5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent true life World War II suspense story!
Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer give outstanding performances as Monsr. Hugh O'Flaherty(Peck) and SS Col. Herbert Kapler(Plummer). The action and suspense of the movie keeps it going at a brisk pace. The story follows Peck as a Vatican official trying to save Italian Jews and Allied escaped POW's from the hands of the German SS. Plummers portrayal as Col. Kapler is both chilling and frightening, especially when he personally executes a Catholic priest who was caught helping the Resistance. Peck's portrayal of Father O'Flaherty is very moving to watch. The intelligence and compassion of this man truly shows through and shows how much Father O'Flaherty deserved the awards and decorations he received from the Allies after the war. And the ending is very surprising as well! It is also a plus having the movie shot in Rome where the actual events took place. A truly classic movie. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazon bias
erik reitz review is incredibly bigoted and hostile toward catholics - however i wrote a review pointing this out and incredibly you don't post my review but retain his - another thing i've noticed that amazon allows bigoted views against western civ, christianity, catholicism, anglos, men, heterosexuals etc to be posted & while some people will reply exposing this bigotry amazon runs the double standard of allowing unrestrained bigotry on one side while censoring the other side - you claim to moderate fairly yet what you do is allow left wing bigotry unchecked and the rest censored - amazon has presented a hostile evironment to the above mentioned censored majority of which i am a part - i cringe everytime i shop amazon's reviews that my sensibilities will not only be ignored but trampled and violated

4-0 out of 5 stars The Scarlet & The Black
Great Job ... Acting, Location & Story. Its nice to see one more positive telling of the Church during the war. Not too many people know that the Chief Rabi of Rome during and immediately after the war, Israel Zolii, was so impressed by the Christians in Rome who tried to protect Jews from nazi persecution, that he was baptised as Catholic shortly after the end of the war. He took for his Christian name Eugene ... the same first name as Pope Pius XII, whom he especially admired as a friend and protector of Jews. He died as a devout Catholic.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best!
This movie never gets enough credit! This is one of the best war time movies ever and with Mr. Peck's passing this is a must see for Peck fans who have not seen this movie. Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer in one of his best roles play a cat and mouse game during WW2. The acting is fantastic and there is a lot of suspense! A must see! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must-have for Denver Collectors!
A fascinating account of the highlights and hidden facets of the convoluted and paradoxical life of the late John Denver.
FIRST THE GOOD: It is worth owning if only for the rare insights which stem from the input of friend Hal Thau and first wife Annie. The film exemplifies the spirit-lifting optimism that made John so popular, while exploring the deep-rooted quirks in his upbringing that drove him to excel. That spirit is palpable throughout as a result of competent film-making.
NOW THE BAD: Lowe's portrayal of Denver, though done with superior attention to John's idiosyncratic gestures, still makes JD appear as a self-centered, clueless but lovable jerk with none of the poise, charm, deep introspection of his real-life counterpart. Those of us who loved John knew him as a deeply commited and thoughtful individual, little of which is evident here.
Some of the script input is obviously the result of Annie's point of view, and while fascinating, does not delve so much into John's view of the same situations. For that one will have to turn to the book on which the movie is very loosely based.
Also those that have read the book TAKE ME HOME, and are familiar with John's work will find a number of historical inaccuracies.
Despite all this I highly reccomend it to Denver fans and anyone interested in his bio. However, I would not use this DVD to introduce John Denver to someone not already familiar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rachel Blakely Shines in this Film
Rachel Blakely, star of "Neighbours, "Tales of the South Seas" and "The Lost World" brings many wonderful moments of charm, grace and action to this entertaining film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rachel Blakely does it again!
This is a very enjoyable action/adventure story. It takes place on a cruise liner where two powers of state hold a sumit meeting to talk over peace negotiations. Terrorists take over the ship and hold everyone hostage. Rachel Blakely shines as a British officer who kicks some serious terrorist butt and helps to save the passengers of the endangered ship.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another stunning preformance by RACHEL BLAKELY!
This movie was very action packed all of the characters did a good job. But,I have to say that the character that stood out the most was Brittany Cooper, who is played by the lovely, and talented Rachel Blakely. As always her presence shown beautifully on camera, and she definitely kicked some chinese terrorist booty!! You go girl! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Rachel Blakely is dynomite!
Rachel Blakely (of Arthur Conan Doyle's THE LOST WORLD fame) gives a most excellent performance in this thriller. The special effects are pretty good as well. This is definately a keeper!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rachel Blakely is fantastic in this movie
Having seen this movie a numerous of times already, I keep enjoying to watch it. Not only Joe Lando and Rob Estes are good in it, but Rachel Blakely (some might know her as Gaby Willis in Neighbours & Marguerite Krux in The Lost World) kicks some butt as well *grin*. She steals the show from the male lead characters, playing a security person on the ship. ... Read more

I thought it had great apeal. Very twisted turn of events that keep you hanging and guessing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Re-Release of "Victim of Love"
A word to the wise: I purchased this for my wife's Pierce Brosnan collection only to discover that it is a re-titled re-release of "Victim of Love", which we already owned on DVD. Buyer beware: two versions of the same DVD are being listed for sale simultaneously under different titles and packaging without any disclosure of the duplicate content.

4-0 out of 5 stars Steamy, Hot Movie
I was not expecting a good movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend this movie. Pierce Bronson is sexy and so is Jo Beth Williams. A real thriller-under-rated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Victim Of Love
For a TV movie(not cable)this is one of the sexiest shows I've ever seen. Pierce is a handsome rogue and JoBeth is one of my favorites. This thriller never lets up till the final moments of the film. A shocker. Just as you think you've clenched it, bingo here you go again. Would recomend it, simply for the fun of watching Brosnan and Williams steam up the screen. The dance scene was pretty well worth it too as was the visit to the local museum! Buy it and enjoy.

1-0 out of 5 stars victim of plagiarism
This wanna-be Hitchcockian thriller shamelessly rips off scenes from Vertigo, Psycho, and North by Northwest, with the music of Richard Stone imitation Bernard Herrmann via Pino Donaggio. Psychologist Jobeth Williams is dating Pierce Brosnan, the same man who it turns out is also dating her patient, Virginia Madsen. Or is he? The time it takes Jobeth to realise such a faux pas makes her seem rather dim, though she appears to be preoccupied in showing how she thinks she can do sexy. It is unfortunate that her (many!) love scenes with Pierce play so awkwardly, though having Pierce recite Edgar Allan Poe badly doesn't help. Madsen probably comes off best. She manages to invest emotion and truth in what is a cliche role of the woman scorned. Jobeth has some tiny moments, particularly with her friend played by the baritone-voiced Georgia Brown. Director Jerry London gives us a juggling clown to represent Jobeth's confusion, and rain to accompany Billie Holiday singing Stormy Weather. ... Read more

It gradually dawns on therapist Tess Parker (JoBeth Williams) that the shocking claims her patient Carla (Virginia Madsen) makes about a former lover dovetail to a startling degree with facts she learns about Paul Tomlinson (Pierce Brosnan), the smooth English professor she's currently wacky over. Is Paul merely a feckless womanizer, or are there darker secrets lurking about his former wife's demise? You won't care if you're a Pierce Brosnan fan (and if you aren't, you still won't find out), because this made-for-TV erotic thriller is basically a vehicle for his talents. There is asolid performance by Brosnan, who cleverly uses deficiencies in the dialogue to suggest his character's duplicity. The lovely and nervous Virginia Madsen is always in search of an emotional memory not hinted at in the script. JoBeth Williams looks like she'd rather be saying, "Don't go into the light!" Jagged Edge meets Spellbound, then gets bored and has 9½ Weeks over for the weekend; they get drunk late at night and try to pretend they're variously North by Northwest and Suspicion. Plunders the most unmistakable of Hitchcock set pieces to string together numerous erotic interludes, surprisingly to no ill effect. --Jim Gay ... Read more

Thicker waistlines and thinner dialogue don't stop I Spy Returns from being an enjoyable reunion for the stars of the hip '60s TV series. From 1965 to 1968, Bill Cosby and Robert Culp were the ultimate "salt and pepper" duo, playing super-spies Scott and Robinson (respectively) in a show that combined Mission: Impossible intrigue with witty banter and effortless biracial chemistry (at a time when such pairings were still considered experimental). A quarter-century later, Culp was still delightfully acerbic, Cosby had become a TV icon, and I Spy Returns gave them a happy excuse to wreak havoc in Vienna, where Robinson's son (George Newbern) and Scott's daughter (Salli Richardson) are freshly minted spies subjected to unwanted fatherly meddling. It's TV fluff from start to finish, but Cosby and Culp are still cool together, even when they're buck-naked captives of a sniveling British mercenary. It ain't pretty, but it's sure to get a laugh. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Old TV show reunion, unsuccessful as usual
With the exception of the rather long series of Alien Nation reunion movies, few reunion TV-movies showing old starts in their old roles have had much success, and this funnied-up resurrection of Kelly and Scotty follows the rule predictably. Getting the progeny of the two heroes together as the new generation spies was stupid enough, but the writers couldn't resist the urge to make the show some sort of parody of itself. There is no suspense, and it's impossible to take the characters at all seriously. On the plus side, it cannot possibly be as bad as the Eddie Murphy bigscreen version is bound to be....

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reunion Movie!!
I saw this movie in the early 90's,and it was nice to see Cosby and Culp together again after over 20 years since the late 60's.Although Robert Culp did not become as famous as Bill Cosby.I think Culp is a superb although unfortunately an underrated actor.I'm glad to see that this fine reunion movie will be on video soon!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Please. Please, Please, put the SMDM on dvd....
Oh Man, how long have I waited for this. I loved the SMDM back in the day. I guess I was around 9 or 10 when it first came on. From the pilot episode to the last one, I was hooked. Did you know that the UK and other parts of Europe already have the SMDM and also the Bionic Woman on dvd? My question is, Why havent we got these classic shows on dvd already? These are American shows. We should have gotten these first. Dont get me wrong, I have nothing against our British friends for having them, but why neglect us here in America? I just hope that Universal wakes up and discovers that there IS an American market for these classic shows to be put on dvd format. If they can put CRAP like Friends and Celebrity Mole, and other lame shows on dvd, why not great, classic shows like the SMDM on dvd? Im still waiting....

5-0 out of 5 stars The Six Million Dollar Man Will be Reincarnated
I am 14. I know 14 is a little young to know about thes series, but I saw a few reruns on tv. I really hope the studio will release this title on DVD. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent adaptation.
I still place Stuart Woods's "Chiefs" among the best police dramas ever written. Since I learned that a TV adaptation of the book was made, I've always wanted to see it - and, about a year ago, I finally found and bought the DVD release of the series (which seems to be unavailable outside R2). I actually did not expect much, but what I received surprised me - and it was a positive surprise. The series is an excellent adaptation of the novel and manages to do it justice, which is a rarity... as is the fact that very little of the book's plot is omitted. Certainly, some of the details - such as Will Henry's growing obsession with the mysterious murders, and the technical sides of his investigation - have to be treated superficially, but every important subplot and aspect of the book is present in the film; consequently, the series manages to be just as thrilling and involving as the novel. Amusingly enough, the credits on the box of the DVD misled me slightly - I assumed Charlton Heston, Keith Carradine and Billy Dee Williams would be playing the three chiefs, chronologically; of course, this is not the case. Of course, a Collector's Edition, with some extras and a commentary (perhaps even by Stuart Woods?) would be even better, since the DVD I have is bare-bones, with only a spartan menu and chapter selection, but that's unlikely to happen with a TV series. Then again, it's been done with, for instance, "IT!", so... you never know. If a Special Edition DVD is ever released, I'll certainly buy it in addition to the standard one I have.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
This was one of the BEST movies I have ever seen. This movie touches on everything from Domestic Violence to Racism and everything in between. Danny Glover before he was super famous! Can't get much better than that!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Mini-Series with a good plot and great actors
I first watched "Chiefs" when I was about 14- my aunt taped the whole mini-series for my family, and we all enjoyed it immensly.(A bit heavy subject for a 14-year-old, but a definate eye-opener, on racism, politics AND hitchhiking!) It is about three successive police chiefs in a small Southern town, how each deals with the myriad prejudices against Colored People, and a decades-long case involving the mysterious disappearances of young boys hitchhiking through (as well as the political aspects of)the town. It is a very sad conclusion, when they discover what happenened to the boys, but an excellent series overall.
However, my mother eventually bought the VHS version when it came out, and we were very dissapointed to find that many memorable scenes were cut out- in particular, my favorite, where Billy Lee(up & coming politician & all-around good guy)invites his fellow politicians to lunch (to discuss deplorable prison conditions) -at the prison! -I would only buy the DVD edition if the WHOLE, COMPLETE series were there,(lots of room on DVD's I'm told) -a commentary on the series and book, as well as interviews with actors would also be great, if available!
Hard to pick a favorite actor here, as everyone in the movie was top-notch, but Billy Dee Williams got the best part in the whole movie, when he proclaims to the rednecked hicks that arrest him for no better reason than being a Black Man(I speak as a white chick), "My name is Tyler Watts- but you can call me "Chief"! -Well worth watching even once, if just to draw your own conclusions- but I warn you, if you like it, you'll be hooked! If you don't....well, we'll probably be hearing from you! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Chiefs
I have been a reader for 44 years, since I was 12 years old. CHIEFS is one of the best books I have ever read. It was not until I was finished with it that I found out it had been a mini-series on TV in the 80s. The story is full of honorable men doing their best against many prejudices in the South. It took 43 years to solve the mystery of the missing youths and who their killer was. I said to my husband - boy you'd like this if it were a movie. The snaking plot(s) fit right in with what I like to watch on TV. A touch of the Old West, small town living, Southern attitudes, and heroes!

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining mini-series
I greatly enjoyed this three-part series when it was televised back in 1983. Based on the novel by Stuart Woods (which I later read), it covers three generations of police officers in the town of Delano, Georgia, and the deadly secret that they all will face. For its first chief, Delano decides to hire "a good man," so Wayne Rogers (Trapper John on "MASH") is the choice. Next was the corrupt officer (Brad Davis), followed by the town's first black officer (Billy Dee Williams at the height of heartthrob-ness, having just been Lando in "Star Wars"). Charlton Heston and Keith Carradine have recurring roles. I would enjoy seeing this again on DVD, though I wonder if it would be a full release or the 3.5-hour edited version I've heard about on VHS. ... Read more
