5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely GREAT for SNL fans and collectors!
This is one of my favorite things to watch over and over again that i never get sick of.

Before i watched this, i was all into the 90's stuff like Adam Sandler and Norm MacDonald (which is still very good!), and i always thought "The 70's stuff is so old, and the humor was so much different back then. i hate it". But after i watched this, i absolutely fell in love with the first 5 years! I've always loved Chevy Chase and Steve Martin, but this is truly some of their funniest work. Gilda Radner is such a sweetheart. It was cool when Molly Shannon and Cheri Oteri gave her a tribute, but i wish it would of been longer. Belushi is a side spliter too.

If you are an SNL fan of ANY era of the show, you'll want to pick this up! A must-have for your dvd collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Will Feed Your Fingertips to the Wolverines...
This disc boasts an impressive collection of highlights from the SNL archives, joined together by (for once) some actually funny links. Tom Hanks is the foil of a tried-and-true SNL convention--the host interrupted by audience members--that brings out the comedic best in Jon Lovitz and Christopher Walken. (By the way, if you missed this year's Walken-hosted show, be sure to catch it in rerun. It was the best of the season so far.) The show even contains some sentimental tributes to departed performers. The beauty of these is that they are all done tastefully and they are, if you are old enough to appreciate them, quite moving. The live musical performances are quite good, particularly Elvis Costello backed by the quite intent Beastie Boys. So good, in fact, that by the time this lengthy (but never long) show ends, you might not even realize that the DVD does not include the musical highlight segments that were part of the original telecast. Too bad, otherwise this would be a five-star disc. There is one segment included in the program that did not make it to air--an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the creation of a show. This may not be a disc you'll watch often, but it's an excellent sampling of what is now--gasp!--a TV institution. And that's not a put-down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Let The Beginning Throw You Off....
Don't let the beginning throw you off. Yeah, it might want to make you shoot yourself, but trust me, it gets 110% better!!! Just skip the first chapter and everything will be A-okay!

The way it works for the most part is that for every half decade or so they have a segment of SNL clips. Of course, some chapters are better then others, because from what I know, NBC was about to cancel the show in the 80's, it got so bad, but the show is chock full of classics, such as the Adam Sandler Songs, the Eddie Murphy classics (like "Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood"), and who could forget all those commercials? Some of the commercials shown are "Schmitt's Gay", "Cluckin' Chicken", and "Oops, I Crapped My Pants". There's even a "Behind the Scenes" roll which is awesome!!! Oh, I could ramble on about how great this DVD is all day!

So, if you're a dedicated SNL fan, YOU JUST CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THIS DVD!!!! It's worth every cent!

1-0 out of 5 stars Stop releasing the Best of dvd's
The studio needs to stop releasing the best of SNL and give us what we want complete seasons. Stop teasing us with this crap Best of SNL and give us the hole freaking season, so we can truely enjoy the show.

4-0 out of 5 stars How can people say that mad tvs better.
Some do. How? I don't know. But all I know is that this is hilarious. The only reason that I didn't give it all 5 stars is because of all the profanity. It seems like the ausidence started cracking up every time someone said ass. Other thsn that its a great show with really bad lanugage. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Complainers? We don't need no stinkin' complainers!"
How can you resist a movie where they throw poodles out of windows, let kids drink from fire hoses, where Conan hacks people apart because some people turned a book in late? The movie does have its slow parts, but the spoofs and skits are absolutely hilarious. I won't tell you all of them because then you won't go and rent or buy this great movie. This movie is really good if you are a Weird Al fan, like REALLY off-the-wall humor, parodies, something that can make you laugh. Some people hate this movie, but I think it's because they're trying to see it as a movie. UHF is not really trying to be a movie, it's trying to be more of a collage of parodies. Anyway, see it for yourself. There's no telling how many stomach muscles you'll burst watching this hilarious film.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK?? What's the point?
~80's music and movies always scare me but this movie has a SMALL exception. This movie is about when George Newman, a teenager with no job, ("Weird Al" Yankovic) gets permission from his uncle Harvey (Stanley Brock) to run a television station with his friend Bob (David Bowe), the really weird janitor Stanley Spadowski (Michael Richards), the television reporter wannabe Pamela Finkelstein (Fran Drescher), and a laboratory scientist from another planet named Phllo (Anthony Geary) while trying to avoid another television company owner (Kevin McCarthy) from taking over his company U-62, and turning it in to a parking lot . This movie is what I like to call a "slapstick movie" which is a move with nothing but mere jokes and gags. Many of the zany programs on the station that George runs are called "Wheel of Fish" (A cross between "Lets Make a Deal" and "Wheel of Fortune"), Raul's Wild Kingdom", "Stanley Spadowski's Clubhouse", "Fun with Dirt", "Ghandi II" and "Strip Solitare". A lot of these things just don't make sense! This movie is rated PG-13 and has Language, Adult Content, and Rude Remarks. It's kind of weird but kind of funny in an odd kind of way. Raul's Wild Kingdom was hillarious when Raul (Cliff Stephens) shakes up an ant farm and says "OHHH! They're really mad now!" and when he throws a poodle out of a three-story window because he thinks he can teach it to fly. Ghandi II was also quite funny along with "Conan the Librarian" and "Spatula City". This movie is overall in my opinion, ALRIGHT but next time MGM/UA makes a movie, don't put Weird Al in it!~

5-0 out of 5 stars Cult Classic
If you are a fan of Weird Al's parodies, this is the DVD for you. I know some people don't get it (a.k.a: Roger Ebert and some other critics). Yeah, the plot is a tad weak, but the main focus of this project was to give Al an outlet into doing parodies of movies and TV. There are many priceless gags in the movie ("Raul's Wild Kingdom" and "Ghandi II" come to mind). There is also a fabulous performance by Michael Richards (a.k.a.: Kramer from "Seinfeld") as the station's janitor turned TV star. There are also appearances by Victoria Jackson (SNL) and Fran Drescher (The Nanny).
The audio commentary is fantastic. You get to hear about what inspired some of the scenes and also what was not included in the movie. You also get to find out why the DVD wasn't released until June 4, 2002! There are deleted scenes on the DVD in the bonus material including a fantastic one of Michael Richards ad-libbing an entire scene!

3-0 out of 5 stars weird al
if you liked weird als music, youll like this movie.its very silly but loads of fun.the kids will like it.if you are worried about how cool you are all the time and cant relax then dont watch this because its a movie for people who likewhat they want.individuals and dreamers.the bad guy is this old man from a tv station who is als rival when he has to run a tv station.this movie is very very funny.the bad guy is a real pain in the ass.its definately worth watching!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST of random humor!
I think this has to be one of the funniest movies i have seen in my life! just all the random shows in between the plot of the movie just make it like a family guy/futurama show mixed in with a healthy dose of random al. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The 80's at it's finest! Not to be missed!
I saw this movie when it first came out... I"ve owned the soundtrack on tape and now on CD... I've bought the movie used from a video store when I couldn't find it new - and I hope that it will somehow get onto DVD... The movie is a must see if not a must own.. the Soundtrack is a MUST OWN for sure... one of my fave's of all time with it's ONLY problem being that it doesn't have the song "Where Is She" by Blue Future on it - if you've seen the movie, you know the song... other than that it's near perfection... another great soundtrack "The Lost Boys" ironically another Corey/Corey tagteam hit...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie for all Generations.
This movie is a great movie and I have been enchanted by it since I first saw it in the 80's. Now it is out on DVD and I still enjoy it. It is so romantic and has alot of human emotion in it. I have to also admit I used to be in love with Meredith Salenger. She is such a fine actress and Wow, what a bod. This movie has soooo much cool music in it and it appeals to all ages. The romantic part of me loves this movie and it is right up there with another romantic movie that I love, "Xanadu" with Olivia Newton John. Corey Feldman might not have been the best actor ever, but he was excellent in this and the Academy Awards should have noticed. (Like they ever vote for anthing that REALLY deserves it). The rest of the crew made an excellent movie and the dirctor and editor did a first rate job. What else did the director go on to do?

Pick up the sound track and you will love it. I listen to it all the time and the inclusion of the Van Morrison hit "into the mystic" sets the mood for any situation. Beautiful movie and all time classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite movie of all time so far
although a hard movie to follow at times, its very entertaining and i know it word for word.i have probably watched it 50 times or so.its not for everyone, but if you like 80s movies about romantic comedy with wild twists you will love this one.its worth a buy for sure, and i suggest getting it new ,for only a few dollars more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dinger lives / An 80's gem
One of my favorite films so defining of the 80's. A classic teen angst high school movie but with imagination. I think Corey Feldman & Corey Haim made a great team in this. This film makes you want to go back to the 80's as a teenager in high school, watching it nowadays. I completely related to Corey Haims character Dinger. Dinger and Bobby are best friends Bobby falls for Lainie the hottest girl in school and has to convince her that she loves him before the night's over but here's the story in an accident Bobby switches his body with the old man next store living life thru his eyes and vice versus. The same thing with Lainie and the old man's wife. A romantic comedy with a twist. Pay attention to the characters and their bond. A great film about friendship & relationships in high school. An essential to collection for anyone who grew up in 80's cinema. I own the DVD and the soundtrack is great too.

4-0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Stars; Could've Been Better
When Phil Hartman was murdered by his wife, he left behind something that nobody could take from him - his legacy. As possibly "Saturday Night Live's" most versatile star, he was a major influence on later, equally great castmembers Will Ferrell and Darrell Hammond (who is the only castmmebrs whose Bill Clinton impersonation matched up to Hartman). As always, when he died, Lorne and company decided it was time to put together a tribute show as they did for Chris Farley. The resulting "The Best Of Phil Hartman" was mixed at best.

The first half is hilarious. Here, he gest to show up his versatillity in such roles as Frank Sinatra ("The Sinatra Group"), Bill Clinton ("Clinton At McDonald's"), Peter Graves ("Discover The World Of Science"), Phil Donahue ("Donahue"), and "Barbara Bush (don't know name of sketch, but features Nancy Reagan (Jan Hooks) trying to take back the White House). Also, there's a great montage of his impressions. He became so well known for playing Bill Clinton, people forget that his repetoire included Ted Kennedy, Andy Griffith, Telly Savalas, Michael Caine and even Jesus. Also, there's his infamous "Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer" and one, the "Weekend Update' "All Drug Olympics".

But after this, the dvd falters. While "Cooking With The Anal Retentive Chef" "Succinctly Speaking", and the touching closer "Love Is A Dream" are worth viewing, the second montage (don't know what it's about), "On Broadway", "Ann Boleyn" and "Robot Repair" rank among the worst "SNL" skecthes ever.

Is this dvd worth viewing? Yes. But is it perfect? By all means, no. How could it have been better? First, they could've taken out the entire second half (with the eexception of "Anal Retentive Chef", "Succinctly Speaking", and "Love Is A Dream") and replaced it with the "Sinatra Duets" sketch, another Clinton one, and a montage of his voiceovers. I think Phil Hartman deserves a best - of, volume 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of "The Best of" videos so far!
The opening credits for this video say "Saturday Night Live Remembers Phil Hartman." How could anybody NOT remember Phil Hartman? With so many impersonations and characters, I'm sure it was very difficult for the creators of this video to pick out "The Best of Phil Hartman." The following skits and impersonations are included in this 83 minute video:
Cold Opening - Admiral Stockdale
The Sinatra Group
Compulsion
Clinton At McDonald's
Donahue
Discover The World of Science
Barbara Bush
Ronald Reagan
"The Tonight Song" with Steve Martin
Governor Mario Cuomo
Senator Edward Kennedy
Church Chat
Visit From Jesus Christ
Charlton Heston
Johnny Cash
Michael Caine
Telly Savalas
Burt Reynolds
Star Trek
Andy Griffith
"Dadly Duties"
Ed McMahon
Unfrozen Cave Man Lawyer
Weekend Update Commentary: The All-Drug Olympics
Drama Class
Johnny O'Connor
Cooking With the Anal Retentive Chef
Succinctly Speaking
Encounter With Mr. Cherrywood
Sassy
Army Base
Sprockets Dating Game
On Broadway
Robot Repair
Anne Boleyn
Love Is A Dream

I would say 30 out of the 36 sketches on this tape are very funny. It's incredibly saddening that Hartman is no longer alive to share more laughs with us. This tape is a great tribute to the times that he was. I dare you fans and new viewers to try not to laugh as you view this truly great tribute to a truly comedic genius.

2-0 out of 5 stars Should have been better...
I read all the reviews of this, and i found the one extremely negative one and figured it was just some moron that didn't know what he was talking about. After buying this and watching it, i realized that he was way closer to the truth than any of the other reviewers. This dvd contains about 4 funny sketches, tops. I remember phil hartman being way funnier than he is portrayed on this dvd, and i have a theory as to why this one stinks as bad as it does.
-Phil Hartman is an extremely funny and talented actor, but for some reason he was written in as a funny "side guy" in a lot of sketches, and the ones where he is the main character, he is usually doing an impression of someone or it is just plain boring, for whatever reason. Therefore, to see Phil Hartman in his top form, you would be better off buying Adam Sandler's, Mike Myers', or Chris Farley's dvds, because theirs probably have all the sketches in which we remember Phil Hartman being so funny. The only sketches left by the time they got around to making Hartman's dvd were the ones we would have been better off forgetting. The only things worth watching on this dvd are "cooking with the anal retentive chef" and "the all drug olympics," which is about 10 seconds long. I hate to write a review like this because i really loved phil hartman, but it is a shame that i would rather watch the "bad" ones on the will ferrell dvd than the "good" ones on this dvd. Sorry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Starts Out Good But Falters At The End
For 8 years, Pil Hartman kept America laughing as one of (if not the ) most versatile castmembers on "Saturday Night Live". Judging by his long line of work, it would be hard to find just 20 sketches that would qualify as his best. In 1998, shortly after he was murdered by his wife Brynne, Lorne Michaels and Company came up with "Saturday Night Live: The Best Of Phil Hartman", which was soon released on dvd. The results were okay at best.

The first half is hilarious. "The Sinatra Group" is my favorite, especiially the Sinead O'Connor (Jan Hooks) jokes. Also worth a view are "Clinton At McDonald's" and "Discover The World Of Science With Peter Graves", in which Hartman plays the screen veteran as a bumbling idiot (so gold is long and thin like, say, Kareem Abdul Jabaar?). Best of all, there's a montage of his impressions. So many people watch him for his Bill Clinton that they forget his repitoire ranged from Ted Kennedy to Burt Reynolds to Jesus. After the "All Drug Olympics" sketch, the dvd falters a bit, but enjoys a resurgance of hilarity with "Cooking With The Anal Retentive Chef". But skecthes like "Robot Repair" and "On Broadway With Brenda Krouse" just weren't as good as I expected. The final sketch is "Love Is A Dream", a short film with an ending that will leave you misty - eyed.

Overall, not a bad set, but it could have been a better sketch. For instance, where was the sketch where he's Frank Sinatra and he's recording his "Duets" album and he doesn't like his partners?

1-0 out of 5 stars Have you clowns even watched this yet??
First off, the 1 star is for the 10 minutes of extras. They are the only material half funny on this entire DVD. I sat in total shock as I watched the first chapter, then the next, and the next. I kept saying, this is going to be halarious, you just wait. It was very painful to watch. For one of the most talented actors to come out of SNL, they picked the absolutely worst episodes to show. The opening segment was the most boring, unfunny scene he's ever done. What were they thinking??I know there are many of you out there right now saying, "hey, he's absolutely right, it sucked!". Maybe that's why it took so long to release his compilation; Maybe all the good episodes are still tied up in his estate litigation, or.. someone maybe couldn't make up their mind on what was funny and what wasn't. The people that put this DVD together should be taken out back and stoned by Phil's true fans. If you want a great example of showcasing a talent, watch Chris Farley's SNL DVD......You'll laugh yer ass off start to finish. All I can say is I wish I could get my money back because this was absolutely terrible!!! I hope I can get $5 for it at my spring garage sale, but I seriously doubt it! Shame on SNL for releasing this goop. Even Will Ferrel's wasn't as polished as Farleys or Meyer's or even Sandlers DVD!! No wonder SNL sucks now, it has run it's course and their compilations get worse and worse. You'll agree, the best ones were the first ones....right?

5-0 out of 5 stars True love just won't die ¿ no matter how hard you try!
Watch this with someone who knows you well enough to appreciate that awful, embarrassing snort-laugh you have when you can't catch your breath. This movie has put a nice twist on the jealous wife who wants to murder her cheating husband. Who'd think it could be funny! The characters aren't polite or glossy, they're down-to-earth and hilariously direct. Watching these actors chew up the scenery is a treat. Tracy Ulman really does nearly love Kevin Kline to death, enthusiastically assisted by loved ones Joan Plowright and River Phoenix and two hopelessly high hit men, William Hurt and Keanu Reeves, who can't (and never will) get it right. Everyone concerned does a terrific job and you may just find yourself liking these unlikely but endearing characters. Just like Joey and Rosalee, there's no accounting for what you love-you just do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Far Under-Rated Comedy..
I saw this movie shortly after it's release on HBO in the earliy '90s. It has a full fledge cast that just make it superb to watch. Kevin Kline as Joey the Pizzaria Owner, who just can't get enough women, and is soo fun loving. Tracy Ullman plays his wife Rosalee, who loves her husband soo much, she would rather kill him than share him with any other woman. Joan Plowright plays Rosalee's Mother, who has a nack for mechanical work and it's nothing for her to be working on a carbortor at the Dinner Table at a restaraunt while the family is dinnig out. River Phoenix plays the boy who works at the Pizzaria, and is deeply in love with Rosalee, so much so,that he is willing to aid her in knocking off her husband, only after the futile attempts from Rosalee and her Mom. After he fails, they call in a couple of bargin basement junkies,(William Hurt & Keanu Reeves) from the local tavern to finish the job, but even they can't seem to pull it off. It's just one good laugh after another. I wore out my VHS Tape and then got the Laser Disc. I was happy to discover that it has been released on DVD!

Also, I believe that this is based on a true story as well!!

4-0 out of 5 stars SITCOM-STYLE COMEDY OF MISADVENTURES WITH APPEALING CAMEOS..
I take off one star for the somewhat slight theme based on the true but quaint counter-intuitive romance of a couple whose marriage was revitalized after the wife almost succeeded in murdering her husband.

But it comes with some brilliant cameos from some big names: Kline as an Italian pizza shop owner, William Hurt and Keanu Reeves as spaced out druggies, Plowright a staunch mother with a thick Yugoslavian accent and extremely funny, and an absolutely pivotal wife's role played by Ulman, who finds the stubborn vindictiveness inside her character, sunny and trusting one moment and unforgiving and brutal the next.

It's not an astounding comedy and some gags are hit-and-miss, but as a saving grace the film is well-paced. The DVD I got features trailers for three other movies (go figure) but I still recommend this one as a decent rental.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, I Love You All to Death!
There are some films of which you should never be critical on details but should just sit back and enjoy what the film gives you. gI Love You to Deathh is the best one of such kind. Oh, yes, having watched it for many, many times, it never fails to give me fresh bliss every time I watch it!

Why this film is so excellent is obvious: it has a shiny set of brilliant, extraordinary and adorable characters that are played by the gorgeous-like-chandelier actors. My personal favorite of all these stars is, of course, Marlon, the a-bit-moronic-but-lovable drug addict turned gtoo-sweet-to-killh killer, played by Keanu Reeves with drastic hair-do and off-beat fashion sense.

And, you got to see this Joey (Kevin Kline), the womaniser pizza shop owner, who broke his faithful wife, Rosalie (Tracey Ullman)fs heart so devastatingly that she decides to kill him. One problem here is, he is not a human! Seriously! He works 14 to 15 hours a day, 7 days a week, never sleeps more than two or three hours a night. And still has surplus energy (or hormones, maybe?) to go out with a different woman every night! Personally, I would like to kill him just because he eats like an excessively greedy elephant yet gain no weight at all!! That ability alone is intolerable for all women, not to mention his outrageously frequent adultery. But, still, Rosalie loves him so much that she wants him to die but not to be hurt!? !

To see other countless jewel moments that make you burst to laugh, smile, mad and moved, and to witness how on earth you can ever kill this monstrously superhuman-like cheeky Italian guy, you definitely got to see this yourself.

Everyone becomes happy in the end including ones who have been watching. Once I tried it when I was extremely depressed and found myself still be able to laugh and love. For that quality, gI Love You to Deathh is undoubtedly irreplaceable treasure to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic finally arrives on DVD!!
I've been waiting for years for this to come out on DVD. I won't recap the story, because most people have already heard it. Just want to say that the DVD version offers both wide-screen and full-screen versions. There's nothing in the way of extras, which was a little disappointing--I would have loved to have seen something about the real-life couple that inspired this movie. But I was just so excited to get my hands on this DVD, it's one of those movies that not many people heard of, but don't forget once they've seen it. And you'll never be able to take Keanu Reeves seriously again, no matter how many times you see him in the Matrix!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars CONNERY,HOFFMAN, BRODERICK...OH MY!!!
And Sidney Lumet behind the camera? This had all the earmarks of greatness but FAMILY BUSINESS is what its principal characters are: under achievers. But what great fun! This is Connery chewing scenery ( dinner at Vito's, the prison van, the Pee Wee Grogan story). Vincent Patrick, who wrote the screenplay from his own novel, knows NYC street people and the landscape is genuine. There's worse things to waste 100 minutes on that this.

4-0 out of 5 stars SEE IT!!!!!!
Being a fan of gorgeous and sexy voiced actor Matthew Broderick, I was so excited when it came out on cable that I saw it. Matthew was very convincing (but should have taken his glasses off), Dustin Hoffman was excellent but Sean Connery stole the show. Somehow, I would have liked someone younger than Dustin to have the part of the father, he seemed too old. I would have liked Danny de Vito to add some humor or Harrison Ford! But the movie was great!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars I Hope The Kid Got 20 Years
This movie, which had a great cast but just didn't have the right chemistry, glorified to some extent the exploits of a family of thieves -- people who break the law by stealing money and goods from others, thus robbing people of their produce/property and generally damaging society. Sean Connery's character at one point had a lot of nerve, telling Matthew Broderick's con-man girl friend that she was a "parasite." Talk about a frog calling somebody ugly. Matthew's father, Dustin Hoffman, properly did not want to be involved in the caper that Matthew concocted, did not want his son to follow in his own formerly dishonest thieving footsteps, and was devastated when Son was caught during a break-in. The kid deserved to have the book thrown at him, and be locked away, which is the only way we should treat the lowlifes who steal from others.

Of course, it's only a movie and fictional exploits of this nature are interesting to watch, but problems arise when films about crooks inspire the unenlightened among us to become crooks. Or get elected to congress and start taxing people, same sort of thievery.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Caper keeps terrific suspense!
Sean Connery, Dustin Hoffman, and Mathew Broderick play profession-thief grandfather, conservative father, and innovative-genius son. When genius son invites Gramps in on a hiest, Daddy gets upset and vows to do anything to stop them. But the sins of the father, inherited from the grandfather, make piety a difficult sell. Terrific crime caper with many unexpected twists. ... Read more

The kid-friendly Santa vs. the Snowman began as a 1997 animated television special, then made a leap to the biggest movie screens--IMAX--in the world (in 3-D, no less), and now has come full circle to DVD with its extra, simulated perspective and deep focus intact. (3-D glasses, which come with the disc, are required.) An animator's lark, Santa concerns a battle between Mr. Claus and a scheming snowman who tries to overtake Santa's toy-making and Christmas Eve delivery operation. A full-scale war erupts (there are some scary images here, particularly of a snowman writhing to his fiery death), though the violence is mitigated by clever quotes from movie and animation classics, including Toy Story and the stop-motion television perennial Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town. The original 2-D geometric planes are artfully reinvented to achieve an exciting depth. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice 80's Feel Good Comedy
i first watched this film back in college when it first came out and loved it then. Even now i have the dvd and yes, its dated, but so what? it's still a fun nice little film that raises a smile. Lea Thompson is believable and honest in a light yet human comedy so if you're looking for 90 mins or so of escapism then give it a view! You won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie- Wrong Title. Dice is Wonderful !
This movie is funny, romantic, silly, intelligent.Too bad the title is so wrong for it as this movie is not about casual sex but the desire for a real relationship. Andrew Dice CLay is wonderful as the "Vin Man" who is really a loving man who just wants to meet the right woman. Hollywood overlooked Andrew Dice Clay's perfect performance & still has not put him in another excellent role that fit him so well & at this point his looks aren't what they were in this 1987 romantic comedy. Victoria Jackson & Lea Thompson are just right in their roles as love-seeking women in the latter 1980's of safe sex- not just to avoid STDS such as the Aids disease but to also avoid getting emotionally involved with the wrong guy- and to avoid getting hurt yet again. This is an excellent comedy on dvd although it has NO extra features so maybe in the future there will be a Special edition as this is already it's 2nd time on dvd.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie For A "Just The Girls" Night!
This movie makes me laugh everytime I watch it! Lea and Victoria have not been in any movies recently, but this movie will make you wish they were! If you are looking for a smile, good laugh, and romance---this is the movie you want to see! Every guy in the film reminds you of a guy you have met before; and every conversation in the film reminds you of one you have had with your friends before as well! As a DVD, it rates OK because there is no behind the scences information, etc. I wish there was because every so often it appears as if they cut out a small bit of a scene---and I am the type who want to know what it was! I rate this movie as an excellent one to see with your friends---it will bring up memories you will die laughing about!

5-0 out of 5 stars More than expected
Well, I have to start out by saying I'm a man so usually I dont dig on these movies. But I heard The DiceMan was going to be in it so I figured i would give it a shot. It turns out I love this movie.

Other thsn that its a great show with really bad lanugage. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Addiction of Risk Taking . . .
A gambling addict and a double-parking live-on-the-edge risk taker (who is no good at all at picking up women) luck out and escape from a life-threatening conflict with the mob (the addict's addicted father owes money), immediately come to their senses, and "change their ways." Do you believe it? This fantasy ags risk takers on, as evidenced by one review below.

Still, Molly Ringwald is adorable as Randy the risk-taking museum guide, and even though Robert Downey was a much more convincing (and appealing) pick up artist as the shoe salesman in "Only You," I gave this movie 3 stars. Dennis Hopper is quite convincing as Flash the lush-gambler-dad, and some of my favorite stars made cameo appearances.

If taken as a serious movie, only the fiction of reform is flawed. Everything else hangs nicely. Jack (Downey) is co-dependently taking care of his grandmother, who is addicted to her own kind of risk, and as she makes a sudden recovery and needs him less, he switches to Molly, who is constantly propping up her drunk, gambler father, while sharing at least one of his vices. Molly resists the new relationship until her dad shows signs of reforming. Of course she'll need a new problem.

Feel like taking a risk? The movie is cheap enough. Give it a shot. But if you get in trouble with the mob, find some other way to get out of it!

4-0 out of 5 stars cute movie
This movie isn't one of Downey's best, but it's a pretty good movie.Especially for fans of Robert Downey Jr. or Molly Ringwald. Robert still has a sorta chubby, youthful face and a gap between his teeth(which i don't think is real). He and Molly Ringwald shine through the movie. Very sweet and funny and romantic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pick this Film Up!
Before his troubles with the law, Robert Downey, Jr. starred in this charming comedy vehicle as Jack, a schoolteacher, who knows more pick up lines than a politician on Capitol Hill. During one of his frequent visits to one of New York City's many night club, he meets Randy Jensen (Ringwald)a museum guide at the American Museum of Natural History whom he becomes fascinated with.

During a short period, Jack discovers that he has met his match in Randy due to her hard-to-get attitude. However, due to her father's trouble with the mob, Randy must find a way to clear her father out of the debt he acquired from gambling. This is where Jack enters, and after an unsuccessful streak of luck in Atlantic City, Jack risks everything to help Randy out. Jack the player gives up his game and pursuit of women all for the name of love.

This is one of my all-time favorite romantic comedies. The beauty and ambiance of New York City in its' P.G. (Pre-Giuliani) days are memorable, especially for me as a native. Keep an eye out for cameos by Vanessa Williams, Victoria Jackson, Danny Aiello, and Dennis Hopper as Randy's father. Director James Toback ("Two Girls & a Guy"; "Black and White") does an excellent job of capturing Downey's immense talent on screen, and Ringwald in one of her post-Brat pack films also shines. This was one of her final films before she moved to France for a few years.

If you are in a mood for a great romantic comedy try this comedy as well as "Trick". Both films were filmed in New York and offer the audience with a charming storyline and memorable characters. Overall, the "Pick Up Artist" is an excellent film that will capture your heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie!!
I remcommend this movie to evryone. It's funny and romantic. Robert Downey, Jr. and Molly Ringwald make a cute couple in this movie.

2-0 out of 5 stars fairly average film
say this film the other night&while the cast was interesting&certain things worked overall the story itself never quite jived with all the Folks involved within the film.things seemed a bit off.Dan Aykroyd was pretty good here as was Walter Matthau but the film just didn't move me enough.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Trip"-ped and Fallen...
Aside from the scene featuring Dan Aykroyd's character fielding calls on a psychology call-in radio show, I found The Couch Trip a rather dull little attempt at comedy. To beat a hackneyed cliché even further to death, I considered it to be somewhat funny in some parts, just not ha-ha funny. Once again, Aykroyd dusts off his smarmy-smart-"aleck"-with-deadpan-delivery-of-caustic-barbs that you all know so well from just about every other 80s comedy flick he's ever appeared in, and runs it even further into the ground here. Throw in less-than-inspired performances by Walter Matthau and Charles Grodin, and a totally blah cameo by Chevy Chase, and you have something you can fast-forward through to get to the good part that I mentioned at the beginning of the paragraph (about a half-hour in). Enjoy...

4-0 out of 5 stars Case of Miller's, Ice Cold
Dan Akroyd's comedy movie career has been anything but consistent. He seems to tackle as many bad roles (My Stepmother Is An Alien) as he does great (Neighbors). I'm going to go on record and say that this is his best work since his SNL stint and his Belushi film pairings. Yes, it's totally stupid. Yes, it's one of those late 80's "switched identity" movies that every studio made, and it's got Donna Dixon - one of the worst actors on earth. But, it's one of those movies that requires many viewings because it's just that good. A funny story, a great score, and a hilarious Chevy Chase cameo. The only disappointment with this coming to DVD is that it lacks any features. Well, at least MGM brought it to DVD. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars a far-fetched plot, an Aykroyd ego-trip, but great support .
THE COUCH TRIP is a movie with a far-fetched plot, with an Aykroyd ego-trip, but with great support. "I did not realize," my wife said, "that Dan Aykroyd only plays one role in every film, the supercilious social misfit who is going to be in trouble when he has to quit acting like a teen-ager." Having said that, my wife, who points out matters like acting ability; she said and I agree that the support of Walter Matthau and Charles Grodin kept this feature on the funny track. The far-fetched plot has one of those incredible twists that you simply can't resist; the mental patient who out-psychs the Psychiatrists. But, thanks to Director Michael Ritchie it is a well managed far-fetched plot. It was performed as well as that other Aykroyd film with a weird plot, "Trading Places." I laughed and was entertained by this flic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent film
I could not remember the name of this film at first, only the plot and the superb performance by Dan Aykroyd as the leading actor. This film works regardless of what some critics say. It enabled Aykroyd to show just how suited he is to the role of comedy actor.A truely entertaining film, well worth viewing. The role of the other actors is well matched with the leading role and also the leading lady should have gone on to make more films. ... Read more

Never have the 1980s felt so painfully time-warped. This 1988 movie, which was directed by Geneviève Roberts and adapted by Wendy Goldman and JudyToll from their stage play, is proof as to why we've rarely heard their namesagain. Casual Sex? is an oxymoron of a title that chronicles the plight oftwo best-friends-since-childhood who are suffering from celibacy in theAIDS-addled '80s. One, Stacy (Lea Thompson), misses the easy promiscuity of the past though she longs for a guy who is a true friend. Melissa (Victoria Jackson from Saturday Night Live) has only had sex with two men--the secondof whom was her fiancé, and she longs for her first orgasm. When they decideto take a holiday to the Oasis Spa in order to find some nice guys, they havelittle notion that they're about to find the wrong Mr. Right(s). Combine thetired premise with some asides to the screen (that probably worked better onstage) and a couple of role-playing fantasies, and Casual Sex? is proof that amovie on this topic might be written by women, but it still might not have anything new orgroundbreaking to reveal. Casual Sex? ultimately pairs one of itsprotagonists with comic Andrew Dice Clay, who plays a Jersey thug named "TheVin Man," and it's embarrassing to watch him mug his way through the film. With such lines as "You and I have more in common now that we're both afraid ofsex" and "Not being attracted to anybody scares me more than AIDS," viewerswill wonder if these two have a brain in their heads at all. They ultimatelycome across as less than enlightened about sex and love and seem--along withthe movie itself--more than a little desperate. --Paula Nechak ... Read more

Who wants to be a star? Who has what it takes? How do they think up all that funny stuff?!? For every comedian that you see knockin' 'em dead on Jay Leno or the Letterman Show, there are thousands more who battle each week...not for the national spotlight but for survival, five minutes at a time, on the stage of comedy clubs, roadway dinners or hole-in-the-wall bars across America. These are the next generation of star comedians, and their stories are central to understanding what it takes to make it big. "Open Mic" is a revealing look behind the veil of Hollywood's glamour into the competitive and crazy world of stand-up comedy. Featuring comedy performances and interviews from some of today's hottest comedians, this is the breakout film that proves: dying is easy...comedy is hard! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Decent documentary but definitely not a Chappelle comedy
If you think you're getting a Dave Chappelle stand-up comedy video with "OPEN MIC", then think again. This is a behind-the-scenes documentary about the often unfunny business of trying to make it as a stand-up comedian. The producers have done a credible job in presenting interviews with a dozen or so comedians and wanna-be's.But there's not many laughs in what seems to be a very cut-throat business.Yes, Dave Chappelle is one of the interviewees, sans humor. But personally, I found the somber observations of Chappelle to be revealing and potentially insightful to the "real man behind the mask" which otherwise is seldomly seen (if ever) for Chappelle.Director Jason Dudek seems talented and promising. ...
