5-0 out of 5 stars "THEY'LL GET YOU IN THE END."
These are two of the greatest B movie classics of the 80s I've ever seen. It's low-budget cinema at its finest and never ceases to entertain an audience. The Ghoulies are one of the most popular monster movies ever made and though the special effects are cheesy and the acting is sometimes bad, it's all in all a scary (and FUNNY!) movie series. (Though 3 & 4 sucked!) With this DVD, you get two great movies for one low price in a special double feature bundle all in one single disk! They are both the original "Ghoulies" & the sequel "Ghoulies II".

"GHOULIES" (1985)
Rating: ****

The one that started it all! A story about young Jonathan and his girlfriend, Rebecca who inherit a mansion which used to be used for an evil cult. After Jonathan finds a mysterious book about summoning demons, all hell breaks loose! (literally!) But soon the evil also corrupts Johnny and the little demons called Ghoulies obey his every command as their master. The original master of the Ghoulies rises from his grave (close to Jonathan and Rebecca's home coincidently) and from there the troublemaking, toilet gurgling monsters begin to kill all of Jonathan's guests! Regretting his actions after losing his one true love and friends, Jonathan does battle with the evil warlock.

OVERALL: Good! This one has some of the most cheesiest special effects in the WHOLE series considering all the Ghoulies are mostly puppets. There's also plenty of bad acting and ridiculous jokes involved so don't expect an academy award from this turkey except to have a good time watching it for it's grand entertainment. RATED: PG-13 for mild violence, drug use, brief sexuality, and some language.

"GHOULIES II" (1987)
Rating: *****

A LOT better than the original! The second installment picks up where the first left off. The Ghoulies are nearly destroyed by an old man but one of them is able to put him out quickly. After hitching a ride in the infamous 'Satan's Den', a travelling haunted house attraction owned by a young boy named Larry and his uncle Ned, they wind up at the local town carnival and from there, once again the demons start wreaking havoc! The attraction quickly makes a fortune, thanks to the efforts of the Ghoulies. (or "rats" as the tourists call them) However, some of the people who enter the hanuted house never come back out alive! When Uncle Ned is killed by them however, Larry vows to destroy them all before even more innocent people are killed!

OVERALL: Great! A VERY fun and exciting sequel with an even higher budget than that of the first. The Ghoulies effects in this one are simply amazing for its time and even the acting is well done at times. It's also a better black comedy than that of the first, and the Ghoulies are funny (but incredibly SCARY!) at the same time. Believe it or not, this one actually gave me nightmares! I especially enjoyed the climatic ending, where the Ghoulies run amok in the carnival and begin cooking up more of their mischief! The giant demon-eating Ghoulie is possibly the most cheesiest I've ever seen and looks almost as if it's a Halloween costume somebody's wearing. (Godzilla anyone?) I loved this one more than the original! RATED: R for graphic violence, sexual references, and some language. Well in this DVD, it got changed to PG-13, but I do agree with some of these reviewers here that it should've been R rated because there is plenty of shocking blood and gore to be found in this one.

All-in-all a fun trip back in time to one of the most popular 80s horror flicks and goes excellent with some soda (or beer) and popcorn! MGM did a good job with remastering these cult classics and both films are in their WIDESCREEN anamorphic format, giving the viewer a more theatrical feel to them. Sure they're not the best in the world, but for those of you starting up a horror collection (like me) they are worth owning and watching over and over again! Just be sure to check all the toilets in your house the next time you decide to use the bathroom! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent MGM Double Feature DVD!
MGM has done an admirable job for this new Double Feature DVD. It contains both Ghoulies and Ghoulies 2, both presented in Animorphic Widescreen with their original theatrical trailers. The picture and sound are as good as we're ever going to see these two films on DVD. A great value, even if you only wish to buy it for one of the movies.

GHOULIES was an early release from Charles Band and Empire Pictures, predating the later Full Moon Pictures. The budget was fairly low for the mid-1980's, but it is still an enjoyable late-night film.

GHOULIES 2 was the sequel and probably had a little larger budget. It featured more talented actors (Royal Dano, Phil Fondacaro, Starr Andreeff, Sasha Jenson) and the Ghoulies are a little more animate than in the original movie. On a whole it is better than the original in many ways.

There were two more later sequels (Parts 3 & 4) to the Ghoulies franchise...maybe they will also come to DVD someday soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars GoooGaaah!
Yep, you heard it right from the mouth of a screaming ghoulie: GoooGaah! These films aren't horrific, they're slapstick comedy. Anyone who thinks a midget monster running out of corners, or shooting out of toilets, is not funny, well, maybe they need to grow up and face the demons in their life, because there is much more scarier things out there than midget Satanists. The films are like the Cabbage Patch Kids Gone Wild, and Green, and some fuzziness too. I'd yet to see a flick where a cute blond picks up a ghoulie thinking it's a doll, and it bites a chunk out of her face, now that would tip me out of my chair. I just love the cheesy effects and puppeteering in these films. It's a classic for all those people who love to see cheesy horror flicks.

Just a reminder before you decide to sit on the pot:

Turn on the light and flush the ghoulie before he eats you.

FLUSH! GOOOGAAAH! BLURP!

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Awsome Flicks
These are two awsome films that mgm has put on one disk. Ghoulies 2 is a but better than Ghoulies. Anyway, the first one is so cheezy, it's a great 5 star in my book. The second is more of a low budget gore infested flick that is once again a 5 star movie in my book. The second should not be PG-13. It should be R no doubt about it. It is gory with nudity, sex and coarse language. Anyway, the first Ghoulies is about a young man who has inhareteda mansion. I curse was put on him and no one knows but his caretaker Wolfgang. Soon, the affects come in and the young man calls up the Ghoulies. Ghoulies are ugly little creatures that come out of water and the ground. But when the Ghoulies real master shows up when a party is going on, the Ghoulies go wild and eat everyone in sit. Ghoulies is a violent movie for PG-13 but than again R would be to high for it.
Ghoulies 2 is about the nasty looking demons who hitch a ride with a carnival. When the carnival sets up, the Ghoulies hide in a haunted house at the carnival. The haunted house is a spooky ride called Saten's Den, but it just got spookier since the Ghoulies arrive. When all the customers go into Saten's den, they ain't coming out. Ghoulies 2 is very violent for a PG-13 rating and should be R. But what can you do about.
So, two good low budget films that are great for parties. Get this dvd. It's worth every penny.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great B flicks but where's the music video?
Ghoulies 1. Havent seen it in so long I forgot how cheesy it is. But that dont make it bad. I really enjoyed it again. Even though I didnt get the dvd from Amazon (I got it at Walmart) I still recommend getting it. Preferably through Amazon though. I really like the fact these two flicks are widescreen and their is trailers for each but the only dissapointment besides two sided discs is where the heck is the awesome music video by WASP. One of the best heavy metal bands in existence. They done Scream Until You Like It for the soundtrack which you can hear in the flick (part 2 that is). Unless the video plays after the credits or is an easter egg I cant seem to find it. Anyway 4 stars for both flicks and I agree with a few other reviewers that pt 2 is better. ... Read more

Samantha (Angie Everhart) has a bright career ahead of heruntil her boyfriend tricks her into helping him with a burglary that turns tomurder. Sam takes the rap, and when she gets out of jail four years later, herlife in tatters, she's looking for revenge. Turns out her boyfriend's joined the mob and there's a maverick cop (James Russo) who's going to force herto help him get the Big Boss. The dialog is lame and the plot isludicrous in this direct-to-video distaff variation on Payback. It's thesort of movie in which Angie sneaks off and shoots a buncha bad guys, so thecop threatens to throw her in jail. She sneaks off again--bang, bang, bang--he threatens to throw her in jail again. This goes on three orfour times. Former supermodel Everhart skulks and scowls her way through the picture, but even her greased-up hair and grunged-down outfit can'thide those glorious cheekbones.Eric Roberts phones in another one for the paycheck.Only Joe Penny, as a mid-level mobster, brings any life tothe party. All that being said, the film works on its most fundamental level--as the story of a woman grimly seeking revenge because it's theonly meaningful response to what life has dealt her. --Geof Miller ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good action movie
I confirm other positive reviews about this work...
The best moments are clearly those where Ms.Everhart is engaged in action shoots (I think that Angie should exploit more this kind of role than those ones played in psycho-thrillers like the most recent The Last Cry... le physique est avec elle... in every sense) yet I'd have liked the captivity part to be a little developed... 5/10 min would have been enough and not have compromised the budget (IMO).

ps: actually I must admit that the first reason for me to rent this movie has been the presence of Angie "Redhot" Everhart but I've not been disappointed... bear in mind that this is the first movie of her I've seen where she has been wearing her dresses... full time... and that's is a compliment by me.

4-0 out of 5 stars bittersweet
An excellent movie, Angie Everhart was a Refreshing departure from the normal helpless female, a sharp intelligent lady with a lot of positive mental attitude, More of the same Please!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh, The Humanity!
Don't you just love a good science fiction/action film? You know, one of those movies about a bunch of people zooming around the cosmos in a spaceship who suddenly find themselves in some type of trouble requiring them to land on an unfriendly planet, asteroid, base, moon, or some other celestial body? If you do love those types of movies, and I know I do, then avoid "Convict 762" like the plague. Oh, this movie follows the formula to a T, but "Convict 762" ranks as one of the most boring, illogical, downright idiotic science fiction films to come across my television screen in some time (and that's saying A LOT). Why anyone made this straight to video clunker is beyond me. Somebody named Luca Bercovici directed this dreck, just in case you want to know who is to blame for this nearly two-hour catastrophe. Yep, "Convict 762" is that bad, failing on nearly every level of moviemaking imaginable.

The plot: a shipload of ladies flying through space accidentally, due to the incompetence of a crew member, flies into an asteroid field where the ship loses a large amount of its fuel in a collision. Since they no longer have enough power to get back to base, the captain of the vessel, named Niles and played by Shannon Sturges, decides to land at a penal colony in order to repair and refuel the ship. There is a lot of grumbling about this decision, with some blather about other ships avoiding this place like the plague, but Niles throws caution to the wind and heads into disaster. As the ship drifts down to the prison, the crewmembers spot two guys fighting each other in weird spacesuits. Failing to raise anyone on the radio, intrepid Captain Niles continues on, managing to break up the fight by bumping one of the guys with the space ship (!) before landing. Soon there is some story about a prison riot resulting in massive fatalities because "convict 762" went on a rampage. References made throughout the movie speak about how this convict is beyond human in his capacity for killing, he's death, he's disease, and all that stuff. Needless to say, Niles and company pick up both of these guys without any idea which one is 762. That's what the whole movie revolves around: who is convict 762 and will the crew discover the truth before he goes on another killing spree.

The biggest problem with "Convict 762," apart from the terrible acting, atrocious script, molasses-like pacing, and cheesy CGI effects, is the infinite stupidity shown by Niles and the crew. This movie simply possesses no logic to speak of, as Niles repeatedly makes decisions that are the height of idiocy. When the killings start, she blithely sends crewmembers off to their deaths by letting people separate from the group. One member of the ship's crew is a real troublemaker, but Niles continually lets her roam about so she can cause further havoc on her fellow shipmates. The worst decision Niles makes occurs at the end of the film, and is so moronic that I simply could not believe my eyes. It is obvious the director threw this in just so the film could have a little nudity. "Convict 762" reeks of inanity from top to bottom.

The question that continually arose in my mind while I watched this movie (it should have been "why am I watching this?") was why Billy Drago agreed to co-star in this wretched project. If you are familiar with Drago, and you will be as soon as you see him, he always plays great onscreen villains. In "Convict 762," he plays Mannix, one of the guys Niles picks up from the penal colony. Usually, Drago is fascinating to watch, but here he is largely wasted in an unsatisfying role. By the way, how is it possible for Mannix to be on fire for nearly five minutes and then suddenly arise, ready for combat? Maybe I should not ask questions that have no answers. The other guy character, Frank Zagarino, is downright offensive to even the basest sensibilities in the role of Vigo. In fact, every character endlessly grated on my nerves. There is a scene in one of the "Wayne's World" films where Garth hears a Kenny G song and undergoes a flashback about a painful trip to the dentist. When I think about "Convict 762" now, I have a slightly different type of flashback, a flashback to grade school when a fellow student raked his fingernails down a chalkboard. That's the only sensation I can equate with viewing "Convict 762."

Will Niles and company escape the wrath of convict 762? I didn't care if anyone made it in the end and neither will you after surviving this film. Actually, I would rather fight convict 762 armed only with a Q-Tip than watch this movie again. This picture is just a bad, unentertaining quagmire of a movie that should deeply offend anyone who appreciates the science fiction genre. There are good, low budget sci-fi films out there, but one usually has to wade through movies like this to find them. What a shame.

4-0 out of 5 stars Drago Menacing As Ever in "Convict"
Actor Billy Drago (Deadly Heros, Freeway) has been making movies since the 80's. He is type-casted as a subtle psychotic killer with unique behaviors that he has made his signature. For fans, he is a guaranteed good time in the bizarre behavior department. He remains true to his craft in "Convict 762". The movie has good casting, Frank Zagarino (Never Say Die) and Shannon Sturges (Tornado!), who use their air time well in this deadly game of cat-and-mouse. There's good action in this low-budget sci-fi thriller and it keeps the viewer entertained and wondering what's what. This movie is worth the time and a must have for Mr. Drago fans and sci-fi lovers.

2-0 out of 5 stars A so-so sci-fi thriller that's 20 minutes too long
'Convict 762' centers on a scavenger starship crew that consists entirely of beautiful women that's forced to seek out a penal colony (insert pun here) in order to refuel. They discover the colony has been all but destroyed by a riot, and that one of the two surviving men is a dangerous prisoner known as Convict 762. The heroines and the plot stumble along from this point.

While 'Convict 762' has okay special effects and set construction for what is most assuredly a low-budget effort, pretty good actiing all around, and delivers some tense moments, these positives are overwhelmed by insipid dialogue and characters who behave in such idiotic fashion that there is no doubt they are natural blondes.

Of course, characters behaving stupidly in movies where monsters and killers are stalking them is not unusual for a film. However, 'Convict 762' goes well beyond the boundaries of what is typically found. One of the main characters behaves so stupidly in the last 10-20 minutes of the film that I knocked a star off for it.

If you think you might enjoy a film that's an 'Alien'-light packed with braless women in tank-tops but burdened with a failed effort to deliver a Message, you might consider ordering this one. However, I advise you to stop the tape after the scene in sickbay, following the fight in the cargo bay and just picture in your mind's eye that the space ship takes off and flies away. While you'll miss a gratuitous love scene, you will come away with a much better impression of how good this film is.

Watch it to the end at your own peril. You'll never get those minutes of your life back. ... Read more
