was tempted to buy it because I had vague recollections of liking it as a child. I was concerned, however, that it would turn out to be one of those things that doesn't quite transcend adulthood. Fortunately I had the opportunity to see it on TV recently and am now convinced that it is indeed worth buying. Not being a particular fan of classic Scooby, I had no problem with the scrapping of the traditional characters and plot conventions, although I'm sure this would disappoint many. The strength of this movie, to me, is it's complete absurdity. Shaggy is turned into a werewolf and, in order to regain his somewhat human form, must win a car race against several classic monsters. For reasons that were unclear to me, Dracula (who also announces the race with the aid of his ditzy girlfriend) is hellbent on preventing Shaggy and Scooby from winning. But not to worry, they have help--in the form of Scrappy and Shaggy's girlfriend Googy (how's that for a stoner name). Now we will all agree that Scrappy is really [not good], but fortunately he's not in this movie enough to get extremely annoying. Dracula's got pals, too: The Hunch Bunch, Crunch and Brunch. While the monsters and their cars and hijinks are entertaining, The Hunch Bunch is my favorite part of the movie. The bemonacled Brunch, who sounds curiously like Cary Elwes, seems intelligent, but he's just as stupid as the incoherent Crunch and thus ridiculous escapades ensue. Ultimately, and not surprisingly, a happy ending is attained and Shaggy, Googy, Scooby, and Scrappy return to domestic bliss. In short, this movie is [not good] and bad, but totally, totally fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Scooby Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf
A great classic Scooby doo movie than fans of old Hanna-Barbara storyline will enjoy. The only reason I give it 4 stars out of 5 is the one problem I always had with story concept. Dracula needs a werewolf but a midget werewolf is seen among Dracula's crew of monsters throughout the entire film. From kid to adult that always bugged me a bit. It a wonderful story where Shaggy wears his alternate red shirt and Googie his girlfriend is a great new character to the Scooby Universe. In them movie shaggy is turned into a werewolf and in Wacky Racers style have to win a crazy race to get changed back.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT VIDEO
THis is arguably the bestScooby doo movie of all time!
I know somepeople don't like scrappy, which I don't understand. I like Scrappy. I think he makes these videos much better, he's a great, funny character if you ask me. Also in this movie, there is no mystery machine, Freddy, Velma, or Daphane. this may disapoint some people, but it doesn't bother me. I find Daphane annoying, same with Fred, and velma doesn't belong in this movie.
Oh, and about the mystery machine, sorry we're not in the 70's anymore. Shaggy has a car in this movie that is a million times cooler than the mystery machine. When you see the movie you'll find out. Fred, Daphane and Velma just don't belong in this movie. They're not neccesarry charactors anyway, beacause they solve mysteries and this movie isn;t a mystery!
In this movie Shaggy, Scooby and Srappy run into trouble when Shaggy is turned into a werewolf by the hunch bunch, who are count dracula'a assistants. In order to be changed back to normal, shaggy must enter and win the annual monster road rally in transylvania, but dracula isn't gonna make it easy! This movie is very comical and funny. It's much better than much of the garbage that's on TV today. I give this movie 2 thumbs up! buy this movie, and you won't regret it!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars funny
shaggy got turned into a werewolf by count dracula and he was forced to drive in the monster road race to replace wolfie the werewolf who just retired to florida and won't be racing again and dracula promises to change him and send him scooby scrappy and googy back where they came from but he lied and wants shaggy to lose so he could remain being a werewolf forever he and the hunch bunch come up with tricks and evil plans and schemes ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a natural pump for the heart
I saw this movie in vhs in 1988 in England, but 10 years before i bought the soundtrack in USA. The only music that i love is rock n'roll and in this movie the jerry lewis' performance were like to have a eletric flash inside me.
I love to have this movie on vhs because i live in Europe and maybe i will have some problem with dvd.

Forever rock n' roll

5-0 out of 5 stars 50's Music Still ROCK's My World
Wow, have just caught this being shown on AMC...hadn't seen it in 20 years!! When I was young in the 1970's, AMERICAN HOT WAX, AMERICAN GRAFFITTI, and THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY got me into fifties music....hated Disco even at age 9, because 50's and 60's music was much cooler! Bought Buddy Holly's PEGGY SUE as my first 45 single...this film taught me about Alan Freed, the struggle to establish rock'n'roll in the eyes of Society.....absolute crackin' tunes: Mr. Lee, Splish-splash, There Goes my Baby, Great Balls of Fire!! Wish this DVd or VHS or the soundtrack was available now!
Will just have to jive along with my off-air AMC tape till then!

4-0 out of 5 stars Father of Rock 'n' Roll
Out of the two movies made about Alan Freed (the 1999 TV-movie "Mr. Rock'n'Roll, The Alan Freed Story" being pure trash in my opinion) this one captures the spirit of the '50's era, when Rock'n'Roll music was still young. Portraying one week in the life of Alan Freed as he attempts to put on a First Anniversary Concert at the Brooklyn Paramount and gets hassled and harrassed by city officials and record companies alike, the movie recreates the delightful music of the times, including memorable performances by Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Jay Leno and Fran Drescher, then unknowns at the time this movie was released, are a delight to watch. The late Tim McIntire gives a stellar performance as Alan Freed, the best portrayal I've seen yet. While there are some fictional characters in this motion picture (Larraine Newman as "Teenage Louise")and some facts are historically inaccurate, the movie is still a pleasure to watch, alot of fun. I definitely recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rave Review - and it isn't even out yet!
"American Hot Wax" is one of my all-time favorite movies. I have a marginal quality VHS of it taped off the TV. I have been trying, literally for years, to find a legal copy. It was issued on VHS, then taken off the market with only a few copies sold.

It's the story of Alan Freed and his first Rock and Roll Concert at the Brooklyn Paramount. The music is wonderful!: Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry...

Lorraine Newman as an aspiring teen-age songwriter, Jay Leno as Freed's chauffeur...

A must-see if you are into original rock and roll.

Tell 'em to get that DVD out!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun even if you weren't there!
Even if you weren't around for Alan Freed's Rock and Roll shows of the 1950s (and being born in 1964, I certainly wasn't), you will love this movie, as it appeals to the teen in all of us. It captures the excitement of teens lvong and perfoming a new music all of their own. Both the actors, the actual performers (Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Screamin Jay, etc.), and the film's teen audience seems to enjoy what they're doing and the enjoyment is contagious. The live stage show at the Paramount is even more fun to watch than some actual rock concert films! This appears to really capture the spirit of the times. I recall seeing this film when I was 14 in 1978, and I left the theater wishing that my generation also had a music all of it's own. Sure enough, rap music came out a year or so later. ...
