One can always count on Steven Seagal to act as the repository of yesterday's action-film clichés, and Exit Wounds is yet another case in point. Seagal plays Detroit cop Orin Boyd, a lone wolf lawman who gets in the middle of his precinct's losing battle against police corruption. Taking on a powerful but crooked cop named Montini (David Vadim)--who is busy making deals with a rich gangster (DMX)--Boyd soon sends fists and feet flying while Tom Arnold provides the comic relief. Director Andrzej Bartkowiak surely had less fun guiding Seagal through slow-motion fight sequences than he did Jet Li in Romeo Must Die, but as compensation he gets to work with the mesmerizing DMX, who looks as though he has leading-man possibilities. Plenty of gratuitous gore, awful cop banter, and miles of cleavage courtesy of Jill Hennessy, who plays Boyd's tough-as-nails boss. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best movie of 2001!
I saw the movie, then got the DVD to watch the Making Of and it was terrific. Steven Seagal reappears after taking a short break in this action packed flick with DMX, Michael Jai White (Spawn), Tom Arnold, Isaiah Washington and Anthony Anderson, who was the life of this movie. Anthony was funny, in fact I think he was the glue that kept the film and characters together.
Summary: Orin Boyd (Steven Seagal) hits rock bottom when he gets thrown out of his precinct 21 and into the worst precinct called 15. He starts off bad and gets worse making enemies from Commander Mulcahy (Jill Hennessy) all the way to the mens locker room and his nightmare begins when he busts an undercover cop called Montini and gets demoted to traffic and ends up in a rage management class where he meets Henry Wayne (Tom Arnold)a TV host, who is really annoying! (Tom was great for the part!)

So whilst all his is happening Latrell Walker (DMX) sets up another meeting with Montini to buy up alot of drugs only Latrell doesn't appear to be who he says he is. When Orin catches up with the help of his new partner George (Isaiah Washington) and Henry he learns that there are some dirty cops up to no good and he seems to be the right guy to stop them. The action scenes and stunts were terrific and I really expected something to happen between Mulcahy and Orin, but watch the movie and find out why nothing happens. Terrific all around, I wonder if they are thinking of a sequel... The title of the movie has absolutely NOTHING to do with the film and the DVD is worth the buy instead of the vhs to see the Making of and an interview with Anthony Anderson.

3-0 out of 5 stars Once again, Tom Arnold provides comic relief.
I have to admit, I was half looking forward to this, and half not. Steven Seagal doesn't really do anything for me - whereas DMX does. Plus, Steven really annoys me, as he tends to speak really quietly, in a monotone voice, so you turn up the sound to hear exactly what he's saying - and then you have to quickly turn it down as guns start shooting, etc.

Once again, he plays a character that starts investigating things that he's never really been assigned too, and no one can stop him sticking his nose in, cos he's so threatening. He looks like a big softie, quite literally. Teamed up with a cop who can't decide whether he's good or bad - and is the first to befriend him in the new precinct - is really predictable.

What is the good thing about this movie? (Apart from DMX obviously) That a lot of the characters are from Cradle 2 The Grave - but without Steven Seagal. You've got DMX (he was better in Cradle 2 The Grave), Anthony Anderson, Tom Arnold, and probably a couple of others.

The whole story is about good cops/bad cops. And which one DMX fits into, is never really explained. (Although he's not a cop) You can never decide whether he's on the good side or the bad side.

The extras are pretty sparse on the DVD. You've got a behind the scenes tour thing with Anthony Anderson, a trailer (whoopee!), and a music video. The music video was quite impressive and surprising! DMX has 'covered' (and when I say covered, I mean sings the chorus, and then raps right the way through it) "Ain't No Sunshine", originally done by Bill Withers, and infamously known in the Notting Hill movie. While it's a good version, it's not really DMX to be covering or sampling such a song, that's so well known in another movie.

The same as at the end of Cradle 2 The Grave, Tom Arnold and Anthony Anderson, have this little scene all to themselves, which is apparently ad-libbed. (Whatever). However, it's not as funny as their scene in Cradle 2 The Grave, and gets tedious after a while.

So I've given this movie a pretty good rating, haven't I? So I've now seen two Steven Seagal movies, and I own one of them. D'ya think I can get a break? I own one, that's enough for me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a thinking man's movie, but that's ok
Ok guys, for all those who thinks "Exit Wounds" is a bad movie, here's the deal; it stars Steven Seagal, you know what you're getting your self into. Why is everyone so down on this movie? Is it the "Godfather"? No. It is what it is; it aims low, but it hit's it's target. Seagal plays Detriot police officer Boyd who is transfered into a new department rife with police corruption. And so a couple of broken wrists later, Seagal is in the middle of cops he can't trust and gangsters with deeper motives. This is Seagal's best movie in a long (LONG) time. He has lost a few pounds (though he still looks pretty hefty) and quit wearing the East Asian wardrobe, which was a step in the right diection. Another right move was casting DMX. I am not a fan of his rap music, but he certainly has charisma here. I was duely impressed. Jill Hennessy is around as Boyd's commanding officer. Hennessy is a good actress (look at "Law and Order" or "Crossing Jordon"), but unfortunately she isn't givin a lot to do here; just look pretty so Seagal can gawk at her. One other note worthy cast member is Tom Arnold. Thankfully he is not on screen that much, so he dosn't have time to wear his welcome out. His talk show material during the ending credits is funny, maybe; depending on your sense of humor he may be hit and miss. The action scenes are fast, exciting, and brutial; lots of gun shot wounds (hense the title) and bone crunching martial arts moves. A word on the fighting choreography; it seems a little fake to me; too much slow motion for my taste. Like I said, it isn't high art, but it is fast paced action thriller with lots of cool fights and lots of testostorone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exit Wounds
This is not the typical Steven Seagal film. His fighting style is different. Recall the fights when Seagal simply broke an arm and the fight was over? In "Exit Wounds," the fights last longer. The action sequences are similar to what you'd expect in a John Woo film. DMX does a decent job of acting though none of his scenes were taxing on his acting abilities. There's plenty of action. It's funny and it's a fun film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best
Exit Wounds is simply one of the best Seagal movies of all time. Far better than Half Past Dead. DMX shocked me with his acting in this movie. There is a great plot that will leave you shocked at the outcome. DMX is also played as a "good guy" in this movie. There are also some parts that are fricken hilarious such as the seen when the fat guy steals Steven Seagals grill. This movie is a must see. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definately The "SuperStar" of My Collection!!!
You've gotta see this dvd!! It is the GREATEST!!! It stars the hliarious Molly Shannon and Will Ferrel from Saturday Night Live. It is a movie about a geeky and very clumsy Catholic school-girl who has all her life wanted to be a superstar so that she could get a "big fireworks hollywood type kiss". So she trys out for a talent contest at school to try and meet her goal. I don't wanna give anything away, but that's basically what it's about... Anyway, I think it's a GREAT movie. I schedule my time to watch it every night at least 4-5 times a week! It's a MUST-HAVE for ALL comedy lovers!!! Gives you PLENTY of laughs!!! :)

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute, but Cheesy
This movie was cute, yet sickening at the same time. It reminds me of an "attempted" funny version of Never Been Kissed.

The movie is about a geeky schoolgirl who has never "hollywood" kissed a boy. She decides that the only way to kiss a boy is to act like the actors/actresses in the movies.

In the beginning, I thought the movie was hilarious. By the end of the movie, I was pretty disappointed. The type of humor in the movie does not change; there is a weak plot in the movie at best. I will say the kid with the birthmark actually caught me off guard though.

This movie isn't a bad movie if you feel you must see it; however, there are a lot of better movies out there to rent or buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Luv it
I'll admit, this movie is kinda bad. But it's one of those movies, that's really bad and stupid and just so ridiculous...that you love it (Like "A Night at the Roxbury"). I first saw this with my best friend at a sleepover when we were totally high on sugar, soda and ice-cream (the best time to watch this movie, by the way...), and it became an instant sleepover classic.

I suggest this movie for the slightly insane (I'm nuts and I'm proud)

4-0 out of 5 stars This movie was truly funny and uplifting
Like several other reviewers, I found this movie funny and entertaining. It was very light with lots of humor. This is a great movie to watch on a rainy day or when you are feeling down and out needing a picker upper.

Many high school girls dream of one day being superstars and/or fantasizing about that first true romantic kiss. These are some of the things portrayed in the movie with lots of humor.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unwatchable. Disgusting.
This movie had EXTREMELY bad humor, EXTREMELY bad acting, and was seriously insulting. It insulted my religin and kids with mental disabilities. My sister is autistic. This movie is unwatchable- I could hardly bear watching. They tried too hard to be funny, and turned out STUPID. Never watch this. Bad words, bad humor, bad- everything! The sexual jokes were really bad and disgusting. How could this have actully made it to the big screen? And if you think I sound old-ladyish, then I'll just let you know: I'm 13. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie! :-)
I saw this movie three times, and each time I found something else that I liked about it. I have only seen Vince Vaughn in "Swingers" and "Psycho" and I must say that his performance in this movie was wonderful. All of the roles I have seen in him are so completely different, and his ability to portray such different characters shows his talent.

As for this movie, I loved it. Very rarely do you see a movie about a single father. This movie shows that fathers love and care about their children too and that it is not just the mother who can do those things. The child who played Calvin, Bobby Moat, is absolutely adorable and he and Vaughn had a great chemistry in the film.

I highly recommend this movie. I only wish I could afford to buy it! :-(

5-0 out of 5 stars ENGAGING!
From beginning to end, "A Cool Dry Place" genuinely entices the viewer. My 20-year old son introduced Vince Vaughn's acting versatility to me when he rented "Clay Pigeons"; his cool, suave manner could "best" James Bond's attitude anyday - and you have to love that "unique" laughter! "Psycho", "Swingers" and "The Lost World:Jurassic Park" are GREAT movies (between my son and I, we own them all), but Vince Vaughn's performance in "A Cool Dry Place" is charming and attractive! Any actor who can portray a "cold, deadly" killer in one movie, but yet portray a loving, but firm, Father in this movie has "Oscar" written into his future.

Joey Lauren Adams was well cast for this film. I bought "Dazed and Confused" last year because I also suffered from the "screwed-up" seventies and graduated from high school in May 1976. I completely related to that movie! I thought Joey Lauren Adams was "Renee Zellweger" - Sorry Joey! After watching "Big Daddy", I had no doubt that there is a BIG difference between the two actresses. Her throaty, sometimes high-pitched, sexy voice is enough to drive Vince Vaughn WILD! She may be a "Veterinarian's assistant", but she HAS MORE CLASS than the woman, Monica Potter, who portrays the "truant" wife. Even though she is "just" the girl friend, she has more wisdom when it comes to "rearing" children and "what is best for the child" and her acting is SUPERB!

Bobby Moat as Calvin is EXCELLENT! A beautiful child and an impressive actor!

Like Samantha K. (Gainesville,FL), I wish I could afford to buy this movie NOW!

5-0 out of 5 stars One thing leads to another
This is the film that sparked my interest in Vince Vaughan. His performance in this film is so sweet and well done that I just had to have more. Imoved on to Swingers, the Locusts, and another favorite, Clay Pigeons. He doesn't seem to do films like these anymore, so this is definately a great place to start your Vince Vaughan collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Movie is absolutely amazing!!
There are a couple reasons why I highly recommend this movie. One of the most compelling reasons is found in the caliber of the cast involved. The acting job is quite spectacular, very realistic, and the story is very vivid and at the same time rough. Many times a director can't capture the audience's attention on "Every day life" type movies. In this movie, the director hit the nail right on the head! I would stack this movie up against "Lord of the Rings", "The Matrix series", "Fast and the Furious", etc any day. Bottom Line- This movie is genuine and a real piece of art work.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a WONDERFUL movie!...
The only reason I heard of this movie was because of Joey Lauren Adams, but I am SO GLAD I hunted it down! It's such a sweet tale, but most importantly, it is REALISTIC. There is no pure evil or pure good in this movie. I found myself sympathizing with each character. The casting is unbelievable. Vince Vaughn and Joey Adams are so convincing and were cast perfectly. The little boy is adorable, i hope to see more of him! I bought this when I was single and childless, and now that i have a 16 month old and husband, it hits me twice as hard. Definitely a tearjerker towards the end. ... Read more

It's hard to ignore the sad and conspicuous absence of the late John Belushi, but this long-delayed sequel to 1980's The Blues Brothers still has Dan Aykroyd--as Chicago bad boy and blues rocker Elwood Blues--to keep the music alive. Once again, Elwood's trying to reunite the original Blues Brothers Band, and this time he's got a strip-joint bartender (John Goodman) and a 10-year-old orphan named Buster (J. Evan Bonifant) joining him at center stage. Believing that Elwood has kidnapped the kid, the cops are hot on his trail as the reunited band hits the road for the Battle of the Bands in Louisiana and the All-Star Blues Jam that ends the movie in a rockin' blaze of glory. It's a shameless clone of the first film, and nobody--especially not Aykroyd or director John Landis--seems to care that the story's not nearly as fun as the music that's used to stretch it out. Of course there's a seemingly endless parade of stunts, including a nonstop pileup of police cars that's hilariously absurd, but what really matters here--indeed, the movie's only saving grace--is the great lineup of legendary blues musicians. Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Junior Wells, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Jonny Lang, Eddie Floyd, and Blues Traveler are among the many special guests assembled for the film, and their stellar presence makes you wonder if the revived Blues Brothers shouldn't remain an obscure opening act.The collector's edition DVD includes production photos, the theatrical trailers, and a behind-the-scenes featurette about the making of the film including interviews with the principal cast. --Jeff Shannon ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This Is A Pathetic Movie
If Blues Brothers 2000 were made as a documentary about the Blues Brothers or a documentary about the musicians in the movie, then I might've given it some stars, but, as a movie, this is a horrible, pathetic, feeble attempt to recreate the magic of the first film, which is a near perfect comedy. If there were an "E.T." part II, it would probably suck as bad as BB 2000. Certain movies should not be tainted with sequeals. This movie has animation! What audience was this movie created for? If I wanted to see a film strictly about blues performances and blues legends I'll rent a documentary. Blues Brothers is about the characters and this poor excuse for a movie has none of the elements that made the original such an excellent movie. If you have never seen it and are a fan of the Blues Brothers please do not buy it, it will destroy your image of Elwood and "the band."

3-0 out of 5 stars Controversal Movie, naked DVD
Well, let's get the ugly part out of the way. In trying to make a sequel to the beloved "The Blues Brothers," Landis and Aykroyd took a huge risk in a desperate money grab. The result is far short of perfect, and as a result the creaters have suffered a howling chorus of dreadful reviews. But step back and realize that anything short of the PERFECT sequel would have been critically thrashed, to say nothing of what the fans would have done (and did). Now one can see so many of the things that went right that could have gone horrifically wrong. In bringing John Goodman aboard, They refused to try to replace Jake, and instead created the new, likeable Mighty Mack, a much lower-key personality, and left Elwood in the driver's seat. I do want to say a second and point that Goodman is legitimately GOOD in this movie, without any handicapping. The same loony stunts are back. Then, ultimately, they DID remember the single best thing about the original movie, the music (as they adroitly pointed out in the first trailer). Here they have lined up a staggering array of musical talent, and the movie gets lively, upbeat feel from the marvelous sound.

Of course, they also did a lot wrong. J. Evan Bonifant, as Buster Blues, is a mysterious addition. Cab Blues is an even more bizarre addition, purely added, in my estimation, to cover another loss (Cab Calloway) and let them re-work the I-see-the-light-scene from the first. The movie hems a little TOO close to the original, and quite frankly, the first movie's plot was stretched almost transparently thin in the first telling, setting aside the second. Some of the cameos are bordering on offensively flat (Darrell Hammond's, in particular), and that really brings us to the sum of the movie: it has all the right parts, but somehow they don't fit together. But many of the parts are REALLY right.

But there a lot of friendly nods to the first film, and the movie keeps a fun breezy spirit. And really, on its own, without trying to make it stand next to the towering, built-up remembrance of the first, it is a fun movie with terrific music.

The DVD, though, is one documentary away from being a direct copy of the VHS release. Shame! Shame! At least the DVD lets you skip to the musical numbers.

Overall, it's a movie I liked an enjoyed, and like to go back to and watch every now and then (more than the original, mainly because its easier to skip scenes without a feeling of missing out). Not a great movie, but still something fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mr Landis- you should be ashamed
Can't see how anybody who loves the original can rate this pathetic sequal. The worst aspects for me are the casting of a silly little boy as a 'third' blues brother , the rip off of virtually every plot line from the first movie & second rate musical interludes from former greats who look & sound like they're only in this for the money.

Don't buy this movie please .

3-0 out of 5 stars A comedic action musical? An action-packed musical comedy?
I never watched the first one, so I'm not going to say anything about John Belushi, or "Was it better than the last one?" or any of that. If you saw the first one, you will be continually saying, "Duh, we know this backstory already," throughout the review, so you may choose to read a different one.
Elwood Blues is an old blues musician, and he has an interest in restarting the Blues Brothers band. He finds out that his "father" and brother have died, and without these key players, it takes a little doing to restart the Blues Brothers. One of the new additions is a little 10-year old who is presumed to be kidnapped by Elwood. The Illinois police are soon after them, and the Blues Brothers join a battle of the bands competition. When the police aren't chasing them, a band of Russian communists (and later, a group of guerilla, anti-U.S militants) are. One car chase stands out in particularly: a road block turns into a fiasco as something similar to a mosh pit of police cars develops. Some of the songs are absolutely purposeless, as if a series of commerical jingles and music videos were played spontaneously throughout the movie.
This movie has a little of everything. It's a featherweight (but certainly not light) on action and a definite heavyweight in comedy and music. This movie is a bit like a standard sports movie: a bunch of guys, past their prime, who used to play together, decide to get together once again and show the world who rules. It's a great comic musical, and one of the few musicals that isn't full of pickpockets or little girls singing in an orphanage (i.e. , Oliver Twist and Annie.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as they'd have you believe
OK, So this isn't as good as the first film. And how could it compare to a classic. But it's actually one of the best sequels of any great film.

Yes, the story is ludicrous, but it does still amuse. But in truth, the entire film is really just an excuse for linking great musical sets together.

The music IS magnificent. (The acting is awful, but since most of the cast are professional singers rather than professional actors it isn't really surprising.)

If anything the film is more of a homage to the original, taking everything (car chases, ridiculous plot) to the extreme. If you don't like the film the first time, watch it again. You might be surprised! ... Read more

You might be surprised! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Seinfeld with a heart
Sometimes movies just work better on television then on the big screen. Bruce McCulloch's Dog Park is one of those instances where without the expectations that paying 10 bucks brings to a movie, a small film's charm can come through.

The story here is really not much of one. Guy gets dumped, girl takes dog, guy walks around complaining about girl who gets dog, and guy then starts falling for another girl with other dog. Yet without an over-bearing plot, the fun of Dog Park comes through, as the characters are given the leverage to express whatever feelings they have about their dating lives. Luke Wilson brings a down to earth quality to his role as Andy, the down-on-his-luck romantic. Wilson gives his character a believable bewilderment about his continuing troubles with the opposite sex. The big surprise here is Natasha Henstridge, making her character Lorna someone who you could actually meet in a bar. Even though she's a knockout, the leggy blond is actually able to fit in nicely to the day-to-day quality of the film.

The dialogue is very sitcom like, but on the boob tube that's not a problem. Wilson's and Janeane Garofalo's characters, chat about relationships in almost the same way that Jerry and Elaine talked about dating on Seinfeld. The only difference is the characters are far more endearing. Garofalo's natural likeability for example, is able to shine through in her small, yet very key role.

Dog Park has more sweet then funny moments, there isn't per say a laugh-out-loud instance in the movie. But Dog Park does have a brisk lightness to it with characters who you don't mind spending 90 minutes with. Think of it as a nice sit down with friends movie, that is much better than what is normally on TV.

2-0 out of 5 stars Simply put, a "B" movie
I would like to say that the Mark McKinney scenes make renting the video worth it, but there simply aren't enough of them to justify such a statement. The messages behind the film are a little too transparent to call it clever, the plot and dialogue are a little too trite to call it well-written, and the characters (with the exception of McKinney's dog psychiatrist) are too thin to be interesting. I loved Kids in the Hall (including Bruce McCulloch), but this movie left me as cold as all the rest of McCulloch's post-Kids work. If you like McCulloch's stuff, you may like this movie. Otherwise, there's not much point in seeking it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars subtle and clever spin on love stories
for those who need explosions, julia roberts, or buses that can't slow down in order to enjoy a film, this one is not for you. Dog Park is a smart romantic comedy, brilliantly directed and with a great soundtrack to boot (esp. rox sexsmith). the viewer is treated to the added bonus of the chemistry between bruce mccolluch and mark mckinney and between the brothers wilson. not a character is wasted in this film-- rare for a genre that thrives off superfluous "best friend" roles. there are no mere "best friends" in this romantic comedy that not only amuses, but makes subtle assertions about the the human heart. mccolluch's visionary direction makes great use of his talented, all-star cast. mccolluch won't spoonfeed the viewer. if you're not willing to think while viewing, you best watch buy yourself a mainstream american comedy, perhaps something starring david spade.

3-0 out of 5 stars MOVIE IS ONLY SO SO, BUT THE MUSIC IS INCREDIBLE!
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET THE SOUNDTRACK, IF THERE IS ONE?
I HAVE LOOKED EVERYWHERE!

1-0 out of 5 stars This movie is the pits.
The movie has no point and its so boring. If you are soooo tempted to see it, rent it before buying it. I'll assure u, u won't like it. ... Read more

Molly Shannon, the latest Saturday Night Live comic to have a movie built around her, isn't exactly funny--in fact, she's a little unsettling. Her creation, the neurotic Catholic schoolgirl Mary Katherine Gallagher, invites laughter because she's a little too close to the bone for anyone who grew up feeling ugly and unloved, which is a lot of people. Mary lives with her grandmother (Glynis Johns), who insists that Mary study business. Mary herself yearns to be famous and admired, though for what isn't exactly clear; she envisions some vague combination of singing, dancing, and acting that will make her a superstar. A talent show promises to be her ticket to stardom (the winning prize is a role in "a movie with positive moral values"), and she won't let her loser status or any hostile cheerleaders stand in her way. Meanwhile, Mary acts out dating fantasies with trees and signposts, envisions the school lunch room bursting into a Fame-like dance number, and longs for the biggest jock in school. What makes Superstar more than just a collection of bad high school memories is that, though the formulaic plot redeems Mary, the movie as a whole isn't so sure. Mary completely loses herself in her obsessive fantasies--many inspired by cheesy made-for-TV movies--but there's always someone watching, aghast, as Mary acts out her inner thoughts. Is she misunderstood or freakish? Superstar never commits to one side or the other, which makes it both comic and uncomfortable. --Bret Fetzer ...

And if you think I sound old-ladyish, then I'll just let you know: I'm 13. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Two of Seagal's Best!
These two movies are a great place to start for those who have ever had any interest in seeing why there's so much hype about Steven Seagal. The fact that they are in a two pack will also please DVD collectors who only want to purchase the best of the best, for these are definitely two of Steven Seagal's finest films. They were shot on a bigger budget than most of Seagal's efforts and, while they are definitely vehicles centered around Steven and his martial arts skills, both films contain big-name co-stars of real merit. The stories are fun and engaging, and the action is exiting AND inspiring, which are two other obvious reasons why these films had such box office appeal when they were in theatres.

UNDER SIEGE is the story of Steven Seagal (as Casey the Cook!) and his efforts to save a ship that has been hijacked. Things get complicated when a stripper below deck (played by the lovely and comically talented Erika Elainek) miscues her entrance and pops out of a bachelor party cake to find no one left to dance for. She stumbles into Casey the cook who now really has his hands full! Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey put in memorable guest appearances as the head villains, but it is the combination of the under-the-top Seagal with the over-the-top Elainek that really make this one shine. (Oh, and Seagal intermitently performs some beautiful aikido based moves as well.)

EXIT WOUNDS has Seagal playing a veteran cop with anger management problems who's sent to the projects as punishment. There he encounters police corruption and a very suspicious character played by DMX (who's actually a pretty good actor here, although one wonders why his character is able to hold his own in a fight with Seagal's combat trained cop). The uncharismatic Michal Jai White offers a high kicking contrast to Seagal's inspirationally interesting redirectional arm techniques, and Anthony Anderson and Tom Arnold provide plenty of gut-busting laughs (don't miss the end credits!). It's easy to root for the aging Seagal in this one as he basically plays someone similar to his actor self, an aging martial artist and stoically tough action hero who's considered a relic of the past by today's everchanging world. While flashy athletic choreography seems to be the norm these days in martial arts films, it's a nice change to go back in time and see real moves performed by a relatively ordinary man. There's some flash here and there, but most of Steven Seagal's techniques are based on Aikido which is an art for those whose aim is not to become a supreme athlete or a show off or to hurt others, but rather to simply be able to redirect an agressor's energy causing them to become unbalanced and under control. (This is an art that is great for the designated driver for instance who has to deal with drunk friends that are out of hand. You don't want to hurt your friends!) Seagal could be a GREAT role model for the ordinary Joe if he would continue to play characters like this that everybody could emulate if they so chose.

I HIGHLY recommend these two movies as examples of Steven Seagal at his best! Other recommendations of his best work would be ABOVE THE LAW (his first and a nice introduction to his philosophy of Aikido) and OUT FOR JUSTICE (a tough mafia movie with a truly heinous villain). ... Read more
