It may have been underrated when first broadcast on PBS on consecutive nights in the fall of '03, but executive producer Martin Scorsese's homage to the blues is a truly significant, if imperfect, achievement. "Musical journey" is an apt description, as Scorsese and the six other directors responsible for the seven approximately 90-minute films follow the blues--the foundation of jazz, soul, R&B, and rock & roll--from its African roots to its Mississippi Delta origins, up the river to Memphis and Chicago, then to New York, the United Kingdom, and beyond. Because the absence of lengthier vintage clips is the principal drawback of the series, Clint Eastwood's Piano Blues is the best of the lot; a musician himself, Eastwood simply lets the players play, which means we get extensive file footage of the likes of Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, and Nat "King" Cole, as well as new performances by Ray Charles, Dr. John, and others.--Sam Graham ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Great idea, but...
The idea - to promote awareness of the Negro League and what the players went through prior to baseball's integration - was a wonderful one. However, the writing and the acting make the story seem far less than real. The characters do not behave in any way as their real life counterparts would. While kids ages 7 - 12 will likely enjoy this after-school-special type of movie, adults will likely find it difficult to watch.

3-0 out of 5 stars UNRAVELING A MYSTERY
Jason is an adolescent filled with dreams. When cut from his team because of his lack of skills and offered a chance to play on another one, Jason goes all out to prove himself. The man who is the key to his dream is a Black janitor by the name of Mack Henry, who knows a few things about baseball.
Mack Henry is far more than a janitor. His knowledge of the game and stories about the Negro League opens up a new world for the young white boy. His obsession with the game leads him to find out about a player of the Negro Leagues called Buck McHenry. Are Buck and Mack the same person? Jason is convinced that they are and sets out to prove it.

This sentimental tale introduces us to the players of the Negro League and highlights the contributions of those men who never had the opportunity to play the majors. You learn about their hardships and dangers they faced. You will see why Buck disappeared after three years of playing never to be seen again.
What makes this picture interesting is the dynamics of a boy learning that it takes more than dreams to become a baseball player. It takes hard work. The video also shows how the media will invade a person's privacy for a good story regardless of the harm that it might cause. Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee star in this film as a couple who have loved one another for years but sorrow and a secret has entered their lives. Jason's curiousity brings shakes these things lose and Mack Henry's life will never be the same again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Gem
I liked this modest budget cop thriller movie very much. A great ensemble cast was assembled with well known and recognizable actors (including Ice Cube, Lori Petty, Michael Boatman, Michael Ironside, M. Emmett Walsh, Elliot Gould) for reportedly very little money. The production values are also top notch for a low budget film. The Director, Charles Burnett, a MacArthur "Genius" Grant award winner and the writer-director of the acclaimed "To Sleep With Anger", apparently attracted top talent and key crew people for this film.

Although there are no big, expensive stunts, there is plenty of suspense and drama. The film is supposed to be based upon true events and stories, making it more realistic and compelling.

I highly recommend this film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.
This movie was pretty good. I started watchin this movie with my friends and they said it was a LA CONFIDENTIAL ripoff. I think that it wasn't and i think it was awesome.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oldsmobile91, "The Glass Shield"
This movie was done very well, Michael Boatman, Lori Petty, Ice Cube all acted the way they should for there parts. But then you have mean Michael Ironside, who wants to put everyone through hell in the sheriff's department. I thought that Elliott Gould was the only wimp in this movie, he's the one who did not act real well in this film. But timely look at racism and corruption in the sheriff's department as seen through the eyes of African American rookie J.J. Johnson (Boatman). He realizes his own department is framing a black man (Ice Cube) for a murder he did not commit. Lori Petty who becomes Johnson's only ally on the force. "THIS IS A MUST SEE FILM" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good One to Show in School for MLK Day
"Selma, Lord, Selma" fills an important niche by telling a story of the Civil Rights Movement in a manner that is accessible to upper elementary students (and older). The characters and situations are believable, and the story is told from the perspecive of a young--almost 12 years old--African-American girl who got involved after writing a report on Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

While this film portrays the harshness of the situation, including two deaths, it is not graphic or gratutitous. I personally appreciated the way the non-violent Civil Rights movement of Rev. King and his followers was based on their Christian beliefs. The film is not preachy, but the religious context of the movement is realistically portrayed.

As the school librarian, I will be recommending this video to teachers in our elementary school as an option for the Martin Luther King holiday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Selma Lord Selma is the BEST!
All I have to say...is that Selma Lord Selma is the absolute best movie today! It is about Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement in the 60's. My teacher showed us this movie a couple of years ago. I love it! I recommend everyone goes out and buys it. It is a great video!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-see video on an important part of US history
This is a true story with true characters and events, not a fictionalized "this could have happened" history.
This is the story of the civil rights movement in 1965 Selma, Alabama. After the events shown in the video, Lyndon Johnson made the following speech -- one of his best:
"At times history and fate meet at a single time in a single place to shape a turning point in man's unending search for freedom. So it was at Lexington and Concord. So it was a century ago at Appomattox. So it was last week in Selma, Alabama.
"There, long-suffering men and women peacefully protested the denial of their rights as Americans. Many were brutally assaulted....
"There is no cause for pride in what has happened in Selma. There is no cause for self-satisfaction in the long denial of equal rights of millions of Americans. But there is cause for hope and for faith in our democracy in what is happening here tonight...." You may wish to find the entire speech and read it -- it's available on the internet.
This movie is appropriate for school use for 5th and 6th graders and up. "Selma, Lord, Selma" never fails to bring tears to my eyes. A good companion video is "Ruby Bridges."

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!!!!
I watched it last night, and i loved it. It really made me see the prejudice that goes on. It made me cry and be more thankful than i am

5-0 out of 5 stars Selma, Lord, Selma--- Great Movie
I had watched this movie in school during my history class, we were studying the civil rights movement. And I think that this movie did a great job showing and describing the event. I think that this movie is very inspirational, and it would make you will grateful for what you have. This movie is from the view of an African American little school girl who wanted to take part in the civil rights marches in her community. She was a very brave girl who was very determined to reach the goal of freedom. Other characters in the movie were also very great and very good with their role like the young Reverend in the movie named Jonathon. ... Read more
