4-0 out of 5 stars A father finds his son...and himself
This film traces the odyssey of a young black man who is a product of the violent street gang culture of Los Angeles who finds self-respect in prison and when paroled he searches for his son in order to save him from the evils of ghetto life. Glenn Plummer's Bobby has all the attitude and menace of a young street tough who adheres to a strict code of honor of the Deuces, a violent street gang bent on controlling their neighborhood and making their turf unsafe for outsiders while encouraging young boys to commit crimes and risk their lives for a manipulative gang leader. LaRita Shelby is very effective as the barely conscious PCP addict Carole who has long since given up trying to be a wife and mother. She and Plummer represent an untapped wealth of talented black actors who deserve to be noted and applauded for their work in this film. Carl Lumbly's Ali turns Bobby around in prison as a Muslim teacher who encourages the young gang member to look within himself for strength, courage and dignity and to find his son and rescue him from the dead-end life of the mean streets of South Central.

3-0 out of 5 stars IT'S WORTH WATCHING
A GANG MEMBER [GLENN PLUMMER] ENDS UP IN JAIL FOR A DECADE. AFTER CHANGING HIS WAYS IN JAIL, HE GETS PAROLED AND NOW HE MUST STOP HIS SON FROM MAKING THE SAME MISTAKES HE MADE. NOT AS EFFECTIVE AS ''BOYZ N THE HOOD'' OR ''MENACE II SOCIETY', BUT IT'S AN OK HOOD MOVIE. GLENN PLUMMER DOES A GOOD JOB PORTRAYING THE REFORMED GANG MEMBER IN THIS MOVIE. IT'S WORTH A WATCH. FANS OF HOOD MOVIES SHOULD LIKE THIS.

5-0 out of 5 stars South Central Is A Classic
South Central is one of the premier hood based movies. It is about the start of a california based gang called the Deuces which I believe later becomes the Crips. But what it's really about is one man's struggle to get out of the gagsta life and to bring his son out of the hood. South Central is not as gorey as Menace II Society, so even older adults will like it, but it is still a great movie for teenagers and 20 year olds as well. My mother, brother, all of my brother's friends, and I loved this movie and I recommend it for anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars 2ND BEST GANG MOVIE EVER MADE!
THIS MOVIE SHOWS A TRUE LIFE OF A BIGG GANGG IN SOUTH CENTRAL,CA.IT SHOWS A MAN THAT GOES TO PRISON FOR MURDER AND WHILE IN THERE HE GOES THROUGH HARD TIMES AND DECIDES TO CHANGE HIS WHOLE ACT TOWARD EVEYTHING AND COMES OUT AND HE WANTED TO SAVE HIS SONS LIFE BEFORE IT'S TO LATE.THIS IS A VERY GOOD MOVIE.ALMIGHTY LOVE.5 ALIVE.ALLS WELL.FLUID-FO-LIFE.NO FOLKKS IN CHICAGO YA HEARD.

1-0 out of 5 stars Laughable.
A sad, melodramatic attempt to cash in on the gangsta-exploitation craze of the early 90s. Typical plot, typical ending, typical everything. The movie is so sad that it's funny -- especially the dimwittedness of the slapstick "Duece Gang." Watch this movie when it comes on the USA network in the wee hours of the morning, if you want a cure for your insomnia. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vestron Video vs. New Star Video release
I was a little hesitant in ordering this DVD when I read some of the previous reviews for this '80s trash-flick. Points mentioned like the frame stability of the movie, blurry transfer etc. Having the original Vestron VHS from 1985, I figured I would take the plunge & buy the DVD to make a comparison & make your decision to buy this '80s drive-in movie easier. First off, New Star has retained the original box art of "Savage Streets" that was used for the Vestron VHS version. The only difference is that the artwork has been compressed so that Linda Blair doesn't look as wide as on the VHS box art. The "Savage Streets" logo has changed to a white block letter font compared to the pink lettering used in the original artwork. The same synopsis has been used on the back of the DVD as the Vestron version. For the picture quality, it's about the same. This movie has always had a misty-veiled look to it. It's in focus & the fleshtones on the DVD are a little more natural than the Vestron VHS version. With the Vestron VHS, the flesh tones looked a little washed out & pastey. One thing that stands out is the frame instability of this movie. It's more apparent on the New Star DVD than on the Vestron VHS version. The beginning credits move up & down in both versions & some scenes throughout this film, but the DVD really shows up this filming flaw more. I never noticed a problem with the sound on the VHS version, but the DVD version is very clear, even on a circa 1982 mono Electrohome console TV. Finally, in the DVD version, there are a couple of scenes that show a clear horizontal noise line which looks like it has originated from the master tape. This is not a big deal, but you would think that if Jef Films (New Star) invested in digitally remastering this movie, then they would at least get a prestine print of it. My only complaint is that at the beginning of the disc you are forced to sit through a preview of "Cannibal Taboo". It doesn't allow you to exit this preview, you have to fast-forward through it to get to the main menu. The only added feature on this disc is a written biography of Linda Blair & a list of her theatrical releases(her made-for-TV ventures are not included). There are also scene selections, which is basic fare for a DVD. In conclusion, if you are a fan of Linda Blair, like I am, or you like '80s vigilante flicks, then this New Star DVD release is not as bad as previously reviewed. It would have been a nice touch to include the original movie trailer, and a keepcase insert of the original movie poster, but that's just a suggestion on my part. There are far worse DVDs out on the market, so with this one I give 5 stars for the movie & 4 for the actual DVD production.

5-0 out of 5 stars hooked on linda
Well to say the least i must be in love with linda blair,
because to except the dvd SAVAGE STREETS i must be.
It appears to be another one of those bad transfers its almost,
like watching a vhs the qaulity is ok but if i wanted it on vhs,
i would have bought a vhs.But anyway this movie is in my opinion one of her better roles.Even though this movie is a low budget flick it will maybe keep your attention. The start of the movie is most interesting linda dresses in that old style spandex and a very tight and reveling shirt.Ive said too much already.
But how i wish it was dvd qaulity but anyway i will add it to my collection and someday maybe someone will release a real dvd version.

thanx

1-0 out of 5 stars A good perf spoiled by the remastering
A small thriller with the good actress Linda Blair ruined by the absence of technical treatment ( the film is almost 20 years old)
the sound is fine. But the image shakes a lot at the beginning it is awfully blurred and waned as if the technician brought a digital camera in a movie theater to record the film... on the screen !
Avoid this version (New Star Video) that is supposed to be digitally remastered.
too bad for the original I appreciated in 1984

5-0 out of 5 stars one of Linda Blair's Best!
This is one of my, if not my favorite Linda Blair film. It's about Linda Blair and her friends who are in a fun loving but tough gang. after she and her friends play a joke on the local bad boy gang "scars, they get even with her. ... blair goes after them for revenge... her way. this is one i have seen countless times and i could watch it again. the only scene that i thought went too far was the rape scene. that was horrible.
Linda Blair is one of my favorite actresses and i remember seeing the ads for this in the paper when i was about 10! I should've snuck into the theater! This is one of those movies many consider trashy but i think its great. classic one liners are everywhere. see this movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars girl power
This is one of my favourite 80's movies. The rape scene and the violence is quite intense but frightfully realistic. At times your so drawn into the movie that your full of compassion. The music draws you into the whole 80's experience... ... Read more

Meyer Lansky, along with Bugsy Siegel and Lucky Luciano, helped mold organized crime in America into "the Syndicate," a business run as efficiently and ruthlessly as any corporation. Richard Dreyfuss plays Lansky (as do Max Perlich and Ryan Merriman). Starting out with Lansky as an aging, ill, cranky man taking refuge in Israel, the film tells his life in a series of flashbacks, starting out as a young Jewish tough trying to hold his own against Irish gangs in New York. Lansky and his associates climb the ladder of crime over the years, turning Las Vegas from a quiet desert town into a swank gambling hot spot, eliminating any rogue elements or competition that could hurt the cause. Senator Estes Kefauver came along to put a dent in the Mob's activities by the l950s, but Lansky and company came through fairly unscathed. With direction by John McNaughton and a pungent David Mamet screenplay, this should be top-drawer stuff, but, oddly, it comes across as only average. The movie's chronological structure, jumping back and forth in time, becomes a little confusing, then irritating. Three actors playing the same man over the years make it a bit difficult to nail down his real essence, while several other characters are barely more than window dressing. Also, the Judaism of Lansky, Siegel, Rosen, and Rothstein is given short shrift in the story. With tighter editing and firmer direction, Lansky could have been very good, but as is, it's just what it is: a made-for-cable biopic. --Jerry Renshaw ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What was this?
What was this movie? Meyer Lansky did a lot of good for this country. He was a wonderful, Jewish gangster. There should be more people like this mensch. This director and Richard Dreyfuss, dare to tell the story of a great man such as Meyer Lansky? Oh Please!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Dreyfuss and Perlich are Incredible as Meyer Lansky
The overall production quality of "Lansky" is barely adequate. This HBO TV special comes across as a film made under severe time and financial constraints. Nonetheless, the acting talent of Richard Dreyfuss is utterly fantastic. The now middle-aged star gives a performance that ranks among his very best. Dreyfuss clearly understands this low keyed Jewish gangster who lead much of American organized crime in the previous century. The character actor Max Perlich also does a splendid job of portraying Lansky during his earlier years. Perlich is a skillful thespian who deserves greater respect and attention. He ought to have received at least an Academy Award nomination for his splendid supporting work in "Rush."

Meyer Lansky was something of a highly intelligent mob boss who essentially perceived himself as a misunderstood polite business man; neither better nor worse than the titans of that era's capitalist business organizations. Lansky rationalizations conveniently ignored the fact that murder and other forms of violence are not everyday realities of conventional American capitalism. Lansky, though, was probably correct to conclude that FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and Senator Estes Kefauver hounded him mostly out of less than noble reasons.

"Lansky" accurately depicts the Jewish gangsters as far more intelligent than those generally found in other ethnic groups. Also, the Meyer Lanskys, "Bugsy" Siegels, and Alfred Rothsteins were the only generation of that ethnic tradition that chose careers in organized crime. Their progeny did not follow in their father's footsteps! Meyer Lansky, for instance, made sure that his own son attended West Point and became a U.S. military officer. "Lansky" earns four stars. I highly recommend this movie if you are someone genuinely interested in understanding the motivations of a Meyer Lansky. He may not be an American hero, but Lansky cannot be ignored if you truly desire to comprehend the difficulties of many to assimilate into our national culture.

2-0 out of 5 stars What a Disappointment!
As a big fan of mafia related movies, I was very disappointed with this movie. Lansky floats back and forth from past to present making it hard to follow and irratating. This film has a plot as good as any, however this plot is shot with poor actor selection and goofy directing. Don't waste your time on Lansky.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice try
One should know Lanky's story in advance to follow. However, Dreyfus does not seem to be the best selection for Lansy

1-0 out of 5 stars please!
Who wants to see Richard Dreyfus in a mafia movie? Of all the actors who could have played Lansky, why did they select Dreyfus? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars incomprehensible
after viewing this tape, i felt as if i was trapped on the dark planet. the story is limp and aimless, with no real direction. badly written plot that makes no sense. who are all the characters supposed to be? i couldnt tell you. this movie must have been written by a seven year old.

5-0 out of 5 stars dark planet
have just finished watching dark planet and enjoyed could not leave the room as i was glued to it great acting from paul mercurio as i had only seen him in strictly ballroom and think that is terrific read reviews about dark planet before watching and do not know what they are talking about i think paul mercurio is a great actor and wish he would do more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad? Did you say bad?
You want to know how bad this movie is? I watched for all of about 10 minutes then shut it off! The so-called special effects resemble those from arcade video games of 20 years ago! Avoid like the plague!

1-0 out of 5 stars So bad it's bad
Michael York in an incomprehensible mess. One of the worst movies I've ever seen. No, not bad-good, just bad-bad.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than what I was expecting
I am a big scifi fan and a friend recommended this film. I was plesantly surprised to see Paul Mercurio. I have been a fan of his since Strictly Ballroom. He was quite believable as the hero "Hawke." What I liked was that he wasn't completely gung ho and he had a few good oneliners. The storyline was believable and the effects weren't bad considering their budget. The acting was good, especially the main characters. I liked this much better than the first Star Trek film (original cast) and I'm a big Star Trek Fan. I plan on buying the DVD to add to my scifi collection. A good Saturday Afternoon flick. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Back to Twin Peaks
A very strange, almost stock version of a David Lynchesque miscast. That said, I liked it anyhow.

Heather Graham plays a young widow who has witnessed her husband's murder and the murderer himself commit suicide(I think they were more than buddies wink wink.) There is no determined timeframe thereafter, but she is in a daze and living in an apartment alone and randomly and promiscuously engaging in sex with random guys, oh and one girl too. Well, the sex always revolves around her getting orally surfeited but that's of no matter is it? It's Heather Graham being sexed up! Anyhow somebody begins to stalk her and and and the police won't help and and and she keeps getting beaten and and and followed around by a big white car etc. Finally the mysterious stalker is exposed!

I'm giving it 4 1/2 stars on H. Graham alone being so lovely and just acting like a complete lulu. Her hair is wild, her demeanor is aloof to the things which don't interest her(which is everything) and she crouches over some guy lying on the floor, sans panties and rubs herself into his face. Even when she is at work typing, her shoulders bobbing and the doe-eyes are ghostly round, she is entrancing. I hope H. G. isn't a real-life Hollywood trollop because she sure made me buy into the movie on her presence alone. I even liked her in Say It Isn't So, a romantic comedy, which would make me gag normally. So what I am saying is that I am whoring out any objectivity principally on her aesthetics. But honestly, the movie wasn't bad either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Random but cool
The movie was at the same time extremely scary but hysterically funny. The neurotic sensibility in Graham's performance is similar to Mia farrow in Rosemary's baby. It left a really deep impression on me since the whole film was so roughly presented and sharply scary. The film is so sharp and rough it even transcends into something really justifiable. Looking back on it I really loved it and how it could scare me like no other film (not anne rice, not from dusk till dawn, not even the baby of Rosemary.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very intriguing
I like the way it gives you a twist when you actually think that there is someone real that is stalking her but a lot of scenes were cut out and that is what makes the movie a burial into the moritorium of movies. Other than that if I could just get my hands on an original uncut version that woud be fine too.Thank's..

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Uncut
I bought this movie because of a still of the movie that I downloaded recently of Heather Graham sitting on the face of some guy. But when I watched this dvd I noticed to my horror that this particular scene had been edited out. I find this strange as the dvd is R rated.
A complete waste of my money and there's nothing I can do about it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun to see, no more, no less.
Why Roy Scheider plays a part in a movie like this I really don't know, but it elevates Executive Target just a little bit above your everyday action movie. It does not really have much of a plot. ( Former stunt driver has his wife kidnapped and must help kidnap the president to get her released, how unlikely can you get ) but Michael Madson as the frantic driver makes tme most of the part and Scheider as the president is quite believable. The action scenes, especially the car-chases are really good and the movie is short enough that you don't get bored from the lack of story and dialogue. Nothing special, but good for an evening of fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars An above average B-pic!
I didn't expect to find one of the best ever car chases is a straight-to-video, (I don't know about the rest of the world, but in Australia, this went straight-to-video) but Executive Target proved me wrong. The presence of the ever-cool Madsen also makes this movie a winner. To sum it up, its vertually a movie version of the playstation game "DRIVER".

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Roy Scheider.
He and Michael Madsen earnestly trudge through this B movie with nary a flash of charisma. The supporting characters ham things up in an appropriately campy way, but the low-budget mayhem looks flat and dull. ... Read more

A young Marine officer (Jim Hanks, brother of Tom) is assigned to lead a team of military misfits on a cleanup mission on an island used for internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. The team consistsof a tough female with an attitude, a big dumb-jock type, a dope-smoking nut case, and a completely out-of-place soldier who has no business in the military. Things seem rather amiss from the start, with the squad given a minimum of information by their rather sinister C.O. Instead of finding the explosives they were sent to defuse, the Marines run afoul of a group of cranky, big-headed aliens who love nothing more than subjecting humans to prolonged torture. The aliens can puke battery acid all over their victims, or snare them with their prehensile tongues; the tough-gal Marine falls victim to an alien spider web.The GIs run across a hermit on the island who somehow has a l6mm projector and films of an alien vivisection conducted in 1955, with the alien's mate watching; hence the extraterrestrials' grudge against humans in general.XTRO 3 has an interesting story line, with its X-Files-like subplot of government cover-up and suppression. However, it's hamstrung by CGI effects that look like relics of the '50s, slim character development, and bad dialogue (the gung-ho Marines actually tell each other, "Semper Fi" more than once). What the movie lacks in budget, however, it makes up for in disgusting gore effects, and the room of obsolete technology (dial telephones, grandfather clocks, teletypes, cathedral radios) in the aliens' lair is a nice touch. --Jerry Renshaw ... well just what can you say about a movie like this the effects, screenplay, directing, acting were simply awful none of it was even slightly realistic. To think i actually thought this film was going to be even slightly scary. Oh yes and by the way i didnt want to put any stars but seen as though its compulsory to put at the least 1 i had no option in large i am basing this revieuw on the vhs version, although in contrast any one buying the digital disc version must be out of their mind.
