On regular television, punctuated by frenetic commercials, the leisurely pace of the horror miniseries Rose Red probably felt grueling; but on its own terms, the effect is like settling into a long book full of detail--a book not unlike those of Stephen King, who wrote the script. The story (about a researcher into the paranormal who takes a team of psychics into a haunted house) recycles themes that King has used before--a telekinetic girl, a house with its own consciousness--but for his fans, the familiarity is probably comfortable and even enjoyable. The cast (including Nancy Travis, Julian Sands, and Melanie Lynsky from Heavenly Creatures) give committed performances, and the special effects are television-grade but used pretty well. Most of it doesn't make much sense, but at its best Rose Red is absurd and creepy at the same time. --Bret Fetzer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Some Houses Are Born Bad"
Rose Red was N Xcellent piece of work by the master of horror, Stephen King. When I found about the movie's premier last year, U would not believe how Xcited I was 2 C it. It was worth getting Xcited over. The special effects R amazing and the ghost make-up is stunningly scary. In fact, the whole story-line was incredibly horrifying.

Nancy Travis was absolutely fantastic in her role of Joyce Reardon. Matt Keeslar was pretty good in his role of Steven Rimbaeur, only because his acting was a little dry. Matt Ross was really agitating in his role of the Post Cognitive, Emery Waterman. I thought that Julian Sands was awesome in the role of telepathic Nick Hardaway. Kimberly J. Brown was really wonderful as the autistic, yet telekentic Annie Wheaton. Judith Ivey (one of my favorite actors inth film) was incredible in role of the automatic writer, Cathy.

If N E body is looking 4 a good Stephen King horror flick, check out Rose Red. It's a real Scream.

3-0 out of 5 stars Stephen Kings Haunted Abode.
The Chilling Tale of Dr. Joyce Reardon an obsessed psychology professor who commissions a team of psychics and a gifted 15 year old autsitic girl, Annie Wheaten, to literally wake up a supposedly dormant haunted mansion.....ROSE RED. Thier efforts unleash a myriad of spirites and uncover horrifying secrets of the generations whom have lived and died there.
This movie has lots of extras from a complete abc documentary, to design artwork, to a diary, a making of documentary, and production commentary. Dolby Digital 5.1
Not the best stephen King Movie.....yet not the worst.

1-0 out of 5 stars was expecting MUCH better
If you're looking for a good haunted house movie, pass this one up. Its overly long and totally disjointed. The obvious places for commercial breaks don't help. None of the characters are sympathetic in any way. And the ending is neither satisfying nor cathartic. It just ends.

Again, if you want a GOOD haunted house movie, watch 'The Haunting' (1963) with Julie Harris or 'The Legend of Hell House' with Roddy McDowall.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic movie...Stephen King strikes again!
Well, Stephen King did an absolutely fantastic job writing this story for the production of this movie. Even though the movie is 4 hours long, the movie didn't bore me for one second. I really enjoyed this, especially Annie, the little autistic girl. I thought she was a very good touch to the story line. I would recommend this movie to anyone who's out for a good thrill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scared the s**t outta me!
I thought I had seen so many horror movies that I had desensitised myself to fear and shock. I can honestly count on a single hand the number of movies that have actually frightened me, and none have done it as thoroughly as Rose Red. Let's face it, the storyline is flimsy, and the acting is atrocious but it has such a powerful aura of suspense that even a shot of trees seems scary. For four hours I sat sweating and white-knuckled, gripping my seat. Don't think I could do it again but it was worth it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this movie it is so funny! You MUST buy it today!!!
If you like dumb humor or are looking for a great movie buy this one. It is the best movie of the year! I GIVE IT 5 STARS!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL CAST! CAN GET STUPID BUT FUNNY!
I thought that Lisa Kudrow was very good in the role of Romy and I thought that Mira Sorvino was good too but I felt that another actress should have played michelle. Other than that it was a great movie in which everyone tryed hard.

3-0 out of 5 stars funny and quick
this movie is funny, the way they portray 1980's is on course of that behavior back then.then lisa kudrow playing a dunce is always funny even though she is really brilliant and mira does a real good job in this movie.but are stupid quirky standards in the usa stopping people from doing what they could really do in high school movie and thats why they only go so far with this stupid immaturity crap in this movie.but over in europe this movie wouldve gone alot further and been alot better because in europe the standards are far more sexual than in usa.then afterwards the movie really gets you rooting for lisa and mira and its pretty good movie where you can watch again and again.well if you cant find a movie and your last resort is this movie, well then give a try and see what you think

4-0 out of 5 stars Dumbest movie around? ...well, DUH!
This is one of those movies that preach it's OK to be yourself, no matter how nerdy or pea-brained you may be... ...provided you have great looks, a great body or lots of money! Bottom line? Meanness isn't cool, but overweight is worst (neither characters get a happy ending)! Very funny picture, though, only I think they overdid it in the last reel. Should have ended right after the hillarious "Time after time" dance scene.

3-0 out of 5 stars Romy and Michelle have nothing on Thelma and Louise.
Apparently this movie has quite a cult following. I know 2 people off hand that have wore this film out big time. One of whom is my mother. What surprises me is that this movie is so well regarded by everyone. I've seen it twice, thinking I may have missed something the first time. It had it's moments, like the surreal dancing sequence at the end of the film, that was quite touching. The music was fabulous, considering it's from my generation (The generation X!). The story? Well, that's when we run into some problems. The only thing i disliked about the plot was the conventionality and the stereotypical portrayal of high school life. I think there's enough films about the trials and tribulations of a nerd surviving the perils of high school. One other high point of the film is Janine Garofalo. Although her character wasn't explored in depth, she gave good..... performance. I wish she would have cut loose more though, (like more swearing and raunch). So if you want to hear Mira Sorvino do her best Bill Pullman, check this movie out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT movie no one knows about !! GET IT !!
"Opportunity Knocks" is a cute, funny movie. I have this movie and without a doubt, it's one of my favorites. It is Dana Carvey's first "starring" role as something other than a Saturday Night Live character and he is excellent. This movie never got the accolades it deserved (perhaps not enough press coverage). This movie is MILES above "Clean Slate" (Dana's second movie). I have felt for years that this movie was a wonderful little secret that only I and a few others in the world knew about. Dana really shines here. If you like Dana Carvey...if you like really funny, sweet little movies...if you have a sense of humor and like a good laugh - buy this movie, PLEASE. I want to share it with you !!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great movie, bad actress!
This movie is one of Carvey's best! He's very charming and as always funny. You can't help but start to love his charecter. It was an excelent movie, and I would give it a full 5, if it wasn't for Eddie's (Carvey) love intrest. I don't know if the charecter was played out perfectly, and it wasn't that interesting. Or the actress, Julia Campbell, didn't give it her best. She seemed very boring, and in many ways wrong for the part, and the guy. Other than that, this is an excelent film!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Carvey Review
A great movie, one of my favorites! Carvey does excellent acting and the karaoke scene is pure gold! Dana Carvey should consider acting again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dana Carvey's best film
Dana Carvey plays a small time conman named eddie whos about to hit the big leagues. He breaks into a house and is mistaken for the housesitter. That's when the movie takes off. He has to play it cool to keep his cover and not let the girl he loves know he is a fraud. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Poor Man's Psychological Thriller ...
Sad to see such wasted talent as Arnold Vosloo (who is horribly miscast as a far too attractive and far from menacing serial killer) in this unfortunate excuse for a psychological thriller. If, like me, you have recently become a fan of this sexy and darkly intense actor since this summer's mega-hit "The Mummy", you will be pleased at the amount of screen time and dialogue he has but sorely disappointed if you are a fan of the psychological thriller genre. Gary Busey seems to sleepwalk through the movie when any other journalist would likely be traumatized at being stalked by a serial killer. More interviews with the killer would have provided more insight into this character. Lots of potential for an interesting study of the mind of a killer, but somebody missed the boat on that one. In short, if you're a Vosloo fan, give it a look but if you're a psychological thriller movie fan, give it a definite pass!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
I kept getting the feeling that there was too much cut from this movie. I'd love to see an uncut version... of course, maybe it's just wishful thinking.. you know, that some of the holes in the movie would be filled in. Still, overall it's a good movie, if you can get past the little things (can't think of any examples right now, but just little things that they don't bother to explain).

1-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE TRIPE!
A saturday night walk to our local video store was about to change my girlfriend and my own life forever. Whilst browsing the shelves at the store we noticed 'Diary of a serial killer' staring screen legend mr gary busey. Once we arrived home we popped the dvd in the machine and off we went. Well, were do i start. This is without doubt the most badly acted and appalling movie ever made. Please find listed our reasons for hating this film:- 1) GARY BUSEY....his wooden acting is hilarious, check out some of his reactions when facing a deadly serial killer, like he has just met his granny for tea. He shows no real emotion when find dead bodies....his TEETH....his awful cheesy grins......his chunky brown cords 2) THE MISTAKES.....plastic bottle........putting in a stunt double for busey, with the most ridiculous wig on, check out when busey is knocked down by vosloo at the end....its not him lying there. 3) THE EXTRAS 4) THE DIALOGUE...for example 'i'm hungry, i'd like a hot dog'

THIS IS THE WORST FILM EVER MADE AND WE HAVE WATCHED IT 30 TIMES OR MORE IN 3 MONTHS......BUSEY< YOU ARE SO RUBBISH< YOU KEN BARLOW LOOKALIKE

4-0 out of 5 stars Madness Explored
Like so many others, I too have become a recent Vosloo watcher and bought the DVD of this film for that reason. This is not a film I would have purchased ordinarily, nor would I have attended it in a theater. (I spend too much of my time keeping others alive to relish watching someone else trash viable young adults in the full bloom of youth and life). Still, one can hardly but appreciate the talent that went into bringing Stephan to reality on the screen. I have met two psychopathic personalities, one professionally while I was working on a neurology ward and one in private life while I was living in Egypt. In both instances in retrospect, I am especially amazed at the skill they exhibited in enlisting the cooperation of their victims--myself among others--in their enterprises. One not only believed in what they said and did, one actually WANTED to believe in what they said and did. Nor if I were to have a third encounter with such an individual could I honestly say I would be any the less vulnerable for the experience. Mr. Vosloo's characterization of Stephan is, therefore, not only creditable it is positively chilling. (One wonders how he went about preparing for the role.) His ability to show up virtually everywhere without warning was also effective (though not unpredictable given the genre). The only film I've seen wherein the character--in this case a female--was more effectively menacing, merciless, and everywhere is an Egyptian film in Arabic, entitled Shamps. Mr. Busey's character was also believable in that he entered a web of terror of his own volition (and probably arrogance) with Mr. Vosloo's very dangerous spider waiting for him in the middle of it. His ineffectual efforts to escape it and his ultimate involvement of others in the terror is also creditable. My only criticism of the film is that the story behind the title character's madness was neglected, religated to the experience of a disillusioned teenager--though recent events have proved graphically how violent and tragic that can become--this was, after all, the diary of a serial killer, and I would have liked to have known more about the making of such a madman. Over all, though I cannot honestly say I "liked" the film, I still thought it was a good one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vosloo fan reviews Diary of a serial killer
This is a movie about a reporter (Busey) who unknowingly witnesses a serial killer at work. The killer (Vosloo) finds out that someone just saw what he did, he confronts Busey and finds out that he's a reporter. Busey saves himself by offering to do a story on Stefan (Vosloo) and in turn gets in over his head. I believe this is one of Vosloo's best films. He is believable and captivating in this role. This film is why I became a Vosloo fan in the first place. Highly reccomended for adlut audiences. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars horrid
this movie is horrid--i wonder if the acting was supposed to be this bad on purpose. and the message--that "success" somehow makes you white--the charicatures may have been there to make a point, and yeah it's playing like a period piece (early 90's) -- but why did baby bam (jungle brothers) have to be in this? as the narrator, "sidekick", he was the best thing about the flick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Decent...
I thought this was a pretty cool movie for the time period it came out in. It even had a message in it, which is : never forget who you are, where you have come from and gone through when you reach the success you set out to reach in life.

1-0 out of 5 stars it's garbage
This movie is apparently a comedy that turns out not to be funny when it tries to be and when it doesn't. I'm trying to think of one redeeming quality this movie contains, but there is none. Don't buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh, but no . . .
Don't waste your time with this one. It could have been a good movie, but the script got in the way. The only good thing about this flick is future "Living Single" star T.C. Carson (whom, you'll notice, NEVER mentions this movie). ... Read more
