3-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting Family Movie
I have heard many people say that this version of "Angels in the Outfield" is vastly inferior to the original 1954 movie. Well, if that's the case, the original must have been pretty darn spectacular, because this movie is very well-done. Roger and J.P. are foster children living under the temporary care of a kind woman named Maggie. Roger is the main character. His mother is dead, and his troubled father rarely visits, even when he promises to. One day, however, his father jokingly says that they have as much chance of being a family again as the last-place California Angels (now the Anaheim Angels) have to win the pennant. Roger takes this statement at face value and prays for heavenly help, which soon arrives in the form of angels who actually come onto the playing field to assist the team. This begins a wonderful summer in which the players, along with their disgruntled manager, start to believe in themselves and find the value of teamwork and courage. Although this is a good film for the entire family (only some very mild profanity and the awkward parent scenes are carried out appropriately), there are several issues that will not be missed by knowledgable (older) viewers. For example, the potential for racial trouble involving the manager and the two boys at the end of the film (I don't want to give it away!) is completely skipped over, although it is a very likely scenario. Although, it is a Disney movie, so everything is supposed to be too good to be true! Overall, "Angels in the Outfield" is an emotional, although sometimes unbelievable, story with a good message.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great baseball movie
I have seen this movie several times and never get tired of it. The acting in the movie is great and the story is cool too.

Roger and JP are two children who live in a foster-home with a kind woman name Maggie. Roger and JP are in love with baseball and the local Anaheim Angels who play only a few blocks from their home. They sneak into every game that they are able to, to watch their beloved team. Roger, however feels sad quite often because he wants to be back with his troubled father. His father made a deal with him that he'd be back to pick him up if the Angels ever won the pennant. During one game Roger see's angels in the outfield helping a player making a catch, and at the plate, helping them hit. But nobody else can see them, not even JP. After they tell the manager about this he has Roger motions to him whenever he sees the angels. Then the Angels start winning after starting off the season very slow. With the help of the angels that Roger sees they win the pennant. Roger gets very sad because he will have to leave Maggie and JP, but his troubled father never comes to pick him up which breaks his heart.

If you are looking for a great, funny baseball movie with a fantasy twist you should check out Angels in the Outfield.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty sappy stuff
Foster-child Roger (Joseph Gordon-Leavitt) prays for the California Angels to win the pennant in the mistaken belief that it will lead to reconciliation with his father (Dermot Mulroney). Angels begin to intervene on the Angels' behalf, bringing hope, faith, and a renewed sense of self-worth to bitter manager George Knox (Danny Glover) and his clumsy team. Diabetics should avoid this film at all costs. It goes for easy sentimentality every step of the way, leading to a very predictable outcome. Kids may like it, though I don't want to be the one to explain why God would pick sides in a sports contest, especially since He and his angels ought to be well aware that answering Roger's prayers will not lead to the outcome he so desperately desires. Oh well, if you can put your brain on hold and get misty-eyed over a stadium full of spectators flapping their arms like angels, you ought to have a good time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sentimental, Touching, and Sure to Make You Smile
While it's true that this movie has a high quantity of cheeziness, in this case it works. This movie reminds you that all things happen for a reason, even if you can't see it right away, it shows the value of beleiving, and it restores your faith in people.
The cast is very well chosen. All of the characters are well established, with very definite personalities, and all of the actors step up and fill their shoes nicely. Your heart will be touched a thousand times over during the course of this movie. You'll laugh, and you'll cry, and when the movie's over you'll feel like maybe the world is a little bit better place.
The film is greatly suited for children, as it doesn't involve the sort of foul humour that so many movies do now. It's just good old fashioned fun, as any baseball movie should be. There IS a heavy dose of morals in the mix. Beyond the over-all theme of believing in yourself, and having faith that God has a greater plan, the film also touches on the dangers of smoking, and how unnecessary profanity is.
Many scenes in this movie are truly beautiful and inspiring. Everytime the crowd stands up to flap their arms in support of Mel Clark (Tony Danza) I can't help but shed a tear, and when Roger's prayers are answered and he gets a family my heart melts all over again.
This movie is truly among the most uplifting of children's movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disney at it's best
A spiritual film is what you could name it.Angels really have a presence on the field. They affect how the Basball Team the Angels play. They can help make dazzling catches and hits.Sounds unbelievedle. It is! To better understand the film you have to have imganination.A Christian know Angels do exsict So it's easy for them to not be cynical.Now..I know Angels don't do all those crazy stunts. But it's a very touching moment when Danny Glover the Angel informs his mystic friend Roger,A boy whose father left him, that one of the teamates is going to die and become a basball angel. He knows this six monthes before it happens. It really helps a person to think about divinity. As the foster mother says, players often pray before their big moment to God,so why are Angels running around so strange.Actually a thought provaking film Great for Families.(I heard a reviewer on Amazon critizes the boy Roger for believing his father will take him back if the Angels win the Penent.Geez,He's a child, clinging onto a lost hope. One in despair will ask for the impossible. And the Impossible happened.Just not the way Roger expected! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating 80's Sci-Fi!
"Well... We've got our experiment now, don't we?" That's what the scientist at the Time Travel command center say's, after discovering that a Man on a motorcycle was thrown back in time. Fred ward and Bad Guy, Peter Coyote & Posse do a remarkably great job in this movie. The cast selected for this movie was Top Notch. The bonus is beautiful brunet Actress, Belinda Bauer, who plays a Hottie with brians & a gun! Michael Nesmith should be acknowledged for his contributions to the music. The Soundtrack is EXCELLENT! It was taylor-made for the movie and ads to the experience. You'll love the dialog, music and his cool gadgets! Open your mind and sit back... You'll enjoy it! (It also helps if you're not a stuck-up movie critic like Leonard Maltin, who gets paid to trash movies.) This movie is long overdue on DVD. I think they should have released a soundtrack too! !!REMEMBER, THIS MOVIE IS AN INDEPENDANT RELEASE... SUPPORT INDEPENDANT MOVIES!! By the way, fans of this movie should check out Michael Nesmiths website: www.videoranch.com

3-0 out of 5 stars A reasonably enjoyable (albeit a bit bumpy) TimeRide
I remember going to see this at the local 'plex with a friend when it first came out, and I rather enjoyed the experience. Now, after seeing it again for the first time in almost two decades, I found it to be a fairly standard western/time-travel adventure with a smidge of romance, and a dollop of fish-out-of-water comedy thrown in for good measure. Our hero (Fred Ward), a famous Baja racing motocross biker testing out a few high-tech tchochkes (well, they tried to make the tchochkes look high-tech, anyway, but like the "futuristic" gadgetry seen in the original "Star Trek" show, they ended up kinda dated), somehow manages to stumble into some time-traveling experiment out in a remote part of the desert, and gets transported back to the old west. All the while he never seems to know that he's gone back in time, despite several cues & clues thrown at him during his stay.

The aforementioned fish-out-of-water comedic elements are occasionally amusing, but most of 'em are a bit too subtle or are not pulled off quite as effectively as they could have been (the director acknowledges this problem in the commentary track). Fortunately, the main heavy and his two bumbling henchmen pick up the levity as they set out to take the "futuristic" dirt bike for themselves. In the meantime, the hero manages to get a little action with a surprisingly assertive woman, which sets up the tried-and-true travel movie gimmick known as... well, that's be givin' away too much if ya ain't seen this yet, so I won't discuss this particular point any further. All in all, I found "TimeRider" a not-half-bad waste of an hour and a half, with the nostalgic angle enhanced by the early 80s adventure film rock music soundtrack that relied heavily on synthesizer keyboard melodies. Even the old west scenes have this kinda music, only more old west-y in sound... if that makes any sorta sense. It ain't no "Back to the Future", but it'll do in a pinch...

But wait, there's more: what is a movie DVD without the obligatory theatrical trailer or two? In this instance, they threw two trailers in as well as several TV spots. BTW it was the TV spots that got my seven-year-old brain thinkin' to myself, "Hey, that movie looks kinda cool! Maybe I can harangue my older friend who lives a cross the street to go see it with me at the local multiplex!" Which is what I eventually did...

Then there was the big surprise: a feature-length commentary track by the movie's director! Never in a million years did I ever think "TimeRider" would have a commentary track devoted to it, but there ya have it. Anyhoo, he goes over the usual technical stuff, talks about certain scenes and moments he felt could've been done a little better, and shows his penchant for nepotism by pointing out the various relatives he used as extras in some of the scenes. He also discusses the lessons he learned shooting the movie, which was his first feature film as a director. Ya know, the kinda stuff you usually hear in a commentary track...

Now I'm gonna go off on a tangent for a moment here, but... I had a bear of a time trying to find this on video OR DVD anywhere! I went to just about every online store looking for it, and failed to get any results whatsoever on their search engines. Fortunately, I caught sight of the DVD at an "old-fashioned" brick-and-mortar setup, and found out why my searches were unsuccessful: I was typing the movie's title into the online stores' search engines as two separate words (Time Rider), rather than as one compound word (TimeRider)! I guess none of the online stores I checked out could be bothered to have their search keywords set up to where both "Time Rider" and "TimeRider" would lead to a hit for this movie...

And on another tangent: I coulda' sworn there was a scene near the end where one of the bad guys got blown up by a stick of dynamite or something off-camera, and after the explosion the camera cuts to a pair of bloody, tattered boots hitting the ground. Am I thinkin' of a different movie here? I could have sworn it was here where I saw that scene. If anybody knows which flick I'm talkin' about where this moment appears, drop me an e-mail, willya? Thanks. BTW I know it's not "Raising Arizona"...

Anyhoo, I gotta skate. I'm gonna go watch my other fave Fred Ward action/adventure movie that I haven't seen in a long time: "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins"! I tell ya, I'm so excited to finally see that flick again, I'm havin' trouble maintainin' bladder control...

'Late!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great movie, disappointing release....
Interesting movie, but I was disappointed that a scene at the end got cut short. This is your basic fish out of water story with a motocross racer, Lyle Swan (played by Fred Ward) gets unknowingly caught in a time travel experiment and launched about 100 years in the past. The general reaction, due to his attire and motorized horse is that he is some kind of devil, but one person he comes across, Porter Reese, a criminal outlaw played by Peter Coyote, sees the potential in owning this amazing contraption for himself. All of this takes place in the southern California desert, and Lyle is unaware of what has happened to him. He thinks he just got lost during a race, and tries to find his way back home. I thought it was interesting that he never really gets clued into the fact that he is 100 years out of time. As I said in the beginning, and I think another reviewer mentions this, that a few critical seconds were cut out of a scene at the end. These few seconds of missing footage include a helicopter, its rear rotor blade, and the main antagonist. I think this part was edited out for a television release and never put back in for the DVD release, which is a real shame. You wouldn't think 3 to 5 seconds of footage could impact a movie as much as it does, but it does here. This is the reason why I am giving the release 3 stars instead of four. Other than that, this was a fun sci-fi/western/action movie.

2-0 out of 5 stars They blew it over 3 lousy seconds
I give the movie 4 stars; the DVD, 2. I wish I had read the Amazon reviews before I picked this DVD up last night--but then, why would I have expected that anything had changed? I've been a fan of this flick since its theatrical release, so I was very happy to have TIMERIDER on DVD finally, and pleased with the transfer, but the TV/airline-version ending completely BITES. "Okay, here comes the tail rotor...and I can hear Reese (Coyote) screaming...and all those squishy sound effects...but...but...YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!!" (Good thing I was home alone.) According to sources, the DVD was made from the "only usable negative available." Uh...sure. I find it impossible to believe that Michael "Mr. Video" Nesmith couldn't find a single viable source in his files for THREE WHOLE SECONDS of film. Laserdisc? How about digitally cleaning up a VHS tape? Unfreakinbelievable.

Am I upset? You're darn tootin' I am. Sometimes "little" things matter A LOT. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic nonsense, great music.
Since Amazon lists two versions of this disc, let me make it clear I'm referring to the Anchor Bay release. Everyone else's reviews hit the high points; for me the music videos were always the shining stars in this program. Let me add that the picture quality is indeed a bit "soft" but that's the way this program has always looked (I've had it in various formats since it was first released--anyone remember CED discs?). The commentary is indeed pointless, but I can't think of any other DVD commentary that isn't pointless. But no one has mentioned that this release has an extra comedy bit that wasn't in previous releases! That alone should make this DVD just a bit special. Now we need a complete Television Parts set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the film, BUT.......
I just recieved the DVD of "Elephant Parts" & have just finished watching it, I haven't laughed soooo much in years!!. I used to own the VHS version a long time ago & watching my new copy tonight, it reminded me how funny it was. Mike Nesmith is trully a genius when it comes to not only producing music, but video as well & it's a big pitty that he didn't go further with his "back-to-back" video concept (MTV format) that he sold to a large television company, it could have been so much more interesting!!. I do have ONE slightly small complaint, I found the video quality it's self, to be poor. I remember seeing the video version I had having a much clearer picture, has the video deteriorated over the years, or was it sourced from an inferior master tape?. Apart from that I loved watching it again for the first time in years & hope that his follow-up T.V. series "Televison Parts" will also be released on DVD in the near future!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great blast from the past
When I learned this was out on DVD, I had to get it!
I first saw this when I went off to college in the early 80s and loved it. Always remembered several of the skits, like "Nachos? We don't need no stinkin' nachos!" and "margengrena".
Later on, when Nez did "TV Parts", I watched it religiously (and wished I had taped it). Sigh. I wish they'd bring that out on DVD too, like so many other TV shows are doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't believe no one mentioned "the fish ate my furniture"
I have loved this collection of videos and short skits since I was a teenager in 1980. The other reviewers are correct in that you have to have the right sense of humor to enjoy it, though. If you like your humor on the bizzare side, (and trying to think of the right analogy here is not easy, because it's really not like anything else I know of), then you will love this DVD. I'm thinking "Repo Man" is a movie that has a similar feel, and since Nesmith produced that movie, it's no surprise.
The skit in "Elephant Parts" where he "interprets" the words to a song sung in Spanish for his date is my favorite. "My wife's biscuits edge closer...No running by the pool...." I am laughing just writing this.... The music videos are fabulous, as I think it can be argued that some of the best music videos came out of the '80's, and Nesmith, being the visionary behind MTV, and having all the experience with the Monkees, obviously would likely have great videos for his tunes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bogus Audio Commentary
I was very dissapointed with the nonsense that passed as audio commentary. If the NEZ wanted to puiblish new work he should not do it in the disguise of audio commentary that is SUPPOSED to relate to what we see on the screen. Should have just been satisfied with the VHS I have already. ... Read more

You wouldn't know it by watching the mostly ridiculous escapades on display in Wild America, but this comedy/adventure for young boys is marginally based on the true story of Marshall, Mark, and Marty Stouffer, three young brothers who successfully pursued their dream of becoming wildlife filmmakers. From their home in the South, the Stouffer boys embark on a cross-country trek to the West, where they hope to get rare footage from inside the dreaded Cave of the Sleeping Bears. Along the way they encounter cute British tourist girls, deadly alligators, a rampaging moose, and an Air Force fighter on a bombing range. In other words, Wild America is about as contrived as it could possibly be and still claim to be based on reality, but it is harmless enough for young viewers with its wholesome message about bravery, hard work, and family togetherness. Jonathan Taylor Thomas (from television's Home Improvement) leads the young cast of adventurers. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Three cute boys, 'N' loads of cute animals!!
I think the title kind of explains it all really. Three guys going off into the wild of America, on a mission to find a cave filled with a thousand bears, although being told that they sleep alone, the boys don't believe anyone, find the cave, and have loads of adventures along the way!! Jonathan Taylor Thomas played a great part in this movie and he really narrated it well too! As I live in the UK, I was lucky enough to see it while I was in America, I'd always liked Jonathan and Devon's films, and this was another one I HAD TO HAVE!!! I would also say that this is a great film for all the family, only recently has it been released in the UK, but I bought it in America, luckily I have an international VCR. This film is way cool. I would really reccommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars It could have been better.
Wild America isn't that wild. It still has good story elements too it, but you feel cheated when you realize the kids in the movie didn't go anywhere but to a bunch of unknown areas. So much for going across America. The actors fit the movie perfectly. Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Devon Sawa, and Scott Bairstow seem to be enjoying their roles as the three boys who hit the road to film animals. The music is ok and the cinematography is wonderful. I wish they would have seen more animals. The movie made me smile throughout, but many aspects of the movie could have been better. Their trip across so called "America" could have been extented greatly and the mystery man should have been removed. He's just a waste of time and talent by Danny Glover. The DVD version has the widescreen aspect and the original trailer, plus a bunch of info on the movie. The Movie is rated PG for Profanity and violence, mainly. The swearing is totally pointless and if it were gone, would have made a better movie overall for kids. Watch at your own risk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great all round film!
I first saw this film in 1999 I loved it.The first thing that grabbed my attention was the 3 brothers and their relationship throughout the film and how it changes. The storyline with the youngest brother marshall was great. The film is like an adventure story, the type you would of loved to have gone on! Traveling, being young, free and inexperienced at almost everything.its a bit like a coming of age film, finding yourself etc. This all sounds heavy but its not,the film is filled with humour from the brothers and all the other characters, the animals are great and some even get in on the humour too.The music even grabs me,the whole thing is a feel good factor of a film, one I would recommend anyone watching of any age.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
Okay so I wouldn't say this is the best movie I've ever seen. But I still really enjoyed it. I liked how they showed the relationship between the three brothers. Sure they picked on JTT but they still protected him especially Devon Sawa. He was more protective of him than Scott Bairstow. I liked the end and How JTT showed there father that they needed to find there own dream and the permission to follow them. So I'd reccomended it to Brothers and children 10 and Up. Sure The animals looked fake but It was still enjoyable.

4-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable, interesting plot with well-done acting
I haven't seen this movie too often, but I really enjoy it every time that I do. Why? Because it is full of fun, adventure and mild comedy. The acting is wonderful, all of the three boys are terrific. However, this isn't necessarily a movie for younger children-it is geared towards pre-teens and teenagers. There is obscenities, implications, and alcholol use that isn't right for everyone.
But, it is mad up for in the interesting plot. I don't know how much of this is true, but I enjoy it just the same. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES
I am 67 years old, so I guess that I am a child at heart. The cast was uniformally wonderful. I am a big fan of Mara Wilson, and all of the cast performed equally well. The movie is a fantasy, with it's basic moral that faith can do miracles. While, unfortunately this is not always true, in this movie it certainly provides a feel good ending. So, please, lose your disbelief and enjoy this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Balloon Farm, a charming story
Like many fantasy stories, you have to have a suspension of disbelief to enjoy it. I thought the cast did a good job. Perhaps other reviewers shouldn't have watched it many times if they didn't like it the first time. I have watched it many times and still enjoy it. I enjoy most Disney films and am a fan of Mara Wilson.

I thought the concept was well executed. I didn't expect that the balloons' contents would be what they were. I thought all of the characters gave fine performances, that includes the balloons as well.

If you have never believed in magic or can't enjoy a fantasy, this is not the movie for you. If you can you will be thoroughly entertained.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Magical Place Where Imigination Soars!
A freindly newcomer to a drought-ravaged farm town surprises everyone by growing an amazing crop of brilliantly colored balloons in his field. While embracing the balloons as a sign of hope in troubled times, the community is suddenly torn between grouchy old Wheezle Mayfield and their mysterious new freind, Farmer Potter. Now, it's up to a little girl named Willow to save the day. Based on the book written by Jerdine Nolen.

Ballon Farm is definitely nothing special. It was made for family audiences to view and enjoy (but it seems like it was made for 3 - 8 year olds). When I watched this Disney TV movie, I thought it was downright weird and predictable. Just by watching this movie you can tell the script was written for very young audiences. You'll see the adults in the film saying and doing immature things. The only positive thing about this movie is that it's extremely funny the first time you watch it (but then afterwards it just plain boring). Not to mention Disney chose poorly in picking the cast members. Overall, Balloon Farm is a waste of time and money. DO NOT BUY! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The funniest movie since Encino Man!!!
Well, its that time of the year again. The time to max out your credit cards on uselss items your children will probably lose or forget about in three days. The time to hang up lights around the house only to find the bulbs don't work. More importantly, however, it is also the time of year to bring out the christmas movie collection such as the Charlie Brown Christmas Special, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and lets not forget, Home Alone. Sure, these movies are great, but we see them year after year, repeated non-stop on TV stations such as TBS and FOX. But I'm here to give you some good news. A new breed of Christmas movie is here, and it comes in the name of Santa Who? It stars the wacky, yet lovable Lelie Neilsen who is in his best form since Naked Gun 33 1/3. It is also directed by the incomperable Chad Hoffman who is, in my mind, one day going to be the next Stanley Kubrick. The way he adds the slide whistle noise into Santa Who in order to convey people slipping on ice, or forgeting something they once had (hint, hint...Santa Whaaaa?)just boggles my mind. And let me not forget to mention the cinematography. If you thought a TV movie about Santa Claus losing his memory couldn't have beautiful setting, lighting and mood...let this movie show you the light (no pun intended...[slide whistle])
This movie is the funniest film since Encino Man, starring Pauly Shore, Brendon Fraser, and Sean Astin. If you haven't seen that film, i strongly urge you to see it as well. At this point in time, Santa Who? might be passed off as just another terrible movie quickly put together by television networks to rejuvinate the Christmas Spirit. I cannot tell you enough, it is not. The story is actually quite entertaining and kids will laugh time after time at the wacky sounds and slide whistles. So instead of going to the store to rent the usual christmas movie, try something new and rent Santa Who?

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so good
Just rented this movie last night, it was a let down as far as good holiday movies go. The only thing going for it was it was pleasant enough I wasn't ashamed to have the kids watch it, it was just bland and boring. Movies like "A Christmas Story", "Miracle on 34th Street", and "(The) Santa Claus" are much more entertaining and can also be watched by young children.

Also, didn't realize it was a made-for-TV movie, but it was pretty obvious as I watched it since it had the darkening scenes you always notice right before the commerical break, yuk.

2-0 out of 5 stars If You Want a Christmas Movie for Kids, It's OK
If you expect Leslie Nielsen to stop his trademark bumbling slapstick acting which he showed in his "Naked Gun" series; and if you buy the idea of Santa with amnesia, give another star and make it three. As I don't either, excuse me for my low rating.

So, if you want to buy a Christmas present for your kids, and thinking about a harmless and amusing one, "Santa Who?" will do. It is good-natured, and though slightly sexual relationship is implied (between the two adults), it is nothing you might be embarrassed with when watching it with kids.

However, if you seek for more profound and thought-provoking one, how about "Miracle on 34th Street"? Both the original and the remake (featuring Natalie Wood and Mara Wilson respectively, and they are so cute!!) are great, I assure you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Santa With Amnesia - Fun Story
This is the type of film that is fun to put on when your spirits need to be lifted and want to bring a smile to your face. It does both of these in great fashion.

Santa is out riding in his sleigh, hits some turbulence and falls to earth. He lands on the car of a TV reporter who is need of a Christmas story for his newscast and loses his memory. This reporter had long ago lost his ability to believe in Santa. Of course the viewer must suspend reality and accept the situation to fully enjoy the results of this story. Someone looking only for a funny film will be disappointed as it is not played strictly for laughs. Leslie Neilsen has played a real Santa before (All I Want For Christmas) and does a great job here as a befuddled person trying to remember who he really is. Again, someone expecting an over the top comic performance will not be amused, but this is meant as a FAMILY film and really succeedes.

Of course, being a Christmas story, the reporter regains his faith in Santa and in himself and, just in time, Santa regains his memory. Even Scrooge would know this was going to happen.

This began as a TV movie on the Sunday Night Disney program last Christmas. I'd taped it then and have watched it a number of times since. Now it is great to have it on DVD without commercials.

If you are one of those people who thinks anyone with Merry Christmas on his lips should be buried with a stake of holly through his heart (sorry Mr. Dickens), don't watch this film, but for anyone looking for a nice, smile involking 88 minutes of Christmas fantasy, get this DVD. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This is a Cute Movie! It Should Be on DVD!
I saw Harry and The Hendersons in a movie theater and I thought it was a cute movie. John Lithgow and the rest of the cast were really good and I think this a nice movie for the whole family. It is about a family who discovers and befriends a sasquatch (Bigfoot) who they name Harry. Lookout for David Suchet (Poirot) as a unscrupulous hunter out to bag Bigfoot. I saw this movie long before I started watching Poirot and I didn't know who David Suchet was back then but he did a good job playing the villain. I recommend this movie and I think it should be put out on DVD (Widescreen).

5-0 out of 5 stars "Harry" stands tall among most other family-oriented movies!
Hilarious, genuinely touching and perfectly acted entertainment! John Lithgow once again shows just how talented he is in his portrayal of George Henderson, the poor beleagured "owner" of this huge creature that he mistakenly believes that he has killed by accident. Lithgow can, of course, portray a wide range of emotions very well, and his many talents are greatly used in this wonderful story. Melinda Dillon as wife Nancy is the perfect match for George, and does a fabulous job, as always. Watch for a hilarious turn by Lainie Kazan as the goofy, nosey next-door neighbor--what a hoot! Don Ameche brings his usual excellence to the roll of a non-believing believer who has searched his whole life for what poor George has stumbled upon quite by accident. The dinner table scene when he comes face-to-face with the real thing will put a lump in your throat every time you watch it! And if you aren't familiar with David Suchet away from the outstanding "Poirot" series on PBS, wait until you see his turn as the sleazy, nasty hunter determined to bag the ultimate trophy--Harry! Additionally, it's no surprise that awards were won by the individuals responsible for the incredible make-up job that was necessary to convincingly portray the huge, massive Sasquatch. He's incredibly real and absolutely believable. Can't recommend this movie enough--buy it, rent it or borrow it today and watch this one with your family around you. You won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny funny movie!
I love this film. Its part of the magic "trio" of cult classic films: including "Kazaam" and "Ghost dad."

This movie is about a family who is visited by big foot. The acting in this movie is amazing! The charcters responded so realisticly.

I know this is supposed to be a comedy, but the actors responded so realistcly to having a big foot living in their house. Thats the way I would have acted if it was really happening to me.

Well, not much can be said about this movie. It basicly speakes for it itself.

ENJOY

1-0 out of 5 stars Let's Get Harry
Awful "What-If?" movie about bigfoot and a family who takes it in after accidentally running it over with their car. HARRY AND THE HENDERSONS was produced by Spielberg's production company during a period when quite a few movies were being produced in the vain of Disney-esque family fare. The costume/special effects of bigfoot (played by Kevin Peter Hall) are impressive. However, when bigfoot has that smiling, dumb grin on its/his? face (especially in close-ups with teeth showing and all) it is sickening beyond reproach. John Lithgow, Melinda Dillon(A CHRISTMAS STORY), and Don Ameche (COCOON),hold the cast together in this harmless, emotionally light, shallow kiddie movie, but it doesn't go anywhere. Pro-Wrestler and part-time actor "Andre the Giant" (THE PRINCESS BRIDE) played bigfoot on an episode of THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN and it was much more satisfying, entertaining and inventive than this forgettable film.

4-0 out of 5 stars "It's A Major Discovery. We Have To Take It Home!"
HARRY AND THE HENDERSONS is a cross between a cryptozoologist's, X-FILESs, dream film and a Hallmark special off Lifetime. It is THE FAMILY MAN meets THE MOTHMAN. And, if you like big, harry sasquatches and functional, happy families that take them in, well this is the flick for you.

This family film has E.T. written all over it. You've got cute, loveable kids and a furry, caring, mythical creature. The parents just don't know what to do when they slam into the sasquatch while driving through the forest on vacation and apparently kill him in his Bigfoot tracks. However, when they strap the creature to the car-roof to drive him to a local fairy-tale vet's office, he turns out to be not only fictitious, but also very much alive. The rollicking tale and fun that follows can only be stopped by, you guessed it, a Bigfoot hunter with the wrong motivation in mind.

All kidding aside, I loved this flick when I was a kid. We had a VHS copy of the film, and my brothers and I wore it out something nuts. HARRY AND THE HENDERSONS is a family film. It's great for children and people who have yet to accept the fact that unicorns, Bigfeet and the Loch Ness Monster are "pretend." Meanwhile, you and your friends might enjoy picking this monster up from video stores on a rainy night when you just feeling like laughing at extreme silliness. I mean, c'mon guys, we're talking about some folks that run over a sasquatch and take it back to suburbia where it becomes a part of the family. If that won't make you laugh, I just don't know what will. I'm laughing just thinking about it. The part when Harry gets into the car and his head makes the roof bulge up, because he's so tall and big and strong..... golly that's just the best!

Well, John Lithgow (FOOTLOSE; SHREK) may be one of the best banjo players this side of Uranus, but all that fingerpicking sure doesn't get in the way of his fathering/acting skills. He's constantly caught between doing what he thinks would be best for his family and his compassion for imaginary, Harries. However, when Jacques LaFleur (David Suchet - GREYSTOKE; A PERFECT MURDER), a hunter out for Bigfoot blood, starts sniffing the sasquatch trail, Harry and co. are forced to recruit Dr. Wallace Wrightwood (Don Ameche - TRADING PLACES; COCOON), a Bigfoot enthusiast, and flee to the hills to save Harry. Isn't that a unique tail?

While the film is a winner in many ways, one can't escape the fact that Bigfoot is not a real creature! This staggering statement can't be ignored. Throughout the film, you just can't help but laugh and comment, "Hang on just a darn second! Now, that's not real. There's no such thing as Bigfoot." And, then you'd laugh out loud and smack yourself on the knee.

Overall, HARRY AND THE HENDERSONS is a must-own rental for anyone with a flare for cheesy movies about nonsensically impossible creatures and the families they love. ... Read more
