The bad news is that as great as this film looks and is acted (at times, it seems to bring to mind Comedy Central's "Strangers with Candy" for the way the actors play many things straight), the film suffers from "Saturday Night Live" sketch syndrome: it goes on too long and runs out of humor steam. An hour or 45 minutes would have been sufficient for the film's running time. The plot gets stretched and by the time Evie's "speciamercial" revelation occurs, I wasn't laughing anymore. The sense of glee was wearing thin, and not even the pool party flashbacks could perk the film up again. Plus, the "naked" Evie was pretty gross and unnecessary. All in all, a decent film with a generous portion of extras on the DVD.
If you're uptight and can't take an abortion or rape joke here-and-there, than this is not your thing. But if you're an intelligent person with a sense of humor who is at least mildly urbane, you'll love it. If only for the sets. Or if only for the one liners. Or if only for the performances. Highly recommended.
I was shocked I loved the hell out of this movie considering it was made in someone's house and starred 3 drag queens. I am not a huge fan of the female illusionist, but here it worked to broaden out the already broad comedy! Seriously picture a real woman after being asked if she's ever had an abortion saying "Honey! I've had more kids ripped out of me than a burning ORPHANAGE!" No, only a man in a frock could deliver that and make you giggle. And giggle and laugh is exactly what I did in this whole film! It's a hoot! If you like your comedy broad and crass this is your movie! And the special features are not too bad either! You get animated menus with the cast, deleted scenes, a trailer, and a pretty entertaining commentary from the director and cast. IT'S A SPECIMERCIAL! IT'S HUGE! ... Read more | |

Planning for her wedding to law professor Emmet Richmond (Luke Wilson), Elle Woods becomes determined to (Witherspoon) track down the biological parent of her Chihuahua, Bruiser. Elated to find the dog belongs to Versace, Elle is shocked to find that the animal (and countless others) is subjected to testing by cosmetics makers. Losing her job at a tony law firm when she tries to make an issue of animal testing, Elle heads for Washington where she hopes to change the law. Linking up with an apparently successful and sympathetic congresswoman played by Sally Field, and learning the ways of Washington D.C.-style politics, LB2 essentially follows the pattern of the first movie - replacing law with cut-throat politics (initially hostile characters prove to be friends while friendly characters turn out to have their own agenda; Elle wins out over all using her mix of wackiness and wisdom). The flick makes good use of some side characters, like Bruce McGill as a right-wing conservative who, luckily for Elle, is a proud dog owner (McGill may best be remembered as the mysterious "D-Day" from "Animal House"; it's fun watching this flick thinking that his character may very well be the same as D-Day, only 40 years later); also Bob Newhart as a D.C. doorman who knows a thing or two about DC power politics (where was his character during Watergate?); but really belongs to a horde of extras mobilized by Elle to lead the fight on Capitol Hill. The moral of the story - never look down on the apparent savviness of your opponent who, though unsophisticated, is motivated by a cause they find noble. At least not in Hollywood.
The idea behind it is great: Elle Woods wants to save her dog's mother from an animal testing facility and end cruel animal research in the cosmetic industry for good using her new status in the legal profession. So it carries a great message. Sadly, the movie isn't much of a comedy at all. It isn't even all that entertaining. I probably wouldn't want to see it more than once, especially because Elle's constant "preppy blonde" antics are really starting to get annoying. Sure, the movies are cute, but let's face it: they're entirely unrealistic. No such person as Elle Woods could ever make it as a lawyer, let alone make it very far in the real world. Sally Field and Bob Newhart aren't in this as much as you may be led to believe, either. It focuses on Bruiser, the dog. Somehow, a serious subject like animal rights gets Elle's comments on shoes, clothes, make-up, etc., thrown in every few minutes to really grate on your nerves and wonder how someone so superficial could also be so good, caring, and deep. There you go, deep: Not the best word to use for this film. More like "fluffy." It's definite fluff. Like her quote: "In this case, the price of beauty is too high....I can't believe I said that!" Ugh. Still, if this is the only way to get across to people the problems with animal testing, it'll do. One woman Elle runs into says, "I don't think about it, that does the trick!" when asked to consider the horrible ways some animals get treated and abused. This shows the ignorance that so many people have that needs to change. A serious lesson in a movie that involves a Chihuahua falling in love with a Rottweiler. For corns' sake. So while Elle's political views are right-on, the movie itself isn't exactly the greatest. Still, it's worth a see.

I happen to adore Topher Grace, so I am inclined to be a little kinder to his character than I would be if he was played by, say, Joshua Jackson. Unfortunately, the screenplay doesn't share a fan's appreciation for a particular actor, and the movie doesn't capitalize on his strengths. Although nice to look at and at times appealing, he is a lot funnier and more charming on "That 70s Show," which I can see for free. Josh Duhumel steals the show out from under him, as a sincere but self absorbed A list actor who rehabs his image by dating a small town girl. I can't say I'm crazy about Kate Bosworth generally, but she does a competant job with what is an uninteresting character. (I was frequently distracted by the fact that she had two different colored eyes-- is she the love child of David Bowie and Jane Seymour?) The movie makes some strange choices. Some of the best dialogue is spoken by a seen-it-all bartender, who is openly in love with Topher Grace's character. The actress is right for the role, but the character is all wrong to be someone overcome with unrequited love for Topher Grace's straight-laced character. The movie could just as well have saved money and given the dialogue to Ginnefer Goodwin, who plays an equally sassy friend of Topher's. Instead, she spends her few scenes as a third wheel and doesn't seem to serve any other purpose. There are a number of things about "Tad" that don't work. The ending isn't entirely satisfying because the triangle isn't compelling or realistic. The 3 leads don't have much chemistry so I'm not sure either scenario would have provided a payoff. Watching the movie is pleasant enough, but it is already fading from memory.
Win a Date would probably have starred Molly Winwald as Rosalee, Anthony Michael Hall as Pete and Matt Dillion as Tad Hamilton and directed by John Hughes if it was made in the 80's. I only say this because it really reminds me of the type of movie Hughes would've made in the 80's. It's nice though to have a movie like this now. It's well acted, has heart and you can never really predict whar kind of guy Tad is. Does he really have a thing for her or is he using her to heighten his career ? I wouldn't mind seeing Topher Grace in more movies. He has more charm and talent than fellow That 70's star Ashton Kutchner who gets more work.
If you watch the extras you'll notice that all Paris Hilton's scenes were deleted (or at least I didn't notice any that remained). I give the movie extra points for this!
The story is vaguely familiar. The sweet girl in a rural West Virginia town thinks Tad Hamilton the actor is the greatest person on earth, not realizing that someone close to her is deeply in love with her. When she wins a contest to go to Hollywood to date Tad, she is ecstatic. This story could have ended here, but Tad is taken with Rosalee Futch (Bosworth) and pursues her back to West Virginia. The guy who has been in love with her most of his life, Pete Monash (Topher Grace), does not believe he can compete with Tad, though he does try. While the ending has some predictability, it also has some surprises. One feature that crops up several times in this movie is a certain amount of cynicism and sarcasm. As one example, the scene near the end of the movie between Pete and Rosalee is nearly identical to an earlier Tad Hamilton film. Sometimes the cynicism is equivalent to a baseball bat to the head, and other times it is very subtle. You have to watch the movie a couple of times, and even then I may still have missed much of the cynicism. Another feature of this DVD are the extras. The gag reel is pretty good, but I also liked the deleted scenes as well. There are a lot more extras than what is listed in Amazon, but the deleted scenes and gag reel are the best. A couple are incredibly hilarious. I was told that Paris Hilton is the blond woman in a couple of scenes, but I do not know for sure because I am unfamiliar with her appearance. Good light entertainment with quite a bit of humor, and manages to keep from being overly maudlin. I like it enough that I'll watch it again.
