4-0 out of 5 stars Dark magic
Sigourney Weaver makes a wicked stepmother that would scare even Hannibal. This is a role that she clearly had fun with. She is a convincingly evil and complex villain who paves the way for a very dark fairy tale. She is human - and some of her impulses are all too understandable - what woman wouldn't want to give a child to a husband she loves (in the age she lived in)? Then again, she is also a witch.

The performances of younger actors, Snow White and her darling, are not as wonderful - they seem to be there mostly for the scenery. Then again, this movie is mostly about scenery, of particular kind: blood, guts, hearts, and poisoned apples (how could I forget about that!)

It's a good, well-executed horror movie that is only on the surface rooted in an innocent children's tale. I recommend it as a quirky, original change of pace. If nothing else, it's the definition of unusual.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Creepy and Wonderous Tale...
"Snow White: A Tale of Terror" is a wonderful movie. The script stays pretty close to the actual story, but has unexpected twists and turns that are full of suspense and horror!

Singourney Weaver always nails her performances, and this one follows the pattern. She is the evil step-mother to Lilly, whose mother was killed to keep her alive. All is weel when Cladia (Weaver) arrives, but soon her mirror takes over her and leads her onto her wicked path. Soon it becomes clear that Lilly must die, so she sends her brother to do her dirty work. The murder failed, and Lilly ended up lost in the forest with the seven savage dwarfs...well, I won't ruin the rest...let's just say you DON'T know what happens next...

This is a fabulous film that is brilliant and has all of the right stuff to make you love or hate the characters. This is a must see!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Disturbing Piece
You know the story...or do you? This take on the classic tale is dark and gothic. They don't make films like these anymore. Today, over-the-top gore is the thing. This is scary in a different way.It is disturbing and eerie(SPOILER: Especially the concept of the Queen with her stillborn son).
Sigourney Weaver gives her best performance since ALIEN.She takes on a role of madness and edge of your seat insanity. The way she talks into her mirror is so dramatic and expressive. The beautifully designed mirror's expression is evermore the same.
The girl who plays Lillian,a.k.a. Snow White, is wonderful. How many girls her age can show fear through her eyes. She shows her best in the ending scene.
This is an excellent achievement in horror. It is beautifully filmed and professionally directed. The music makes each scene unique and suspenceful(excluding the parts with the seven miners(a.k.a. dwarves)A must see.

5-0 out of 5 stars This movie is fantastic.
This is by far the best version of the classic fairy tale ever created. Sigourney Weaver is fantastic as Snow White's evil sorcereress step-mother - driven to madness by the thurst to be flawless.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mirror, Mirror... Who is the Scariest of All?
This version of the classic story stars Sigourney Weaver and Sam Neill and is far from the cheery animated version you may be familiar with..

Sam Neill plays Lillian's father. After the death of his wife he marries Sigourney Weaver. Things are fine at first but the aging Weaver begins to feel jealousy towards her step-daughter. She feels she is in competition for her husband's affections. With the help of her mysterious magic mirror (a frightening piece of furniture if I ever saw one) she begins making plans to be number one.

But as Weaver makes her plans she also begins to sink into deeper and deeper madness as she eliminates the servants, her step-daughter and even her brother. But Lillian manages to survive and meets a band of outlaw miner's hoping to find a rich strike. She manages to win their hearts in time and eventually returns to challenge her step-mother.

This is a very dark telling of the Snow White story. It is more tragic than many tellings in that the step-mother is mad and not evil. The girl who plays Lillian is excellent. Her ability to show powerful emotion with a single look really adds to the atmosphere of this dark film.

If you are interested in seeing a good dark tale then Snow White could be just what you are looking for. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars 'Silence of the Lambs', it's not
I watched "When the Bough Breaks" last night as an uncut, no commercials, cable TV movie.

Up front, to give the movie credit, it was entertaining enough. No boredom. Just nagging thoughts.

Too early in the movie, the parallels to "Silence of the Lambs" become very apparent. That started with the isolated underground captivity of the key informant/psych patient and continued all the way through the confrontation with the villain in the basement.

But even before that comes the nagging impression that police department had simply not done a competent investigation. Does it really take a profiler from the state to see all these July 16 connections?

Then comes the prosecutor's nightmare. Ali simply breaks into the house without a search warrant. With all the things she sees, there goes any hope of a conviction. And this is a trained law enforcement officer?

Does a trained law enforcement officer go into as dangerous an environment as that basement without notifying a dispatcher and asking for some backup? Of course, having backup arrive from two miles away would have ruined the climax of the film.

And so many loose ends....

--The predominace of smoking, even extending to the child patient.
--Unexplained scratch-mauling of the profiler's back.
--The disappearance of the police captain in the middle of the plot.
--The ability of a cop to so effectively hypnotize an autistic child.
--The question of the patient's Jordan/Jennifer identity and reason for the wrist markings when the identity of the other twin seems so apparent.

None of these mar the film's entertainment value. It's only afterwards that one feels diminished by a badly written screenplay.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ally Walker movies
I just wanted to comment on the review given by the person From the Phillipines. I have done several querys to find The Profiler tv series on DVD. Will that be coming anytime soon? I would love to see it. Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars ALLY WALKER IS A GREAT PROFILER!!!!!
Ally Walker stars as Audrey MacLeah, a profiler from the Texas Rangers helping the Houston Police investigate severed human hands that showed up during a flash-flood. Her lead to the case is a child with psychic abilities locked up in a mental institution. The story also has a sub-plot on how the local police resent MacLeah for being a State Law Enforcer helping them solve the case. The movie is a very good suspense thriller & Ally Walker's acting is terrific. The movie was released in 1993. I only have the video on VHS but would gladly buy the DVD version in an instant!

Interestingly though, Ally Walker later went on to star in the TV series "Profiler" (she played a profiler/forensic psychologist working for the FBI) from 1996 to 1999.

On a personal note, I watched & bought the video of "When The Bough Breaks" because I was so impressed with her performance on "Profiler" (I just had to see all the projects that she's done). I just wish that "Profiler" would be available on video, preferrably in DVD format (with cast & crew commentaries as well as other behind-the-scenes materials)! ... Read more
