1-0 out of 5 stars Whoa, Dad!!!
A good JD flick. Rich kid John Ashley is a high school bully with his gang of goons extorting money from local teens for all kinds of things. When he is involved in the death of a fellow student in a car race, things really heat up. Look for Gary Vinson ("Christy" from "McHale's Navy") as one of the teens. Now the BAD NEWS: If you're thinking of buying this Alpha DVD, think again. For a movie made in 1960, this has got to be one of the worst transfers to DVD I have seen. Well, the transfer might be O.K. but the source material leaves much to be desired. I had an old VHS of "High School Caesar" from Rhino Video and it ran rings around this abomination. Scratchy print, soft focus, but worst of all....the audio!! Very woolly and too basey! Sometimes you can't even understand what they are saying. I can live with Alpha's shortcomings in the DVD quality department most of the time, given the age and rarity of some of their titles.... but this is unwatchable!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Et tu, "High School Caesar"
If you liked "High School Confidential," if you sat through "Teenage Strangler," if you couldn't get enough of "Girl's Town," daddy-o you'll dig "High School Caesar." In this lawless tale of teenage delinquency, Mat Stephens (John Ashley) leads a ring of beatnik greaser thugs down a dragstrip destined for disaster. Teenage rebellion fostered by the conspicuous absence of parental supervision leads to hijinks on the road, at the malt shop and in the locker room. Stephens, a spoiled rich kid, rigs a high school election and, with his Jerry Lewis-esque sidekick Cricket, holds the hallways hostage. After a tragic drag race, Stephens confronts his true nature in a "far-out" denouement that will leave you reeling with laughter. This movie is above and beyond the typical teenage exploitation because it not only maintains a wonderfully awful B-movie story, but also entertains. Look for Ashley in other great camp fare such as "Beach Party" and "Bikini Beach." A definite must for B-movie, drive-in fans.

2-0 out of 5 stars Small town mid-America youth meet young gang boss wannabe.
A low-budget movie shot on location with local teens as cast and extras. This is a time capsule of the early 60s with a Hollywood idea of small town mid-America life-style. It has become a staple of high school reunions in our area (and yes, some friends have billing, and others of us appear in scenes) What fun, to see our hometown as it once was, and ourselves at that time. That is the greatest appeal for most of us, although there is some acting, a couple of chase scenes, and an exciting car crash (using a vintage auto owned by a local young man.) I'm glad "High School Caesar" came to my town. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars what tha????
This has got to be, hands down, one of the worst films I have ever seen. The story of a vigilante who has erected his own electric chair to deal with "soft on crime" policies after his family is slaughtered by an early parolee. Terribly acted, terribly shot. This movie is straight up crap. I started watching it out of camp value, issac hayes, lauren hutton, heather graham...I bet all parties involved wish this poo-bomb would crawl back to the depths of hell from which it was spawned. I saw that used copies were being sold as low as 43cents...this is way too much. You should be paid to take this off of someone. I don't know what kind of compensation would be worth the cost on your humanity. Please, for your own sake! Heinous!!! You have been warned.

3-0 out of 5 stars I saw it SOLELY for Heather Graham
While this film is definitely in the "WEIRD" category, I can't call it a bad film. It is definitely low-budget, and one that 98% of the population has never heard of.

The camerawork in this film is awesome; lots of dutch angles, high/low angles, etc. which work well for the story.

The story itself is interesting, a self-appointed vigilante who runs his own death row after hours in a meat plant.

If it hadn't had Heather in it, I probably would've never seen it. ... Read more

Hamburger Hill
Because it was released less than a year after Oliver Stone's Platoon and within months of Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, this exceptionally well-made film about one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War was largely overshadowed and overlooked. It's a pity, because in some respects this is the best of the Vietnam films of the late 1980s, at least in terms of the everyday authenticity it depicts. Stripped clean of dramatically extraneous narrative, the movie opts instead for a straightforward approach to its day-by-day account of one of the war's costliest victories--a deadly siege on Hill 937 in the Ashau Valley, where soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division engaged the enemy over the course of eleven brutal assaults between May 10th and 20th, 1969. The film specifically follows the 3rd Squad, 1st Platoon, a mixture of "new guys" and battle-weary "short-timers" who fought against terrifying odds and suffered a 70% casualty rate. From first scene to last, Hamburger Hill traces the rise and fall of their battle experience, from the horror of firefights to the camaraderie of men who've faced death and survived. Racial tensions flare and subside, trusts are established, and courage emerges from unexpected places. Through it all, writer Jim Carabatsos and director John Irvin maintain a purity of focus that pays tribute to the soldier's life without promoting false patriotism or gung-ho theatrics. In addition, the film features a cast full of talented and well-known actors in the early stages of their careers, including Dylan McDermott (from the TV series The Practice) and Don Cheadle, before gaining fame in Devil in a Blue Dress and Boogie Nights. --Jeff Shannon

The Eagle Has Landed
This 1976 adventure story set in World War II concerns a Nazi plot to kidnap Churchill from his retreat--or murder him if need be. The large, great cast and a director, John Sturges, who's been down this road of ensemble action before (The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape) make this project exciting if not as memorable as Sturges's more famous works. The weak ending doesn't help. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I watched this movie when it first aired and loved it so much that I bought the video. I have since watched it numerous times.

Brandy does not have near the voice to do a Rogers and Hammerstein. I still don't understand why she was cast as Cinderella. I hope she will not attempt another musical in the future. Whitney was Whitney. She succeeded in turning the fairy godmother into her image.

Fortunately, the rest of the cast more than make up for them. Overall, the acting was good. The singing (beside Brandy) was excellent. Whoopi Goldberg and Victor Garber were great as Queen and King. Whoopi was hilarious, but I wish she didn't have to sing. I agree with the other reviewers that Bernadette Peters stole the show as the wicked stepmother. Her singing and acting were superb. Jason Alexander was OK as the Prince's Valet, but why did he need that accent??? The two stepsisters were funny.

The real fairy tale is newcomer Paolo Montalban. He was exceptional in his TV debut and what a fantastic voice. I hope to hear him sing again. His prince was perfectly charming, and he could dance too.

Lastly, the mutlicultural casting is ingenious. All the actors and actresses were cast by their singing (except Brandy) and acting (except Whitney) ability. Disney didn't make this an all-white or all-black Cinderella so children of all races can enjoy it. For the people who think that this is not realistic, remember THIS IS A FAIRY TALE. If mice can change into horses and pumpkins into coaches that fly then why can't a white king and a black queen have an asian son. We don't need an scientific explanation to everything. Just enjoy the movie. ~

4-0 out of 5 stars Great film!!
This version took a big risk and, eventhough its tough to see, it was a woderful film. True, Brandy doesn't have the best voice for R&H but her Cinderella was a stronger character and more believable, instead of the usual weak Cinderella. Having great B'dway stars like Bernadette Peters, Jason Alexander, Whoopi Goldberg, Victor Garber, Paolo Montalban and the two step sister brought life, woderful acting, and wonderful singing to the film. Even though Whitney Houston wasn't the best choice for the Fairy Godmother she produced the movie and you have to admit she can sing. The sets, costumes, and special effects were amazing and brought out the story book mood, something the other versions never did and R&H's score was beautifully brought back to its full glory that just wasn't in the 1965 production. Though the film has a few flaws it's a great film!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
My 2-year-old daughter and I have so much fun singing along with this video. She even asks me to dance during the ballroom scenes. It is a fabulous production.

4-0 out of 5 stars great voices but ok acting
I've seen the version with Leslie Anne Warren and thought that anyone could sing and be Cinderella better than her, and with Disney's 1997 version someone did. Brandy brings to this role some much needed sophistication and class that, unfortunately, Leslie Anne did not. The movie is filled with great music and overall ok acting, but still can't anyone make a musical that is not corny or cheesy? Did the great musical end with Grease? Paolo was absolutely fabulous and a great find. His voice resounded with greatness. It's too bad that a musical can have such great singing talent, but not much in the acting department. Still, it makes for great background noise while reading or studying.

5-0 out of 5 stars multi-ethnic cast shines!
Having grown up with the magic of Lesley Anne Warren as Cinderella, I wasn't sure the Rogers and Hammerstein musical could be topped, but the whole family was impressed with this one. Brandy does a wonderful job as Cinderella: demur, wistful, and understated, and her singing is beautiful (and I wasn't a fan before). The set and costumes and the supporting cast are all excellent! All of the actors manage to convey a sense of their characters' humanity (with the possible exception of Jason Alexander). The "evil" stepsisters are a hoot, Bernadette Peters is inspired, the royal parents capture every parent's concern for their offspring, and Paolo Montalban as the prince is someone anyone could fall in love with.... In short, this updated, multicultural Cinderella is worth putting in your DVD library. ... Read more

Description

A masked, naked, clay-covered band of jungle primitives are disturbed in the middle of a human sacrifice by the sudden intrusion of a croquet ball. Led by their high priestess, they trek through the forest in search of its origins and arrive at an immense, deserted manor house. They occupy the mansion, which begins to have a civilizing effect on the savages; individual personalities emerge, and with them, pasts, futures, family connections, ambitions, and other trappings of society. Over the course of a weekend get-together, the savages soon become grand socialites, in fine clothes, who give elaborate dinner parties, where the talk is of world politics, art, and the fascinations of anthropology. But then their civilization begins to fall apart; the savages' manners and morals deteriorate and they even lose the habit of speech. By Monday dawn they have shed their clothes and we last see them retreating into the forest and their Stone Age lives.

The first American film from Merchant Ivory Productions is also their most uncommon and most unexpected, especially for audiences only familiar with their Indian films or their period films set in Europe or America. A fascinating meditation on the rise and fall of civilizations, with a witty screenplay by George Swift Trow and Michael O'Donoghue, Savages is filmed in an improvisatory, experimental style and merges a series of tragic—comic tableaux with pseudo-scholarly documentary narration and title cards. The result is a dark, biting satire that will turn viewer expectations upside-down.

2-0 out of 5 stars Actors must have needed a paycheck! Ugh!!
Weird is hardly adequate for this thing. I tried to watch this one, but fast forwarded through most of it. Obviously not my taste to keep this dumb movie in my library, so I didn't. Truly the actors must have needed the work. Can't you imagine their giggling through this thing as they marched ...through the muddy forest to their next adventure! They followed the bouncing/rolling wooden ball to discover a new era, including a chest of old clothes and how to wear them. That was somewhat amusing, even though briefly. If you like odd, old scripts, you might like this thing. But alas! The characters head back to their life in the jungle. Get real!

We like Sam Waterston in just about any role he's chosen. His part in this one is OK, but it's almost embarrassing to see him in this kind of movie. It's just not worthy of him. This movie is from 1972 when he was only 32-years old and had a 2-year old to feed. He must have needed to pay the rent too!

I really don't like to be negative regarding a review, but if you're going to spend your money to get it, and your time to see it, you should be aware that it's really strange! (Don't want this video on my Sam Waterston library shelf. He's so excellent in his later roles. Try one of those.) Hope this helps you out.

3-0 out of 5 stars JUNGLE DUMS..........
THE MUD People are about to perform the usual human sacrifice, when out of nowhere - lo! A red ball [croquet I recall] comes whizzing out of nowhere and lands in their midst! Fascinated, they abandon the victim and trace the trajectory back to its origin - a decaying, vast, ancient mansion 'in the jungle'. THEN AN astute member finds a trunk filled with rather lovely period costumes [circa 1920 ish], and as they start donning the robes - they transform the action into something along the lines of Gatsby revisited ........ Hmmmm a quaint concept - and it does hold attention!

ODD little movie from the early 70ties with Sam Waterston, Salome Jens, Kathleen Widdoes, even Ultra Violet. [An Early
James Ivory for your collection]

Superb Costumes and Art direction - if you're in a quirky "Brazil type" mood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Savages
This movie was way ahead of its time. A terrific satire on the sophistication of our civilization. A group of savages are able to emulate 20th century life until tragedy strikes and forces them back to the existence of their comfort zone. "The Gods Must Be Crazy" is a me-too copy of this classic film. Not for the "light-hearted".

3-0 out of 5 stars Not that bad...
Ok, so I watched this movie today and it was actually better than I expected. Longer too ~2hr 45mins which is something to rival Star Wars.

I also managed to see the original movie again a couple of weeks ago (after first seeing it years and years ago). What was most noticable to me were the flashbacks to the past which were so different to what was in the original movie. Ok, I don't mean not using any of the original actors like Heather Locklear or Drew Barrymore (like they would do this kind of movie now anyway) but the way the parents died, for example, was completely different to the way it was portrayed in this movie.

It was also sad how John Rainbird had developed his own personal little army which would eventually lead to a gigantic showdown btwn Charlie and the young "gifted" boys. I did however like the young guy who was helping Charlie through the majority of the movie. It's always nice to have someone you can trust who won't just run away when they learn the truth about you - as frightening as that can be. Too bad things didn't go as he or Charlie expected in the end.

I think the girl who played Charlie did a pretty good job but it's a bit of a shame that they didn't use the bits from the first movie as the flashback sequences. However, seeing they inserted some extra footage in the flashback scenes that weren't in the original movie it's understandable that they would need to use other actors to play those roles. Of course the special effects - including sound - were much better in this movie. Not surprising since the first movie was done 18 years ago.

See it on video if you're curious to see how Charlie turns out.

4-0 out of 5 stars You guys need to lighten up
After browsing through a few of my fellow critics reviews I need to say this, lighten up. This movie is not that bad considering that it is a sci-fi channel miniseries style film. For a movie that does not need to rely on saying things like (beep) or having tones of (sexual intercourse) that most sequels rely on they really pulled off a treat to the eyes.

I think the problem that most of my fellow critics had was the fact that they read the book, did not like the first film because it did not faithfully adapt to the book. Who cares? The first film was fine and the second one lived up to it's predecessor.

Malcom McDowl played a fine Rainbird as he did an excellent job just like George C. Scott did. The new Charlie (what you expected Drew Barrymore to reprise her role) does a good job as the now grown up Charlie trying to survive as she is still being hunted. Rainbird new plan of more experimented kids provides a deadly advisary for her and overall I would say this movie is worth seeing.

However like I said I am little more liberal with the way I see movies but I honestly think that if one was to give this half a chance they would enjoy it. It is entertaining to watch to those who are willing to give it a chance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should not be compared to the original.
Many people are comparing this to the original and because of that are giving it bad reviews. This should not be. If you are looking for complete continuity of the original, then your looking in the wrong place.

Instead, view this a a completely seperate movie. It's also important to realize that this was a mini series, not a regular movie, so it's long.

Yes, it differs in many aspects from the original, but if you can look past that, its a very good movie/mini series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but long...
I really think that the Sci-Fi channel did a really good job on this movie, especially when you compare it to the other movies that they've done. All and all it was really interesting but it's definately one of those movies that you can't get up and walk off for a second because then you don't know what is going on anymore. I watched the movie on cable and they made this 2 hour movie last for a whole 4 hours and honestly I think that was just plan out unnecessary!!! Not to ruin it for anyone but... the ending is really disappointing and kind of predictable especially if you've watched any kind of horror movie EVER!

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than I thought...
Okay, this movie was made by the Sci-Fi channel so I'm not going to be so hard on them for not having the best script/special effects/story. I'm just going to focus more on the entertainment factor.

Yes, I was a huge Firestarter fan. I was a bit disappointed in the changes from the past during the flashback pieces... but the main story was still there. But this is the biggest reason I did not give them five stars... diverting from the real story.

However, I did enjoy the entertainment value. The idea of more children with unique abilities was fun... I wish they had shown more of these children. A glimpse at Charlie's life as she was all grown up was interesting, as well as other characters from the Lot 6 experiment.

The only thing I did not like was the ending... but this is the story of Charlie so it should have been expected. I'll leave it at that so I don't blow the ending for anybody. But it somewhat disappointed me.

No, this wasn't as good as the original. Of course, Stephen King wrote it and didn't have a hand in this, so of course it is better. I wasn't expecting much and was prepared to turn it off it if didn't catch my attention well. But I was entertained and I watched it to the end. Overalll, I would say, "Job well done, Sci-Fi Channel."

Would I recommend it? Maybe... if your expectations are high (don't expect a Terminator 2 type of sequel) then I would suggest skipping out on this one. But if you are into a night (this is a long movie) of cheap entertainment, pick this up! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Faerie Tale Theatre Ever!
I would have to agree with the previous review that this is the best episode of Faerie Tale Theatre. In adapting faerie tales for film or television, the biggest difficulty seems to be in capturing that sense of awe and wonder that the original stories invoke. Without picture illustrations and a child's imagination to fill in the blanks, the original stories often appear static and lifeless on the screen. At worst, the sublime becomes downright ridiculous. Faerie Tale Theatre is a great and entertaining show, but rarely has it captured that sense of magic. This episode is one time that is has, and the results are truly something to behold. Eric Idle is the only "name" here, but the rest of the cast is equally perfect in their roles. Nicholas Meyer creates an entire other world, utilizing medieval tones in setting and costumes, as well as an eerie score of pipes from composer James Horner. The effect is mesmerizing, and if the use of rhyme as dialogue takes some getting used to, it only adds to the haunting impact in the end. This episode may be too disturbing for the youngest children, but all lovers of faerie tales owe it to themselves to see this. It doesn't have the budget of big-screen fantasies, but I rank this right up there with the NeverEnding Story and the Dark Crystal. If you love those films, then you understand what I mean about the sublime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and surreal...as fairy tales should be.
In the early to mid eighties, Shelly Duvall produced a cable show for the then flagship HBO network called Faerie Tale Theatre. The intent was to bring classic childhood stories to an audience of young and old alike through big name stars, directors, and hip, irreverent writing. Without this series, there would not have been a "Princess Bride". Although many of these were excellent examples of the best television could offer, the finest hour (for me) was director Nicholas Meyer's interpretation of Robert Browning's "Pied Piper of Hamelin". Both faithful to the original poem and liberal in its creative embellishments, Meyer perfectly captured the eerieness of the story. The show starred Eric Idle and he makes a perfect Piper. Tall, pale, with piercing eyes and a hawklike nose, Idle looke every bit the character: part mystic, part mercenary. And his final march out of Hamelin with the children is truly the stuff of innocent nightmares. Without sentimentality, without any concession to cuteness, this episode proved that within all great children's stories lurked something magical and sinister...Just like adulthood. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ludicrous fluff, but carried off with a certain panache
Notice how by the second sentence of the box description quoted above, we're already hearing about Bandai's lust for merch: "With a full line of action figures and model kits, apparel, Playstation 2 video games, and other related merchandise - Experience Gundam like never before on DVD home video!"

G Gundam premiered in 1994. It was the first "Gundam" show to abandon the main, serious "Universal Century" (UC) continuity that had linked all previous Gundam series and movies. While UC series like Gundam 0083, Zeta Gundam, and Char's Counterattack all take place in historical relation to one another, with recurring characters and reference to past events, G Gundam, like Gundam Wing after it, is off in its own little universe.

G Gundam was also a big fat commercial ploy by Bandai to goose Gundam model kit and paraphernalia sales, which had been slipping since the lukewarm reception of Victory Gundam (1993-94).

The result is something like Gundam meets Street Fighter by way of Dragonball Z. Dozens and dozens of over-the-top Gundams representing the different space "nations" come together in the Gundam Fight. These "mobile fighters" all have ludicrous traits that represent their nations. E.g., the "Neo-Canada" entrant is called "Grizzly Gundam" (Lumber Gundam in Japan), and is built like a ... well, a lumberjack, with a big old mecha chainsaw on its back. Seriously. If you think that's wild, you need to check out the Mummy Gundam and the (yes) Mermaid Gundam, which transforms into a fish. Mermaid is actually an elegant design, in a too-many-psychedelic-mushrooms sort of way.

Each pilot has a special finishing move with his Gundam, and in the best PlayStation style, yells out the move as he does it! "Shining Finger!!" The main characters are a bunch of top Gundam fighters who come together in a playing-card-motif kind of club called (yes!) The Shuffle Alliance.

All of this is obviously a long way from the semi-realistic, gritty military drama of the original, UC Gundam shows. For that reason a lot of older fans despise G Gundam. They figure, with some justice, that it gives potential fans the wrong impression of what the other, more serious Gundam shows are like. (Gundam Wing's popularity with preteens likewise misled lots of people to think Gundam is about pretty-faced misanthropic boys riding invincible uber-Gundams and giving incomprehensible speeches about war and peace. Actually, most of the good UC shows are about military men and women piloting all-too-mortal mobile suits, and they contain some genuinely moving scenes.)

Me, I wouldn't go out of my way to watch G Gundam, but I gotta admit it plays out on TV somewhat better than it sounds. The fight choreography is excellent, if liberally laced with drama/cheese. Several cool technological tricks are unveiled, like the skintight movement-sensitive suits that the pilots wear inside their cockpits to direct the machines. The final God Gundam piloted by hero Domon Kasshu (Burning Gundam in the US) is a gorgeous mecha. Schwarz Bruder's "Neo-German" Gundam Spiegel (aka Shadow Gundam?) is also sweet. The actors manage to invest the campy mecha fights with passion. Rain Mikamura is a babe.

In sum, while there are a lot of more nutritious Gundam series out there, G Gundam offers decent brain and eye candy for fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gundam fight begins.....
....and it gets of to a great start! The first episode of G Gundam is one of my most favorite. The first episode makes the whole DVD worth buying. The other episodes are great too. They do an excellent job of introducing the characters who will play a key role in the series. If you like good anime then pick this up TODAY!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Round 1
21 year old Domon Kasshu has to fight for his nation, Neo-Japan. His father and other son, Kyoji Kasshu has built a Gundam that is called the Dark Gundam. His bro, Kyoji goes to Earth in the Gundam. His mother was shot while she was protecting his son, Kyoji. Domon was tooken and has been told to fight for Neo-Japan for him to have his father back. His father is frozen since he has built the Dark Gundam. Domon has had a old child-hood friend named Rain Mikamura. She is 20 and she supports him in fights even if he doesn't need any. She is a doctor and well not exactly a Gundam Fighter. She fixes Shining Gundam whenever it needs repair. They meet Chibodee Crocket, George DeSand,Argo Gulski and Sai SaiCi.

5-0 out of 5 stars G Gundam
How should I start... Ok, There is a 21 year old man named Domon Kasshu. He has to become a Gundam Fighter for his nation, Neo-Japan. This is because his mother was shot and his brother, Kyoji has gone to earth with a Gundam called, The Dark Gundam. The nation froze Domon's father since he and Kyoji created the Dark Gundam. Now if Domon Kasshu wants to save his father he must win the Gundam Fight. He is also assisted by a 20 year old women named, Rain Mikamura. Her father, Dr. Mikamura has been very good friends with Dr. Kasshu. Rain Mikamura helps Domon when he is on Earth. She fixes the Gundam, Shining Gundam when it has to be repaired. She has a feeling for Domon but she won't tell him. Domon is known as the King Of Hearts. This is becuz his master, Master Asia, who has trained him to be a fighter. So Master Asia pasted down the crest. Well hope that helps you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best introduction, but still a good series
Let me just say I love G-Gundam. I think it's the freshest mecha series I've seen in awhile and a change from the norm of Gundam sagas. However, the first few episodes might leave a few viewers confused.

CHARACTERS
Domon Kashu: Neo-Japan's fighter and the "King of Hearts" (explained later on).
Rain Mikamura: Domon's assistant and medical expert.
Chibodee Crocket: Neo-America's fighter.
Sai Saichi: Neo-China's fighter.
George Dissan: Neo-France's fighter.

This story takes place in the year Future Century 60. In order to decide which nation will control outer space, a tournament is held every four years to decide which nation gains control of Earth. However, most of this won't come into much play until the second half of the series.

Episode 1 (B+): Domon and Rain go to Rome to fight Neroes Gundam and also save the life of a young girl.

Episode 2 (B): Domon is off to Neo-America to fight Gundam Maxter, but the government has other plans.

Episode 3 (B-): Domon must bring back the Dragon Gundam from a bunch of Chinese smugglers.

Episode 4 (B+): Domon helps a young girl gain the respect of Geroge Dissan by making Domon kidnap her in order to draw out the Rose Gundam.

The English dub has the names of some of the Gundams switched, but that doesn't come up in this first volume. Domon's voice sounds very realistic and actually does more justice to his character. The English dub of Rain is done perfectly and makes her personality seem less cutesy.

The menu for scene selection is cleverly setup as a map of the world, but it is a little hard to select from there. The only extra on this disc is an interview with the original director making comments on the episodes and why they were setup that way.

Overall, this first volume won't automatically draw fans into it, but it is worth watching as the series goes on. In other words, if you buy this volume, make sure you are willing to buy the entire series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars pieces of history
really interesting double feature. spanish earth: . not one car chase, no sex, blood, hard techno beats or guitar solos. one corpse actually, a war, some peasants and a bakery. a time capsual from another era. documentary, somewhat styleised but interesting for it. hard to give it marks out of 5, it is what it is. if you want an insight into the spanish civil war and an unglamerous perception of the time, and if you want a perspective on those who were involved in the making of the film and why, this is a cool piece. 400million is more dynamic but still a period piece and fascinating for it. i cant find a reason not to reccomend these. again, they are what they are. 5/5. go buy these pieces of history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
For 6 years, Mike Myers remained one of "Satturday Night Live's" most versatile cast members, with his assortment of quirky characters and a few memorable impressions of British celebrites. So anyone would be hardpressed to choose 16 of Mike's best sketches to fit one dvd. Fotunatel, it was an easy task for the people at Broadwat Video, who have put together just about every "SNL" anthology. They sketches span from his first season in 1989 to the 1994 - 95 season, the season in which Myers left during the second half.

All of Mike's classic characters are here. Wayne of "Wayne's World" is represented in 2 hilarius sketches, one in which he and Garth (Dana Carvey) are jamming with Aerosmith and another, more popular one in which they enjoy a "wet dream involving Madonna. I also enjoyed some characters who only appeared once or twice or the ones who appeared many times but never became as popular, like Lothar, Simon, Philip and Middle - Aged Man. His passion for Britian pops more than one in the "Hedley And Wyche" toothpaste commercial, "RAF Hospital", "Simon", "Theatre Stories" and his hilarious impressions of Mick Jagger and Ron Wood. Linda Richman and Dieter are also here. I'm glad that his most popular characters are presented in complete sketches. Carvey and Sandler had to have their most memorable characters (Operaman and The Church Lady) butchered to mere montages on their dvds.

The bonus sketches are okay. I especially enjoyed "Wayen's World" and "Update Ito", bu the others weren't as good. Still, this is an excellent compilation of one of the greatest comedians of our time. Since leaving "SNL", he hit it big as a movie star with "Austin Powers" and "Shrek", but he hasn't forotten the show that made him famous. He hosted in 1997, appeared at the 25th anniversary special and made a cameo in last season's Alec Baldwin episode.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very funny, but are these really the "best" sketches?
One of the difficulties of the "Best of" series is that someone else is deciding what's best. This is no easy task with a performer who was on SNL as long as Mike Myers. Distilling six years of performance to a mere 16 sketches (20 if you get the DVD version) inevitably leaves the serious fan unsatisfied. To be sure, this effort gives us Myers' principle characters, but they're not necessarily in their funniest sketches. The "Coffee Talk" on the tape is definitely not the funniest one he ever did, though it is the one with the biggest stars in guest roles. Likewise, there are funnier "Sprockets" and "Simon" sketches-but the ones included have serious star power. "Best" in this case seems more often than not to mean "the one where (insert famous person's name here) was on the show".

None of this to say that this isn't a funny compilation. It is. The Wayne's World sketches *are* probably the best efforts, and the others aren't dull by any means.

It just would be nice if Broadway Video did serious fans a favor and used the storage capacity of the DVD format to create performer anthologies. I would rather have *all* the sketches of a particular performer and be able to decide for myself which were the funniest. At the very least it would be nice to have the first of each major character's appearances. It would been even better to have some commentary by Mike Myers and maybe the writing staff on how the characters came into being. Now that the show has reached the mature age of 25, maybe Lorne Michaels will produce a more behind-the-scenes, documentarized compilation series in the future.

Until then, the "Best of" series is a good enough substitute. On balance, however, this may be one of the few video products that might be best bought on VHS instead of DVD. Other than the few additional sketches, many of which are drawn from Myers' return hosting of the show and not his stint as featured player, there are no special features on the DVD. The extra sketches ARE funny, and the Judge Ito Apology sketch marks the closest thing to an appearance of Austin Powers SNL has witnessed. But the question is whether these sketches alone warrant the extra price, or whether you can own the VHS but rent the DVD for one-time viewing.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Wayne Campbell Would Say, "Excellent"
While not as versatile as Dana Carvey or Phil Hartman, Mike Myers had his own comedic charm that made him one of "Saturday Night Live's" most popular castmembers in the early 1990s'. Unlike Carvey and Hartman, Myers was a sort of character actor, relying on his own comic creations rather than impressions. Many of those characters have gone to become some of the best - known in "SNL" history and revived it as a sketch - comedy show.

Even if you don't consider this his absolute best, I find it pretty hard for anyone not to enjoy what's on here. Whether you like Wayne from "Wayne's World" or Dieter, host of the German television show "Sprockets", eveything here will make you laugh. Also, a wealth of unknown sketches are here. The "RAF" sketch with Rob Scneider as Adolf Hitler is funny if a little dated (literally dated - it takes place in 1943). "Philip" and "Lothar Of The Hill People" were two of the most controversial sketchs in the show's history. I didn't enjoy the latter sketch but the former is hysterical. The "Simon" sketch is also very funny. "Dieter's Dream" is an eerie sketch. It's easy to laugh at it (especially Phil Hartman's cameo and the "Electric Company" parody with the German nun), but you can't help but be a little freaked out by it. The "Coffee Talk" sketch features hilarous cameos by Madonna (who delightfully disses herself), RoseannEe Barr and Barbara Streisand. The Material Girl also pops up in "Wayne's Wolrd" in the infamous fanatsy sequence. It's quite gross but very funny to watch Wayne and Madonna tongue - kiss each other and to see Dana Carvey dressed in that balck outfit (the sequence is a parody of the controversial "Justify My Love" video). Also included are his hilarious impressions of Ron Wood and Mick Jagger.

This is a very funny dvd. The extras aren't that great. I enjoyed "Wayne's World" immensely and "Judge Ito" was good to, but the rest didn't do much for me. Buy this for the hilarious regular sketches. Also get Dana Carvey and the other "best - off" collections.

4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT LAUGHS FOR VALUE
Mike Meyers is one of the brightest stars to come from SNL and this brief but nice overview of some of his more famous characters is a delight. From the Japanese gameshow skit with Chris Farley, the bad British teeth faux ad, and many others faetured, this will give you something to laugh at!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff, but where are the extras?!
The sketches on this disc are great, and anyone who is a Mike Myers fan knows there are far more where these came from. But like Amazon reviewer Benjamin LeBaron said, the extras listed on the box are non-existent! I was glad to read that post, because I searched all over the internet to find out if they were hidden features or something. The only extras are some extra sketches, which are good, but the outtakes and dress rehearsals promised on these new SNL discs are NOT included on this Mike Myers one. So if you already have the 1999 release, you might as well keep it because judging by the slow static menu, it's still the same disc.
I stil give it 4 stars based on the Mike Myers sketches. As far as the physicality of the DVD itself, I'd probably give it 1 or 2. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Glorified Home Movie
Bog Creatures shows exactly what can happen when very enthusiastic people get together with a little cash, some knowledge of movie making, a mixed bag of aspiring actors, and a lot of determination, yet all without the necessary knowledge and skills to pull off anything more than a fairly poor looking After School Special (in a bad way, not a nostalgic good way). I mean this is so-so quality home movie / student film stuff if you want to pass it around to family and friends for free. Thankfully, I found it in a discount bin somewhere. Sure, there may be some sort of market out there for this kind of thing, but it is a market that seems to only exist by default because there are so many poor B movies out there. Even more so now in this day and age.

The only people I would recommend this move to is aspiring guerrilla filmmakers. First, I would recommend that they watch the special feature MAKING OF thing included on the disc. See the film crews enthusiasm, their hard work, joy, and very high opinions of their own product. THEN watch the movie. Within a few frames you will hopefully understand what went wrong. Bored, I went through the whole thing and clearly the director and cinematographer tried, but just don't know enough about what they are doing. They knew enough to have fun, but in the long run, without necessary skills, this interprets to: They knew enough to be dangerous. This is like a bad Nickelodeon movie (as apposed to a more decent one I guess). A couple of the actors did ok, and the cool stoner looking dude with the tattoo (real or fake tattoo I know not) was probably the best and most natural and I hope he makes it. But their natural acting talent was what was coming through despite the bad movie, bad script, and so-so directing principles. If the director had spent more time helping these aspiring actors to develop their characters, studying successfully proven camera techniques and lighting principles to direct his crew better, and if the script had been actually worked on instead of written in a week or so (according to the very indulgent documentary) then maybe this could have been more of a film. Instead, it's a film that has a feeling of some potential, and has a few moments in it (due more to the genre than the film itself), but ends up showing nearly every frame, WHAT NOT TO DO. If you want to see what a decent low budget horror movie can really look like, watch Phantasm or even Laserblast. If you want a glorified home movie (no joke), get Bog Creatures.

2-0 out of 5 stars Looks Like An After School Special
This review pertains to a straight to video release called "Bog Creatures". Honestly, I knew better than to watch it for some reason, but I thought a stupid grade B horror film could be fun tonight!
OY was I wrong!
The movie is about some viking warriors that were thrown into a bog, therefore preserving their bodies for thousands of years. Flash forward to the present time. A sexy young group of archeaologists (sp?) are recruited to dig up the preserved bodies from the swamps. Well, you guessed it, the rotting bodies come back to life, rise from the swamps and start stalking and killing the students. Ala a cross between Friday the 13th and a Zombie flick.
Sounds good huh?
The cover art on the DVD case is awesome, very misleading. This movie is sooo cheaply done, it looks like a camcorder. The acting is sooo bad that one of the students has to swallow a pair of underwear after he is caught sniffing them, this scene is sooo bad it is enough to almost make me turn off the film. There is even a scene where a woodsman is leading the students to their campsite, and he points at it, but even the way he points looks "acted".
I won't be a total film snob (hee hee), so I can say if I were 10 years old I would have liked this film in the ways I liked "Saturday The 14th" and "Funeral Home".
The makeup on the Bog creatures themselves looks like the only way the director spent his budget.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bogma
If your a fan of "B" movie horror, put this gem on your rental list. It has its problems (which are usually budget related with this genre), but it's a neat little quirky throwback of a horror movie. If you pick up the DVD, check out the making of documentary (which I almost didn't notice). Seeing what these guys suffered through made the movie that much more enjoyable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Old-fashioned Horror Fun!
I went into this flick expecting run-of-the-mill low budget fare and came out exceedingly surprised! This is not your standard horror movie of today. The movie harkens back to an earlier form... it really is a traditional monster movie with all the delight that entails. The "Bog Creatures" in question are Medieval Danish Vikings who have been preserved as mummies in a peat-bog. When some American Archeology students begin to dig up the bog they awaken an ancient conflict... Now, doesn't that sound like a delicious plotline?! The characters are great. The students are a band of misfits and they are lead by a wacko professor who shares a rather - shall we say "odd"? - relationship with his prodigy sister. This is truly an engaging film, steeped in horror tradition yet packing plenty of surprises and "treats" for the viewer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Caine works
A lousy ending detracts from a fine performance by Michael Caine. He is worth your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars SHINER: Reaching for the Gold Ring
SHINER is the rare movie in which nearly the entire cast have the same unreachable goal: to better themselves at all costs. Director John Irvin does a masterful job of presenting a variety of people, most of whom who ought to know better, who have spent a lifetime in the shadows of their more successful competitors and now struggle to stake out their own claim in a world that prizes only the gold ring of success. Michael Caine is Billy (Shiner) Simpson, a brute thug of a small time boxing promoter who is sure that he has been denied top tier status as a promoter only because of his humble origins. He has the drive to succeed but not the boxing talent. Now, his son, Eddie(Michael Marsden), is ready to fight for the light heavyweight championship of England. Eddie is the ticket that will let Billy pass through the ropes that have heretofore kept him out. Billy is so sure that Eddie will win that he bets his entire stake on a win. Eddie feels the huge pressure of knowing that his father's future rests solely on his fists, and he has to battle his own insecurities that gnaw at him even as he steps into the ring. Martin Landau has a standout role as the American promoter who cannot hide his disdain for the upstart Billy. The tragedy of SHINER is not based on a boxing loss nor would a win by Eddie validate the collective insecure egos of all concerned. The greatness of SHINER lies in its ability to evoke even a wretched sympathy for those who whine about their missed opportunity to hit it big.

4-0 out of 5 stars Back to the Carter days...
This tough British crime film stars Michael Caine as a violent-tempered boxing promoter, Billy Simpson (nicknamed Shiner) who's betting everything on his son to win an upcoming welterweight match against an American fighter--championed by none other than Martin Landau as an equally tough promoter. Things do not exactly go as Shiner hoped they would....

That's the plot focus but it's really the milieu of the British boxing world and Caine's outstanding performance that drive this baby home. Shiner not only has a violent temper; he's also convinced everyone's out to get him. Invoking the same gritty Cockney accent and gangster manner of the lead in the great 1971 Mike Hodges film Get Carter, Caine goes all out. You can see his whole face contort when he's in a rage (often). Compare this to his performance in The Cider House Rules and you can see the terrific range he has.

The supporting cast is very strong with excellent performances by Kenneth Cranham (from the notorious Hellraiser 2), Frances Barber, and many others. This is a great follow-up to Get Carter and an excellent addition to the director's (John Irvin) body of work. Check out his City of Industry with Harvey Keitel, another terrific tough crime film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Caine's Performance of a Lifetime
Billy "Shiner" Simpson (Michael Caine) is a shady boxing producer who has managed to arrange an important match between his son "The Golden Boy" and an American fighter.

Billy is on top of the world on the day of the fight--everything he has worked for culminates in this night--in this fight. And when things begin to unravel, Shiner does anything and everything to keep the fight and his vision of life on track.

Michael Caine plays this role as only he can. He is amusing and slightly sleazy one moment and deadly the next. Is he just a proud father who pushes his son, or is his ruthless ambition completely out-of-control? Michael Caine is the master of the "ice-cold glance," (notice how his eyelids actually shift shape)and this film showcases Caine's remarkable talent for moving seamlessly from a jocular role to instant evil.

If you are a Michael Caine fan, you may also enjoy "Get Carter." The original "Get Carter"--not the Stallone remake.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vintage Caine!
I just watched "Shiner" a couple of days ago and some of the scenes still stay with me. It's a terrific little British gangster movie, with colorful characters and an interesting mix of drama and humor.

Basically, the plot revolves around a small-time boxing promotor with a shady background named Billy "Shiner" Simpson played my Michael Caine. Without giving away too many details, the plot involves a murder mystery and revenge. In this respect, the film is very much like Caine's 1971 ganster film, "Get Carter". The difference is that his character in "Carter" was a young cool, calculating, extremely efficient killer out for revenge. In "Shiner", his character is older, more desperate, and far less efficient. But Michael Caine's performance is a powerhouse. He portrays a man who believes himself to be larger than life and in total control, but is actually as vulnerable as the victims he bullies. The movie revolves around his character and you cannot take your eyes off him. It's a shame that the film went direct-to-video because very few people will see this amazing performance.

As for the other aspects of the film, I have no complaints. The other actor's were ideal for their roles. The jazz-filled soundrack subtly accentuates every scene. And the screenplay is filled with interesting humor and emotion, with a touch of cockney flavor.

The only real problem I have with the DVD transfer is that the audio track wasn't distributed in 5.1 surround sound, as it states on the DVD package, which is a little disappointing...maybe I just got a bad disk. But that is a small quibble considering the rewards of witnessing a great actor doing what he does best! ... Read more
