Albert Brooks writes, directs, produces and stars this comedy about a Hollywood writer who -- as everybody says-- has lost his Edge. Advised by a friend who is very succesfull in the business, he meets The Muse, played by Sharon Stone. But far different from the simple Greek entities, she likes expensive clothes and hotels, she has many extravagant desires and charges for her inspiration. Undoubtly her attitudes and advices will change not only the writer's life but also his wife's. Don't expect something dark or mindy; this is a very light film. But this is very most of its charm lies. And, in Sharon Stone. She hasn't been as beautiful as in this movie for many years. She is the heart and soul of the story. She was born to play this character; there would never be a muse as amusing as she. And to make things better, she has a good timing for comedies. She uses all her sex symbol status to make her character sensual without being vulgar. The other players are fine. Jeff Bridges is particularly funny as Brooks's friend. Many industry insders, as Martin Scorsese and Rob Reiner, also pop up in some scenes, playing some of the muse's protégés. Andie MacDowell is not bad but she has been better before, but her character allows her some transformation. Albert Brooks is a good comediant and he deliviries fine here. Brooks's script sounds very resenteful with the big studios and their system. But his critics to them is as not acid as they could be. Actually, they taste much like an piece of cake that went off than bile as they actually should be to make this a much better movie-- but they are critcs anyway. Some of them are too clichéd, for one, the studio executive who turns to be Satan itself. I suggest you to take a look at this muse. You may find some good ideas here and there. Brooks himself may actually have been helped by a muse during the procution of this film -- but not all the time.
It's Andie that strikes gold first through the presence of Sarah, leading to comic angst from her husband - and perhaps no one has as much angst as Albert Brooks. Cameo appearances by a number of Hollywood characters playing themselves help to keep your interest through whatever slow spots might bog things down at times. But this is a lovely comedy that will give you enjoyment throughout.
Both Brooks and his wife (Andie MacDowell) seem "inspired" by Stone's presence. MacDowell starts an extremely successful cookie baking business, and Brooks comes up with new ideas for a comedy script. The plot hobbles along, and an inevidable twist towards the end is the final slap in the face for those who had just unwisely invested an hour and a half of life they'll never get back. A luke-warm Elton John theme song does nothing to rescue this lemon. Have another look at the FUNNY "Mother" and forget "The Muse".** ... Read more

In this movie we have a young scientist who is raising fake funds for an Atlantis mission, worries that he didn't sell enough books to cover the cost of the press conference, but owns a billion-dollar sub. After being taken in by some seductive decoys, he is convinced to look into the destruction of an undersea base (located under a drilling platform). The investigation takes his sub to its depth limit. Enter coordinated shark attack. Soon, ala James Bond, said scientist finds himself aboard a secret sub where they have been developing the attack sharks for the past 20 years. He and his sidekick (a brainy, busty, oceanographer) baffle the crew with bluster before having to run for their lives. Eventually we get to a cheesy ending involving reunited families, amazing discoveries, and credibility thrown out the window. There are some odd bits to this film. One is the offshore drilling platform. At what should be where the shaft meets the seabed, there is an installation that looks like an underwater city (mistake or unexplained secret base? My guess is the film makers didn't know anything about offshore drilling). There is also the shark tank. It is in the floor of the research lab with open water. It also extends up in front of the lab so than an impressive window can be opened into it. I shudder to think of the air pressure required to pull off this feat. Still, there are some nifty shark attacks, a dead whale, cool subs, one of the stupidest rescues ever (it involves a raft and you have to see it to believe it), evil military, atoning scientists, a brainy busty oceanographer, and an amazing discovery. Grade A cheese!
However, if you like looking at a pretty girl in a black bra and a skin-tight T-shirt getting squirted with water, diving into water, and generally running around while very wet, well, this movie does deliver that. She even takes her T-shirt off at the end, but it's too dark to really see anything. I suppose you could try turning up the brightness on your set. And that's about it.
Even with all that movie's faults, it still comes out better than this. Between the bad lines, strange accent of the female lead, and predictable death scenes (gee, he's standing by the water...HE'S not gonna get eaten by a shark!) I don't know whether this movie is supposed to make me vomit or just shrivel up and go into a coma. ... Read more

Also, Michael Blanks, who was in the first movie, plays a different character in the sequel. Like viewers aren't going to pick up on this? Add to that a scene when prison guards open fire on innocent spectators for no reason. This movie has no brain. I had to review this movie for a DVD web site and I want the hour and a half of my wasted life back!!!

Tung Wei is credited as co-fight director and also plays a young scholar who goes off, after his father's murder, to learn kung fu from a Buddhist monk. When he finally reappears to join the heroes, his kung fu doesn't help much. Overall, the fight scenes lack the vigor, imagination and relentlessness such scenes require. Wong Tao, normally quite a firebrand in his films, including THE HOT, THE COOL AND THE VICIOUS, in which he played a vaguely similar character, is too restrained here, trapped in a wig and period costume, spending too much time brooding and lamenting a childhood spent working in a brothel (seen in flashbacks). There's far more melodrama than a film like this is generally comfortable with. All that said, however, the film is beautifully photographed, designed and costumed. It's a consistent visual treat, even when the narrative sags. The Crash Cinema DVD offers a very good letter-boxed transfer of an original print with sharp imagery and striking color. However, the print is extremely scratchy in parts, with occasional speckles and scratch lines streaking vertically through the film. Some parts, however, are not so bad and look almost pristine. The DVD case features a picture of Yasuaki Kurata, a Japanese actor/fighter who often starred in Hong Kong movies (SHAOLIN CHALLENGES NINJA), but doesn't appear in this one.

Stars Lorenzo Lamas ( Snakeater and other cheesy TV and videos), O.J. Simpson ( of the slow speed white Bronco chase) and Kathleen Kinmont ( Picket Fences) Cheesy action film- not as bad as it sounds. Stunt work is pretty decent. Entertaining from 1993- this is one of O.J's last movies before his big TV/court cases ended his public career. ... Read more
