5-0 out of 5 stars flawless adaptation of this children's classic
I have a child. I have seen EVERY version of Peter Pan made -- many many times. Imagine my *delight* at seeing yet another version (sarcasm here) when the film came out in theaters. I have to admit, however, that I was immediately and continuously impressed by this superb adaptation of J.M. Barrie's classic children's tale, and bought the dvd as soon as it came out.

The cast is absolutely perfect. Jeremy Sumpter in the title role is wonderful, bringing a mischievous energy and boyishness to the part that has been amazingly and consistently missing (having been played by Mary Martin and Robin Williams). I'll also single out Rachel Hurd-Wood as Wendy and Jason Isaacs as Captain Hook/Mr. Darling for their great performances, but the entire cast is terrific.

The script is spectacular, exploring the subtext of the Pan story in a simple but profound way that puts film critics' shameless psycho-jargon to shame. It is the kernel of truth wrapped round a rousing adventure story -- replete with cruel pirates, brave Indians, sinister mermaids and loyal parents. Captain Hook's cruelty is evident, but takes place mostly off-screen and is never gory. This is a thinking (little) person's Peter Pan, certainly, drawing as it does on previously unexplored themes of the complexity of growing up, the consequences of our choices, and the acceptance of our children as they grow up, but it's also a gorgeous realization of Barrie's (and Wendy's) fantastical imagination.

DVD extras are quite entertaining and include: an alternate ending, deleted scenes, Jason Isaacs' video diary, "The Legacy of Pan" with Sarah Ferguson, and a number of micro-minifeaturettes on flying, sets, etc. Too bad it lacks a commentary track but otherwise lots of fun.

For Pan fans, highest possible recommendation;
for all others, see above.

5-0 out of 5 stars An endearing tale of everlasting childhood
I just got done watching the movie adaptation for Disney's "Peter Pan" and enjoyed it immensely. I've never been a fan of the animated version but I absolutely loved this recreation of the classic story about the adventures of Peter Pan, a boy who refuses to grow up, the intriguing storyteller and mother to the lost boys, Wendy, his pirate nemesis, Captain Hook, who seeks revenge from losing his right hand, which was fed to a crocodile that has since then continued to follow him with a ticking clock inside, wanting to taste more, and of course the magic that is Neverland. However, this new edition doesn't just focus on the greatness of staying young forever (or until you die) but it also shows the sadness of it too, giving this film more substance and meaning. It's definitely geared toward adult audiences who take pleasure in enchanting fantasies, like me, but it's certainly suitable and fun for the whole family.

Although this is based on the popular animation they are similar in plot yet details are slightly altered, giving this several interesting twists so that your uncertain as to what is going to happen next. The beginning even takes place before Nana (the dog nurse) captured Peter Pan's shadow, which I found to be very clever as I always wondered how that happened... Tinkerbell was dazzling as the jealous faery, the sets, or rather special effects were all magnificent, and the entire cast was superbly chosen. This is, in my opinion, one of the better films to come out of 2003 so come be a kid again and enter a world that shall bring that to the surface... That is until you wish to return home.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Movie I've Ever Seen
I loved this movie! I watched it 9 times in five days. I cannot get enough of Jeremy Sumpter. The effects are amazing. I think you would have to be crazy to dislike this movie. It is by far better than Hook. I hated that movie. I was watching it and fell asleep. But P.J. Hogan's version of this classic story kept me wide awake.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Adaptation!
I loved this movie! It really stayed with the storyline in J.M. Barrie's novel, but with a few wonderful extras. It was like the play comes to the bigscreen. I loved how the mermaids were portrayed, very creative. Jeremy Sumpter does excellent in his portrayal of Peter Pan, and his costume was very realistic. The soundtrack added to the magic and playfulness of the film. To see Peter and the Darling children fly the way they did was awesome and breathtaking. I can't stop watching this movie. I always felt that the story of Peter Pan was a love story between Peter and Wendy, and this movie reveals that with gentleness and wimsy. A wonderful movie all the way around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best movie I've seen in a REALLY long time!
Peter Pan is a really awesome movie! I'm right at that age where I think about guys a lot, so one big factor is that Jeremy Sumpter is really cute! But, I also really love the movie overall. It looks so real that sometimes I go off into huge dreams about visiting Neverland! The movie shows everything just as vivid and bright as I imagined!!! Great work, guys! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Romantic Comedy Ever
I have to agree that this movie is the best romantic comedy i've ever seen. The atmosphere is very light and the cast really Good and harmonious together. Julia Roberts is gorgeous and gives an unimitable performance, Rupert Everett is in one of his funniest characters, Cameron Diaz is a comedy queen, and
Dermot Mulroney plays indifferently. I Recommend this title on DVD: Essential For every collection and
especially for Romantic Comedy Addicts.
Synopsis, Plot and Characters:
Julianne (Julia Roberts) is a food critic who's devoted to her job and has had this best friend forever, Michael (Dermot Mulroney). After nine years of friendship, he phones her one night saying he's getting married in four days (To Kimmy, played by Cameron Diaz). Julianne has "Four days to break up the wedding, steal the brides' fella, and don't have a clue how to do it".
Romantic Comedy at its Culminant Point:
The scene of the boat in the movie is the first scene where we see Julianne and Michael Together alone. This moment brings on Romance to the film, in a way we've never seen. Greatly Directed by P.J Hogan (Muriel's Wedding), other scenes such as the confession, and the wedding seem to have an emotinal impact on the viewer.
The Music:
Also Featured in this film, is a sequence where all the cast sings "I say a little prayer".
The soundtrack is essential to buy with the DVD. Composed by James Newton Howard, the music gives an extra to the movie. You will listen to it over and over again, especially at Christmas. Why?... I don't Know!
At the end:
This is the first film i dare to say is the Best in all the romantic comedies i've seen. It shows a story which is very real and could happen to anyone: Choosing between Love & Friendship.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Also recommended if you loved this title: Only You (1994) / America's Sweethearts (2001)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Romantic Comedy
MY BEST FRIENDS WEDDING is a fun romantic comedy that stars Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Rupert Evert and Dermot Mulroney. The story involves Juliette (Julia Roberts), a food critic who realizes she loves her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney). Juliette finds out that Michael is getting married and decides to go to stop the wedding from happening, and to try to win him back. From the get go, Juliette is scheming to put a wedge between Michael and his fiancé Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). Her plans are often foiled and ultimately in the end, in a poignant moment, her friend George (Rupert Everett) asks her if she is chasing Michael and he is chasing Kimmy, who is chasing her? There are some real fun moments in the movie, like when Juliette pretends she is engaged to her gay friend in order to make Michael jealous. They end up singing "Say A Little Prayer" at breakfast. The movie is enriched by a great cast who have chemistry. Julia Roberts convincingly plays Juliette, who should be the enemy, but you end up rooting for her even through her hatched plans. Overall a fun romantic comedy fans of the genre should love.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT romantic comedy that can be watched over and over!!
I'm not the biggest Julia Roberts fan in the world, but I have yet to stumble across a film of hers which isn't purely great entertainment. And this little gem is no different. It's warm and fun, full of great laughs, sweet romantic moments, and irresistable characters. As Jules, Roberts sparkles with charm, and even though she screws up, you can't help but root for her in the end. Cameron Diaz is an absolute riot in this early role-I have yet to see her in a more charming, winning role. And Rupert Everett is simply flawless-his dry wit steals every scene he's in.

This isn't "great cinema", but as far as light romantic comedies go, you can't go wrong with this one. Sure it's light and fluffy, but it's not dumb, and it never fails to touch you, and make you laugh. Loaded with heaps upon heaps of unforgettable scenes, this is everything a romantic comedy should be. If you're thinking of renting a light flick over the weekend, My Best Friend's Wedding fits the bill.Sweet, fun, intelligent comedy at its' best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun
Jules Potter is in love with her bdest friend Micheal, but he is about to marry someone else. Jules will do anything to mess up his big day. This movie is loads of fun and laughs. When they break out into song in one scene, you can't help but sing along. I love this movie and watch it often. It's one of my favorites with Roberts next to Pretty Woman.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Best Friend's Wedding
The actors in this film are great BUT if you are looking for a love story with a happy ending this is not it. If I were in the mood for just a story this one is great. I happened to be looking for a happy ending. Yes I know about reality, but I was in the mood to see Julia Roberts get some happiness. What I was looking for was disappointing. Too bad this type of film does not have a WARNING label (just my opinion). This one goes in the same catagory as Casablanca (Humphrey Bogart) and Roman Holiday (Audrey Hepburn).
Excellent talent and scenery. Just not my idea of a love story. ... Read more

Despite the success of My Best Friend's Wedding, Aussie director P.J. Hogan certainly hasn't gone Hollywood. Unconditional Love, co-written with his wife and fellow filmmaker Jocelyn Moorhouse, is a deeply eccentric concoction that ranges from campy comedy to murder mystery. If the whole thing doesn't really come off, it does have much that is funny, giddy, or simply weirder than all-get-out. Kathy Bates enjoys herself as a discarded wife who impulsively flies to England to attend the funeral of her idol, a beloved singer--Jonathan Pryce, in glorious sequined form. Meeting his "valet" (read:secret gay lover), Rupert Everett, she determines to find the dead man's murderer. It's hard to get the tone right on this kind of movie, but it's also easy to like a film that finds time for tributes to Barry Manilow (hey, Hogan rehabilitated ABBA in Muriel's Wedding) and the reassuring spirit of Julie Andrews. --Robert Horton ... 5-0 out of 5 stars CANT SMILE WITHOUT YOU
What can one say about a movie that features Julie Andrews singing GETTING TO KNOW YOU on a turbulent-ridden plane AND at the funeral of a worldwide singing sensation? AND Barry Manilow joining the cast for the finale's showstopper? It may all seem mushy, maudlin and over the top, and it is! But this little gem is a delightfully entertaining movie, full of smashingly good performances. Oscar winner Kathy Bates shines as Grace Beasley, a housewife with a dream of becoming a singer, a husband who leaves her after 25 years and a trip to England for the funeral of her murdered singing idol, Victor Fox. Bates hits all the right notes and is utterly charming.
Rupert Everett as the singer's unknown lover is at first all brutish and loutish, but once we learn a little more about him, he becomes the film's ironic hero. Everett is very good in this role.
Dan Aykroyd plays Bates' husband with all the timidity and self-serving bravado that explains the lack of adventure in their lives.

Jack Noseworthy, a very underrated young actor, portrays their son, who has also left his wife (we'll get to her later!).
Peter Skaasgard (Shattered Glass) plays the window washer with a secret. His youthful innocence is appropriately fitting.
Lynn Redgrave and Stephanie Beacham are remarkable as Victor's obnoxious and grabbing sisters. Their scenes are few, but they are brilliant!!
Jonathan Pryce (who got his start in Miss Saigon) is wonderful as the Tom Jones/Elvis Presley clone, whose murder leads Bates and Everett to find his killer--the Crossbow Killer.
The movie belongs, however, to the delightful Meredith Eaton, who plays Bates' daughter-in-law. Eaton is a dwarf (really) and she has a beautiful face and is so full of energy and oomph she lights up the screen. Her take off on the red-raincoated dwarf from 'DOn't Look Now" is absolutely hilarious. I hope we see more of Ms. Eaton in the future---she is brilliant!
This movie is a pleasant surprise, and is outrageously entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Total Wish Fulfillment
"Unconditional Love" with Kathy Bates, Dan Akroyd Rupert Everett and Meredith Eaton is one of the most delightful films I've seen in a long time. Jonathan Price plays international singing sensation Victor Fox (what a voice) murdered in Chicago, plunging the English-speaking world into mourning, and his #1 Fan Kathy Bates into a serious of adventures so charming and fun -- I kept exclaiming "What a GREAT story!" She goes to England for her favorite singer's funeral, meets his family and his best friend/valet (actually lover) and ends up understanding who Victor really was, becomes embroiled in everyone's affairs, returns to Chicago with Rupert and attempts to catch the murderer of the singer -- hilarity ensues! Happy endings all around -- fantastic singing of old favorites, Barry Manilow and Julie Andrews in cameos. My heart was full after seeing it. I think any "homemaker" would feel identification with the charming Kathy and wish-fulfillment in her courage and adventures -- she even gets to fulfill a life-long dream of singing to a large group of people -- and WHAT a voice SHE has. Quotable quote: "A life lived in fear is not much fun." This emboldens Kathy to reach out to the world, not just observe life on TV, but to go places, do dangerous things, make new friends, embrace the world and in so doing, be insulted, console, problem solve, support others, laugh and lead others to triumph through her empathy, sincerity, creativity and loyalty to her friends. She was the perfect example of someone being "lifted out of her milieu." The B. Manilow tune "I can't laugh without you, can't cry without you, if you only knew what I'm going through, ..." is still playing in my head! Ignore the critics and enjoy this movie.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good on certain conditions
Part of the fun of Unconditional Love is that it doesn't stick to any one genre, but this also hurts the movie, as well, since you never know quite what you're watching and aren't allowed to delve so into it that you "love" it. While the film feels a little uneven and slower-than-normal at times, not to mention the ending is ridiculous, the characters that adorn Unconditional Love bring the idea of the film to life. You might not get anything out of this show, but its purpose seems to be to open your eyes to those who are different... and challenge you to go out and do something you normally are terrified of doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie
Why this movie didn't make it to theaters is beyond me. It's great entertainment with super characters and an original storyline. And Kathy Bates is her usual outstanding self.

Great story, great fun. I find myself smiling whenever I tell others about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beware if nudgets ub red raubciats!
.
A great film everyone should see!

This film will give you reason to be afraid of midgets in red raincoats for the rest of your life!

For reference to the above, and for yet another scary thrill, I recommend the film "Don't Look Now", in which we first discover why we should live in mortal fear of a "midget in a red raincoat" ... Read more

Ever since the late '70s when the Australian New Wave was in full surge, DownUnder directors have delivered movies that often hit you like news from another planet. Offbeat characters, weird narrative twists, and a tartmixture of laughs and catastrophe--this is the juice that fuels such flicks as Proof, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Strictly Ballroom, Heavenly Creatures, and most certainly Muriel's Wedding. Directed by P.J.Hogan (who would go on to helm the Hollywood hit My Best Friend's Wedding),this little gem follows tradition by featuring an authentic misfit: Muriel(Toni Collette), a great overweight horse of a girl obsessed with gettingmarried and the music of ABBA. Appropriately, we first meet Muriel at awedding, all trussed up in a leopardskin number she's boosted for theoccasion. When her snotty peers insist that she give up the bridal bouquet tosomeone who might actually get hitched, when one of the guests turns out to be a clerk in the very store where Muriel ripped off her outfit--you gottalaugh, she's such an unmitigated mess. A loser, her philandering politician father (Bill Hunter) calls her--along with his doormat wife and his othercouch-potato offspring. But this movie's no exercise in geek-bashing. AsMuriel takes up with feisty Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths) and moves from PorpoiseSpit to the big city, her good-hearted grin and zest for life draw us indespite hilarious gaffes and mishaps. (Making out with a boy for the firsttime, Muriel suddenly finds herself awash in styrofoam: the oaf has unzippedthe beanbag chair instead of her skin-tight leather pants.) Muriel's Wedding covers territory Hollywood would banish from a comedy--Rhonda's cancer, thesuicide of Muriel's mother, a marriage of convenience to an arrogantathlete--yet, like its heroine, it never loses its sense of humor, its will to move on to whatever good thing might happen next. Everyone in theidiosyncratic cast is terrific, but it's Toni Collette's Dancing Queen whomakes Muriel's Wedding a cinematic celebration you won't forget. --KathleenMurphy ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the finest movies I've ever seen
Muriel Heslop is a young woman who dreams of getting married and moving far away from her boring life in Porpoise Spit, Australia. Unfortunately, even after her dreams do come true (and changes her name to Mariel), she discovers that while she has gained everything she has desired, she has also alienated herself from her family and her best friend Rhonda, and by the end of the film goes back to being good-ol' Muriel Heslop.

The performances in this film were excellent, especially Toni Collette in the lead (who gained a few pounds for her role), and future Oscar nominee Rachel Griffiths as Rhonda, a woman suddenly sticken with a potentially fatal illness.

Despite it's seemingly simple plot, it's a suprisingly rich and complex story. It's about a family on the verge of insanity, the value of friendship, and is a fable with a positive message: Be yourself, and you will like yourself for it.

Whether you like comedy or drama, you'll absolutely fall in love with this movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unconventional comedy
This is one of those comedies that will make you laugh hysterically and then shut the audience up with a sudden tragedy. The story follows Muriel (Collette), an overweight ugly duckling who is ridiculed by her friends and her father but finds solace in ABBA songs and best friend Griffiths. Moving from her home town of Porpoise Spit she begins to find a new life for herself.

Fortunately this rites-of-passage drama doesn't lay it on heavy with the sentimentality. This brings about a conclusion that's nothing short of depressing but still poignant. The comedy is wonderfully crass, especially from Muriel's friends from Porpoise Spit and the sheer gaudiness of the whole movie is beautifully carried by all concerned. When Muriel's bridesmaids waddle up the aisle to an ABBA song, or Collette and Griffiths jubilently belt out tunes at a karaoke bar, you'll be laughing.

Given this, it's rare to find such comedy that will bring you crashing down to earth with suicide, cancer and an unhappy arranged marriage. This is one of those movies that will never make you cry; it will make you sympathise with its characters. It's certainly a great gift of Hogan's that he manages to pull both genres off so well at the same time.

But this wouldn't be half as good if it wasn't for Collette and Griffiths' magnificently crazy, emotional performances. 'Muriel's Wedding' should also be cheered for the fact that it doesn't succumb to typical Hollywood glitz and glamour. Muriel remains overweight throughout the whole movie, there's no 'Pygmalion'-like twist, it's the person that changes and perhaps that's what the movie is about. Completely unmissable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Porpoise Spit Sheila's Move It On Over To Big City Sidney!
Australian writer/director P.J. Hogan's modern masterpiece, "Muriel's Wedding" serves up wedding cake with wheelchairs, confetti with cancer, ABBA with ardor, sweetness with stealing, and more importantly friends with foes in this one of a kind black comedy.

"Muriel's Wedding" not only launched P.J. Hogan's directing and writing career but gave a leg up to Toni Collette who agreed to pack on 30 lbs. for the once in a lifetime role of Muriel Heslop, citizen of small town Porpoise Spit, Australia. Rachel Griffiths from "Six Feet Under" also got her first shot playing Muriel's friend, wild child and general black sheep of Porpoise Spit, Rhonda Epinstalk. Rhonda and Muriel escape the small town and small people of Porpoise Spit for the big city lights and acceptance of Sidney, Australia.

A low self-esteemed wedding obsessed wannabe, Muriel lies, cheats and steals her way to her ultimate goal. Getting HITCHED! At least that's what Muriel thinks she desires, but all she wants is to truly be accepted by friends, family and her WHOLE world. Muriel's whole existence is based on "Why Can't It Be Me? Why Can't I Be The One?"

Muriel's parents, Bill and Betty Heslop, played by Aussie actors Bill Hunter and Jeanie Drynan both turn in excellent and believable performances. Especially Jeanie Drynan as the put upon mother who unconditionally loves her children and only wants to think the best of them.

Also featured are four judgemental and witchy women who are Muriel and Rhonda's former high school classmates. Some of the greatest comedy scenes take place between the six gals and are hilarious!

The film ALSO has a GREAT 70's soundtrack with the likes of:

Sugar Baby Love by The Rubettes
We've Only Just Begun by The Carpenters
Tide Is High by Blondie
Waterloo by ABBA
I Go to Rio by Peter Allen
I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself by Dusty Springfield
Dancing Queen by ABBA
I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do by ABBA
and Happy Together by The Turtles

I highly recommend this film not just as a "chick flick" but a great and terrific movie that examines not only the comedic side of life but of true friendship, love and death...

Happy Watching And Go Porpoise Spit High!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Movie
Toni Collette plays an awkward, clumsy woman named Muriel who fantasizes about getting married and listens to ABBA. Living in Porpoise Spit, she has no life of her own. She, as well as her family, are mentally abused by the father, a philandering politician who will do anything to gain popularity. The group of women that she hangs around with, don't want her around because she doesn't live up to their standards--beautiful and stupid. While on vacation, she meets with a high school friend, Rhonda.
Before her performance in "Six Feet Under", Rachel Griffiths plays Rhonda, a high school friend of Muriel's who is transformed into a swan. The popular quartet accepts her but she rejects them because of their cruel treatment of her in high school. She and Muriel move to Sidney, and Muriel starts anew. But when Rhonda is hit with cancer, Muriel goes back into her dreams of being a bride. Muriel does marry but for the wrong reasons. Muriel is forced to confront herself, her family, and the people in her life that hurt her emotionally.
This movie deals with acceptance and Muriel had to accept that there were some things you could and couldn't change.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite movie

Great work, guys! ... Read more

My Best Friend's Wedding
One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s, My Best Friend's Wedding not only gave Julia Roberts a delightful vehicle for her crowd-pleasing comeback, but it further distinguished itself by avoiding the conventional plotting of the genre. Julia plays a prominent Chicago restaurant critic whose best friend (Dermot Mulroney) is a former lover from her college days with whom she'd made a binding pact: if neither of them were married by the age of 28, they'd marry each other. Just when they're about to reach the deadline of their agreement, Mulroney arrives in Chicago to introduce Roberts to his seemingly perfect fiancée (Cameron Diaz) and announce their wedding in just three days. That leaves the shocked Julia with just three short days to sabotage the wedding and marry the man she now realizes she's loved all along. With potential heartbreak waiting in the wings, she'll either get what she wants or pay the price for her selfish behavior, and Ronald Bass's cleverly constructed screenplay keeps us guessing to the very end. Rupert Everett scored rave reviews for his scene-stealing performance as Robert's gay friend who goes along with her scheming (but only so far), and even as she makes her character's needy desperation disarmingly appealing, Roberts wisely allows Diaz to capitalize on her charming time in the spotlight. As the romantic outcome remains uncertain, the viewer is held in a state of giddy suspense, and director P.J. Hogan pulls off some hilarious scenes (like a restaurant full of people singing the Dionne Warwick hit "I Say a Little Prayer") that could easily have fallen flat in the hands of a less talented filmmaker. It's no surprise that this was one of the box-office smashes of 1997. --Jeff Shannon

Stepmom
Though Stepmom was dismissed as a contender in the 1998 Oscar race, it's worth giving a second chance to this rather cogent, sharp-tongued look at second chances. Susan Sarandon's performance as a mom about to be replaced by her ex-husband's new girlfriend (played by Julia Roberts) has a lot of bite, and it's a shame the script opted to marginalize and trivialize her plight in its final reel. Initially, the rancor that passes between divorced mom Jackie (Sarandon) and trendy fashion photographer Isabel (Roberts) rings true, aided by the sincerity of Jackie's ex-husband Luke (Ed Harris) and the emotional plight of their children, who have the most to lose in their parents' divorce. As the drama makes clear, the kids are the real victims in the agony that ensues between old and new love.Director Chris Columbus, who is adept at showing familial chaos (he directed Mrs. Doubtfire and Home Alone) with a sanitized minimum of lingering emotional damage, actually manages to dig a trifle deeper than usual in exploring the jealousy and hurt that occur when the baton is passed between a birth mom and the younger wife who steps into her shoes. Stepmom fortunately manages to touch on that chord--showing how an ambitious woman might feel hampered by the responsibility of children just because she's fallen in love with their dad--as well as the haunting grief that it causes their birth mom. It's an issue that haunts millions of second wives everywhere, and while Roberts conveys the confusion of being taken for granted in the melee that follows, it's Sarandon who walks off with the film. She's relentless in her fury, and everyone else in the film--the generally excellent Harris included--is sideswiped. It's just a shame that Hollywood once again wimps out in the end, solving the problem by giving Sarandon a terminal illness. Instead of allowing Jackie and Isabel's relationship to unfold on something less than a high note, the movie has to quell its best thing with a false payoff because it doesn't know what to do with real life. --Paula Nechak ... The Wedding Planner
The good news is, yes, Jennifer Lopez can do comedy. In The Wedding Planner Lopez is Mary, a lovable woman who believes "those who can't do, teach. Those who can't wed, plan!" Her slapstick moments are lighthearted and she is spot-on as the controlling, compulsive-yet-sweet planner. The bad news is Lopez didn't get much of a vehicle in which to test drive her newfound comedic skills.Mary's life is her career. Planning other people's weddings takes all of her time, leaving no room for a love life of her own. Her only personal life is a Scrabble club, to which she and her father (Alex Rocco, whose wandering Italian accent is painful to listen to) belong. When a handsome young doctor (Matthew McConaughey) saves her from a collision with a runaway dumpster (really, it works), she is instantly wooed by his quiet charm. Too bad he's the fiancé of Mary's biggest client, Fran (played winningly by Bridgette Wilson-Sampras), the job that will launch Mary as a partner in her firm. The main problem with this film is that no one wants to hurt anyone else's feelings. Everyone is just so gosh-darn nice. In a subplot, Mary's father is trying to arrange her marriage to just the nicest Italian boy. Gee, he's sweet. Golly, Fran is nice. Is there ever a way out of this mess and to leave everyone smiling? Yet, there is a touch of old-fashioned romance to this wholesome film, which can only be described as "cute." And while things may unfold in a predictable manner, The Wedding Planner is still lighthearted fun of the sort that inspires dreamy romantic thoughts. --Jenny Brown

Quite a list of perspectives on this review list! I think you can't take it too seriously which is assumed with the introduction segment setting the tone. But this is a fun and funny movie. I suspect many people can relate to it as it most likely touches a cord in a number of us. Enjoy it for a fun, entertaining night with a video. You'll be humming the songs for days!

1-0 out of 5 stars Just a comedy but scary what it says about women in the '90s
This movie really bothered me. I like romantic comedies, I liked Pretty Woman, but this movie just played like it was written by a man who thinks he knows women well...but doesn't. Why do we have to see Julia Roberts falling apart because she's not married? why the implication that if she didn't take her job so seriously (more "wifely") she would be happier? why the implication that Cameron Diaz, the one who gets the guy, has made the better decision, to quit college and her dreams of being an architect to get married? (why would she need to quit working anyway even if she did get married? why does her future spouse want her to do so?) If social subtexts don't bother you enjoy this movie but if you can't quite turn off the reality meter then give this one a miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice movie!
This movie is really great! I liked it! Julia is actually a wonderful actress and this is one of her best movies. The story is fun and very exciting. Cameron is also very good on it!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of My Favorites
This is one of my favorite top five movies of all times. It will make you laugh, cry, angry, etc. Although Julia Roberts was shallow and nasty at times, it was still a funny movie and I actually felt sympathy for her at times. In a way I wish she would've gotten the guy, but the movie wouldn't be the same. It's a movie about letting go of those that you love and not getting everything you want. It reflects the fact that not everything turns out the way you want it to be in life. Some things are meant to be and some just aren't! I loved Julia Roberts in this and would recommend it to all of her fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars I just loved this movie!

America's Sweethearts
America's Sweethearts is just the kind of romantic froth that makes for pleasant viewing on a lazy, rainy day. While Julia Roberts, John Cusack, and Catherine Zeta-Jones offer high-wattage marquee value, costar and cowriter Billy Crystal reworks Singin' in the Rain for latter-day Hollywood, where estranged superstars Gwen (Zeta-Jones) and Eddie (Cusack) reluctantly promote their latest movie by pretending their messily disputed relationship is still going strong. The studio chief (Stanley Tucci) is desperate for a hit, so he hires a seasoned publicist (Crystal) to orchestrate a press junket that will cast everyone in a profitable light. The catch: The director (Christopher Walken) has abducted his own film in an act of artistic extortion, and Gwen's sister and longtime assistant Kiki (Roberts) is the true object of Eddie's desire.Chaos ensues at the luxury hotel where the junket is scheduled, and America's Sweethearts pokes easy fun at the cynical machinery that keeps Hollywood running. Quotable quips are delivered in abundance, and while Zeta-Jones is readily convincing as a bitchy narcissist, Roberts effortlessly steals the show with her trademark charms. All of which makes America's Sweethearts lightly entertaining, even though it never rises (like Roberts's earlier Notting Hill) to the level of classic romantic comedy, hampered by a script that too often substitutes easy laughs for ripe satirical invention, flashing a phony grin when it should be baring its fangs. --Jeff Shannon
