4-0 out of 5 stars Pentagon Papers
I've watched it twice, just to see if my overall appreciation of the film would improve, and it did. It's a stronger, worthier film than I thought.

In this film, we see Daniel Ellsberg make two crucial decisions: first, he stops supporting the Viet Nam War as a winnable war after visiting the country itself and being exposed to the real casualties, plus startling on-scene opinion; and then he returns home and gets his influential boss at Rand (played by Alan Arkin) to slip him a copy of some top-secret papers, Classified, that sum up America's involvement in the conflict from day-one. Reading these papers disillusions him, and he wants the papers exposed. No one with political clout will assist him in getting the information out, and David Ellsberg contemplates being a traitor to his country by releasing the papers to the public any way he can. He and his beatnik pal, Russo (played by Paul Giamatti), start making photocopies galore...and Ellsberg even gets his kids--from a broken marriage--to help out, until their mother finds out what is going on.

James Spader depicts the growing pains of Daniel Ellsberg with high expertise, coolly making this film about shocking political decisions, yes, but also about a man growing up all over again. Claire Forlani plays the woman he turns to after his divorce, even though, at the start, their views on the Viet Nam War are opposite. She comes to his aid, after abandoning him, when she discovers his epiphany. The two leads are strong together, sneaking around, making plans to funnel the papers to a major newspaper, watching the news to see if Ellsberg will be suspected as the "leak"--and once Ellsberg is in real trouble, we see how loyal Forlani's character--Patricia--can be.

Some of the war info squeezed into the script, so we can know what all the fuss is really about while enjoying the human-interest element, does suggest that this film is in some ways merely a surface-treatment of a complex, decades-spanning problem. But that is countered by the fairly successful look at Daniel Ellsberg and his few allies, and what they went through. ... Read more

Before Pulp Fiction put him back on the mainstream culturalradar, John Travolta lent his considerable charms (and, somewhat surprisingly, cowrote the script) to this wholly schizophrenic straight-to-video L.A. gangland drama. The opening expository scenes are a bit of a drag, but be sure to hang on; what starts out as a painfully earnest paean to these troubled streets abruptly (and delightfully) switches gears to become a viscerally bruising action flick, as Travolta's troubled social worker goes undercover to save a wholesome teen from a murderous street gang.Second-half highlights include a terrific use of found locations, a completely dumbfounding suspension bridge stunt destined to wear out rewind buttons everywhere, and a flamboyant drug lord (played by Law & Order hunk Benjamin Bratt) whose swinging bachelor pad includes a decidedly nonregulation alligator pit. The DVD presentation includes a nicely rendered full-screen picture, production notes, and cast bios. Not likely to be featured in any future Travolta career retrospective, but a fun film nonetheless. --Andrew Wright ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars nice movie
I brought this movie strickly on impulse from my work. It cost me $2.99, brand new (dvd). I'd never seen it before, but was very impressed. I know it is a TV movie, but nonetheless, it is very watchable. I can watch it several more times, in fact. After watching movies like these, you gain respect for independent films.

There are bad reviews for this movie out there, but I say hire it out and make up your own mind. A Travolta classic!

2-0 out of 5 stars not a horrible movie
though it has a lot of faults..a lot though the performance of Travolta saves this from being a bomb..though his social worker man turns out to become a acion hero saving a kid from danger...not a horrible movie but not a great one

5-0 out of 5 stars chains of gold
this is a very nice movie with a lot of action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent,Underrated Travolta Film!!
In one of his lesser known films, John Travolta does an excelleent job potraying a social worker trying to rescue a kid from a brutal, vicious Crack Street Gang.I thought the film was excellent,John Travolta along with Marilu Henner did a superb acting job!!

2-0 out of 5 stars From social worker to Schwarzenegger
Chains of Gold is one of those movies John Travolta did during his career slump. This one has Travolta as Scott Barnes, a social worker who rescues a kid from a drug-running street gang. Hector Elizondo has a part as Lieutenant Ortega. Silly plot certainly doesn't help this forgettable action movie. Director Rob Holcomb moved on to direct the excellent TV movie 'Finding the Way Home'. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Please. Please, Please, put the SMDM on dvd....
Oh Man, how long have I waited for this. I loved the SMDM back in the day. I guess I was around 9 or 10 when it first came on. From the pilot episode to the last one, I was hooked. Did you know that the UK and other parts of Europe already have the SMDM and also the Bionic Woman on dvd? My question is, Why havent we got these classic shows on dvd already? These are American shows. We should have gotten these first. Dont get me wrong, I have nothing against our British friends for having them, but why neglect us here in America? I just hope that Universal wakes up and discovers that there IS an American market for these classic shows to be put on dvd format. If they can put CRAP like Friends and Celebrity Mole, and other lame shows on dvd, why not great, classic shows like the SMDM on dvd? Im still waiting....

5-0 out of 5 stars The Six Million Dollar Man Will be Reincarnated
I am 14. I know 14 is a little young to know about thes series, but I saw a few reruns on tv. I really hope the studio will release this title on DVD. I would like to see Steve Austin ( Lee Majors ) in the crash and be turned into a machine. The Stunts are outstanding. I am also of interest of The Bionic Woman. Unfourntaly None of these titles are released on DVD yet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like they used to
Although I'm a 25 year old Israeli woman, born after the Vietnam war was over, and halfway around the world, this series touched me in a way most dramas didn't. Perhaps it was Dana Delaney's excellent dramatic acting, or the music, or any of the wonderful features of the talented crew that made this beautiful series possible, but I get the feeling that although I like new drama series like ER or The West Wing, I feel that John Wells has learned well, but not enough. China Beach had a certain something that other drama series did not. I'm no expert, so I can't put my finger on it, but whatever it was, I haven't seen it since, and I suspect I'll never see it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars DANA DELANEY IS CHINA BEACH ! ! ! ! ! !
This closest thing to a perfect show is my favorite series of all time. The actors were always excellent (w/the exception of Robert Picardo and Megan Gallagher....I don't know, but I just didn't like them very much). The show could not have been made w/out Dana Delaney. If it had it wouldn't be half as good. She is Colleen McMurphy...McMurphy is China Beach...Dana Delaney is the key. Her performance both comic and drmatic are so true to life. Her emotions of the war are so real it scares you into thinking that this is too real. She has such a wonderful gift. I hope we see more of her real soon.

WHY IS THIS SERIES NOT ON DVD?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I find this a serieous omission. If anyone hears about it coming to DVD, please let me know by email! Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Have tried for years to find this on video
I, too, would buy every episode of this terrific series. I agree Dana Delaney was great, but, in my view, it was really an ensemble show. Marg Helgenberger as KC and Brian Wimmer as Boonie and Michael Boatman and Robert Picardo and Troy Evans and Concetta Tomei and absolutely everyone else were just terrific. Also, the production values were excellent. I remember sitting there watching and noticing how fabulous the lighting and cinematography were. I don't think any other television show has touched me as much as this one. Please, please bring this out on DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Writing, Great Acting...Give Us This Series On DVD!!!
I was a slow starter on this series when it originally aired. ABC basically killed any chances of the series picking up steam in the ratings by allowing "China Beach" to be shifted from one time slot to another, making it harder to keep up with. What a shame, the story lines and rich characters were worthy of much better treatment than they received.

It wasn't until a couple of years after ABC pulled the plug that A&E aired the entire series several times. I was able to finally see all the episodes I missed and I was HOOKED!! I truly believe that "China Beach" represents some of the best writing and acting I have ever seen in a television program--a very worthy effort that was never truly appreciated by the network PTB.

This series received tons of critical acclaim and was nominated for and received several Emmys. To my knowledge, it was never released in a VHS format--but it begs to be considered for release on dvd. PLEASE give the fans of "China Beach" the chance to see this series in format worthy of the talent that it represents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent drama about Vietnam nurses, doctors, soldiers
This is the popular and much acclaimed "China Beach" TV series. Dana Delany has the role of her life playing Colleen McMurphy, a dedicated triage nurse in Vietnam. This is not a war action movie, but rather a drama about the lives of Vietnam soldiers and the nurses, Red Cross "Donut Dollies", and USO entertainers who are there for them. Dana Delaney is stunning in the role of McMurphy -- this alone would make this a classic. In addition, the deep respect and understanding shown for the Vietnam GI's sets this apart from most of the other Vietnam movies. This is a movie that people who weren't in Vietnam should watch to get a better appreciation for the men and women who served there. For those who were there, this movie is a token of respect and appreciation for your service. ... Read more
