"Harvard Man", on the other hand, has a modicum of style, plot, and intelligence behind it. It doesn't really work in the final analysis - not because of any failings of the acting, which is mostly excellent (although I just can't overcome my aversion to Joey Lauren Adams' squeaky voice), but because the movie doesn't quite hit the pitch of danger that I felt it needed to sustain the drama. Toback, however, does compelling things with sequencing, flash forwards and back, and with camerawork, split-screen and so on, and the dialogue is mostly fine. The lighting has a nice grainy amber texture to it and the soundtrack is a fun mix of hip-hop and classical. Grenier in the lead does well, Stolz and Gayheart are great, and Sarah Michelle - and yes, I do have a slight bias - proves again that she has excellent range. As well as being a cutie-patootie. "Scooby Doo" and all is fine, but please, SMG, pick a project that will demonstrate your dramatic chops to the non-believers out there! I'd love to see her do work on the big screen as fine as that in "The Body" or "Innocence" in BtVS...
Back in Kansas, a tornado destroys the home of Alan's parents, and he is determined to get the one hundred thousand dollars needed for them to rebuild. In steps Cindy with a plan to make a killing off a sports bet; all Alan has to do is throw the big game against Dartmouth. Soon, the FBI is nosing around, everybody sort of panics, hope rises in the viewer that at least one of these dreadful characters will die, and then a pretty impossible if not ludicrous ending is thrown together at the end. You don't really even care how bad the conclusion is because you are just glad the film is finally over. I don't think I've ever seen a movie go to such lengths to annoy its audience. Almost every scene features what I would call stop gaps; every few seconds, the film seems to jump a few frames for no reason whatsoever; this is a short-term technique that should be used sparingly, but the director of Harvard Man shot the entire movie this way, and it made me want to scream. Then there is the music; it's just awful, and even worse it is constant and far too loud most of the time. I guess a lot of it is supposed to sound Italian or something, even though the Mafia bit is not that important to the film. The inclusion of Ray Allen, an actual basketball player, in the movie also makes no sense. When Allen's character talks to Grenier, both of them seem to be in a race to see who can say his lines the fastest, and Allen tries so hard not to look like a professional basketball player that he ends up looking just as bad as everyone around him on the court. Just when you think things can't possibly get any worse, we are taken along for an extended LSD trip in which all the voices the character hears building up inside his head assault our own ears as well in a rising crescendo. This, in conjunction with all the other problems, qualifies this film as pure and utter torture. I have no idea why Sarah Michelle Gellar chose to participate in Harvard Man, but it almost has to be a decision she now regrets.
If you go into this movie expecting to see a lot of Sarah Michelle Geller (henceforth called SMG), you will be grossly dissapointed. She doesn't have that big of a role in this film. I went into the movie with an open mind, and tried to ignore the really annoying scenes in the beginning with slow frame rates and jerky camera movements, plus hearing 2 songs at once, overtop of commentary. But even though the beginning is very annoying, the rest of the movie is very good. I don't need to give a rundown of the plot, but I will say it takes a bit of understanding and intelligence to be able to take in all that is happening and not be overly confused. I personally really enjoyed the movie, and can't understand how all of these negative reviewers didn't like it at all. In my opinion, it is a must buy. ... Read more | |

Based on the novel by George Dawes Green (who also wrote the screenplay), THE CAVEMAN'S VALENTINE tells the story of Romulus Ledbetter (played effectively by Samuel L. Jackson), a mentally ill cave-dwelling man. One day, he discovers a dead body just outside his living space, causing him to immediately embark on a search to find the killer. It doesn't take long before you realize that you are not watching a run-of-the-mill murder mystery. Instead of bombarding you with pointless car chases and noisy special effects, THE CAVEMAN'S VALENTINE focuses on the demons inside Ledbetter's mind. This is represented through a series of highly stylized hallucinations and flashbacks. The film also explores the strained relationship between Ledbetter and his daughter, Lulu (Aunjanue Ellis of MEN OF HONOR). Their situation is further exacerbated by the fact that Lulu is a cop involved in the murder investigation. Simply put, there is no shortage of character conflict nor eye candy here. The dialog also crackles in the film. The best line is spoken by Tamara Tunie (the narrator on EVE'S BAYOU), who plays the role of Sheila, Lulu's mother. Written by an (uncredited) Lemmons, the line is sure to elicit a response from fans of Terry McMillan and similar novelists. Overall, THE CAVEMAN'S VALENTINE is an intriguing character study which includes a touching father-daughter relationship. This comes at the expense of gripping "edge of your seat" suspense, but don't let this keep you from experiencing this rich and complex film. Amelia Vincent's cinematography and Terilyn A. Shropshire's editing are first-rate. Terence Blanchard's score is seamless. (These three also collaborated with Lemmons on EVE'S BAYOU.) If you're a fan of typical summer movies that seem to care more about style over substance, you'll probably be better off to look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you've grown weary of loud thrillers with formulaic plots, you'll really appreciate this film. Check it out.
There is a short cast and crew bio that is pretty nice and of course the director's commentary.

Liam Neeson is nowhere to be found, but Darkman's downtrodden and sympathetic character is still as strong as ever. The film is filled with the kind of action, drama, little comic touches and occasional surreal images which made the first film a classic, and Durant is a genuinely intimidating villain who dominates his every scene.

When the bratty son from next door ruins Lyle's window he pays the family a very scary visit. This segment made no sense whatsoever. We were all geared up to see real action when Sheen grabs the knife and peddles it in front of the boy's face. But the supposed-frightening scene turns silly. Lyle just leaves claiming he has to check his mail. It was a cheap trick to get the audience's mouth watering. Later that night Lyle sneaks into their home and holds them hostage with a gun. He wants to play Russian Roulette. How original! Okay this movie has some chilling moments. It's not boring but at times silly. The way the neighbors act towards Lyle isn't realistic at all. Anyone else would have called the cops the moment he stomped into their house. Just because he leaves on his own the first time made it all right? Please. The father was the most pitiful role in the film. He didn't do anything but get the heck beaten out of him. This film is lame to the T. Charlie Sheen does a decent job but hits the planet of overacting big time. Mare Winningham is okay. The kids were cute and cuddly. Minor characters like Dawnn Lewis and Cliff from Cheers moved the story along. This movie was too short for my taste. I would have liked to see the reason behind Lyle's insanity. I couldn't buy that he went crazy just because his wife took his son away. That didn't do it for me. If you like exciting movies, you may like Under Pressure. It doesn't make sense all the time and the characters do stupid things but it's better than serving jury duty. You may realize Sheen's scarier than you ever thought he could be.

The point of this movie is not to be a fictional movie but some sort of instruction video for those who are left behind after the rapture that some Christians believe is coming. The fictional elements of the movie are interrupted by scenes where Pastor John Hagee declares that this, in fact, will happen, becaus the bible tells us it will, and when it does, you better be a Christian and be saved, and don't trust the evil European politician that will become some kind of world president and say he's the Messiah, because he's really the Anti-Christ. I wouldn't recommend anyone to see this movie, and certainly not to spend their money on it. If you think you need an instruction video about what to do when the end is near and that the televangelists who made this movie needs more money than they already have - go ahead and buy it, but don't say I didn't warn you.

The story is intriguing and handled well. It is somewhat predictable, but there are a few interesting plot twists, a good deal of violence, and plenty of car chases and action sequences. The ending was rather unfulfilling but not terrible. The film was written and directed by Harley Cokliss, whose prior experience includes mostly TV credits. Cokliss' direction was straightforward and unremarkable, much like the desert he was shooting. The acting of the three leads was good, particularly Liotta, who has some excellent performances on his resume (Copland, Goodfellas). He has a knack for making the bad guy seem likeable, and that was the case again here. Gloria Reuben also gave a good performance as Vicky, though it was a pretty minor role. Armin Mueller-Stahl is always strong in supporting roles and he was particularly good here as the heavy. I rated this film a 6/10. Good acting, engaging story and adequate direction. Add one or two points if you like guy flicks.
