Amazon.com This two-disc compilation of episodes from the show's first season is aptly titled, because Ally McBeal--a Boston lawyer played by Calista Flockhart--is defined by her seemingly perpetual singlehood, her sexual and emotional yearnings, her professional passions, and--by one of Kelley's creative masterstrokes--her flights of imagination (often visualized via amusing computer-generated effects) that give the series a constant, unpredictable edge of humor and emotional depth. These well-chosen episodes offer a comprehensive summary of the first season's major developments, including the emotional history shared by Ally and her now-married colleague Billy (Gil Bellows); the notorious "dancing baby" (in "Cro-Magnon") symbolizing the insistent ticking of Ally's biological clock; the amiable quirks of John "the Biscuit" Cage (Peter MacNicol); and the dubious pearls of wisdom known as "Fishisms." Here we witness the sublime chemistry of the ensemble cast, and each member is given ample time in the spotlight. Regular guest star Dyan Cannon is strongly featured in "Silver Bells," prior to the second-season addition of Nelle (Portia DeRossi) and Ling (Lucy Liu). That leaves plenty of room to establish Ally McBeal as the lively focus of the series--confused, opinionated, sexy, neurotic, frustrated, ecstatic, intelligent, emotional... and never, ever boring. --Jeff Shannon Reviews (58)
For you hardcore Ally fans I'll give you some handy advice. Save up for a multi-region dvd player or a computer that plays dvds. Go on over to amazon.co.uk and purchase the season box sets! Good luck!!!

I don't understand why so many people are put off. Lawrence was hardly subtle in playing a black Rodney-Kingesque character who then has to team up with the white cop who allegedly abused him. And Lawrence's character is put in his place later in the film when he finds that the Steve Zahn character has a black girlfriend. I admit that this was a little heavy-handed, but that's how this movie goes. That said..it was not a great movie. it was very predictable in plot. I knew right away who the bad guys would turn out to be, and pretty much how the story would unfold. There were some funny moments, but this was pretty standard "odd-couple" action comedy ala Lethal Weapon and Rush Hour, but not nearly as good as those movies.
This film is definitely a rental, not a purchase. It is entertaining, humorous, but nothing you'll remember in a few days.

Meet Darren Silverman; a lonely, and desperate romantic who never catches a break when it comes to women. His one and only true love Sandy had moved away a long time ago, and since then he has feared that he will be alone forever. The only thing he has are his two best buddies, Wayne and J.D., who are more than hopeless geeks. Everything changes when Darren meets Judith; a cold-hearted woman who wants to prey on a man she can control. Soon, the two start to go out, and Judith demands that Darren shall no longer be associated with J.D. and Wayne. Well, the two friends are not going to surrender and see their pal, Darren, throw his life away so he can be controlled by a psychotic woman who J.D. refers to her as "Hannibal Lecture". They decide to kidnap Judith so they can have their buddy back. And that's when all of the laughs and chaos starts to come at you like an out of control train. "Saving Silverman" is an outrageous comedy that delivers non-stop laughs. Though there are some moments where the movie seems to go to desperate lengths, it is still a great comedy. Don't pay attention to the critics, just see the movie for yourself and make up your own mind.
First, the good parts about it (and I will not waste much time on plot so as not to ruin the movie). Anytime Jack Black (and sometimes when Steven Zahn) is on screen, you will laugh. Period! I've always believed in Black, and this is no exception (infact, this may be one of his best works, where he is just as dumb and clueless as can be!). Zahn is ok in this film, but he's been better. He's a little too serious for my taste here, but he provides a few genuine laughs. Also, R. Lee Ermey is hilarious as the football coach; sugesting that the best way to separate Biggs from his hell of a girlfriend is to kill her. Now, I will discuss what disgusts me about this movie. First of all, the parts created for Biggs and Peet are way overdone. Biggs plays such a big loser (wow, what a shocker!) in this film that whenever I see him on screen, I want to beat him senseless and say "Quit being a G.D. pushover!!! Use that brain that God gave you!!" Throughout the movie, he constantly gives into Judith's (Peet) every demands, including butt implants, burning his beloved Neil Diamond albums (why young guys in their late 20's would worship Neil Diamond of all people is a mystery to me), and, get this, not hanging out with his lifelong friends. GET A G.D. CLUE AND QUIT BEING A MORON!!! ......Ok, I'm cooled down now. Equally as annoying is Peet, as she takes her character way over the top. She is such a horrible bitch that not even the hounds of hell would want to date her. I really was hoping that Black and Zahn would kill her, because the characters that Biggs and Peet play are losers you really wouldn't wish on anyone. (by the way, having Zahn marry Peet at the end is a lame way to end the movie; he should have beat the crap outta her!) Finally, Jason Biggs cannot act; period! Someone should just give him the pink slip and end his career; American Pie would have been funnier (by epic proportions) if he was not in it, and unless he completely changes his acting style, I will await his demise.

Amazon.com Reviews (169)
But in "Big Daddy", Sandler plays Sonny Koufax. What makes this role so much better is that there's a sense of love from within. When a young boy (Cole/Dylan Sprouse) is left outside his door, he takes him in and gives him a home. And for anyone who saw "Billy Madison" you see the irony here. Anyway, to make a long story short, it's the most well-rounded character he's every played. It's a movie that anyone can like, even if they don't like Adam Sandler. Grant it, he has the starring role, but he's with a great supporting cast. It includes Joey Lauren Adams, Jon Stewart and Rob Schneider, along with some Sandler-movie regulars. Joey is particularly good here. She provides more seriousness than most of his female co-stars from earlier films. This movie is definetly a comedy--and it' a good one at that. But it has more than just stupid laughs. It's cute, it's sad, and it's something you shouldn't be able to hate. The movie may be around 3.5 stars, it's better than just three. The only reason it didn't get more is because of the ending. I didn't think much of the ending, but I guess it was fitting. Anyway, Adam Sandler does something in this movie that I hope continues for him; that being playing great roles. So watch this movie, whether you like Adam Sandler or not. It' a great film.
Then I bought the movie. This is not a family friendly movie becuase the language is to salty. Sandler, who hardly ever got very much face time on Saturday night Live, except in the credits has turned out to be one of my favorites. I like almost everything he does. Big daddy is a 4 star, very good movie, but i have to give it 3 stars for the cursing.
Yes, it is crude at times. But Sandler shows what live is all about, hope, love and faith.

You don't want any comedy that's too sophisticated, like "Deconstructing Harry". You don't want any comedy that's too insane, like "There's Something About Mary". You JUST want to laugh. I'm proud to say "Happy Gilmore" will make you scream with laughter, my friend. This is Adam Sandler's platinum hit, the best comedy of his career. It has the coveted Amazon.com five-star customer rating, a rare find indeed for the comedy lover, and reviewers call it "the best golf comedy since 'Caddyshack'". The movie stars Adam Sandler (Bulletproof, The Wedding Singer, Billy Madison) as Happy Gilmore, a short-fused hockey player who just realized he AGAIN didn't make the cut for his hockey team for the 10th time in a row. After taking out his raging anger on the coach, he life begins to spiral downwards when his girlfriend leaves him, and he realizes his grandmother's prized house built by his grandfather's bare hands if about to be seized by the IRS in 90 days due to her failure to pay taxes in over a decade. But when he discovers his monster hockey slapshot equals one hell of a talent in golf, he is talked into playing golf by a local retired golfer, Chubbs Peterson, for the money to reclaim his grandma's house. But not only is Happy not ready for golf, but the president of the Pro Tour, Doug Thompson, doesn't think golf is ready for Happy! Even his future golf enemy, Shooter McGavin, thinks he's making a mockery of golf with his very bad temper and his rambunctious behavior. But Happy is a hit with fans, so he's weaved himself through the loophole...for now. For a shining moment he's riding on Cloud 9-iron, but Shooter McGavin, and the accidental death of his beloved mentor Chubbs, are threatening to take away not only his grandmother's house, but his dream as well, and it's not just about his grandma's house anymore...it's about triumph. So, if you love simple comedy, get Happy Gilmore on DVD. You'll fall down laughing....guaranteed!
This movie is like a modern version of Caddyshack, and great for the whole family.
One question I have is how come you can watch a trailer for Happy Gilmore on the Billy Madison DVD and the trailer is shown in widescreen but they opted to use the cropped pan and scan format for Happy Gilmore on it's own DVD? That is my only complaint about this DVD and if a widescreen DVD ever becomes available I will buy it and either sell trade or give away or my pan and scan DVD! ... Read more | |

Amazon.com Season 1, Part 1--the first of six Wiseguy DVD sets--includes the entire nine-episode arc (plus pilot) in which Vinnie infiltrates the New Jersey mob family of Sonny Steelgrave, a silk-suited kingpin played by Ray Sharkey in his finest TV role. Their brotherly relationship poses a moral dilemma for Vinnie (giving the arc its dramatic core and primary source of suspense), and Wiseguy earned its reputation as a well-written series that favored character-driven tension while providing the requisite pulp fiction (i.e. occasional murder and mayhem) that kept viewers and advertisers happy. While the DVD packaging gives bogus equal billing to Annette Bening (who appears here in one pivotal episode), her pre-stardom appearance is indicative of the show's consistently high standards in writing, casting, and stylish direction. The styles may be dated (including poodle-puff hairdos for women, including Bening), but there's not a weak episode in the bunch, including the stand-alone shows (involving domestic crises for McPike and Burroughs) that allowed character growth beyond the story-arc structure. After the intense "Sonny Steelgrave" arc of first-season episodes, the producers of Wiseguy faced the challenge of topping themselves, and they did it by casting a relatively unknown New York stage actor named Kevin Spacey, who proceeded to chew up the scenery as only a future Oscar®-winner could. But Spacey's not the only reason for the giddy success of the "Mel Profitt" arc, which finds OCB agent Vinnie Terranova (Ken Wahl) teaming up with sociopathic assassin Roger Lococco (William Russ) in an effort to infiltrate the global drugs-and-guns empire of the Proffitt siblings Mel (Spacey), a "manic-depressive genius with acute paranoia," and his codependent sister Susan (Joan Severance), who keeps her incestuously devoted brother happy by injecting home-brewed narcotics between his toes (hence giving Spacey his trademark line, "Only the toes knows!"). TV audiences in 1988 had never seen such a twisted sibling relationship, and there's plenty of eccentric chemistry between Spacey and then-newcomer Severance, who later developed a loyal male following as a B-movie sexpot. Completing their triangle of terror is Russ, playing Lococco as a tormented Vietnam vet with a massive chip on his shoulder, luring Vinnie into a life of luxury and lethal behavior, thus complicating matters considerably for Vinnie's covert handlers McPike (Jonathan Banks) and Lifeguard (Jim Byrnes), who grow increasingly worried as Vinnie gains Mel Profitt's hard-won trust. The quality of these 12 episodes remains consistently high as the Profitts reach "psychotic critical mass," leading to Mafia connections and a new direction for Vinnie's loving mother (well-played by Elsa Raven). Through it all, Wahl (who proves himself a man of few words in a sparse one-episode commentary) maintains his strong presence as a leading man, generously allowing Spacey's rising star to shine. Wiseguy still had some highlights in its future, but the "Mel Profitt" arc represents the series at its best. --Jeff Shannon Reviews (1)
