Volume 13: (Disc 1) Where The Money Is (Episode 112): Rating (4) - An obnoxious film producer enlists The Saint to help get his kidnapped daughter back. Simon is off to Paris to act as the go between, and deliver the ransom. The Saint's wits are put to the test as he roams the French countryside pursued by a band of desperate men, in this episode directed by Roger Moore. Vendetta for the Saint (Episodes 113 and 114): Rating (5) - This two part adventure is based on Saint creator Leslie Charteris's last novel. While in Naples, Simon comes to the aid of an English tourist. When the man turns up dead, The Saint begins to investigate into the mysterious past of a Mafia don. The trail leads to Sicily, where the Saint becomes the marked for death, eventually becoming a prisoner of the Mafia. After a daring escape, The Saint returns with a vengeance to save the day, in one of the finest adventures in the series. Volume 14: (Disc 2) The Ex-King of Diamonds (Episode 115): Rating (4) - On the Riviera, a deposed king intends to use a rigged card game to raise funds to buy a shipment of weapons. The Saint teams with a wealthy Texan, and an expert in gambling probabilities, to foil the bold and daring gambit. The Man Who Gambled With Life (Episode 116): Rating (3) - A rich industrialist is dying, and has selected Simon Templar to participate in a dangerous experiment. The Saint, never one to be made a pawn, looks to take control of the situation, and derail the masterplan, in this slightly off the wall episode. Portrait of Brenda (Episode 117): Rating (4) - In London, Simon discovers a murdered artist, and begins investigating his death. Mystery revolves around a portait, a spiritual guru, and a dead singer, with a couple of lovely ladies thrown into the mix. Ivor Dean makes his final appearance as police inspector Claude Eustace Teal, lending a helping hand in this adventure that maintains the suspense until the very end. The World Beater (Episode 118): Rating (3) - The final episode of the series finds Simon Templar behind of wheel of a rally racing car. Intrigue and sabotage abound, as The Saint prepares to drive in a high stakes road rally. A woman from his past makes an appearance, bringing excitement into his life. The episodes in this collection feature some excellent writing and acting, taking this long running series to a conclusion strongly. After this, Roger Moore would again return to television, teaming with Tony Curtis, in The Persuaders. He would then assume his most famous role, after being chosen to succeed Sean Connery as the new James Bond, debuting in Live and Let Die in 1973.
(As an Avengers' fan, I could not help but note how Set 7, like the other color episodes, feature several also The Avengers' co-stars, hereafter identified with an asterisk.*) In particular Volume 13 features two episodes that each has two unique treats. The first, "Where the Money Is," features Moore as actor-director. (As a music performer-educator, I became intrigued by Moore's directing philosophy that music should enhance, and not overshadow, action and dialogue.) Kenneth G. Warren* does an excellent job playing a bossy American film director. Sandor Elis* plays the head of a kidnapping trio that includes Derek Newark*. These actors are among the many superior co-stars who made this episode work - in spite of Templar's cheesy last line that perhaps could have been scratched. Episodes 2 and 3, the Leslie Charterlis-based "Vendetta for the Saint," stars the late Ian Hendry*, who played "Dr. Keel" of The Avengers 1961-62 season. "Vendetta" gives us Avengers' fans, who feel loss over having only two of Hendry's episodes available, an entertaining look at this dynamic actor. In "Vendetta" Hendry plays the Italian-American Mafia don Alessandro Gestamio. Templar, upon reading about the death of a British banker at Gestamio's hands, sets out on a one-man war against the Mafia itself, and discovers Gestamio himself has a secret he dare not let the Mafia know. Look for star performances from several actors including Aimi MacDonald*, Steven Plytas*, and a young Rosemary Dexter. Volume 14 begins with "The Ex-King of Diamonds" (Willoughby Goddard) whose baccarat skills have a sinister core and even more sinister purpose. In this episode Templar is assisted by a mathematical genius (Ronald Radd*), his available daughter (Isla Blair), and a Texas oil billionaire (Stuart Damon). Helpful to me was the explanation by the math professor of baccarat to an inquisitive American tourist (Araby Lockhart). Jeremy Young* continues his excellent character work as a chauffeur/co-conspirator. "The Man Who Gambled with Life," millionaire scientist-megalomaniac Keith Longman (Clifford Evans*), seeks to lure Templar into a chilling (no-pun intended) experiment. This episode features a hilarious nod to the Emma Peel Avengers' era by Templar and Longman's younger daughter Stella (Jayne Soffiano). It is also the weakest in Set 7 due to its rushed ending. In addition, the timing during the dialogue between Templar and Longman is rather slow. If the producers had made this a two-part, two-hour movie, I believe it would have flowed better. Set 7 concludes with a bang as Templar drives "The World Beater" in a car rally with high stakes for a desperate father-son car-building team (James Kerry and Eddie Byrne), an auto mogul (George A. Cooper*), and a former girlfriend named Kay (Patricia Haines*), who has secret schemes behind her need for speed. As always, Templar wins the race that puts mogul, father and son in pocket, uncovers the truth, and beats the villains at their own game. Those who like racing will not be disappointed: the excitement on and off the road are for all to see, as well as some hilarious moments when Templar makes Kay push and dig his car out of the mud! For the 60's Simon Templar-Roger Moore fans, I believe Set 7 of The Saint is an overall good buy. In our day where acting talent seems based on violence, voyeurism and vulgarity, today's mass media producers should take note that companies like A&E can revive and sell these quality classic shows, and still profit substantially. For people like myself who seek alternatives, the rebirth of The Saint, The Avengers, and other like shows on video and DVD have granted us a welcome refuge, and provided us entertainment redemption. ... After the initial run of 26 episodes featuring Police Surgeon David Keel and his cohort John Steed had aired in the UK in 1961/62, the producers of the program opted to bring Steed to the forefront of the action and give him a number of different "assistants." Thus, for season two, 26 further episodes were made and broadcast in 1962/63 featuring Steed abetted by Martin King, Venus Smith or Cathy Gale. Mrs. Gale turned out to be the most popular and successful foil for the suave agent, and the other characters did not return after season two. Unlike the later Peel/King stories which were all made on film, these studio based TV shows are much more reliant on dialogue and plot than visual elements, and can be somewhat heavy going as a result. A&E is releasing these stories in a somewhat confusing order, and has started with season three. The first two sets released, Avengers 64 1 & 2, feature the LAST six episodes of season three. Next comes Avengers 63 sets 1 & 2 which comprises of the first half of the season. Next up in the release order is 63 sets 3 & 4 which precede 1 & 2 in running order and in fact feature the last seven stories from season two, plus the first from season three. Confused? Ultimately, it doesn't really matter, since thankfully there's no real reason to watch the stories in chronological order anyway. What is interesting is the development of the production standards. 63 sets 3 & 4, featuring the latter stories from season two, are far more rudimentary in terms of production quality. The sets are extremely small and sparse; The direction very slap-hazard; Camera work shoddy; Sound is extremely poor; and the acting is negligible. With no budget for editing or reshooting, all the actor's fluffs and goofs stayed in. Steed's character is far less suave and sophisticated then he became later during his familiar role alongside Mrs. Peel, and the relationship with Mrs. Gale in particular is at first downright hostile with very little warmth between the two. He seems to get along much better with Miss Venus Smith, a night club singer who he engages at various gigs to act as his eyes and ears. Venus is a very odd character, and played strangely, but enthusiastically by Julie Stevens. She looks about 12, sings like she's forty, and dresses like anything in between. She also seems extremely naïve and it's hard to imagine why Steed engages her to help him at all. The far more intelligent and elegant Mrs. Gale does eventually warm up to Steed, and in the season three stories where she is the exclusive companion to him, their relationship develops nicely and they become much warmer and closer to each other. The production values on season three are also much better than the earlier episodes. The sets became larger and more elaborate. The direction, lighting and sound improved greatly and the acting was much less wooden. Some editing was clearly allowed on these later stories, whereas the earlier ones clearly were broadcast as if they were live. There's a terrific blunder in "Six hands across a table," where Cathy is called "Ros" in one scene, and both actors realize the mistake, but keep going. An even better goof comes in "Concerto" when Nigel Stock forgets his lines completely and a very audible prompt is given from off camera. Terrific stuff. The quality of the DVD's is somewhat disappointing, even accounting for the age of the material and the production values mentioned above. It may not be the case, but it certainly appears that A&E have made no attempt whatsoever to re-master the original tapes, and the flaws, jumps, scratches and sound blips are too numerous to mention. Virtually every episode on 63 sets 3 & 4 are hampered by picture and sound flaws and defects. Things do improve for 63 1 & 2 and 64 1 & 2, but the quality is still disappointing. Mind you, it appears they have done nothing to clean up the Tara King episodes either! As a big fan of the series, I wouldn't even consider not having these episodes in my collection, but if you're looking for the wacky camp humor and the tele-fantasy of the Peel/King eras, these stories may not be for you.
In volume one, we have "The White Elephant" and fan favorite "The Little Wonders". In "The White Elephant", Steed and Cathy investigate the dissapearance of a rare albino elephant, and cage a group of ivory smugglers. This episode did have potential, but unfortunately its a bit average. It does however, feature an assortment of exotic animals including a monkey, leopard, but no elephant. In "The Little Wonders", Steed goes undercover as a vicar in order to infiltrate a gang of religous racketeers, while Cathy plays with dolls. A nice plot and writing make up for the average direction. Featuring the only kiss between Steed and Cathy, and Lois Maxwell (a.k.a. Miss Moneypenny) as a macinegun-toting nun. It's just a great deal of fun. In volume two, we have two of the best episodes. The effectively harrowing "The Wringer", and the delighfully enjoyable "Mandrake". In "The Wringer", six of seven agents using a certain pipeline have been killed, so Steed sets out to find the seventh. When he does, he is accused of killing the six agents and is subject to interrogation at the hands of "The Wringer". Extremly harrowing episode features a very different feel, outstanding performances, and masterful direction. Also, Cathy's surprising feelings for Steed are touching. In "Mandrake", mysterious grave undertakings at Cornwall cemetary lead Steed and Cathy to a sinister inheritance plot. This episode features all the best AVENGERS elements: a shifty-eyed (literally) diabolical mastermind, a mad doctor, merry widows, and tons of corpses. It could have been an Emma Peel episode. Also features one of the best fights of the series between Cathy and a thug in a graveyard. In volume three, there's "The Secrets Broker", and "The Trojan Horse". In "The Secrets Broker", it becomes apparent that a wily wine merchant and a devious medium are involved in a plot to sell ministry secrets. This episode is really very dull, as it focuses on an illicit love affair rather than on Steed and Cathy's investigations. In "The Trojan Horse", Steed gallops to the stables as he investigates a prominent stable that's become a haven for hoods in training, while Cathy becomes a syndicate bookie for a gambling orginization as it starts closing the book on prominant politicians. Cathy's bookie numbers delivery is alone worth the price of admission, and the script is also good. But nothing else really stands out here. Well, die-hard fans will be pleased with this delightful package, but be warned, the quality leaves abit to be desired. But if you're in the mood for intelligent storylines, kinky fashions, and brutal action THE AVENGERS '64 is what you're looking for!

Volume 9: (Disc 1) The Gadic Collection - Episode 98: Rating (4) The Best Laid Schemes - Episode 99: Rating (3) Invitation To Danger - Episode 100: Rating (4) Volume 10: (Disc 2) Legacy For The Saint - Episode 101: Rating (4) The Desperate Diplomat - Episode 102: Rating (3) The Organization Man - Episode 103: Rating (3) The Double Take - Episode 104: Rating (2) The Saint Set 5 starts out very strong, but finishes with some lackluster episodes. Still the collection is one of the better ones in the series. The best of the episodes have a no-nonsense approach, with a harder edge, solid action, and some excellent fight scenes. Overall, the writing is good, and not played for laughs. The bevy of beauties is better than average too, with a few ladies below age thirty for a change. As usual, look for Roger Moore's double in most second unit (location) shots. One note about the episode numbers. Though there are a few different listings for the program, the listing used is one that most closely matches the "broadcast order" sequence that A&E is issuing them in. Apart from the use of color film, there were other subtle changes to the show for this fifth season. Both Steed and Emma were given new apartments and Mrs. Peel a much more stylized wardrobe. The device of ending each story with the two leads driving off in a variety of vehicles was abandoned and instead a tag scene was used to introduce each story, where Steed informed his partner that they were needed in a variety of humorous ways. Each story title was also given a two-line subtitle. After completion of the first batch of 16, the American backers did provide finance for a further 16 but asked for both the subtitles and tag scenes to be dropped, and also requested that Mrs. Peel's wardrobe became more recognizably en vogue. After only 8 episodes were completed, producers Brian Clemens and Albert Fennell left the show after a disagreement and the new producers opted not to continue with Mrs. Peel and began their own interpretation of the show. It wasn't long before Clemens and Fennell were back in charge, but the 67 series ended with "Mission highly improbable," although Rigg was brought back in 1968 for the one-off "The forget me knot," to introduce her replacement Tara King. This episode is included in this release as a bonus episode. In terms of storylines, acting and the wonderful interplay between the two leads, there is little difference between this color season and the preceding black and white stories and the show had really reached its zenith by this point. Certainly in terms of popularity and ratings, it was never as successful again. Interestingly, several of these stories are in fact remakes of earlier episodes from the Mrs. Gale era. "The joker," "The correct way to kill," and "The $50,000 breakfast," are all remakes, whereas "The return of the Cybernauts," is a sequel to an earlier Steed/Mrs. Peel adventure. Fans of The Avengers will of course be delighted to have these discs, and I'd highly recommend them to any other fans of the sci-fi/fantasy genre, and indeed fans of the 60's spy format. If you've ever seen the dreadful movie featuring Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman, don't let that put you off. These stories are the real McCoy!

For one thing, there are no subtitles. Generally, with The Saint that is not a problem - except when the music drowns out certain key dialogue, or an actor does not speak clearly (star Roger Moore is known for his lazy drawal), and of course there are often times when a character will phrase something in British slang with which American audiences may be unfamiliar. But worse than that, there are mistakes on the boxes. Take Set 4. The box says there is a photo gallery and a history of the Saint included. There is not. Perhaps it is just as well. That History of The Saint is included on Set 2. Now I can't be misinterpreting it - it says "...nearly 100 Saint novels and stories followed, half of which have never been translated into English..." Huh? Are these people crazy or just incompetent? I have all the Saint books and stories and they are all in English. I am sure they were written in English. If they think they were written in some other language, why don't they identify what it is? And they also play fast and loose with the facts in the Roger Noore biography and filmography they provide. Do yourself a favor and just watch the shows and ignore their extra "bonus features". They are no bonus. _
VOLUME 7: The Counterfeit Countess (4) Simon And Delilah (2) Island Of Chance (4) VOLUME 8: The Gadget Lovers (3) A Double In Diamonds (3) The Power Artists (2) When Spring Is Sprung (4) The Saint, Set 4 is a collection with some good stories, and others that are not so well written, but are still entertaining. While there are some fine moments, I would rate Set 3 or 2 above this one. Still it is a must have for any big time fan of the "famous Simon Templar". What about future releases? I believe there are two episodes from 1967, six from 1968, and thirteen from 1969 left to be released. These include the two part features, "The Saint and the Fiction Makers" and "Vendetta for the Saint". It will be interesting to see how they are packaged. There are also 71 black and white episodes yet to be released on DVD as well. I hope the folks at A&E will keep working hard to ensure that, The Saint will be back! ... Read more | |

The only Black Beauty videos I like are the ones by actor Sean Bean & Mark Lester. I like the Black Beauty DVD by actor Sean Bean & the animated version one on DVD. Black quarter horses are used on ranches & cowboys & cowgirls have used some black horses to herd cattle & sheep. Black quarter horses are used for roping events including Calf Roping, Team Roping & Steer Roping. Black Quarter horses can also be used in a rodeo event called Steer Wrestling. On the back of my video cover on the Black Beauty video it goes: Based on the all-time This is like one world to all of us on a paramount picture of paramount home video. I & Black Beauty would be parted & before their reunion, Beauty would pass from owner to owner as a roping horse, Rodeo performer, steer wrestling at the Pheonix Rodeo, & horse wagon traveller. This video reminds me of a Tex Ritter film called "Trouble in Texas" because of the Rodeo & the dancing. If a black quarter horse was born from a mother horse who was a black quarter horse, I would be in the valley & I would pet & take care of the colt & the mother horse would rear up & jump for joy. Jumping for Joy is fun & roping & lassoing a calf for joy & the calf would be roped, wrestled, branded & doctored & the calf would have medicine in it's eye. Then the calf would scramper away. If Black Beauty was a National Finals Rodeo horse he would be the calf roping horse. This is one heck of a video I loved & Black Beauty would be in Las, Vegas Nevada at The NFR & he would be at The National Finals Rodeo at The Thomas & Mack Center & I would ride him in the calf roping event. When Honor Blackman (Mrs. Cathy Gale) left the series after season 3 to take up the lead role in the Bond movie "Goldfinger," the producers had already made the decision to start filming the series, moving it out of the TV studio and giving it a much glossier and dynamic feel. John Steed (Patrick MacNee), the debonair British government agent stayed on and his new partner was devised by the production team to be another tough, all-action girl with "Man Appeal." M-Appeal (geddit?) Elizabeth Shepherd was cast as Mrs. Emma Peel and two episodes were filmed before it was mutually agreed that she didn't meet the expectations of the production team. A quick replacement was sought and in stepped Diana Rigg. A TV legend was born. The relationship between Steed and Mrs. Gale had always been haughty to say the least. With the introduction of the widowed (or seemingly) Mrs. Peel, the relationship between the two leads became much closer with a great deal of sexual tension. Mrs. Peel was as intelligent, quick thinking and emasculated as her predecessor, and initially at least shared her penchant for leather outfits, but she was also certainly softer and more readily prepared to act as Steed's partner in their adventures. The stories were certainly becoming much more fantasy bound, and the use of diabolical masterminds and organizations with bizarre acronyms became the norm for the stories from this series on. The fantasy and sci-fi elements of the show were highlighted more than before and the fashions and design of the show took on a much more stylish and indeed 'stylized' look. The success of these elements was immediate, and huge ratings in the UK followed, plus overseas transmissions of the show followed for the first time. Such was their success indeed that another 26 episodes were soon commissioned, this time to be made in color. The stories have supposedly been digitally re-mastered for these DVD releases, and indeed the picture quality is pretty impressive, but there is still sparkle and dirt on the prints that may detract from the quality for some viewers. The 26 episodes are presented in the same order of their original UK transmission. Unfortunately, as with all the A&E Avengers releases, there are no extras at all. Not even production notes. However, there are menus included, which are nicely done. This for me is the very best season of the show, with great style and wit accompanying the excellent scripts, direction and production values. I'd certainly recommend this release to anyone.

On balance the positives outweigh the negatives. If you're a collector you will probably want this set, otherwise you may wish to consider The Saint Set 3 or 5 first. As usual, look for Roger Moore's double in most second unit (location) shots. One note about the episode numbers. Though there are a few different listings for the program, the listing used is one that most closely matches the "broadcast order" sequence that A&E is issuing them in. Episodes were not always released in the order they were produced or filmed. Fans of the Saint, are invited to view my other reviews of the series and a separate review of "The Fiction Makers".
