Description

Growing up in New York City, George Carlin was always the class clown. He went on to become one of the great comedians of all time, with appeal that spans generations. His brand of provocative sociopolitical commentary and scathing comic style brought him four Grammy awards, most recently in 2002.Carlin was the first-ever host of NBC's Saturday Night Live, and has starred in twelve HBO specials. He continues to perform to sold-out audiences at venues across the country.George Carlin's sixth HBO standup concert special, "What Am I Doing in New Jersey?," aired as a live broadcast from the park Theater in Union City, New Jersey. The live performance includes classic routines, "Cars & Driving II," "Reagan's Gang, Church People, and American Values," "People I can Do Without," and "Keeping People Alert." ... 1-0 out of 5 stars AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL!!!!!!!
Where's the funny George Carlin everyone talks about? I got a sacreligious, gripey, anti-america, and liberal old man. Did I get the wrong George Carlin? This couldn't POSSIABLY be the one everyone says is so hilarious! There was 1 scene that was even remotely funny, but all I got was a smile, but I NEVER laughed out loud. Please don't buy it online, and if you see it at Borders avoid it at ALL costs. Why, oh, WHY did I waste my money?

2-0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING
I love Carlin's early work and am always amazed at his incredible, phenomenal timing. Since I'm from New Jersey, I couldn't resist What Am I Doing In New Jersey. Unfortunately, it's really not that funny. Carlin just seems to be going through the motions, relying on old formulas. He's not enjoying himself. There's no room for this one in my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carlin in Top Form and Never Disappoints
It's always a joy to see comedian George Carlin in action. Just when you think he cannot come up with anything more outrageous or funny, he surprises us every time. While I admit that I love his new stuff, I have to say I'm really a bigger fan of his older material. The man's funny either way, but still I love hearing his older material. So you can imagine how happy I was to find "George Carlin: What am I Doing in New Jersey?" on DVD.

I owned the album to this comedy concert for quite some time. In fact, I think it's one of his albums that I listen to the most. So it was great to finally see the stuff performed. As funny as he is on CD, his facial expressions are priceless. In this special he talks about everything from Ronald Regan to bumper stickers; from toll booths to keeping people in line; from cars and driving to singles bars, and a whole lot more.

There was hardly a single minute where I didn't find myself laughing. You can tell he really loves what he does and the man takes chances. He's not your typical comedian. The stuff he did back then was considered very controversial. Now, he's still a brilliant comedian who never seems to run out of ideas.

The DVD is great, being that the picture and sound quality is pretty good for it being so old. There's no extras available, which is a shame. I wouldn't mind seeing a documentary or two, or even a recent Carlin interview. Still, it is a high quality DVD nonetheless.

"George Carlin: What am I Doing in New Jersey?" is a must-have for any Carlin fan. Don't' even question or think about it. Just pick it up and enjoy the ride. I really wished there were more comedians like him, but what can you do? That's why he stands out so much. He's a man who can never be duplicated. This is a great comedy special that had me laughing from start to finish.

5-0 out of 5 stars turning point in George's Career
This is the first special in which George actually expresses his political beliefs, and because of that I believe that this is one of his best. If it wasn't proven that George was a genius before, this one does it. It's funny as all hell, so do yourself a favor and go out and buy this one today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent works
Works from the late 80's - Mostly about topics such as health trends, driving, and Reaganism hypocrisy. This features the emergence of the openly "angry" Carlin we've seen in the past decade. Here he starts using more openly violent tones and language than in the 70's especially in the "Driving" skit and "Reagan" skit. He even bridges many skits by dismissing the earlier one, saying "That's enough of that!" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Old camp songs with some updated verses
In this video, the kids ride the yellow school bus to Camp Kidsongs and sing "The More We Get Together." Then they meet their counselors and do the usual summer camp activities: hiking, swimming, fishing, arts and crafts, singing around the campfire, meeting "The Old Gray Mare" who lives at the camp, etc. They take a hike to "The Caissons go Rolling Along," which includes a new verse about looking at nature and is interspersed with shots of a puma, a bear, an alligator, and other denizens of the wild. The "Fishin' Blues" sequence is funny, as the kids catch everything but fish, and their counselor ends up getting pulled into the water by the one that got away. "Boom Boom Ain't It Great to be Crazy" accompanies the sack races and a relay where you have to carry an egg on a spoon (remember that?)

Some of the songs have been updated for "political "correctness" since I learned them back in the 1960s. "99 Bottles of Beer" is now "99 bottles of Pop" -- no, they don't sing all 99 verses (thank heavens!), only numbers 99 and 98 in a medly of campfire songs, including a short-short version of "Found a Peanut" that makes no mention of it being rotten or the consequences of eating it anyway. "The Ants Go Marching," however, is rendered in full. So is "On Top Of Spaghetti," about that poor meatball that "rolled off the table and onto the floor." The ending of this one has also been changed. I learned it as "A truck came and squashed it, the next day it died -- I honor my meatball on the 4th of July." In the Kidsongs version, the meatball does roll down the road, but the truck never appears. Instead, the meatball rolls back uphill to the picnic table and onto the kid's plate again. I suppose this change was to eliminate the "violence" of squashing the poor meatball on screen -- but it also removes some of the goof-around silliness of the old song. Besides, who wants a meatball on their plate that has been rolling all over the ground? I doubt many kids are actually going to sing the new version at camp.

Still, the video is well done and does give a taste of what summer camp is like. So I won't dock it for changing the words. When my grandson is old enough, I'm sure he'll learn the real versions when he goes to summer camp. Either that, or he'll pick them up from us! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars far from realistic, you'll miss nothing by passing this by
We purchased this video (not our first Kidsongs vid) for our two-year-old and we are very disappointed. It is an extremely inaccurate, ethnocentric view of the world. India, Russia and the Far East are missing from this not-so-global-view and the Italian-messy-spaghetti segment is, at best, insensitive.
And although the Spanish song and the Japanese song are each sung in their original language, the other songs are all in English. We were hoping (expecting really) to hear a variety of languages. After all, it's not titled "I'd like to teach the world to sing in English." Though, perhaps it should be. Additionally, the choice of songs leaves a lot to be desired. Could they find no better song to represent Jamaica than "Day-O?" It's not even a Jamaican song!
But perhaps worst of all is that they referred to Africa as a country and not as the continent with various, diverse countries that it is. Finally, if African colonialism and religious oppression had a theme song, it would be "Kumbaya!" Yet this is the "African" song that the kids sing.
Yes, yes, it's a childrens' video and it's supposed to be light and fun and entertaining. But with a little more effort, it could have also been accurate and educational. We would have gladly paid another couple of dollars for something better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Video
This video is my 16 mo. old daughter's favorite. She watches and dances throughout the whole video. I don't care for the spaghetti segment like the other viewers, but the rest of the songs are very nice. My baby's favorites are "Frere Jacques" and "Kumbaya" The songs are great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Kidsongs series
My daughter (not 18-months old) got this video when she was 12 months old. She loves it and even now watches it atleast once or twice a week. She hums/sings along with many of the songs and especially loves "sakura". We think this is the best video of the Kidsongs series

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughters like it and so do I!
We bought this video years ago for my now 7-year old daughter. It's a favorite right now for my 20-month old. She sings and dances along... and sometimes gets the rest of us going, too! The kids who perform are quite talented and it's the type of video I think is good for kids to watch if they're in front of a t.v. I agree with another reviewer who didn't care for the spaghetti song, otherwise it's a great video. We have "Boppin' with the Biggles" and like that one, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not one of the best, but still very good
I've seen and purchased several Kidsongs video's. The video starts off with the kids singing "We have the whole world in our hands". I love the idea of "Mr. World" taking the kids to different places, and teaching kids there is no difference in people that have different skin color. There's is only one piece that I really don't like, and that is when "Mr. World" takes the kids to Italy. "Mr. World" slams spagetti into the sauce pan, then takes the pan and spagetti and drops handfuls of noodles onto the kids heads. The rest is very good. Great singing and entertainment that keeps my 18 month old watching for the entire 30 minutes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still a Classic
My children are nearly 12 years about. She loved the BabySongs and KidSongs videos. Now my two year old is loving the same videos. Always classics - kids love them. And my husband and I sing along too.

5-0 out of 5 stars CANDY MAN !!
Hal Schafer as the candy man is excellent. He puts so much energy into his character. Schafer is a wonderful actor and i am dissapointed that i havent seen him in any other videos!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Video
This kidsong video is of Kids that show you a variety of different occupations. It really shows the audience (kids of- course!) that you can be just about anything when you grow up. The video goes through occupations like a movie star, teacher, doctor, truck driver, candy man, police officer and fireman.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nanny and Christopher Give Thumbs Up
My three-year-old grandson has watched this video dozens of times since receiving it over a year ago. He loves the songs, including, "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," "Short'n Bread," "Skip to My Lou," and of course, "Old McDonald." The animals are a big hit with him, although I think the cow is actually a bull. The kids are cute, and all races are represented. And, even I am not sick of it, however, I am a Grandmother.

My daughter does not like Kidsongs videos. She says they are a bunch of 80's kids lip-syncing bad songs; and they are too short. My grandson and I disagree. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Could've Been Better....
This was my first DVD, so initially I was all excited because I didn't know any better. I mean, this had to have been done in a rush. The first season of American Idol had so many wonderful performances and I just don't understand why the makers wanted to be so stingy about supplying us, the fans, with those performances! There is one performance for each finalist except for EJ, AJ, and RJ. There are two performances each for Kelly, Justin, and Nikki. I know Christina Christian didn't make the top three (which she should've) but the DVD would've been much better if there were more performances by her (especially her rendition of Glory Of Love). There are a few group songs that are good, the bonus extras are fine, but the entire thing could've been much better. With the low price, it's still worth buying though.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not highly impressed!
I consider myself to be an avid fan of American Idol. I came across the first season by accident, when I was sitting at home on a Tuesday night, and happened to turn on the tv to FOX. Ryan Star was singing at the time. When I heard that they came out with a DVD on American Idol, I assumed that it would be the ENTIRE SEASON. I was mistaken! Out of the 10 top finalists, you only get to view 5 out of the 10 do at least one solo performance. Kelly and Justin do 3-4, Niki does 2, Tamyra does one, and Christina Richin does 1. The DVD did a lot of recaps and behind the scenes, but still it wasn't enough to be worth while. It's ovious that American Idol is a hit, and the producers should think highly of doing a COMPLETE SEASON set of BOTH the FIRST & SECOND season!!

4-0 out of 5 stars I sure wish I could be on there, don't you all?
I think American Idol is such a cool idea. We all know that we secretly wish we were on there ourselves. So for all of you people judging, think of what it took for all of the singers to get that far. They even inspired me to sing myself, I bought a voice lesson Cd off Amazon- Voice Lessons To Go by Vaccarino, and I am listening to all my favorite artists and singing all the time. A group of my friends got together for Karaoke the other night- cool place- rented the room out, and I promise you I impressed. These singers are awesome. And learning to sing myself is teaching me how hard they really do work.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite DVDs
In the words of Randy, this DVD, "Did it's thang dawg!" I absolutely loved it. I only have one complaint about it. First, this movie didn't show many of the performances by the singers (they don't show ANY of EJay's and Jim's performance, not even in the extra features). They should have a section of EVERY performance by all of the singers, even in the Top 30.

Overall, this DVD was absolutely amazing. Brain was extremely funny in many sections of the show. I loved that section with the judges (I think it's called "When Judges Attack."). Wonderful!

But there's one more thing, why don't they have Season 2 and Season 3???

1-0 out of 5 stars UGGHHHHH!!!!
First of all, this show sucks in every single way that it is possible for a show to suck. They have run the gamut. You have your reality TV suck-factor (ALL "reality" TV shows are utterly dispicable), your arrogant, pompous, condescending, prissy, whiny, obnoxious, needs-to-just-keel-over-and-die British retard suck-factor (Simon, of course), your cutesy, trendy, demographically appealing American host with perpetually disheveled hair suck-factor (Ryan Seacrest, who I also hate), your long-irrelevant, obsolete, washed-up has-been who suddenly inexplicably feels she has a right to rate others suck-factor (the never-talented Paula Abdul), and of course then there's the contestants, who (whether they can sing or not) invariably pick the most inane, tepid, lame, schlocky, redundant, idiotic, pointless songs you could ever be unfortunate enough to hear on the worst lite-rock station in Kansas. ANYBODY who likes the kind of music they promote on "American Idol" needs to be tossed to the lions, and supposing Hell exists, I cannot imagine a better group of people to condemn to it than the people responsible for this show, which provides us all with a little slice of Hell here on earth.
