4-0 out of 5 stars Christy Chung is Mesmerizing!
I am glad I had seen this movie, because it's Christy Chung breakthrough performance, at the same time it's a very sexually disturbing film which reminded me of Juliette Binoche's Damage. I am not a fan of Christy, but it's amazing to see her transformed herself into a highly sexualized and Westernized stepmother role in this period drama that dealt with issues including abuse, abandonment, abortion, sexual perversion, and revenge in a wealthy Thai household. Also, she not only looked glamorous and beautiful, she also learnt all her lines in Thai. She gets to sleep with the adolence lead and another woman.

A few disturbing scenes in this film including the little boy witnessing his father having sex, and the scene when Christy assisted her lover to have an abortion that caused a massive of amount of bleeding.

This film is provocative, and can be overwhelming for some mainstream viewers. If you are a fan of Christy Chung, then you should not miss it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Visually Stunning, Bold, and Intensely Moving Film
JAN DARA is one of those rare films that succeeds on many levels: the story as adapted from a famous Thai novel 'The Story of Jan Dara' by Utsana Phleungtham is one of intrigue and exploration of lust, revenge, and thwarted passion; the cinematography by Nattawut Kittikhun is incredibly atmospheric while at the same time pausing for some of the most beautiful studies of nature on film; the musical score by Chartchai Pongprapapan and Pakawat Waiwitaya mixes the exotic pentatonic Oriental melodies with quaint excerpts from early recordings of Richard Strauss and Puccini operas; the direction by Nonzee Nimibutr is so sensuously elegant that this film firmly establishes him as an important figure in international filmmaking.

Simply stated, the story is about Jan Dara, the son of a woman who died giving birth to him, his life as an abusedand unwanted child in the house of his 'father' spent searching for the love of his lost mother, his first encounters with passion and love, his adaptation to the realities of surviving in a family fraught with conflicts and bizarrely tangled interrelationships, and the disillusionment that comes with the discovery of his true family history and how the way his life comes full circle. It is a period piece and includes the outside effects of WW II in an otherwise sequestered house of strange isolation.

While JAN DARAincludes many sensuous scenes (the 'first memory' of Jan Dara is watching his 'father' in an indiscretion with his beloved aunt), these scenes are photographed so sensitively that they become studies like Kama Sutra paintings rather thanbeing vulgar. The story makes many flashbacks and flashforwards and keeping the various actors at the different ages of these sequences straight can be problematic. The cast is uniformly excellent and credible, even when they may be too evil to watch!

Here is an example of Oriental films that don't rely on choreographic martial arts to sustain interest. In that way it is similar to the beautiful SPRING, SUMER, AUTUMN, WINTER, SPRING, and for those who enjoy the subtle arts of Asia this film is a must.Highly recommended. Grady Harp, May 05

3-0 out of 5 stars a victim of sequalitis
this movie was a pretty good sequel to the first one. but it should have been better. i think that if it werent for the acting ability of brigitte lin this movie would have been a flop. dont get me wrong its a good movie but when you compare it to the first one you can tell it falls short and carries all the symptoms of sequalitis. the best part of the whole movie, which about 90 min. in length, is the end scenes. even though i give it a lower rating i would recommend getting this one, or you will never know how the story ends.

2-0 out of 5 stars What was this
Bride with the white hair had hardly any action and really disappointed me. I like the story line and everything and it's pretty sad, but I wanted to see more fight scenes. Don't get this movie is you are expecting action.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mindy's Review
well as a Brigitte Lin Chin Hsia Fan, i would say that part 2 wasen't all that cause part 2 can't even compare with part 1 but, the story line is kinda dull but, this movie is sooo dam worth siting and staring at the screen just to see the end. where Brigitte and Leslie comes back together as Brigitte white hair turn back to black (cause they forgave each other and kiss while i guess they died while makine out haha) so worth sit through all them exta stuff just to see the end! but, if you haven't seen part 1 then i really suggest that you should see part 1. well if you didn't like part 1 then you souldn't get part 2 just think of it as leslie died in the moutain waiting for the rose! haha And of course you should see Brigitte Lin other movies such as Peking Opera Blues......etc

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie..but watch Part 2 first..
This is a great movie and well done. The only bad thing here is that, Part 2 was suppose to come out before part 1. Becuz after watching part 1, you get the feeling you want to watch part 2 with hopes of the characters continuing just like that.. Trust me, this is one of the great movies ever, watch 2 first, you would be craving to watch part 1.. And there ya go, you would watch it over again.. Well Done..

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as everyone makes it out to be
While it certainly isn't up to par with its predecessor, Bride with White Hair 2 is not an awful movie. I admit that I bought the movie because of the sheer beauty of the first; and it did try its best to rectify the open ending that the original had.

The fighting scenes were bizarre and interesting to say the least, with Brigitte Lin's white hair strangling and piercing bodies all over the place, and the story was, while not terribly engaging, was not tepid enough to be utterly uninteresting. While the relationship between Sunny Chan and Joey Maan is not as interesting as that of Leslie Cheung and Brigitte Lin (hence the four stars, though I wish I could give 4.5 stars..), the young couple were somewhat convincing. Veterans, Brigitte Lin and Leslie Cheung electrifies in their wondrous renditions of the two doomed lovers. Too bad there's only a few minutes of screen time for the pair ;-(

Bride with White Hair 2 certainly is not a bad movie; living up to the original Bride with White Hair's greatness was not an easy task mind you, so the sequal did a decent job. Comparing BWWH2 with other HK wuxia flicks, this one is solid. If you want BWWH2 to give you the same, mind-numbing experience that the original delivers, you're going to be in for a disappointment. Watch the movie on its own, without comparing it to the magnificence of the original. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars CHRISTY CHUNG AND I! SITTIN' IN A TREE! TRIPLE X BABY! WOOH!
This is a Black Belt Theatre double feature! Red Wolf directed
by PING and Awakening Punch fight choreographer by PING! Are these movies good! Red Wolf is a 1994 film that is like a very violent Under Seige! But a far as action goes, Red Wolf is a thousand times better! Story wise, it's not that great! But it does have Christy Chung in here! She's a hot number! You get to see a close up on her butt which is reason enough to buy this! Red Wolf is in original language with Chinese/English subs.! Awakening Punch is an early-mid 70's kung fu film! The kung fu in this one is pretty good! But 2 things not to like about this
movie is bad picture (especially on the night fights to where you only see shadows and all that)and a very retarded story! Awakened Punch is english dub! QUALITY - The DVD plays how it's suppose to! They did nothing to improve the picture! There are no extras, but this product is cheap! I liked Red Wolf and Awakening Punch was average at best!

1-0 out of 5 stars Well, that's 90 minutes of my life I won't be getting back
What do you get when you cross legendary action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping (here directing rather than choreographing) with the plot of Speed 2, a bland leading man, an immensely irritating leading lady, an obnoxious and untalented child actress and some tired and uninspired action scenes? Unfortunately, the answer is a complete waste of time. Probably a career low for all concerned, it's a real slog getting through to the end of this surprisingly cheap-looking and occasionally amateurish mess, all hope that it will get better being continually thwarted as it staggers from tired action scene to tired action scene. And how can you root for a hero who is so inept that, despite being head of security on a liner, fails to prevent the villains killing every single one of the passengers and crew except the aforementioned irritating females - probably the two people most audience members will want out of the picture and fast?

Worse than Speed 2 - yes, you read that right: even worse than Speed 2. Not worth the time of day. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining...
This 90 minute action adventure is entertaining especially if you enjoy Jackie Chan movies. The film is full of the familiar Jackie Chan stunts and fighting sequels with some "matrix" like effects thrown in.
The story revolves around a young Chinese boy who is kidnapped by an international smuggler called Snakehead (Julian Sands) and a medallion considered the holy grail of eastern mythology which holds the secret to eternal life. The legend states that every thousand years a child is chosen who can combine the two halves of the medallion and restore life to the dead.
Agent Eddie Yang (Chan) working with Interpol in Hong Kong discovers that Snakehead has kidnapped a boy from a Buddhist Temple, but doesn't understand why. The chase for Snakehead and ultimately the boy leads Eddie to Dublin, Ireland.
Upon locating the boy at a shipyard, Eddie is drowned in a cargo container that sinks to the bottom of the harbor. Unbeknownst to anyone the boy has the ability to resurrect Eddie and does so with a medallion giving Eddie super human strength and immortal power.
Snakehead seeks to gain the powers of the medallion to become totally immortal. However, the interesting thing is one must die first to be restored immortal.

2-0 out of 5 stars Forgettable
Jackie Chan has really cranked out a lot of movies and I have found some of them quite entertaining with action packed fight scenes, good stories, great stunts, and Chan's self deprecating sense of humor. This is not one of them.

There is not much to the plot - Chan is a Hong Kong cop facing off against a super criminal "Snakehead". Snakehead is after a medallion that is possessed by a kid. The medallion gives people special powers. Snakehead kidnaps the kid and Chan is in the hunt to save the kid and keep the medallion out of Snakehead's hands.

Unfortunately, the plot is awful and makes little sense. The fight scenes are not very good. The movie essentially breaks down into a not very interesting series of vignettes that I could never decide whether they were supposed to be funny, scary, thrilling - they were just plan dumb.

Chan would be better served to make fewer, higher quality movies than to churn out forgettable fare like The Medallion.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not one of jackies best.
Maybe it is because I love jackie's earlier movies which he surpassed himself in, but I was very disappointed with this film. Okay, so it's funny in parts but having said this that's about it. I realise that jackie is trying different things in his new films, but for me I preferred the original hong kong movies. I really never thought I would ever give a JC movie 3 stars, but I have to be honest and do so. Sorry jackie. But I am still an avid fan of yours.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Chan Movie Ever
I haven't seen every Jackie Chan movie, but I've seen many of them and this is the worst. I've never walked out of a film before, not even considered it, but opening night I was there to support Jackie, and half-way in I nearly got up and left. Bad, really, really bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars superb
this movie i would say is superb. since this movie has alot of action. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars tall skinny kid rocked
the movie's protagonist, tall skinny kid beat up on a lot of people in this movie directed by martial arts chordinator yuen woo ping. the kid
he sneaks out to find trouble, steals some guys girl and calls her rat, beats up on his dad with his ming dynasty pony tail, has a smartalec mouth, steals other peoples scissor kick moves, gets accused of murder, and kicks the living snot out of the british opium dealing bad boss at the end. another typical hk movie. i loved it

5-0 out of 5 stars Wo ping masterpiece
Don't pay any attention to the reviews that say that this is yuen wo ping's worst movie. I'ts actually one of his best. Don't get me wrong though, this movie doesn't have the greatest plot and what the subtitles say is sometimes(hopefully) not what the actors are actually saying. But, anyone who watches Yuen Woo Ping's movies should know that they're all about the fight scenes. Insane superhuman lightning fast fight scenes. This is where this movie truly shines. Nobody does fight scenes as well as woo ping. I recommend this or any yuen woo ping directed movie to anyone interested in hong kong martial arts. Anyone looking for a great story may be disapointed. But for me the fight scenes more than made up for this err.

5-0 out of 5 stars Twin Warriors 2
This is part 2 of Yuen Woo-Ping's Twin Warriors with Jet Li & Michelle Yoeh. Both films are great. In fact all of Yuen Woo-Ping's films are great.

Buy and enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie for Martial Artists
Although marred by some wired jumps, this movie really delivers in terms of martial arts performance. The director seems really interested in highlightly the martial arts expertise of the actors. Jackie Wu is a Tai Chi expert in real life, and is able to apply his Tai Chi techniques in a very convincing way. Hai Yu, who plays his father, is actually a Preying Mantis master. Perhaps to give him a chance to show what he is best at, the director includes a scene in which the father and son pair suddenly shift from using Tai Chi techniques to using Mantis techniques. So if you are a real martial arts fan, this movie is definitely for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this movie! One of the best martial arts films.
This movie ranks up there with some of the best martial arts films ever made. If you like Hai Yu (Master from the Jet Li Shaolin films) then you'll love this film. Christy Chung is irresistably beautiful and Jacky Wu's fighting scenes easily match that of my favorite Jet Li movies. This is a MUST HAVE for any martial arts film fan. I'm going to enjoy watching this one over and over. The production is top notch and the fight scenes (although some are a little wire-assisted; not too bad) just plain rock. Whoever it was that wrote the bad review obviously doesn't comprehend what a good martial arts film is all about. Buy it now, you won't regret it! ... Read more

Hong Kong martial arts master Jet Li plays a bodyguard from the Beijing secret police, sent to Hong Kong to protect a beautiful young witness to a mob killing, played by Christy Chung. Li turns her home into a high-security prison, complete with video cameras surveying every room, even her bedroom. Furious, Chung resists his efforts to protect her--until the threat to her life is made abundantly clear in a spectacular shopping mall shootout. As is natural under such circumstances, romance begins to bloom, much to the dismay of Chung's lawyer boyfriend, who hired Li in the first place. Made in the last few years before the British province of Hong Kong was returned to the rule of mainland China, The Bodyguard from Beijing makes many (possibly anxious) jokes about the differences between the austere Communist bodyguard and the lackadaisical H.K. police. Li's character is so consistently stone-faced that his usual boyish charm is repressed, and the movie emphasizes gunplay over acrobatic kung fu action, but there are still kicks galore and the usual Hong Kong combination of spectacular violence and outrageous sentimentality--all captured in stylish, glossy cinematography. And how often do you get to see venetian blinds used as an offensive weapon? --Bret Fetzer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A humorous and touching action-packed film
The Bodyguard From Beijing is classic Jet Li, featuring him doing some of his most outstanding moves. The movie is full of fierce action, but it takes plenty of time to develop the characters, too.

I enjoyed many aspects of the movie, the fact that it prefers to develop subtle romantic tension between Jet Li and Christy Chung than to have them kissing each other. Interspersed within these moments are some kinetically charged action sequences that make Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme movies feel lethargic in comparison. Li is a real treat to watch on the screen, moving gracefully and doing all the great moves and martial arts his fans are accustomed to. Surprisingly, he shows he can hold his own with a gun, too.

New Jet Li fans should try to look for this film. There's a lot to appreciate about it, the film's full of great action, it's humorous, has characters we care about, and knows how to thrill the audience at the same time.

4-0 out of 5 stars originally Bodyguard From Beijing
This will be Dimension's fourth release/re-release of Jet Li's Hong Kong movies. Defender's original title was BODYGUARD FROM BEIJING. In this movie Jet Li plays a serious, no-nonsense bodyguard who is sent to Hong Kong to protect a witness (Christy Cheung) before her court appearence. He is paid by her very rich boyfriend who often takes her for granted. Jet Li's character and Christy Cheung character start off not liking each other but they soon begin to fall in love. Good story (similar to THE BODYGUARD) and some good action sequences spread throughout the movie. The action sequence in the shopping mall and the final one was very well done. The bad guy in the movie was also cool. I enjoyed this movie alot and thought it was one of Jet Li's better movies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good drama and action sequences
Even in a love movie Jet never fails to deliver. Sent from Beijing to protect the fiancee of a businessman, Jet gets straight to work by laying off the entire security staff. The rest of the movie involves him fighting with the fiancee about his hard hand tactics, eventually leading to feelings of love.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stop butchering the Hong Kong films
The film is Bodyguard From Beijing and not The Defender as Disney has renaimed it.
AVOID ANY DVD FROM DISNEY/DIMENSION THAT DOES NOT HAVE THE ORIGINAL FILM.
Show them that we are aware of what they are doing

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy Bodyguard from Beijing - Not The Enforcer
...P>This film was originally called The Bodyguard from Beijing. This film has been cut by 2 mins and has a dreadful dubbed audio instead of subtitles. If you buy this movie you are only supporting the likes of Dimension getting their hands on more movies and doing the same again. If only they would be respectful with their releases like Hong Kong Legends and Celestial.

on a further point, this is not even in Jet Li's top 10 movies, it is very weak. ... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good!
Here is an example of how to make an excellent movie without having a strong script. Loveable characters, great music, great action, great cinematography make this an excellent hong kong action thriller. simon Yam as an undercover cop, yu Rong Guang as the bad guy and Christy Chung as....the girl in between all give strong performances. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Watched this 3 times in one night!
This movie was a great thriller. Christy Cheung was superb. She flowed through the movie and gave a stunning performance. I hope to see more of her! This classic cop versus big and Bad guy had a unique twist without martial arts. I loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Explosive Hong Kong Action Flick
This movie between a crime boss and an undercover cop, although not an uncommon theme in many Hong Kong action flicks, is unique in many ways. First, awesome acting by the major characters (Simon Yam, as the undercover cop; Yu Rong-Guang, as the crime boss; and Christy Cheung, as the girl in between). Secondly, the well-proportioned combination platter of explosive action, character-development, and drama. Thirdly, the creative cinematography and direction. All-in-all, a very impressive offering from that segment of the Hong Kong action genre that doesn't use martial arts to invoke intensity and edge-of-your-seat excitement. A must-see for any action fan! ... Read more
