3-0 out of 5 stars UNFIT FOR FAMILY VIEWING
I was disappointed with the contents of this movie. The story was entertaining but the vulgarity and swearing was uncalled for. I am sure that the Mountain Men's language left little to be desired but I believe that in this movie it was not needed. There were a couple of sexual oriented scenes that made this movie unfit for family viewing. The era of the Mountain Men is a period in our history that we should be proud of and we should be able to share it with our families. It is hard for a parent to want our our kids to expierence the beautiful scenery and adventure of this movie and not be worried about the next scene. I own other movies of the Mountain Men era and this is the first one that I can truly say is not for family viewing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Beginning of Accuracy
The Movie "The Mountain Men" was a great beginning in trying to display some form of Accuracy of the way life was during the fur trade era. I would like it remade with actual Indian actors, and with a longer story line. I agree it could have been made without the swearing even though the Mountain Men of old probably had a foul mouth. However, for home entertainment, it's not necessary. The movie is great at this time for anyone's collection, and until it's redone, or another of better quality is released.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Sit down, flatlander."
Hawken muzzle loaders. Plugs of chewing tobacco the size of your fist. Buffalo robes. Beaver pelts. Jugs of whiskey.

But enough about last night's party.

Director Richard Lang's THE MOUNTAIN MEN is a rough-and-tumble yarn depicting the fur trapping industry's final days in the pristine splendor of the northern Rockies. Even in such a remote region, the demand back East for top hats made of beaver skin resulted in the virtual extinction of the buck-toothed rodents in their mountain habitats; on top of that, silk hats were rapidly becoming the fashion craze, creating even more of a hardship on the gritty mountain men who trapped along countless streams and rivers, searching for what remained of the elusive beaver population.

It was a hard life, predicated on an individual's ability to survive in a harsh environment based on his wits and his bare hands. Interaction with other people was rare--the need to get along with neighboring Indian tribes a must. And infrequently, perhaps once every two or three years, the trappers would unite at a "rendezvous" to trade their pelts for cash and let off a little steam. To say that such a gathering was rowdy and violent is kind of like saying turtles have shells.

Charlton Heston "shines" (a little mountain man lingo, there) as fur trapper Bill Tyler, a quiet man who only wishes to be left alone so he can find that last valley just teeming with beaver. But there's a problem: while fighting off a band of Blackfoot bent on stealing his horses and supplies he attracts the company of a young squaw (Victoria Racimo) who happens to be married to a chief with a very serious attitude (Stephen Macht). Thus Tyler and his new companion are forced to run, and run, and run some more to escape the warrior's wrath.

While Heston is solid in his role, Brian Keith absolutely steals the show as crusty Henry Frapp. Henry, a friend of Tyler's, is a cantankerous, foul-mouthed, fun-loving old coot who vividly breathes life into the mountain man persona. Keith dominates every scene he's in, and he's fun to watch.

Heck, THE MOUNTAIN MEN is fun to watch. The screenplay, incidentally, was written by Heston's son, Fraser, who obviously did his homework concerning this fascinating aspect of the Old West. Grab a plug of tobacco and enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Baudy and Entertaining
This show has a fairly good story line, fine acting and stunning scenery. I saw this show when it was first released and the one aspect of the picture that I think I loved the most is the dialect. This was the first time I ever heard 'Uncle Bill'(Brian Keith)swear! The movie might not be historically accurate, or maybe it is...I don't really know or care. I grew up in Wyoming, and the way Tyler and Frapp carry on as the grumpy, mangy, grizzled old farts that they are just seemed natural to me. The one scene when Tyler happens upon Frapp in the middle of a frozen lake(Tyler has written off Frapp after seeing him 'killed'and subsequently scalped by Indians) and remarks on the scalping "Well, it sure must have smarted some"...Frapp agrees and displays a broad patch missing hair...Take me Bill Tyler..Take me!!! HEH!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining and Instructive....for Muzzleoaders
This movie is very entertaining and very instructive for muzzleloading enthusiasts, who participate in shooting and tomahawk throwing contests at annual rendez-vous. It shows several crucial aspects of that rough life of independent, freedom-loving, beaver trappers, or mountain men. This movie may also help to promote the sale of St. Louis Hawken rifles (Heston = Chairman of the NRA) and to raise the interest in a relatively unknown historical era towards the end of the fur trade, between, say, the Lewis and Clark Expedition by the Corps of Discovery in 1803-06 and the Fall of the Alamo in 1836, a simpler historical period, clearly far before the Civil War and its gutwrenching questions raised by the abolition of slavery, and the following unreal "cowboy" wild west fights between ranchers and settlers, as portrayed by John Wayne. The somewhat flat story of this movie "Mountain Men," of "bad indians" versus "good (white male) beaver trappers," partially fighting about an indian squaw, plays out in the Rocky Mountains near the Grand Tetons (Jackson Hole, Wisconsin), just south of the border between Canada and the USA. Some individual special fights and flights are quite well executed, e.g., a jump from a cliff in a foaming river and the portrayal of very old, but still lascivious "Jim Bridger" in his suit of steel at the rendez-vous is priceless. But, don't go to see the movie for the story, but go to see it for the bawdy and rough life style of these free-spirited mountain men, their muzzleloaders and tomahawks and their acoutrements. That life is far less idyllic and Arcadian than the 1837 drawings of Alfred Miller. See it for the spectacular scenery and vistas of the Rocky Mountain. And, of course, see it for Charleston Heston, as a fairly credible 50-year old "Lion in Winter," who, initially reluctantly, but soon convincingly, hooks up with a "trophy wife" in the form of a pretty indian squaw. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It NEVER ceases to amaze me
This series, and something as innocent as the "Our Gang/Little Rascals" series are American popular cultural TREASURES!It never ceases to amaze me how some people "go out of their way" to look for racism. These people keep agitating & will never let things die down, and put things behind us.

In this case, and the Little Rascals series, somereviewers are looking for a platform & an audience to preach to.

Buy this series (and the Little Rascals for your elementary schoold kids)YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm inspired to do a kung fu website
As the title of this says, I am inspired to create a Kung Fu website dedicated to the show (I've already started the design). There are some available, but none cover it from the perspective I have. There are many episodes where Caine shows his displeasure of eating meat, and in the first season he even converted two different characters to being vegetarian. And in the third season, Caine finally rides a horse in the very final episode, but only after he apologises to it. Thirty years later, the show still holds up and does not look dated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still A Great Show, Even After 30 Years
I remember watching this show religiously when I was a kid and thinking it was the best thing on TV. The philosophy of life exemplified by the character Kwai Chang Caine (David Carradine) had a real and lasting impact on me. Watching the same episodes all over again 30 years down the road, I find that they have not lost their original power. I would recommend watching this show with your children. If everyone learned to behave more like Kwai Chang Caine, the world would be a better place indeed.

5-0 out of 5 stars bruce lee myths
It is a common myth that Bruce Lee was involved in the creation of the kung fu TV series. The myth that it was stolen from him is just a fabrication popularized by the seldom factual movie "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story". He did however audition for the role and was turned down and rightfully so. Bruce was too big for the role of a humble monk. Why would anyone complain about him NOT getting this role, if he did he wouldn't have made any movies and would not have become a cult hero. He would just be another used and abused series character actor of the 70's.... With that said, this series as worth anyones time and money and amazons prices can't be beat! ... Read more

It may sound like a gimmick--The Greatest '70s Cop Shows is a compilation of first episodes from Starsky and Hutch, Police Woman, S.W.A.T., The Rookies, and Charlie's Angels--but this DVD anthology really opens one's eyes to the look and feel of dramatic television during the so-called Me Decade. Except for Angels, which never wavered from its self-mocking, glossy action/stiff exposition playbook, these cop-program debuts (four of them from Aaron Spelling) import much of their fluid camera movement, multiple points-of-view, and dynamic, often wordless storytelling from the era's rough-and-tumble action movies (e.g., The French Connection). Which is to say these shows may be dumb but not necessarily cheesy (except Angels' post-modern cheese). There is a lot to admire about the opening ambush in S.W.A.T.'s "The Killing Ground," the hard-boiled camaraderie of Police Woman's "The End Game," and especially the reckless physicality and ironic jokes of Starsky and Hutch's "Savage Sunday." --Tom Keogh ... 5-0 out of 5 stars OH.....JUST SHOOT ME!!
It was just GREAT having the chance to own this DVD ! I am a big fan of America's Cop Shows and this item was really a "must -have".I just wish they could release more episodes of "The Police Woman" and "The Rookies" ( with Kate Jackson!!!), which are very interesting and which I had never watched before due to they had never been aired here in Brazil."The Angels" are "foxy" as always and you also get a chance to watch "Starski & Hutch" in the same package.

3-0 out of 5 stars More Angie, please...!
"Starsky & Hutch" were entertainingly silly for a couple of years, as were "Charlie's Angels", and "The Rookies" looks earnest but dated and tad naive. "SWAT" is essentially a shoot-em-up with few characters you get to know at all.

Interestingly, the one out of the five (and the one NOT produced by Aaron Spelling) that is easliy the most legitimate cop drama is "Police Woman" with Angie Dickinson--- it feels like a damn movie... something the other four certainly do not.

Funny how memories have written-off this series as a single, older version of a Charlie's Angel who still has her badge but does nothing else but turn "tricks", when, in fact, "Police Woman" seems to be the most sophisticated of the lot; it's aged beautifully.

Instead of packaging this mismatch of fun but otherwise unconnected 70s cop-show memories, let's see a DVD release of at LEAST "Police Woman"s first season, as I seem to remember it was the best year of the show--- and certainly quite removed from the other more comic-strip, though watchable, entries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back when TV was great
Let me tell you, I LOVE this dvd. I have been waiting for these shows to be released on dvd format for a long time. You get the first episodes of 5 classic 70's cop shows.

1. Charlies Angels
2. The Rookies
3. Starsky and Hutch
4. Swat
5. Police Woman

I love all these shows, but I espacially love Police Woman and Starsky and Hutch. I grew up watching these shows, and there is not a cop show today that can hold a candle to these shows. I have some Charlie's Angels on dvd, and Starsky and Hutch on VHS from Columbia House, but I have missed watching Police Woman in over 25 years. I had a serious crush on Angie Dickinson back in the day. This is a great dvd of classic tv, when tv was entertaining, not all this reality crap that is on now. I just hope they realease more Police Woman and Starsky and Hutch on dvd. Its well worth the price and then some. Get it....

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is The One I Been Waiting For!!!
I am so glad they are bring out those old cop shows out on DVD. I remember watching those shows like Charlie's Angels, Starsky & Hutch,S.W.A.T, The Rookies and Police Woman back then when I was a child in the 70's. I also watched those shows when they were on TVLand til they took all the cop shows off on TVLand. I brought the DVD and I have too tell you this is the best DVD ever!!! My favorite ones on there are S.W.A.T and Charlie's Angels. You Must Buy this DVD to enjoy!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun!
If like me, you're a fan of '70s pop culture...you'll want to add this DVD to your collection. Sure, you'll read reviews that refer to the "cheesiness" factor. Forget all that. I hate the word "cheesy." It assumes that everything that's current and hip will always be cool and in fashion. How short-sighted. But I digress. Watching "The Greatest '70s Cop Shows" brought me back to a time when TV was truly exciting. You get the following first episodes:

"Starsky & Huch" - "Savage Sunday"
"Charlie's Angels" - "Hellride"
"The Rookies" - "Concrete Valley, Neon Sky"
"S.W.A.T." - "The Killing Ground"
"Police Woman" - "The End Game"

My favorite out of this bunch is the "Police Woman" episode. I had not seen that show in at least 25 years and it holds up very well. Angie Dickinson is extremely sexy, sensitive, feminine and tough. What an awesome, groundbreaking show.

The sound on the disc is terrific, the picture is probably the best we're going to get...and the price is right. Never mind those big-budget theatrical versions of these shows...they don't hold a candle to the originals. Buy this and go back to the groovy '70s. You'll have a great time! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Low-budget movie
I love this movie! I have waited a long time for it to come to DVD. Here it is 2004 - watching a movie made in the 1970's, that takes place in 1873. I just love the philosophy of this film - avoid conflict when possible. This is in stark contrast to every action movie in the last 30 years, where the hero is just looking for an excuse to beat up / kill someone. With the above praise out of the way, the reason I didn't give it a 5 is that the production values are terrible. This was a tv show pilot, not a Hollywood blockbuster. While there is an explosion, that is the only "special effect". Bottom line, Get this movie, just be prepared for a very "low tech" experience. ... Read more

I've seen most of the 1st 2 seasons and some of 3 and 4.
I saw seance for the 1st time the other week and thought it was really well done and a great performance by Jaclyn Smith.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Blast From The Past
When these shows first came out, I was eleven years old. I really didn't get a chance to see much of this first season when it ran in 1976, but I knew all about the three women who were the Angels thanks to tons of magazine coverage. The show was a phenomenom. Everybody had the Farrah poster!

Jump to today. This set is a very nice, complete view of season 1 (the only season Farrah was on the show). It includes the pilot and 22 episodes. Some are good and hold up with time. A couple are clinkers. But, the sound and video reproduction are good and it is easy to see why everyone was so spellbound by the show - Kate, Farrah and Jackelyn were stunning. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected
I was disappointed with this one...the storyline was okay, but I was surprised at the amount of foul language. It says "not-rated", so it's a little misleading. If you're particular about what your kids see these days, I'd skip this one. I would not consider it a good, "family Christmas movie". There are too many that are much better to fill that category. If you find it at a library or rent it for a night, you might want to see it, but it's not worth the selling price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas is a time for miracles
Pete and Ray are brothers who are involved in a long standing feud which started when Ray married Pete's ex-girlfriend. Pete was already upset over his wife leaving and saw this as a double betrayal. Pete's son, Michael, was also hurt at his mother's exit and got into trouble with the police. Christmas provisions have to be delivered to Alaska which means Pete and Ray have to work together. On the way they have to stop to pick up Ray's estranged Wife who is pregnant. On the journey they have to learn to forgive each other because only by working together can they survive the journey. Tom Wopat and John Schneider are excellent as feuding brothers who love each other really. Kim Delaney is perfect as the alienated and pregnant wife. Zachary Ansley is great as the rebellious teenage son. Hoyt Axton is fantastic as their late father's business partner. If you like warm and fuzzy moments then you will love this film. A great film for all the family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas is a time for miracles!
Pete and Ray are brothers. They have to transport christmas provisions to Alaska. Pete and Ray have been involved in a feud for a while. On the way Pete has to deal with a rebellious son,
a brother who is a magnet for trouble and his ex-girlfriend who is now his sister-in-law. Ray has to deal with an alienated and pregnant wife. Ray was afraid of the awesome responsibility of parenthood and he was also worried he wouldn't be as good a father as his brother was. Pete's son, Michael, was still hurt because his mother had left a year ago. This film is about people who have to learn to forgive each other for various things. Only by working together can they survive the journey!
Tom Wopat and John Schneider are excellent as feuding brothers.
Hoyt Axton is great as Pete and Ray's late father's business partner. Kim Delaney is perfect as the estranged and pregnant wife. Zachary Ansley is fantastic as the disrupted teenager.
If you like warm and fuzzy moments you will love this. With John
Schneider and Tom Wopat starring in it what more could you want in a film?

4-0 out of 5 stars Why Christmas?
Why call it a Christmas movie?
The "Cristmas" part of this film is the least fun,the least interesting and the least memorable!
The best part of this movie is the first part, where brothers Ray(Schneider)and Pete(Wopat)fight eachother and their memories of a childhood where they were labeled the bad and the good guy respectively. There is some good stuff here, and at its best, the two brothers resemble Junior and Curly in "Junior Bonner",but at it`s worst,it`s just sadly sentimental.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Season
This movie reminds us of the reasons for the Holiday season. It brings back the family and should be watched by adults and children of all ages. It is a current movie that updates "It is a Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart. I can't begin my Holiday season without watching this movie. My children look forward to watching this movie every year and they are now teenagers. I highly recomend this movie. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Texas History and battle / war buff classic
Based on Pulitzer Prize author John Michener's Texas. GREAT FOR TEXAS HISTORY buffs and of Epic quality.

Students of Texas History will find is makes the material come to life. However the sound quality is poor on the VHS version. I'd rent it before I bought a copy to know what the sound quality is like before purchasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully engaging western-a must see
This DVD equals a two-tape VHS,which means approximately three hours of watching, but you won`t feel that you`re wasting a single minute in the company of these larger-than-life,yet still realistic and believable, heroes who all played a part, big or small,in making Texas a state. The colorful and engaging story of the Lone Star State is being told with pride and love in this TV production. You`ll learn ever so much, and it`s extremely entertaining as well.A very nice "The making of..." is included, where you`ll get interviews with most of the actors.
This is definitely Stacy Keach`s film. In his portrayal of "Mr.Texas" himself,Sam Houston,he makes "Texas" what it is,with the help of Patric Duffy as a sensitive, intelligent Stephen Austin,David Keath as a hell-raisin`,good-timin`Jim Bowie and Grant Show as the corageous, defiant William Barret Travis.
Other actors also do a good job, including country singers and actors Randy Travis and John Schneider(who,as Davy Crockett,is the man who produces the best rousing rebel yell of this movie!)

The best argument for purchasing this film is what Grant Show says in "The making of...": "It`s an adventure."

It really,truly is!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Last Command 40 years later
James A. Michener's Texas is a quality TV miniseries that tells the story of how Texas became a state. The movie condenses almost 30 years of history into about 3 hours which is one of its bad points. Narrated by Charlton Heston, the miniseries shows Stephen Austin's colonization of Texas, cries for war, the Alamo, the Battle at San Jacinto, and the struggle to help the Republic of Texas survive all while following the story of several fictional characters.

The cast for the movie is really very good. It stars Benjamin Bratt, Rick Schroeder, Patrick Duffy, Chelsea Field, Randy Travis, Anthony Michael Hall, Stacey Keach, John Schneider, David Keith and many other notable faces. Bratt is very good as Benito Garza as is Schroeder as Otto MacNab, a young Texas Ranger. Overall, the movie is pretty good, but everything seems a little rushed. For one, the footage from the Alamo attack is from The Last Command made in the 1950's which looks very out of place. Also, San Jacinto is done almost all in slow motion which just doesn't work. Still a good movie though if you're looking for a basic history of Texas.

2-0 out of 5 stars Texas with no Comanches (or anyone else)
At the beginning of the movie Charlton Heston tells us that there are 7000 Hispanics, 20,000 Anglos(?), and I forgot how many Native Americans (I only use this phrase because I know so many people from India and it seems odd calling others Indians). Wonder why there were only 7000 Hispanics after hundreds of years of Spanish rule? How about Comanches and other North American Indians (okay so I said it)? The Spanish had little trouble dispensing with the more agrarian Central Mexican tribes. However, they and their Mexican descendents NEVER got north of San Antonio (except to be slaughtered). Also, non-Hispanic Texans were contained for years by the Comanches (and others). So, how is it that the movie characters living on along the frontier only have troubles with Comanches twice in thirty years? I liked the actors (for the most part). Other than that, this is just a poor re-telling of the Alamo.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good movie.
I read the book before I saw the movie, and even so I wasn't disappointed. The movie told a good section of the story and stayed as true as possible to the book. I just wish that they had been able to do more of the book. I had two minor problems with it, though: Some of the footage (like the fall of the Alamo) looked like it might have been borrowed from an old western. Also, during the battle right before Otto and Yancey captured Santa Anna, I don't understand why they had Sam Houston galloping around the edges of the battle in slow motion, hardly fighting at all, looking like an early-nineteenth-century Captain America. I don't think that served any real purpose. Other than that, I liked it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic DVD release
CHARLIE'S ANGELS gets a wonderful DVD release with perfect picture and two choice episodes.

Farrah Fawcett-Majors, Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson star in two stories from the memorable first season; "Night Of The Strangler" and "To Kill An Angel". The only main qualm is the lack of chapters in the episodes.

Also included is the entertaining "Angels Forever" retrospective featurette which quizzes fans of the show as well as providing footage from the show and details from later cast members including Cheryl Ladd and Tanya Roberts.

Pretty impressive DVD package all-round!

This two-part special edition is definitely a collector's item especially for those die-hard "Charlie's Angels" fans.It features Jaclyn Smith, who deserves the recognition as the "most angelic of them all," and two of the best episodes of the series. We're not talking award-winning stuff in this dvd issue but an outstanding entertainment to "visit" the undisputed queens of the 70s television.

The episode "Night of the Strangler" shows why Jaclyn Smith lasted so long in the series. Her looks and style are timeless plus that scene in her famous white bikini is a must to see. Of course, Kate Jackson and Farrah Fawcett are on hand to complete the trio.

For the episode "To Kill An Angel," new fans will be surprise that the show is not just pure bikini's and guns. It showcases also the dramatic sides of the trio.

The cover alone is worth the trip, so buy it now and collect! A must!

OMG, please tell me this is the first of many more to come, Having the Angels on DVD is way fun. One mishap though, NO SCENE SELECTION. But it makes up for that with the Angel Featurette and the digitally enhanced audio and video.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best 70's cop show EVA!
I can't wait till the studio gets around to releasing this.

It contains Michael Douglas' finest work and is without a doubt the best 70's cop show produced to date.

4-0 out of 5 stars Action and Drama, S.F.-Style
THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO was one of the better crime dramas of the 70's, featuring screen veteran Karl Malden as Lieutenant Mike Stone and rising star Michael Douglas as Inspector Steve Keller. The series was produced by Quinn Martin and filmed on location in the City By The Bay.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about STREETS, besides the solid scripts and beautiful location scenery, was the powerhouse roster of guest stars. The series featured performances by many top actors from both new and old Hollywood, including Martin Sheen, Joseph Cotten, James Woods, Ida Lupino, John Ritter, Leslie Nielsen, Patty Duke, Nick Nolte, Larry Hagman and even a young Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Michael Douglas left the series in 1976 to pursue a movie career. His final episode was the two-part fifth season premiere, "The Thrill Killers", about a radical organization that kidnaps an entire jury. The story was inspired by the Patricia Hearst kidnapping case, which was still making headlines at the time.Douglas was replaced by Richard Hatch for the final year.

Several volumes of STREETS episodes were released on VHS back in 1998 but are now out of print. It would be great to see entire seasons of the drama released on DVD.
