5-0 out of 5 stars Mystery and Suspense Without Sherlock Holmes
One of the finest suspense movies that I have seen in long time. Avery has had the unfortunate luck to have his sister kidnapped and ransomed for $2,000,000. Unfortunately, neither he nor his father have that kind of money. So he and his friends kidnap retired mob boss Charlie Bartolucci (expertly played by Christopher Walken) so that he can use his contacts to find the girl and pay the ransom. Shocked, angered, and ultimately amused by his novice captors, Bartolucci agrees to help with Avery's sister. While doing so, one of his contacts lets him know that the kidnapping had help from an inside party. Slyly playing the friends against each other with this information, the tension slowly continues to boil until the movie's explosive climax. With an underrated but excellent supporting cast (including Jay Mohr, Sean Patrick Flanery, and Denis Leary), this movie keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time because you're never sure who to trust. Perhaps the most brilliant aspect of Josh McKinney's script is the unending depth of the characters. Denis Leary's role is a perfect example: as Bartolucci's lieutenaant he posesses an expected viciousness and sarcasm. However, he allows a good soul to shine through at odd moments: like when he shows up to question a friend of the boys and instead protects her from the forced advances of her stepfather. Filled with tension that is only heightened by the film's biting humor and its complex characters, this is a great flick to watch with a bunch of friends so you can all guess whodunnit and be shocked by the ending.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Funny and Dark
"Suicide Kings" is a very good movie with a great ensemble cast. Different viewers will chose their particular favorites, but if you are an admirer of Christopher Walken you have all the reason you need to see this film. Denis Leary is the second best aspect of this film, and that is largely due to his smaller, but critical role. His defensive riffs on justifying his $1500.00 Stingray boots that others acknowledge as, "fish-boots", is quality stand up material.

Four prep-school, rich kid, lifelong friends, and a fifth that they mislead as only friends can do, decide they need to kidnap Christopher Walken for his diplomatic skills. His character is a modern version of Don Corleone so a decision to detain him against his will is poor judgment at best and lethal at worst. When Walken contacts his attorney to unravel this mess his first comments include, "don't send your kids to boarding school". The unwitting friend Ira, as played by Johnny Galecki is a riot as he frets over his parents newly finished floors and marked liquor labels, while, "The Godfather", is duct-taped to his father's favorite chair.

Christopher Walken is an amazing actor that deserves more recognition than he has been given. If there is an actor who can play a more sinister, purely evil character, without raising his voice, I have never seen him. This role is comparable to the part he played in another film when he introduced himself as the Anti-Christ. As brilliant a, "Player", as his character is, there is also a pair of low level goons that are the mob's equivalent of Laurel and Hardy.

The R rating is appropriate for the violence, and language that may or may not offend some viewers. There are no, "adult situations".

5-0 out of 5 stars A movie to watch time after time
I don't exactally know what made me watch this movie. I think my dad picked it up from some $5 bin and one day while bored out of my mind I picked it up a random movie and decided to watch it. But I am glad that I watched it for sure. It is a movie that I have literally watched twice in the last week (well that could be due to the fact that I have nothing better to do...) and cracked up thru both times. and everytime i watch this movie knowing the ending I am still questioning who the inside player is and how everything is going to end. basically it is in my top 5 favorite movies of all time and it is a movie tht i recommend to everyone who likes dar comedies and doesnt mind blood and cussing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christopher Walken the Great.
Great script, great directing, great acting, great movie. it is a blend of crime drama and thin satire. it combines very smoothly the abilities of great actors (Christopher Walken)with the exuberance of young prospects. and Dennis Leary was born for his role in this motion picture.
this is a must have for any christopher walken fan, and movie lovers in general. you will not be dissapointed, especially with the deleted scenes and alternate endings extras. enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1 of my favs

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius black comedy / Satire
This film personifies high school, classic 80's teen angst cult film. Right down to the cliques in high school. The one difference between Westburg High & my high school is nobody was killing the popular kids off. Christian Slater plays Jason Dean (JD) a sociopath new kid in school who is fed up with cliques and the everday sheep students trying to fit in with the cool kids. Winona Ryder plays Veronica an individual but hangs with the Heathers to make life in HS easier. She notices JD's individuality and they start dating. Everythings is great until he wants to kill off the Heather girls & popular students. So he manipulates Veronica to help him kill off her simple minded friends & make it look like suicides. At first she is repulsed but can't stand her friends so she gives in. If you look deeper into this film beyond the quirky comedy the message is scary the desensitized unemotional oblivious parents, the quirky teacher who still wants to be a student, the song "teenage suicide don't do it" set to a pop upbeat melody. It really reflects high school a bit exaggerated but still relatable. A very dark film about the lengths kids will go to fit in and be liked. One kids twisted view of how the world should be. The ending is great the little speech Christian Slater gives to Wynona Ryder after attempting to blow up the school listen to it makes you think about what he says long after viewing the film. One of my favorite films and essential to collection, a must see to anyone grew up in 80's cinema.

5-0 out of 5 stars Darkly wonderful and peculiar gem of the 80s
This dark comedy is laced with satire, humor, and wit, much like many of my favorite novels. Winona Ryder and Christian Slater make the ideal duo - until she realizes she needs "cool guys like him out of her life."

Winona, here as Veronica Sawyer, was formerly the best gal pal of dorky yet insanely innocent and kind Betty Finn (both character names are derived from the Archie comic strip). Now, she's taken it up with three girls by the name of Heather. Duke and Chandler may or may not be genuinely evil, while McNamara is just plain pathetically insecure. The thing is, Veronica hates her new so-called friends. It's just their "job to be popular and s***," that's all.

Christian Slater, to my utter dismay, seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth since this booming debut. Here, his performance mimicks that of witty and humorous Jack Nicolson.

"Greetings and salutations." :)

J.D. and Veronica make the ideal couple. Both are witty, bright, and loathe the existence of the high school world. Only J.D. is insanely violent as well, and his actions are bringing about vast repercussions for not only himself, but for Veronica as well. And Veronica is beginning to wise up and realize that J.D., despite his charms and wit, isn't worth all his trouble(s) and excess baggage. Besides, he's got an unhealthy fascination with guns.

After the demise of the leading Heather - their doing through liquid bleach - a second Heather takes her place as leader, even more aggressive and bratty than her predecessor.

Veronica ponders what to do over old and new friendships and accidental deaths in her diary. She and hunky J.D. manage to kill a Heather and two dim-witted jocks but escape suspicion for murder because they leave behind suicide notes. Veronica can perfectly imitate handwriting styles, as we find out during the first 5 minutes of the film when the three Heathers coerce her into writing a love note to high school outcast Martha "Dumptruck" Dunstock and signing a popular jock's signature to it. She approaches him at his lunch table and uproarious laughter ensues.

Teenage suicide seems to be all the rage in the world of Westerburg High, despite the popularity of fictional band Big Fun's hit single, "Teenage Suicide (Don't Do It)." Even though Veronica has left J.D. behind, he still has conjured up his own evil plans concerning the future of Westerburg. And the Heather in control is abusing her privileges - Veronica knows she wants out.

HEATHERS is so much more than a screwball comedy. Since its release, no other film has managed to live up to the same wit and dark humor and charm found throughout, making this film a genuine benchmark in the history of movies - and the 80s, for that matter. HEATHERS takes one glimpse at the work of ultra-cool 80s director/writer John Hughes and laughs in his face, making his Molly Ringwald flicks look like garbage in comparison.

Could this be why Winona is still alive in Hollywood and Molly is not?

Perhaps.

5-0 out of 5 stars The End of John Hughes Teen Dramas...
Don't get me wrong - Love John Hughes. But this is not Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles or even the Breakfast Club. If you're looking for the sugary sweetness of those happy endings - Heathers isn't for you. There are no scenes that are going to make you overly nostalgic for being a teen in this dark comedy.
The 3 Heathers rule the school of Westerburg High and Heather Chandler (#1) is the dominant red wearing queen. Veronica Sawyer (Ryder) her best friend is dressed mainly in blue - for truth? She is our perspective for the most part and her diary entries (where she pours out all her true feelings) are perfect. Heather Duke - dressed in green for envy of Heather Chandler's power. And Heather MacNamara dressed in yellow for her fear of - everything. They walk the halls of Westerburg secure in their popularity and the fear the instill in their peers.
Enter Jason Dean (Slater) the "black horse in the running". He attracts Veronica mainly because he's an outsider too cool for anyone else and she's sick of the Heathers. He is seen in black for a very good reason. He is ultimately the protagonist for the killings (which are all too believable)
The movie is great, showing without remorse the absolute solitude that HS can be. The stereotypes, while exaggerated are suspiciously close to the truth. Arrogent teachers, clueless parents, heartless peers... Ahhh High School.
Heathers is also has great quotes. BVS is the only other thing I can think of that perfected it's own slang so well. It makes the movie timeless.

"F*** me gently with a chainsaw. Do I look like mother Theresa?" - Heather C.
"I just killed my bestfriend." - Veronica "And your worst enemy." - JD "Same difference." - Veronica
"Did you have a brain-tumer for breakfast?" Heather C.

5-0 out of 5 stars DARK AND OFTEN BIZARRE, BUT DAZZLING IN EVERY WAY
What a superbly crafted black comedy with an insider's view of highschool powerplays, teenage angst, clueless parents, twerpy faculty, etc etc. Could have easily gone down the beaten path and become one of the countless teen movies, but this is undoubtedly an under-rated gem!

As some reviewers lament, be prepared for parts that are dark and disturbing, but the film is also hilarious for the most part, and whatever your emotional reaction, the dialogue is never off-target. In fact the film's script and visual style are so clever that laughing at murder does not seem much of a guilty pleasure.

For all the talk of suicide, the underlying theme couches a universal and heartening meaning: that all people are created equal, the "in crowd" as well as the nerds.

You need your sense of humor in the right place, and if you've got it there, this movie comes highly recommended from me!

4-0 out of 5 stars You will hate life more than life hates you...
"Our love is God... let's go get a slushie."

This film is actually smarter than it lets on. It knows its subject matter so well that you can't help but marvel at the relevance. The look, fashion and soundtrack might be dated, but the point sure isn't. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Love/Hate Relationship With This Movie
Perhaps the movie looked better than it was. Maybe the book was better than the film. It could be that there was just something missing.

All told, I wanted to like this film, a lot. All of the pieces are there for a good movie: compelling story line, sympathetic characters, interesting twists. For some reason, however, I was left feeling like something was missing. I just wanted more and I didn't get it.

The movie is not a feel good movie or a preachy movie (although it tries to do so with its drug message), but it does have some great things going for it. The music was excellent, Robert Downey Jr. is very good, and some of the cinematography (especially the last few minutes of the film) was inspired.

Still, you can't overlook some of the problems. The acting is simply uneven. Andrew McCarthy looks as though he is interviewing for a stuffy banking position. The relationship between Julian and his father is never really played out. Rip's henchman looks like a California surfer with an attitude problem, not a bouncer type that is out to do no good. The movie all but says that if you are 18, white, and live in Beverly Hills, your main entertainment venue is snorting cocaine.

For me, this film was truly a love/hate relationship. I simply wanted more to love and less to hate.

5-0 out of 5 stars I don't care what the others say!
I've both read this book and seen this movie. They're right who say it doesn't follow the book in "plot" (but then again if you read the book you'd realize it was one of those good books like "Catcher in the Rye" without a real "plot"- which wouldn't make too good a movie now would it?). This is a moving movie and the acting is brilliant most of the time, especially from Robert Downey Jr. He plays the part of the hopeless junky so well that it's almost eerie sometimes. Jamie Gertz did a good job playing the hypocritical yet caring friend who makes it her mission in life to protect the Downey Jr. character. And Andrew McCarthy puts off just the right mixture of depth of feeling and the detachment of an outsider who's been away for too long. The casting was great and they did what they could to make this a good movie, and succeeded. It was real, scary, intelligent, and suspensful. Watch it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Re: Downeys finest hour
Two words apply to this movie: Robert Downey. He gives an incredible performance as Julian a drug addicted pal of two old high school friends. Its astonishing to me that he wasnt at least nominated for an Academy Award. Downeys performance is beyond convincing, it will literally send chills down your spine.

See it for Robert Downey, it is truly his finest hour.

5-0 out of 5 stars To live and die in LA
Ok, so it might be someone else's film title, but this is one of the essential 80s brat flicks and concerns the said heading in every aspect. Let's get the rubbish out of the way. The plot is twiddled with until it barely resembles the book. A lot of Ellis' humour gets lost in translation. Blair is a brunette unlike her published blonde doppelganger. Hmmm.
That said, Less Than Zero is probably the one film that epitomises the 80s like no other for me. The opening shots, with the Bangles brilliant cover of 'Hazy Shade...' clanging in the background, still invites chills.
Others have written the plot succintly, so I will say that if you want a cold, clinical, no exit look at being a rich, bored teen in LA, search no further. Blair (Jamie Gertz)is deliciously confused, drugged and flakey, and Clay, the solid rock in the middle of his friends' breakdowns is perfectly cast in a youthful Andrew McCarthy. Top honours go to Robert Downey Jnr, spookily playing out his own future as the drug addled Julian with frenetic highs and lows, insincere to himself and broken to his mates, and James Spader as the vile pimp and dealer Rip.
Wonderfully photographed by Edward Lachman, it's simultaneously lush and sparse. If the end scenes don't get you sobbing into a pillow, then take that stone out of your chest and get a heart. Less Than Zero has been unfairly mauled by many, but it stands up today as a film with much more going for it than you may think. For starters, it may be one of the only teen flicks that doesn't make you howl/cringe because of ropey dialogue and cheeseball disco moments. Its 'drugs message' is played out minus politics and simply invites you take a journey with the characters. Death, it seems to say, is inevitable for everyone, some just go a little faster.
Less Than Zero is sexy, frank and troubled. There could not have been a better antithesis to the whizz bang makeover! of other 80s teen films (John Hughes take note!). Helped by a storming soundtrack, this one should be in your collection somewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars totally different than the book
I read the book 1st then saw the movie and they were totally different. Really only the character's names were the same. The book is way more detailed (obviously) and graffic and told by Clay's point of view only. I think I would have really liked the movie if I had not read the book 1st. The book is better but way worse so if you can't take graffic nature stick with the movie. The performance of the actors were great though and in itself it was a good movie. Below are major examples of the differences between the two (spoilers). (...)In the book:
The story focuses entirely on Clay not the story of 3 friends like the movie. You don't even "see" Julian in the book until much later and he is already established as a prostitute. He has no reconciliation scene with his dad and he doesn't die. He doesn't ask for $50,000 but rather money for an abortion and when he goes to get him his money back he makes him watch him prostitute for it. Rip is a dealer but not the pimp. Clay sits and watches Julian while he is prostituting himself for 5 hours - not just busts in and save him like the movie.

Clay does just as much drugs as everyone else and has sex with another guy and other women besides blair.

More characters are outlined and it is more detailed in 80's culture and music.

They watch a snuff movie. They tie up and sexaully assault a preteen and eventhough clay doesn't watch or condone it he doesn't stop it and just leaves.

There is no great love affair between clay and blair like in movie - he doesn't really care for her or love her anymore.

People shoot heroine.

They find a dead body and gawk at it and dont do anything about it. ... Read more

This dark comedy from 1989 was a good showcase for Winona Ryder, playing a high school girl brought into a clique of bitchy classmates (all named Heather), and Christian Slater, doing his early Jack Nicholson thing. While Ryder's character muddles over the consequences of giving up one set of friends for another, her association with a new boy (Slater) in school turns out to have deadly consequences. Director Michael Lehmann turned this unusual film into something more than another teen-death flick. There is real wit and sharp satire afoot, and the very fusion of horror and comedy is provocative in itself. Heathers remains a kind of benchmark in contemporary cinema for bringing surreal intelligence into Hollywood films. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The HEATHERS Have Never Looked Better.
This Digitally Remastered VHS Letterboxed Collector's Edition is a lovely gift. Anchor Bay Entertainment has recently revived some long-lost titles in its library and, thankfully, they have restored the prints to the proper format. No more EP videocassettes!

I do feel I should clarify, however, that this VHS edition does NOT have clamshell packaging. Rather, its front cover opens to juxtaposed messages from scripter Dan Waters and director Michael Lehmann.

For $13.99, this edition of HEATHERS is quite the bargain. For starters, it is 100 times more worthy than the DVD format release. Anchor Bay does well in its VHS territory, but its DVD format releases are problematic. The special features rarely work and my DVD player has actually refused its discs before.

What is also nice about this edition is its inclusion of several theatrical trailers (far too many!) and promotional interviews with lead actors Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. Too bad these recorded sessions couldn't have been digitally remastered; they haven't aged well.

As for a previous reviewer's joy at the absence of Molly Ringwald in this 1980s black comedy for the teen set, she is way off the mark. Molly Ringwald was hardly featured in every '80s teen flick--just the good ones. Just what, exactly, is she overjoyed at? Christian Slater in a '80s teen pic is supposed to be a relief? I don't get it. Let us leave Molly's good name untarnished, OK?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cynical and Twisted Tale
This movie was creepy in a good way. I loved watching Veronica give sarcastic and twisted view on the Heathers' ruling of the school. I also loved the way that Christian Slater played a romantic yet utterly insane guy bent on helping her get bitter-sweet drain-o revenge. Watch the movie and you'll see whatI mean. I reccommend it to all of those who get sick of happy little pay-back movies and want something more like a dark comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!
Many people think that this movie is terrible, horrible, and has no point. But if you look behind that, You see a greta and original movie about teen life.

3-0 out of 5 stars good movie, but sorry people it's not original.
watch massacre at central high, then you'll know where the idea of "heathers" came from. watch both movies back to back and you'll see how much "heathers" is like "massacre at central high."

5-0 out of 5 stars FROM VICTIM TO VICTORY
AFTERMATH: A TEST OF LOVE, is an intense, poignant, true story of the Ross Colburn family, and their desperate attempt to keep it all together, when their mother is murdered and brother is seriously injured, in an unfortunate robbery. Dr. Ross Colburn is played by the incomparable Richard Chamberlain. He is a successful Ob/Gyn specialist, whose busy career has kept him extremely busy. The tall, gorgeous actor, decked out in his scrubs, and in his slacks and white coat; was so remindful to me of his Dr. Kildare days, when the handsome physician had millions of women, all over the world, hopelessly in love. After thirty plus years, it was astounding to see how beautifully the actor has matured. He is even more handsome with maturity, and has gorgeous silver streaks in his hair, and wonderful laugh lines (I call them krinkles), etched in his beautiful face. His wife, Irene, is played by the wonderful Michael Learned, who has all through the years, taken good care of this family, to allow her husband more time to devote to his medical practice. When she is senselessly murdered in a robbery, Dr. Colburn attempts to heal his grieving family and keep them together. The in depth characterization present in this film, was amazing; we really got to know this family. Dr. Colburn's interaction with each child was sheer magic, and he showed a great emotional range in this film. It was obvious, Richard Chamberlain understood the intense sorrow, and agony his character experienced, and really reached down into the depth's of his being, to bring a masterful performance to the screen. This is a true story , and is based on the book, VICTIM, by Gary Kinder. This moving story is a "must have", for all Richard Chamberlain fans. ... Read more

Here's another gritty independent film that tries to invade Tarantino territory by casting Christopher Walken--that most reliable of indie-film actors--as a Mobster who gets chummy with a group of preppie-like young men and becomes the victim of a kidnapping scheme. One of the kidnappers (Henry Thomas) has a sister who's been abducted by another group of kidnappers, and they've bagged Walken for his Mob connections and negotiating power. What follows is a game of psychological strategy in which the desperate group of guys slowly lose their advantage to the smarter, more experienced gangster--even though they've got Walken tied to a chair. The situation turns volatile when the young men start to doubt the wisdom of their strategy and suspect betrayal within the group, and Suicide Kings turns into a talky, repetitious thriller only partially redeemed by Denis Leary's cagey role as Walken's Mob lieutenant. The movie's a showcase for its cast of rising talent (including Jay Mohr, Jeremy Sisto, Johnny Galecki, and Sean Patrick Flanery), but not even Walken can hold it all together. What's best about the film is Leary's sinister presence in a peripheral role and Walken's trademark villainy, here toned down to a steady, simmering menace. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

The look, fashion and soundtrack might be dated, but the point sure isn't. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars all emotions encorporated.
Fantastic film! Simple plot with every emotion being tapped by the five different stories, most noteably: Love, Respect, empathy, humor, anger, confusion, humiliation, and concern. Definitely one of the most unique films on the market from both a creative and a demograghic outlook. Each story not only takes you to a new location, but also, to a new feeling, a new culture, and a new perspective on what it is to be human no matter who you are. I highly recommend this film and I am eagerly anticipating it's release on dvd.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding
My wife and I both regard Night on Earth as our all time favorite movie. We've taken on the role of sharing it with as many of our friends and family as possible. In the process we've had the chance to view it at least a half-dozen times. Each time as it weaves a more intricate tapestry, we appreciate the subtilties of direction, the skillful acting, the exquisite attention to detail, and the range of emotions evoked. It is truly a masterpiece that deserves to be remastered on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Time to open my mouth I've been waiting years for the dvd
I went to see the film reluctantly with a friend when it came out. Well, need I say I have been telling everyone I know about it ever since.... and every so often I check to see if it's out yet. I've been patient enough! When is this film going to be release on DVD format? It's long over due! The film has great well known actors, hysterical humor, a great way to look at how a simple everyday cab ride in there respective locations, Rome, Paris, Helsinki, NY and LA could give such comical insight to our cultural differeces. GREAT GREAT GREAT!

5-0 out of 5 stars should be a cult classic
Night On Earth is the story of five simultaneous taxi rides in 5 different corners of the world- evening in L.A., nighttime in New York, late night in Paris & Rome, and dawn in Helsinki. These five vignettes are all masterfully written and directed. The acting is superb; the cinematography is marvelous (great street scenes of each city). The stories run the gauntlet of emotions, hilariously funny at times, deeply serious at others. I cannot understand why this terrific movie has not received more accolades than it has. ...
