3-0 out of 5 stars Not So Super
For years, Meyer's movies were only available on VHS for obscenely high prices. When this movie finally came out on DVD, I couldn't wait to see it again. Russ Meyer wrote, directed, produced and edited this film, so it includes all of his strengths and weaknesses. All of the women have very large breasts, but the sex scenes are fleeting and not very erotic. The dialogue is corny, and all of the characters are caricatures. Most disturbing of all, the violence is not only excessive and over the top, it comprises most of the movie.

Shari Eubank is fine as the demanding SuperAngel, who rises from the ashes of her fiery demise to become SuperVixen, the gorgeous gal with a heart of gold. Charles Napier is great as he chews cigars and chews scenery, playing the macho officer Harry Sledge. He went on to bigger and better things, appearing in many mainstream movies, such as "The Blues Brothers" and "Rambo." Charles Pitts is too bland to be convincing as Clint Ramsey, the stud every super-stacked woman is dying to have sex with. Christy Hartburg, who had a cameo as SuperLorna and is featured on the cover of the DVD, never appeared in another movie! "Supervixens" has not aged very well, and is more interesting as a curiosity than as a cult classic. ... Read more

If you don't think Austin Powers is one of the funniest movies of the 1990s, maybe you should be packed into a cryogenic time-chamber and sent back to the decade whence you came.Perhaps it was the 1960s--the shag-a-delic decade when London hipster Austin Powers scored with gorgeous chicks as a fashion photographer by day, crime-fighting international man of mystery by night. Yeah, baby, yeah! But when Powers's arch nemesis, Dr. Evil, puts himself into a deep-freeze and travels via time-machine to the late 1990s, Powers must follow him and foil Evil's nefarious scheme of global domination. Mike Myers plays dual roles as Powers and Dr. Evil, with Elizabeth Hurley as his present-day sidekick and karate- kicking paramour. A hilarious spoof of '60s spy movies, this colorful comedy actually gets funnier with successive viewings, making it a perfect home video for gloomy days and randy nights. 5-0 out of 5 stars This Is My Kind Of Happeing And It Freaks Me Out
That's a qoute from Mike Myers in Ausitn Powers: International Man Of Mystery. I must say it's the funniest most clever comedy I've ever seen. Much better than Casino Royale. Myers plays the swinging secret agent of the 60's Austin Powers who is a groovy sexy fashion photographer by night and international man of mystery by night. He after his arch nemisis Dr. Evil also played by Myers, an uptight square out to take over the world. Dr. Evil freeze himself up in outerspace in 1967. Austin offers to freeze himself in case Dr. Evil ever returns. Thirty years later, in 1997 Dr. Evil was back and they must get Ausitn unfreeze Austin so he can stop Dr. Evil's sinister plan of world domination. Incredibly funny flick, even funnier if you've seen the James Bond series. Myers duo roles are both hilarious in their own way. The Movie also stars Elizabeth Hurley, Robert Wagner, Mimi Rogers and Carrie Fisher. Austin Powers is a must see for all ages. It's shagnificent baby, yeah!

3-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, influential movie gains little from DVD
I should note here that people who have not read many of my reviews might be insulted at the rating. I never give a DVD release of an outstanding movie more than three stars unless buying the DVD gets you significantly more than just seeing the matinee. In other words, the special features are worth two stars.

"Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" catapulted Mike Myers onto the Hollywood A-list from the "former Saturday Night Liver trying to make it" list. Taking a broadside at James Bond lore and adding Myers own inherent goofiness along with a tragic period in fashion history gives Austin Powers, a British secret agent/fashion photographer/music star. Unlike James Bond, Austin is extremely goofy, bespectacled, possessed of wretched teeth, and bad at any game. Of course, he still gets the girl. His nemesis: the frequently funnier Dr. Evil, an obvious copy of Bond villain Blofeld. Dr. Evil's marginal competence provides an ongoing source of laughs.

The plot (as it were) centers around a bit of cryogenic time travel so that Austin is displaced out of his time, providing a (pleasantly) surprisingly small number of fish-out-of-water gags. The movie's real drive comes from the unique cast of secondary characters: Seth Green's Scott Evil, Mindy Sterling's Frau Farbissiner, Robert Wagner's Number Two, and the unforgettable Alotta Fagina (figure out who THAT is a parody of). Elizabeth Hurley is also in the movie, and seems to be a pretty good sport. While this movie would ultimately be outshone by its first sequel, it remains an influential and often-referenced work.

The DVD is a mediocre package. The commentary track is a dead air-rich bore, (I think Mike Myers and Jay Roach were new at this gig. The track on the sequel is much better) and the deleted scenes are better than average, which is to say mediocre. Most deleted scenes should stay so. Additionally, the transfer quality on these scenes is terrible.

5-0 out of 5 stars AUSTIN POWERS THE FIRST TWO
VERY VERY VERY FUNNY, BUT WOULD LOVE TO HAVE IT IN FULL SCREEN VERSION.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yeah, Baby
Austin Powers is one of the funniest characters to ever grace the screen. The spy spoof movie series is fantastic and it all started with this hit movie.

Austin Powers is pretty simple to follow. Dr.Evil(Myers)has escaped from his cyro-genetics and is now in the 1990's. He has plans for world domination and his evil empire is doing great since he was frozen 30 years ago. The world can't let Dr. Evil rule it, so Austin Powers(Myers) Englands greatest secret agent is unfrozen from his cryo state and sent to stop Dr.Evil. He is not alone as he has the beautiful Vannessa(Hurley) there to help him bring down Dr. Evil.

Mike Myers is a comic genius. Very few people in the world can match his comic intelligence. This movie is fantastic. Myers wrote the perfect script with this movie and it's hilarious. You have to love how much this movie spoofs spy movies.

When you think spy movies you think James Bond. The spoof of Bond in this movie is done to perfection. From the costumes, music, characters, it is all there. Other spy movies are spoofed in this as well like Our Man Flint. If you love spy movies you have to appreciate this movie and the way it pokes of fun of them.

I liked Elizabeth Hurley in the movie. She is absolutely gorgeous in the movie and this role works for her. She is to often a miscast in her moives and her sex appeal is suppose to carry her. It's not much different in this, but she fits the characters personality and this is the best role she has ever played.

I love all the cameos in this movie. Like all the great movies with former SNL cast members this movie is jammed full of cameos of Hollywood stars. You have Will Ferrell, Ceri Oteri, Rob Lowe, Carrie Fisher, and Tom Arnold to name a few. I get a kick out of it everytime I watch this, because I almost always see something new.

The DVD extras are good. There are some alternate endings and deleted scenes. There is commentary from Myers. The special features are decent.

This is a great movie. It's comedey at it's best and it has all the elements of the genre. It's one of the best ever made. If you love comedies you have to pick this one up and the same if you like spy movies. If you haven't seen this go get out from the rock you've been living under and prepare yourself for a good time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Satire of all 'swings' Sixties
It would be worthless for me to repeat what other reviewers have said here before me, as regards the fun spoofy plot and the thoroughly enjoyable crass humor. I'll add that it's a bit of a classic, great fun especially if you already know Blow Up, early 007 movies, and A Hard Day's Night.

I just want to mention that the VHS issue has on it several extras... alternate endings and deleted scenes (including one of the excised Rob Lowe scenes, although not the one in which Lowe is shown as a henchman inside Dr. Evil's lair... Asian audiences got to see that version).

Good, silly fun, but too much sexual content for kids under 13. ... Read more

Jonathan Demme's last idiosyncratic film before he went all mainstreamand "serious" with The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia is a wacky, energetic comedy that looks at mob life with affection, and established Michelle Pfeiffer as both a stunning leading lady and a consummate character actress. When Angela DeMarco (Pfeiffer), fed up with a house filled with furniture and appliances that "fell off a truck," asks her husband, hit man Frank "the Cucumber" (Alec Baldwin), for a divorce, he laughs at her and tells her she'll never escape the mob's clutches. Opportunity arises, though, in the form of Frank's untimely demise, after he's efficiently dispatched by mob head Tony "the Tiger" (Dean Stockwell, in an Oscar-nominated performance) for having an affair with Tony's mistress. Seizing her opportunity, Angela flees Long Island for the city, taking her son and donating all her possessions to Goodwill. Angela thinks she's finally free, but in reality not only does a lovesick Tony have his eye on her, but she's also being spied on by a government agent (Matthew Modine)who thinks she can lead him to the mob boss. Wild and all over the place, Married to the Mob is a genial mess, grounded by Pfeiffer's phenomenal performance, which perfectly mixes comedy and pathos. Her tentative first steps into mob-free life are both comic and touching to watch, whether she's shyly flirting with Modine or fending off the lecherous advances of Stockwell. Mercedes Ruehl, as Tony's big-haired, slightly crazy, put-upon wife, almost steals the show, especially in the film's shoot-'em-up finale, set in Miami and featuring the wonderful Trey Wilson as Modine's FBI boss. The movie is decidedly slack in places, and suffered some damage in the editing room (take a look at the copious outtakes in the film's end credits), but with its high spirits and delightful details, Married to the Mob will definitely make you an offer you can't refuse. --Mark Englehart ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Demme's best film
MARRIED TO THER MOB is not only Jonathan Demme's best film but perhaps the single funniest comedy to emerge from Hollywood in the Eighties. Its depiction of the New York area mob enormously influenced David Chase's THE SOPRANOS on HBO, and hasn't received the recognition for this it deserves. The genius of the film is that all the film's characters (with the exceptions of Michelle Pfeiffer, Matthew Modine and Sister Carol) are all mosters of taste as well as morality, and yet none of them seem to realize this: they think everyone else likes the same furniture, and beahves in the same way, as they do. This has the effect of making their awful choices in home decor seem sublime ("I see a great house!" Alec Baldwin complains, when he looks around at the illgotten and hideous goods his mob work has won him), and their moral choices hilarious. Dean Stockwell, as the randy head of the mob family after Pfeiffer's heroine, and Mercedes Ruehl, as his dumb but jealously devoted wife, almost steal the show (there's a great moment--just two seconds, really--when Ruehl decides to surprise her husband while standing at Kennedy Airport under an advertsiing sign that says, "Miami is for Lovers": her goofy look of inspiration is priceless). But the film in the end belongs to Michelle Pfeiffer, as the hapless heroine, the widowed wife of a mob enforcer. This was the film that really made Pfeiffer a star. Years before she began to perfect the irritating mannerisms that marred her work in the Nineties, she manages to make her character's sufferings and her innate goodness seem immensely touching and also, almost bewilderingly, deeply funny. She has a great date at a salsa club with Matthew Modine's character that remains one of the greatest first dates in film history: watch especially for their little dance outside the Criminal Justice Building in the outtakes during the closing credits.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wanna divwohwse!!
This is my favorite line from this movie- delivered in the a dead-on "lwong oisland" accent by stunning Michelle Pfeiffer (who looks great as a brunette). She is simply great as the mob wife who takes advantage of the untimeley death of her oily mobster husband (a great job by an early, thin Alec Baldwin), and moves to Manhattan's lower east side and a new life in a single apartment complete with bathtub in the kitchen only to find that her husband's boss (and killer- a deservedly Oscar Nominated Dean Stockwell) has pointed his roving, uh, eye in her direction. Add to the mix Matthew Modine as the FBI agent who falls for her (and who wouldn't- she is radiant in this), the ever-delightful Mercedes Ruehl as the crazy-in-love mob boss' wife, and Joan Cusack, Nancy Travis and Ellen Foley as her circle of "friends" (with their outsized makeup and huge mops of ratted hair, they look like some trio 0f '80's Long Island Medusas), as well as Oliver Platt as Modine's hapless partner, great Miami- kitsch locations and really great music and you will have two really fun-filled hours. Too bad Jonathon Demme got all stuffy and commercial with "Silence of the Lambs" and "Philadelphia"

5-0 out of 5 stars Pfieffer shines!
This is a great film. FUN FUN FUN and Funny too. Pfieffer does such a great job in this role, as does Alec Baldwin and Mathew Modine. A terrifically fun film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just another Mafia comedy
Angela DeMarco (Michelle Pfeiffer) whose husband Frank (Alec Baldwin), a mob hitman who has just been "iced" himself, desparately wants to make a new life for herself and her 7 year old son. That would mean moving out of her posh home furnished with stolen merchandise and giving up her friendships with the wives of the mob leaders. She can hardly wait. The problem is that the mob boss, Tony Russo (Dean Stockwell), won't let Angela alone. Tony is a ladies' man and happens to have a crush on Angela.

"Married to the Mob" is one funny flick. Michelle Pfeiffer is absolutely perfect in the role of the hitman's widow. Besides being an incredibly gorgeous and street wise woman, she is altogether convincing and sympathetic as the Mafia wife. Dean Stockwell lends to his role as the fearless Mafia boss just the right touch of dignity and bravado mixed with a droll, deadpan personality that is just right for the part. Mercedes Ruehl is side-splittingly hilarious as mob boss Stockwell's insanely jealous wife, Connie, who is the only person that her husband truly fears. Ruehl steals every scene that she is in. I personally feel that Matthew Modine was miscast in the role of the F.B.I. man and Pfeiffer's protector and love interest, but Modine did a satisfactory job in the role.

The movie contains quite a bit of violence, as necessitated by the movie's theme, but the body count acts as a perfect counterpart to this often zany and, yes, loveable film.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites!
"Married to the Mob" is a very funny movie about an Italian Mob Wife who wants out. It is one of my ultimate favorite movies of all time because it is so funny, so well acted, and pure fun to watch. Michelle Pfieffer stars as Angela Demarco, the wife of Frankie "Cucumber" Demarco(played by Alec Baldwin) and mother to 7 year old Joey.
Frustrated by the lifestyle, she just wants to start over fresh and have a second chance for a good life. She asks for a divorce, which is ignored. Then Frankie and his mistress get iced by the big boss, Tony "The Tiger" Russo, played by Dean Stockwell, who roars as this cool mob boss. Angela is beside herself, and ready to move out and on with her life. She moves out of the neighborhood and into a tenament in a seedy looking neighborhood. She plans to get a job and raise her son on her own.
She is then being unknowingly surveillanced by the FBI, and Agent Mike Dowling(Matthew Modine) becomes interested in her.
Young Pfeiffer and Modine seem to have a little chemistry going in the movie. They are very cute together.
Once Frank is dead, Tony tries to seduce Angela. His wife, Connie, played by a hilarious Mercedes Ruehl who is just wonderful in this role, tries to stop it. Tony tries and fails several times.
Mike falls hard for Angela, but eventually she finds out that the FBI is behind it all. They want to use her to get Tony.
Chaos ensues with comedy following. All the actors in this movie work so well together, too. I liked every performance in the movie. Pfeiffer being the best. She plays the character with zest and the accent is perfect!
It is a movie I intend to purchase soon as I just don't tire of it's upbeat, funny, and romantic story.
Highly recommended!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Movie!!!
I enjoyed this film so much I later bought a copy of the video and the soundtrack. The animation is superb -- I love the way they have Spirit rearing while the rest of the herd gallops swiftly past him, and the wind blows his hair about in a very realistic way. The music is terrific, and the horses move and sound like real horses. This is a great film to watch if you enjoy seeing pictures of beautiful wild horses running free in green meadows. The opening scene, where you follow the flight of an eagle through the American west -- is breathtaking.
Spirit's story is riveting and heart-warming -- his saga keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end of the movie. One of the saddest scenes is when he's captured by the cowboys who turn him over to an army general (the voice, oddly enough, belongs to the same guy who played the gentle farmer in "Babe.") The general treats Spirit cruelly by depriving him of food and water for three days in the hot sun, hoping to break his spirit, which he fails to do. But then Spirit escapes with the help of a new friend, Little Creek, a kind and considerate Indian brave. Little Creek's horse, Rain is a spirited and charming paint mare. At first she and Spirit have a clash of wills, but later they develop a strong bond. Spirit is kidnapped again during an army raid on the Indian camp, but he escapes and meets up with Little Creek, and they return together to what is left of the camp. I love the ending of the film, when Spirit and Rain run back to Spirit's herd and are standing together on top of a hill with the wind blowing their hair.
Delightful as the film is, however, there is a note of warning: The horses in this film do not talk, but communicate by neighing, snorting and whinnying. If listening to these natural horse sounds for an hour or so drives you crazy, you might want to steer clear of this film. I've spent a lot of time around horses, so I know what these various sounds mean, but other people might not. However, I think it's an unusual -- and refreshing -- approach to an animated film.
This is one incredible movie! Definitely five stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie!!! Wonderful Animation! Poor Sound Track...
I really enjoyed Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron! The animation was pretty, the plot engrossing and the emotions of humans and their horse companions well portrayed.

Spirit is a young buckskin stallion, the leader of his herd. Raised by his mother, a single-mom palomino, Spirit has never before met a human until he spies a distant campfire. Overcome with curiosity he investigates, only to find a group of soldiers and unhappy horses in bridles and saddles. Overcome with mischief, Spirit taunts the men, with disastrous consequences: The men follow him back to his own herd and threaten his mother and friends!

Spirit leads the men away from his herd, only to be captured and taken to the human fort.

I found this movie to be moving, the graphics pretty, and the tale a young horse 'remaining steadfast and holding true to his belief in freedom, despite imprisonment, ill treatment' quite engrossing.

The only thing I DIDN'T like about Spirit was the sound track. Bleh. Bryan Adam's nasally whining was awfully and did not suit the tone of the movie at all. (A folk musician, or a Native American artist would've suited this film more).

I give this movie 5 stars for the gorgeous animation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beware Horse Experts
I think that Spirit was a great movie. I have only a few warnings. If you are a complete horse expert and can't stand to see one little thing wrong about the movie such as eyebrows on the horse or horses in love, DON'T WATCH IT! I REPEAT, DON'T WATCH IT!!!!! It's a really good movie for families, even though some perfectionists hate it. I thought it was great and you really should get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie For Children!
I'm an 11 kid and I loved this movie! I've never really noticed or cared about it until my aunt (18) watched it with my little cousin and said it was good. So the next day we watched it and oh my gosh, it's soo sad! There's also some funny parts too, should I say it? Well, when they capture Spirit he starts kicking this guy and it's really hilarious! This movie is about a horse named Spirit which is captured by these people. They capture him because Spirit is one of the strong horses and they need him. Spirit needs to free the other horses and get back to his home with his group. On the way, he meets this charming mare that he is attracted to. They make an awefully cute couple! At some points, Spirit runs away from the bad people and at other points, they suddenly show up and try to capture him again. Nobody can ride him really, except this kind Indian. I shouldn't really tell you the whole ending but let's just say that, everything turned out to be great! If you want to hear more about it, get it! This is a great movie for children just like Finding Nemo!

2-0 out of 5 stars Spirit
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimirron is a coming-of-age story about a stallion named Spirit growing up in the Wild West. We see just how brutaly these animals were treated, but its hard to feel sorry for any of them. The movie progresses from Spirit's childhood, to his capture by the United States Cavalry, to his friendship with a Lakota teenager, his eventual falling in love, and his return home. All the while we are "treated" to Bryan Adam's soft rock music. Remember him? I don't either. Not to mention Matt Damon's corny voice-overs for Spirit, who, like all the animals in the film, doesn't speak directly. For example, "My heart galloped across the sky that night, back to the herd."

Possibly the best scene is the action sequence where a locomotive being hauled up a mountain by the horses breaks loose and tumbles down the embankment, starting a forest fire, but maybe that's just my other bias towards trains. The opening shot was beautiful, too. The camera follows a bald eagle flying through the spectacular vistas of the American West. But two good scenes aren't enough to save this boring tribute to tree-huggers everywhere. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Top notch animation with a mediocre story
Set in the western frontier when the buffaloes still roamed the great plains, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron follows the exploits of a wild mustang. A leader by birth, the movie tells the tale of his first encounter with humans, a journey that will change his life forever.

Narrated by Matt Damon as the voice of the mustang, one thing you'll notice immediately is the lack of dialogues, there weren't a lot of speaking parts in this film, and I applaud Dreamworks for taking such an unique approach. Due to this fact, the animators took great pains to humanize the horses, giving them emotions and personalities such as curiosity, pride and humor. For this reason alone, it might be hard for smaller children to sit through the entire movie, especially ones that have a short attention span.

As always the animation is top notch, something we have all come to expect of Dreamworks. The portrayal of the beasts were very realistic, it was exhilirating to see them in action, galloping through the fields and leaping over cliffs, they were simply breath taking. Another thing worth noting is the fantastic soundtrack, with a score by Hans Zimmer and vocal music performed by Bryan Adams, I thought they were very appropriate and easy to listen to with some great lyrics.

I admit to having misgivings on seeing a film about horses, and even though I found Spirit to have a mediocre story and a predicatble plot, I was nevertheless pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the experience. It lacks the humor of Shrek, and the charm of Chicken Run, but Spirit is a worthy addition in the Dreamwork's growing list of animated pictures. Be sure to take your family to see it this Memorial Day weekend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great family movie, also for those who like horses.
Originally got this dvd for my 3 y.o. son. Dreamworks really did their homework regarding the animation for the equine and its intricate movements. The animation combined with CG is stunning, especially the opening sequence where you follow the flight of an eagle thru all these panoramic vistas of the open wild west. Unlike other reviewers I thought that the Hans Zimmer music and Bryan Adams' lyrics and singing really added to the movie as the words were the conscience for Spirit who does not talk but is spoken thru the narration of Matt Damon. Maybe a little overdone on the PC (bad white men/soldiers), never thought too feel so much emotion for a cartoon character, especially an animal in its quest to be free again to return home. Overall Dreamworks did a top notched job.

But two good scenes aren't enough to save this boring tribute to tree-huggers everywhere. ... Read more

Alec Baldwin should have had an Oscar nomination for his cunning performance as Frederick J. Frenger Jr., the sleek sociopath and master of quicksilver improvisation who sets the pace for this deceptively breezy crime comedy. Junior's a genius in his fashion, yet not especially bright. In moments of repose, his mouth has a way of falling open slightly, like that of an animal panting in the shade, or Marilyn Monroe thinking. Miami Blues, written and directed by George Armitage, from the novel by Charles Willeford, divides its attention among Junior and two other characters who, in their respective ways, are as eccentric as he: Susie (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a room-service hooker enrolled at Miami-Dade Community College who dreams of acquiring middle-class stability (say, a Burger King franchise); and Hoke Moseley (Fred Ward), a Miami P.D. detective with false choppers who gets on Junior’s trail. Junior and Susie set up housekeeping in Coral Gables, and when Hoke catches up to his quarry, he sits down in the couple's newly rented kitchen and joins them in a meal of pork chops and beer. At which point--well, see for yourselves.

Jonathan Demme coproduced Miami Blues, and the movie operates as a companion piece to Demme's black-comedy meditation on the elusiveness of contentment in these United States, Something Wild ('86). The three principal actors are all terrific, but it's through Susie--and by all means Jennifer Jason Leigh's complex portrait of this down-to-earth creature--that Miami Blues finally touches a deep, abiding sadness, and the bruised tenaciousness of the American Dream. --Richard T. 5-0 out of 5 stars a great dark comedy!
I bought this dvd at the same time I bought To Live and Die in L.a. and really enjoy both movies. This is a very under-rated movie that has comedy, action and quasi-romance. The acting is great and there is not one bad scene in the movie. The dvd is a little disappointing in that it has absolutely no extras, unlike To Live and Die in L.a., which has great extras. The movie more than makes up for that though and can be enjoyed again and again. I put it in the same league as The Way of the Gun, True Romance, and Reservoir Dogs. If you like that kind of violent comedy, this is for you...

5-0 out of 5 stars cool
when i noticed this movie on tv i decided to give it a chance. boy was i happy about that. it's a really good action movie. i've never seen better acting in a action movie. i'm usually into those buddy cop movies. well i liked this allot and will probably buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This movie rocks
Just an all around great movie. The directing is outstanding and you are never bored. Alec Baldwin does a superb job of portraying a Pysco criminal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sleeper Which Knocks Your Socks Off
Never writing a review of one of my favorite movies is a major oversight on my part. "Miami Blues," adapted from a book by Charles Willeford, is a movie which has great impact. Alec Baldwin portrays Frederic Frenger Jr. (aka "Junior"), a man whose middle name should be "Trouble." He is a person capable of anything at any time. Arriving in Florida after his release from prison, Frenger instantly starts up with his modus operandi. Forging some documents in order to attain someone else's identity (the drugged Herman Gottlieb), he walks through the airport and is confronted by a Hari Krishni member; without hesitation, Junior breaks one of the man's fingers. The man dies. This sets up the plot. Frenger is now wanted for homicide. We are introduced to Hoke Mosely, a nicely drawn character. He's a career cop out to get to the bottom of the Hari Krishna's demise. He's told someone with a "suede sportcoat" was the culprit -- this is Junior in Herman Gottlieb's clothing.

We find Junior shacked up in a seedy hotel, where he hooks up with Jennifer Jason Leigh's character, Susie. She's a simple gal from Florida who is working her way through college engaged in the "oldest profession." They take to each other instantly and decide to move in together. As a newly formed couple, the dialogue between the conniving psychopath and the honest prostitute with a heart of gold is hilarious as they talk about their future ... with Mosely hot on the trail.

Won't give anymore details except to say this movie will not disappoint. Solid performances of well-drawn characters. Alec Baldwin, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Fred Ward (as Sgt. Hoke Mosely) are exceptional. Look for Paul Gleason (of "The Breakfast Club" and "Trading Places") as a crooked cop. As usual, his trademark style and character are very entertaining.

Miami Blues: A movie to buy, see again every so often, and discuss with friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars "I fired a warning shot... and it hit ya!"
Set in the backdrop of early 90s Miami pastel and art deco, this intelligent movie mandates your full attention. Most of the hilarious scenes in Miami Blues can be overlooked if you blink at the wrong moment, which is good for watching the minute details over and over. The gags are quick... and when they happen, they're gone.
I can't comment on Alec Baldwin's "tight black shorts" response of one male reviewer since I am not a homosexual. Pufties notwithstanding, this is a great movie with a great ending. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Some minor flaws but a good story
I was riveted to this film the first time I saw it. I loved the period piece and the authenticity of the time they were capturing. My dad and mom both agreed it kept with the time. I especially loved the Rosie the Riveter aspect, as that character always intrigued me and Goldie does an excellent job in filling that role. This type of setting and story probably happened hundreds of times across the US during the Pearl Harbor days. Maybe others feel it wraps up too pat (like a typical Hollywood ending) but I felt it was true to what probably happened in those days. I love this film for all the marvelous acting and pairing Goldie with Kurt was great casting. They do it again in Overboard, another often overlooked Goldie film. I would recommend this film for anyone who likes historical fiction and who enjoys Goldie & Kurt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not great, but has several strengths
This is the story of a woman, played by Goldie Hawn, whose husband goes off to fight in World War II, and she goes to work in a factory. There she meets Kurt Russell, and sparks fly. The romance story is interwoven with the theme of women entering the U.S. work-force in large numbers.

The strengths of the film lie in the acting of Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, and especially Christine Lahti, who played Hawn's best friend. Another strength is the atmosphere created. My father was born in 1924 and served in WWII. He and several of his Army buddies have seen this film, separately, and all made the same comment: the clothes, the cars, the language, the buildings, the everything is very, very authentic, and the feel of WWII was very accurately recreated.

The film's weakness is its disjointed script, which I understand underwent several rewrites. That's a shame, as all the ingredients were here for a great movie. It's still a good movie, though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good (not great) WWII story with good performances
You may have heard how the original cut of this film was considered great until Goldie Hawn demanded re-shooting to further elevate her character's story. Regardless, it still is a fun movie to watch.

Jonathan Demme re-creates a very believable 1940's Santa Monica, CA and the lives of the women who worked in the war factories. Everyone in this film delivers the goods - including Hawn, but Christine Lahti literally steals the show (despite Goldie's re-takes) as the dance hall singer turned riveter. I loved all the scenes inside the airplane factory where they work. Not only do we have Hawn, Lahti and Kurt Russell, but a great supporting cast including Holly Hunter, Ed Harris, Sudie Bond and Fred Ward.

5-0 out of 5 stars great WWII movie
I love this movie. If you like movies set in wwII you will love this. It gives the point of view from a woman(Goldie Hawn) what it's like when her husband goes off to war. She gets a job building airplanes and makes some new friends while her husbands away at war. I hope I helped.

2-0 out of 5 stars WW II Melodrama
The movie is a take-off on the WWII legendary "Rosie the Riveter".It begins with the broadcast of the attack on Pearl Harbor. An ordinary working Joe returns to his home somewhere in Southern California to his loving wife(Goldie Hawn). He then tells his tearful spouse that it was his duty to fight the Japanese. She swears eternal devotion and faithfulness until his return. After all young men have gone to join the fight an aircraft plant needs riveters and pleads for women to come to work.Goldie Hawn and it seems all women go to work at the plant. Hawn is is then romantically persued by a young supervisor, resists on moral grounds but eventually out of bordoom and loneliness falls in love with him.Predictably there are recriminations and accusations the morning after.Subsequently the husband comes home on leave, finds out,is crushed and goes back to fight the war. The lover has then an affair with Goldie Hawn's best friend and it is now her turn to fall to pieces.Eventually the war is over, the husband returns, the wife confesses her shame and begs to be forgiven. He relents and forgives, the wife forgives her best friend, the lover goes away to New York and everything is hanky- dory. The screeplay is a heap of stale devices and familiar screen constructions.Sentimental:The farewell scene of husband and wife and the notification of the death of a Marine husband to a fellow riveter.Bravura:Narrow escape and the saving of life of her best friend by Goldie Hawn.Technical:Boring instruction on riveting, endles fly- overs of planes, real or made to look real excerpts of newsreels. The plot is faithful to the working-class identity of the forties and the characters and the story do not hide it.This maybe inten- ded and makes the movie appear to be realistic but ultimately boring. The film may be interesting to people who have not lived in that span of time or to those who have for nostalgic reasons. ... Read more

Anchor Bay's Incredible Hulk double-disc set offers The Incredible Hulk Returns (1988) and The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989), the first two of three made-for-TV movies featuring the Marvel Comics monster hero that aired after the CBS series' demise in 1982. Both discs also include a considerable amount of supplemental material, including interviews with star Lou Ferrigno and comic book legend Stan Lee. Bill Bixby returns as tormented scientist David Banner (in addition to executive producing Returns and directing Trial), as does Ferrigno as his green-skinned alter ego. In both titles, they are paired with other Marvel creations; in Returns, Banner is joined by the Mighty Thor to thwart industrial espionage, and in Trial, he's defended by blind lawyer Matt Murdock (Rex Smith), a.k.a. Daredevil. Bixby's always-credible presence brings believability to the fanciful storylines, and both features have the right mix of drama and action that should satisfy fans of the series and its graphic origins alike. --Paul Gaita ... 3-0 out of 5 stars 3 ninjas are at it again !!!
Well this is the 3rd installment on the series and to say it was ok but it was not as good as the other two.The original Rocky and Tum Tum return for there 3rd and last returns as the ninjas. The movie about a man that was dumping a lot of waste in the land where the indian people left and they help a girl that is looking for here father that has a disc that contains the chemicals there dumping in the fields.I really like the movie and there was alot of comedy and action but overal its alright but not as good as the other two.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXELLENT!
It was an exellent movie.I liked it just as much as the first one.I have watched 3 Ninjas about 600 times(I'm not joking)and 3 Ninjas Knuckle Up about 135 times and I still watch them regularly. The other 2 just twice each.I am crazy about MICHAEL TREANOR and i would like it if you could send me all the information you can find on him.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great kids movie
My godson started watching this movie, which we bought when my 14 year old daughter was much younger. He loves this movie and is driving his parents crazy with it, so I have now ordered the other two so there will be a little variety. He is almost 4 and sometimes watches this 4 or 5 times a day (if he can get by with it). A great movie for your children!!

5-0 out of 5 stars good movie
Its a good movie that kids and adults can enjoy. The movie is about three brothers, ( Samuel aka rocky. Jeffery aka colt and Michael aka tum tum) whose grandfather is teaching them martial arts during the summer when they go to stay with him. durring the summer colt gets into a fight saving a girl who has bigger problems than they ever dreamed of.

2-0 out of 5 stars !READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY!
First, I would like to say that I did not enjoy this movie as much as I had hoped to and was very dissapointed. This movie was done on a very low budget, that is part of the reason why it turned out to be bad.The story was horrible and i did not like it at all.You will find a much much better story in "3 Ninjas Kick Back",which is also a much much better movie. The fighting scenes in this movie were terrible, and very poorly choreographed. When you watch the boys fight the bad guys it looks sooooooo fake because their just standing there and pretending to be hurt and waiting for the kids to attack them. These totally fake fight scenes take out the fun in the movie.

Horrible story and fight scenes terribly done.I think these are two perfect reasons for avoiding this movie.Instead you should buy "3 Ninjas Kick Back" wich is a great movie and was done amazingly. You won't be dissapointed, trust me.I think it is the best one in the series!Second best would be the first one.

You might be wondering why I gave this movie two stars if I did not like so much.Well I am too big of a fan of the series to give it only one star:) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars good idea but bad come out
Fred Williamson(Black Ceasar, From Dusk Till Dawn) is John Bookman and he returns home after his father is shot up by a gang called the rebels, a gang he formed back in his day, led by Spyro and Damien..two ruthless thugs who changed the gang from what it used to be, the rebels think they own the streets. well Bookman and co. join forces to try to stop them. an allstar cast including Jim Brown(Mars Attacks,Salughter) Ron O'Neal(Superfly), Pam Grier(Ghost Of Mars, Foxy Brown, Jackie Brown), Paul Winfield(Mars Attacks, The Terminator), Richard Roundtree(Antitrust, Shaft, Corky Romando) and many more. takes its toll on the 70's black films but is too much uninspired with wooden performances and a lack of, anything...was expecting much more

4-0 out of 5 stars A violent reunion from back in the day
The reason to watch this movie is the reunion for those of us who remember the protagonists from the era of blaxploitation films in which we were introduced to them/ Fred Williamson, Jim Brown, Pam Grier, reconvene to take back their home town of Gary, Indiana from several well organized and terribly violent street gangs.

Also appearing in almost cameo roles are Ron O'Neal ("Superfly") and Richard Roundtree (the original John Shaft). Seeing them all together is a treat, but left me wondering why this quintet did not get more screen time all together. It is particularly pleasing to see Brown and Grier, who, as one of the expert reviewers noted, have aged very very well. However, the re-ignition of their former relationship is tepid and seemingly forced. By contrast, it has nowhere near the intensity seen when barely restrained Brown confronts a gang leader about the murder of his son.

I agree that the simplistic plot and the consistent (and predictable) violence keep this from being one of the great films of our time. Those who remember the first time seeing these individuals in character now some thirty years ago will enjoy seeing them all together again, and that makes this disc worthwhile.

3-0 out of 5 stars great re-union of 70's actionmovie st ars
if your a film buff, and wanted to see just outta curiosity
what happened to the black star's of the early 70's...see this movie, sorry to say that most of the aging star's except for pam grier now could be cast in a new version of sanford and son...as fred's old buddies from the hood drinking
grape ripple. it was a good social commentary of life in gary,
indiana and how dependent that city was on the steel mills and the off shoot business's that gradually closed down, see this movie on a saturday afternoon,,,but if you have to mow the lawn or paint the house...you'd be better off doing that.

3-0 out of 5 stars An solid comeback for an action movie vet--
Original Gangstas: Fred Williamson, Jim Brown, Pam Grier. Williamson is John Bookman, former football pro turned coach, who comes back to his old hometown to find it overrun by gangs. The last straw is when Bookman's dad is assaulted and his grocery store vandalized. Grier is the mom of a basketball prodigy slain by the Rebels, one of three major gangs in the city. Brown is Bookman's best friend who comes back to bury his son. In a touch of irony, the gangs are the modern day incarnation of the crews started by Bookman & his friends decades ago. But whereas the original intent was to be a teen militia of sorts, the modern crews-mostly people well over 21-- are about nothing but victimizing their neighborhood.

Filmed entirely on location in Gary, Indiana, the film uses many city landmarks to illustrate the decay that has taken place. The film rightly postulates that the abrupt downsizing of the US Steel mill in the late 60's started an economic domino effect that the city has yet to recover from. Abandoned storefronts still abound, while neighborhoods are peppered with derelict houses and other rag-tag buildings.
Supporting roles are offered by Robert Forster as a police detective, and Ron O'Neal & Richard Roundtree as longtime residents who join the effort to take the city back.

Williamson and his contemporaries first came to prominence in the black action movie trend of the 70's. Some of his real life was slipped into the script: Williamson was a Northwestern football star before turning pro; also, according to the star the film was inspired from an encounter he had while visiting his mother, who still lives in Gary.

Fred and the actors of his generation deserve better from the Hollywood industry-- folks like Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez have used them in a handful of contemporary films, but they should have the status of a Clint Eastwood or Burt Reynolds..

3-0 out of 5 stars ORIGINAL GANGSTAS Review
In a reunion of the big-name 70's blaxplotation stars, you can expect a whole lot of fun. They're all here. Fred "The Hammer" Williamson, Jim Brown, Pam "Foxxy Brown" Grier, Richard "Shaft" Roudntree, and Superfly himself, Ron O'Neal. A host of other infamous character actors and some of today's big name underground rappers also show up for this bullet-riddled nostalgia pic.

It's "old school" versus "new school" as the Rebels, a gang once known simply for protecting their neighborhood has transformed into a gang of thugs who specialize in drive-by shootings and drug dealing. This doesn't sit well with the gang's founding members who reunite with the support of the community to clean up the streets once and for all.

While not nearly as energetic and entertaining as many of the 70's pics that it is paying homage to, "Original Gangstas" does have fun while delivering a solid anti-violence message. Seeing all your old favorites strap up again makes for some real good times. There are also some good performances from relative unknowns like Christopher Duncan as the leader of the new Rebels and rapper Dru Down as the group's loud-mouthed "trigger man". Also look for rappers, Scarface and Bushwick Bill in cameos. A genuine good time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So Breathtaking Your Spirit Will Be On A Journey
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron was one of those movies that left you amazed. This movie has beautiful animation, trasporting you to the beauty of America's Old West. The music captures the emotions of the scenes, and this movie is very powerful. This movie starts out as when Spirit is born. Year later he grows into a fine stallion and Mustang. He is now the leader of his herd, the Cimarron. Here he runs free, running with the eagle, feeling like he can fly. There is nothing but freedom and happiness, something we all want for our world. Yet one night, Spirit stumbles upon humans at their camp, and his adventure begins. He is taken captive by the US Army stationed in the West, for this was the time the railroad was being built in America. Here he learns the pain, hardship, and sorrow of not being free. He is away from his loving herd and mother, now with these creatures he doesn't trust. He sees what captured horses are turned into, and he asks help from them. They want to help, but they seem to have no hope and strength. Yet, Spirit won't give up on getting his freedom back. He has something in him that rekindles himself, and he turns into the wild Mustang he is. No matter how many times men try to break him, each one flying off. Of course, this entertains the horses. But, the head of the Army in the West ties him to the post, and here Spirit meets someone. A Lakota Native American, Little Creek, is captured as well, and he is too enchanted by the appearence of Spirit. Someway somehow he gets free, with the help of Little Creek. Spirit does wonder, why this one helped him and isn't cruel like the others? Little Creek whistles up other members of his Lakota tribe, and Spirit meets someone else. It's Little Creek's horse, Rain, a beautiful painted mare. For a couple more days Spirit stays with Rain, and she teaches him trust, love, and kindness in man. Spirit now seems changed in his thinking of man, and learns of Rain's way of life. But at one point Little Creek knows no one will ride Spirit, and lets him go. But Spirit is torn between his freedom and Rain, who he seems now to love. He wants Rain to join him, but she is still loyal to Little Creek. Spirit now wants to show her his homeland and way of life, which she accepts. But now that is shattered, for the US Army sieges the Lakota tribe of Little Creek. Both horses rush to save Little Creek, and this part is heartwrenching. With Little Creek on her back, Rain is injured by a gunshot, splashing in the raging rapids of the water. Little Creek is about to be shot as well, but Spirit saves him by knocking down the man with the gun, the leader of the US Army. Spirit jumps in to save Rain, and both fall down the waterfall. Rain is still hurt, in pain by her wound. Spirit never wants to leave her, but is taken away by members of the Army. Little Creek now knows he has to repay Spirit for what he did. Now Spirit seems to think he will never be free, now in a train with other captured horses. They look to him with hopeful faces, thinking Spirit will save them again. But they see Spirit's expression, now thinking too all hope is gone. But now again Spirit frees horses, including himself. He and other horses were pulling up a part of the train, but now getting his Mustang spirit back in him, which led to this freedom. Little Creek now rescues Spirit from dying in flames, and returns him to his tribe. Yet now Spirit is sad, for he thinks Rain is dead. But out of the smoke of a small fire, a painted mare with a feather in her mane steps out, tall and beautiful. Rain and Spirit have a joyous reunion, but now Little Creek decided to let his two friends go. Little Creek says to Spirit after bidding farewell to his trusted horse Rain, "Goodbye Spirit, One Who Could Not Be Broken." Now both are free, and Spirit is reunited with his herd and mother. Spirit will truly never forget Little Creek and how he learned to trust, love, and enjoy life. Now Spirit is free, ready to fly with his friend the eagle, and to soar through on his wings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully done! Wonderful for children!
This is truly one of the best movies I have ever seen! I highly recommend this for a child of any age. I hope Dreamworks continues to produce movies like this one. Children should be children and not fed a daily diet of violence and innuendo. This DVD is wonderful! The animation is breathtaking; stunningly beautiful.
A must have for your collection!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great film for all
I bought this for the kids, but we watch it right along with them over nad over. Great Movie.

1-0 out of 5 stars THE WORST MOVIE ON EARTH!
If there was only a way I could give this 0 stars. The story, animation, music, script, direction,& technically EVERY SINGLE THING ABOUT THIS GODAWFUL MOVIE IS DOWNRIGHT TERRIBLE,HORRIBLE,BAD,NO GOOD,NON-REALISTIC,& IT-NEVER-COULD-HAPPEN-IN-A-MILLION-YEARS!!Why does everybody like this movie? "It made my cry" many people say. But is this movie sad at any time? ANY time? Nooooooooooooo. DO NOT WATCH THIS. IT CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR EYES. I WARNED YOU. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Better!
I watched this movie after watching some other Pauley Shore movies that I liked and though Jury Duty had it's moments and wasn't the worst movie I have ever seen it was a bit of a disappointment as I really didn't think it was as funny as it could have been though I think they really tried to make it work but for me it just fell flat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank god that this is gonna be released on DVD!
I've been waiting for this one for some while to be on DVD, the movie itself is a great and funny yet entertaining comedy starring Pauly Shore as a Freeloader who becomes a juror on the biggest trial in America and wants to have it as a vacation.
I've had this movie since 2001 when i first saw it in late 2000 when i loved it! It's got fine acting, a witty script and a decent plot. This is one of the greatest movies i've ever seen in my life, i CAN'T WAIT FOR THE DVD!!!!
Long live Jury Duty!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Wish I Could Rate It A Zero!
I like Pauley Shore and I have absolutely no problem with raunchy and idiotic humor but for some reason I just didn't like this movie and it just didn't do anything for me but make me wonder why I watched it!

Pauley Shore has made some good movies but sadly Jury Duty isn't one of them, I would pass on this one and watch Biodome instead or In The Army Now they are far superior!

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a "Laugh so hard that you can't breathe" movie
This movie is two thumbs up. It's a great movie ot watch with a gorup of friends who enjoy a really good laugh. The characters in this movie are so specific and all have their own little quirks and ways of doing things. Pauly Shore has an oblivious yet somehow smart way of looking at life and hte situation that arises. The stupidly comic way of getting the others on his side pulls it otgether, along with all of the minor little things that stand out somehow (like hte song the man sings in front of the court house or Peanut's love of Jeopardy) make it all too funny. I've recommended this to all of my friends. Give it a try and watch it. Once you do, it won't be your last.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Pauley's best movie!
I like Pauley Shore I have seen him in other movies that I liked so I made the mistake of buying the Jury Duty video because I liked In The Army Now and Bio-Dome and assumed I would like this too, well I learned my lesson well and I learned it the hard way and wasted my money and I have learned to never assume I will like a movie because I liked the actor in another movie and from now on I will rent the movie first! Jury Duty simply was just plain awful with it's weak, boring plot and unfunny humor! In The Army Now and Bio-Dome were a lot funnier, and if you want to kick back, relax and laugh your [backside] off than watch those movies! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great family western
i really loved this movie i do not like westerns but this movie kept me on my seat it has a lot of action corbin bernsen really plays a great westerner. highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great family entertainment, good clean fun.
My kids really like Savage Land, and know just about every line of dialogue, as well as all of the lyrics to the songs performed by the Kansas City Thrush. Charming kids, very likable female leads, and a good bunch of funny bad guys makes this film very accessible and enjoyable for family entertainment. Can't wait for the DVD version, and hope there will be some bonus features (hint-hint?)

4-0 out of 5 stars Adventure In The Great Outdoors
Two children, and two single women struggle to survive after their stagecoach is ambushed; Gunslinger Vivian Schilling should have shot the painfully dreadful Singer Charlotte Ross to move the film up to five stars. Otherwise, great cast, great script and a lot of fun. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars More naughty fun from Russ Meyer, the "DD grade" King.
This Russ Meyer classic opens with a disclaimer heralding the importance of free speech- a movie that David Lame and cobbers will abhore. Which is GOOD for us "jackbooted liberals" "lacking in moralistic backbone". (YOU'RE reading this, so you must be. Right? ha ha ha)
As expected, Russ has filled every possible frame with shots of tight female buns and big bouncy jubblies. One wouldn't expect any less from the "titular" Grandmaster of sexploitation.
CHERRY, HARRY AND RAQUEL's threadbare plot is supposed to center around marijuana smuggling in a small town in the Arizona desert. It's good to see Meyer is clearly anti-drug, which will annoy my other fave people, The NZ Green Party.
Scripted by Meyer and author Tom "Bonfire Of The Vanities" Wolfe from Meyer's story, the movie stars Charles Napier ( later better known as Murdock from RAMBO 2) as Harry, Larissa Ely as Raquel and Linda Ashton as Cherry the nurse; who early on gives a dirty old man a bed bath. Lucky Gramps. As you'd guess from the title, this is a love triangle with lots of hetero and lesbian sex scenes. Meyer also tosses in a scattering of gore; though personally what I found most disturbing was the brief full-frontal of Napier running along a beach with his wobbly bits bouncing left, right and centre. Crikey Russ, people don't pay to see your movies to be subjected to gratuitious salami shots!
That's my sole complaint, but that will give women a reason for watching this. Anything to help spread the disease,so to speak (How un P.C of me). As with his earlier movie BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS Meyer concludes the film with a philosophical, moralistic narrative, which is more sensible than anything the SPCS can attempt to force down the NZ public's throats (This movie was made in 1969. Just goes to show how out of date NZ is). But don't worry guys, Russ has generously insterspersed his moral reasoning with a montage of T&A shots from the movie, just to help jog your memory. This is the most fun you can pack into 70 minutes. Eat your black
