The Phildelphia Examiner exposed the brutality, won a Pulitzer Prize, and stopped Rizzo's runaway train before he could change the city charter and run for a third term. "The Thin Blue Lie," a painful title, revisits the time and chronicles the reporters (Rob Morrow and Randy Quaid)who busted the story. The camerawork is a little cheap and the soundtrack is little too omnipresent, but the movie's a quick, dirty, 90-minute pleasure for a lazy day. Morrow is a go-getter and new in town. Quaid is the good-natured newsman who wants to get his two stories a day and go home. As usual, the go-getter reveals the good natured sort as a victim of blind apathy, and the two combine forces, so to speak, to ferret out brutalized victims, as well as a [tough] cop who likes to go to work on suspects with a pair of handcuffs. There's even a lifesized white rabbit involved. Morrow has the arrogant...schtick down cold. And Quaid broadens his range. Paul Sorvino has a cup of coffee as the tantrum-throwing Rizzo. Aside from G.W. "Proctor!!!" Bailey -- longtime "Police Academy" villain -- the supporting clan are actors I don't know, but have sufficiently big 1970s hair. I like newspaper movies, usually because they're based on true stories -- aside from the ludicrous "The Pelican Brief" -- and because they cover familiar-yet-enjoyable ethical questions. Morrow's character is confronted by other reporters who make it clear Rizzo's regime lets them safely walk the streets at night. Morrow hasn't been around long enough to know the difference. In that detail, you sense how complacent a newsforce can become in the wake of a powerful leader, and how a fresh pair of eyes can see the injustices others have let fall through the cracks. ... The place - a Pennsylvania steel town in the grips of a recession. Against this less-than-pleasant backdrop is set a story of jealousy and violence. Who did what to who? Why did who do what to who? Who is telling the truth about what who did what to who and why who did what to who? Although this movie should have been good, it comes across as mediocre. The acting is so-so, some sections of the movie seem to wander, it leaves you with the feeling that it should have been better. Ah well, that's show business!!! ... Read more

BASIC PLOT: SERIES OPINIONS: DVD: OVERALL:
The Waterfowers of Cerulean City - Ash arrives at the Cerulean City Gym, but when he enters it, there does not seem to be any sign of a Gym Leader. In fact, a water ballet is being preformed! Will Ash find the Gym Leader and earn his next badge? The Path to the Pokemon League - Heading for Vermilion City, Ash stops by an unauthorized Gym, with a leader who has won 98 matches in a row! Can Ash beat this powerful trainer? Either way, he learns an important lesson about Pokemon. The School of Hard Knocks - The three friends stop while in a deep forest for a rest, when Ash finds a group of boys bullying another. Ash later learns that these boys go to the Pokemon Seminar School, the most well respected Pokemon School in the region. But can Ash figure out why so many of the students are so unhappy? The video/audio is no more, no less than you could ask for on a TV show. Overall, a great buy for a fan of the series. Followed by "Poke-Friends".

Get the show on the Road - Ash and Pikachu arrive in their destination: Littleroot Town! Unfortunately, Pikachu is ill. Ash and Professor Birch try desperately to save it. Finally, Ash meets a new friend and companion, a girl named May with her new Torchic. It's a good start to a good season. A ruin with a view - Ash and May stop in Oldale Town to rest, and are intrigued by some old ruins. A mysterious team interferes, and they hurry to save the Pokemon Center and the ruins from this mysterious Team Magma. Team Aqua and Magma are one of the reasons to even watch this season, and though they don't quite reveal their intentions yet, they will soon enough! There's no place like Hoenn - Ash and May finally arrive in Petalburg City - site of the first Hoenn Gym! Ash can't wait to challenge the gym leader, but May is nervous and stays away from the gym. Ash wonders if she knows the Gym Leader, but shrugs it off and goes to battle! There, he meets a boy named Max, an expert on Pokemon despite his age.... and a gym leader! Shortly before the battle, he finds out that Max is May's younger brother, and the real gym leader is May's father Norman. He can't battle in a gym match yet, because he has only one Pokemon, but after a practice match, May's Torchic is stolen! Can Ash and his new friends recover it? This is a wonderful episode, and though battle fans will find the lack of real gym match disappointing, Pikachu and Vigoroth's battle is very satisfying. You never can Taillow - Ash and his new friends May and Max end up in a forest inhabited by many Taillow. Ash immediately wants to catch one of the plucky flying-types, but so does Team Rocket! Meanwhile, they also meet an old friend of Ash's: Brock! This is a fun episode and now Ash's group is complete. In the knicker of time - Ash and friends meet a boy named Nicolai, who disguises himself as Pokemon to make it easier to capture them. He wants to catch a Zigzagoon, but first battles May and defeats her. Deciding that the gym leader Norman will be easy if his daughter is easy, he rushes off to catch Zigzagoon. However, his comments severely offend Max and May, and May's brother decides to sabotage Nicolai's Zigzagoon trap. He ends up in a sticky situation surrounded by Zigzagoon! Everything turns out right in the end, and it's a great and funny episode. May and Max quarrel a lot, reminiscent of Ash and Misty, and provide a lot of laughs during this episode. My favorite on the DVD. This is a great intro to the Hoenn Region, and contains five good episodes. My favorite on this DVD is "In the Knicker of Time," but the other four are also good. The VHS version leaves out two episodes, so I'd recommend getting the DVD. ... Read more

You might think that this disc would be grainy, or soft, or with poor contrast, particularly since it's from the legendary poverty row studio PRC, and a few other PRC videos are so-so. Truth is, although the film was released by PRC, it was produced by Universal Studios! You'll be exceedingly happy to discover that the transfer to DVD is outstanding. Contrast is excellent, and the image is sharp and clean. This is a Criterion-level transfer here! Sound is nice and clean too. Of course, the disc hasn't anything in the way of extras. Running time is just about an hour, the case is a snapper. If you're interested in the related films, this one is the last of the "Creeper" films. The Creeper is Rondo Hatton's "signature role" begun in 1944 in the Rathbone/Bruce Sherlock Holmes film PEARL OF DEATH, followed by 1946's HOUSE OF HORRORS, and finally THE BRUTE MAN (which was indeed Hatton's last film).
This cheap PRC production has Hatton hunt down the people responsible for his disfigurement (an explosion in his college lab) and also murder various others who get in his way. The victims include a nosy shop assistant and a jeweller who insists that Hatton pay for a broach. Meantime, he falls in love with a blind woman but she eventually betrays him to the police and he tries to kill her too. One of the amusing things about this movie is that there's supposed to be a huge Dragnet out for Hatton but he's always walking down the street openly despite his looks and appearance. He actually doesn't give a bad performance. Deapite his reputation as The Ugliest Man Alive his looks aren't really bad enough to warrant the screaming reaction he gets from some of his victims. Film is padded out by some silly footage involving the investigating police (at one point playing cards when the Commissioner comes in and then taunting him). A pretty silly script and a general lack of style. ... Read more

The colors in this are bright and cheery, and the dialogue can get rather childish and goofy at some points. Not that this is a bad thing--these girls are still in junior high, so they are making the transition out of childhood. The designs for the wedding dresses and the 'armored' outfits are top notch and gorgous to look at, which is a definite plus. There are six episodes on this dvd; this is a bonus considering that many dvds only have two or three episodes for the same price. And while there are not many extras, just the usual clean opening/closing animation, I still felt I got my money's worth with this dvd. I saw these episodes a few years back on fansub, and loved them. I had always thought that there must be more to the story, since the girls had not had a chance to do anything (and I knew that another heroine was coming), but the video store only had the two tapes. Imagine my excitement when I found out that there are other volumes after this one! So I am eagerly awaiting the second dvd, not just because it has new episodes I've never seen, but in the hopes that my favorite character will (finally) arrive.... I have also read the translated manga, and I recommend that as well. All in all, I suggest you get this dvd if you are into shows like Sailor Moon, Revolutionary Girl Utena, or any other type of magical girl show. You will not be disappointed. Both the dub and sub versions of Wedding Peach are good, though I tend to watch the Japanese version cause its what I saw first and think is better. But you can make your own decision.

The plot is tight, economical and well crafted....taciturn, moody Detective Frank Bullitt (McQueen) is charged with the protection of a key witness vital to an upcoming trial involving Mafia connections. Whilst hidden away in a supposed secure location, the witness and his police guard are brutally gunned down by unknown assailants. The heat is turned up on Bullitt by his tough Captain (Simon Oakland) and the manipulative, opportunistic politician Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn) to come up with the right answers fast ! Between the draining investigation, Bullitt struggles to maintain his relationship with his cultured, sensitive girlfriend, Cathy (Jacqueline Bisset) Primarily coming from a TV series background, Englishman Peter Yates (directing his fourth movie) did a commendable job as director on "Bullitt"...producing a complex, intense crime thriller with a unique style that would ultimately influence many other films. Yates would later to go onto direct Robert Mitchum in the excellent "sleeper" crime film "The Friends of Eddie Coyle" ! And of course "Bullitt" is reknowned for it's now legendary car chase between Frank Bullitt's 390 GT Mustang and the two hitmen in their black, Dodge Charger 440 Magnum barrelling through the city streets and highways of San Francisco....just don't pay too much attention to how many times they pass that slow-moving, green VW Beetle !! The DVD transfer is excellent in both sound and picture quality, and the Limited Edition Set with the extra goodies (Single sheet poster, shooting draft, lobby cards etc.) is a real bonus for keen film fans !! One of my favourite cop thrillers....McQueen sizzles on screen !!
The good and the bad: True, there is a high-speed car chase in part through the hilly streets of San Francisco. Is it "the best ever" chase? Depends on how you look at it. Plus - It was very high speed. Plus - It had a cool-looking Mustang fastback vs a big GTO. Negative - They pass the same VW 4 times, and another car 2 times (why? if not intentional, then very poor continuity) Negative - double-shifting or not, there are about 97 too many gear changes, and some of those are at top speed on the flat stretch near the end. Neg - the bad guys lose too many hubcaps. Still, it's fairly exciting. However, though not car vs car, I think the chase in "The French Connection" is as good if not better. As for the drama, some of it seemed a bit drawn out. Lt. Frank Bullitt is supposed to protect the state's witness "Ross" against the Chicago "Organization". Ross and one cop are shot, and Ross is later killed in the hospital, where Bullitt is hanging out. Bullitt does not want the prosecutor who gave him the assignment (Robert Vaughan) to know Ross died, so he will have time to find the killers. Turns out Ross may not be who the cops think he is, and this leads to a good foot-chase across the airport runways and the airport itself. Some of the police procedure as portrayed in the movie is rather shoddy - such as handling a lot of evidence, then asking for it to be fingerprinted, etc. The pretty: Bullitt has a girlfriend played by Jaqueline Bisset, who gives him grief for his callous attitude. This sets up the final scene of the movie where Bullitt ambiguously questions his existence. Otherwise, her appearance in the movie is useless. Good acting by McQueen and Vaughan. Look for Robert Duval, Georg Sanford Brown, Norman fell, Simon Oakland and a few other names. The jazzy score by Lalo Schifrin sounds like a bad TV movie. Wide-screen movie has decent picture and sound quality. DVD extras include a short behind the scenes documentary, text-based cast/crew/location info, list of awards, and a trailer. In short - Not the best cop movie, not the best McQueen movie, and not the best chase. Watchable but not a stand out. ... Read more

Don "The Dragon" Wilson, WKA World Light-Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion, stars in BLOODFIST V:HUMAN TARGET, a movie very much in the tradition of Hong Kong cinema. "The Dragon" plays Jim Stanton, a federal agent hell-bent on breaking up the arms-smuggling ring of Kwon, a nefarious Chinese criminal whose latest deal involves some stolen plutonium. Unfortunately, Stanton is shot in the head and left for dead by some of Kwon's meanies. He awakens in a hospital bed with his memory completely erased. Both Kwon and Stanton's superiors, who believe he's become a double agent, have him at the top of their hit lists, making his "wife" Candy (Denice Duff) his only ally. There's no denying that HUMAN TARGET's martial arts sequences are lavish and flashy. One of the great things about Don "The Dragon"'s movies is that he's always given worthy opponents to go toe-to-toe with. In HUMAN TARGET, one of them is Steve James, whose been in such karate gems as the AMERICAN NINJA series. I rank him at the same level of all the best opponent's Don "The Dragon" stuck it out with, including Billy Blanks (BLOODFIST), Maurice Smith (BLOODFIST II), Gary Daniels (BLOODFIST IV:DIE TRYING), and Matthias Hues (BLACKBELT). Still, it's Don "The Dragon"'s movie, all the way, and how better to showcase his astonishing kickboxing abilities than to put him in a Hong Kong-esque kung fu movie?
