5-0 out of 5 stars An essential collection!
This is a review of the VHS video "Michael Jackson: Video Greatest Hits HIStory" Vol. 1. Whether or not you are a fan of Michael Jackson, this is an essential video because it shows how good music videos can be. BILLIE JEAN is a striking video that broke down color barriers on MTV; THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL has a loose improvisational feeling to it which makes it fun to watch; BLACK OR WHITE is modern masterpiece complete with morphing and the controversial "panther dance" sequence. In the original version of this video, Michael smashes in a car windshield that has racist grafitti on it... he is fighting back against the racism. However, in the version included on this tape, the grafitti is edited out, so we just see Michael smashing a window for no apparent reason. Even so, the video is still an amazing experience! ROCK WITH YOU takes us back to 1980 before Michael's plastic surgery; BAD and BEAT IT include some of the best choreography even seen in music videos, although the version of BAD on this tape is the short version, not the full version with Wesley Snipes. This tape also includes the videos for Thriller, Remember The Time, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough and Heal The World in their entirety. This video is a powerful mix of music, dance, and film. Even if you don't think Michael is the King of Pop, this collection proves he is the King of VIDEO!

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Jackson - Video Greatest Hits - HIStory on Film
This spectacular compilation of Michael Jackson's music videos is a must-see for all MJ fans, and anyone else who enjoys good music and dancing. This tape includes the videos:

-Billie Jean -The Way You Make Me Feel -Black or White* -Rock with You -Bad (shortened version without Wesley Snipes) -Thriller (entire video with credits) -Beat It -Remember the Time -Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough -Heal The World

This is a great video that shows not only the evolution of Michael Jackson's music, but also that of his appearance. Co-stars include Eddie Murphy, Iman, Magic Johnson, McAuley Culkin, Bart and Homer Simpson, and others. An exceptional video!!! *In the video Black or White, Michael appears to be furiously smashing the windows of a car for no reason. In the original, racist graffiti is painted on the windows. This was edited out in this version. Relax, Michael is not crazy. Or at least not that crazy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Video HIStory
Don't just listen to the album, watch the videos! However there are fewer songs in this package than the audio counterpart. We see videos for hits from OFF THE WALL,THRILLER,BAD,DANGEROUS and of course, the audio counterpart of HISTORY. No fan of the King Of Pop should be without this unless he/she chooses not to.

3-0 out of 5 stars Big fan here but this is a disappointment....
Honestly, I love Michael Jackson's music and have purchased History 2 on VHS (the gold box) and Dangerous: The Short Films before I got this. I was excited because I thought I would see some things different on this DVD, but it's all the same! You're better off purchasing Dangerous: The Short Films or History 2 because most of the same material on this video is on the others, and the others have some new added footage.

5-0 out of 5 stars This groundbreaking comedy series is Dyn-O-Mite!
When I was a kid, Good Times was one of those TV shows I simply would not miss each week. Even after its hilarious run ended, it was a constant companion of my youth in the form of syndicated reruns. Eventually, it faded away from the airwaves, and that is why I am so happy to see the release of this complete Season One DVD collection. The trials and joys of the Evans family have always been an indelible part of my memory, but watching these early episodes again is in many ways like seeing the show for the very first time. I used to just laugh at the crazy antics of J.J. and enjoy the show only for its comedy, but now I can more clearly understand the deeper meaning behind it all. While the Evans family life is far from typical, it does nobly reflect the struggles, pride, and humanity of families trying to survive and make a good life for their children in ghetto conditions. This truly was a groundbreaking television show, the first to feature a realistic African-American family trying to overcome life's great adversities together. However much they bickered and argued, the Evans family members supported and loved one another a great deal, and I believe it is this facet of the show as much as its unsurpassed comedy that explains its appeal to viewers of all races then and now.

Almost thirty years later, Good Times is still funnier than almost every other television show ever produced. What impressed me is the way the show began; the look and feel of the series was already firmly established in the very first episode, as James struggles to pay the rent and keep his family off the streets. When I was little, I didn't particularly like James because he seemed mean to me with his constant yelling. As an adult, I am a tremendous fan of John Amos' portrayal of the proud, hardworking family patriarch. This man worked like a dog in order to provide for his family, and the constant problems he faced getting and then keeping jobs is more than enough reason to explain his sometimes heated words and deeds. I no longer look at Good Times as the J.J. show; this first season seems to me to built around James Evans, Sr., although Esther Rolle, Jimmie Walker, Ralph Carter, Bernnadette Stanis, John Amos, and Ja'net Du Bois all delivered truly wonderful performances. Toward the end of these first 13 episodes, J.J. does begin to emerge as the prominent comedic talent, having served earlier as dependable but not yet featured comic relief. Jimmie Walker really comes into his own on the final episode included here, "My Son the Lover," setting the stage for great and equally hilarious things to come in later seasons.

I won't go into an episode by episode discussion, but I will mention a few of the really significant storylines that appeared. The struggle James has bringing home the bacon is a constant, but the burdens caused by his lack of education deliver a strong message to both J.J. and the viewing audience in "Junior the Senior." Teenage sexuality is addressed in "Sex and the Evans Family," a story featuring a classic display of the double standard that exists between males and females. Racism is constantly at the fore, personified in young Michael (or as James often calls him, "the militant midget"). The importance Florida places on religion and always doing what is right, no matter the costs incurred by your decision, is another strong element of the show, one given a brilliant exposition in the very second episode, "Black Jesus." Every episode imparts a meaning to the audience, one never lost amidst all of the comedy - and I do mean comedy. Good Times is still laugh-out-loud funny; it actually seems funnier now than it did years ago. While young viewers may not "get" some of the jokes based on 1970s pop culture, there is more than enough comedy spread around to guarantee a fun time will be had by all. There are no frills to this DVD package, though. I would have liked to see at least some sort of special feature, be it interviews with cast members or some kind of feature relating the story of how Good Times made it on to CBS as a somewhat controversial spin-off of a spin-off (All in the Family begat Maude, and Maude begat Good Times). You do get a little promo advertising the other vintage television shows already released by Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment, but this can hardly be called a special feature. In the end, though, what matters most is the newfound opportunity to enjoy the episodes themselves once again. I hope more seasons of Good Times are forthcoming because the thirteen shows from Season One, as great as each and every one of them are, are simply not enough to satisfy my demands for more.

4-0 out of 5 stars John Amos MAKES This Show Good!
This is a nicely-packaged 2-disc set of the complete first season of the 1974-1979 TV series.

Video quality isn't perfect, but still good enough to make you appreciate this funny sitcom again on the DVD format.

There are many funny episodes during the truncated, 13-show debut season of this "Maude" spinoff. With most of the laughs provided (in my view) by the head man of the Evans' household, James (John Amos). Mr. Amos can be very, very funny (doing a lot with just a stare from those big eyes of his). The frequent family altercations between James Sr. and James Jr. (Jimmie Walker) make for some delightful comic moments.

So, if you want to dive back into some classic 1970s television, grab this "Good Times Season One" boxed set on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars family matters
i think family matters would be a great show to have on dvd. It's nice to sit with your family and share some laughter

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Times!
Wow,it was three decades ago that Good Times premiered on CBS. This is a grand spin-off of ALL IN THE FAMILY. What I mean by that is it's a spinoff of MAUDE starring Beatrice Arthur. She is Edith Bunker's cousin Maude Finlay. The late Esther Rolle as Florida Evans was first seen on MAUDE. As Florida's husband James Evans Sr.,is John Amos. The most popular character is their son James Jr. or J.J.,played by Jimmie Walker. His trademark catchphrase is "Dynomite!!" Janet DuBois is J.J. sister. DuBois's vocal is heard in the Jeffersons' theme song. The Jeffersons' Mike Evans co-created the series and produced it after leaving the Jeffersons in 1976.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff, too!
The subject matter of these earliest episodes of Good times have already been discussed. But fans of the show may also want to know that each episode contains scenes that have not been seen since their first run in 1974. Usually the codas of these stories that have been cut for syndication in recent years and a few bits of introductory business that help with the telling.

But in either case, these episodes recall Bobby Kennedy's 1967 statement that he would like for all networks to show a no-punch -pulled documentary of ghetto life to wake White America up out of it's apathy. "Good Times" was probably the closest thing to what he may have had in mind, although it's actual effect was limited. These early episodes, prior to the emergence of JJ's clowing, did more to tell the truth about ghetto life than any other of it's time, and even now for that matter.

It is a credit to the writing and actors that they showed the Evans family retaining their dignity and humanity in spite of some really dehumanizing conditions. ... Read more

Director John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, Rosewood) made an earnest effort in this, his second, film to say a great deal that is true and relevant about living and loving in a violent, difficult time in American history. Janet Jackson plays a beautician and poet who withdraws into herself after her boyfriend is murdered by gangsters. The late Tupac Shakur plays a postman who tries to get through to her, and the two travel on a course through urban America, connecting with family and community. Singleton has so much on his mind that the film comes out a terrible muddle, but there is a certain integrity peeking through the fog. Shakur makes a startlingly good impression in his film debut, and Jackson strips away her star veneer to play something like a real person--and entirely succeeds. Maya Angelou wrote the poems that pass as those penned by Jackson's character, and she also appears in the film. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a great film!
Poetic Justice is about a girl named Justice (Janet) who writes poetry and is trying to get through hard times that have happened in the past and start over. Justice and her friend Keisha take a trip to Oakland with Keisha's boyfriend Chicago and friend Lucky (Tupac). Justice and Lucky fall in love through the movie. This is a really good flick to watch again and again. It also has a great ending and the bomb soundtrack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great film; lots of humour, romance, etc.
I loved watching this film. I saw it the first time on TV and afterwards I went out and rented it and saw it a lot more times. It was just wonderful! Full of different emotions. There was romance and love, sadness, fights, and a lot of great humour!! The main actors (janet jackson, Tupac Shakur) were also terrific and they proved that they could be actors as well as a singer/rapper/song-writer. It was the first time I saw Tupac in a movie, acting. After this film I just had to rent more movies that he was in!

3-0 out of 5 stars Poetic Justice
I was fifteen years old when I first saw this movie when it first came out at the theaters back in the summer of 1993. I liked how the story showed a young black woman healing from the hurt and pain of losing her boyfriend, and how she wrote poetry to help her get through her pain. I thought that the poetry was really good. But the real reason why I give this movie three stars is because there was too much profanity and all the arguing and bickering that went on in the movie. I felt like all of that wasn't necessary for the movie. "Boyz N The Hood" will always be the #1 movie from John Singleton.

3-0 out of 5 stars janet's acting career
Many kids today forget that before janet became a musician, she was an actress who starred in sitcoms and the jacksons tv show doing skits. If they had known, they would have seen that she had acting skills back then, but this movie is not really representative of it though it's not a bad film. I guess the role was a new kind of role for janet and she has said before that cussing didn't come her naturally back then, and it shows. But if you want a romantic comedy with a street style to watch, you just may want to check this out.

1-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!! THIS IS SO STUPID!!!!!
Boyz N the Hood- now that was a good movie. I guess John Singleton thought he was invincible when he came out with this goofy movie. Janet Jackson is very hot and has a nice set but not even that can save this one. You've got this girl- her name is "Justice"?!? - and she JUST HAPPENS TO WRITE POETRY?!? - so of course... we get the movie "POETIC JUSTICE". Brilliantly stupid. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Sequal bites the BIG one!
This movie proves, once again, that the sequal never lives up to the original. The Klumps, trying to ride on the tails of its predecessor, attempts to give the one-dimensional Klump family a second dimension to their characters. FAILED! While the movie is very funny (why it got a second star in my opinion), it tried to take on a more serious family aspect which left the film dragging slowly to the next punch-line delivered by Eddie Murphy in any of his hilarious disguises. If you want a funny movie, I suggest going with the first Nutty Professor where the one-sided Klumps are more suited for their roles, though less present in the overall story line. If you're an avid fan of Grandma Klump and her "Cletus-cutdowns," then this is your movie... though I could have done without seeing her making moves on Buddy Love. Enjoy your movie experience! :)

3-0 out of 5 stars it was alright
Eddie Murphy is the king of comedy, and janet is the queen of pop, excellent combination right? It somewhat works here, but the only problem is that though janet shows promise in acting, she doesn't really have a role in this film that seperates the musician from the actress, Denise Gaines doesn't have much of a personality other than clinging to Sherman and flaunting her beautiful smile. I really think she was great on Good Times and Different Strokes back in the day and the Lena Horne movie she was supposed to do looked promising, but it got scrapped. I love the theme Doesn't Really Matter that was written and sung by janet and it was nice hearing it in the movie and soundtrack, it was a big summer hit, hitting #1 for 3 weeks. Eddie Murphy on the other hand is hilarious throughout the whole movie and he beautifully plays different roles of the Klump family, each one showing a different and humorous personality. The grandma one was my favourite. I didn't think all of the jokes in the film were funny, but there were some scenes in the movie that were childish yet extremely hilarious that had me laughing the loudest in the theater.

I think the first one is better, but if you're interested in getting to know the other Klump family members more, you may want to check this out. And also if you like janet jackson, you'll want to see this, but don't expect another role like the one she had in Poetic Justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars FUNNY!
First of all, this movie is VERY funny! Its even funnier than the first film!

Whats even better, is how much the family gets involved in this movie (Eddie Murphy plays all 7 charcters!)

You can't even tell that the family is all the same actor, they all seem different.

get this movie! its funny as hell!

1-0 out of 5 stars terribly disappointing
I, and my family, had high hopes for this film. We had really enjoyed the first Nutty Professor movie. This sequel, however, is a truly awful movie. The plot is a totally confusing mess.
The humor is missing and in its place is a huge amount of farting and cursing and potty-mouthed, potty-minded crap. The language is terrible and I really didn't want my kids to see the shots of swinging breasts and bulging erections. As a family film it is completely inappropriate. As a movie in general, it is utterly unfunny and pretty much a total bomb.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst movie EVER
I couldn't believe my eyes and ears, at the beginning, at the altar, when Eddie Murphy's head comes out of his zipper, I couldn't believe how awful it was. AND it sets the tone for the whole movie. Bad taste galore, the worst kind, and it's not the least bit funny. The family monologues aren't the worst (never heard anything unfunnier), and then of course the fart-jokes,
Really, movie-making has never sunk any lower.
I'd say this is the most vulgar thing ever seen on tv, and that's counting the Osbournes! ... Read more

The arc of Janet Jackson's career from the late 1980s to the late '90swas a story of determined growth by an artist and woman. The extent to whichJackson served as a role model for many an adolescent girl during that decade(a phenomenon illuminated on another DVD, The Rhythm Nation Compilation)speaks to the formidable yet feminine image she presented via her music andmusic videos. Design of a Decade includes 16 of her videos from 1986 to1996, taking us through Jackson's early, "don't trifle with me" attitude in the"What Have You Done for Me Lately" era, to her more rapturous, sensual makeoverin "Love Will Never Do (Without You)." Of course, this video is also a record ofsome of the most ambitious music videos ever produced, including Julien Temple'selaborate "When I Think of You," Peter Smillie's "Escapade," and Marcus Nispel'secstatic, fantastic "Runaway." --Tom Keogh ... 5-0 out of 5 stars MAGNIFICENT! Janet is terriffic in all of these videos.
This tape features the music videos for "What Have You Done for Me Lately", "Nasty","When I Think of You","Control","Let's Wait Awhile","The Pleasure Principle","Miss You Much","Rhythm Nation","Escapade","Alright","Come Back to Me", "Black Cat","Love Will Never Do(without you)", "That's The Way Love Goes","Whoops Now", and "Runaway". This video also has a Runaway documentary. I watch this video over and over and I never get tired of it. It's amazing. Janet is the BEST dancer ever. I encourage all of you to buy this video. It is a wonderful collection of Janet's greatest hits!

5-0 out of 5 stars Janet's music videos
Janet has terrific videos, I love all of them, the choreography is superb and she is a really good dancer. This is the VHS version of her greatest hits CD "Design of a Decade" and has all the songs of the album except for "The Best Things In Life Are Free" (but since Janet can't be seen in that video, it's not really missed) and "Twenty Foreplay" (which would be a great addition).

Those who miss the videos of the "janet." album should buy the VHS release "janet." which has the videos of You Want This, If, Again, Any Time Any Place and a different version of That's The Way Love Goes.

4-0 out of 5 stars design of a great career
this is a collection of music videos from janet jackson in her prime and at her creative peak. I only wish more videos from the janet album were featured and that miss you much was extended, but I know that this is representative of mostly her A&M work and barely her Virgin work. My favourite videos are nasty, control, pleasure principle and all the videos from rhythm nation as well as the multicultural runaway. Get it today and see what janet did before britney and those kids came along

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, but with a few shortcomings
I agree with the other reviewers about how essential a collection of Janet videos is. The choreography is amazing and her attention to detail rivals that of her brother. I'm giving this only four stars because it could have taken better advantage of the DVD capacity (read: more videos, please!:)

The Control videos are pretty much here in their entirety, but Rhythm Nation is where we begin the edits. I loved the extended chair sequence at the end of "Miss You Much", but it is missing here. They certainly had room for the additional 30 seconds. Come to think of it, they could have included the entire Rhythm Nation movie. Perhaps in a future release. The "Alright" video is also truncated, but even in its edited form is still long enough and enjoyable (very cool to see Cab, Cyd, and the Nicholas Brothers).

Absent from the "janet" release are "If" and "Again". Another reviewer mentioned a few other vids from this CD, but these are the only ones that stood out for me. "If" had this cool Asian underground theme and some interesting choreography, while "Again" was basically just clips from "Poetic Justice". I would rather have seen either of these videos in favor of "Whoops Now".

I'm guessing the omission of some of her later videos was to maintain consistency with the format of the Design CD (but then what is "Whoops Now" doing here?). I'm hoping a more complete retrospective is released soon, but I found this for $9 and couldn't resist. It's hard to sit still while watching these videos, they make you want to dance. :)

Early in their career: Check out JLo (from her "In Living Color" dancer days) in "That's the Way Love Goes". And of course Paula in the "Nasty" video. ... Read more

I'd say this is the most vulgar thing ever seen on tv, and that's counting the Osbournes! ... Read more

Staying relevant in the eye-candy Britney and 'N Sync era, Janet Jackson puts her dancers, costume changers, and set designers through their paces in a two-hour visual (and occasionally aural) spectacular from Hawaii on the final night of her 2001 All for You tour. For 26 songs, Janet changes flashy outfits seemingly a dozen times; backstage cameras show assistants helping the star out of one costume and into another, although the discreetness (no nudity here!) suggests it's either been pretaped or "rehearsed" at earlier shows. Still, this unique behind-the-scenes glimpse is something her rivals wouldn't show--Janet has raised the bar.

With unflagging energy--and the help of prerecorded backing tapes--Janet sates her audience with her impressive array of hits, from "What Have You Done for Me Lately" and "Nasty" to "Trust a Try" and "Together Again." There's no doubt Janet's performing instincts have been co-opted by a generation of up-and-comers, but Live in Hawaii shows Janet's not about to abdicate her throne. --Kevin Filipski ... Read more

The Rhythm Nation Compilation gathers all seven, wildly popularand somewhat influential music videos based on songs from Janet Jackson's hit1989 album, Rhythm Nation1814. With a minimum of self-congratulatory distractions, theanthology gets down to business, rolling out such memorable productions asSwordfish director Dominic Sena's "Miss You Much," shot in black andwhite and underscoring Jackson's image as an accessible, normal young woman witha lot of playful friends. "Rhythm Nation," also helmed by Sena, is stilldisarming with its vaguely martial look and feel, as well as Jackson'sthen-trademark, staccato-choppy choreography. Other highlights include thesouth-of-the-border exotica of "Escapade," the long version of directorJulien Temple's glossy "Alright" (featuring Cab Calloway, Cyd Charisse, andthe Nicholas Brothers), and the dreamy "Love Will Never Do (Without You),"shot by famed photographer Herb Ritts and introducing the more womanly, sexierJackson we know today. --Tom Keogh ...
