Description

For two hundred years, no other story has captured the hearts and imagination of the Japanese people more than "Chushingura." When Lord Asano is forced by a corrupt lord to commit hara kiri, forty-seven loyal samurai seek vengeance. Often referred to as the "Gone with the Wind" of the Japanese cinema, "Chushingura" is an unparalleled example of the true samurai spirit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Two Best Samurai Films Ever Made!
This film is one of the two best Samurai films of all time, the other being Kurosawa's SEVEN SAMURAI. CHUSHINGURA ("loyalty") is based on a real incident in 18th century Japan, wherein 47 loyal retainers of a disgraced lord take a vow of vengeance on the corrupt nobleman who caused his downfall and death. The story is timeless, the acting is uniformly magnificent, the camera work is so gorgeous that any frame of this film could be hung in an art gallery, and the music is exciting and heart-lifting. It's a complex plot, following many separate individuals as their vengeance unfolds, so first-time viewers may get confused. No matter -- it all comes together at the end. Watch for the late great Toshiro Mifune in a cameo role as a Master Spearman who becomes drinking buddies with one of the 47, and who takes it upon himself to hold off the cops in the final showdown so that his pal and the other 46 won't be interrupted before they can find and behead the bad guy and fulfill their vow. I have watched this movie many, many times, and I always find something new and wonderful in it. Now that it's FINALLY available on video, don't miss it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Samurai honor, political intrigue, romance, brilliant cinema
I first saw this film in the 60's in a small theater over 3 hours with one intermission. I never left my seat, in fact I started out sitting in the aisle at the back because the theater was full.

The photography is gorgeous with brilliant winter scenes backing up intense sword fights in which you aren't sure what happened until someone keels over dead.

Political betrayal is revenged while honor ultimately prevails. You are immersed in the feudal Japanese world and yet reminded of much the same thing happening today.

Definitely worth seeing and buying once you've seen it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Quintessential Japanese Saga
Chusingura (the 47 Ronin) is a tale that is as popular in Japan -and as often produced - as The Christmas Carol is in the U.S. - and just as revealing of cultural assumptions about right and wrong. There are many versions, each focusing on one of the "47 masterless Samurai" who refuse to surrender and face disgrace out of loyalty to their master. The theme (and story) will be familiar because it's been reworked many times ranging from Gilbert and Sullivan's "Mikado" to "From Here to Eternity."

If you want to gain insight into the Japanese concept of loyalty and the price of honor above all else this is the one movie you should not miss.

The color photgraphy and scene settings are well done and sound is excellent; the acting is also very good and does not lean heavily on over-emoting that is the sometimes "norm" for Japanese films. Sub-titles are a little light, but easy enough to see and this is one of the more accessible versions (many are not available to Western audiences as more recently they tend to be done for annual TV specfials. You won't need to know the history to follow the story - or get the point.

It's a true story of a proud, old fashioned country Samurai who puts the Samurai Code and personal integrity above politics of reality. He's summoned to the Shogun's castle to do his duty - service to the emperor whole messengers are coming through the territory. A corrupt court official expects and demands a bribe to tell the Samurai what he must know of intricate protocol and is outraged when our hero refuses to bend. The official goads him into drawing his sword in the castle - a capital offense, leading to his forced harikiri - suicide.

The remainder of the tale - most of it - is about how the 47 loyal retainers face disgrace and contempt, while biding their time until they can avenge their master. The film has everything: psychological drama, action, passion, greed and pathos - everything in fact that makes life worthwhile.

Don't miss this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Samurai Code in Jeopardy...
Corruption and the samurai code converge in a collision when an old man who favors greed and lust crosses the road with a young noble samurai. The collision triggers a chain of events that causes the young noble samurai to violate the laws of the Shogunate, which affects many lives. The issue of injustice remains unresolved after the unlawful event. However, for some life is insignificant when injustice remains. This epic story reveals that humans do know what is right from wrong, but fear and desire seem to influence each and everyone's choice.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Flawed but Enjoyable Epic
Despite the film's division into two parts, I think the Chushingura is best understood as a complicated story told in three acts.

The first act, culminating in the seppuku of Lord Asano, details the conflict between the young lord and Kira, the Shogun's master of ceremonies, and is, in my opinion, the most interesting as it unfolds logically, tragically, and inevitably towards the spilling of blood in the Shogun's castle. Asano and Kira, at least in this stage of the film, are fully realized and three-dimensional characters, and their conflict can be understood on several levels: idealism versus pragmatism; rural versus urban; and, most centrally, a conflict between different conceptions of honor. Kira is slighted because Asano won't show him the deference he feels he deserves, and Asano cannot accept Kira's attempt to teach him a lesson without fatally wounding his pride. The characters feel real because the situation is developed so carefully, and we as viewers understand why the principal actors behave as they do.

I think the movie bogs down a bit in the second act where the retainers of Asana plot their revenge on Kira. I also feel it is at this point that those unfamiliar with this story may find it difficult to follow the plot. Like the assassination of Thomas Becket in 12th century England, the story of the 47 loyal retainers has left the historian with not only a wealth of primary documents but also of contemporary analysis of exactly how the events were interpreted. Whereas Becket's murder resonated because of the changing perceptions of the limits of temporal power in medieval Europe, the 47 ronin reflect the changing nature of samurai honor following the pacification of Japan under the Tokugawa shogunate. Unfortunately, the movie does little to clarify the issues involved despite a three and half hour presentation. The historical Oishi, for instance, worked patiently behind the scenes for years to restore the clan's honor and holdings under the leadership of Asano's younger brother whereas Horibe represented the more radical view that the ronin owed personal allegiance only to their dead lord. In the movie, by contrast, Oishi makes reference to restoring the clan and questions Asano's judgment at the castle, but it is absolutely unclear in the context of the film whether this represents his true beliefs or is simply part of the feint to divert attention from the plot to kill Kira. It is, in fact, hard to ever discern exactly what Oishi is planning, even in hindsight. Horibe, as the leader of the other wing of the retainers, fairs worse, emerging only as Toshiro Mifune's drinking buddy (Mifune, though always enjoyable to watch, is largely wasted in a sub-plot that is completely superfluous to the story). I don't expect complete historical fidelity, but I do expect the events to develop coherently and to address the main issues of the story. I'm not saying that it is a complete mess, just that it is hard to follow at times, and it is not always clear what motivates the characters, and, as film usually does, some of the subtleties of the real events are lost.

Thankfully, the exciting and famous battle in the snow largely redeems any momentary flagging of interest. My only quibble is that Kira has degenerated by this point into an absolute caricature of his previous self, becoming the embodiment of the man without honor. I suspect this is incorporated less from history and more from the popularizations of this story, e.g., the various kabuki stagings.

Others have spoken of the beautiful visuals, so I won't belabor the point. Suffice it to say this alone is a good reason to watch this film. Others have also spoken of the slow pace. This is also true, and if you demand a tight focus in your movies, this one probably isn't for you. ... Read more

Rain, who is for all intents and purposes a smart woman, leaves because she is guilty about the sins of her father. We love you Rain, it doesn't matter that your father is a punk! Then the Earth is pratically maimed by the DARK GUNDAM, oh my! Can't that thing ever die??? Guess it can, cuz I want a happily ever after to come out of this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Batlles outside of the ring...
After 11 discs which crisscrossed the plot of the Gundam Fight and the Devil Gundam, the former is now finally over. One of the Shuffle Alliance has become the champion (guess who?) and it looks like life will return to normal...sadly, not so. After the revelations of the last disc, Rain has decided that it would be better if she and Domon never saw each other again. Domon avoids this issue until he receives an SOS from Dr Mikamura- the Devil Gundam is back and it's after Rain! Domon heads off to the Neo-Japan colony to rescue her but is attacked by Wong in the Walter Gundam. The former ruler has now been DG cell infected and is determined to take revenge on Domon and claim the Devil Gundam again for himself. Domon receives a final gift from Master Asia- Fuunsaikii, his noble steed. Domon returns and easily defeats Wong and then heads into space for his final battle with the Devil Gundam. Behind him are the rest of the SA and the other surviving fighters... G goes out with a bang. On this disc are some of the show's finest episodes. You'll see why us fans of the original version think Devil Gundam fits Domon's nemesis MUCH better then Dark Gundam and some of the best acting from the Japanese cast, especially Seki Tomkazu's incredible job as Domon. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars An average anime
First..Why is it called Psychic Wars, when it has nothing to do with pschics or anything of that nature? The movie itself has decent animation and adequate fight scenes...but the story is confusing and a tad boring. I wonder why the developers didn't spend more time with it. My advice is to rent it first and make a decision from there...

3-0 out of 5 stars Better Title = Demon Wars
First of all "Psychic Wars" is probably a misleading title. It should be called "Demon Wars." There is nothing psychic going on in the movie, but there certainly are plenty of demons stirring up trouble. Much of the animation is excellent, except for a few parts of the movie where it looks like they simply went with the rough draft of those scenes to get the thing finished. The battle and fight scenes were okay, but some seemed unfinished. Given the short length of the movie (50 minutes) it may have been edited to reduce violence. My major problem was the thin plot line. It had the potential to be a good sci-fi story, but the dialog was poorly written which made a choppy tale.

The story is about an ancient race of demons attempting to return to power after their destruction 5,000 years ago. A doctor who helps a dying elderly female patient inherits her powers as the new guardian against the resurrection of the demon race. He then seems to accidentally travel back in time 5,000 years to witness the demons slaughtering and feeding on humans. He vows to destroy the demon race and nearly succeeds. But some of the demons manage to travel to the future and are waiting for him when he returns to his own time.

As I said, this story could have been made into a much stronger movie with better dialog and finishing those last few parts of sloppy animation (or replacing the cut scenes, if that was indeed the case here). I recommend renting this DVD before deciding to purchase it.

3-0 out of 5 stars THIS MOVIE IS OKAY

5-0 out of 5 stars A acting miracle by the young Leelee Sobieski!!!
I saw this film in a small art house and didn't know what to expect. The movie is long, but it's one of those films that you sit through and can't realize the time and don't care. The young Leelee Sobieski character (Chane) was a smartly written role that only she could pull off. The film starts out with american ex-patriots who spend there time in France while writer Kris Kristofferson and family spend time as discontented americans partying and finding culture in there life. The relationship of the entire family is a telling portrait of people looking for something to cling to and realizing that they have each other. They grow; and we grow with them through the looking glass of the dark theather that takes us away and we want to stay!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Leelee Sobieski is my fav!
A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries is a beautiful depiction of the different stages of a family's life through the eyes of the daughter Charlotte-Ann (Channe). The movie takes place, for the most part in France, where the young girl first experiences gaining an adopted little brother. From there, during her early teenage years she meets a character named Francis Fortescue who loves the opera and becomes Channe's best friend. The father (Chris Christopherson) is having heart trouble and decides to move the family back to the US. Both children handle this change in different ways, the adopted son (Billy) becomes a couch potato and antisocial. Channe reacts by starting to drink, have sex, etc... I won't spoil the ending but let me just say that this is a great traditional movie about how close a family be and how people can solve their problems by sticking together. I have to admit, however, the reason I gave this film such a high rating is because Leelee Sobieski who plays (Channe) is my favorite actress and she is awesome! The movie as a whole is also one of the best I've seen.

4-0 out of 5 stars strong characters, somewhat sleepy story
I watched this movie for the second time (I think) last night with my husband and daughter. The R rating is somewhat extreme for this movie. Aside from Kris Kristofferson's characters rampant swearing, this movie could easily be rated PG-13 and then only for frank discussions about sex between the father and daughter. It could actually be considered a good "coming-of-age" movie for liberal-minded families, though even those who consider themselves liberal might disagree with the father's philosophy on life and his advice for his fifteen-year-old daughter. Of course, if you view the story and follow the plot, you might feel that he was compelled to be deliberate and forthright with her. Unlike many fathers, he takes the time to interact with his daughter and have heart-to-heart talks. This father also takes the time to cultivate his relationship with his wife. Bill and Marcella obviously have a very passionate relationship, but alcohol use is very prevalent as well. In any case, the movie is intriguing. I especially enjoyed the young seven-year-old Channe played by a beautiful young girl (I don't know her name). The scene in the treehouse with the young French actor is realistic enough to be disturbing and frightening. Channe's transition into adolescence (now portrayed by LeeLee Sobieski) is very believable. Her relationship with Francis, also an American, is so frustrating because both characters are so realistic. You feel the anguish that Channe experiences having a friend whom most young people would shun, and over time, Channe would choose to shun as well. Francis is one of those people whom you want to like because he's interesting to be around, but unfortunately, he's also so self-deprecating and self-absorbed and whiny that you can't help but dislike him at the same time. This relationship between Channe and the effeminate, opera-loving Francis might be enough to turn off many viewers.
Channe's adopted brother Billy remains an intriguing enigma throughout the movie and certainly his character could have been fleshed out more. What we gather is that he's sensitive and kind to Channe, but never seems to make friends. In France, we never see him even interact at school, or even grow into adolescence at home. If this is an autobiographical movie, then one could at times only wonder if Channe and her brother lead isolated lives within the family. There are moments of connectedness within her family that do dispel this, however. When Billy arrives with his family in the United States, he seems unhappy and out of place right from the start. There is the slightest hint that he might be quietly gay, and therefore somewhat repulsed by Francis' blatant personality. We experience a moment of unrequited connection between him and Channe's American boyfriend.
One could find so much to explore within this movie- the interracial relationship between Candida (their Spanish or Portuguese maid who, by the way, has a lovely, siren-like singing voice) and her black boyfriend, Candida's fear of commitment and total devotion to Channe, devotion that leaves her lacking the ability to create her own life. Barbra Hershey's portrayal of Marcella, a fun-loving wife and mother with no apparent career aspirations, who turns to alcohol to soften life in Paris as an American in the 60's where it's obvious she and her husband and friends often felt out of place. What's disquieting is that she experiences the same feeling of being an outcast initially when they move back to the United States.
Well worth viewing, though some like my husband might watch the movie and ultimately comment "What's the point?" (and rightfully so, since everyone is entitled to their own opinion). This is not entertainment for entertainment's sake. It is an exploration of relationships.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Waste of Time

5-0 out of 5 stars "American heroes"?!?
A very "heroic" moment in American, or for that matter, world, history--dropping an atomic bomb on a city of 350,000 men, women and children (then, again, 3 days later over a church in Nagsaki)! All of this talk of "heroes" is ridiculous. There are no heroes in war. There is just death. Anyone who has been in war or seen it firsthand will tell you that. Watch this film, read the book (which is quite different from Imamura's breathtaking film), and contemplate what the US has unleashed in the world: the possibility of nuclear destruction of not one city or country, but the entire planet. Hiroshima and Nagasaki are America's guilty conscience. It is well past time for its citizens to take a look at the costs of warfare and imperialism in the Nuclear Age; not to look away, cowardly, or spout some nonsense about "heroes". This film, and the book upon which it is based, is NOT a re-writing of "history". It IS history. A history that Americans are NOT taught. A history that we are too brainwashed to even give a fair hearing. Lopez, Mariposa, etc., you make me ashamed to be an American.

5-0 out of 5 stars A moving tragedy about a young girl's life affected by war.
This film is the first one that I know of that deals with other lesser known aspects of the atomic explosion of Hiroshima. The storey is about a young Japanese girl who was on the outskirts of the city when it was destroyed by an atomic bomb. She witnesses the horror and devastation as she and her family try to reach there Father's factory that is on the other side of town. She takes a boat ride across the bay when it starts raining black ash. That is just the begining of the film and the rest chronicles her life as she struggles to find a husband while under the suspicion that she was contaminated by the blast. When I think of the tragedy of Hiroshima I've always thought of its victims as being instantly vaporized at the moment of explosion. What this film tries to show is that for some victims there pain and suffering would last an entire lifetime. This film is a sublime masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mariposa, et al, is a MORON!
Mariposa, you are a moron, plain and simple. You are not a "patriot", but a fascist pig. The US dropped atomic bombs on two civilian targets, during rush hour in Hiroshima's case, no where near a military target (but in the center of the city) and hundreds of thousands (contemplate this for a moment, if you can) of lives were lost--murder of genocidal proportions. Hundreds of thousands (again, can you imagine a number that high, you fascist?) of innocent lives were ruined forever... left to die painful deaths from radiation sickness. The Imperial Japanese Army, etc., committed countless atrocities and that is not to be deined--however, to take the easy way out, as Mariposa and her ilk have since 1945, and avoid thinking about the REALITY of what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, or to conflate the crimes of one military machine with another ("they started the war" so "we" were "justified" in "ending it" by nuclear genocide) is simply unacceptable. Mariposa and other Floridian inbreds, why don't you work on fixing your electoral system so we don't have another right wing coup d'etat this November, instead of writing idiotic "reviews" of literature or film? You and your kind are such wonderful "patriots", as you put it--why don't you volunteer and head to Iraq to fight Bush's OIL WAR? You moron! Wake up, America, and take a look at the human cost of EMPIRE! (before it is too late...)

1-0 out of 5 stars I agree with Margo
All of us real patriots know who the villians in World War II were. The Japanese started the second world war on December 7th, and we ended it. Any patriot will attest to the fact that our victory was one of our finest moments and still is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Black Rain
Any attack on civillians during war is intolerable. This movie teaches that we should have empathy for those civillians - empathy being Anti-American apparently. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Over-rated by most of these Reviews!
Yes, I do believe that most of these reviewers have over-rated this film. One star indeed - where do you folks get off with such generosity? I too picked it up because of Sandra Bullock's pic on the cover, but I'm convinced that I overspent - I got it free at the library! I will recommend to them that they put it in the fireplace where it can actually be of some value - little though that will be.

1-0 out of 5 stars SAVE YOU'RE MONEY!!!!
I give this movie a -10 stars because this movie isn't even worth one star! Well this film is one of the worst films that I have ever seen and wish to never see again. After about 20 minutes into the movie, I fell asleep. This is even worse than when my daughter watch the Teletubbies and they were colorful and did have some method to the madness!!! I gave this DVD away, because it was so horrible, and believe it or not...the darn thing was returned to me with a note that read: "Thanks, but no THANKS!!!" I guess that note says it all. I have filed this "movie" (and I use that term very loosely), in file 13 -- THE TRASH!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very near the worst movie I've seen
The only movies that come to being as bad as this movie have all been on Mystery Science Theater. I'm sure this one would end up there if it weren't for all of the violence. The acting is downright horrible (never made it to the part with Sandra in it... I was about to throw up after 30 minutes and couldn't take any more). The cinematography is even worse... some of the worst angles, light/dark problems, etc. I've ever seen. I'm convinced games like Doom took their idea from this movie... there are shots where you are following guns around and watching them shoot people.

Another reviewer mentioned that High Schoolers could make better movies... I agree and I'm not so sure a middle schooler couldn't.

I found this one in the bargain bin at Walmart... it doesn't belong in the bargain bin, it belongs in the trash bin.

1-0 out of 5 stars what a bummer
I HAVE SEEN WORSE, 1950S SCREEMING SKULL, THE BRAIN THAT WOULDNT DIE.
I WANT MY 90 MINS. BACK!
I FOUND THE ORIGINAL MOVIE POSTER DIDNT HAVE SANDRA ON THE POSTER AT ALL, IT SEEMS LIKE A GOOD MARKETING PLOY TO PURCHASE THIS DVD , LIKE I DID. THIS MOVIE HAS HORRIBLE STORY , HARD TO FOLLOW,THE ONLY SAVING GRACE WAS SANDRA .
IT WAS A BIT LIKE LOOKING AT AN OLD YEARBOOK.
ACTION PACT, EDGE-OF-YOUR SEAT THRILLER, I THINK NOT , IT TOOK 2 WATCHINGS, BETWEEN NAPS TO FINISH.

1-0 out of 5 stars High School kids have done better movies
Save your money. I bought it, regret it, and filed it in the trash. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
This poor quality flick barely kept my attention. I would list it next to the Ed Wood films. I didn't expect a blockbuster, but a good movie would have been nice. Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars UNDER RATED MICHELLE PFEIFFER MOVIE
Michael Pfeiffer stars in this Hollywood tale of glitz and glamor set in the thirties she plays a rising starlet who is in love with a married man and together display uncontrolable passion. With her career on the line, despite hollywood's gossip and scandall, she chooses to continue her affair. When tragedy strikes she must forever live with overwhelming guilt, feelings of betrayl and heartbreaking lonliness. Pfeiffer delivers a stunning performance in this classic tael of love, passion & scandal.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Divine movie I've ever seen!
I loved Power Passion and murder! I could watch it over and over again. Michelle was absolutely divine. I actually thik it diserves more than 5 stars. Way more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good solid film
Jesse Owens is a Hero.he stood Hate in the Face&Looked it down and was a Champion not only of Sport but of Human Rights.Dorian Harewood a Good Actor who i have seen in countless films does a solid job here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great story... is it all true?
I am a major fan of Jesse Owens, and this film is definitely for fans. Dorian Harewood portrays Jesse very well, but almost in a god-like perfection. Of course, biographies are supposed to emphasize good qualities, but this film leaves you wondering if Jesse Owens had any bad ones. Still a very good film, and an excellent way to introduce people who don't know about him to a great role model, a great athlete and world class human. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Julia Roberts
First and for the record, Julia Roberts makes a small appearance in this film (made way, way, WAY before she became famous). You may not recognize her (apparently one reviewer hadn't) and she probably is quite happy with that. As for the film itself, I found it to be a wacky sexy farce in the tradition of Police Academy, Porky's and all those other films I wasn't allowed to see when I was in high school (but did). There is lots of nudity (and the bodies look great), but what's wrong with nudity as long as everyone is having fun? Lots of kids watch slasher films with an equal amount of nudity and I would rather have kids see this film. Saying it's for everyone is a stretch (this is a solid R-rated film), but if you're not a prude, not a feminist, and just like to have a good time, it is enjoyable to watch. A cult favorite on a lot of college campuses during "underwear only" parties if everyone has a water gun and uses it during the water hose scenes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Julia Roberts really IS in this movie !!
For the longest time I swore Julia had nothing to do with this awful movie, but sure enough there she is - in bright red pants walking up a staircase in the Firehouse. She doesn't say a word, but it sure is a trip to see her.

1-0 out of 5 stars LAME
This was the worst movie I have ever seen. Please don't waste your time with it. It was stupid and not the least bit funny.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nasty movie!
I cannot believe Julia Roberts was in this movie... That is a travesty ... Read more
