If you love gangster comedies, then you'll love Friday, also recommended are Don't Be a Menace and Friday After Next.
"It ain't dem niccas that act hard...." "Oh SHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!" Man this movie is hands down the greatest comedy I have ever seen. Even when it turns serious and they are about to get smoked it is still funny. And when Craig was finna get beat up by Deebo, the classic line that makes me laugh everytime comes up "yeah put that gun down Craig and get knocked out like ya father used to!" My other favorite part is when Craig is high and he's talking to Debbie on the couch, and he turns and sees little puppie dogs staring at him and he goes "What the FHFG! man i'm trippin" Another part when it's getting dark and Smokey and craig are trying to come up with a plan and Smokey says: THis movie is funny from beginning (Jehovah's Witnesses and No Milk) to end ("I don't wanna die...Hey craig I love you man") and is very memorable. The performances were excellent, the cast was excellent. Even the concept of letting the plot come to them as they sit on the porch all day and do nothing is excellent. The music and soundtrack was also excellent. The movie is excellent. A Must have.

Joy finally admits to Leland that she wants to get married and it's a huge weight lifted off her shoulders. Now he is feeling the pressure to get her an engagement ring. Leland "accidentally" gets Joy an engagement ring, and when lets her know it was a mistake she breaks up with him. Stephanie loses weight and suddenly she is getting attention from men and loves it. Nicole is dating a doctor who loves to be served and taken care of (by Kadeem Hardison), but when her job performance suffers she has to make a choice. The movie is could be depressing for some, but for me I laughed a lot. There is a stigma to turning 30, and I happen to enjoy being in my 30's. The movie is about reflection, about taking chances, and about being honest to yourself about what you truly want in life. I enjoyed the movie so much I watched it twice before I returned it, and I plan to purchase my own copy. This is a good film. There is a hilarious scene that involves a 6th toe on the foot of one of the characters. Janet Hubert (Aunt Viv #1 from the Fresh Prince of Bell Air) plays Joys Mom in the movie. Music artist Monifah makes a quick appearance. Blink and you will miss her, it's that quick. There is another scene that Joy shares with her Mom discussing her just living with her boyfriend. Joy is trying to justify it, but some really great lines come out we all may have heard over and over. "That's your problem you're afraid you are going to scare him off. You know it's what you want (marriage) I can see it in your eyes." "For a man sex outside of marriage is like finding money. If no one claims it you will be spending it until it's all gone." "Why buy something you can get for free." The DVD has no significant extras. You get a filmography of the actors in the movie. It would have been nice to get some film commentary from the director and the actors in the movie. The movie stars Ericka Alexander (Living Single, Cosby show), Melissa De Sousa (The Best Man, Miss Congeniality), Tracy Morgan (The Tracy Morgan Show, SNL, Head of State), Paula Jai Parker (Proud Family, Friday, My Baby Daddy, Phone Booth), Allen Payne (Blue Hill Avenue, Cosby Show, Jasons Lyric, Vampire in Brooklyn, New Jack City), TE Russel (City of Angels), Kadeem Hardison (A Different World, Vampire in Brooklyn, White Men Can't Jump, Biker Boyz)
The movie covers the span of one year. It begins with a birthday celebration and ends with one. You get an inside view of what women want in a relationship and also what men want. It is hilarious as the characters portray the most shallow to something of substance. Sometimes all that we think we want in a person (outer trappings like money, career, good looks)...does not enhance the inner person (inner qualities like politeness, caring, considerate, loving, giving and unselfishness). Paula's character deals with being a great person inside (and a great cook), but overlooked by most men because she is overweight. She has an extreme make over which takes her on an enlightening journey to get the man of her dreams. Tracy's character seems to be a non-committal jerk, trying to break into the comedy business and bumming money from women...but later he reveals why a broke brother does what he does (a self-esteem kinda thing...issues). Erika's character lives with her boyfriend of four years. She wants to get married, but he does not. He goes to buy her a bracelet and is accidently given another customer's ring purchase. So he does not have the heart to tell his girlfriend that their engagement was a mistake, fake, crazy mix-up...this was deep. Allen's character quits a good job to follow his dream of being a model. He is also a womanizer that has left a trail of loved them & left them. He is forced to see the damage that his one night stands causes to women with good intentions. Melissa's character discovers that one must be careful what they pray for because you just might get it...and it might not be a pretty picture. In the course of one year each character grows older, but will they grow wiser and more mature? I enjoyed this one and highly recommend it. Paula & Tracy really came out of the box with their performances and I look forward to more from them in the future.

Morgan Freeman is the recovering alcoholic, former military attorney, who decides to help her out and keep off the juice.
The plot has fewer holes than most thrillers, although most viewers will see the "twist" a mile away. And that a law firm would jettison one of its promising stars because her husband was arrested is preposterous. Wouldn't they help in the defense? Still, given the holes in most thrillers these days, these lapses are minor. The acting is solid, with Judd creating a gutsy, smart woman who is capable of both unfaltering love and fury. Morgan Freeman does a fine job with his thin material as a once-alcoholic lawyer who is "a thorn in the military's side." James Caveziel, as Claire's husband, is less complex; his pleading got on my nerves by the end. Supporting roles by Amanda Peet (Claire's floozy sister) and Adam Smith (a young military lawyer) are adequate, though not highly memorable. The strength of this film is in the pacing and the seamless way in which it unfolds. The issues it raises about the United States's involvement in El Salvador provide an interesting, though not fully developed, frame. Highly enjoyable, though not perfect, this film is a good way to spend two hours with a bowl of popcorn at hand.

2ND TALE; A BOY IS BEING TERRORIZED BY A MONSTER AT HIS DOOR. HE TELLS A TEACHER THAT HE'S ALWAYS IN BRUISES BECAUSE OF THE MONSTER, BUT THE TEACHER DOESN'T BELIEVE HIM UNTIL HE COMES TO HIS HOUSE. NOW THIS IS SOMETHING DIFFERENT. THIS TALE WAS THE LEAST OF THE WHOLE MOVIE, BUT IT'S NOT BAD. IT'S JUST NOT AS GOOD AS THE OTHER 3. 3RD TALE; A WHITE MAN WHO'S RUNNING FOR MAYOR LIVES IN A FORMER SLAVE HOUSE THAT HAS DOLLS IN IT THAT ARE ALIVE. THIS IS GOOD, AND IT WAS PURE GENIUS HOW THE DOLLS CAME TO LIFE AND JUST SCARED THE LIVING SH.. OUT OF HIM. GREAT TALE. 4TH TALE; A THUG IS SENTENCED TO BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION. THIS IS THE BEST TALE THAT THIS MOVIE HAS TO OFFER. IT SHOWS WHAT OFTEN HAPPENS TO THUGS. HE KEEPS SAYING HE DON'T GIVE A F... BUT THEN WE HE BLOWS HIS CHANCE AT REDEMPTION, HE WAKES UP AND GETS KILLED. GREAT MOVIE. THIS BEATS THE ''TALES FROM THE CRYPT'' MOVIES. THEY SHOULD MAKE MORE HORROR MOVIES LIKE THIS. THIS WAS VERY THRILLING AND ALL THE TALES HAD A LOGICAL PLOT TO THEM. DON'T MISS OUT ON THIS ONE!
This movie is about three gangsters who go to a funeral home owned by Mr. Simms(Clarence Williams 3). They are trying to get some drugs that belonged to their dead friend. Mr.Simms sidetracks them by telling them these following 4 stories: 1. A black man was murdered by three crooked white cops. A black cop that witnessed this murder is being haunted by the dead man telling him to bring the cops to his grave. This man comes back to life as a monster to take revenge on these cops. 2.A little boy is being attacked by a monster that comes to his room every night. This monster is actually his stepfather. 3.A white politician is taking over a house that used to belong to a white master who murdered his black slaves. A voodoo woman transformed these dead souls into little dolls. These dolls are alive in the house and the politician is being attacked by them. 4. This story was the most powerful. After a black man slayed so many black people he was taken to a temple on a hill. First he was put on this machine where he saw clips of black people being killed by either white or black people. Then he was put in solitary confinement where he saw all the people he killed. Then he wakes up and he gets shot. This was linked to three gangsters we beginned with. The ending really freaked me out because you will find out who Mr.Simms really was and why these 3 gangsters ended up in this funeral home besides trying to get drugs. Not only was this movie scary but a little humor was in it that made me chuckle. If you SEE the movie besides reading my review you will be scared!
A must have in your DVD collection!!!
Any movie that ends with Link from the Mod Squad morphing into Satan Himself and hissing the line, "Welcome to hell....Mothertruckers!" scores 5 stars alone just for that. (Obviously he used a different word than my substitute to get this past the censors.) A++++!!! ... Read more | |

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" never really gives you the reason why Lymon (played by the talented actor Larenz Tate) was so very important in the history of R&B/rock and roll. Ignoring the fact that he was the first teenaged idol of rock and roll (like the little Michael Jackson of his era) and was an influence on other groups that would come after his, in this film Frankie was overwhelmingly portrayed as nothing more than some '50s rock music has-been who was a bigamist and a drug addict. On top of that, the three actresses who played his wives (Halle Berry, Lela Rochon, Vivica A. Fox) got more screen time than Larenz Tate did, and was billed over him. Excuse me, but wasn't this film supposed to be Frankie's story? I was not interested in seeing a movie about his wives.

THE STORY: Stu Shephard (Colin Farrell) is a Manhattan publicist guilty of a few things: being a somewhat dishonest businessman and lustfully fawning after a young actress, Pamela (Katie Holmes) despite being married. Little does he know that someone's been watching him lust after Pam. When Stu enters his Manhattan phone booth to talk to Pam (as has been his ritual) he's taken hostage by a psychotic sniper (Kiefer Sutherland) who's determined to make "bad men" repent for their unrighteous actions. Things go from bad to worse for Stu when he's accused of shooting a street pimp from the booth and the swat team arrives to take him into custody. Unfortunately for him, the sniper won't let him leave the booth till he confesses his sins. THE COOL THINGS: It amazes me that the entire movie takes place on a street corner in a phone booth - all 80 minutes of this movie. It amazes me further that the movie manages to remain engaging and enthralling. The suspense maintained by the movie is very reminiscent of Sutherland's other current big profile work, namely 24. The sniper character voiced by Sutherland is easily the highlight of the movie. The sniper is obviously a psychotic stalker and killer. However, he is also at the same time an avenging angel with an odd sense of justice. BEST SCENES: Well, quite honestly, the whole movie is basically one big scene at the phone booth. At a brisk 80 minutes the movie moves along at a brisk pace and is quite honestly one big thrill ride. THE DVD FEATURES: Not much to write home about here. For the DVD you get the now standard director's commentary (great listen) plus the theatrical trailer for the movie. THE VERDICT: At a short 80 minutes "Phone Booth" is perfect viewing - a quick but intense thrill ride. Think of it like a quick high, it doesn't last very long but is worth every minute. Highly Recommended
I finally watched it with the rationale that it is Colin Farrell in the booth, and therefore would not be another "My Dinner with Andre" kind of movie. While I've seen better movies, this one kept my attention, and I would never consider it to be 81 minutes of my life irretrievably lost. Colin Farrell is brilliant as Stu Shepard, but the rest of the cast fails to register on the "Wow" scale. Katie Holmes is cute, but horribly miscast, and Forest Whitaker won't be putting this one down as one of his better performances. Nobody else even registers, except of course the caller, who has a suitably creepy voice. The concept is intriguing, as a mystery caller with a wealth of technology and information seeks to right the wrongs of the world, one slime-ball at a time. Worse offenders must have crossed his path, but for some strange reason, he decides to target Shepard for the "crimes" of fantasizing and nearly cheating on his wife, for faking his success, and for not being nice to people in general. After Shepard manages to tip off the police, and they finally realize that something's not right with the scenario, the movie wraps up in an untidy hurry. The major let down for me was the prominent billing for Keifer Sutherland, even with his face in the cover shot, so you definitely knew something was wrong by the time you got to the end, said end being quite unsatisfying. Plot holes abound, but if you can get past them, you will enjoy Farrell's performance. Amanda Richards 7/12/04
Directed by Joel Schumacher (8MM, Falling Down, Tigerland) made a Clever, Suspenseful, Taut Dark Comedy Thriller. Farrell gives a Dynamic Performance and a Chilling Voice Work by Sutherland. This film was only shot in 12 Days in December, 2000 and it was release in April, 2003. Which it was probably, the best way to shot the film to keep the mood realistic. DVD has an sharp anamorphic Widescreen (2.35:1) transfer (also in Pan & Scan) and an strong-Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. DVD has an fine commentary track by the director and the original theatrical trailer. Do not miss this unique psychological thriller. Terrific Cinematography by Matthew Libatique (Abandon, Gothika, Requiem for a Dream). Written by Larry Cohen (It's Alive Trilogy, Guilty as Sin, Q-The Winged Serpent). Panavision. Grade:A-. ... Cundieff is certainly sincere in his role, but his character was uneven. His turns at trying to be hip and using slang fell flat. But contrasted with the horrible stereotypical performances of Parker and Torrey, I'd say that Cundieff was a welcome respite. On the whole this movie is worth renting if you just want something very light hearted and silly. ... Read more | |
