Description

After 25 chart-topping hits, the singing star becomes a movie star!George Strait makes his film debut in an entertaining look into the heart and soul of country music from Young Guns director Christopher Cain.

Superstar Dusty Chandler (Strait) is tired of the smoke, the strobe lights and the overmiked sound of his arena spectaculars. One night, something snaps."I'm just going to take a little walk," Dusty says as he walks out of the empty hall, ditching his beard, ponytail - and temporarily, his career - to reclaim his down-home country roots. But his manager (Leslie Ann Warren) retaliates:a stand-in (Kyle Chandler) lip-synchs his songs in concert. And a romance with a lovely rancher (Isabel Glasser) is on again, off again like a rodeo cowboy. The simple life can be complex, but it's nothing a revitalized country boy can't handle! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best movie I ever seen!
Without a doubt one of the best movies to feature great country music in a true country atomosphere (not like Urban Cowboy or Rhinestone), is the movie Pure Country starring George Strait, Lesley Ann Warren, and Isabel Glasser. The plot centers around the career of a country music singer by the name of Dusty Chandler played by George who gets tired of performing shows that are too extravagent and look lik a forth of July celebration with fireworks, smoke, and music so lound that nobody can hear the words. Dusty's manager is the flirty Lula Rodgers played by Warren. When Dusty just takes a walk one night he ends up back in his old home town, one thing leads to another and the next thing you know he's romancing a beautiful young woman named Harley Tucker (Glasser) who is struggling to keep the family ranch out of the bank's hands. All the while Dusty tours goes on without him. Lula feeling that she has no other choice sends out a Dusty impersonator in the form of Buddy Jackson (Kyle Chandler), a member of the road crew who just happens to be her boyfriend. In the end Dusty gets his girl and he gives a great performance, just him and his guitar. The performance of "I Cross My Heart" is enough to make the anybody anybody wish that they could find a love this true. I get choked up every time and watch and I wish that it was me singing on that stage. At that point he is pretty much the luckiest person in the world. A great career and a great woman. The music this movie has to offer is, how can I say it, greater than any other movie ever made. There is something for every fan of country music, from heartbreak songs to love ballads to songs that you can't help but dance too. If you want to watch a movie that really makes you want to fall in love watch this one and if you like country music and you haven't seen this movie that plaease watch it, I beg of you. Buy the soundtrack too. To wrap this up buy the movie, rent it, do what you have to do. It's the best movie I ever seen and I can't stress that enough. The movie is clean so you can watch it with your kids, your girlfriend, your boyfriend, your spouse, watch it with anybody you want to. Trust me you'll be doing them a favor. Thank you very much and have a good 'un. END

4-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up! Country star Strait proves he can act too.
It's been a few years since I've seen this, but I remember it being enjoyable, a little bit of everything : comedy, drama, music. A somewhat predictable story line but overall well done....with some good country music to boot. I've always liked George Strait, and was pleasantly surprised by his seemingly effortless ability to act. He is completely at home in front of the camera, very natural. Leslie Anne Warren turns in a great supporting performance, too. One of her more memorable roles. If you like George Strait, you'll love this movie. If you're not a fan, you will be after you see this film!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
I'm not a fan of any of the people in this film except for one, the Lovely Lesley Ann Warren, I simply Adore her and originally saw this due to the fact that she was in it. I found the film a fun film, a good story with decent acting. It probably grabbed alot of female fans due to George Strait starring in it also. Thats ok, some stars pull in good crowds. Not a bad movie but not one of my favorites. I'd give it an "average" rating.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst Country Music Movie I ever seen !!!
The only good thing is the Music shows by George, his rol is ridicolous because the script is a totally ordinary and used once and again in others films.

The truht Actress Lesly Ann Warren is horribilis because since she is her carrere ending, has to do a rool without any resources to make his best as she peformed in "Official and Gentelman" and "Urban Cawboy".

I got this DVD in USA (Region 1) but being aware that no Spanis language was referenced as available doub in the audio.

But when I been back in Madrid (Spain) and play the DVD... Bingo! a ridicolous Spanis-Mexican Doubing start to sound....

So, In the most powerfull Nation of the heart where are living more Spanis speakers than in Spain and it is inside the American Continent discovered by Columbus and havin more than 300 Millions of people, the Movies Industry on DVD allways include French audio doubing and let the Spanis language audio doub be done by Mexicans and hide it on the features credits list on the DVD case rear side. PATETIC!!!!!!!!! :( :( :(

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Pure" Movie the Whole Family Will Enjoy!
With the large amount of smut, ultra-violence and graphic language in movies today, "Pure Country" is a breath of fresh air for anyone looking for a movie that is entertaining for young and old alike. The film, which debuts country superstar George Strait's acting ability, is a quality film with a fun story that takes a look at the world of country music from the singer's point of view.

George Strait plays Dusty Wyatt Chandler, a Garth Brooksesque superstar whose show has outgrown everyone's expectations, especially his own. While performing at a massive arena to a sold out show, he has an epiphany that the fans are so caught up in his hype, in the pyro-technics and the fireworks and all the flash and dance, that they fail to notice when Dusty stops singing for several seconds. Downed by the realization that people have forgotten his music, and angry with his manager, Lula Rogers (Lesley Ann Warren), after a disagreement about how his show should be performed, Dusty takes off, hitch-hiking his way back home to his small-town roots, leaving Lula, the band, and indeed, his entire entourage, scrambling to find him before their next show.

When he returns home, he re-discovers why he began on the musical journey that took him into the big time, and at the same time meets and falls for Harley Tucker (Isabel Glasser), a proud but struggling ranch owner whose ranch is in risk of going under.

The story takes the audience on a journey into America's heartland, where front porch philosophy, strong family values, and the need to return to your roots are the more important parts of a "pure country" life. Through the experiences that unfold in his time off, Dusty discovers that there he must be responsible to the people that depend on him, but he must be true to himself and his music as well.

With a "feel-good" ending that's sure to please, this movie is chock full of George Strait's music, including the hit "I Cross My Heart" which went on to become a number 1 hit for the singer after the movie's debut.

This is a great film for all ages, and a movie parents can feel comfortable watching with the kids. (NOTE: Minor "make out" scene near beginning of the film (nothing inappropriate, but as I am labelling this a "family" film, I want parents to be aware for younger audiences)).

In a time when the world seems to be reeling from a lack of values, this is a great film that really is "Pure Country", with a down-home feel good story for the whole family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bad history, good movie
Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, and Kiefer Sutherland are just a few of the all-star cast who fill out this film about outlaws set in the old west: The story of Billy the Kid & Co. Aside from the fact that its historical accuracy is more than highly questionable, the movie was more than entertaining.

Emilio Estevez plays William H. Bonney, a.k.a. Billy the Kid who was a runaway and an alleged murderer, who was taken in by Mr. John Tunstall, an English cattleman. Tunstall was murdered by a rival cattleman, a Mr. Murphy, played by Jack Palance. The movie goes on from there with a killing spree of those who were responsible for the death of Tunstall. The acting was great. "Dick," played by Charlie Sheen, was very good and one of Sheen's better roles. Lou Diamond Phillips was absolutely amazing as the Mexican Indian: Jose Chavez y Chavez. Charlie, played by Casey Siemasko, was a great and devoted friend, to Billy, and to the rest of the "Regulators."

It is said that Billy the Kid was no where near as arrogant, nor as trigger happy as the film portrays, but Estevez was rather impressive in his skills both as an actor and a gunslinger. Sutherland's "Josiah 'Doc' Scurlock" was an admirable man; full of character and class given the circumstances. Terrance Camp's role as "John Tunstall" was short-lived but excellent.

This movie is highly entertaining. I recommend it to anyone who likes a good Robin Hood story (who isn't terribly concerned of historical accuracy). It is fun to watch, and the cast is second to none.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone will hack on you if you do not buy this DVD
Young Guns is definitely one of the best Westerns ever made. It is the story of how Billy the Kid and his legend was created. John Tunstall an English merchant takes in runaways and those on a downward spiral in life and in return for protecting his ranch from poachers gives them (his regulators) an education and board. After he is murdered by L.G. Murphy's men, Tunstall's regulators are deputised and set out to bring in those responsible. The Lincoln War is on and William H. Bony and the other regulators have prices on their heads.

The Young Guns DVD also contains a featurette, which was made in 1988. It's kind of a behind the scenes, interview with the actors type thing. It's quite interesting and a flash back to 1988 with mentions of Tom's Cruise latest movie being Cocktail re-enforcing this was made in 1988. Seeing Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Keifer Sutherland and Lou Diamond Phillips over fifteen years younger than today and hearing them talk about their careers to that point is also rather interesting.

I don't really like Westerns but I loved Young Guns. Check out the sequel Young Guns II as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars an apology for a western that is not authentic
I always thought of this film as a western for young people. I don't understand the "brat pack" label. I could give some pretty friggin' nasty labels to some John Wayne films I've seen. And please don't tell me there's such a thing as a thinking man's western. Is Young Guns not a quality western since it lacks some vacuous, ponderous shots of deserts with a raspy-voiced squinty eyed god-fearing fat alcoholic moron squinting into the sun and speaking like a disgruntled janitor about how he's going to get his revenge on someone who done wronged him? I always though Young Guns was exciting and funny with a cast of youthfuls who make the 'mistake' of acting youthful in front of the screen. And as for Terrence Stamp? He's friggin' horrible! He gets blown off the screen literally and for which this viewer is eternally grateful. The only other actor miscast is Charlie Sheen. The rest of the cast is great. Jack Palance is comically unhinged as the true psychotic in this film. If John Wayne were in this film he would be a bearded bad guy who gets his brains blown out. And that's the way it should be. And one final word: why is it American films (particularly westerns) are always judged based on films that came before. In this case it doesn't make sense. Young Guns is influenced by some westerns, but in execution, tone, and style it is a complete original. It deserves mention with The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time In the West, My Darling Clementine, One-Eyed Jacks, Johnny Guitar, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and Tombstone as one of the great westerns. But if you're over 21 just go get hammered and watch TNT to get your weekly western fix you friggin' republican.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mindless Drivel of the Worst Kind
This is an utterly unhistorical movie. The real Billy the Kid was basically a loner who shunned gangs such as the "Regulators" bunch in this movie. One of the characters is a deputy marshal who throws away his badge and utters the usual lines about how the law is really on the side of evil. In this case, the ex-deputy joins the rest in a revelry of mindless violence all of which is committed in the name of a good cause, although it is hard to see how the violence did anything constructive.

Basically, this is just another empty action flick of mindless violence and mayhem with characters who have deluded themselves into thinking that they are the good guys. Worst of all, the movie basically portrays these juvenile delinquents as being on the right side. The idea that violence is an acceptable thing to engage in if you believe that you are in the right is just simply not the kind of message that Hollywood should be conveying to young people.

In summation, this is an awful movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mindless western fun - but a classic it ain't
Brash, loud, and totally rock and roll, "Young Guns" is less a classic western and more a typical late 80s, early 90s action flick. And that's just fine. It's a stupidly fun, turn-off-your-head flick if you're willing to approach it that way. Watch it as a serious western, though, and you're likely to be disappointed. This is an MTV western. No more, no less.

Emilio Estevez puts a lot of energy into Billy the Kid, keeping the movie brisk. The rest of the cast are all solid, playing their clichéd characters as well as can be expected.

Compared to today's rapid-fire action, "Young Guns'" blast em ups might seem lacking and tame, but it all works pretty well (for what it is). The style is all late-80s -- flashy, loud and rude. Big gun shots, rock and roll soundtrack, and car chases on horses. If that's your thing, "Young Guns" fits the bill. It's pure Bs to the wall action.

But take note: If what you want is a strong western that lives beyond the genre as a standout film, western or not, you'd be better off seeking "Once Upon A Time In The West" or "Unforgiven." This ain't it.

The DVD is of fine quality. The picture has never looked better, the audio is very impressive, and the packaging will look nice on your shelf. The extras are pretty good, too. A nice behind the scenes featurette, an excellent documentary on the real Billy The Kid, and a decent commentary make this a great bang-for-your-buck buy. You can't beat the price.

As a DVD set for Young Guns fans, this is a five-star set (*****). As a film, this is a three-star film (***). For Amazon.com, I'm splitting the difference with four stars (****) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not So Bad, Actually
All right. I know practically no one likes this movie, but . . . I don't think it was that terrible. I know some parts of it were almost forced (Sybok was really over-done, and Scotty/Uhura? Ack.), but I really loved the acting of the major characters, McCoy in particular (especially the scene with his father). William Shatner may not get the best praise from the classic Trek supporting cast, but I liked his directing job. Overall, I can't say the movie was spectacular, but it made me laugh a lot. And it was better than some of the other movies as well (::cough-cough:: Insurrection ::cough-cough::). I really don't see why people hate this film so much. I think that the quest for God was an admirable endeavor on Shatner's part, and though I can see why that would make some people uneasy, I think it turned out great. Taking into account the limited budget allotted to make Star Trek V, the film was better than what you'd expect it to be.

3-0 out of 5 stars Glad it was made into a movie
This was the last S.E. Hinton book to be made into a movie. Of course the book was better, but that goes without saying (for most films). Two very close teens, Mark, and Bryon live together with Bryon's mom. Mark's parents killed each other in a fight when Mark was a child. Bryon grows to maturity, and Mark wants to hold on to the good ol' days. Bryon gets a girlfriend and things look serious. Mark get's jealous and resentful. Mark turns to drug dealing, and deals some drugs to Bryon's girlfriend's brother, M&M. M&M loses his mind and is drugged out in a hippie type drug house. Things get heated between these two brothers, and Bryon is faced with a life changing decision. Good coming of age drama. Emilio Estevez wrote the screenplay to the Hinton book, but, unlike the other projects, she had nothing to do with the making of this movie. Morgan Freeman plays a very "cool" bartender in this movie.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Is Not A Star Trek Movie, Folks!!!!
I can't explain why the reviews for Star Trek keep coming up, but this a movie based on an S.E. Hinton novel. A very good novel that I'm afraid wasn't adapted well to the big screen. The parts of the book that were followed were good, but there was entirely way too much foul language that was NOT in the novel, plus I was disappointed that the music and setting were strictly 80's. The book took place in late 60's early 70's. If you've never read the novel, you'll be mislead. If you've read the novel???? Well, Emilio Estevez is in it. That helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is Amazon Screwey?
Since when does Star Trek Reviews end up on a review page for "That Was Then... This Is Now" staring Emeilio Estevez, Craig Schaifer, and Kim Delany? I Think Amazon.com has finally gotten to big to manage their own content!!!

However, this movie is one of the best movies that Emelio Estevez has acted in. We all know that [Estevez] had better rolls and was a more passionate actor during the earlier part of his career, that [this movie] demonstrates his acting ability.

The story is simple: two boys grow up together and feel like they are brothers. One of the boys [Estevez] gets caught up in the wrong crowd and ends up in jail. The other boy played by Schaifer tries to help [Estevez] stay on the straight and narrow.

Good story by the auther of the "The Outsiders", S.E. Hinton.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is an under-rated film. Better then all the TNG movies
Given the very cheap look and budgets that the Rick berman Star Trek movies have had, it's amazing that Paramount has not already pulled the plug on the freature movies when it seems that they have still so much to tell. The era of the TOS movies have seen the fair share of comparsions to how Harve Bennet, Ralph Winter, Nick Meyer, and the various production teams that they worked with, starting with Star Trek III and continueing to Star Trek VI, how they approached each movie and how they pulled it off given the budgets and time that they were allowed for. These new special DVDs have been very informative in how the movies were made, and showed what happened with they were treated as films (and not big budget TV episodes that Berman has foolishly done). Case in point is Star Trek V. An actually pretty good movie that made some valid points about friendship and loyality. In that way, it had more substance to it then most other big budget sci-fi movies had to offer (or not.) This movie was certainly better then Generations, First Contact, and Inserection. And I still stand by that. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Julie Garwood--Yes! Rosehill--Heck No!
I have read all of the reviews as well as ALL of Julie Garwood's novels. I have always admired her wit, humor and storytelling ability. With this in mind, I was VERY disapointed with "Rosehill". I did not expect that the movie would be a word-for word account and would have no flavor of its own. There have been plenty of movies I have enjoyed based on books that took some literary liscense. However, this is not what Hallmark did. They took a great story that involved strong characters, an unusual family, a mysterious stranger and a lasting love story and made it into a different story entirely. The changes they made didn't make sense. Why kill Cole when he wasn't killed in the first place? There was already enough drama in the book. Why make Adam on his deathbed and married at he end of the movie when he was so adamant against getting married? Why spend five minutes putting the family together only to spend the next few hours doing everything in your power to pull them apart and succeeding? They weren't a family, they were a fluke of circumstances according to this movie. They stayed together for the "baby's" sake and nothing else. No, this is not what it was.

I understood why they changed the setting for MaryRose's father's home from being in England to being in New York. I did not understand the need to add a brother named "Harrison"--who by the way was the name of Mary Rose's husband in the book. I understood why they took out a lot of the middle scenes, background information and even why they left out Mama Rose. But, for the life of me, I can't tell you why they made the remaining two brothers leave to search for their own fortunes at the end of the movie when they had worked the ranch not only for Mary Rose, but also as the culmination of their own dreams as well. They needed that family as much as Mary Rose did.

I understood why they left out Adam's trial, but I can't tell you what "Fergus" was. I also cannot tell you why they killed of Cole, but they did. I can't tell you why they made Mary Rose fall for that low-down piece of slime, but she did. As if her brothers (in the book) would have ever let a man like that within two paces of her. It's like they looked at a great puzzle and just took two pieces out of it, put together a new puzzle and called the two puzzles the same. No way!

I know I sound like I am whining and I am telling you that there should be some things sacred in this world and when turning a book into a movie, you should stay true to the spirit of the book and the skeleton of the story. They didn't need to add the love scenes, but they should have told the love story. They didn't even try and the entire effort came across as sloppy. To me, it is the same as taking a classic like "Pride and Prejudice" and killing of Mr. Darcy and making Elizabeth marry Mr. Wickam. You can do it, but don't sell it by saying it is based on the original classic. NOT THE SAME AT ALL.

Hallmark says that it wants to do a sequel and I am dreading that. However, there is a ray of hope. Julie Garwood is actually supposed to be writing on this one. If that holds true, I will be tuning in. However, a note to Hallmark before they take anymore creative liscense. KEEP TO THE OVERALL STORY PLEASE!

4-0 out of 5 stars Young Jennifer Garner as Pioneer Girl
I read and loved the Julie Garwood book, and did not expect the movie to live up to it. Good thing I prepared myself, because this adaptation is almost nothing like the book, except that it emphasizes the family relationship of Mary Rose and her unconditional brothers (which was my favorite part of the book anyway). I am a big Jennifer Garner fan as well, so I liked seeing her in something pre-Alias. I like this movie, but would not recommend it for fans of the book, as they will be disappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rose Hill
So sad, so bad! Readers Beware! I was vastly disapointed in this. I was hoping for that "Garwood magic" and ended up wanting to drop the video off my deck. They totally revamped a wonderful story to garbage. Yes, there was a MaryRose and 4 brothers that went west to Rose Hill and that's where they stop. There is a woman they bring along to cook that never exhisted, there was an indian woman ( I think these 2 were to take Crazy Corey's place). They add a cattle rustler for a love intrest. Cole dies. and there is this Irishman that also didn't exhist.Where Is Maryrose's husband? And MaryRose never goes off to school which is the big part of the story. Where is Mama Rose?? we never get a letter. She is a big part of the story. And Adam marries the Indian woman...Huh? Where'd the story go.. Please don't do a sequel. Take my advice catch it on the Hallmark channel instead of wasting money on this. They missed the stagecoach folks!

1-0 out of 5 stars awful awful awful
There was no SPUNK! "For the Roses" is one of my favorite books, and boy was I excited to find in my local video store. What a waste of 90 minutes. There was none of the charm, none of the humor (except for a couple of chuckles), and zero romance!! There was no frustration that came with the Elliot family, no drop dead gorgeous man to sweep Mary Rose off her feet, and couldn't they have found a better Mary Rose? Mary Rose with a short little guy like Fergus?? COME ON! And where was Adam's elegance, and Cole's heart, and Travis's sweetness, and Doug's maturity? As a movie, even without the book, it was terrible. It left alot out and wasn't much better than a summary of the book (an inaccurate summary at that).

I have never been more aggravated with a movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie!
This is a great, great movie! The actors did an excellent job and it was a good story about family and love. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars James Belushi should have gotten an oscar for this...
So then why do I only give 3 stars? Well, for one the movie was not as long as I hoped it would be and I also didn't care too much for the abrupt ending. Despite all that The Principal is probably the most realistic story of a man who even though has serious difficulty turning a trashy high school into a somewhat safer learning environment, manages to slowly succeed while firmly enforcing his rules. I wouldn't be surprised if this movie was based on a true story. I've seen movies like this such as Lean on Me, Dangerous Minds, High School High, and the Substitute but The Principal is the most realistic (not to mention more entertaining) film of the "Teacher vs. dangerous schools" scenario and I never seem to tire of it.

3-0 out of 5 stars "I'm The Principal, Man!"
In 1987, James Belushi starred in one his best roles to date. James stars as Rick Latimer: a tough, motorcycle bar-fighter who is a school teacher that is transfered to become the principal at the worst school in the entire district, Brandell, which is a drug-infested, full of gangs and the worst kid in the school that everybody fears is the gang leader Victor Duncan (Michael Wright). When Rick arrives at his new school, he notices all the violent actions that go on here. When he takes notice of all this, he makes his official speech to the school with these two words as his demand to the students: "NO MORE!" Now he plans to clean up this school with the help of the head security guard Jake (Louis Gossett Jr.).

Rick realizes that it won't be easy cleaning up this school with almost all of the students against them, including Duncan and his gang. Rick creates a whole team of secuity guards to stop the selling of drugs on school grounds, gambling, fighting, and stealing. Duncan realizes that this new "Principal" isn't going to go away. So he and his gang brutally beat him up to teach him a lesson. To Rick, THIS MEANS WAR! Now Rick has set his mind on getting rid of Duncan and his gang. The two start battling back and forth including a high-speed chase and threats until Duncan screams at Latimer, "You come here tomorrow, you're going home in a body bag." The BATTLE HAS BEGUN!

Will Rick be able to get rid of Duncan and create a school out of Brandell? Can the Principal do it? Buy the principal and James Belushi will show what a Principal is all about.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Principal gets a bravo . . . a Rio Bravo! (me an idiot)
In this wonderful reworking of Hawks' Rio Bravo, Belushi takes on both the role of the sheriff and of the drunk. This is the best of all of the 1980s faculty vs. evil student movies. Belushi towers in this film, giving a wondeful leading man performance which should have forever brought him out from under his brother's shadow. The film, like a lot of Hawks films, has the main characters trapped in a building and having to fight their ways out. Morales, Gosset and Rae Dawn give strong support. Though director's Cain's Young Guns was his most popular film on the decade, this was clearly his best.

3-0 out of 5 stars James Belushi gets a promotion
Following an arrest for drunk and disorderly conduct, schoolteacher Belushi is transferred to the worst school in the district and designated the new principal. Except for some halfhearted support from some of the faculty and a few students, he's all on his own. That sets the tone of the story, because most of the student body is out to get him. Louis Gossett Jr. is solid as the school security guard, and so is Rae Dawn Chong as a teacher that Belushi is able to make headway with. The fine performances and some gripping tension lift this above some of the other "violent youthgang" movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Principal Is Your Pal
Jim Belushi shines in this film. Lou Gossett and Rae Dawn Chong are strong as well. This film does bring together elements of drama, suspense, and comedy together very well. The drama of trying to reach out to the kids in the school. The suspense that hangs continually because of the threat of violent drug dealing students. The comedy comes from Belushi trying to put up with it all and make change happen. A worthwhile film and is worth checking out. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Strong cast delievers a stinker
Looking at who is in the movie you would think it wouldn't be a stinker. It was big time. Nothing seemed to work when it came to the comedy and since its a comedy movie that is essential of course. I had this film recommended by a guy at my work. Lets just say I am not going to take any more of his advice. He told me this was one of the funniest movies he has ever seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best flick I've ever seen!
I was laughing so hard I almost vomitted! Hillarious!

5-0 out of 5 stars LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY!
Gone Fishin' is a delightful comedy for any ages. The perfect family movie doesn't even begin to describe this. Danny Glover and Joe Peschi are perfect together, and this is that perfect Friday night family movie. It's a ten, ten plus, border line eleven!

1-0 out of 5 stars Complete Waste of Time
Gone Fishin' is among the worst Hollywood movies ever made. There is simply nothing to recommend within this completely random and unamusing mess. Danny Glover and Joe Pesci (buddies from the Lethal Weapon sequals) unite again here, looking tired and bewildered. The film was unlikely to have a script, giving the two stars the freedom to improvise, however both spend the time jerking around in some boat in Florida. Not even strong Pesci or Glover devotees could sit through this. Unfunny, uninspired, cliched and utterly dismal.

Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Much LESS than what it appears
This is a good example of the very type of film that parents should watch out for: an empty, non-challenging story that has just enough pretty cinematography to fool you into thinking that it might be more. It is basically a "save the panda" plot that takes a small boy on a supposedly harrowing but utterly predictable journey. The movie greatly underestimates the capacity of kids to find moral interpretations, understand symbolism, and interpret ambiguity. What you get here is about an hour and a half of pretty predictability -- a movie that asks nothing of you as a viewer, gives nothing in return, and just plods on with pretty images and a repetitious sound track that becomes quite irritating. At least with the overtly "bad" children's films you can recoup some value by discussing how bad they are -- and why -- with your kids. This movie doesn't even give you that opportunity. Much better films are out there, including many "classic" films from earlier eras -- Walt Disney's "20,000 Under the Sea" or "Mary Poppins" for instance. Pass this one and keep on looking... your extra time will be rewarded.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gimme a Break
This is not so much a review for the movie as much as it is thelling the annoying man with the 2 review to get a life. You realize that you are not a REAL reviewer, correct? Just wanted to make sure because most peoplee write a line or two about if a movie is cute or not. I've seen the movie many times and it's very cute! yes, maybe some parts are cheesey but guess what...it's a movie for CHILDREN! for a 5 - 10 year old child it would be exciting, funny, and education (to learn about pandas and how they are in danger of extincting) Another thing...have you seen any other movies before? how bout all the movies with MASSIVE explosions and the guns and endless violence. and you are going to call THE GREAT PANDA ADVENTURE "twisted" and "disturbing"...get a life! I mean..."oh no the parents are DIVORCED and the father is wrapped up in his work That is SOOO twisted!!!" your review of this movie is comical. and then I go to see what else you've reviewed...a bunch of stupid cartoons and you gave them all 5 stars ha ha get a life mr. D. Scott (and a job while your at it. I know that no one will probably read this but I thought I'd write it because some people bug me to no end. If you have a child they will love this movie. It shows life in (beautiful) china and the work it takes to keep animals in peace. one thing I do agree with D. Scott on is that sometimes you can tell the pandas are not real in a certain shot but I don't think your child will notice or even care.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL MOVIE
I too read the review written by D. Scott. I was appalled by it. What move did this gentelman view???!!!! This was a fabulous story filled with suspense, beauty, love and all that it can conquer. I am a teacher and have shown this movie to students ages 6-15 and their respective social studies teachers. EVERYONE LOVED IT!!! They learned a lot regarding endangered species and the power that dedication and love can hold in the end.

1-0 out of 5 stars Twisted, Very Disturbing "Family Film"
This is one of the worst "family films" I have ever subjected my family to. Although the photography of the hill country in China is nice, and the (real) pandas are always cute, this film is, frankly, a bit disturbing. If you are even considering letting your children watch this film, PLEASE watch it yourself first.

The storyline of the film has been covered in many other reviews, so I will focus on the parts that seem troubling to me. A boy's parents are divorced because the father is so preoccupied with his work that he forgets about them. So what happens when the father sends the boy a ticket to fly to China? The boy flies there, COMPLETELY ALONE, only to have his father forget, not only to pick him up at the airport, but that he is coming at all. The boy finally gets to the panda reserve by jumping on a bus with a panda picture on it (he just happens to see it outside of the airport) with complete strangers he cannot comminucate with. Luckily, the bus goes straight to the preserve, but the father does not recognize his own son at first, and then reveals that he has forgotten that he is coming altogether. Nice work, Dad. THEN, the father immediately leaves, hot on the trail of armed and dangerous panda poachers, only to have his son disobey and follow, actually getting the father shot and putting the pandas in greater peril. The father leaves in a helicopter with a panda, leaving behind his son and two others in the same area as the still armed poachers. Another great one, dad. Of course, the son again disobeys and heads off into the forest after the armed poachers, who repeatedly aim rifles and shoot at him. When he finds the poacher's secret cave, the walls are lined with dead panda pelts (OK, Disney it's not).

Believe it or not, the entire story goes downhill from there, culminating in a ridiculous scene where the father tries to find his lost and presumed dead son (who is still being pursued by the now very angry armed poachers) while riding across the mountains on a very slow TRACTOR - I guess the helicopter from before that evacuated the panda couldn't be spared to find two lost children who may be DEAD, and who ARE in mortal danger. The son only seems to be able to gain his father's love by saving the panda, which would have been saved many times over if he only done what he was told and STAYED PUT. When the father finally does see that his son is alive, is he happy? No - he is only focused on "saving" the baby panda, who is now up a tree (climbing trees is what baby pandas do, so why the big fuss?) The son is rewarded by his father telling him he can stay for the summer and work at the panda reserve with him. Wasn't that the idea to begin with, Dad, or have you forgotten that, too?

This is a very poor excuse for a film. The filmmakers obviously thought that the Chinese scenery (beautiful) and the pandas (cute, although it is easy to spot the animatronic ones from a mile away) are enough to carry a film. They are not. At least the filmmakers could have written a believable script. They did not. How about just a film that you can safely sit your kids in front of while you do something "more important?" Strike three.

If anything, the parenting shown in this film proves that the best thing you can do with your kids is to spend time with them, not simply plop them in front of dangerously mindless dreck like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars the Amazing Panda Adventure
It's a plausible scenario. quite a touching story. PANDAS looked quite real. The movie's got beautiful scenery and music, true to that part of the world. It shows the dedication of a true scientist, though didn't mention that there are more perils in the animal's natual habitat. It stands out to be a great movie. Pandas, indeed are very rear & precious species of the world! I don't remember if it's mentioned that PANDAS are high on the endangered species list. They need human intenvention. ... Read more

A vast improvement over its immediate predecessor, The Karate Kid III, this appealingly understated 1994 drama features a compelling performance by Hilary Swank, who would later win a Best Actress Oscar® for her work in Boys Don't Cry. Swank plays 17-year-old Julie Pierce, the recently orphaned and troubled granddaughter of an old war buddy of Miyagi Yakuga (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita, the lone holdover from the previous Karate Kid films). Harassed at school by adolescent boys under the sway of an evil coach (Michael Ironside), Julie reluctantly finds refuge in the calm teachings of Mr. Miyagi. While the film's violence is as contrived and silly as that of the other KK features, the script provides exotic compensations via a subplot set in a peaceful Buddhist monastery. Still, it's Morita's crafty professionalism and Swank's emotional authenticity that makes this film more watchable than anyone might have expected. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Next Karate Kid- Less of the Karate, More of the Kid!
"The Next Karate Kid" is the fourth and as it stands final Karate Kid movie. Released in 1994, a few years after "The Karate Kid Part III", this movie no longer focuses on the Karate Kid Daniel and his relationship with his Karate teacher Mr Miyagi. It is unexplained but suffice it to say the original karate kid has grown up. In "The Next Karate Kid" we follow Mr Miyagi's relationship with a teenage girl named Julie and watch as she becomes the next karate kid.

Julie (played by Hilary Swank who went on to win an Oscar for "Boys Don't Cry") is being bullied by boys at school who are following the violent teachings of their coach. Mr Miyagi (played by Pat Morita from the original Karate Kid movies) comes into her life and helps Julie learn courage and self respect through the use of karate and belief in oneself.

In comparison to the other three Karate Kid movies, "The Next Karate Kid" is a lot less violent. The Karate Kid has been increasing the violence with each movie, but has gone the other way with this one, and is all the better for it. There is a lot less of the karate and a lot more of the kid! No longer does the karate kid become about the next fight scene or the major karate move taught by Mr Miyagi. In "The Karate Kid" Danny learnt the crane, in "The Karate Kid Part II" Danny learnt the driver punch and in "The Karate Kid Part III" Danny learnt the Miyagi family kata. These special moves were used at the end of each movie. In contrast, with "The Next Karate Kid" Mr Miyagi teaches Julie the tiger kick, but she doesn't need to use it in the final fight. In fact in this movie Mr Miyagi has the final fight. No longer is fighting the driving force of the movie, and I'm sure that's something Mr Miyagi would agree with since he hates fighting anyway.

Here in "The Next Karate Kid" we are able to focus on the characters. And from that we can really feel for them when the fight scene does come. So if you are looking for a real karate action movie I suggest another movie. The fight choreography itself is sometimes a little poor, but it is all done by the same choreographer as the original Karate Kid movies so maybe he was just having a bad day. Mr Miyagi also appears to be having a bad day, because although he wins his fights fairly easily, he does look very old when fighting. I'm sure he used to kick higher and not lose his balance in the previous movies.

Hilary Swank is truly fantastic as Julie. Hilary Swank makes you believe in Julie and her actions are perfectly credible through Hilary Swank's performance. Mr Miyagi is almost as much Mr Miyagi as he always was. I say this because some of what Mr Miyagi says is questionable. He says lines like "If must fight, win!" Not entirely sure Mr Miyagi would say that. Anyway this is down to the writing and not the wonderful performance from Pat Morita.

For me, the movie did end kind of suddenly since I was expecting a bigger fight at the end. However this is based on my experience of the other karate kid movies. This fourth installment is very understated so be prepared for that.

In conclusion, "The Next Karate Kid" is great and I'm glad it's on DVD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fine movie but really not the series's sequel
If you love the Karate Kid series, you probably like the original casts, and you want to know what's going on with them after the first, second, and third sequels, and so on. You feel being with them and share their adventure one after anothers. That's what the series for. In this "The Next Karate Kid", Miyagi is the only one from original series casting. Although this movie is good and great performance from Hilary Swank (the new karate gal named Julie), it really does not fit in the series. It is more like a side story for Mr. Miyagi but mainly focuses on the new karate gal Julie. I'm a bit disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars ¿Fighting no good, but if fight, must win!¿
The Next Karate Kid

Miyagi Yakuga (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita) is called on for help, by the widow of an old war buddy.
She doesn't know what to do with her pretty but rebellious teenage granddaughter, after the recently orphaned girl was put in her care.
Meanwhile the girl, Judy, has her own troubles with a gang of local thugs at her school, led by a sadistic sports coach, while keeping her pet, a lame hawk hidden in the school grounds.
Her own love interest, a boy named Eric, is involved in the same battle with the gang called the Alpha elite.
Mr Miyagi knows just what to do, and the first thing is to teach Judy some self-discipline and inner calm.
The best line in the movie comes from Mr Miyagi, and isn't it the truth?

'Fighting no good, but if fight, must win!'

4-0 out of 5 stars weeeeeeeeeee
This is 10 times better than Karate Kid III, and worth watching if only to see Hilary Swank. She's adorable in this movie.

3-0 out of 5 stars YEAAAHHH....
This wasn't a bad movie--it wasn't the best either. Yes I will watch it when it's on tv, but other than that I can do without it. Opposed to what others have said, i think that KK3 was better than this one. To me that one had a lot of emotion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I hope the studio takes notice
I just felt I have to add my 2 cents and hope the execs at the studio notice what us fans are saying. We want to see the Magnificent Seven on DVD! The complete series please.

I absolutely loved this show and was disappointed when it was cancelled. While I understand these things happen sometimes I think it was unfair. It was a wonderfully entertaining show. I was drawn to it by Dale Midkiff, Ron Perlman and Andy Kavovit who I had watched on Time Trax, Beauty and the Beast and As the World Turns respectively. They were great to watch, along with Rick Worthy, Micheal Biehn, Eric Close and Tony Starke.

I never was a big fan of westerns, but this one was exciting, filled with equal parts action and humor. I was hooked from the get-go!

Well, I certainly hope us fans are noticed and we'll see this show released on DVD soon!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Magnificent Seven Rule
The Magnificent Seven was the best western television series ever made. All twenty-three episodes provided drama, humor, and the comraderie missing in 'modern-day' television. Michael Biehn as Chris Larabee, Eric Close as Vin Tanner, Ron Perlman as Josiah Sanchez, Dale Midkiff as Buck Wilmington, Andy Kavovit as JD Dunne, Tony Stark as Ezra Standish, and Rick Worthy as Nathan Jackson...all gave believable performances. Robert Vaughn, Tyne Daly, Jeff Kober, among other, were wonderful guest stars. My heart broke when this series was cancelled a second time. I believe the pilot and entire series have earned a DVD. Extras would be much appreciated such as bloopers, behind the scenes, etc. If you've never seen an episode, you've missed out.

5-0 out of 5 stars When will the wait be over?
I only saw the 'Magnificent Seven' TV series very sporadically in the UK - it kept getting 'bounced' from the TV schedules in favour of sporting events - but I was totally hooked on the episodes I saw.
The storylines were action-packed, humurous, moralistc and pertinent even to our modern world. The cast were awesome, and each talented actor was given the chance to shine either individually or as a collective. There was not a single weak episode made, and the writing and directing was superb too. In short, this superlative TV western series should never have been cancelled. But it was.
But what is perhaps an even greater travesty, is that the studio/owners haven't yet released the show on DVD. Surely this is a major oversight? I would love to own the complete series on DVD, and the show's universal appeal to young and old alike, means that my elderly parents also want to purchase the 'Magnificent Seven' TV series on disc.
I hope the show is earmarked for DVD release soon. It would make my year!

5-0 out of 5 stars Do We Have To Beg? Please~!
Now, I do believe that we deserve to have our fav boys on DVD!! I really hope that the studio would release it, because there are lots of fans who are truely in love with the show, but haven't watched a single episode!! Well, take ME for an example, I've fallen hard for the guys only through reading their bios and reading couple of fics... and now, I consider myself one of the biggest fans!

I do believe that plenty of fans would be more than pleased once the Magnificent 7 get released on DVD, and more than many would hurry to get their own copy. So, speaking on the behalf of all the fans who hadn't had the chance to watch these boys do their magic, WE WANT THE SERIES ON DVD!!!

With no doubt, once you take as much as a glimpse of the show, you'd get hooked. It's one of the best series I've ever heard of (unfortunately, not watched), and the fans are growing in the speed of light and there's no wonder why! It would be more than great to get the series on DVD, and I plan to buy my own copy once it's released.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Seven on DVD
Having recently caught most of the episodes on late-night tv here in the Netherlands, I've become a fan of this excellent show, and wonder why it was cancelled after only two seasons. I fear that the current preoccupation with reality tv has been the kiss of death to such quality productions . If any of you studio execs have an ounce of soul, you'll (1) get seasons 1 & 2 onto DVD (region-free?) (2) revive the show with the same outstanding cast. ... Read more
