The brainchild of veteran writer-directors Danny Arnold and Theodore J. Flicker, the comedy/drama Barney Miller (1975-1982) offered a very human look at the inner workings of a New York City police precinct; its wry and observant scripts, aided by a stellar cast, helped earn the series three Emmy Awards and a devoted fan base, which should be pleased by this two-disc set that compiles its entire first season. Viewers familiar with the series' later seasons will notice substantial differences in the cast and storyline; episodes divide Barney's (Hal Linden) time evenly between the 12th Precinct and his apartment, which he shares with wife Barbara Barrie and two children (all of whom would be phased out of the series). The first season squad was composed of Abe Vigoda's dyspeptic Fish, the overeager Wojciehowicz (Max Gail), dry-witted Yemana (Jack Soo, who passed away during the fifth season), and street-smart Chano (Gregory Sierra, who departed the series after the second season); Ron Glass's dapper Harris would not be listed in the opening credits until subsequent seasons.

Arnold, along with Chris Hayward (Get Smart) and other scribes, would pen the majority of the first season, which set the tone for the series by pitting the squad against a host of offbeat criminals, other cops, and regular citizens, several of whom would become semi-regulars; James Gregory's crusty Inspector Luger makes his debut in "Vigilante" (episode 9), while unscrupulous lawyer Arnold Ripner (Alex Henteloff) and Detective Wentworth (a pre-Alice Linda Lavin) have their first appearances in "The Experience" (episode 2) and "Ms. Cop" (episode 8), respectively.

Columbia/TriStar's two-disc set offers all 13 episodes of the first season, as well as short credit lists for some of the major players; the little-seen 1974 pilot, "The Life and Times of Captain Barney Miller," might have made an interesting supplemental feature, but fans should be pleased to have this set regardless. --Paul Gaita ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dum...da da dum...da da dum...
Who can forget that classic bass line intro! Barney Miller is finally on DVD in a two DVD set featuring the first 13 episodes of season 1 totally uncut and commercial free for the first time! Barney Miller ran from Jan. 1975 to May 1982 (8 seasons, 170 episodes). The sitcom was a new concept, concerning a group of Police Detectives and their Captain and the goings-on in a NY precinct squadroom. The cast, which would make slight changes over the years, had to be one of the most diverse in TV history. In season one, the cast includes Barney (Hal Linden), Wojciehowicz (Max Gail), Harris (Ron Glass), Fish (Abe Vigoda), Yemana (Jack Soo) and Chano (Gregory Sierra). Season 1 is also the only time Barney's whole family were shown. In Season 2, only his wife Elizabeth (Barbara Barrie) had appearances and by Season 3, even she was written out of the show. Barney Miller is a rare sitcom from the 70s that is essential and makes a welcome addition to other classics like All in the family, Sanford & Son, and the Jeffersons. Season one includes these episodes:

Disc One:
01. Ramon
02. The experience
03. Snow job
04. Graft
05. Courtesans
06. Stakeout
07. The Bureaucrat
08. Ms. Cop
09. The vigilante
Disc Two:
10. The guest
11. Escape artist
12. Hair
13. Hero

Trivia:

*The characters of Barney, Wojo, & Harris would be the only detectives to remain throughout the entire series as regular cast members. Fish left after 3 seasons, Chano after 2, and Yemana after 4 (Jack Soo passed away in January 1979). In season 3, Detrich (Steve Landesberg) & Levitt (Ron Carey) would join the cast as regulars until the series ended.

*Look for Linda Lavin (TV's Alice) in episode 8 debuting as Det. Janice Wentworth. She would make appearances in the second season as well.

*Before Barney Miller, Gregory Sierra (Chano) was popular for his role as Fred and Lamont's neighbor, Julio, who had a pet goat named Chico, on Sanford & Son. He made appearances on everything from All in the Family (where he had no accent) to Miami Vice. After Barney Miller, Sierra joined the cast of Soap.

*One of the main series writers, Reinhold Weege, previously wrote on M*A*S*H* and went on to create one of the funniest sitcoms ever, Night Court! (by the way, where's season one?!!)

Jack Soo (1916-1979)
James Gregory (Insp. Frank Luger) (1911-2002)
Florence Stanley (Bernice Fish) (1924-2003)

5-0 out of 5 stars At last. Now where are the rest?
This is one of my all-time favourite shows, one that I've been waiting for years for Sony / Columbia Tri-star to release (along with Newsradio).

Compared to some of the later Barney Miller seasons this probably isn't worth the full 5 stars, but it certainly deserves 5 starts compared to the zillions of average TV shows around, past or present.

I agree with the earlier review that mentioned that the picture quality isn't top-notch, but then it is almost thirty years since the original broadcasts and the quality is good enough that I forgot to worry about it within the first five minutes of the first episode. It's as good as other 70s television DVDs.

I don't mind the lack of bonus extras - as long the episodes are there I'm happy, though I miss not having "The Life and Times of Captain Barney Miller" mentioned in the other review.

Can't wait for the other seasons to be released, and well done to Sony for not coming out with a stupid 'best of' (which we all know would've picked the 'wrong' episodes). Full season releases are the only way to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for seasons 2-8
The first season was great...now let's get the other seven seasons (as well as the pilot episode) out as soon as possible. I will buy all of them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor picture quality on DISC 1
I was very excited to hear that the first season would be available on DVD on 2-discs.

Unfortunately, on the first DVD, the picture quality is very bad, like VHS in the "LP" mode (e.g., way too much compression). The second disc is acceptable, but it only has 4-episodes on it.

Rather than cram 9-episodes on one DVD, they should have placed only 4-episodes per DVD, or a maximum of 6-episdoes on Disc 1 and 7-episodes on Disc 2.

If you can rent it (e.g., NetFlix), I would.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Breakdance Movie with a Hollywood Touch...
This movie is about how life was for urban NYC youngsters during the early 80's. Hip-Hop gave rise with its four elements: Graffiti, Breakdance, MCing, and DJing running wild through the streets. This was the rich culture that people all over the world immersed themselves in and were impacted by. But I agree with those that say Hollywood exploited this culture we call Hip-Hop. They made this movie without understanding its true meaning and essence. But this movie is a fun watch because there are many big names known to the Hip-Hop world in it like the Rock Steady Crew and NYC Breakers, Kool Herc, Doug E. Fresh, Kool Moe Dee, and many other big names. If anything, this movie is remembered for one thing and that is the notorious ROXY scene and the battle between two great breakdance crews, RSC and NYC Breakers. It's probably one of the best battle scenes ever. I also like this movie because they had a couple of scenes at my alma mater, CCNY. The romance and drama is typical of Hollywood and it doesn't really help to formidably portray the Hip-Hop culture in anyway, rather it takes away from the few notable parts in the movie. They should of omitted the fakery and just focused on what it claims to be about, Hip-Hop. I think it would have had a better reputation and gotten much more respect from those who actually lived the culture during that period. I recommend "Wild Style" or "Style Wars" to check out what Hip-Hop was really all about in those days. PEACE!

5-0 out of 5 stars And the Beat Goes On
A true hip-hop classic. I was first introduced to this film through my mother who was a teenager at the time of it's original release in 1984. Thanks to this movie, at 9 years old, i have a greater appreciation for hip hop and better understand its origins. This movie gives an accurate representation of one of the 20th century's most influential musical genres. Unlike the other hip hop movies Beat Street accurately captures the look and feel of the hip hop culture of New York City in the 80s (sheepskins, bomber jackets, kangol hats) It also takes a holistic look at hip hop nation astutely incorporating all of its elements - rap music, break dancing, spinning/mixing, graffiti art. More than just a movie about hip hop, it is a movie about familial ties, friendship and the triumph of the human spirit. It is a must see for the new generation of hip hop soldiers. Buy it - YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED! Peace out!

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS MOVIE SHOULDN'T EVER GET LESS THAN 5!!!!!!
WHOEVER GAVE BEAT STREET LESS THAN 5,,AREN'T TRUE TO HIP HOP,AND PROBABLY DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THE MOVEMENT THAT BOUGHT ABOUT YOUR 50 CENTS,AND PETEY PABLO'S,AND JAY-Z'S.... BEAT STREET IS MY #1 HIP HOP MOVIE!!! (...)BEAT STREET WILL REMAIN A CLASSIC TO ME..

5-0 out of 5 stars A combination of Beastmaster,Andromeda,Mutant X and Hiphop
Beat street is one of the greatest movies of all time since House party and Class act came out in the 90's decade where I grew up.It was really a great movie and one of the best movies of the year!

5-0 out of 5 stars ROCKSTEADY BY FAR WINS THE BATTLE, OFF CAMERA
In the movie it would have appeared that NYC Breakers would have won the battle @ the Roxy because of their fast, dynamic moves. But I think Rocksteady on the streets would beat them easy. If you see home movie footage of both groups, Rocksteady by far has more original and different moves that show true bboying. But dont get me wrong, I'm not taking away from the NYC Breakers power and speed, and I still think they are tight !! This was my favorite movie growing up in the 80's along with Fast Times @ ridgemont high (what a combination huh !) peace ya'll ... Read more

Produced by Russell Simmons and hosted by Mos Def, this groundbreaking HBO series presents poetry for the hip-hop generation. The setting is New York's Supper Club, the performers are young men and women of every hue, and the tools are words: angry, funny--even profane--words. Taped live, each of the four 30-minute episodes from the first season features several poets and a guest or two (from the fiery Last Poets to the out-of-her-element Jewel). This isn't your grandma's traditional verse, but rather slam poetry--or spoken word--as influenced by Public Enemy as Langston Hughes and the evening news. Some are powerful (see Suheir Hammad), some clever (Sarah Jones), and some irritating (Yellow Rage), but each poem is sure to provoke some kind of reaction. Def Poetry would go on to beget a world tour, a Peabody Award and, in its Broadway incarnation, a Tony for best theatrical event. --Kathleen C. Fennessy ... Read more

Description

"Elizabeth! I'm comin, honey!" Those were the words oftenheard coming from 9114 South Central, home to Fred Sanford (Redd Foxx)and his son Lamont (Demond Wilson) - known more affectionately to each other as "Pop" and "Dummy" - and their junkyard business.Sanford and Son was the second TV series from Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin, whocreated the groundbreaking "All in the Family" the year before. "Sanford and Son" aired from 1972-1977 and was NBC's most popular prime-time series for four of its five seasons, earning four Emmy nominations and a Golden-Globe Award for Redd Foxx during its run. Enjoy this hysterical first season - or you'll get one across the lip. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Lamont, you big dummy!"
Complete first season of the hilarious sitcom about a 65 year old junk dealer, Fred Sanford(Redd Foxx), and his son/partner, Lamont (Demond Wilson) is a classic. The same people (Norman Lear, Bud Yorkin, etc.) who dominated 1970s television comedy by bringing us All in the Family (1971), Maude (1972), Good Times (1974), and The Jeffersons (1975) also did Sanford and Son (1972). Sanford & Son does not play much on TV anymore, so if you havent had the pleasure of seeing it, but are a fan of any of the previously listed shows I highly recommend it. Redd Foxx was a comedic genius and this show features his best work. This DVD set will feature the first 14 episodes (Jan - April 1972), here are the titles:

01) Crossed Swords
02) Happy Birthday, Pop
03) Here comes the bride, there goes the bride
04) The copper caper
05) A matter of life and breath
06) We were robbed
07) A pad for Lamont
08) The great Sanford Siege
09) Coffins for sale
10) The Barracuda
11) TV or not TV
12) The suitcase case
13) The return of the Barracuda
14) The piano movers

5-0 out of 5 stars Here Comes The Big One
This first season of Sanford and Son is the best! The episodes are hysterical, with Fred up to his usual old tricks, and Lamont being a big dummy. Get this and enjoy a good laugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars My all time favorite.
This is the season that changed the face of television. No longer were african-americans placed in the supporting role as Redd Foxx marched the show to the top of the charts with his antics. "Five across your lips" and "This is the big one" soon became household punchlines. Never before has a show impacted television as this program demonstrated life from the ghetto and how people, regardless of race, are really all the same!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars i love the 70's
great show. Lamount was annoying with a funny dad who owns a junkyard in california. enjoy the good and bad times of their life

5-0 out of 5 stars the comedic stylings of Redd Foxx
"Sanford and Son" was an American version of a British show "Steptoe and Son." The premise is the antics of junkman Fred Sanford and his son Lamont. Most of the episodes in the first season were basically adaptations of "Steptoe and Son" episodes.

Nevertheless, you get the entire first season here and it's worth every penny. Obviously, this show was ahead of its time and un p.c. as well. One significant plus with this first season is that you will get each episode in its entirety. TV Land obviously has to edit out certain parts (ie Fred using the N word)for today's audiences.

You also see the evolution of Fred and Lamont, along with Fred's buddy Melvin(played by longtime Redd Foxx partner Slappy White), and see early nemesis' of Fred like Aunt Hazel (Esther didn't appear until season two). All of the episodes are excellent, with my favorites being "Piano Movers", "Happy Birthday, Pop" "We Were Robbed", and "Color TV."

I can't emphasise how important this show was in the realm of pop culture and some of the issues tackled are still relevant today. Nothing like this will ever hit the airwaves again. Pick up the Season 2 and 3 sets as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic
This is a classic series. I never get tired of watching. My kids love them. Hours of entertainment I never tire of watching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Redd Foxx is the GREATEST!!!
One thing I could always be sure of no matter what was happening in my life or what I might have been going through, "Sanford and Son" was a sure bet to snap me out of it and make me laugh so hard no matter how many times I had ever seen any particular episode. Foxx was a comic genius with delivery and timing that was unequaled.

Being somewhat of a "Sanford and Son purist", I have to say that I prefer the first three years of the show to the others. It wasn't that Redd Foxx was any less funny in later years, but sometimes the plotlines left something to be desired. Having said that, I would rather watch ANY episode of "Sanford and Son" from any season than much of what passes for comedy today.

What some people may not know is that when you get these DVD's you will get to see the complete, uncut, thirty minute episodes. On television reruns, there is always at least 5-7 minutes cut out of any episode. So if you think you have seen all of "Sanford and Son" you will be pleasantly surprised to see even more hilarious footage that you may never have seen before.

Get these-you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome shows to watch over & over again.
Awesome show. Redd Foxx is hilarious to watch over & over again.
Well worth it to have in your own collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite show of all time
A definite classic masterpiece that should be in everyone's collection especially since it's not on TV

5-0 out of 5 stars Go Ahead, you know you want to...
I was watching Sanford and Son on cable the other day, and was surprised to find that they had actually edited the episode that they were showing to remove what are now considered "Politically Incorrect" words or statements. The thought police run amok. If like me, you don't like the thought of someone trying to rewrite or erase a part of history, no matter how distasteful they may now consider it to be, then do yourself a favor and get these dvd's. I bought them separately and paid almost twenty five dollars more that this package deal costs, so it is indeed a bargain. I can't wait for the next season to be released. Get them before someone decides to edit these as well!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Baby and Toddler DVD
My daughter has watched this video almost every day since she was two months old (she's now 21 months old). It quickly became her favorite video last year, and I think it's because of the catchy, high-energy songs.

She prefers this video to many other ones because there are several good musical numbers, and there is only a limited amount of between-song talking. I even memorized several of the songs to sing to her in the car when we ride around town, and that used to stop her from crying when she was 6-12 months old (actually, it still works pretty well in the car sometimes).

Now that she's 21 months old, she jumps up and down and dances around when the songs come on, and she applauds at the end of each song. I'm amazed that this video has kept her attention for 19 months. Also, she really loves the "preview other sesame street DVDs" section. It shows you 30-second snippets of 15-20 other DVDs, focusing on the catchy songs. I choose the "play all previews" selection to give her a 10-minute block of previews. That gives us about 55 minutes of total entertainment - twice the length of many other toddler DVDs.

I almost forgot the most redeeming quality of this DVD - it teaches words. My daughter can now say the words "go", "sticky", and "elmo". She even tries to sing along with the syllables that she knows.

I can't recommend this DVD enough! It's a great baby and toddler DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great blend of old and new
For moms and dads who remember the classic Sesame Street skits, this DVD offers some nice gems. And it blends the older material into a cute, cohesive storyline that features some really catchy music and fun new action. My 18-month old just loves this DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another hit by Sesame Street!
My two-year old son is a huge fan of Sesame Street, and we own several VHS/DVD Sesame Street videos. This is our latest addition to our library of videos, and was an instant hit! My son loves to watch this video - over and over! It grabbed his attention right from the very start. I was a bit worried that he wasn't old enough to deal with seeing words, but Bert and Ernie do it in a very entertaining way, which keeps my son's attention. He is enjoying himself and learning while watching this video. All Sesame Street shows/videos are educational, in my humble opinion, but this one is by far VERY educational. Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars We love this video!
The story is cute and our daughter loves it. I like how they dissect different words to make other words. There are a number of jokes that are funny for adults, so watching it with your child is not annoying. We have it on DVD and play it in the car or on the plane during long trips - it's been a lifesaver! I also like that my daugther is learning while she is being entertained.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great video for toddlers and parents!
We own several Sesame Street videos and this is by far the best one. It is fun for our 18 month old daughter and for her parents! It has a Muppet Show feel to it and the songs are very catchy. It is a great introduction to the use of words as well. Enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 thumbs up from our house
We bought this for our 22 month old twin girls who, as my huband says, are in their "kinetic" phase and they LOVE it. Since the very first viewing they have asked several times a day to watch "Big Bird Dance". It is a bit corny to adults here and there, but it's not that bad. Our girls "fly" around the room with their blankets flapping behind them on Batty Bat. But nothing beats watching the two of them following the directions perfectly on A Very Simple Dance to Do. They exectue it beautifully. It's so amazing (I wish they would follow my requests as easily). We've even heard them in their crib at night singing that and going through the steps.

As always there is great variation in the musical styles (pop, jazz, swing, disco, snippits of classical/bluegrass/asian, etc) which our girls really enjoy also.

All in all, this is a great DVD for those little ones in their "kinetic" phase. Oh, and for parents, the spoof on Saturday Night Fever is a great little nugget -- all while the kids learn the ABC's. Leave it to Sesame Street to throw the adults a bone in the midst of all the kid stuff (since we watch this as many times as the kids do).

Our only request is that it be LONGER. Our girls could dance for ours. But of course Sesame Street wants the kids to more than watch videos...and so do I.
Hope you enjoy it too.

4-0 out of 5 stars 1969?!
I bought this DVD because it said 1969 as the publication date. Don't be fooled.
The DVD is pieces from different eras. There are a few bits that can be from 1969 (the disco scene, obviously!), but the live action scenes were from the 80's, judging by the way the clothes look.

It's a nice video and my daughter seems to like it. Just don't buy this DVD if you want to go down memory lane with your kids!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed...
Being the biggest Sesame fan (yup, child of the 70s), I was so anxious to buy anything Sesame on DVD for my 16 month old daughter. She's nuts about all the DVDs we own (and so am I), but not this one. I found it quite lame, corny (Barney is supposed to be corny, not Sesame Street) and boring. Too many "people" in it with "people" skits interrupting Muppet skits. Sesame Street is nothing without the Muppets, so I found this DVD was filled with a lot of filler. With such high hopes for this one, it was only worth it for the Disco Grover skit which was worth 2 stars. We're selling ours [...]

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!!!!!
My son has been watching this video since he was 8months old, and loves it more every time he sees it. The songs are catchy, the dancing is fun to watch and join in with. Plus it has a favorite from my childhood, "Doin the Pidgeon" with Bert. An absolute must have in your toddlers' repetoire.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun!
My two daughters, ages 1 and 2, are Sesame Street fanatics. The girls love this video. The 2 year old follows the steps in "A very simple dance". The songs are very catchy. This is a very good video. I have the dvd version. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Give it a try!
Sometimes it takes a few viewings to get into a video in our house. I always preview the tapes before my 17 month old watches them, just to make sure they aren't too scary. I watched this one twice, I loved it so much! This tape is now played every day without fail, and we all love it. Don't be put off by the style of the songs. They aren't really modern sounding, but they are so catchy, that you can't help but love them. Remember that these tapes are for your child, but you have to watch them, too. Enjoy!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Warm and Fuzzy (and blue and orange!)
Similar to "The Best of Kermit" this is arranged as an "award show" - but it contains a fabulous collection of clips with your favorite monsters, and some you've never seen before!

Herry and Elmo host the "Fuzzy Awards," and though Elmo can hardly wait to open the envelope, Herry manages to make him behave while they play the nominees - "Fur," just for fun, "Herry's Family Song," comparing Herry and his parents, "Frazzle," - who says "arrrgh!" no matter what he feels, "Two Heads Are Better than One", with the two-headed monster, "Fuzzy and Blue (and Orange!)" with the terrific trio of Grover, Herry, and Cookie (and Frazzle), "Comb Your Face," "Healthy Food," a Cookie Monster rap, "What Do I Do When I"m Alone" with Grover (what happened to Being Afraid?) and, of course "C is for Cookie."

My favorite moment in the show is the achievement award, which Herry gives to "That Furry Blue Mommy of Mine," a song remeniscent of "Dream a Little Dream" that makes me give my boy an extra squeeze.

Enjoy!

PS. One small dissapointment: it doesn't include "Monster in the Mirror," which surprised me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of monster fun!
I've bought quite a few used videos lately, as the selection is better than what the stores are carrying lately for Sesame Street. This video is a riot and my daughter begs for it almost daily. Set-up like an awards show, the songs "Fur" and "Fuzzy and Blue" are fun and entertaining even for adults. I like this video because it includes the character Frazzle, who was dropped because he was deemed "too scary" to kids. My 2 year old LOVES Frazzle and begs for his song over and over. How's that for scary? This video is cute and the songs are fun. From the songs mentioned above to "C is for Cookie" this video contains lots of monster fun!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sesame Street's Monster Hits! (1990)
Parents,
This is a great Sesame Songs Video. My 8 year old son loves Cookie Monster and I wanted to find a video that did include him. Tap along as Cookie Monster croons his big hit C Is For Cookie, clap along as Grover sings Fuzzy And Blue and What Do I Do When I'm Alone. Get some more monster in you.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great diversion from the all Elmo everything
It took our 2 year old a little while to get into this video, but now that he has, he asks for it every night "Onster Hits".

As a parent, it's nice to see characters that I grew up including Grover, Herry, Cookie Monster which don't seem to appear much in the current Sesame Street shows.

There are quite a few monster in this video that I hadn't seen, nor have I seen since, although Frazzle is great.

I'd definitely recommend buying this video. You just may have to view it two or three times for you and your kid(s) to get into it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stomp + Sesame Street = GREAT STUFF for little ones
The cast of Stomp visits Sesame Street in this fantastic DVD.

In the usual Sesame Street style, there is a general plot line (Telly loses his Tuba) intertwined with short bits and cartoons all related to making music. The Stomp cast crosses in and out of the plot, making music with brooms, cans, boxes of Tic Tacs, etc. Very creative and very charming.

My 14-month-old loves this video. He's just starting to try to make "music" along with the video, usually using an oatmeal box or pots and pans that I put nearby for him to use.

Great stuff, including the "Pinball" cartoon (counting to 12) that I loved to watch when I was little.

5-0 out of 5 stars When Your Heart Is Open Wide....
...then everything *truly* is music. This wonderful video is teaching my 2-year old son, *and* re-reminding me of the beautiful simplicity of ordinary objects around us. It awakens the imagination to how these common materials can be used and played with in new and unusual ways. I delight in watching my son pat-pat-pat on tables with wooden spoons or tinker toy sticks. He has even created his own musical instrument by taking a can, filling it with rocks and shaking it, yelling, "moo-sik!" - with no probing from me. To think of the money I have spent on 'real' musical instruments. Completely fun, totally foot-stomping, AND educational entertainment for all ages. As an aside, those Stomp cast members are not only extremely talented, but pretty darn cute to look upon!! In my opinion, one of the best in Sesame Street videos.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Amazon Sesame Street DVD listed incorrectly as 1969.
This is a really fun DVD. My daughter enjoys it a lot.
The only problem is that Amazon lists these Sesame Street DVDs as from 1969. I purchased a few of them to discover that only portions, such as the pinball count video, are from the original Sesame Street. The majority of the scenes are not from my generation at all!

Otherwise, it's a swell DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars FAVORITE SESAME
We just purchased this DVD for my daughter who is 9 mos old, I happen to think I enjoy it more than even she does! We love Sesame Street and think this is one of the most entertaining! I wish STOMP would come back to make another DVD for us !

5-0 out of 5 stars our babies are addicted -- but in a good way
They've been watching every night as their bedtime winddown for a couple months now (they're 14 month old twins) and still enjoy it. They've become more musical watching it, somehow -- clapping, tapping feet, bobbing the head. We have not yet found any other Sesame Street video that compares with this one. Love it. It's even tolerable for the parents to watch over and over and over.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best we own!
We own about 10-12 Sesame Street DVD's and this is by FAR the best of them!!!
The songs are great! My 5 month old loves this CD! Not just for older children. My husband and I enjoy it, as well!
I end up singing the catchy tunes at the office... an unfortunate side effect...

5-0 out of 5 stars Rock & Roll
Parents,
My 8 year old boy loves Cookie Monster but Cookie Monster is not in this that much. But this is a very good video. This video tape is very rare. It is so rare it has a small miunte part with the Count's wife the Countess in it. If you have this video you are very lucky.

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids love it, and so do I
The songs on this video are excellent kids versions of
cool rock songs. They did a great job rendering them
for little ears - so much so that I find myself humming
the tunes myself after watching the video with the kids.
And of course, everything is visually engaging in true
Sesame Street fashion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll
I grew up watching Sesame Street for many years. Now I'm 18 and I still think it rocks. On this tape you'll find the GREATEST song ever written by the legendary Jim Henson. It's called "you're Alive" and it taught your children about what was alive and what wasn't. This video will prove to you that learning doesnt have to be painstaking. Your kids (maybe yourselves too) will realise that learning is a pleasure with awesome songs and tapes like this one....END

5-0 out of 5 stars A most enjoyable learning video
I first purchased it in 1990 for my first grand daughter and she loved it. Next I bought one for her to take home. When her sister came along she also loved it and now their youngest sister also loves it. Unfortunately, it finally wore out and now I can't find a new one anywhere. The video consists of favorite rock and roll song tunes with lyrics about learning different things for example The Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" is called "cooperation". I highly recommend this video if anyone can find it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A hidden treasure!
This movie is a true hidden gem. The footage justs takes you back and makes you feel as if you were back in '75. Definate feel good movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace
Fantastic! What a wonderful movie, blending the old south with the movement of the times. It influenced me to buy it and add it to my collection of American movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Swan Song of Moms Mabley
Lovers of the legendary Black commedienne Moms Mabley will treasure this film. In a way, it's about everything she stood for. She moves to Baltimore and gets involved when crooked politicans use a confused Black man (Moses Gunn) and his alcoholic wife (Rosiland Cash) as puppets in a phony race. Seventy-plus year old Moms steps in this mess and does her best to straighten things out! I dare anyone who remembers Moms to keep a dry eye when she gives her climactic speech to the students at Morgan State University (a real Black college in Baltimore). It's almost as if she were giving her own eulogy while still giving the students hope to fight for a better tomorrow (she had a heart attack during the filming and died shortly after it was released).

Admittedly, this is a very low-budget film with poor sound. But like I said, if you love Moms, you'll love this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mother's Savior
I found this video at a yard sale for ... It is the only video that my 15 mth old will watch in it's entirety. She is completely engrossed. She loves the songs and I enjoy watching her mimic the movements (Stand Up and Pinch Your Nose). This is a must-have video for all toddlers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sing Along..Please
When asking my 19 month old son which video he would like to watch, more often than not it is "Sing Along". It never grows old for him and I must admit I could watch Madeline Kahn and Grover's duet several times over. It is a real treat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for mom, too!
My 2 older kids, now ages 6 and 8, watched this tape until it wore out. With a new baby now, I will definitely buy it again. The kids LOVED these songs, even though the tape is obviously not from their generation. They didn't care. I enjoyed it because some of these songs are from when I watched Sesame Street as a kid! As far as suffering through kids' videos goes, this one won't make you want to smash the TV (as so many of the others tend to do!).

4-0 out of 5 stars High in Sesame goodness, low in Muppet appearances
I like this tape a lot, even though it's dated (by Maria's big '80s hair!). Most of the singing takes place when the Sesame Street gang and a group of kids drag a piano up to the roof to have a sing-along with Bob and Big Bird. Workmen Biff and Sully just happen to be up there "fixing" a TV, where you get to see some terrific non-rooftop spots including Grover and the late great Madeline Kahn singing "Sing After Me," a sign-language enhanced "Sing," "We All Sing With The Same Voice," and "Doin the Pidgeon"

Maria, Gordon, Bob, Big Bird, Hoots the Owl and the kids all sing "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt," "Old MacDonald Had A Farm,""Stand Up and Pinch Your Nose," the Alphabet song, a cute upbeat number by Big Bird called "Cheer Up" and, for a grand finale, my ultimate favorite Sesame Street song, "What's The Name Of That Song."

The production values in this tape are very simple - but the focus is on the characters and their voices. Everybody gets to be who they are. I recommend this one to anybody who likes the people on Sesame Street as well as the muppets.

P.S. The video cover is a little misleading: Ernie and Bert aren't part of the sing-along: they appear separately in "Doin the Pigeon" and "Rubber Ducky." A bit of trivia - this tape started its life as a Sesame Street episode.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sing Along
Parents,
My 8 year old son likes Cookie Monster. Cookie Monster is not in this tape but this is a very funny tape. Big Bird and the gang go on top of the roof and Shirref and Selley are up fixing the t.v.(the were really try to get the anntena out of whack) This tape is dated 1987. Watch this tape and your kids will sing along. ... Read more

This collector's DVD features the five highest-rated episodes of "The Steve Harvey Show," starring Steve Harvey (The Original Kings of Comedy, TV's "It's Showtime at the Apollo") and "Cedric The Entertainer" (Barbershop, TV's "Cedric The Entertainer Presents"). 3-0 out of 5 stars This is a great show but there is one problem.
Now, if you watch this show on tv, there are a lot of jokes about dead celeberties. Even a cast member of the show is dead (Merlin Santana {He was shot while sitting in a car in Las Angeles, CA shortly after 2:30 a.m. when at least one person approached the car and fired}). The following are some celebrities that I noticed are mentioned quite often in the series: Barry White, Nell Carter, and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes of TLC "example from DVD episode 'Little Stevie Blunder' - "So I heard Ava (A charter) went 'Left Eye' on your left eye." Now, the series ended before those celebrities died. IThey aren't funny anymore and should be edited out. Otherwise, It is a great show.

5-0 out of 5 stars should have been more than 5 shows
DON'T GET ME WRONG I LOVE THIS SHOW AND I STILL WATCH THE RERUNS BUT IT'S FUNNY HOW STEVE HARVEY GETS ON A DVD FIVE SHOWS WHILE FRIENDS,FRASIER,ER, GET THE WHOLE FIRST SEASON....ITS NOT RIGHT!!!...BUT ALL IN ALL U WILL BE PLAYING THIS DVD OVER AND OVER..TILL VOL2 COMES OUT......ENJOY

5-0 out of 5 stars U must own this!
The Steve Harvey Show is 1 of the best shows out there. Steve Harevy And Cedric "The Entertainer" R great comedians. The whole cast rules. This show is halarious and full of non-stop laughter. This dvd captures the best moments of the show and has 5 of the best episodes ever created. Don't 4get Bullethead. It is a shame that Merlin Santana (who played Romeo) died because he was shot while sitting in a car. Romeo is a gr8 character. The best part of the show was when they added Lori Beth Denberg 2 the cast. I grew up watching Lori Beth Denberg on Nickelodeon's "All That". She is amazing. 4 anyone who likes, "Kings Of Comedy", u'll love this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Way, Way Too Short!
The 3 stars are for the brevity of the disc itself. The content gets 5 stars. The problem we have here is that this should have been a 6 hour (at least) program instead of 80 minutes. Magnificent black artists are only touched upon and many, many are left out all together. The dvd has 6 chapters: THE DANCERS, THE DIVAS, MALE SINGERS, JAZZ & SWING, ROCK & SOUL and HIP HOP. So you have about 10 minutes on the history of black jazz and swing music...yeah, right! And think of the wealth of information disclosed when we are treated to 10 minutes on the history of rock and soul music. RIDICULOUS! It's like getting a smell of the bar-b-q and not being able to taste it. Don't get me wrong....what there is is fantastic. It's just that there is so little! It's so brief that it almost seems to cut off mid-sentance. The rich legacy of entertainment left to us by Sammy Davis Jr is wrapped up in about 2 minutes. The Nicholas Brothers get a little more time but still not nearly enough. It IS probably worth the money but don't expect more than an 80 minute overview of wonderful black entertainers who should have been given a helluva lot more time out of respect for their magnificent efforts. This doesn't apply to the boring Rap & Hip Hop segment. That's all mouth and attitude...not entertainment, and self-confessed players and hustlers of limited talent like Ice T (see "Pimps Up, Ho's Down) should have stayed at home. ... Read more
