Entourage is everything viewers have come to expect from an HBO series: smart, hilarious, and highly addictive, especially when taken in full-season, DVD form. As implied in the title, the show follows Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier), a rising Hollywood star with bedroom eyes and an over-active libido, along with his three childhood companions-turned-hangers-on. Kevin Dillon plays Johnny Drama, Vincent's less-attractive, B-list actor of a brother (he is Matt Dillon's less-attractive, B-list actor of a brother in real life). Jerry Ferrara plays Turtle, the weasel, and Kevin Connolly appears as Eric, the Everyman hero who hopes to parlay his friendship with Vincent (plus two years of community college) into a career in talent management. Along the way Eric contends with the predictable self-doubt, romantic indecision, etc. The cast is rounded out by Jeremy Piven (Doug Hughley from Singles) as a foul-mouthed agent reminiscent of Jay Mohr's short-lived Peter Dragon character. Finally, it's produced by Marky Mark himself--and you've got to believe that guy knows something about the star-entourage relationship. If possible, watch with a friend so you'll have someone to quote lines back to later. --Leah Weathersby ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The TV show equivalent of a Little Debbie Swiss Cake Roll
...which is to say rich, sugary, not very nutritious but tasty and addictive as hell. It's junk food, no doubt about it, but it's also so enjoyable it's pretty hard to begrudge.

Four friends live together and hang out around L.A.: Vince is a DiCaprio-level star on the rise (though he's reportedly loosely based on producer Mark Wahlberg); Eric is his best friend, a smart kid trying to help him manage his career; and Turtle and Johnny Drama (Vince's has-been older half-brother) are the comic relief.Adding shards of garlic to the mix is Jeremy Piven as Ari, Vince's razor-tongued agent who, were he played by anybody other than Piven, would probably be too much to digest in such an otherwise tangy environment.

In stark contrast to most HBO Sunday night shows ("Sopranos," "Six Feet Under," "Deadwood," all of which usually leave me feeling devastated and so much the better for it) this is bummer-free TV.The characters don't have to work, don't have to worry about money, have infinite free time and access to women and recreational misadventures.Even in those rare moments when they have an actual problem it's never really a pressing problem ("Eric, which movie should I do???").And each episode seems to end with the main characters sharing a drink while watching the sun set from some beautiful vista.

And you know what? Why not?The show ain't exactly Tolstoy but it's a lot of shiny, colorful fun -- smart dialogue, sharp "inside baseball" industry jokes, attractive ladies, cool toys and an eclectic mix of hip-hop and classic rock. It's like HBO fused the Y chromosome of "Larry Sanders" with the X chromosome of "Sex and the City" and came up with a precocious but charming little tyke.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Show ! Can't wait for Season 2 to start
This show is truely awesome. The dialogue is amazing and suits every situation in the show perfectly. Kevin Dillon and Jeremy Piven are hilarious. You couldn't ask more from a supporting cast. The music is really good too. Anybody have any info on a soundtrack?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic show
Entourage is the show produced by and loosely based on Mark Wahlbergs rise into tinseltown with his best friends. The show is witty, well written and will keep you laughing from start to finish. The second season starts on June 5th on HBO, and proves to be an even bigger and better. The boys travel to the sundance film festival for tons of laughs, I was an extra for these episodes and guarantee this will be one hell of a season. So get watching!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great series
If you've already seen the first season of Entourage, you'll be buying this set for sure.If you haven't seen it, you really need to buy these DVD's.The characters are engaging and the dialogue is hilarious.Jeremy Piven is a stand-out as he absolutely chews up and spits out every scene in which he appears.I hope that Season 2 is more than 8 episodes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Funny, Raunchy Show
I really loved "Strangers with Candy" and was sad when it was cancelled prematurely. The series ran for 30 some episodes, and the first 10 episodes (season 1) are included on this 2 DVD set. "Strangers" stars Amy Sedaris (sister of auther David Sedaris), Steven Colbert (seen on the "Daily Show"), and Paul Dinello. These three worked together for years (e.g., "Exit 57") before creating this series.

Amy Sedaris plays Jerri Blank, a 46-year-old loser who returns to high school after being a teenaged runaway for 32 years. Her father is immobile, and her step-mother and half-brother hate her. The series is patterned after an after-school episode, and each one ends in Jerri learning a "lesson" (as well as participating in funky dance sequences!). The humor is sometimes bizzare, often raunchy, and always politically incorrect!

Episode 1: Old Habits, New Beginnings. Jerri tries to fit in by mixing up some drugs (glint) for a popular cheerleader (Poppy), with tragic results. Jerri loses the first in a long series of pets and does her first "I got something to say!" bit.

Episode 2: A Burden's Burden. Jerri is given a 10-pound baby (whom she dubs "Dizzy") by her health teacher. She fails miserably and is paired up with Tammi Littlenut to complete the assignment. Teacher Noblet and Jellineck begin their unusual "relationship." This episode is hilarious and presents a new, more demented side of Jerri.

Episode 3: Dreams on the Rocks. Jerri get a leading role in the school production of "A Raisin in the Sun," beating out several African-American students! This acting success leads Jerri's step-mother on a "hilarious" alcolohic bender.

Episode 4: Who wants cake? Jerri is asked to determine whether her lockermate, Kimberly, is "[mentally challenged]." If she doesn't cooperate, she'll miss the school trip to Good Time Island.

Episode 5: Bogie Nights. Jerri falls for the new kid in school (Ricky, played by Chip from "Kate & Ally"), much to the consternation of her fellow students.

Episode 6: Jerri Is Only Skin Deep. Jerri runs for Homecoming Queen. She tries to increase her "inner beauty" by doing volunteer work, with tragic results for a chicken.

Episode 7: Let Freedom Ring. Jerri is suspected of writing a racial slur on a school wall, and she tries to seduce a student who supposedly witnessed the event. Jerri famously asserts that she likes the "pole and the hole."

Episode 8: Feather in the Storm: Jerri wants to try out for the debate team, but everyone tells her that she's too fat, leading her to develop an eating disorder.

Episode 9: To Be Young, Gifted and Blank. Mr. Noblet tries to turn Jerri into a violin prodigy, driving a wedge between himself and Mr. Jellineck.

Episode 10: The Trip Back. Jerri becomes attracted to a young female stoner and begins doing pot.

Extras: Sedaris, Colbert, and Dinello do audio commentary for four episodes. They are hilarious together, and the commentaries help shed some light on their bizarre senses of humor.

The original, unaired pilot is also included. The plot is similar to the "Who Wants Cake?" episode, but there are quite a few differences. Notably, Jerri has a volunteer job at a genertonology rehab center and Dinello and Colbert have dual roles. The pilot is not as good as the later episodes, but it's interesting to see how the series evolved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blank YOU!!!
Comedy Central's cult classic has finally made its way to dvd, something I pictured never happening. After being cancelled, with only three seasons to its credit, I was afraid that "Strangers With Candy" might fade into obscurity. Luckily, there were lots of fans out there who, like me, found it's dark, insane humor riotously funny. This dvd offering gives us the first 10 episodes, introducing us to Jerri Blank, a 46 yr old ex con, ex prostitute, ex drug user---ex you-name-it! as she struggles while returning to high school where she left off after running away 32 years ago. As a freshman, Jerri must deal with trying to fit in, wanting to make friends, be popular---all the things a typical freshman wants in school. Told in the format of the old afterschool specials that warned us of drugs, unwanted pregnancy, etc., this series worked brilliantly. Thanks mostly, of course, to Amy Sedaris who plays Jerri Blank to perfection. Add in Stephen Colbert and Paul Dinello as teachers (and closeted lovers) and an array of other characters and the show always hits the mark. I love the relationship between Jerri and her step mother played by Deborah Rush, who plays this role to a tee. The dvd offers a few extras such as running commentary during episodes and a bonus unaired pilot. It was interesting watching this pilot, seeing how that changed Jerri and some of the situations she was in for the actual series. If you are a fan of this show, this dvd is a MUST!!! I've read that if this dvd sells well, the other two seasons will be released as well. I hope that is true because there were so many classic moments in seasons 2 and 3. Go out and buy this dvd now---run, don't walk! You won't regret it.

3-0 out of 5 stars FUNNY!
I loved this comedy series. They should make as many seasons as possible. The actress that plays the main character is so funny, she should do stand up. LOVE THIS. ACTING AND WRITING ARE TOP NOTCH!

4-0 out of 5 stars Forget Chappelle's Show, this beats it any day.
Strangers With Candy: one of the most offensive shows I've ever seen...and I love every bit of it. From "pin the tail on the retard" to the school's principal: Mr. Blackman (who just happens to be black), there wasn't a minute that I wasn't laughing while watching this set of episodes. I'm sure you know what the show's about by now: Jerri Blank, a 46 year old high school freshman. Her dad is stuck in one position every time he's shown, and seemingly never talks. Her mom couldn't care less about her, and her brother is a total frumpy jock loser. This family is hilarious, and it's a shame the show's ended after just 3 seasons. They're even more messed up than the Bundy's in Married With Children.

In the first episode, Jerri makes drugs for a girl just to gain popularity after nobody is interested in coming to her party. She ends up overdosing, and trying to cram herself head-first through a key hole. During her funeral at the school, when Principal Blackman is going on about how the culprit that gave her the drugs must be feeling horrible, Jerri stands up and screams, "I'VE GOT SOMETHING TO SAY". Her message...is that she's throwing a party at her house for the girl. So Jerri finally gains temporary popularity in the end. In another episode, the drama class gets to do a play of Raisin in the Sun, which is a book/play about black people. Well, the first two people that get parts are Susan Cream and Craig Snow. Then, beating out someone perfect for the lead role, is Jerri. All the other students (and again, they're all black) get to play trees. I swear, I laughed at that one bit for at least 10 minutes. And it only took about 2 minutes to do that scene.

As you can see, the producers show no mercy, and everything is a target. Even "violent kids" are thrown in, left in padded rooms (the commentary about that episode is very strange). And yes, even babies show up. Jerri has to take care of a 10 pound baby for health class in order to learn a lesson. She ends up getting sick of him, and leaving it in the park in order to go "throw rocks at the Indian". It'll make sense once you watch the show. If you've seen the movie Bubble Boy, take that and make it 1.5 times worse as far as offending things go and that's what you get here with Strangers With Candy.

The only reason I'm not giving this dvd 5 stars (though it deserves it for how great the show is) is because of the lack of special features. We get 4 commentary tracks and then 2 Comedy Central shorts of South Park and Crank Yankers. That's it. The commentary tracks are ok, but there are too many long periods of silence. And the stars (Amy, Stephen and Paul) more or less just watch the show with you and laugh at things as it goes along. They had fun though, which was cool. They mention how the school the show was shot in was a real school that was going to be torn down, and they could do whatever they want with it. One room had padding on the walls, and nothing else, which was very strange. I would've loved to have seen some interviews with the cast (especially the dad) and what they thought when they first read the scripts. The audio quality isn't that great either...it's just barely better than how it was shown on tv.

I'm still glad I picked this up though. After seeing these 10 episodes, I can only imagine what they make fun of in the second and third seasons. If you like South Park's sense of humor, this is perfect for you. And at this price, you have no reason not to buy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars arguably the best season of this short-lived series
this is black comedy at its greatest. the first disc of this second season DVD collection houses, quite possibly, the most creative, hysterical episodes of the entire series. "yes you can't", "the blank page", "the goodbye guy", and "the virgin jerri" are my personal favorites. the only weak episode on in this collection is "a price higher than riches," although that episode still manages to be ruthlessly hilarious (as a shoe salesman, jerry asks a man in a wheel-chair "how he wore the last pair out")

in an age where the vast majority of non-sitcom comedy shows are parody humor (i.e. SNL, MadTV) it's a breathe of fresh air to see something so inventive, creative, and politically incorrect; the central theme to this show is the satiring of the "after-school special" mentality; where in the end, the protagonist discovers some new enlightening, cathartic revelation about life and everything is okay again, but it's much more complex than that. the writers toss in some of the most bizarre dialogue, often laced with double negatives and contradictions (such as "must be great to hope for the things you wish you wanted", etc ...)

all in all, this show is certainly not for everyone. as amy sedaris (jerri blank) said herself in an interview: "I'm glad everyone doesn't like it, that would mean i was doing something wrong." amen.

4-0 out of 5 stars One star shies from perfect.
Strangers With Candy is one of my favorite show on air. I have no idea why Comedy Central stopped the show regardless comments and requests posted by angry fans on the website.
Anyway, previous reviews already reveal how good the show is. No need to address on that issue. One thing that I couldn't agree more is the about the DVD distributor. Like one of the previous previews points out that the distributor did poor job on making of the DVD. No special features, no subtitles, no delete scenes and no add-in values. Compare to those bootlegs DVDs sell on eBay, the only difference is one is legal and the other is not.
The season one I just sold is because that. And those poor executions downgrade the marvelous title from a collection to a common DVD. Hate to give an outstanding product 4 star preview. But those who made the DVD really ruined the value of it.
Enjoy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars FANDANGO?
This DVD had me in tears laughing! This is a hill-air-ee-us program!! If your a fan of subversive humor, you will not be able to stop watching this!!! Cant wait for season 3.

5-0 out of 5 stars Television classic
Thats right,A CLASSIC!I just loved the Strangers with Candy tv show and I own both season 1 and 2 on DVD.All that's left to say is,BRING ON SEASON THREE ON DVD!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bring on Season Three
This show is brilliant. It is a delightful twist on the heavy-handed ABC After School Specials of the 70's. The writers and actors perfectly capture the essence of the old programs, while skewering the "very special" issues at the same time.

The concept of a 46 year-old high school freshman, on its own, is hillarious. The execution in this delightful program, is outstanding.

I'm waiting (not so patiently) for season three.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, odd, and wonderful
I remember a friend talking to me about this weird little show on Comedy Central. These sketches, involving a man wielding a poo stick, another person claiming to have the title line in Star Wars, and man forced to make "mini-movies" wearing a catsuit and delivering balloons. It sounded bizarre, but I trust this friends opinon, so I watched the show and fell in love. I missed most of the episodes on their cable run, and saw little to nothing of the first or second season. But it still remained one of my favorite sketch comedies ever.

So when I heard that the first season was available on DVD I snatched up fast. An excellent DVD with commentary from the UCB, deleted scenes, the unaired pilot, and more. I finally got to see those episode I never saw (including the excellent Saigon Suicide Squad). I hope enough folks buy it so that seasons 2 & 3 are released.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOLFMAN JACK SAYS UCB IS AT THE FRONT DOOR BABY!!
UCB was the best sketch comedy show to ever be on television!! Its bizarre and off-the-wall humor is guaranteed to satisfy! This is a great DVD to get, even if you've seen all the episodes the special features are dreadfully funny and definitely worth it. The commentaries especially are hilarious, which features all the four actors from the show recently talking about the best episodes from the season. Season 1 personally is my favorite of the three seasons they were on comedy central. So many great episodes like "Bucket of Truth", "Poo Stick", "Time Machine", "Cyborgs", "Lady of the Lake", "Little Donnie Foundation" and many more. Plus, they swear!! I stole my copy of season one from the store, but it was ok, my sheet has a hole in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars How did I miss this??
I saw an episode of this show last week during a marathon on Comedy Central - it was the first time I had ever watched the show. HOW DID I MISS IT?? This show is excellent - for me to mention it in the same breath as "Mr. Show" and "The State" is pretty indicative of how funny it is.

Random, arbitrary, but intelligent humor appeal to you? This is perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it entirely
I can remember when Comedy Central was called HA network. I've seen brilliance slip through so many cracks like a plummbers convention. This show should be beamed into deep space to baffle alien races. Now run and open your front door and scream for no reason.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best show ever.
This DVD is so hilarious. I've been waiting so long for them to put this show out on DVD. The shows are great, the commentary is even better! This show makes me laugh harder and longer than any other show in the history of time. I've watched every episode on this DVD many times and it never gets old. You and your friends will pick up enough catch-phrases to last a life-time.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite all-around season
Better than good, it's gooder. Thats right, SWC Season 3 is probably the best season of this sadly short-lived cult classic show. Each character fully comes into his own. The episodes are:
1. Jerri's Burning Issue
2. Is Freedom Free?
3. Trail of Tears-Will Ferrell guest stars, Andy Richter
4. Invisible Love
5. Is My Daddy Crazy-Stu at his best
6. Steroid Relay-Andy Richter
7. Ask Jerri- My favorite from this season b/c of Noblet and Jellineck, but really all episodes are great
8. Sexual Harassment
9. Bully
10. The Last Temptation of Blank-Winona Ryder guest stars

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD
The Beastie Boys Video Anthology offers so much, I have had it for 3 weeks now and I feel I have only begun to scratch at the surface of all of the angles, remixes , extras, photos, commentary etc. If you are a Beastie Boys fan and you have a DVD player, this is a must have, if you are a Beastie Boys fan and you dont have a DVD player, go out and get a DVD player for this. The Anthology is very well put together featuring 18 different videos, ranging from early work (Holy Snappers from their Polly Wog Stew days) all the way to their most recent work (Hello Nasty and Alive) videos. Each video contains extras in some form. The "Alive" video alone has 9 angles and 7 different audio tracks. The DVD also contains short films they have made (CIAO LA and Octopus VS Robot), live versions of songs (Shadrach and Graditude), commentary from the band and from the directors, and directors notes, storyboards, photos, and album covers. This is a very well put together DVD and you have to check it out even if your not a Beastie Boys fan. One of the top DVD's of the year

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate rap/comedy DVD
I bought "License to Ill" when it came out some 15 years ago and I knew then that this band would change the music world forever. This DVD is so cool I cannot even begin to express my feelings for it. You get two discs each containing 9 Beastie songs and videos. The cool part is that each video has changable camera angles and re-mixed audio that you can change ON THE FLY as you watch. The experience is totally customizable. There are literally 30 different versions of "Intergalactic" with all the re-mixes and video options. Also the origional videos (sans re-mixed audio or video) can be played back to back making this a great party DVD. Oh, did I mention that these guys are funny as hell? One of the extras on "Sabotage" is a halarious interview with the cast of the video.

I have but two complaints. I wish that the re-mixed videos could be played back to back. Also I wish that the videos could be played in a random order. Those are my only gripes.

If you are a fan of the B Boys BUY THIS DVD. If you are not a fan BUY IT ANYWAYS. I feel like throwing a party now just to throw this on the big TV and pump it through the surround sound!

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice to have the videos available, but extravagent
Their music is great, the videos aren't the most amazing thing I've ever seen. I listen to the b-boys quite a bit, but I don't find a video dvd to have much replay value.

5-0 out of 5 stars No words, just unintelligible drooling.
Oh my. This is a brilliant DVD. First of all, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that the Beasties make some seriously awesome music videos. Case in point: my brothers are not B-boy fans, but they worship at the altar of Sabotage every time it plays. So compiling the videos (minus those during the Def Jam days) by itself is a fantastic idea. Then, there's the countless different camera angles, often several per video. The stills. The commentaries from directors and the Boys themselves. (Even though theirs don't bring much new knowledge to light. Whatever, even as kickback as their commentary is, it works.) The different remixes. Again, often several per song. The extra clips like the interview with the cast of Sabotage (my sides hurt after that one) and the Intergalactic short. This DVD is so jammed with goodies that you won't want to leave your house. Ever. Okay, for at least a very long time. Bonus points for making everything clear and concise, the instruction manual, and the kick ass Sabotage poster that now resides on my ceiling.

5-0 out of 5 stars a DVD taking full advantage of what DVD's can do !!
This release by the Criterion Collection is one of the most impressive DVD's in terms of special features and versatility that I have seen. This double disc set covers the music videos by the band, The Beastie Boys.

It covers 18 of their songs and the special features make up 95% of the content. Many of the songs contain lyrics not suitable for children and some teens, though some of the songs have the profanity bleeped.

The songs featured are Intergalactic, Shake Your Rump, Gratitude, Something's Got to Give, Sure Shot, Hey Ladies, Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun, Body Movin', So What'Cha Want, Sabotage, Shadrach, Three MCs and One DJ, Ricky's Theme, Pass the Mic, Holy Snappers, Root Down, Netty's Girl and Alive.

Of these my favorites are Intergalctic, and Shadrach.

For bonus features we have two audio commentaries of each video. One by the band and one by the directors. There are also alternate audio tracks of remixes of many of the songs interchangable with seperate video angles making hundreds of possible combinations. There is also slide shows of album art and pictures of video production and storyboarding.

I watched each individual angle and listened to each individual remix but did not do each possible combination as this would have probably taken a VERY long time.

Hardcore Beastie Boys fans though, will love to do this. Many of the videos contain very impressive footage. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Now that the first season is out SKIP THIS Rip-Off!
The episode contained here is a very good one. And I can think of nothing bad to say about it. And the documentary is very good as well. But you get the SAME episode and the SAME documentary {no other extra's though} PLUS 22 more episodes with the first season set. If you can not afford the first season set this would be better than nothing. But if you can afford it, avoide this and buy the first season. Had I known the first season DVD's were comming 5 months ago I WOULD HAVE!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Real fans should boycott these piecemeal releases
This is typical of a bad DVD release. It looks like a crude attempt to extract as much revenue as possible from large base of loyal fans. Some reviewers who wax lyrical over the 'special' interview features and "insight into the show" in this single episode DVD either work for the publisher or miss the point that any of these items could have been included in a 'full season' release. This piecemeal approach is frustrating for real fans of the series who, to date, have seen only one complete season released. I for one will protest with my wallet. It stays shut until the complete seasons are released.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOCI Shall Rule The Universe!
A lot of people have been complaining about why would you buy just one episode of any particular show. Well let me tell you why. The interviews on this DVD allow insight into the show and let you better understand issues that come up in virtually every episode. You get to know the actors and their characters on a deceptively personal level. If you are a hard-core fan, then you need this DVD. Stop complaining that it is just one episode, because really, it's a lot more than that. It took me inside "Law and Order: Criminal Intent," and that's one place I've always wanted to go!

5-0 out of 5 stars Boxed set due in October
Several reviewers have wanted to know why the boxed set was not released.

This one episode DVD was meant as a teaser to wet the appatite for the boxed set due in October.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential purchase for all Vincent D'Onofrio fans
I realize that $20 seems like a lot to spend for a single LOCI episode that you probably already have on tape. But there are two reasons why you should buy this DVD today. First, the interview featurette is a rare opportunity to see D'Onofrio out of character and hear him talking as himself. We also get interesting trivia and fun behind-the-scenes details from Dick Wolf, Rene Balcer, Kathryn Erbe, Courtney Vance, and Jamey Sheridan. Second, the best way to get the LOCI first and second year box sets released fast is to show the depth of the fan base by buying this item. It's a cherry on top bonus to get the original L&O pilot, which is very rarely shown on TV. V-sisters and Gorenistas (and you know who you are), you need this in your collection. Trust me! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I must say that I bought this movie only because Deborah Harry was in it. I was completelly blown away by her performance. She is an ICON and she knows it. You almost will not recognize her in this role. The directing was tight, story was excellent, acting was super. The ending is MORE than disturbing. There is one scene with Deborah that makes the film worth it's price, it involves Deborah doing a campy version of Andrea True Connection's "More More More". Just buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect movie
I have never been more shocked and delighted by one movie. "Six ways" is simply a perfect movie, the acting is great, the plot, the action, and the way the movie just flows. Debbie Harry and Norman Reedus make a perfect mother/son duo and their dialogue is scary yet entertaining. The movie borrows aspects from such classics as "Psycho" and "Goodfellas" but is original enough to be a classic on its own. This movie has everything that you could possibly want from a movie: violence, freaky sex, and great performances. If you haven't seen it you don't know what you're in for when you do!

4-0 out of 5 stars A thriller that's smart, funny...and charming!
Charming may be an odd word to use to describe a thriller, but it fits in this case. This is a completely unique entry in the thriller category, effortlessly fusing the Jewish mob, Youngstown Ohio, and a mama's boy. Yes, a decidedly odd combination, but it works exceptionally well, thanks to intelligent writing and fine acting.

Harry Odum lives with his mother who dotes on him beyond the point of normalcy. Hence, Harry is seriously conflicted about the opposite sex and, as well, easily provoked into bouts of raging violence. This last quality proves to be an asset as a Jewish mob underling, Abie Pinkwise, hears of Harry's gifts which have been applied, quite diligently, to a strip club owner.

Harry's quickly recruited as muscle for Louis Varga who, in spite of his last name, is Jewish to the point of reveling in a typical meal--gefilte fish ("Jewish hamburger" he calls it), horseradish, matzoh, and the works--which he invites Harry, a goy (non-Jew), to participate in along with Louis' crew, all members of the tribe. Harry's good at his job--waxing (perhaps the Youngstown Ohio Jewish mob version of "whacking")--and so is soon rolling in dough, enough to buy a new house for him and his Mom.

As Mrs. Odum, Debbie Harry is spot on. She's an excellent actress given the right parts, and this is definitely one of the best parts she's done in a film. The Oedipal attachment she forces on Harry is so strong that near the end of the film, the inevitable happens (you can guess what that is), resulting in tragedy that nevertheless produces a malicious grin. This strong black comedy component of the film, then, is like fusing Bruce Jay Friedman's "A Mother's Kisses" or Dan Greenburg's "How to Be a Jewish Mother" with the Godfather. Except Harry himself is not Jewish, even though his mother is a Jewish mother to the max.

Harry meets Iris, a Hungarian emigre girl who eventually captures his confused heart. Elina Lowinsohn is perfect in this role, as is Isaac Hayes as a corrupt cop (a lotta self-respecting crime films have one of these, right?), Adrien Brody as a wanna-be gangster who emulates urban culture to the point of near-ridiculousness, and Norman Reedus as our hero Harry. The nicely juxtaposed opposites of deep down innocence (in Harry) and vicious brutality work well when combined with Iris' radiant simplicity, generating the charming element of the film.

A constantly broken chair and Mrs. Odum's other homey quirks supplies much of the humor here, but there is some grim stuff too. This is a quirky film that never really got its due and should be seen by many more people.

Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Twisted and Innovative Inversion of the word "love"
Norman Reedus has to be perhaps one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. From starring roles in the Boondock Saints and minor roles in films like 8mm, he came into his own with this film. Adrien Brody as a wannabe gangster, obviously before playing Vladyslaw and Isaac Hayes in a great cameo...you are shown a twisted tale of mother/son bonding and a blossoming relationship between two young adults with a commonality in their desire for one another. Plenty of violence to consume that crowd...a dark comedy at its finest.

3-0 out of 5 stars jaw dropping
i hadn't seen this movie before when i decided to buy it, but adrien brody was in it and i've enjoyed all the movies i've seen with him. i have to say his acting in this was so convincing i had to laugh because his character reminded me of someone i knew. i couldn't even reconize adrien's personality while he played this strange character. the reason i only gave it three stars was because it was unneccessarily vivid in its violence and the plot didn't need to be that disguisting, especially the end. it seemed like the writer and director were trying too hard to get a rise out of people. i give adrien's performance five stars, but the movie just leaves you upset with the disturbing ending. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Funny, but stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid,stupid...but funny
Julia Sweeny, Dave Foley, Charles Rocket, Kathy Griffin and Tim Meadows. A great cast! But I was disapointed to be truthful. I love SNL movies, but this was probably the worst. Pat was funny...in some parts. But the hour and eighteen minutes that this movie last...it lags on. They could of made this a thirty minute short TV thing. I was disapointed to see Dave Foley in drag...again. I was glad to see Tim Meadows with a small role, he needs to get off of SNL and move on with his career or just find something else to do. Kathy Griffin was horrible, I just wanted her to go away. All in all, it was the stupidest movie I ever saw...but it was still pretty funny. Here's an example of SNL skits that shouldn't become movies...wink wink, nudge, nudge...night at the Roxbury?

5-0 out of 5 stars How about an "It's Chris"!
What a classic movie. I cannot believe this got negative reviews when it came out. The skits on SNL were great and the movie is one of the best comedies I have ever seen. I am so glad it finally came out on DVD. I love how just when you're about to find out what Pat is, there is always SOMETHING to get in the way. For example, in this movie we see Pat's drivers liscense, but a dog just happened to chew it up and one of the bite marks is dirrectly over the "sex" identification. I also love how conceited Pat is, when *it's* really the ugliest character I've ever seen.

Personally, I think Pat is the guy and Chris is the girl because of all the feminine clothes Chris wears. Also notice how Chris's hair changes length during the movie. I'd love to see a sequel, or a movie dedicated to Chris, but I don't think that would ever happen. Unfortunately. Hopefully there will be an SNL Best of Julia Sweeney DVD (amoung the others they have) and will include many of the Pat sketches.

Great movie. I can watch it over and over and never get bored.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst SNL movie ever!
My god stay away from this film it's terrible. It's not even funny from the sketch that I watch off SNL. It's only 76 minutes long! There are only a few parts that can be funny but the rest of the movie is just stupid. If you want to watch a better SNL movie go watch Wayne's World and Night at the Roxbury the rest of the SNL movies are dumb just like with the retarded movie Coneheads.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty funny
Androgyns are funny, just face it. Pat gets into all sorts of trouble but the creepy stalking neighbor steals the show. Love when he keeps trying to crack her password and the laptop goes "access denied...uhehehehe"

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst movies ever made
On Saturday Night Live, the "It's Pat" skits were always funny. The movie, however, was not. Yes, it is a very bad idea to take a few minute sketch and try to stretch the joke into a 90 minute movie. While it's is not a great movie it is pretty funny at times. Especially the neighbor who becomes so very psycho obsessive in trying to discover Pat's gender. ... Read more

The wit and whimsy of John Linnell and John Flansburgh, collectively known as They Might Be Giants, is on display in this thoroughly entertaining video compilation. Twelve of the group's videos (dating from the mid-'80s to 1998) are here, filled with all manner of craziness and looking and sounding great. But the real prize may be the two clips from Tiny Toon Adventures, marrying TMBG's silly but also smart and clever music with the cartoon series' riotous animation; the twin Giants actually didn't write "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)," a "Puttin' On the Ritz" soundalike that's also one of the 12 main videos (with different animation), but it fits their style to a T. All of this quirkiness and freneticism can get a bit wearying after a while, but in small doses it's lots of fun. DVD extras include Linnell and Flansburgh's straightforward, informative audio commentary; there are also bonus audio tracks, a live video, and more. --Sam Graham ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent DVD for an excellent band. Just a few problems.
Well, I was very excited when Direct From Brooklyn was released on VHS, but I did not purchase it knowing the DVD would eventually come out. And it did. A few years after the VHS, but who cares. The DVD is overall great, animated menus (in a way), extras, and of course, John Linnell and John Flansburgh.
OK, now the special features. All the official videos are there except Boss Of Me, the Malcom In The Middle theme song. Which was a great video, but it's a minor loss. Again, it has all of the videos plus the two Tiny Toon Adventures videos ("Particle Man" and "Istanbul"), and a new live video of "Why Does The Sun Shine?" from a 2002 tour. Each video's audio track is in Dolby Pro Logic Surround, which is old technology. Also, every video, including the bonus videos have commentary from the two John's in the background. Plus, there are three bonus unreleased songs that are audio-only tracks, a trailer for the TMBG independent film, "Gigantic," and three DVD-ROM only home videos of their songs, recorded by John Linell. I did find a lot of technical problems with the DVD, though. A few of the videos are low quality, and all of them are grainy, a few don't have commentary when you go to the commentary tracks, and some selections on the menu don't do what they are supposed to. For example, pressing "Play All" on the main menu only plays Doctor Worm, and brings you back to the main menu. Plus, during some videos, the screen flickers black a few times. That's about it.
Well, that's my review of this DVD. Overall, I think it still deserves five stars because of how great the band is, and all of the songs on here. Just ignore a few problems, and you have a perfect DVD. Well, almost perfect, anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oh, how paltry MTV looks now!
Jonathan, you might want to check your DVD player, because I had none of the problems you had -- "Play All" DOES play all, and all of the videos have commentary. A few of the older videos are grainy, but I suspect that's more due to the source material, and I doubt they'd go to the trouble of professionally touching up and restoring them.

I don't know why they bothered to put the Quicktime "home movies" on the disc. I thought it was odd that they didn't make them available as regular DVD "special features" videos, but then I found out -- they're VERY low quality, and they're only about a minute each -- just snippets of the songs. There could have been much more in the way of extras, but, fortunately, there's a treasure trove of extras available on the _Gigantic_ DVD, and the ones that are included here -- the "Tiny Toons" clips, the "fiery" live performance, and the audio tracks -- are not on the _Gigantic_ disc. Plus, the "commentary" for the "Snail Shell" video is actually another song! Overall, this is a great video collection for TMBG fans. (By the way, I'm sure that the reason "Boss of Me" is not included is that it's owned by Fox, so perhaps they couldn't get the rights to it, or didn't think it was worth it, or maybe they're saving it for the next collection...)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great collection but...
The collection is great but on the John & John commentary, John Linnell is extremely hard to hear which is extremely dissapointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Videos are fun, Commentary is Priceless!
This DVD is definitely a must-have for any TMBG Fan. The video commentary is absolutely hilarious! Other extras include a few audio-only songs, and a live video of "Why Does the Sun Shine?".

There's not much more to say. It's just classic TMBG fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Super for TMBG Fans
What a great DVD of TMBG's greatest songs! It includes their original videos, of course, along with their commentary. Overall, I was very happy with this. It'll keep those TMBG tunes going in your head hours after viewing it. A must for TMBG fans. ... Read more

this is the greatest show ever!if you haven't seen it, you're really missing out.PLEASE enter your email address so maybe it will be released!!my vhs copies taped off tv are starting to wear out so PLEASE RELEASE THE DVD SOON!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This unparalleled TV comedy should be on DVD by now !!!
So I'm reviewing a DVD that doesn't exist (yet). The main reason I'm writing anything at all is to urge anyone who stumbles upon this to enter your email address above, requesting to be informed by Amazon should this title ever actually make it to DVD. There's no obligation to buy, but entering your email address will count as a vote toward convincing the studio to release this incredibly clever, outrageously funny and stingingly accurate TV show from 1999 (Fox). The 13 half-hour episodes, plus a few bonus features, would fit nicely on 2 discs. Starring Jay Mohr and an outstanding ensemble cast, plus some big Hollywood names playing, and satirizing, themselves, it's as good as any TV comedy I've ever seen. I've been a huge fan of The Honeymooners, Barney Miller, Taxi, Cheers, Bosom Buddies, Seinfeld, Friends, Sports Night, Arrested Development, Scrubs and, recently, The Office (the Steve Carell version - haven't caught the British original yet). If your TV comedy tastes are even remotely close to mine, you will absolutely love Action. ... Read more
