Description

"Weird Al" Yankovic, Kevin McCarthy (Innerspace), Michael Richards ("Seinfeld"), David Bowie (The Cable Guy), Victoria Jackson ("Saturday Night Live") and Fran Drescher ("The Nanny") star in this inspired comedy about an offbeat guy who turns a deadbeat TV station into a raging success! Broadcasting Weird Al's uniquely strange brand of humor, UHF's Channel 62 is a place you'll want to visit...with increasing frequency!George Newman (Weird Al) is a daydreamer whose hyperactive imagination keeps him from holding a steady job...until his uncle hires him as manager of Channel 62, a TV station that's losing money and viewers fast. But when George replaces the station's reruns with bizarre programs like "Wheel of Fish," "The Wonderful World Of Phlegm" and "Raul's Wild Kingdom" (where poodles fly from third-story windows), ratings begin to soar! But as the ratings rise, so does the wrath of TV mogul R.J. Fletcher (McCarthy), who wants to turn the station into a parking lot. Can George find the money he needs to stay on the air? Stay tuned! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Complainers? We don't need no stinkin' complainers!"
How can you resist a movie where they throw poodles out of windows, let kids drink from fire hoses, where Conan hacks people apart because some people turned a book in late? The movie does have its slow parts, but the spoofs and skits are absolutely hilarious. I won't tell you all of them because then you won't go and rent or buy this great movie. This movie is really good if you are a Weird Al fan, like REALLY off-the-wall humor, parodies, something that can make you laugh. Some people hate this movie, but I think it's because they're trying to see it as a movie. UHF is not really trying to be a movie, it's trying to be more of a collage of parodies. Anyway, see it for yourself. There's no telling how many stomach muscles you'll burst watching this hilarious film.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK?? What's the point?
~80's music and movies always scare me but this movie has a SMALL exception. This movie is about when George Newman, a teenager with no job, ("Weird Al" Yankovic) gets permission from his uncle Harvey (Stanley Brock) to run a television station with his friend Bob (David Bowe), the really weird janitor Stanley Spadowski (Michael Richards), the television reporter wannabe Pamela Finkelstein (Fran Drescher), and a laboratory scientist from another planet named Phllo (Anthony Geary) while trying to avoid another television company owner (Kevin McCarthy) from taking over his company U-62, and turning it in to a parking lot . This movie is what I like to call a "slapstick movie" which is a move with nothing but mere jokes and gags. Many of the zany programs on the station that George runs are called "Wheel of Fish" (A cross between "Lets Make a Deal" and "Wheel of Fortune"), Raul's Wild Kingdom", "Stanley Spadowski's Clubhouse", "Fun with Dirt", "Ghandi II" and "Strip Solitare". A lot of these things just don't make sense! This movie is rated PG-13 and has Language, Adult Content, and Rude Remarks. It's kind of weird but kind of funny in an odd kind of way. Raul's Wild Kingdom was hillarious when Raul (Cliff Stephens) shakes up an ant farm and says "OHHH! They're really mad now!" and when he throws a poodle out of a three-story window because he thinks he can teach it to fly. Ghandi II was also quite funny along with "Conan the Librarian" and "Spatula City". This movie is overall in my opinion, ALRIGHT but next time MGM/UA makes a movie, don't put Weird Al in it!~

5-0 out of 5 stars Cult Classic
If you are a fan of Weird Al's parodies, this is the DVD for you. I know some people don't get it (a.k.a: Roger Ebert and some other critics). Yeah, the plot is a tad weak, but the main focus of this project was to give Al an outlet into doing parodies of movies and TV. There are many priceless gags in the movie ("Raul's Wild Kingdom" and "Ghandi II" come to mind). There is also a fabulous performance by Michael Richards (a.k.a.: Kramer from "Seinfeld") as the station's janitor turned TV star. There are also appearances by Victoria Jackson (SNL) and Fran Drescher (The Nanny).
The audio commentary is fantastic. You get to hear about what inspired some of the scenes and also what was not included in the movie. You also get to find out why the DVD wasn't released until June 4, 2002! There are deleted scenes on the DVD in the bonus material including a fantastic one of Michael Richards ad-libbing an entire scene!

3-0 out of 5 stars weird al

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST of random humor!

5-0 out of 5 stars ho bra, lines so great. try watch?
I LOVE this movie...got introduced to it by some Hawaiian mates at Uni, and now I've seen it about a gzillion times...got my friends Down Under hooked on it, too...and my sister...anyone who watches it likes it. Don't own it yet, but it's on the 'to do' list I didn't surf before I watched it, and now-I'm learnin'! Anyone who has an appreciation for it should read all the reviews: you'll crack up and 'relive' the movie reading peoples' quotes. Also, I must say, it's not "we treat friends mo betta on the North Shore", it's "here on the north shore, we treat friends mo betta", then Turtle tosses his hair and drives off. However, Vince and Chandler are my favorites...awesome guys! Rick Kane is a weenie kook, and Chandler was SO right when he said, "you got a lot to learn, so why don't you just shut up and watch." also, there is a North Shore line for every occasion. Watch it. Love it...Learn it. use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Occy, Curren, Hamilton and the kid from Teenwolf...
...and that old guy from TRAPPER JOHN, M.D.

Ok, so this movie is from the Hot Tuna era of surfing when Billabong was lost in neon colors. So what? It's brilliant. Featuring some of the best surfers of the time, and the best surfers of our current time...with epic Pipeline surf. Get it just to have the chance to see Laird Hamilton decades before he became the big-gun town-master of Jaws Maui or TO' Tahiti.

Slightly cheesy lines...yes. Turtle...he's the man...the greatest...movie moved him so much he became a surf instructor. I'm so glad to finally have this movie on DVD. My tape version of it wore thin years ago.

It's simply a great movie that even non-surfers can appreciate. Even though I've surfed for over 20 years now, I still find this movie enjoyable despite it's "Gleaming the Cube" vibe....it's truly far better than that.

Also...when the heck are they gonna release Endless Summer 2 on DVD??? Every single Bruce Brown film ever made is on DVD but that one! What gives!?

Sorry for that...get this movie, get this movie, get this movie. You'll thoroughly enjoy it and get to capture a period of surfing not captured many other places.

this movie rocks!! "Eh haole, you stay J.O.J. or what?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Paddle Yo!
Ahhh, so many North Shore fans out there. I love it! I must say that myself and older brother have got to be the ultimate fans. Not to many people I'm sure can say they have taken surf lessons from John Philbin (Turtle). I don't say this to brag or boast, but that's how much this movie meant to a couple of guys from the West Coast of Florida. Like so many have said, North Shore touches your soul. It's hard to say what it is, but this movie is an absolute classic! No vulgarity, nudity, or violence. Just an all-around great "feel good movie." With of course, so many memorable quotes. No doubt my favorite movie of all time!

Anyways, we found out that Philbin is now teaching surf lessons in Southern California. After finding this out, we jumped at the chance to have him teach us. We packed our stuff and flew out from the east coast to Cali. What a great experience! I loved this movie as a kid, and to be paddling out in the Pacific Ocean with Turtle was an absolute thrill! Philbin's a very cool guy and an excellent surf instructor. If you have the means and are going to be in So. Cal, or live in Cali, and REALLY want to learn to surf, look up Philbin for surfing lessons. - Nice little plug for my boy John!

"Chandler teach me how to big wave surf not even" Turtle
"Here on the North Shore we treat friends mo better" Turtle
"Yeah, design thing...design me right out of the picture howle"
"He one bad ripper yeah. I hear he break his stick he shred so bad"
"Scrub it kook!"
And the list goes on. If you love the movie you can quote every line. The DVD rules. Kudos to the company for actually believing in this film, after all of these years, and including interviews with the original cast.
This film touched a nerve in a whole generation of surfers and wanna be surfers alike.
If you love it like I love it, send an email to skatervet@yahoo.com. I'll send you a pic of the tribute Chandler Surfboards North Shore Hawaii T-shirt like the one Rick Kane (Matt Adler) wore at the end of the movie. Maybe one can be yours.

5-0 out of 5 stars Watch the film closely
For all of you sharp eyed disney fans out there(like me) you may notice a short scene of 'Mickey and the Beanstalk'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful follow up to the first
Usualy sequals to movies like this can really lack and leave a lot desired but this follow up to the hit "Honey I shrunk the Kids" is actualy a lot of fun and a nice change on the size changing themes that were developed in the first.

This movie realized that we probably saw enough of the shrinking and being lost in the backyard idea and decided to do the opposite. A few new characters were introduced in this movie to make things work. The most important being Wanyes new son Adam who is a 2 year old toddler and will be the focus of this latest instalment with the wacky inventor and his family. Wayne now is part of a big company who wants to use his size alteration invention for their own uses. The only problem is he can't get the growth part to work correctly. On a surprise visit to the lab with his two sons to do some extra work, 2 year old Adam accidently gets caught under the rays of the growth ray only to wind up growing very slowly over a long period of time. Before they can blink he has grown to over 100 feet tall and terrorizing
downtown Las Vegas. To make matters worse an evil partner in the company is trying to take control of things and wants the kid destroyed.

Its a fun story that really has a lot of creative moments like His other son and the babysitter getting captured by the giant and stuck in his shirt pocked for most of the movie. They make it look really realistic with the giant baby towering over some famous Las Vegas casinos and the crowd reacting pretty realisticly. Kinda like one of those silly Godzilla movies but still with a Disney charm to it. It has a great story and a good climax and everything seems to end up happily ever after. Its defintely a movie that all ages would enjoy, some may not like it more then the first but this one relies more on fewer characters and a focus of one huge character compared to a lot of small characters. So its a fair tradeoff I feel and worked well.

Unfortunatly though the movie has a few problems. One was that they totaly write out the daughter sending her to college, the neighbors too are not mentioned and they don't really show a lot in the way of the kid growing . He sorta just is one size one moment and bigger another. They could have done a little more with such things but those are minor problems.

Bottom line. If you are looking for a fun, carefree and family safe movie. This is the one for you. If you liked the first or any of the "Honey I..." movies this is a must get for the colection. You won't be disapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Flick!
Quality special effects, good family fun, and Keri Russell in a bikini - what's not to like about this movie? Check it out...

3-0 out of 5 stars OK sequel, still fun, but not as great as the first movie
Honey, I Blew Up The Kid (1992) was a sequel to the the 1989 hit "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids". As always with most sequels, they are never as great as the original film. However, there are still some funny moments in this one, and I think its still an OK film to watch for family viewing. Rick Moranis and Marcia Strassman return as Wayne and Diane Szalinski, reprising their characters from the first movie. Seeing their 2 and a half year old son get up to 112 feet (after being zapped by one of Wayne's inventions), the Szalinskis try to get things resolved fast, but of course, problems ensue during the course of the film. Veteran actor Lloyd Bridges also co-stars in this movie, along with a young Keri Russell, who would later be known as Felicity Porter on the TV series, Felicity (1998-2002). ... Read more

"I love that everyone is really an actress, is really a singer," confesses the ever hopeful Susan Dey, a bartender turned singing strip-o-gram still waiting for her big break. So, apparently, does director Robert Dornhelm, an Austrian who brings a fresh eye and an easygoing sympathy to a familiar story. Dey's new roommate, pizza delivery guy/budding songwriter Tom Hulce, is hopelessly in love with her while she falls madly into bed with her delightfully deluded duplex neighbor Michael Bowen, an Austrian bodybuilder ("body sculptor," he's quick to correct) waiting to become the next Schwarzenegger. The modesty of this 1986 American indie is infectious: they may never get their break, but the little family they make will provide the support they need along the way. Cheech Marin costars as Bowen's training-gym boss, and that's Cassandra ("Elvira") Peterson as the gym receptionist. --Sean Axmaker ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun movie filled with quirky characters.
Echo Park is an extremely funny movie, filled with some classic humor presented by a trio of truly quirky characters. Perhaps Susan Dey's best movie of all time! The character that is an Arnold Schwarzenegger wannabe is terrificly funny! This film is more timely now than ever!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly offbeat, interesting, good lines, very funny.
I've only seen this thing once, but loved it. I cannot believe that a movie this good isn't released on video.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Like Echo Park - the neighborhood
The movie itself isn't bad, but what I like best is the locale. Echo Park is a neighborhood that, while it might not be the safest place, has a lot of character. I also enjoyed watching a younger Tom Hulce work with an offbeat script. The ending is too abrupt and the movie gets rather bizarre at times, but at least it is unique. And it is more unique in a good, rather than bad sense. ... Read more
