3-0 out of 5 stars I did not like the movie.
I honestly did not like the movie more than the book. Why? because the movie just focus on some of the events of the book. Not the major events. I like the book it gives more details and more understanding (clear).

1-0 out of 5 stars This movie was to different from the book.
The movie skips important parts of the book. Also I would imagine that Huckleberry Finn would look a bit tougher. I mean look at the kid who is playing Huck- a little red head that doesn't even know how to act. Don't buy this movie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Something 'Worthwhile' has this way come
Excellent film adaptation to Mr. Bradbury's whimsical book by the same title.

The film is cast in the autumn (the autumn of life?) and a small town around turn of the century America (our dream of what America should be?). Two boys, Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade are excited to hear of a carnival coming to town (remember our youth when autumn always brought some sort of carnival to your town?). However, this carnival is no ordinary one. It's proprieter, Mr. Dark, offers people what they desire most -- at a fearsome price.

Jim and Will discover the underlying nature of Mr. Dark, his menions and the carnival and end up as quarry for the mysterious, sinister man. Will's father, Charles Halloway - the town librarian - is an unlikely hero who faces his own fears and temptations to protect the two youths from Mr. Dark.

Not really bloody or scary, I'd say the theme of this movie (that of facing the realities of life) creates uneasiness because of the familiar setting and its dealing with normal everyday people and their dreams/wishes.

The movie is well done and entertaining. Certainly worth a look. You might consider before allowing younger children to view it - it would probably give them dreams.

~P~

2-0 out of 5 stars Love Bradbury! ...not so much love for film adaptation -
Director, Jack Clayton, The Innocents, [an excellent film...] Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) -- Staring Jason Robards and Jonathan Pryce. This screenplay adaptation (1983), by the author, of his own novel Something Wicked This Way Comes, is good only during scenes with Robards and Pryce (these scenes are VERY good) yet, the plot is motivated by the actions of the characters of the two boys, Will Holloway and Jim Nightshade who, were inadequately cast (it's hard to find good child actors). Along with not being shot very well (Director of Photography, Stephen H. Burrum [the writer of this review simply can't tolerate the day-for-night scenes.]), it also seems that, 10 to 18 pages of the original script are missing from the final cut (the whole Tom Fury, B-Story), and much of the special effects scenes are cut in such a way as to reveal they didn't work and had to be cut out &/or around; how sad. The story simply falls apart! Somehow, a BEAUTIFUL script ended up as a film that, "had to be saved." Such, is the way of Hollywood.

Something Wicked This Way Comes, is available in paperback, ISBN: 0380729407 based on the screenplay, Dark Carnival by Ray Bradbury, based on the short story, The Black Ferris (1948), by Ray Bradbury available in ISBN 0-394-51335-5

4-0 out of 5 stars Genuine Horror from Disney via Anchor Bay Comes
Based on the best-selling 1962 novel by venerable SF and horror writer Ray Bradbury--who also penned this cinematic adaptation--1983's SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES is the unabashedly nostalgic story of two young boys, Will Halloway (Vidal Peterson) and Jim Nightshade (Shawn Carson), who engage in a battle of wills with Mr. Dark (Jonathan Pryce), the nefarious proprietor of a preternatural carnival that that literally blows into the boys' hometown one brisk October night (circa 1940). When Will and Jim discover that Dark and his troupe of midway miscreants are hiding some evil secret that might endanger the town, the boys take it upon themselves to uncover the truth and protect their friends and neighbors.

Some viewers are surprised to learn that this somber film is a product of the Walt Disney Company. Though there are the lovable small-town characters that one expects from Disney, it is admittedly rare to find a Disney flick with an incorrigibly evil character such as Mr. Dark (obviously the Devil in all but name). It is also unusual for a Disney film to have such a grim atmosphere, at least one that is not regularly punctured with puerile comedic relief, but SOMETHING THIS WAY COMES has a consistently spooky ambiance and an earnestly frightening plot, both of which elevate it to the level of a genuine horror film DESPITE its Disney label.

The performances in SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES are top-notch. Jonathan Pryce is deliciously wicked as the enigmatic Mr. Dark--genre fans might recognize Pryce as the actor playing Governor Swann in the 2003 blockbuster PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL--and Jason Robards does a fine turn as the wise librarian father of young Will. Vidal Peterson and Shawn Carson, the two young actors portraying Will and Jim, are relative newcomers whose lack of substantial experience is an asset rather than a liability, as it actually adds to the realism of their characters' youthful innocence. Some of the seasoned actors that fill supporting and background parts also contribute greatly to the quality of the film. The gorgeous Pam Grier, star of several popular "blaxploitation" flicks in the 1970s, plays the carnival's witch-like fortune-teller; Diane Ladd plays Jim Nightshade's mother, a woman who is raising her son alone after both were abandoned by the boy's father; and Ellen Geer, daughter of the late Will Geer of TV's THE WALTONS, portrays the mother of Will Halloway. Horror fans might recognize the late Royal Dano in the role of Tom Fury, the lightning-rod salesman. During his lengthy career, the ubiquitous Dano appeared in such genre favorites as Hitchcock's THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY (1955), 7 FACES OF DR. LAO (1964), and KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE (1988); and also in episodes of genre TV shows like LOST IN SPACE, NIGHT GALLERY, AMAZING STORIES, and TWIN PEAKS.

Although the script does not have the same scope and attention to detail found in the novel, Bradbury has still done an exceptional job of translating to screenplay the novel's eerie essence and moral subtext. And director Jack Clayton does almost as well in visually interpreting Bradbury's script. He generates the perfect atmosphere for some genuinely creepy moments, and he is also quite adept at evoking Bradbury's primary theme of innocence lost.

SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES generates most of its chills and scares the old-fashioned way--through atmosphere, suggestion, good plotting, and great characterization. Unfortunately, the flick was originally released during the peak of the first big wave of slasher films in the early 1980s, and it was therefore unfairly ignored by moviegoers and panned by critics. But thanks to the cool folks at Anchor Bay, this little beauty has a new lease on life via DVD.

Anchor Bay's disc is short on extras, offering only the theatrical trailer and the option of viewing in either pan-and-scan or 1.66:1 Letterbox formats. But the digital transfer looks nearly pristine--even when viewed on a widescreen HDTV-- with only a few minor defects from the source print noticeable. In keeping with the subject matter, the film was shot with dark tones and subtle hues, and these come through wonderfully on the DVD. Serious collectors of horror films on DVD won't want to let this genre gem slip away.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than it Appears - Worthy of The Twilight Zone
I've read through several reviews and find myself in agreement with fans of this film. It is truly one of the most underrated films in Disney's library. Whether Disney has disowned it is questionable and I suspect there is a connection behind the scenes with Anchor Bay, just as there is (or was?) with Miramax Films.

The key to this film is that Bradbury captured the tone and flavor of his book perfectly. While nowhere near as complete as the book and the story told therein, it is, nonetheless, complete in and of itself. There's nothing missing for those who haven't read the book. But, if you liked the movie, go find a copy of his book and read it one dark and stormy night.

If you've seen some of the weird science before in other films, most likely it was because Bradbury wrote about it first. He is and was the Stephen King of his generation with such strange tales as The Illustrated Man and The Martian Chronicles (both are actually linked anthologies of his short stories).

If you haven't read the description of the film, it is a story about Middle America early in the first half of the Twentieth Century and two boys sharing their childhood. One comes from a respected, if unexciting family and the other from a less than honorable setting. Yet they live beyond their differences and hold on to their own special fantasies and memories in a Norman Rockwell sort of way. Life was simpler then than it is now, and yet it has its dark side, as the boys soon find out. Mr. Dark's Carnival has come to town in as mysterious way as it did in another time, many decades before, affecting all who became involved.

The film is deliciously handled with a flare that defies description, probably because Bradbury graced it with his retelling through the screenplay. Coupled with the compelling music that adds flavor and color to the outstanding cinematography, the film draws us into a Twilight Zone of the familiar and macabre.

The film is treated as one for children. It decidedly is not one for little ones who are half-awake, and yet the story is more disturbing to those who will think upon the hidden messages that are as old as time itself and what every parent dreads... What is to become of us? What is to become of our children? This is the very heart of the fear that is so omnipresent once the carnival arrives that dreadful night.

Don't just watch this story once. See it twice, but not on the same night. Give it some time to develop in your subconscious, and then, one autumn night, when the leaves are turning color, give it another look, ignoring the cliches it has spawned in other, later and lesser stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disney does horror... really!
No need to repeat the plot you can read about that plenty below. This review is for parents.

Something Wicked This Way Comes is very scary. Not only have the censors totally misjudged this film but it is still classed as a children's movie! What rubbish! This is horror through and through, although albeit it can still be watched by kids but most adults will think twice about what they have just shown to them.

PARENTS SHOULD WATCH THIS BEFORE SHOWING IT TO THEIR KIDS.

This is not your average "darker" childern's flick like the Dark Crystal or the Black Caldron. It is much darker than that. I also remember a very graphic hand crushing scene. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A movie for even non-western fans!
I'm not a western fan, but I enjoyed this movie! Country & western singer Willie Nelson does a great job portraying his villainy character, John Henry Lee, a person that tries to blow up a railroad. Former 70's teen rock idol Shaun Cassidy's acting has improved since his work as Joe Hardy on T.V.'s "Hardy Boys Mysteries", even though he still pursued his acting career after the show ended in T.V. and national theatre, and is now a T.V. producer and writer. He does fairly well playing a young gang leader named Cotton. For a T.V. movie, this is made on a good budget and still gets played on T.V. stations. Beginning with the murder of a young girl, a small cajun town in the Lousiana bayou runs rampant with accusations and suspicions! is there a vicious pack of killer dogs on the prowl? or, does the wealthy family outside of town have a terrible, oge-old secret? VERY GOOD STORY! WORTH YOUR $$$

2-0 out of 5 stars David Janssen: Sheriff...
David Janssen is the sheriff of a small Louisiana town. When a girl is found murdered (was it a man or wild dogs that killed her?), things look like they're going to get exciting. But then, looks can be deceiving. Everyone sort of stands around talking. And talking. Sheriff Janssen investigates by driving to the homes of various suspects to... talk. And talk. A posse is formed to hunt down and kill any stray dogs roaming around. Finally, the dead girl's brother ends up in jail for slugging the town doctor, who had gotten the girl pregnant. The werewolf shows up, tears the bars off the window, kills the deputy, and murders the brother in his jail cell. Now we're getting somewhere! Well, not really. Nothing else happens that could be described as remotely interesting. The werewolf (Bradford Dillman) looks like a man with a dirty nose who needs a shave. His sister (Barbara Rush) spends most of the movie talking with David Janssen. And talking. And talking...

1-0 out of 5 stars MOON OF THE WOLF
This movie is CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For being one of those 1972 horror classics, it definitely isn't! It is so boring and the wolf doesn't come till the end of the movie. In the future I hope movies never ever turn out to be as bad as this one!

3-0 out of 5 stars How's it bayou?
Based on a novel by Leslie Whitten, this made-for-TV thriller blends a murder-mystery with an old-fashioned werewolf story. David Janssen is the southern sheriff with a string of bloody murders on his hands. An incoherent, bed-ridden old man down on the bayou babbles in a Cajun dialect of something that sounds like "luke-a-ruke." As the victims pile up, the sheriff finally learns that the old man is saying "Werewolf!" (loup garou). This movie is a mixed blessing. Most of the script devotes itself to fathoming the mystery, and red herrings abound. Time is also spent on the subplot of a mild flirtation between Janssen and Barbara Rush. She is of the local gentry, and her brother disapproves of Janssen's attentiveness. About 59 minutes into the 73-minute film, the movie shifts gears and the horror elements finally kick in. The local Larry Talbot suffers a peculiar genetic malady that usually can be controlled by drugs. Things get serious one night when the moon is full, and a young girl is brutally murdered. The fright makeup looks as if it came from a shopping mall Halloween shop. Where is Jack Pierce when you need him? Nevertheless, there is some suspense. As the werewolf pounds on the door, Rush barricades herself into the spooky antebellum mansion. There are no silver bullets to report, but there is a handy pistol with sanctified cartridges that have been blessed. Great foresight on someone's part. The '70s cars and clothes add to the modest budget look of the movie. Die-hard fans of horror thrillers should be pleased. Others beware. ;-)

After the late-career high of True Grit, only The Cowboys and The Shootist escaped the curse of half-baked scripts, recycled material, and lackadaisical filmmaking that characterized John Wayne's last half-dozen years in movies.Cahill is no exception, but it's more energetic than The Undefeated and Chisum (likewise nominally directed by Andrew V. McLaglen), with a certain Gothic tinge. Also, the theme of a dedicated professional who lets his job keep him from being part of his children's lives appears to have had some relevance for the producer-star.Marshal Cahill's two sons (Summer of '42's Gary Grimes and the preteen Clay O'Brien) are so unhinged by paternal "negligence" that they get caught up in a twisted bank-robbery scheme with a very bad guy, a veritable bogeyman (George Kennedy).Cahill has to sort his familial crisis and several outlaw crews, with the assistance of a sardonic half-breed scout (Neville Brand) who teases him mightily.--Richard T. 3-0 out of 5 stars An interesting idea for a western that does not pan out
The tagline for the 1973 western "Cahill U.S. Marshal" declares: "Break the law and he's the last man you want to see. And the last you ever will." But we know that because the title character is played by John Wayne, so it really goes without saying that he is as good as it gets. But this is the Duke near the end of his career and while he made a pretty good western the year before with "The Cowboys," he was now just coasting (e.g., "The Train Robbers," "Brannigan") before he actually had some fun making a movie with Katharine Hepburn ("Rooster Cogburn") and found an excellent coda to his legendary acting career with "The Shootist."

Wayne is J.D. Cahill, a tough U.S. marshal who is always on the trail of someone and never at home, which is why his sons Danny (Gary Grimes) and Billy Joe (Clay O'Brien) decide to teach the old man a lesson they go off with Abe Fraser (George Kennedy) and his gang to rob a bank. Actually they have a fairly complicated plan which involves being locked up in jail during the robbery so they have an alibi. Fraser promises no one will get hurt, but of course the sheriff and deputy are gunned down. The younger Cahill hides the loot and if either brother talks, Fraser will kill them both. With the sheriff dead, daddy shows up to track down the bank robbers and takes Danny along with him. They even capture a group of outlaws, who are sentenced to hang for the murders and the robbery.

The pivotal character in the film is actual Danny Cahill, who has to get the hidden loot to Fraser, avoid having four innocent men hung, and try and pray that his father never gets everything to add up. Of course he does, although how the dots get connected is not exactly clear. There was an opportunity for a really good scene here at the big moment, but it just is not there and then Wayne's efforts to make the best of a bad situation kind of gets lost in the film's end game. Basically whatever you think Cahill should do in that situation, he is not going to make you happy, which ever of the two opposing approaches you want him to take.

"Cahill United States Marshall" has an above average number of old familiar faces in supporting roles with Denver Pyle as the boy's caretaker, Royal Dano as a hermit, Jackie Coogan as Charlie the town drunk, and Harry Carey, Jr. as Hank the jailer. Neville Brand has a nice turn as Lightfoot, a half Comanche tracker, but Kennedy is not that memorable as a villain, which is rather surprising. Wayne has more than his fair share of bad lines in this one (e.g., "If a buzzard bites you, he'd never eat meat again"), and the fault here has to be with the script that sets up a fairly interesting situation and then really does not know what to do with it, which is why this becomes a pedestrian John Wayne film.

4-0 out of 5 stars Children need their Fathers
I liked this movie for the simple reason it showed that although John Wayne the father had not been with his boys like he should he suddenly realizes what he has missed out on. They really need him and he needs them. He also teaches them a lesson in a very hard way to be honest and truthful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well-acted, slightly turgid; OK, but nothing too innovative.
Competently made but totally unremarkable, this movie is a pretty fair Western, structurally similar to nearly every other in the last ten years of the Duke's career.

Like some of those others, this one is accused of being preachy. I might dispute that. Subtle it ain't, but really it just has a strong point of view with little room for gray. Besides, are *you* gonna disagree with the Duke?

Duke plays a (surprise) Marshall who learns his kids are falling in with some bad men. Lots of familiar faces are seen as Duke rides to stop the gang and redeem his young'ns. Shots ring out. The End.

The Duke's staunchest fans will of course eat it up. Due to its routine nature I would recommend to most others that they watch it when they haven't seen a Western in a while. Enjoyable enough in a lazy way.

P.S. I realize this next statement will not exactly be a news flash, but nobody has ever been better at sounding tough than the Duke. When his dialogue includes a couple of creative threats, like it does in this film, it's worth seeing at least once for those alone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not good!
This is the only Wayne-western, I ever walked out on before it was finished - so I've actually only seen 3/4 of the movie. That was pretty bad!

3-0 out of 5 stars An okay movie, but lacks something.
Cahill is an okay Wayne film, but just is missing something. The story is about 1 thing and every scene stays in the same area, for example, in "Big Jake" you are at the Mc. Candles ranch, then at a Mexican oil town. So, this movie got kind of boring. The introduction when it was wintertime was what I believe the best part when Wayne encounters outlaws and...uses his double barrel. Chief Lightfoot was funny in the begining when he says, "Just one , i think i know him" I really liked the first parts, but the rest of the movie; I would have saved my money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Two classic westerns for the price of one
"The Outlaw Josey Wales" remains one of Clint Eastwood's most underrated westerns. Behind "Unforgiven", it's it's his best, most emotionally complex western (although "High Plains Drifter" comes in as a close second). The transfer here is very good although I did notice a glitch that appears to be on the original film--a discoloration on the print at the very bottom about an hour in to the film. It's a minor flaw. There's also quite a bit of hair and dust during the montage of fighting between the Union and Confederates. The extras, while not as great as "Unforgiven", are pretty good as well. We get the theatrical trailers, a documentary on the making of the film as well as Eastwood's own introduction (although it doesn't replace the need for a commentary track).

"Pale Rider", Eastwood's return to the western genre after an absence of nearly a decade, isn't quite as original as "Wales". "Pale Rider" borrows from "Shane", "High Noon" and a couple of other classic westerns (including some of Leone's) creating a patchwork of various themes and scenes. The transfer looks very good although some scenes aren't as sharp as they should be. It's not a dual layer disc (we get both widescreen and full screen on each side of the disc). Theatrical trailers are included here but, again, it's sorely missing a commentary track from Eastwood. Four and 1/2 stars for "Wales", 3 for "Pale Rider". ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars not good
i bought this dvd and i regret it completely... it sounds really bad for what i had expected

1-0 out of 5 stars Great book, bad movie
I was excited about seeing this movie because I am a huge Jim Thompson fan. Unfortunately, the people involved in producing this movie were unable to replicate the feel of the novel.

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid performance by Keach, but read the book first.
Keach plays a deputy sheriff in a small town who's everyone's buddy. He's the kind of guy who settles barfights and counsels couples and gets kids cats down out of trees. Thing is, he's also a psychopathic killer who's quickly losing his grip on reality, and his ability to fool the people around him. KILLER INSIDE ME follows him through his rapid decline and ultimate doom. I looked for YEARS to find this movie, because I'm a HUGE fan of the book of the same name by Jim Thompson (who also wrote THE GETAWAY, THE GRIFTERS, and a number of other gritty, suspenseful books that became solid films). Ultimately, I was a little disappointed with this movie. In the book, the main character (it's told in first person from his perspective) is pure evil personified. He knows what he's doing is wrong and doesn't care a bit. In fact, he gets off on it! Hollywood had to make Keach a "poor victim" by pitching him as a nice guy whose terrible childhood catches up with him, and that kind of blew is for me. I mean, we're supposed to be rooting AGAINST this guy! That's the whole irony of the book! That said, Keach's performance is great (the way his eyes glaze over when his evil side comes out is just perfect), as is Susan Tyrell's performance as a scheming hooker. (Tyrell also co-starred with Keach in John Huston's wonderful FAT CITY, a film I HIGHLY recommend.) There aren't ANY extra features on this DVD (no production notes, commentaries, etc), and it's in full-screen, but you can't beat the price! In short, I'd recommend this movie if you're a Keach/Jim Thompson fan, but you should read the book (which I'd just bet you could find right here on this site) first. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best westerns ever made.....
I have seen this western many times on tape and my copy of the movie had started to lose its luster. When I heard it was coming on DVD, I knew I would see the film as Clint Eastwood intended it.

As far as a film is concerned, it is a very good tale of revenge and devotion to friends. Eastwood is great as the title character and the film has some very good supporting performances. The exteriors where the film was shot are beautiful and are just as good on DVD as in reality.

The DVD is a great, inexpensive version of a great Western. The 16:9 widescreen version of the film highlights the colors and tones that were filmed by Eastwood. The color is good as well as the Dolby 5.1 Surround Soundtrack. There is also a French soundtrack (which is very humorous when Eastwood utters the best line of the film, "You going to pull them pistols or whistle Dixie"). The disc also contains trailers to many other Westerns as well as the trailer for Outlaw Josey Wales.

You should not miss this great DVD. The price is right and the movie is one of Eastwood's best. This is one of the better looking westerns that I have in my DVD collection. If you love great westerns and movies about the American Civil War, you will love this DVD!

What can you say about Clint Eastwood's westerns except, great! His movies (acting and directing)changed the whole look and feel of this genre. This is definitely my favorite western, heck it's probably my favorite movie...period. Josey Wales is based on the novel by Forrest Carter, "Gone to Texas". After reading the book Clint knew he had to make the movie and he did an excellent job of capturing the spirit of the novel. The DVD transfer is very good. It was like watching it for the first time when I saw the DVD after the VHS version. This is what westerns are supposed to be so... "are you gonna get this video or whistle Dixie"? BUY IT!

Josie Wales' family was murdered and his home burned by union redlegs, so he joins Bill Fletcher's border raiders on the confederate side of the war and does his share of getting even. When Fletcher turns in his men for money (except Wales) and they are all killed, Wales becomes an outlaw on the run from union authorities. They hunt him clear into Mexico, where things come to a head. Josie Wales single handedly surrounds the entire union army and the Indian nations.

This is a good story, well acted by all concerned, and very well directed by Eastwood, as are all of his films.

5-0 out of 5 stars Josey Wales - Fastest gunslinger in the West!
Clint Eastwood's movie, The Outlaw Josey Wales, is a classic in the Western genre. This movie is one of the best Western movies that I have ever seen.

The story of the movie goes like this. Josey Wales(Clint Eastwood) is a peaceful farmer in Missouri with a family in the middle of the Civil War. One day some Union Soldiers burn down his house (with his son in it) and kidnap his wife. Angry and Furious, Josey Wales joins some confederate guerillas and fights hard. When Confederacy surrenders, Josey Wales refuses and heads west. He travels to Texas and along the way picks up odd group: couple of Native Americans, an Old Grandmother, a beautiful woman and two servants. At the same time they are chased by Union soldiers.

I will not reveal the story further. However, what makes this movie a classic is the depth and dimension to the characters and superb action.

The character of Josey Wales is really complex. He turns from a peaceful farmer to a tobacco chewing, hell raising, gunslinger. However his humane side is seen through his hard attitude at times. He saves a native american girl from couple of scoundrels. He also saves travelers from another group of bandits. At the same time, he is a tobacco spitting hard man. Josey Wales spits on everything, from a scorpio to a union officer. The other characters are not as intensely developed, which is understandable since Josey Wales is the primary focus of the movie.

The action in the movie is just amazing. I will summarize three great scenes which will make you, the reader, want to just watch the movie. In first scene Josey Wales is carrying food and confronted by four soldiers... In another one Josey Wales(and his six-shooter) all by himself is up against 10-15 bandits...In the last one, Josey Wales and his Six-shooter, go toe-to-toe against tens of horse-riding soldiers...

I will leave the action for you to watch.

Also this movie is directed by Eastwood himself. He is as good as a director as he is as an actor.

FYI: This movie is based on the book "Gone to Texas".

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Clint!
If you could only watch two of Clint Eastwood's westerns, "The Outlaw Josey Wales" and "Unforgiven" would by my choices!

Chief Dan George and Clint have a chemistry that adds humor and depth to the main story line of revenge, retribution, and a journey for justice. Sandra Locke, with her doe-eyed innocence, adds a little gentle feminity to the picture.

The movie is exciting, suspenseful and rewarding. No one is better as a wronged-man-evening-the-score than Clint Eastwood and this is one of his most memorable roles. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Moon Of The Wolf

Others beware. ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Horror Express
This film is about an alien killing passengers aboard a train from Peking to Moscow. The main actors are Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing who play British scientists. Lee brings a fossilised apeman aboard the train, unaware that an alien lies dormant within it. It is let loose and kills people, including the train baggage man, a Russian soldier, a woman spy, two scientists (one of whom happened to be Cushing's assistant), a Russian count, and a Russian army patrol, including its leader, played by Telly Savalas. The alien posseses a police inspector and priest to kill. The film ends with the alien (as the priest) dying whilst trying to stop the train from falling over a cliff. The plot is good, showing how the alien absorbing its victim's memories through their eyes (resulting in the victims having white eyes and empty brains) so that it can find a way to go back to its home world in outer space. The film has a haunting whilstling tune.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Aboard!!
HORROR EXPRESS is a wild movie! Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing play rival scientists (Saxon and Wells) who must band together to battle the force that is loose on the trans-siberian express. People are being killed by having their brains emptied of all memories, their eyes turning white. Has the "fossil" that Saxon has brought aboard sprung to life? Can it be stopped before killing everyone? This is no ordinary hunk of cheese! Lee and Cushing are great together (as usual). Telly Savalas is over-the-top but quite enjoyable as the head cossak. Check out the crazy monk who decides to give up on God and serve "satan" (the creature) instead! Talk about a fast switch of sides! This movie is engaging and fun to watch. Sort of a cross between MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, THE CRATE (found on CREEPSHOW by Stephen King), and a really good X-FILES episode. Hop on the train and enjoy...

1-0 out of 5 stars Decent Horror Movie but watch out for the versions
I bought this movie after seeing it on TV. It is a decent little horror flick, BUT the copy I got (cover "Different from the one shown", quoted from the remarks by the seller, for used/new marketplace copies) is from Diamond Entertainment. Packaged attractively, professionally, and with some (useless)special features -- don't be fooled, this is a BAD transfer to DVD. Some scenes inexplicably shimmer, as if you were looking at some gently sloooooshing water. Overall, the image quality is BAD, like it was filmed from a film screen rather than a direct transfer from an original source. Watch out. Don't waste hard earned money on bad copies, unless you are desparate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Early Tribute To Lovecraft!!!
Ok, first off Christopher Lee (crappy Starwars) and Peter Cushing (kool Starwars) known for decades of horror fame, are both in this awsome film, and Diamond Entertainment has recently released it on DVD for only $5.00, so...
...like buy it already.

As for the movie itself, yes it does have two horror icons in possibly there best movie ever, but it also serves as a very kool tribute of sorts to H.P. Lovecraft, the plot is great, I had no problems with the acting, the white eyes were great, and it kept me interested all the way, though be warned action fans, there is no action here, just an evolving tale with character developement, better stick with your Independance Day crap if that ain't your thing, it has aliens and product placement, not to mention a cheesey corprate sound track all of which is void from this awsome movie! :)

WARNING, PLOT LEAK AHEAD!!!!

Ok, so Lee finds this frozen monster which he thinks will explain a vital part of man's past. He loads it up on a train, and the monster escapes, and begins to kill, they kill the monster, ect ect. But...

...the murders continue, and every victum is found with his eyes completely white, and his brain void of any wrinkles or memories. Along the way they discover that the monster was an alien older than mankind itself, and is capable of transfering itself into other living beings. On top of that, it can also absorb all the information out of a human's brain, and know what they know, giving it an upper hand in survival and blending in with everyone on the train.
The aspect I really enjoyed about this is the Kristian Fanatic! The guy strongly resembles the street person who claims the cube at the end of the 1st (and only true) Hell Raiser film. On top of this Lee and Cushing are persistant to prove to him that his beliefs are all a bunch of idiotic superstition.
When they discover that the alien's cut out eye, contains image imprints of the various things it has seen, and that one of them is a view of the planet Earth from space, they instantly call for the Fanatic to have a look in the micro-scope, and as anyone with blind faith would do, he instantly starts rambling about how it is the eye of Satan, and is a vision of him being cast out from Heaven. What makes this even more awsome and darker is the fact that he steals the eye, and is later corned in the same room with the alien, where he watches it kill a lady, then comes out from hiding, and throws himself before it, asking if it were going to kill him too, at which it replys that there is nothing in his head that he would find useful! And just to step it up a tad bit more, the fanatic gives the eye to the alien so no one else will see it, then goes are far to begin worshipping the alien and becomes its servent, and eventually the "temple for its soul"!
Can't beat that for $5.00.

A defininate must for any reader of Lovecraft or Clive Barker!

3-0 out of 5 stars THE ICEMAN COMETH WITH HORROR
A frozen neanderthal man comes alive on a train in Russia in the early 1900s and terrorizes crew and passengers for the durarion of the film. Exceptional cast including Christopher Lee as a pioneering scientist and Telly Savalas in a bizarre role as a westerner turned Russian super-trooper. A rather ingenius wild science plotline with regards to '70s infatuation with alien theories about the origin of Earth, as suggested in such '60s-'70s pulp non-fiction like "Chariots of the Gods". Seems a bit inspired by the 1951 ckassic sci-fi, "The Thing From Another World". ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Family Movie
If your father hasn't accidentally taken you to a movie recently, I highly recommend he takes you to see Ghoulies II. Or, as I like to refer to it Ghoulies vs. Carnies. The movie stars no other than "that guy" and Oates (my father asked if it was Lionel Richie) as a foppish dandy. Throughout the movie, carnival goers are terrorized by a toilet dwelling ghoulie, what appears to be a flying caelacanth, a bukkake rat ghoulie, and a cat ghoulie with tourette's. At no point do the Rat and Cat Ghoulie fight, they've learned to coexist peacefully despite eachother's shortcomings. The effects are a wonderful display from the geniuses at Thunderbirds, and Rankin and Bass. Everyone go find your Boglins. I know you've got one somewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars More B-Movie goodness
Ghoulies 2... what can I saw about ghoulies 2.. well I own this movie! This is the height of good bad movies, this movie stars some people I'm sure you've seen before.. you just don't know they're names.. Like the midget.. I've seen him somewhere.. Thats right! this movie has a midget in it, not only that, but this midget runs the whole horror ride. The movie revolves around a down on they're luck Horror ride entertainers who are going bankrupt, an old man, his grand son, a midget and some other people that arent important, then theres the evil money guy and the love interest.. One night, kids go into the haunted house expecting it to be boring but run into some tiny little demons, they think they are rats. Now.. remember the makers of this movie tried to make it a serious movie.. I had to tell you that before I say this, the demons put on a show for the crowd as the crowd chants "rats! rats!" and then the demons high five each other... that was great!! :) but it's not all fun and games, people start to die and dissapear.. and the old man thinks it's his fault.. lots of story line fallows and some death scenes.. Now.. I found this movie quite entertaining, but if your not a B-Movie fan such as myself, give it a rent first.. this movie is really funny.. but its not supposed to be.. the puppets are pretty cool looking. As I write this review, I see that they've made a 4th one.. god help us all.. Go out and buy/rent it now!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Ghoulies 2
Warning! Before even thinking on purchasing this product read the following. If like me you grew up mostly in the 80's and loved films like these you might be interested to know that this title is cut!!!, and the sound and picture quality are below average at best. This may sound harsh but if you have seen the quality of Fright Night, what was released in the same year and is also a B-Movie you will know what they could have done with this title. Better off buying the video for 2.99.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, the ghoulies are fun little monsters
This is a pretty good movie. Oh, it's on the B-movie side of films but the ghoulies are fun. In this film you actually get more from the actors than in most movies like this. This movie is very similar to Troll ( 1986 ) and it was made by the same exact people. There was a film called Ghoulies that came out before this , but in that movie the ghoulies were actually always in the backround. The first Ghoulies was more about witchcraft and spells, not too much about the title creatures. I hated it. In this one they had a much better budget, the ghoulies have way more screen time, and they used some cool effects to bring these little likable monsters to life. There are plenty shots of the Ghoulies as Puppets, but these puppets are very well done and they give the Ghoulies there own unique personality. There is also some stop-motion animation shots of these creatures as well. The animation models are very well sculped and well animated. The Puppet Ghoulies were created by John Buechler; the stop-motion animation was handled by master David Allen. Great for people who love " little monster " movies. ... Read more

This 1962 special marked the last hurrah of Mr. Magoo, who starred in 43 cartoon shorts, including two Oscar® winners, from the UPA Studio between 1949 and 1959. Magoo appears as Scrooge in a Broadway production of "A Christmas Carol" in this minimally animated hour. The play-within-the-show features forgettable songs by Jules Styne and Bob Merrill: Tiny Tim ("played" by the animated character Gerald McBoing-Boing) sings, oddly, of "razzle berry dressing" and "woofle jelly cake." This retelling of Dickens's holiday standard is much tamer than Richard Williams's Oscar-winning adaptation: the ghosts aren't scary, nor does Magoo confront the specters of Ignorance and Want. Small children who might be frightened by more dramatic versions of the story will enjoy this mild program. And the self-satisfied chuckles and bromides Jim Backus gives Magoo in his lighter moments remain as delightful as ever. This film is suitable for ages 6 and older. --Charles Solomon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Extremely Enjoyable Movie
We make it a tradition in our house to watch this movie on Christmas - and we're Jewish! This is a funny cartoon version of A Christmas Carol, which has Mr. Magoo starring as Scrooge in a theatrical production (in the classic show within a show tradition). The songs are cute (yes, it's a musical) and the story remains intact, although shortened. The Tiny Tim here is the cutest one I've seen in any version of A Christmas Carol - in fact this is one of the best versions out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, THANK YOU!
I humbly wish to thank Good Times Video for re-releasing this holiday treasure--and I write these words well into January. I ordered this DVD in a fit of nostalgia, and as I watched it for the first time since I was a child, I felt tears streaming down my face. I soon realized I hadn't seen this wonderful program since I believed in Santa Claus! I couldn't have been more than 7 or 8 since that last time I saw it, yet it has stuck in my mind and heart ever since--the INCREDIBLE Stine/Merrill score, the wonderfully "early 60s" animation style, the faithful retelling of the Dickens classic, the adorable Tiny Tim, the terrific voice performances by Jim Backus, Jack Cassidy, and many others. "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" might not have been the most sophistically animated Christmas special ever broadcast, but its warm heart and passionate script make it one of the most truly unforgetable (and beautiful) TV experiences of my lifetime. If you have a family with small children, perhaps ages 5 and up, order this program and enjoy it with them. Perhaps they too will have a holiday memory that will last as strongly as mine. Thank you, Good Times Video and Amazon--no make that an uppercase THANK YOU--for blessing me with this cartoon classic that I feared was lost forever. And those songs..........those wonderful, loving, memorable songs!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best "Christmas Carol" available
Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol has been my favorite retelling of the classic Dickens story for years, but I was always embarrassed to admit it, given the simplistic presentation. Finally, I realized that it was that very simplicity, and brevity, that makes this version so appealing. Without benefit of Technicolor storybook pictures or breath-taking effects, these animated characters give an honest, concise telling of the story of Scrooge's redemption.

Any animated feature is only as good as the voices that speak for the characters and this one is chock-full of winners. Jim Backus moves beyond his usual Mr. Magoo voice to find new colors to fit Scrooge's character. The transformation from penny-pinching miser to good-hearted soul via a Scrooge terrified by the visitations is complete. Jack Cassidy is a sympathetic Bob Cratchit and the multi-talented June Foray (of Rocky and Bullwinkle fame) is the Ghost of Christmas Past.

Surprisingly, even in a 52-minute format this version sticks carefully to the Dickens story line and retains all the essential story elements, something that cannot be said for the majority of the filmed versions which feel compelled to "explain" Dickens with extraneous dialogue and scenes. The only addition -- other than the preliminary play-within-a-play set-up that shows Mr. Magoo arriving at the theatre to get ready to go on stage - is the songs. And what delightful songs they are! "The Winter Was Warm" is a beautiful ballad, "I'm All Alone in the World", sung as a duet between the old and young Scooge is a real tear-jerker, and the "La, La" chorus of the rag-pickers, has me laughing just as much now as it did the first time I saw this in the early '60's. What is it about those wide open mouths and visible tonsils in close-up?

Viewing Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol at least once (usually more) each year is part of my Christmas celebration.

5-0 out of 5 stars TRULY A TREAT!!!
This is a super special. It has the warmth of Christmas and for people my age, it has a bunch of memories of the sixties. A delight to watch each year. It aired on NBC back in 1962 at 7:30 - 8:30 on Tuesday night December 18th. This is another classic holiday special that people need in their homes for the holiday. This DVD is a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars OH, MAGOO! YOU'VE DONE IT AGAIN!
Over the years adaptations of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, Charles Dickens' immortal Christmas classic have become a hobby of mine. There have been some great ones but one is surprisingly good and should be a part of the collection of any serious Scrooge-a-phile.

I remember seeing MR. MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL when it debuted on network television in 1962. Though I was a child it made an indelible mark that was never to be forgotten. It ranks right up there with the original animated HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS and is as charming, original and wonderful as it was when I first saw it. It is now a favorite of my children as well.

Additionally, MR. MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL features a soundtrack of songs that are wonderful. Composed by Broadway legends Jule Styne and Bob Merrill of FUNNY GIRL fame, the songs will become some of your favorites for the holiday season. Add to that the vocal talents of the great Jim Backus (Gilligan's Island), Morey Amsterdam (The Dick Van Dyke Show), and Jack Cassidy and June Foray (The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle) and you have an unbeatable and classic holiday triumph.

I watched this movie in the seventies when it came out and it seemed very, very racy. Now its pretty calm stuff with no more nudity than any contemorary flick. Still good, especially if you are an Angie Dickinson fan. The young girls add some heat but the nudity is brief.

1-0 out of 5 stars What the #%*@? Only for low IQ individuals!
Friends! How can anyone give this more than one star?? This movie is a piece of crap!!! Wake up, get a life, and see about finishing high school!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheap exploitative campy trash, BUT....
Yes, this movie is cheap, exploitative campy trash, with a forgettable nonsensical comedy/ violence plot and poor acting by almost every actor/ actress in the movie,

BUT,
the superb performance and presence of Angie Dickenson make this a must-see movie!
Angie was 43 when the movie was made, and the actress playing her "teenage" daughter Billy Jean was 29! I can't find an age for the actress playing Polly, even on IMDB.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's Good Trashy Fun and We get to see What all the....
Hullabaloo was about Angie Dickinson in one of her best nude scenes.

This movie has few redemming social values, other than it's shot pretty good, and it has a weak plot and some beautiful women, including a former supporting actress from "Eight is Enough," Ms. Dickinson, and even "Captain Kirk." But, I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a good period campy movie...

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for Angie fans
Apart from perhaps Dressed to Kill, this is Angie Dickinson's finest moment on film. A satisfying mix of humor, suspense, drama, and touching at moments. Of course, there is also plenty of flesh, including from Angie herself. A classic. ... Read more
