Boone's determination to win is only outmatched by his drive for racial harmony within the team and coaching staff. By forcing his players to interact he creates bonds and friendships. Throughout all of this he knows he must win or his tenure as head coach will be short lived. He must not only battle the racial tension in the team, but in the town as well. Only his sheer will can guide his team to the promised land. The movie is an outstanding piece of cinema. It adresses a social issue with raw emotional power. It teaches a lesson without screaming it in your face. The acting is without a doubt full of some of the best performances of the year to not have been recognized by Oscar and the likes. While Denzel Washington and Will Patton are phenomenal the show is stolen by the members of the team. Watch this film and you will get the point. An emotional five star film worth watching again and again.
However, once it started, I was captivated by it. The movie is made even better based on the fact it is based on a true story. The jist of it is this... Herman Boone, played by Denzel Wahsinton perfectly, takes over as new head coach at a high school that has been desegregated. Naturally, the town has mixed reactions. We watch as Boone, uses tactics that neither the players, the parents, the townsfolk or even his assistant coaches like to force the players to not only become a team but also respect each other as people. We watch as friendships form, and as a team forms. Eventually we watch as the winning football team, and essentially Boone brings the town together. This movie brings something to the table for everyone. I laughed, I cried, I even cheered during the games. A must see!

Amazon.com Set in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1971, the fact-based story begins with the integration of black and white students at T. C. Williams High School. This effort to improve race relations is most keenly felt on the school's football team, the Titans, and bigoted tempers flare when a black head coach (Washington) is appointed and his victorious predecessor (Will Patton) reluctantly stays on as his assistant. It's affirmative action at its most potentially volatile, complicated by the mandate that the coach will be fired if he loses a single game in the Titans' 13-game season. The players represent a hotbed of racial tension, but as the team struggles toward unity and gridiron glory, Remember the Titans builds on several subplots and character dynamics to become an inspirational drama of Rocky-like proportions. Yakin--whose debut, Fresh, was one of the best independent films of the 1990s--understands the value of connecting small scenes to form a rich climactic payoff. Likewise, Washington provides a solid dramatic foundation (his coach is obsessively harsh, but for all the right reasons) while giving his younger co-stars ample time in the spotlight. The result is a film that achieves what it celebrates: an enriching sense of unity that's unquestionably genuine. (Ages 9 and older) --Jeff Shannon Reviews (209)

Best scenes, Bernadine (Angela Bassett) destroying her ungrateful husband's material possessions, then meeting the surprise man of her dreams. People refer to this as a man-bashing story, but I'd like to point out there were actually two men who revealed themselves as strong, loyal, and moral characters in the movie. Written by Terry McMillan, directed by Forest Whitaker, and acted by a strong ensemble cast - notably Angela Bassett (who can do no wrong in film), Loretta Devine, and Gregory Hines. Waiting to Exhale was the precursor to Soul Food, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Eve's Bayou, Love Jones and more films featuring a Black, ensemble cast. Hollywood, are you listening? There is a market for these movies!

She lives with her widowed father (Hedaya) and the only pebble under her perfectly manicured feet is her ex step-brother Josh (Rudd). Cher loves to play matchmaker and can't resist the challenge when she meets the new girl in school, Ty, who isn't exactly 'popular' material at first glance. Having taken her under her wing and given her a complete makeover, Cher then tries to match her up with various boys. This is alright until Ty takes a fancy to Josh and then Cher suddenly realises that she has feelings for him herself - but who will get the man? Silverstone is absolutely fantastic in this film. She handles the difficult role SO well and you can't help but really like Cher and want her to get the man of her dreams for all her obvious flaws. Add a brilliant combination of comedy, both oneliners and visual, and the fact that it's literally such a colourful movie and you've got yourself a film that will leave you smiling for ages afterwards.
Alicia Silverstone ("Excess Baggage"; "Batman & Robin") stars as Cher Horowitz, a young, hip teen residing with her lawyer father (Dan Hedaya) in Beverly Hills. Along with best friend Dionne (Stacey Dash of "Mo' Money"), the girls are the doers of social good deeds at their high school. Whether it is trying to play matchmaker for two lonely teachers (playwright Wallace Shawn and Twink Caplan, who is also an executive producer of the film) or doing a serious make over for Tai (Brittany Murphy) a new, dowdy student from the east coast, Cher is the toast of the school among her peers. However, playing matchmaker for others has made Cher realized that she too needs to find someone special in her life. Pestered by her ex-stepbrother Josh (Paul Rudd) in doping deeds that benefits others and not only herself, Cher discovers that what she truly needs is a spiritual makeover that will allow her to attain happiness and respect. Yet, she wonders why it bothers her so much on what Josh is thinking? As the story progresses, we discover that opposites attract and Cher has realized how "clueless" she was while looking for Mr. Right. Wonderfully directed and casted,"Clueless" features some memorable performance by Julie Brown (as Ms. Stoger, the physical education instructor), Donald Faison (as Dionne's boyfriend Murray) and Justin Walker, as Christian Stovitz. Walker who plays his role with comedic sensibility is great and witty as the boy Cher has the hots for, although she has little knowledge about his background. "Clueless" is one of the best films released in the 1990's due to his smart use of popular lexicon, icons, and attitudes that can be attributed to most American teenagers. This is Silverstone's greatest performance to date, seeing that most of her later works did not go well with critics or filmgoers. Although a television series based on the film was launched in 1997, it couldn't capture the charm, wit, and performances of this film. "Clueless" is a classic teenage film you can watch over and over again. It's destined to become a cult classic
What sets it apart from other dumb tripe out there and makes it enjoyable for even the most weary of grown-ups is its great cast, unbelievably witty writing, and irresistable storylines that you can't help but get caught up in. The whole cast is great, but Alicia Silverstone is unforgettable. It is a pinnacle leading role for actresses in teen movies. She simply sparkles from scene one.An who could ever forget the sets and costumes?? Simply, a classic in the genre, and one of the best comedies of the nineties.A weekend popcorn movie to curl up in bed with that also has wit and charisma and intelligence to boot. Not to mention, its still not old after the fifth billion time. ... Cocky and not-so-bright Britney Murphy (Just Married, 8-Mile) plays a aristocratic well to do teen who suddenly looses what she ahs to find out she needs to get a real job. In her attempt she is befriended by a mother played by Heather Locklear (Looney Toons Back In Action, The First Wives Club) who needs a caretaker - babysitter for her young daughter played by Dakota Fanning (I Am Sam, The Cat In The Hat). The two teach each other a valuable lesson about life. One - Brittany needs to lean how to grow up, the other - Dakota - needs how to learn to have fun. The two are forced to tolerate each other in order to appease the mother. However, in the process of hating each other, they learn a lesion in family friendship and that people are not what they seem to be on the outside. That's the warm fuzzy! Really nice heart - it does get a little slow in parts, but the chemistry of little Dakota with everyone on screen is amazing. You can't help not liking her even after she plays this temperamental little brat. As far as the theatrical experience, a good film for the teens and young adults but it is not really for the really young or middle aged crowd - it does have a syrupy side that may give some a tooth ache. This would be a great DVD to have for the family. Let me know what you think. (11-12-03)

This movie could have been something much more, had they tried to make you want to watch it for more than what it is, just people stealing cars. I doubt many people will see this film that live outside of New Jersey, but it is an accurate portrayal of life in Newark, so for that I commend it. But if you want to see a great movie, I suggest looking elsewhere. If you are just in the mood to watch cars being stolen and enjoy the action, then this movie might be for you.

The story is very famlish, never the less, clever. Jason Shepard (TV's Malcolm in the Middle star Frankie Muniz) is a liar, straight off the bat. He lies constainly about everything, espeacialy with the whole homework excuse "My dog ate it" or "My dad is in the hospital (sniff)". But this time, his assignment was stolen...for real. While trying to get to class, he is acidentally run over (don't worry, parents. The scene is put on a cartoonish note) by a big-shot movie producer, Marty Wolf (Paul Giamatti), who has been known to be a huge jerk to people. Marty offers Jason a ride to school. While the trip, Jason tell Marty about his paper homework due, title "Big Fat Liar", a story about a compulsive liar, who gets bigger each time he lies. While being dropped off, Jason forgets his paper and Marty takes it. A few months later, Jason and his best friend, Kaylee (Nickelodeon's Amanda Byrnes) go to the movies and see a trailer for a movie called "Big Fat Liar", which immediately makes Jason furious. While Jason's parents are gone on vacation fo the summer, Jason and Kaylee take a trip to Los Angeles to find Wolf and get down to business. Along the way, they befriend a actor-turned-limo driver, named Frank (Donald Adeosun Faison) and Marty's partner at the studio, Monty Kirkham (Amanda Detmer). While Jason and Kaylee find shelter at Universal Studio's Prop shop, Jason Persues in finding Marty and getting either revenge or an appology. During a rude encounter with Marty, Jason decides Vengence...all the way. He and Kaylee form together all the people Wolf has been mean to and plot a payback to ge Marty out of Business, for good. One thing I liked about this movie was how it took place at Universal Studios Hollywood 75% of the time, aside from the obious (Monty, in one scene, is walking and talking on her cell phone in front of the Bates Motel House) there is the scene in the prop shop, were the kids shack up, where pieces of recent Universal films, such as "The Grinch", are left laying around, along with the DeLorean from "Back to the Future" shown everywhere and the constant showing of the Universal Backlot Tour trams driving by (I love how in one scene, Jason and Kaylee leap off a tram to see something: keep in mind that you could never do that in real life!). BIG FAT LIAR is a great family film, but better for kids. And it's the thing Universal fans, like me, been waiting for.
Good Job Universal!
After Jason Shepherd notices a Hollywood director (he had an accident with) has stolen his English paper and turned it into a successful movie script, he (played by Muniz) sets out on a hilarious adventure to get credit for his work. The best part about the movie is I truly believe something like this has probably happened before...only the person with the stolen screenplay probably did not have the brain power of Muniz and Bynes! The movie is good clean fun for the whole family. Amanda Bynes knows how to play to the camera, as does just about everyone involved with this movie. Paul Giamatti's "Hungry Like The Wolf Dance" as a blue-colored moron was one of the funniest scenes in a PG movie in a while. Buy it, watch it, laugh... GB P.S. If you go to the video store and it is a choice between Big Fat Liar or Lost In Translation, trust me - go with Big Fat Liar. ... Read more | |

Intellectually, the film explores the uses of art -- those who use it to exploit and titillate versus those who use it to investigate and heal -- while emotionally the movie explores trauma in a madcap way that is as funny as it is disturbing. There is an oddness to this film that is a mark of a true artist -- we are witnessing an original and difficult-to-assimilate voice here, grappling with profound questions in a way we are not used to. There's no grandiose narcissism here, announcing its brilliance and importance at every turn -- only the mind's and heart's turnings of that rarity in film -- a director who is unconcerned with fame, but deeply concerned with morality and truth. The film is epic but intimate, deeply sad and profoundly celebratory. The reason it wasn't released, and the reason that shallow thinkers find the movie unsuccessful, is that it does what Wallace Stevens says poetry should do: it "almost resists the intelligence successfully."
In the VHS the closest we get to fishing is looking into the water; furthermore, Hiassen can never be faifthfully translated to the screen; there is too much complexity, irony, and subtletyto bring it off. One reviewer mentioned the screenplayhad recieved n award. Only in Hollywood, as the cliche goes. I wonder what Hiassen thought when he heard that this "screenplay" which is technically a screenplay detached from the book completely, and therefore to be correct should not have used the titleof the book at all. Two more extremely aggravating points in this movie. The two guys dreaming up a screenplay was funny at first, but it really got tedious after the third vignette. Mr. North, the sartorially splindid detective makes a good point at the end, a very intriguing point, which I will not divulge, which indicates more than meets the eye in the killing of two creeps, emphasized by worried looks from the young lady. This was left handging; very unsatisfactory. Perhaps Mr. North could not let a last homage to Law and Order pass without this horrid movie ending.
This is the worst movie w/such quality actors I've ever seen. Steve Busceni is so under utilized its a joke. Then the parts he's in the movie, they make him act gay. I mean homosexual gay. Absolutely horrible. After you see the first "action" sequence at the movie version of McDonalds, you will wish you never started the movie (it's clear right from the beginning). There is no drama, character developement is weak at best, other then the super. The two aspiring movie writers should have just been cut out of the whole movie, they played no major part in the story, they were not funny, and they wore the same clothes every day!!!!! Elizabeth Hurley, Dennis Leary, and Steve Busceni read the script, sounded good, and the director and producer screwed the whole thing up. DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE. You'll be sorry, you've been warned.
