5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating ......they're after the same rainbow end
I love this film. From the first scene when the yellow cab stopped with Holly alighting, having her breakfast in front of Tiffany's to the very last scene when Holly & Paul reconciled and kissed in the rain...

Simply marvellous piece of work. With the flawless performance from Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard. The unique mood of the movie. And my fave song "Moon River". Who can forget the part when Holly sitting by her window plucking the guitar strings and singing...."Moooonnn River...." Great adaption from Truman Cropte's book with many magical touches and refinements. It's about a free-spirit girl Holly's struggle in Life, her fear of Love and commitment, she didn't even think she own her nameless 'cat'. Paul is a struggling writer who actually a 'kept-man' by a rich lady. Fate brought them together, first as neighbours to friends and eventually lovers. They were soul mates who needed each other and are made of each other....they are after the same rainbow end.

The idea was refreshing....esp.doing things that each have never done:- Strolling down New York street in the morning, stealing, visiting the Library and of course Tiffany's. Simply amazing, fantastic and romantic .

The best part about it was both Holly and Paul were practical people with dark secrets and not really perfect human beings and it make the story more realistic but not losing the romantic fairy tale feel.

This film is one of the best in movie history. It touches my heart my soul with scenes with the perfect combo of laughter,sadness,ironic,truth,secrets,romance,life,etc....... Timeless and Unforgettable......

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating¿They are after the same rainbow end!
I love this movie. From the first scene when Holly(Audrey Hepburn) alighted from the yellow cab to have breakfast in front of Tiffany to the very last scene when Holly and Paul(George Peppard) reunited and kissing in the rain.

Mesmerizing film, shine in all departments. Excellent adaptation from Truman Capote's same name novel. Skillful directing by Blake Edwards and flawless performances from both the leads and not forgetting great supporting casts. This role was made for Audrey Hepburn, she was graceful, witty, charismatic and totally awesome. One of her best performance ever!

The story was about a free spirited and helpless Holly Golightly who lived with a nameless 'Cat', didn't want to own anything and afraid of love and commitments. Life pretty much socializing because holly's goal in life to marry one of the richest man under 50. Things take a twist with Paul Varjak moved into the apartment below hers. Paul was a struggling writer who actually a kept man by a rich lady. They became neighbour to friends then soul mate and eventually lovers.

This is not the usual romance story, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is a timeless classic, showed sincerity, sensibility and class.

I also love the song of this movie "Moon River". Who can forget the part when Holly plucking the strings of the guitar and singing it "moonnn----riv---ver"......

This movie touch my heart with memorable characters, song, etc and I've watched it from time to time because each time I watch it, I renewed the feeling. Marvellous vintage classic.Simply divine!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best chick flicks ever
I loved Breakfast at TIffany's. I had read about it from all of the gossip girl books and eventually became curious about the movie. I figured the movie would be good but I didn't expect to fall in love with it as much as I did. It is one of the best romantic comedy, chick flicks I have ever seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for ALL ages!
Because of the fact that I'm only 17 years old, I just got around to watching this movie. I'd always heard about it but I never knew what it was about. And, to be quite honest, I didn't even think about watching it because I thought it was in black and white! (Eh, I didn't know when it was made!)

My dad made me watch it this past weekend and I fell in love with it! Unlike most romantic comedies made today, both main characters are broke. It doesn't follow the mold of: poor/average girl falls for rich guy blah blah blah or the other way around. It was funny (Mickey Rooney's character was HILARIOUS!) and sad (when Holly finds out about Fred) and sappy (the last 20 minutes) all at the same time.

This movie is great for anyone, whether you saw it the first time around or you're a "late viewer" like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars my fav movie!
i love this movie so much!
it is a love story but its not sappy it is so fun to watch

it is not an earlier version of pretty woman at all (as another review stated) audrey hepburn does not play a prostitute really she just has a lot of suitors. Anyway i completely recommend it so worth the $ ... Read more

Available uncut for the first time, the five episodes of DavyCrockett that aired on Walt Disney's "Disneyland" show (1954-55) launchedone of the great pop culture crazes of the '50s. An estimated $300 million worthof Crockett merchandise was sold during the first eight months of the craze, including 10 million "coonskin" caps. Disney didn't spend a lot on theoriginal episodes, but as host Leonard Maltin observes, the colorful locationand matte shots distinguished Davy Crockett from the cheesy-lookingwesterns of the 1950s. The three original episodes were later recut into thetheatrical feature Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier (1955); themore comic adventures from the second season that introduced the flamboyantriverman Mike Fink (Jeffrey York) became Davy Crockett and the RiverPirates (1956). Tall and ruggedly handsome, if somewhat limited as an actor,Fess Parker was effective as the laconic frontiersman. The more experiencedBuddy Ebsen (playing sidekick Georgie Russel) carried many of their scenes.Fifty years later, Davy Crockett remains an engaging example of nationalmyth making. Younger viewers may be surprised to find this straightforward heroretains much of his appeal in an uncertain time. --Charles Solomon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Davy Crockett: Nearly 50 years old and still good.
I was born nearly 20 years too late to enjoy the Crockett Craze, but I still enjoy this DVD set. I have seen the movie versions; seeing them as originally presented, but colorized, was a treat. I find the 2nd Disc better than the first, as I prefer the Davy/Fink relationship as well as the beautiful river scenery. It does seem odd when the show slips from color to an odd black & white, but I feel it just reminds people of how it was originally shown.

I was disappointed in the Fess Parker interview. Perhaps Fess was not up to it the day he talked.

I did enjoy the talk about the Crockett Craze, as I found it fascinating. I did feel it was too short, however.

I also don't understand how come 2 discs were necessary; 1 disc should have held all 5 episodes plus the additional commentaries.

Still, a wonderful DVD.

Now, if only they will releaee "Follow Me Boys" on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic DVD with all five episodes
The Walt Disney Treasures- The Complete Davy Crockett Television Series is a great DVD that is a must have for fans of the show. Telling the adventures of frontiersman Davy Crockett and his sidekick Georgie Russel, the five episodes follow the two men through the Creek Indian War, Davy's trip to Congress, the battle of the Alamo, a keelboat race with Mike Fink, and a showdown with river pirates. All five episodes look great. I never saw the original episodes so after seeing Davy Crockett King of the Wild Frontier for so many years, it was great to see the episodes as they were originally presented. This is a great DVD that tells the story of a larger than life frontier hero.

Fess Parker is the image many people think of when they hear the name Davy Crockett and its for a reason. Parker's performance is truly great as the frontiersman, hunter, adventurer, and Congressman, Davy Crockett. Equally as good is Buddy Ebsen as Georgie Russel, Davy's loyal sidekick. The relationship the two men have is what holds all of these episodes together. The series also starred William Bakewell as Major Norton, Basil Ruysdael as Andrew Jackson, Pat Hogan as Chief Red Stick, Mike Mazurki as Bigfoot Mason, Hans Conreid as Thimblerig, Nick Cravat as Busted Luck, Kenneth Tobey in two roles as Jim Bowie and Jocko, and Jeff York as Mike Fink. The DVD offers all five episodes(Davy Crockett, Indian Fighter, Davy Crockett Goes to Congress, Davy Crockett at the Alamo, Davy Crockett's Keelboat Race, and Davy Crockett and the River Pirates), introductions by Leonard Maltin, an extensive photo gallery, an interview with Fess Parker, and a mini-documentary about the Crockett craze. Fans of this great tv series should have this DVD in their collection. Check out this DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Disneyland USA: One to Really Look Forward To!
Walt Disney Treaures Review 4 of 11

Sorry, no easter eggs on this set. (hidden DVD features)

Disneyland USA, the fourth and final volume of wave 1, is probaly the most important. Here, as with all the others, the DVD is enclosed in a numbered tin, along with a lithograph of the poster for Autopia, and a program booklet with a list of features and a letter from Leonard Maltin, the host of the series. On disc 1, we trace the early years of Disneyland with two complete episodes from the original TV show. Each have an intro by Maltin

The Disneyland Story: The very first episode of the Disneyland Television series, which give clips of whats to come in each section of the Disneyland television series anthology. There is a sneak peek of Disneyland, a peek at the new Davy Crockett series, and a tribute to Mickey featuring two entire cartoons.

Dateline Disneyland: Join your hosts Art Linkletter, Ronald Reagan, and Bob Cummings as they cover live, the inagural day at Disneyland, with the late Reagan covering the dedication. This is the most important of the set, and is a treat for Disneyland film buffs and fans alike.

On disc two, there are two more shows in full color, with intros by Maltin.

Disneyland After Dark: Here, we get to meet amazing stars from the sixties, journey through Disneyland after dark, and meet a couple of the famous "Mouseketeers," including Annete Funicello.

Disneyland 10th Anniversary: This piece has two parts. One showing new attractions at Disneyland, mainly the then in progress Pirates of the Carribean, Haunted Manision and Its a Small World. Then the history of the park, during construction, new attractions and a lot of other juicy stuff.

Finally there are the bonus features.

The Magic Kingdom and the Magic of Television: This documentary gives a short history of the park and the Disneyland TV Show with Leonard Maltin

Gallery: A gallery of photographs and posters, as well as merchandise.

The smallest of the four in wave 1, Disneyland USA could have a little more material. However, that is a small price to pay for the historical broadcasts in this wonderful set. I'll write the reviews for Wave 2 tomorrow. See you then.

Walt Disney Treasures Review 3 of 11

This review tells you where to find the Easter Eggs! (hidden DVD features)

The third Walt Disney Treasure of Wave 1 is Davy Crockett, the Complete Televised Series. Here, there is a showcase of the complete episodes, with Walt's intros on the set. As all of them, this set features a limited numbered tin, a lithograph of the movie poster Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier, and a program booklet with the list of features and a letter from Leonard Maltin, host of the series.

On disc 1, there is an into that both discs share, then the fun begins. Each episode includes an intro by Leonard. Most of the show is in color, but there are parts where color footage could not be located.

Davy Crockett, Indian Fighter: This is the show that started it all. Basically all Davy does in this episode is fight indians, which results in piece with the Creeks at the end.

Davy Crockett Goes to Congress: Here, Davy tends to be more peaceful towards the indians. His whole amazing career begins when moving to find a cabin, buys the land, and fights Bigfoot Mason, who stole a piece of indian land. He gets elected to the state legislature and later to congress. He defends the indians in his brief stint there.

Davy Crockett at the Alamo: Walt admitted he would not kill of his hero here if he didn't know how popular he would be. This is one of the most accuracte portraits of a great moment of American history. (Unlike the crappy new Alamo Disney pumped out)

Well, that's disc one. 3 hours of fun. On disc 2, we get into a couple of legends of Davy.

Davy Crockett's Keelboat Race: The first of two films with Mike Fink, King of the River, Crockett race Fink to keep his furs he hunted for over a year that his partner, Russel, bet they could win while drunk.

Davy Crockett and the River Pirates: The indians are going to hit the warpath if they do not find out who the pirates hiding out in the cave are. Davy, along with Mike Fink, set out to kill the pirates.

EASTER EGG! On the bonus features menu, click on Davy's hat and see a clip from "The Disneyland Story" TV Show about Crockett.

The Davy Crockett Craze: Maltin is joined by Paul Anderson, auther of the book The Davy Crockett Craze, and talk about how successful and amazing the series was.

A Conversation with Fess Parker: At his winery in California, Leonard joins Fess Parker, the actor who played Davy in the series, to talk about his role in the series and the history of it.

Gallery: As with the otheres, here is a gallery of production photos and merchandise.

That is a smaller DVD and didn't take up as much space. I could tell you one thing, the quality is stunning, and the features are amazing. Now onto the final set in Wave 1.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive Disney Entertainment!!
Davy Crockett is sometimes cheesy but it never fails to entertain. It has that Disney magic to it that we dont see anymore and probably never will see again from Disney. This collection of all of Davy's adventures gets its deserving treatment in the Walt Disney Treasures series and it truly is just that. I will admit, I bought this really to just complete my Treasures collection, but when I first saw it I was wowed. I was born a long time after this first aired, yet I could imagine what it would have been like. A great hero of American history coming to the tv screen on Sunday night back in the 60's. Davy Crockett, played by Fess Parker, starred in 5 features, all presented uncut as they were seen then, only now they are in color. That is a good thing though. All of the features have the original Walt Disney introduction from "Frontierland" and it is great to see classic footage restored this beautifully. The episodes included are:
Davy Crockett Indian Fighter
Davy Crockett Goes to Congress
Davy Crockett at the Alamo
Davy Crockett's Keelboat Race
Davy Crockett and the River Pirates

Davy dies in the third installment, only to return in two more adventures. Walt Disney explains why this is, as he was brought back due to the popularity of the character. This, along with the extras make this a great set to own, or at least watch once. Extras include:
"A Conversation with Fess Parker" Leonard Maltin & Fess Parker
"The Davy Crockett Craze" with Leonard Maltin
Easter Egg: "The Ballad of Davy Crockett"
Still Gallery

Normally I dont like watching cowboy/frontier/indian movies but I instantly loved these episodes. It is pure and simple entertainment that you wont see in today's more complicated time. But this is a great set, and also has a cool collectible tin to hold the case. This is a nice set, and although out of print you can find this without paying too much for it. No complaints on this dvd from me though, and I highly recommend it to Disney fans or anyone else in general. All I can say is check it out for yourself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WELLL DOGGIES THEIR ON THE BIG SCREEN
Penelope Spheeris does a GREAT job directing this feature film based on the 1962-71 CBS-TV series. The plot is basically the same as the classic TV sitcom. A family of hillbillies become millionaires overnight when the father, while hunting a rabbit, misses his shot and strikes oil. Jim (Ernest) Varney stars as "JED CLAMPETT". The role made famous by Buddy Ebsen in the TV series. Cloris Leachman is "GRANNY", Lily Tomlin is "JANE HATHAWAY" and Dabney Coleman is "MILBOURNE DRYSDALE" the President of the Commerce Bank of Beverly Hills. This big budget box-office smash also has a cameo by Dolly Parton as herself and a cameo appearance by Buddy Ebsen as private detective "BARNABY JONES" the other role he portrayed about a year after the cancellation of his classic sitcom. TWO THUMBS-UP to one of the best based-on-TV series movie ever filmed.

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice movie that is worth watching!
I liked this movie which I saw before The original Beverly Hillbillies TV show which I had never seen before they started showing reruns on TV Land. I liked everyone but especially Diedrich Bader who was a wonderfully idiotic Jethrow and Jim Varney who though not as good as Buddy Ebson was a good Jed Clampett. Erika Eleniak though not as good as Donna Douglas was really quite good as Elly May but Chloris Leachman and Lily Tomlin though giving decent performances were not nearly as good a Jane Hathaway as Nancy Kulp or as good a Granny as Irene Ryan, but lets face it no one could possibly be as good a Granny as Irene Ryan she's the definitive Granny! one of my favorite scenes in this movie is when Miss Hathaway rang the door bell at the Clampett estate and dopey but loveable Jethro couldn't figure out where the sound was coming from and when Miss Hathaway spoke on the intercom and he thought she was trapped in the wall and was ready to demolish the wall to let her out. By the way I now like the classic TV show too and while I do prefer the TV show the movie is good in it's ownright and is worth watching!

4-0 out of 5 stars Peggy B
I would recommend this movie gets put on dvd. I really enjoyed the movie with Jim Varney. I had started a dvd collection and I have been watching for this to come available on dvd for quite some time. I think it is a really funny remake. And I would recommend this movie to everybody who loves Jim Varney as I do! I would also like to add that Lilly Tomlin and the rest of the cast were excellent in their protrayal of the orginal characters in the tv series. I have to admit I was very surprized as to how well Jim Varney played Jed in this movie. He had to follow Buddy Epson, whom is an excellent actor, as Jim Varney I believe, if had he lived longer, he would of shown us his real tallents.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty funny
lemme give you an example
Jethro Bodine: Jed Clampett has all of the 3 A's. He's A-ttractive, A-vailable and A-billionaire.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as Funny as the TV show but Still Enjoyable!
This movie remake isn't as funny as the TV show episodes but that doesn't mean that I thought the movie was not funny and wasn't good, the movie had some scenes that were very funny and all in all it was a pretty cute movie and I got a lot of enjoyment from watching it and I thought the actors were really good, especially Jim Varney, (Ernest Goes to Camp), Deidrich Bader (The Drew Carrey Show), Chloris Leachman (The Mary Tyler Moore Show), and Erika Eleniak (Baywatch). I had this movie on tape and I would love to have it on DVD so I hope it gets released on DVD. I would also love to see the TV show get on DVD in complete season boxsets. Yes I know the TV show is on DVD but it's only some best of episodes and not complete season DVD boxsets! ... Read more

"All I know is, the Democrats elected a president, and the Republicans cheated 'em out of it!" No, this is not a Michael Moore documentary, but a 1968 Disney musical. The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band is probably the best musical comedy set against the 1888 presidential campaign between Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison. The family band, a bit like American prairie Von Trapps, settles in the Dakota territory. Problem is, Grandpappy Walter Brennan is a diehard Democrat, and Dakota is rife with Republicans, including the suitor (John Davidson at his dimpledest) to his granddaughter (Lesley Ann Warren). The score by the Sherman brothers is not their best, and the "family fare" approach almost killed Disney films during this era. Nice to see old hoofer Buddy Ebsen get to dance a bit, and trivia buffs should note that Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are first linked here--he's one of the kids, she's a featured dancer. --Robert Horton ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dakota, Dakota...Where there's Land for all!!!!!!
This is my favorite movie in the entire world!!! My mom rented it when I was a little girl, and I just adored it. However, as I grew older I was devastated when I was no longer able to find it out on video. I have been surfing the web for months trying to find a copy, but to no avail. You can imagine how ecstatic I was when I found out it was coming out on DVD!! I truly believe this is the best movie ever made. I mean, think about it, it's got your history, politics, family life, and what better love story than Leslie Ann Warren and John Davidson? Not to mentiont he completely adorable Kurt Russell, the energetic dancer and singer Buddy Ebsen, and of course the lovable grandfather Walter Brennan! I absolutely love this movie! Thank you Disney for finally releasing it! You have made my year!

4-0 out of 5 stars Just a wonderful family movie
I spent years trying to find a reasonably priced video of this movie as a gift for my wife. She has loved this movie since she was a little girl. I finally found one and now its coming out on DVD, that is WONDERFUL news. My children loved this movie and even a cynic like myself found this entertaining and the history lesson is an added plus. My biggest joy was watching a young Buddy Ebsen dancing and singing..never get enough of Buddy Ebsen. A must for disney fans and for all families.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Real Disney EVER!!!!
Ok, it is possible that it's because I was introduced at a young age. Maybe that's why I absolutely love this movie! I haven't seen it in probably five or more years, and I can still remember each and every song ('Bout Time, The Campaign Songs, Family Band...) and can sing them without even having to hear bits of it. I could not wait for this movie to come back out of the vault. I would go to different websites just looking for a glimmer of hope. They all said the same thing: Not available at this time. And then, as if by miracle, Amazon.com posted that it was soon to be released. I have ordered it and it should be here any day. If you are a fan of anyone in the cast you are sure to love this movie and will want to add it to your video/dvd library. And I think the fact that they are a family band is very crucial to the plot. I mean, if not they never would have missed the Democratic Convention, Grandpa wouldn't have gotten mad at Republicans and...well. I won't give away anymore of the story. Watch it. You're sure to love it too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strange. . .
Am I the only one who noticed the fact that the family is a band is not remotely pivotal to the plot of this film?

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!
I just found out that Disney released this classic onto DVD. For the past year i had been looking for on the internet, and luckily grabbed the last copy on Ebay. Now, as it has just arrived, I will have to go out and buy it on DVD. It's worth every penny!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Cast in a Potent War Drama
The screenplay for this film was so gritty that the Department of Defense withdrew its production support. Director Robert Aldrich was left to pull military equipment from studio warehouses and the back lot vehicle boneyard. No matter, ATTACK, which was adapted from the stage, constitutes the guts and glory adventures of an infantry platoon during the Battle of the Bulge. Jack Palance stars as the units' respected platoon leader who not only battles the Germans, but also the illogical and destructive orders of his psycotic company commander, played by Eddie Albert. Topping off this cast is the late Lee Marvin as this National Guard battalion's commander. The best and the worst of human nature is portrayed in this film. Action packed scenes are complimented by excellent human drama scenes. ATTACK dared to show the darker side of human behavior in a film where the enemy was not necessarily the greatest threat. Add this film to your war film collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great Jack Palance
Long on several "lost film" lists, "Attack" is at last available on video. There are several reasons to see this film. It is a forerunner of so many grim, realistic movies that treat the subject with intelligence ("Men In War", "Pork Chop Hill", "Platoon", "The Thin Red Line"). It is brilliantly directed (many scenes are almost unbearable in their naked dramatic truth). And it contains several performances that demand attention.

The conviction of Eddie Albert's playing of the cowardly Lieutenant may come as a surprise to those unaware of his talents. Lee Marvin also delivers a solid characterization, as do most of the other supporting players. But the main feature of this film is the astonishing portrayal of Lt. Costa by Jack Palance. The kind of immersion in a role that Palance exhibits here is rare. It is the kind of performance that seems more like "being" than acting. A number of close-ups of Palance's face deliver a frisson of emotional intensity and truth that are rare and wonderful in the cinema of any period. In fact, Palance helps to demonstrate, in this picture, why "war films" should exist as a genre. The condition of war, of combat in particular, serves to foreground, polarize and intensify emotions and moral convictions. It can call into question the very nature of humanity. Just what is the price of a human life? What do we as humans mean to one another? When do concepts like 'bravery' and 'cowardice' cease to have meaning?

"Attack" is a small film, great in its impact.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great plot for its time, but a horrible movie
Having read the reviews posted here, I had to respond. This movie is one of the worst examples of war movies I have ever seen. Yes, the tension is seething between the two antagonists, but the sets are cheap, the dialogue laughable, and the acting hilarious. Jack Palance would do most any movie great credit with his performance, but with the rest of this cast so pathetic, he comes off as completely overacting.

Everything about this movie is Hollywood garbage. Defiant, cruel Germans. Tough, willing Americans. The tactics are laughable, and the lingo is inaccurate.

Yes there is some gore and this is not a rally-round-the-flag, patriotic entertainer, but this is a script that should have stayed on a stage. Perhaps the only saving grace is that while they used U.S. tanks to portray the Germans, they at least had the decency to visually modify them to look somewhat like German vehicles.

Also, the DVD has a skip in the final battle, and the final scene is offset on your screen so you can't view it all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic, Tense, Believable
There is absolutely nothing unbelievable in this film. The black and white photography isn't of the fuzzy, "atmospheric", Film Noir variety- it is the stark, crisp b&w of the combat cameraman. Nor are the details distracting- the equipment and procedures are absolutely accurate for the WWII European theater (for a change those are actual Shermans in the background.) You can cut the tension with a knife, both in the combat scenes and the HQ. Plus, these guys are not all scrubbed and clean shaven- they look like they are bone tired and crawling with tiny livestock.

It is the acting that sticks in your mind. This was probably the best thing Jack Palance ever did as the experienced Lt. that has to sit by as he watches two platoons (including his own) destroyed by the cowardice and incompetence of the company commander. When Palance tells him that he will shove a grenade down his throat and pull the pin if he doesn't support his assault- you believe every word. Eddie Arnold is totally believable as that incompetent Captain (a rich National Guard officer with a powerful father, political connections, a southern accent, and a drinking problem.) Sometimes art does imitate life. Lee Marvin has a most believable role as the Col. who "looks after" Arnold because he wants his father's political help after the war. Marvin knows that Arnold is gutless and incompetent but he doesn't want him on his own efficient staff, nor does he dare kick him upstairs were his superiors can get a good look at him. So Arnold stays in command of a combat unit.... After all, the chances are 100 to 1 that the unit will ever see real combat again- but then the Germans launch a counter offensive. Oh yeah, Buddy Ebsen does a surprisingly good job as the veteran sharpshooter from the backwoods, but then I don't think anyone turned in a bad performance in this film.

This is the most believable war film in terms of combat and politics that I believe has ever been made.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Neglected Classic
Many of the friends with whom I share "Top Ten" lists do not include Attack! among their favorite war films. In fact, few of them have seen it and that's a shame. Perhaps its title (like Zulu's) deters them. Perhaps the cast lacks appeal. Who knows? Perhaps even they don't. In any event, I think this is a brilliant screen adaptation of a play written by Norman Brooks (The Fragile Fox) which focuses on a cowardly officer, Captain Erskine Cooney (Eddie Albert). What is even worse than entrusting him with his command is allowing him to continue with it despite evidence of incompetence. For that, Colonel Bartlett (Lee Marvin) must be blamed. (Of course, he has his self-serving reasons which are revealed in the film.) Brilliantly directed by Robert Aldrich, Albert and the other cast members are first-rate but Jack Palance as Lieutenant Joe Costa is the gravitational center of the compelling narrative. It is almost possible to hear his teeth grinding as he endures Cooney throughout much of the film. Finally....

At first glance, the cast consists of an odd combination which includes Palance, Albert, Marvin, Buddy Ebsen (Sergeant Tolliver), Robert Strauss (Private Bernstein), Richard Jaeckel (Private Snowden), and William Smithers (Lieutenant Woodruff)...most of whom (notably Albert and Marvin) portray characters unlike most with which they are usually identified. Obviously, a major war creates odd "trench fellows" but, thanks to the talents brought to bear by Aldrich and his cast, this film has credibility and authenticity throughout its running time of less than two hours. Tension is inevitable in combat. Our emotional involvement is increased and enhanced by curiosity as to how much damage Cooney's inadequacies will eventually cause, and, whether or not his cowardice will be punished. In many instances, screen adaptations of plays seem talky, "staged," confined, etc. Not so with Attack! It can be fully appreciated without knowing that it is based on The Fragile Fox whose clever title is probably inappropriate title for a film.

Those who share my high regard for Attack! are urged to check out Paths of Glory (1957), Breaker Morant (1980), and Gallipoli (1981). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I didn't remember the show being so funny !
Hilarious is all I can say; every episode is good. I remember watching this show on TV in color and I certainly don't think it was as funny as the episodes on this DVD.
Sure the collection is old and scratchy-looking with no theme song, but was there one when it was origionally shown in black & white? Who knows. I could care less, the DVD is worth every penny I paid for it. I also got Vol 2, which is darn funny as well.
I highly recommend both Vol 1 and Vol 2; you won't be able to help laughing out loud!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do they actually own the rights?
They don't have the original theme song or credits...It makes me wonder if these are pirates or are these the episodes that no one wanted when they were sold one time or what gives?

Its some of the old balck and whites...the transfer is not good...unless you are trying to own all the Hillbillies I would give this a pass...

2-0 out of 5 stars Same as Madacy.....
As With Madacy's release of THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, these two Brentwood DVDs feature re-edited opening and closing credits without the original theme songs. The prints used are watchable, but unremarkable with plenty of dropouts and splices/scratches. For the price, though I give 2 stars for the amount of episodes featured - all early b/w episodes from 1962-1963. ... Read more

My 5 yr old loves watching these funny old shows. She has a copy of the Beverly Hillbillies Vol. 1 distributed by Intercoastal Studios. After watching it constantly, we really needed a change so I thought I would order her a new series of episodes. (We know all of the lines on our old one.) I, thinking logically, ordered the Beverly Hillbillies Vol. 2. Unfortunately, Amazon does not list the episodes in the discriptions, so when the new DVD arrived it had the very same episodes as our Vol. 1. It seems they are distributed by different companies. Now I have to go through the hassle of returning this DVD, and wait to get another one shipped, not to mention the fact we'll be seeing the same 10 episodes until it arrives. ... Read more

What should have been a delightful romp into nostalgia turned into a joke. Leah Thompson, who made a name for herself in "Back To The Future" should have borrowed Doc's time machine. Just too campy for words, the directors were unable to find the innocence that made the show such a hit. What a shame. ... Read more

A callow Southern aristocrat (the charismatically challenged Robert Wagner) acquires character and democratic values in the crucible of combat, via a laboriously complicated script that begins in the middle of things and then loads on explanatory flashbacks like a forklift. On "an island in the Pacific, 1945," the scion of a Tennessee cotton dynasty becomes not only comrade-in-arms but also friend to the sharecroppers he once scorned. Although the jungle island is crawling with Japanese snipers and patrols, the greatest danger comes from U.S. officers who are variously incompetent, "yellow," or--in the case of company commander Broderick Crawford--certifiably insane. Screenwriter Harry Brown wrote the World War II classic A Walk in the Sun 11 years earlier, but the characters here are a dull lot and the dialogue terminally flatfooted. However, director Richard Fleischer blocks his action scenes to take full advantage of the CinemaScope format. --Richard T. Jameson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Between Heaven and Hell
This is a very effective psychological war film with a great performance by Broderick Crawford as the demented commander of a group of loose canons located in an isolated jungle outpost during W.W.II. Robert Wagner is ordered to the post for his transgressions and comes to terms with his own lack of humanity. This film contains one of Hugo Friedhofer's best scores. The stereo score on this VHS recording sounds excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars AHH THE GUNS!
Robert Wagner is so cool as Prinve Valiant! In this movie he fights for his country and does all he can for his wife too.I would like to see it someday.

2-0 out of 5 stars Turgid drama, Inept acting, Wrenched plot!
There is not much to recommend this trivial world war II drama. Broderick Crawford, Buddy Ebsen, and Robert Wagner all confirm their tertiary status in the Hollywood pantheon. The plot is inept and incredible, staggering through bunches of flashbacks. The minor miracle (Rich and arrogant southern playboy/landowner comes of age and learns to love the common man) is insufficiently believable. The battle action is sporadic.

HOWEVER, the DVD presentation is fine. Super-saturated colors come through perfectly, and the definition is great! The DVD quality is the sole reason I give the film 2 stars rather than 1.

May I recommend films such as Patton, Tora Tora Tora, or the Longest Day for fine World War II action!

3-0 out of 5 stars A WWII Coming of Age
This film is about a man whose worldview is limited by his prejudiced, high-class upbringing. The horrors of war will show him the error of his ways and become a better human. The path is indeed a hard one.

The story begins "in medias res" with a demoted sergeant being transferred to a distant post in the Pacific Theatre in WWII. Robert Wagner plays this soldier from the South named Sam Gifford who must now rejoin the rank and file. Under the command of a sadistic captain, Gifford recalls his past as a wealthy landowner and his treatment of his sharecroppers. He then recalls the events of his heroism and demotion. Through all of this, he learns that the people he mistreated back home are just as capable of heroism and that he has been wrong.

Buddy Ebsen, from "The Beverly Hillbillies," plays a part in this film, and I believe he made the movie enjoyable. He wasn't comic relief, but played the stout-hearted sharecropper that truly showed Gifford the error of his ways.

The part of the sadistic captain doesn't seem to fit at first, but watch the whole movie, and his place and his story will make sense.

A fairly good movie, but the flashbacks seem a bit excessive. They are necessary, but still seem a bit much where they are.

3-0 out of 5 stars Complete Season DVD Boxsets Would Be Very Nice!
I didn't grow up watching The Beverly Hillbillies, it aired on TV a few years before I was born and I didn't watch the reruns when I was a little kid but I watched this show for the first time when TV Land started rerunning the episodes and I liked it and I think it is a cute show with some very funny humor. It's great that some episodes are on DVD but even better would be complete season DVD boxsets with the original music included, so please lets get the Beverly Hillbillies on DVD! Irene Ryan was terrific as Granny and so were Buddy Ebsen as Jed Clampett, Donna Douglas as his daughter Ellie May, Max Baer as lunkhead cousin Jethro Bodine, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Educational Entertainment
I remembered the Beverly Hillbillies fondly-but-vaguely. Watching this DVD collection, I came to realize just how fundamentally good and smart that show was. It was brilliant in its conception and execution. Jed Clampett is the show's moral compass; he is a New Testament figure in his fundamental good-will toward all, trusting, forgiving, and absolutely lacking in any sort of irony or sarcasm. Granny is the ultimate Old Testament fiesty matriarch, whose superstitious beliefs are based on mistrust, fear, and retribution. Ellie May is the Wood Nymph, who most closely resembles Jed in attitude (by way of her heart, more than the moral thinking of Jed). Lastly, Jethro is the the Modern Man, who is driven by ambition, with few thoughts of consequence, who sides with Granny in schemes, tempered by his naive/shallow beliefs in Good Results. As a foursome, they confound the world that confounds them.

Mr. Drysdale and Miss Hatheway provide bookends to the Clampett clan, in the roles of Id and Super Ego, each attempting to direct and/or prevent the family's actions at cross-purposes to the other.

Everything about the show is brilliant, sweet, and silly, with a massive moral lesson hidden in the guise of a goofball comedy.

Buy this DVD and learn what you missed in Sunday School.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent DVD, with some flaws
20 episodes of the greatest show of all time, what more could you ask for? Well, the theme song would be nice, but it's not a huge deal. Who evere chose these episodes clearly knew what they were doing, "The Gient Jackrabbit" Could very well be the funniest thing I've ever seen. I have never gotten the "Buddy Ebsen Bio" to work, but that could very well be my DVD player.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage
This is a waste of money. A poor collection of odd, forgotten episodes with no original music. The producers of this "classic collection" should be tarred, feathered, and pilloried.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where`s Flatt and Scruggs
It`s like meeting old friends again. When this show first ran here in the U.K it was the highlight of my weeks viewing. To show how much Jed and his family are remembered when I mentioned to a friend I had ordered this set his first words were "Weeeellll Doggy". Now the down side. The quality is`nt what you would normally expect from D V D but I suppose to re-master all these episodes would be quite expensive. The biggest mistake is where`s the theme gone. When they all appear at the end of each episode in the doorway you expect to hear. "Come and listen to my story `bout a man named Jed". This was one of the most famous themes on T.V. Its like watching Rawhide without Frankie Laine. ... Read more
