5-0 out of 5 stars God recruits agnostic man to spread His Message
George Burns and John Denver are a winning pair as God and the young middle class American guy who has trouble "believing", much less spreading the Good News. The "tests" Denver has for Burns to prove that he really IS God are hilarious. When Denver asks Burns to make it rain (on a sunny day), Burns does just that...but only inside of Denver's car! Eventually Denver does get the "message" and lives his life as a better person. -- This is a wonderful family movie, followed by a somewhat weaker, but no less sweet sequal (Oh God, Book II). A little 70s nostalgia doesn't hurt this film one bit. A winner!

4-0 out of 5 stars CULT MOVIES 40
40. OH! GOD! (comedy, 1977) Jerry (John Denver) is an assistant-manager for a produce store. He's an honest man who has a wife and 2 kids. Just your normal kind of guy that is until God (George Burns) requests an audience with him. He has picked Jerry to carry his message of good will to an increasingly pessimistic world. But Jerry finds that people are difficult to convert, he even has trouble trying to make his family understand that God appears to him as a kindly old guy. His faith remains strong until his call starts to slowly filter through.

Critique: A surprise box-office hit when first released, it spawned other sequels that proved interesting ('OH! GOD! BOOK 2', 'OH! GOD! YOU DEVIL'). 81 year old George Burns shines as the perennial God, a role that he played with sweet abandonment. His deliveries of lines are perfectly executed. This God seems to have an answer for everything: on creating the world he quips; "to tell you the truth I thought about it for 6 days and did the whole thing in 1". What's most interesting is that the film takes an unbiased, non-religious look at our Creator. This God doesn't believe in religions or its leaders, and sees "human suffering" as being our fault (not his) since we perpetrate the acts. No wonder the very simple themes and in-jokes appealed to so many.

QUOTE: Jerry: "Sometimes, now and then, couldn't we just talk?" God: "Tell you what, you talk I'll listen."

4-0 out of 5 stars Good movie, good commentary track
As much as I really like this movie, I wish there was a box set including the two sequels. The original is the best, easily, but with the amount of movie series coming to dvd it would only make sense to have the trilogy. "Oh God Book Two" is lackluster, for the most part, but "Oh God You Devil" is quite a corker (with George Burns playing a dual role as God and the Devil).

This is a low-key, laid back kind of movie. This might seem insufferably tame and sedate by many of today's young moviegoers, especially in light of manic "comedies" such as "Bruce Almighty" which had fun with religious-themed humor. But for those of us old enough to remember it- and to remember the sly wit of George Burns- it is a treat to revisit the movie in widescreen. The commentary track with Carl Reiner and Teri Garr is a winner, essentially as laid back as the movie itself but entirely satisfying. Speaking of Ms. Garr, she was quite a fox back in the day and looks great in this movie. God bless her as she struggles with MS.

It's been said before, but the ending of the movie gets a little gimmicky and could've been just as low-key as the rest of the movie. The 'special effects' and theatrics in the courtroom are a bit out of step with the rest of the movie. But otherwise, this one is a real charmer. Now, if only we could get the sequels on dvd too.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling View of a Very Personable God
When granted an interview with God, John Denver - an assistant manager at Food World, thinks that it is a practical joke by one of his friends. When the invitation turns up again in an unexpected place, it gets his attention - even though he doesn't believe in God.

George Burns plays wonderfully as God and the ensuing scenes where he convinces Denver that he is who he says he is have an enduring and endearing quality. His message is simple. God is alive. God cares. We have been given everything we need to make it work - and it can, if we want it to. Convincing the world, however, is another matter. From the religious editor at the LA Times who thinks Denver is just another fruitcake to Denver's boss at Food World who is offended that Denver would suggest that God would pick an unbelieving assistant manager instead of him, a man who has prayed with Billy Graham, no less, all the personalities come out. After an appearance on Dinah Shore, spaced out weirdos show up on his lawn and harass his kids and wife. Finally, a panel of religious experts agree to give Denver a set of questions that he could not possibly answer (they are written in Aramaic). After completing the questions, Denver delivers his package and a few choice words from God to a stereotypical televangelist (aka "God's Own Quarterback" - having delivered the benediction at this year's Superbowl). The film finally culminates in a courtroom scene where Burns, as God, gives a powerful delivery.

This film has some of the best writing. Burns has many humorous lines - it IS a comedy - but he also has some pretty profound and meaningful lines. In an obvious reference to the film The Exorcist, he comments on how easy it is for people to believe in the devil. But not God. He says that what we have here is some of his best work, that we should take care of it and appreciate it. He says that he knows how hard it can be in these troubled times to believe in God but, if it helps, we should know that he believes in us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic 70's cinema -- weak DVD features
If you're reading this, you've probably already seen it and know it's a great movie. The DVD features are minimal (trailers, a list of awards, and George Burns' movies). Some deleted scenes or outtakes would have been really interesting, but there are none offered.

The commentary track reveals a few interesting things about the movie, but also rambles about non-related things. They admitted they hadn't seen the movie in a long time, so their commentary could have been better had they prepared.

Another weird problem: the music on the main menu is so distorted it sounds like it's being played through a cheap hand radio. But the sound on the movie is good.

If I could rate the DVD features separately, I would give them two stars. ... Read more

"Suspense in a void" is how critic Pauline Kael described this action-packed hit from 1983. In other words, this is one of those flashy, superbly crafted high-tech thrillers in which the star is a machine, while intelligent plotting and human characters are a lesser priority. The machine in question is Blue Thunder--a heavily armored prototype helicopter that is secretly being tested for use in a devious government conspiracy. Roy Scheider plays the police pilot who catches on to the nefarious plot and takes to the skies against an evil army colonel (Malcolm McDowell) who will defend his coconspirators at any cost. Director John Badham was a hot property in the early '80s (he directed WarGames the same year), and Blue Thunder served as the popular model for many formulaic action thrillers to follow. That doesn't make it a great movie, but with a fine cast (including Daniel Stern in a memorable supporting role) and a dazzling aerial chase among big-city skyscrapers, Blue Thunder qualifies as slick entertainment. --Jeff Shannon ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for a movie sequel
Most sequels to great movies aren't very good, but "Robocop 2" is an exception. Robocop (Peter Weller) returns to rid the city of criminals. In this sequel, he's ultimately after the drug lord of the city, Cain (Tom Noonan). But the road to finding Cain won't come easy, especially not after Robocop gets torn to pieces by some of Cain's people. However, Robocop does finally meet Cain face to face, except that Cain isn't human anymore, he's a cyborg just like Robocop himself, and an evil one at that.

I don't see how anybody could give "Robocop 2" a bad rating because it's a great sequel. It has a little bit of dark humor such as a commercial where a woman puts on blue suntan lotion that has a caution reading: "Using this too much can cause cancer." And best of all it has spectacular action sequences, especially after Robocop and Cain finally meet and start fighting each other. The special effects are great, and Robocop 2 (Cain as a robot) is especially well done with all his weapons and the computer that acts as Cain's brain.

If you like great action movies or if you liked the first "Robocop," I recommend getting "Robocop 2" without thinking twice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic sequel.
Many people hate this movie. I didn't. It is just as good as the original and 1000 times better than #3. Set about one year after the first one (listen to the Old Man"s speech before he introduces Robocop 2), RoboCop is back and this time he's up against druglord Cain (Tom Noonan) and the young Hod (Gabriel Damon). The cops won't do anything because they are still on strike, but RoboCop and his partner Lewis (Nancy Allen) are still in business. RoboCop captures Cain eventually, but OCP, who created RoboCop, creates RoboCop 2 and puts Cain's brain in the machine. Now RoboCop must fight Cain one last time in the building OCP gave to Detroit as "a gift."

This was a good movie, not as bad as some people give it credit for. Peter Weller did a fantastic job as RoboCop. Tom Noonan and Gabriel Damon did just as good. This is one of the best sequels of all time. So remember to buy this and the original and avoid #3 at all costs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Robocop 2 REVIEW
Worthwhile sequel to Verhoven's smash hit, "Robocop" has Weller reprising his role of Alex Murphy, a deceased cop brought back as a machine to fight crime in futuristic Detriot. This time around, Motor City is at war as a dictator-like drug dealer is using his new designer drug, "Nuke" to gather a group of followers. Meanwhile, most of the police force is on strike while Robo's manufacturing company, OCP, wants to take over the bankrupt city. OCP decides to create a newer more stronger "Robocop" but rather than use an actual field officer like they did with Murphy, they turn to the very drug dealer who has turned the city into a war zone. The usual violent mayhem ensues before the two Robocops battle their way through the city in an anti-climatic grudge match. "Robocop 2" is even more violent than the original but it does still feature a lot of the over-the-top humor displayed in its predecessor as well. Fans of the first will enjoy but most others will proably be unimpressed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Robocop 2
A fun movie see this if you like the 1st movie and see the thrid!

2-0 out of 5 stars Fun movie...until it starts taking itself seriously
The first hour of this film was actually kind of fun, but in the middle of the second act the dark humor and self-satire soon gets replaced by violence. And lots of violence. And that means loads o' killing. So if you like bodies getting flung around all over the place, this might be your kind of movie. I think even Joe Bob Briggs would lose count on how mean "dead bodies" this movie has. I don't know if it's action so much as a string of massacres put before the viewer.

And hey...what does every one see in Peter Weller? Saying he's a great actor and all - how can you tell? Most of the time his face is covered save the mouth, and his role calls for no expression in his voice. (...)

And were we supposed to feel bad the bratty kid got killed? You know...the kid who tried to strangle the female lead with wire, killed a few policemen, and then tried to start a drug ring. I don't care if he's 12, you live by the sword you die by sword. Don't play that sad music and have Robocop be all sympathetic! Blech. Puuuuuh-leez.

You know we need more movies where kids die...especially the annoying ones. I'll give this movie that. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Knight in Shining Titanium
This is the first time I remember the third film in a series being the absolute best. Maybe it is because this is the film where Robocop finally gets his priorities straight- as well as the rest of the Detroit PD. I always saw the character as more of a knight in shining armor than a cop, and here he comes across as all that. As a matter of fact, with his new flight pack he comes across as a shining avenging angel.

I especially enjoyed the scenes where the corporate managers of the OCP Corp (Offensive Capitalist Pigs) offed thenselves by jumping out of windows and shooting themselves. Too bad life doesn't follow art more often. After all, this film only slightly exagerates the attitude of multinational corporate managers towards the American people. They sold us out to their corporate masters....

There were scenes in this movie that I actually stood and cheered for, and other scenes that brought a lump to my throat. That doesn't happen very often to me these days. Then I notice who wrote the screenplay- the great Frank Miller ("Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" and "Sin City.") That explained everything.

I really loved this film.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best of the series, but still fun!
This is clearly the weakest of the 3 Robocop movies. Robo 1 and 2 are truly thrilling. This one is over-the-edge in believability, and it does not have Peter Weller, so therefore, we get less of his humanity, since the new actor is not very talkative.

There are some very good performances in this movie, however. Particularly by Remy Ryan as the smart little girl who assists Robo and CCH Pounder who is the heroine of sorts. Both are very good in their parts.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wow...Really Not Good
Robocop: Great, great sci-fi action film, famous mostly for it's extreme graphicness. Rated R.

Robocop 2: Manages to be just as, if not more, graphic than Robocop. You can tell they try to be controversial too. (Kid as a drug lord, man holds a gun to a baby's head) Rated R.

Robocop 3: New actor, Robocop learns to fly...almost no blood the entire film. Rated PG13.

What the $#!@ happened?!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad movie!
I'm not a fan of Robocop and the movies with him, especially the ones from 2001, but this movie has totally changed my mind about him . This movie has great action, a good plot, great costumes, and a great script. I don't know why everyone gave gave this movie bad reviews because it's not a bad movie. I give it 5 STARS! Loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well,
This film got alot of negative reviews. Notice the five stars I'm giving it? That means positive.

This was actually the first Robocop movie I ever watched (The other 2 were rated R, and at the time I was only 10), and Robocop shot right up there with Batman and Spiderman. So, I suppose I'm a bit biased, and prolly should rate it lower, but I just couldnt do that to one of my all-time favorites (and one of my first) action movies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best of the 4 Prime Directives series
As a huge Robocop fan, it is easy for me to overlook the flaws and cosmetic blunders and enjoy the meat of the movie: Action. There is lots of good action featuring my favorite character, Robo himself.

In this movie he faces "Robocable," his replacement, and the ensuing battles and chases are excellent.

Don't set hopes too high, but this is worth a look.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tech specs update
It seems that everywhere you look on-line to fine the DVD tech specs you get different answers. Well, I'm here to set things straight.

This R1 release is issued in Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1) with English Dolby 2.0 Surround. Surprisingly it's a good strong surround mix. Dialogue, despite some negetive reviews of the broadcase version, is strong and easily understandable.

The R2 release however appears to be in Dolby 5.1, which is ashame because the R1 could have benefitted from a 5.1 mix. But anyway...

Picture quality? Pretty good for a TV show. The only issue is with out-of-focus background lights. They have that digital compression "dot crawl". But other than that, all live action and special f/x look extremely sharp and clear.

Just recently bought this series in geer up for the new release of the Robocop Trilogy. Now, I'd like to see the mid-'90s Robocop series released on DVD. The only thing lacking in this series is the lack of use of Robo's automated targeting grid system. I always found that aspect very cool about the theatrical movies.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is NOT Robocop 2!!!!
This is the third of the three made and it is just AWFUL.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not vintage...
Since there were three of these Robocop things and the first one was great and the last one was bloody awful, one might be forgiven for assuming that the second one might not be that bad. But one would be wrong. Avoid.

1-0 out of 5 stars IT'S SAD TO SEE HOW LOW THE ROBOCOP MOVIES HAVE REALLY GONE
IN THE 2ND INSTALLMENT IN THE PRIME DIRECTIVES SERIES, ROBOCOP GOES CRAZY AND STARTS TO WREAK HAVOC ON DETROIT. BUT TROUBLE FOR ROBOCOP SOON COMES WHEN HIS SYSTEM STARTS TO BREAK DOWN ON HIM AND EVEN WORSE IS THE FACT THAT OCP HAS MADE A NEW ROBOCOP TO STOP HIM, WHICH IS MODELED AFTER ROBO'S MURDERED PARTNER, JOHN CABLE. THIS IS VERY VERY BORING AND IT'S VERY VERY POINTLESS. I MUST SAY THAT PAGE FLETCHER IS BY FAR THE WORST ROBOCOP TO EVER APPEAR ON SCREEN. HE MAKES ROBERT JOHN BURKE SEEM LIKE PETER WELLER. WELL, SO FAR, THE 1ST 2 MOVIES IN THE PRIME DIRECTIVES SERIES HAVE BEEN BOTH EQUALLY BORING, I STUTTER TO THINK WHAT PART 3 IS GONNA BE LIKE. ... Read more

With the surprise success--both critical and commercial--of Robocop, it was inevitable that a sequel would emerge (actually, two sequels). But this follow-up lacked the dyspeptically funny vision of filmmaker Paul Verhoeven and wound up skimming the surface to repeat only the most superficial elements of the original: the big, clunky hero (played by Peter Weller), the ultra-violence (minus a dark sense of humor), and the plethora of action sequences. What plot there is deals with the corporation that runs the cops and its two-pronged attempt to squeeze every dime out of the populace and the city: create a new drug crisis (with an incredibly addictive synthetic drug the corporation manufactures, spread by a charismatic drug lord) and then attack with a bigger robot, one that eliminates Robocop at the same time. Would that they had. --Marshall Fine ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A B Movie at Best
I thought RoboCop 3 was just OK. I loved the first one. It was great. RoboCop is my all time favorite Movie ever made. I think the Robo trilogy is the best. I watch them often. But the problem with 3 is they got rid of Nancy Allen and he flew. RoboCop wasn't meant to fly. I liked the new arsenal he had in this film, but nothing compares to his old fashioned killer gun. They tried to copy the first one with the music and some of the dialogue. Also the humor was good some parts were funny. I think that kid was too smart. Be that i am a die hard RoboCop fan, I think this is worth owning and watching on DVD. The sound is incredible. I wouldn't recommend the average movie buyer to get this, but I would reccomend this to all Robofans. I thought the series was great!

2-0 out of 5 stars This is Painfully SH*T!!!
After the high quality of the first two films there's only one way to go...downhill and fast.
This film put plain and simply is pants! A crappy japanese cyborg is created as the new nemesis for robocop, & it looks exactly like a human.
A piss-take of the first two films rolled into one, what a disaster...ignore this film.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh man!
What a crap film this is!
Some films are so bad that they are funny. This isn't one of them. It's just plain bad.

I have nothing more to say on the subject cept make sure that your holding a loaded gun to your head before you start watching this film. That way you can put yourself out of your misery in the fastest possible way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lead in for TV Series and lame tv movies
This movie must have been made as a pilot for the series that followed. This would explain the lack of wit and social commentary as well as the toning down of the violence. This movie had a serious continuity problem. Nobody seems to have noticed that in the first two movies Robocop had a son, yet in the 3rd movie during the flashbacks he had a daughter. This was truly a bad sequel.

2-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS KINDA INSULTING TO THE FIRST TWO MOVIES
OCP PLANS ON DESTROYING DETROIT TO BUILD DELTA CITY. BUT, WHEN A GANG OF ANGERED RESIDENTS DECIDE TO FIGHT OCP BACK, PROBLEMS IMMEDIATELY BEGIN. TO ADD TO THE PROBLEMS, ROBOCOP [PLAYED HERE BY ROBERT JOHN BURKE] JOINS THE PEOPLE IN THEIR QUEST FOR FREEDOM. NOT AS VIOLENT AS THE FIRST TWO MOVIES, AND IT'S ALSO NOT AS GOOD. THE BIGGEST MISTAKE THEY MADE WITH THIS MOVIE WAS TO REPLACE PETER WELLER AS ROBOCOP. ROBERT JOHN BURKE JUST SEEMS LOST AS ROBOCOP. THIS SERIES WAS SERIOUSLY STARTING TO RUN OUT OF STEAM TOWARD THIS POINT. WHY COULDN'T THEY JUST KEEP THIS ONE ON THE SHELF? ANYWAY, ANOTHER BIG MISTAKE THEY MADE WAS TO HAVE ANN, ROBO'S PARTNER FROM THE FIRST TWO MOVIES, GET KILLED. HAS A FEW GOOD ACTION SEQUENCES, BUT IT'S SERIOUSLY LACKING THE ENTERTAINMENT THAT CAME WITH THE FIRST TWO MOVIES. IF YOU STILL HAVEN'T SEEN THIS BUT YOU WANNA SEE IT, RENT THIS, BUT DON'T BUY THIS. FOLLOWED BY FOUR DIRECT-TO-VIDEO MOVIES. ... Read more
