4-0 out of 5 stars High scores for this one...
A fun, lighthearted story of a teenage reporter wanna-be who finds herself--and her classmates--in the middle of a murder mystery. It's a fun movie to watch with your kids, not overly sugary. The story is well-written and Lindsay Lohan is really a pleasure to watch! As a parent of a pre-teen, I highly recommend it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Bad immitation of the great classic Rascal
This is one of the baddest remakes ever, i couldn't believe that this was in one of the greatest box office success ever, i am not a regular watcher of the crazy classic family comedy, but i even would notice the difference between the two, it's worth watching but these fake acting kids don't live up to the great charecters of the 6 Rascals. Well, my point is that this movie is like a feature legnth bad episode, i would give it a 6.5/10.

5-0 out of 5 stars It always makes me laugh.
I've loved this movie since I was...very young, I can't think of the exact age. But the point is that I loved it then and I still love it now. It's got a very innocent and yet humorous plot about a group of friends who are part of the "He-Man Womun Haters Club," but the club is in jeopardy when one of the members, Alfalfa, falls in love with Darla. Things get even worse when a rich kid by the name of Waldo moves to town and steals Darla's affections. It leads to a very funny string of events all leading up to the big race to win a much-sought-after trophy. Great for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars WAY BETTER THAN OUR GANG - a classic for family and kids
I have seen many of the old "Our Gang" shows. I found them boring, dull and just a little strange. The humor was so dry and odd. The picture quality was lacking even for its age and I just could not enjoy them - not even as a kid of under 12. This movie however, took some of the best ideas from the whole "Our Gang" collection (not to mention many original ideas) and combined it with great film technique, unforgetable humor and some of the most talented kids I have ever seen as performing artists. The lines are impossible not to quote after the movie. This movie is great for adults who need a break from all the filth found in modern media and can enjoy the hilarious childhood antics that we all identify with. The real genius of the film is how the movie captures and expresses the mindframe of a child. I love the line "The Blur has been the fastest gocart ever since the begining of time ... 5 years". If you wanted the "cutest" movie ever made, in my opinion, this is it. It's great! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just an all around fun movie to watch
I own 'The Big Green' on VHS and it's a great movie. It's about this really small town with nothing to do (they don't even have a pizza hut!) called Emma, Texas where the 'big kids' are used to taking the 'laid-back' approach on school. All of them at the begining have bad attitudes toward their new teacher Ms. Mountgumry (i know thats spelled wrong) a young teacher from England that tries to inspire and modivate the kids but at the begining doesn't have very much luck.

While trying to teach Geography Ms. M decides to try to get the kids attention by breaking the globe on her desk and begin to do a soccer 'trick' the kids are very impressed and this begins the story line for the rest of the movie. She decides to form a soccer team with Sheiff Tom helping her couch (but at first the only reason he's there is because he's smitten with Ms. M) although the kids hate the idea.

Ridicously they have their first game against an all-wining but snotty team 'the knights' with an a hole for a couch (couch Jay) who takes an interest in Ms. M. and grew up with Sheiff Tom and constantly puts him down.

Of course, they get slaughtered and humiliated. After this the kids are ready to forget the whole thing.

But Sheiff Tom and Ms. M pushes them to keep trying, they get their team name 'The Big Green' and keep trying even though they still suck.

Their luck changes when the new kid in town and in class Duan moves with his mother and although he's very quiet and they tease him in class at first they come to find out he's an extrodinary talent in Soccer. After begging his mother to let him on the team, he's on the team and they start getting better more encouraged and start winning games.

Everythings good until a family situation threatens to drive Duan out of town with his mom right before the final game against the team that slaughtered them before, The Knights.

(Ms. M and Knights Couch Jay makes a bet that if the knights win Ms. M will kiss him, but if The Big Green wins he has to kiss their mascot ernie *a painted green goat*)

it's a funny and sometimes touching ride that I recommend watch when your relaxing at home and need something to watch. It's for all ages something you can watch with your family or even by yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars I thought it was good enough
This movie is pretty good, but I think it was so typical, theres a lot of movies about kids who cant play a sport and it has that red headed kid who is in like every kids movie! anyway its about young kids who cant play soccer and dont know the first thing about it. Ya might like this if you like the movies Swiching Goals and Ladybugs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic in My Eyes
Yes, it seems like you're typical storyline, but it's told with so much more enthusiasm and the actors are much more realistic than the other 'oh they can't play but by the end they're champs'. It also is set in a small-town, however most that I've seen are in big cities. This is just a classic-the acting is superb, and the kids' are just to adorable, especially the little boy. One thing that is typical; the overweight kid
plays the barely-as-to-move position.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great movie rain or shine
The Big Green is the story of some bored kids in a dying town named Elma. And a sheriff who hates the kids, calls them midgets. And they call him Deupty Dawg. One day some kids decided to go out in the field at thier school to feed the birds. But then thier new teacher (even though they don't know it yet) sees them and thinks they are in trouble, and chases the birds away with the hose casuing the kids to get wet. Her name is Anna Montgomery (Oliva d'Abo) and she will be teaching the big kids for the first half of the school year.

3-0 out of 5 stars a so-so movie
It was funny and a overall good movie, but it was really not that good. It was just a avrege movie. But its a good overall rainy day movie. Or a lazy day movie. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars 3rd (and final) in the series
Contrary to popular belief, this is not a new movie. Not at all. This is actually Disney's very first direct-to-video live action films, which was first released in 1997. It did not go over well and has long since been the hardest to find of the trio. Unlike the other two theatrical films, this movie was only ever released in full frame... so us widescreen enthusiasts have nothing to complain about here. What I can complain about is the overall cheap-feeling that this film has. Rick Moranis is the only original character, and the action does not have the epic, theatrical quality of the original films. This feels like a 2-day shoot soundstage production with a very closed-in feeling. It's kind of like taking the first five minutes of "Toy Story," with the army men on the staircase, etc. and extending that claustrophobic feeling for the 65-minute running time. All in all, this most compares to a typical Disney Channel Original Movie. In fact, it's been shown as one ever since its release!! Not exactly a Disney highpoint, collectors will want this third film to complete the collection... ... Read more

A gentle, oddly idealistic script and assured performances by a strong ensemble cast make this coming-of-age tale a standout. Skipped Parts is the story of Sam, a young would-be writer, and his free-spirited mother. Shipped off to the wilds of Wyoming by his embarrassed politician-grandfather, Sam (Bug Hall) and his mother Lydia (Jennifer Jason Leigh, clearly enjoying herself) get down to the business of getting to know and shocking the locals. Sam meets kindred spirit Maurey (Mischa Barton), and the two, though only 14, begin to experiment with sex--the "skipped parts" of the novels they've been reading. Hall and Barton give astonishingly good performances for such young actors--Barton in particular shows a poise that bodes well for her continued career. The script isn't perfect, but it is earnest and affectionate toward its characters, and that goes a long way. Watch for Drew Barrymore, who joins in the fun for a few quietly silly moments as Sam's dream girl. --Ali Davis ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "SKIP" the movie - opt for the novel
I was so excited when I saw this movie available at my local [video store]. Tim Sandlin's coming-of-age novel is one of my favorite books. It's sweet, self-deprecating, and tactile. Unfortunately, the movie adaptation is dry, humorless and poorly acted. I wasn't sure how Hollywood would take such a shocking and sexual book and relate the important scenes (which quite often were sexual) to reality. You cannot translate this book while playing it safe. I don't think anyone should have tried.

The series of novels, called the "GroVont Trilogy" are worth every penny. You'll laugh despite yourself and be thoroughly entertained. STAY AWAY from the film. Jennifer Jason Leigh overacts as usual, and Brad Renfro isn't smart enough to play the lead. I don't buy it for one second (no pun intended).

I hope this helps - and again Tim Sandlin is a fantastic author - don't use this sorry film to judge his work. Take the time to read the book - you'll thank me...

5-0 out of 5 stars A great coming of age novel. Unforgettable!
This is a great coming of age story that I have watched twice in one week since I decided to buy it on a whim. The story of Lydia and Sam and their exile to Wyoming, their unconventional relationship as mother and son is unforgettable. Lydia isn't a woman who is very good at being a mother considering she drinks quite heavily and goes home with men at the bar. When Sam meets a girl named Maurey, they both decide to start trying to figure out what sex is like. Lydia tells them how to have sex and from that point on, this movie is a strange, oddball journey. This film shows what can happen to kids who grow up too fast, but it does this in a way that is heart-warming and different than most films.

I especially liked Michael Greyeyes' character, Hank Elkrunner. He plays a good guy who falls for Lydia only to have to deal with her wild ways. All of the actors in this film did a great job. And surprisingly, this film has a happy ending.

All in all, a great, funny film that is sure to stay with you long after its over. Hilarious

4-0 out of 5 stars "Here's rule number one - you better not squirt."
"Skipped Parts" takes place in 1963. It is narrated by Sam (Bug Hall), a seventh-grader, and aspiring writer. He doesn't know who his father is because his mother, Lydia (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is a promiscuous lush. Sam's Grandfather sends then away, with his financial support, so he won't be embarrassed by her when he runs for Governor of South Carolina.

They end up in Wyoming, where Sam meets Maurey (Mischa Barton) during a school baseball game. They argue about Mark Twain in class. Shortly after, Maurey and her mom (Peggy Lipton) do a neighborly visit - the Welcome Wagon. Lydia is embarrassingly rude to them. Later, Sam tells his mom he thinks he's in love with Maurey cuz he can't stand her. Sam gets teased and hassled by girls in school, and also by Maurey's boyfriend, Dothan (Brad Renfro). On November 22, 1963, Kennedy is shot. Maurey is very upset and cries, and Sam consoles her. Dothan makes some racist remarks, and Maurey and Sam go to her house. In another fantasy, Sam kisses Maurey's mom. He has a resulting nocturnal emission and shows his mom. Later, Sam tells Maurey about it at the soda shop, and she talks to a waitress about sex. Maurey later shows up to "make sex" with Sam as a learning experience. They try but fail in a funny scene. Later, Lydia gives them a sex talk and advice. (...).

The movie is well-acted by all. There is quite a bit of humor, too. The movie is R-Rated for language, which includes frank sexual talk, and sexual content. However, the sex scenes involving Sam and Maurey are tame and mostly set up by the dialog, which is quite funny. This is probably Mischa's best movie after "Lawn Dogs". Drew Barrymore has a small part in Sam's fantasies.

The DVD has a good commentary by director Tamra Davis, and a trailer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unusual, Dark Comedy
Picked this DVD up at the library, believe it or not. Sounded interesting. Had NOT read the book, so we were able to take it at face value.

My husband and I found ourselves laughing and getting into the lives of these quirky characters, even though they had very little for us to identify with. Jennifer Jason Leigh was very good, as were Mischa Barton and Bug Hall.

The best part of this movie was the scenic views of Wyoming countryside. Okay, I read that it was actually filmed in Canada. But they did do a good job of presenting the natural side of their area.

Overall, this was a good movie, although not in my Top 20 favorites. Worth watching, especially if you can check it out for free from the library.

By the way, I know nothing about this, but apparently there is another movie (a prequel, at that) with the same characters from the trilogy by Tim Sandlin: it is called Floating Away. Not sure if I would see that one or not...

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Film, if you haven't read the book
Notice while you skim the other reviews, the only people who say this is a bad movie are the ones who've read the book. Those people are way too sensitive and end up slandering the actors, all because society couldn't handle the X-rated version of this movie starring 14 year olds that the book's literal translation would've been. OF COURSE IT WAS DUMBED DOWN AND LOST MOST OF IT'S SEXUALITY. It's America. We don't like to talk about true tragic events, like teen pregnancy or drunken parents.

So, ignoring the book, here's the movie: Decent actors play out, most convincingly, the story of a family who is moved from their rich lifestyle to live all alone in a hickville. The mother, who is politically incorrect for the time period, is unnaturally liberal and, thought not portrayed as a tragedy, distant from her son. Scenes in which she inadvertandly tastes his semen, in which the son's girlfriend brings him to accidental climax, in which the two announce that they'll be leaving the room to have sex IN FRONT OF THE MOTHER WHO DOES NOTHING TO STOP THEM... it's all satyrical, but you have it constantly in your head that while it IS funny in this film's context, it happens and isn't funny elsewhere. Cameo by Drew Barrymore as the fantasy girl. Starring Jennifer Jason Leigh as the nutbag mom, Bug Hall (The Little Rascals) as the son, and an onslaught of talented others to fill out the rest of the cast, the film has some very disturbing dramatic and (obviously disturbing) comedic scenes. Quite an odd little film.

Still, the book goes WAY PAST the movie, so if for some reason, this movie fills out your sick desires... grab the book, you'll really enjoy. If you like the movie due to style and humor and plot, grab the book - it's so much better. STILL, I give the film a 4. Great stuff. Sticks with you for a while. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A bold, shining gem in a sea of gray!
What a bold, mad act of genius it was, to make ''The Stupids,'' or even think that it could be made. In the words years later of one of its stars, Jessica Lundy: ''If you are the man with the money and somebody comes to you and says he wants to make a comedy with no plot, no jokes, and not much reason to exist either, and he wants to spend a huge amount of money to go film it --what would you say?'' The impulse to make this movie was based, above all, on imagination. The story of ''The Stupids'' is not founded on cheap melodrama, but on John Landis's ability to imagine. He had to know how that would feel before he could convince himself that the project had a chance of being successful.
''The Stupids" is not a simple biography or an comedy movie--although it contains both elements--but a movie that uses a quest concerning "stolen" garbage as a stage for the flamboyance of a driven, quirky man. Stanley Stupid must be the strangest hero ever to stand at the center of an epic. To play him, John Landis cast one of the strangest of actors, Tom Arnold, a chubby, almost clumsy man with a beautiful sculptured face and a speaking manner that hesitates between amusement and insolence. Tom Arnold's assignment was a delicate one. Although it was widely believed that the Stanley Stupid character was a homosexual, a multimillion-dollar epic filmed in 1996 could not be frank about that. And yet Landis and his writer, Brent Forrester, didn't simply cave in and rewrite Stanley Stupid into a routine hero. Everything is here for those willing to look for it. Using Arnold's peculiar speech and manner as their instrument, they created a character who combined charisma and craziness, who was so different from conventional heroes that he could inspire his family to follow him in a mad "stolen" garbage conspiracy investigation. What Landis, Forrester and Arnold create is a sexually and socially unconventional man who is simply presented as what he is, without labels or comment.
For a movie that runs 86 minutes, ''The Stupids" is not dense with plot details. It is a spare movie in clean, uncluttered lines, and there is never a moment when we're in doubt about the logistical details. The dialogue in these scenes is not complex, and sometimes Forrester makes it so spare it sounds like poetry.
I've noticed that when people remember ''The Stupids,'' they don't talk about the details of the plot. They get a certain look in their eye, as if they are remembering the whole experience, and have never quite been able to put it into words. Although it seems to be a traditional narrative film -- like ''Bridge on the River Kwai''-- it actually has more in common with such essentially visual epics as Kubrick's ''2001'' or Eisenstein's ''Alexander Nevsky.'' It is spectacle and experience, and its ideas are about things you can see or feel, not things you can say. Much of its appeal is based on the fact that it does not contain a complex story with a lot of dialogue; we remember the quiet, empty passages.
The word ''epic'' in recent years has become synonymous with ''big budget B picture.'' What you realize watching ''The Stupids" is that the word ''epic'' refers not to the cost or the elaborate production, but to the size of the ideas and vision. Werner Herzog's ''Aguirre, the Wrath of God'' didn't cost as much as the catering in ''Pearl Harbor,'' but it is an epic, and ''Pearl Harbor'' is not.

Ya, this movie is definatly awful. To bad it isnt possible to give it 0 stars cause that is what i would give it. This is bny far the worst movie i have ever seen. and I have seen a lot af stupid movies. The plot is rediculus in the fist plave, no one is that dumb. The acting is awful, who could act in a part that dumb. Just trust me on this, the movie is to stupid for words. I saw this movie about 6 years ago and still no movie has been as bad as this one.

I watched it with my niece and nephew and they remember all the details and a lot of the dialogue. We often sing "I'm My Own Grandpa" just because.
