Episode 1.1, "The Journey Begins" tells how young Sara Stanley (Sarah Polley) is shipped off to her late mother's relatives on Prince Edward Island when When her father is threatened with financial ruin. Sara arrives in Avonlea with her Nanny Louisa is tow, only to meet up with the formidable King family, headed by the imperious Aunt Hetty (Jackie Burroughs), who also happens to be the local school teacher. Episode 1.6, "The Proof of the Pudding" finds Felicity in charge of her siblings when Alec and Janet go to Charlottetown to celebrate their anniversary. Sarah is added to the mix when Aunt Hetty goes to visit the Governor's office to prevent an over-zealous lawyer from denying the King's water rights to the local pond. Actually it is sawdust that ends up in the pudding and the woman who shows up at the King's farm is not the tone deaf Great Aunt Eliza but Agnes Leslie, the wife of the Governor. Episode 1.3, "Quarantine at Alexander Abraham's" is one of the best adaptations of a Montgomery short story. Mrs. Rachel Lynde (Patricia Hamilton) is put in charge of the boy's Sunday School class and when she finds the young boy who work's Alexander Abraham's farm has gone truant, she heads out to save the boy's soul. However, everybody involved is in for a big shock when they all end up in Abraham's home only to discover he has been quarantined because of the small pox. Episode 1.4, "The Materializing of Duncan McTavish," begins when Sara asks Marilla Cuthbert (Colleen Dewhurst) "Did you ever have a beau?" Having endured a lifetime of slurs because she never did, Marilla defiantly declares "I had one once" and weaves a fantasy about her beau Duncan (because it is her favorite name) and McTavish (because she sees an advertisement for McTavish Porous Plasters). Of course, who should arrive in town but Duncan McTavish himself and Sara Stanley knows Fate has brought the two former lovers together again. Episode 1.11, "The Witch of Avonlea" is about Peg Bowen (Susan Cox), who lives in the woods smoking her pipe and doing whatever she wants with no concern for what the good folks of Avonlea think or say. When Felix King (Zachary Bennett) finds himself unable to spell anything during the class spelling bees because he is so afraid of Aunt Hetty, his nightmares convince him she might be a witch. So he goes off to visit Peg, who gives him a "magic" stone to give him confidence Episode 1.13, "Nothing Endures but Change," finds that Blair Stanley, Sara's father, has been acquitted of the scandalous embezzlement charges that forced him to send his daughter to live with her mother's relatives on Prince Edward Island. Blair arrives in Avonlea ready to take Sara back to Montreal, at which point everyone of Sara's King relatives absolutely freaks, especially Aunt Hetty, who announces she will not give the child up to her father. Sara wants to say goodbye to all her friends and attend the upcoming skating party she has been looking forward to, but her father wants to get out of Avonlea and as far away from Hetty as quickly as possible. Sara cannot abide the thought that two of the people she loves most in the world cannot even talk to each other civilly, and so she hatches up a plan to force their reconciliation. Episode 2.2, "How Kissing Was Discovered" begins Great Aunt Eliza (the real one) coming for a visit and turning the King household upside down. Meanwhile, Alec discovers that playing cricket is not as easy it was when he was a younger man and Felicity has her eye on a young cricket player on the visiting team. After all, she is now all grown up and has decided it is time to receive her "first kiss." However, Sarah and Felix have made a new friend in Gus Pike (Michael Mahonen), a young sailor recently arrived in Avonlea and looking for work. Alec lets Gus stay in his barn and while Felicity will not give the boy the time of day, it is clear that he finds her rather interesting. Episode 2.3, "Aunt Hetty's Ordeal" begins the pivotal relationship between Gus Pike and Hetty King begins. Given how Hetty treats Sara, Olivia and everybody else in the extended King family, you have to worry about poor, uneducated Gus. The problem is that everybody in Avonlea knows to take Hetty King with a grain or salt. But Gus thinks everything Aunt Hetty says is carved on stone tablets and when Hetty makes a heated offhand remark to the young man it has significant repercussions. Gus had been a minor character in previous episodes, and "Aunt Hetty's Ordeal" is where he starts becoming more important to the show in general (and Felicity King in particular). This is also the point where Hetty King, who tended to be a bit insufferable for my money, started to thaw, because the big difference between Gus and Sara, is that Gus is not family and Hetty ends up opening her heart to him. Granted, these are probably the better half of those first sixteen episodes. But the legion of fans for "Avonlea" would be better served by having each season available on DVD and they may well hold out for that then pick this up.
However, if you go to amazon.ca (Canada) you will find much more to choose from on this wonderful series!

Save for the colonies (Sides) and the design of the mobile suits (the word "Gundam" is never said in the course of the movie), the story, while good, has nothing to do with either the Mobile Suit Gundam series or the Gundam Wing series. It's completely out on its own. Definitly worth the time it takes to watch it. Though, I would've only given it 3.5 stars, but there's no halves here.
And of course, the pilot that didn't WANT to be a pilot. But HAD to be. In this, G-Saviour comes full circle. It's about 130 years AFTER the original series. Politics and the like are all so different, and still somewhat the same. And a crisis is arising. The reason is pretty contrived-- but hey, face it-- the original wasn't? No, in a way, this makes MORE sense. But what impressed ME was that the actors did this movies and DIDN'T seem lame. No... they seemed ANIME. For the FIRST TIME EVER we have live action actors acting like ANIME characters. INCLUDING the sometimes over the top stuff we are used to expecting from anime characters. And, in my opinion, for once it worked. Ever seen the live action Fist of the North Star? BAD movie. (Although, sadly, it was better than the ANIMATED FOTS movie.) But G-S WORKS. Because EVERYONE in the flick is NOT trying for an Academy award. They are being typical Anime characters. They are pulling the SAME bonehead plays that we have all come to know and love. And for once, it WORKS. It doesn't hurt that the computer generated mobile suits are downright real. I can BELIVE in these suits. It's scary. 90 minutes of mind-candy... not any different from an OAV... just with real people. Perfect? No. Good? If you like Gundam, yes. (And for those who ask why the term Gundam was never bought up-- Hey, it's 130 years LATER! Even a GUNDAM can become obsolete...)
The movie lacks every thing that makes a good gundam, I can easily get past the fact it is not the best looking film I have ever seen, but the characters lack chemistry, the other UC gundam characters were so great was because they all had a chemistry and all reacted to each other in a diffrent way, and you could easily understand their situations. The characters in here do not seem nearly as tragic as in "Mobile Suit Gundam" or the kill-a-minute "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam" in fact I would go as far and saying I did not like, understand, and I can not even remember the names of most charcters, unliek the epic motion picture "Mobile Suit Gundam Char's counter Attack" the characters in "G-Saviour" are rather plain and uneventfull, the action ( I know how much you probably love action) is very low, in fact, the show lacks the "full scaleness" of "Mobile Suit gundam SEED" of which it would look like every one was involved and the war was really brutal, "Savior" on the other hand made it seem like a walk in the park. In fact, this movie was actually kicked off the UC calender, because it had WAY to many continuity problems, over all I suguest looking into it if you are curious, how ever the film falls VERY short of being what the other UC shows were.

This movie is probably the most complete compendium of commonplaces I have seen in years. Every cliché in the book is there, from the failed musician in rehab, to the unscrupulous producers, to the frustrated housewife, to the mindless bimbo. Oh, by the way, in the subplot department we find the unsupportive husband, the moronic teenage son and the angelical little daughter. I'm not saying that you can't have a good time watching this movie, if you find a moment in which you don't want to occupy your head in more demanding tasks, but the shortcomings are impossible to conceal. There is no character development whatsoever, the kind of "comedy of errors" procedure is specially annoying since nobody can understand why do they want to complicate things in such a stupid way, the ending is "Singing in the Rain" like (and that should be enough to get the picture), and so on. The acting doesn't help a lot the efforts of the, apparently gifted, screenwriters to put some intelligent humor in the dialog. The male main character is appalling and the rest of his male colleagues are not much better, except for the one who plays the cajoling producer, which is even worse. However, it is fair to say that the difference with the women performances is monumental. Gail O'Grady gives a dignified rendering of her one-sided character and, although the script forces her to do stupid things, she manages to remain lovable to the audience. Kari Wuhrer is superb. She succeeds in taking her dumb-brunette role and pulling a person out of it, with different facets and an opening for development, which is aborted because she doesn't get enough time to work on it. But this is not her fault, of course. I would love to see her in a really interesting role in which she could show what she can, as well as how great she looks, which is undeniable, by the way. As I said, you can spend an uncritical one hour and half watching this movie if you are not looking for fancy things like logic, character development or intelligent entertainment.
Could someone help me?? Top movie!! EXCELLENT!! ***** FIVE STARS!!!!!!!!
Milli Vanilla, Kari Wuhrer style VH1, in all of its suckiness, does manage to produce a few bright spots in its vapid schedule. Out of Sync/Lip Service is one of those things. A few years ago, I managed to catch this film on VH1 something like twice, and it was never heard from again. Understand that at this time it was called Out of Sync, so of course I searched for a DVD release of this film under that title, until I discover Lip Service on Amazon. Same cast, some story, same everything as Out of Sync. So I ordered it. And while I can't say I'm not disappointed with the DVD release, it's serviceable. Plot Maggie Stanley is a bored housewife and mother, until one night when she is doing karaoke at a restaurant. Her breathtaking voice catches the ear of washed up record producer Roger Deacon. Deacon is currently having trouble with his latest musical charge, a hopelessly bad "singer" named Sunni. That is until he asks Maggie to record a few of his songs. What Maggie doesn't know is that Roger has passed off her voice as Sunni's, and Sunni becomes a superstar. Making matters worse is a planned wireless concert of Sunni's - and she doesn't know it's not her voice. Though Maggie's family doesn't believe her, she and Roger must team up to stop Sunni's concert once and for all. The Cast Gail O'Grady as Maggie Stanley Peter Outerbridge as Roger Deacon Kari Wuhrer as Sunni So, What Did I Think? Whichever title (Lip Service or Out of Sync) you prefer to call, it, this is a suprisingly excellent TV movie with commanding performances. Though you're more likely to rub it off as just another terrible TV-movie, it's a lot more than just that. It's actually a rather good social commentary, and it's entertaining too. And did I mention Kari Wuhrer is hot? DVD Overview In a word: Awful. Previews: This "feature" is simply a bunch of previews for other Starlight Entertainment releases. This company's releases seem to be domestic thrillers and the like that air on the Lifetime channel. Star Bios: Bios of the three leading stars. Too bad, like all star bios on DVDs, it's simply filler. And soon, they'll be out-of-date as well. Scene Selection, which is of course, on every single DVD. It's really not a feature. Unfortunately, there are no other audio options, suntitles, or even closed captioning on this disc. Not a great buy, but fans of this film will be glad it's available to buy. Note: This film is also available on VHS. Recommended
This movie was a lot of fun. My 60-something mother and 24-year old brother saw it together and enjoyed it thoroughly so there seems to be no generation gap. I enjoyed watching it with them even though I had already seen it so it also seems to be a movie you can watch several times. ... Read more | |
