It may sound like a gimmick--The Greatest '70s Cop Shows is a compilation of first episodes from Starsky and Hutch, Police Woman, S.W.A.T., The Rookies, and Charlie's Angels--but this DVD anthology really opens one's eyes to the look and feel of dramatic television during the so-called Me Decade. Except for Angels, which never wavered from its self-mocking, glossy action/stiff exposition playbook, these cop-program debuts (four of them from Aaron Spelling) import much of their fluid camera movement, multiple points-of-view, and dynamic, often wordless storytelling from the era's rough-and-tumble action movies (e.g., The French Connection). Which is to say these shows may be dumb but not necessarily cheesy (except Angels' post-modern cheese). There is a lot to admire about the opening ambush in S.W.A.T.'s "The Killing Ground," the hard-boiled camaraderie of Police Woman's "The End Game," and especially the reckless physicality and ironic jokes of Starsky and Hutch's "Savage Sunday." --Tom Keogh ... 5-0 out of 5 stars OH.....JUST SHOOT ME!!
It was just GREAT having the chance to own this DVD ! I am a big fan of America's Cop Shows and this item was really a "must -have".I just wish they could release more episodes of "The Police Woman" and "The Rookies" ( with Kate Jackson!!!), which are very interesting and which I had never watched before due to they had never been aired here in Brazil."The Angels" are "foxy" as always and you also get a chance to watch "Starski & Hutch" in the same package.

3-0 out of 5 stars More Angie, please...!
"Starsky & Hutch" were entertainingly silly for a couple of years, as were "Charlie's Angels", and "The Rookies" looks earnest but dated and tad naive. "SWAT" is essentially a shoot-em-up with few characters you get to know at all.

Interestingly, the one out of the five (and the one NOT produced by Aaron Spelling) that is easliy the most legitimate cop drama is "Police Woman" with Angie Dickinson--- it feels like a damn movie... something the other four certainly do not.

Funny how memories have written-off this series as a single, older version of a Charlie's Angel who still has her badge but does nothing else but turn "tricks", when, in fact, "Police Woman" seems to be the most sophisticated of the lot; it's aged beautifully.

Instead of packaging this mismatch of fun but otherwise unconnected 70s cop-show memories, let's see a DVD release of at LEAST "Police Woman"s first season, as I seem to remember it was the best year of the show--- and certainly quite removed from the other more comic-strip, though watchable, entries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back when TV was great
Let me tell you, I LOVE this dvd. I have been waiting for these shows to be released on dvd format for a long time. You get the first episodes of 5 classic 70's cop shows.

1. Charlies Angels
2. The Rookies
3. Starsky and Hutch
4. Swat
5. Police Woman

I love all these shows, but I espacially love Police Woman and Starsky and Hutch. I grew up watching these shows, and there is not a cop show today that can hold a candle to these shows. I have some Charlie's Angels on dvd, and Starsky and Hutch on VHS from Columbia House, but I have missed watching Police Woman in over 25 years. I had a serious crush on Angie Dickinson back in the day. This is a great dvd of classic tv, when tv was entertaining, not all this reality crap that is on now. I just hope they realease more Police Woman and Starsky and Hutch on dvd. Its well worth the price and then some. Get it....

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is The One I Been Waiting For!!!
I am so glad they are bring out those old cop shows out on DVD. I remember watching those shows like Charlie's Angels, Starsky & Hutch,S.W.A.T, The Rookies and Police Woman back then when I was a child in the 70's. I also watched those shows when they were on TVLand til they took all the cop shows off on TVLand. I brought the DVD and I have too tell you this is the best DVD ever!!! My favorite ones on there are S.W.A.T and Charlie's Angels. You Must Buy this DVD to enjoy!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun!
If like me, you're a fan of '70s pop culture...you'll want to add this DVD to your collection. Sure, you'll read reviews that refer to the "cheesiness" factor. Forget all that. I hate the word "cheesy." It assumes that everything that's current and hip will always be cool and in fashion. How short-sighted. But I digress. Watching "The Greatest '70s Cop Shows" brought me back to a time when TV was truly exciting. You get the following first episodes:

"Starsky & Huch" - "Savage Sunday"
"Charlie's Angels" - "Hellride"
"The Rookies" - "Concrete Valley, Neon Sky"
"S.W.A.T." - "The Killing Ground"
"Police Woman" - "The End Game"

My favorite out of this bunch is the "Police Woman" episode. I had not seen that show in at least 25 years and it holds up very well. Angie Dickinson is extremely sexy, sensitive, feminine and tough. What an awesome, groundbreaking show.

The sound on the disc is terrific, the picture is probably the best we're going to get...and the price is right. Never mind those big-budget theatrical versions of these shows...they don't hold a candle to the originals. Buy this and go back to the groovy '70s. You'll have a great time! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent movie...horrible transfer
I was curious about this movie primarily to see the comedic and cinematic development of a young Richard Pryor(pre the Toy and Superman 3 debacles)...the movie in my opinion DOES stand the test of time considering that it was made 34 years ago. There were some cool cameos(a young Paul Mooney in the background)and of course an ensemble cast of some heavy weight & familiar African american actors..i.e..Billy Dee Williams(starring in Brian's Song the following year), Moses Gunn, Rosie Grier, Glynn Turman and Robert Hooks(a superb actor and father of noted actor/director Kevin Hooks). Surprisingly, the movie holds up..an example of this is the reference to the Moses Gunn character being a physics teacher from Howard University who joined the war effort thus surprising the racist Stephen Boyd character for being a learned Black man. My main gripe is the transfer...yes..this was a Aaron Spelling made for tv movie but if the movie was remastered it would have been a hell of a lot more enjoyable to watch...but again...it WAS worth a gander to see some familiar actors during their prime.....it's worth a look.

3-0 out of 5 stars I thought the movie was ok, for the time it was made.
due to the fact that it is an older movie, it has a good plot, story line and very good acting. it doesn't have the best of sound or the quility of a digial picture. which in point was part of the reason I didn't get into this movie as well as others. but it's worth 3 stars. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good mystery
I have read several plot analysis written by the "pros" and they seem to be all wrong. There is no terrorist on the plane. The story is about a letter that is found in the first class airport lounge after an international flight has taken off. The letter states that there will be murders before the flight lands. The best part is the "WHO IS THE KILLER" set-up. Farrah is in one of her first roles and just as lovely as ever. Adam Brooks talent was not shown enough. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Talent
I've seen most of the 1st 2 seasons and some of 3 and 4.
I saw seance for the 1st time the other week and thought it was really well done and a great performance by Jaclyn Smith.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Blast From The Past
When these shows first came out, I was eleven years old. I really didn't get a chance to see much of this first season when it ran in 1976, but I knew all about the three women who were the Angels thanks to tons of magazine coverage. The show was a phenomenom. Everybody had the Farrah poster!

Jump to today. This set is a very nice, complete view of season 1 (the only season Farrah was on the show). It includes the pilot and 22 episodes. Some are good and hold up with time. A couple are clinkers. But, the sound and video reproduction are good and it is easy to see why everyone was so spellbound by the show - Kate, Farrah and Jackelyn were stunning. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Frogs in no way related to Kermit
"Frogs', one of the classic "B" movie titles from 1972 has always excited alot of heated debate about whether it's the worst "drive-in" type feature to come out of the 1970's, or whether in actual fact it was a bit ahead of it's time as a clever commentary on man's just deserts for wrecking the native environment with his pollution. I'm sure its envirnmental message was largely unintended but nevertheless I always find viewing this film a creepy experience with its abundance of creepy crawlies just waiting to strike.

Set in the beautiful wilds of the Florida keys, "Frogs", tells the story of aging Chemical Magnate Jason Crockett played by Hollywood veteran Ray Milland who lives on an isolated estate in the keys and who once a year on the 4th of July, which also happens to be his birthday, gathers together his assorted disfunctional family for a big birthday celebration. The entire action of the film takes place over this weekend when after a boating accident the family finds itself playing host to Pickett Smith (Sam Elliot in one of his most remembered macho roles). Pickett is a freelance photographer doing an article on pollution in the area for an ecology magazine and once arrived finds many strange things occuring on the estate where the assorted reptiles and native animals which include snakes of all kinds, lizards, crocodiles, and spiders begin to pick off one member of the group at a time in assorted grisly deaths until Pickett accompanied by granddaughter Karen Crockett (greatly underrated actress Joan Van Ark) sensibly decide to flee the estate reluctantly leaving Jason to a grisly fate at the hands of the rampaging Frogs who invade the house. The final shot of the film which sees all the lights go out in the estate mansion is an errie conclusion.

"Frogs", while viewed by many as a dumb story full of laughable situations, always succeeds in sending an uneasy chill down my spine. Having a lifelong fear of "creepy crawlies", and an absolute phobia about snakes this for me is an horrific story. The truly beautiful on location photography of the Florida wasteland gives the film a top class look while its sheer isolation adds tremendously to the horror element of the story having a group of people far from the outside world and at the mercy of the assorted animals bent on revenge. Indeed I agree with past reviewers that Frogs at first glance dont appear to be too frightening as the supposed creatures on the attack. The numerous shots of Frogs observing the action from various vantage points while other assorted reptiles do the actual killing, gives the film a good sinister touch and adds to the general creepiness. The film does benefit from some interesting casting choices. Veteran Hollywood legend Ray Milland plays the Patriarch of the clan with great authority and a cynical quality that goes well with the story of the creatures finally getting back at him for inflicting years of toxic sprays on their native environments in the area. Joan Van Ark an actress I've long admired and who is still best remembered for her long running role as Val on "Knots Landing", has the best fleshed out character as the grand daughter who falls for Pickett Smith during the horrifying weekend. She certainly is the most appealing character on the island and she and Sam Elliot make a most attractive couple who you do find yourself hoping will get away from the strange goings on at Jason Crockett's estate.

Certainly "Frogs", is no masterpiece but it's an enjoyable horror tale and still makes uneasy viewing if you are in anyway not confortable about most reptiles at close quarters. Indeed this film has earned immortality because of the incredibly vivid lobby card showing a Frog with a human hand coming out of its mouth....an unforgettable horror image. Happily this memorable image was chosen as the cover for the video when it was first released. I remember as an eleven year old boy in Melbourne seeing this card displayed outside the theatre where "Frogs", was playing and being scared to death by it! Needless to say my parents would never allow me to see "Frogs', back then even though I badly wanted to! Enjoy the assorted slimy, creepy crawlies out for revenge against careless man in the chilling "Frogs".

2-0 out of 5 stars Quite Awful in that Fun Sort Of Way - But Still Kind of Dull
Frogs hopping up and down on top of you...hmmmmm.....now what? They don't have teeth. They don't bite or spit venom. They can't tie you up in a web. They just sit there and ribbit. Wow - that's one great premise for a horror movie. Well, thank goodness the film also throws in other reptiles and creatures to kill off the stupid characters one by one. Unfortunately, although the film's concept SCREAMS of campy tongue-in-cheek horror, the actual film is a pretty pedestrian animal-revenge story played straight. The film was originally marketed as a straightforward horror film as well (just watch the trailer on the DVD). Still, there are some unintentionally funny moments, and watching poor Ray Milland try to save face in a dreck role (and he does) is always rewarding. Sam Elliott in a very early part (as "Pickett...Pickett Smith") is the brawny hero-hunk who gets to fight off snakes and gators. Joan Van Ark and some other upper-crust victims round out the cast of fish food. It's kind of like "Dynasty" in the swamps. The poster was always the best part of this movie (it made the cover of "Famous Monsters" at the time!), but fans of 70's low-budget horror-may find this has a few moments of genius (maybe the frogs jumping up and down in the cake scene?). To each their own. Ribbit.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely appauling.
Let's cut right to the chase by saying that this movie reeks, and should never be viewed by any human being. However since I'm a reviewer here it's not that easy. Sure it's a blast to make fun of and there's lots of material to work with, but this is the review on the movie itself, not how much fun you can have with it. The "plot", if you can stretch the word that far, is about a wealthy man who has been wantonly destroying wildlife in the Florida Bayou finds that a swarm of murderous frogs is closing in on his own mansion habitat. Having said that, Frogs is a dumb little horror movie, and how much you enjoy it depends on your tolerance for wooden acting, silly death scenes, and lots of stock footage of reptiles and amphibians just sitting around. Since I have a since of humor, that spells F-U-N for me.:) In all seriousness however, The Crocker mansion rests on a secluded island in the middle of a swamp. After freelance photographer Pickett Smith is nearly killed while canoeing, by drunken idiot Clint, Smith is invited up to the family estate. There he meets Clint's "cute" sister miserable grand-pappy and about 12 other idiots who act just obnoxious enough for us to cheer when they eventually get eaten up. Even by the standard of B-movies, this one has a whole lot of blah-blah scenes. Dialogue such as "Where's Maybelle and Grover?" and "What happened to Iris?" permeate every scene. In order to best showcase the whole "frogs" theme, each and every sequence in the movie is followed by a shot of dozens of slimy, writhing frogs. They never really do anything, but we know they're there, just waiting. The clan has gathered at the mansion to celebrate several birthdays, drink a lot and do a lot of complaining about how 'loud those damn frogs are'. Nasty old grandpa has decided to poison the frogs, but since his handyman has yet to return from the creek, it's safe to assume everyone's gonna die, and in very silly ways. Snakes hang from chandeliers, lizards take over the greenhouse, and still - the frogs watch...and wait. Now here's a shocker, are ya ready? The Frogs, curiously enough, don't commit any crimes. They are basically by standards, and do absolutely nothing to harm anybody!!!! They leave it up to their buddies to do all the dirty work, while the icky amphibians simply sit in the background, enjoying the havoc. These rich snobs get snakebit, tarantula cocooned, chomped by big turtles, sucked on by leeches, and even poisoned by the world's smartest monitor lizards. Up until the final scene, when they hop gleefully on a corpse, the frogs are merely the ringleaders. To put this into the simplest terms possible, this "movie" is dumb! If Frogs is a movie you plan to seek out, I certainly couldn't talk you out of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars HOPPY HORRORS
Admit it...if you've seen this film, you have to enjoy its 70s flavor, its sophisticated tackiness and those clothes. And Les Baxter's credit for doing the music which is no more than electronic noises.
FROGS is a movie released in 1972, and even after 30 years, it maintains its quiet menace. The frogs ironically do little more than hop around but notice they are also summoning the other animals/insects, whatever...to do their bidding.
Ray Milland who sent camp to new heights with X THE MAN WITH THE XRAY EYES, is the patriarch, all spit and vinegar, confined to a wheelchair, bossing his family around, drinking, and dying we assume of fright when all the frogs get in the house.
Sam Elliott in one of his first roles gets to show off his pecs and hairy chest several times and maintain that smooth macho demeanor which you know will save the day.
Joan van Ark got to practice for all those years on KNOTS LANDING with her role as the sweet and sensible one.
Judy Pace is an absolute hoot as the fashion model who dresses to kill while on a picnic.
Adam Roarke, Nicholas Cortland, David Gilliam, Lynn Borden and the rest of the cast get to emote and have their own death scenes. Holly Foster as Iris gets to perform in the Tallulah Bankhead School of Acting in her death throes in the swamp.
FROGS is by no means great movie making. It's a "horror" film with a message, echoed in THE BIRDS, and it's production values are minimal to say the least. Yet, in its own quiet way, it manages to chill with the knowledge that our environment is being abused, and what if this kind of thing could happen?

1-0 out of 5 stars Action! (hop, hop, hop) Cut! Brilliant!
There is something very ironic about this movie, and that is the fact that the frogs never hurt anyone. They just hop around on the corpses of people who are killed by other critters. Needless to say, this is about as riveting as it sounds. This movie is not scary. It is not funny, even in a campy way. It tries to take itself seriously and expects its audience to be somehow stirred by the sight of a lizard crawling on top of some rich schmuck who tripped and fell down... and then apparently died from shame, since I fail to see how an iguana sitting on said schmuck's abdomen caused a fatal injury. This movie does not deserve to be called stupid. It is beneath stupidity. It attempted stupidity and failed. But at least it kept Hollywood's animal wranglers busy for a day or two. Enjoy! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic DVD release
CHARLIE'S ANGELS gets a wonderful DVD release with perfect picture and two choice episodes.

Farrah Fawcett-Majors, Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson star in two stories from the memorable first season; "Night Of The Strangler" and "To Kill An Angel". The only main qualm is the lack of chapters in the episodes.

Also included is the entertaining "Angels Forever" retrospective featurette which quizzes fans of the show as well as providing footage from the show and details from later cast members including Cheryl Ladd and Tanya Roberts.

Pretty impressive DVD package all-round!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Angels are back !!!!!!!
This two-part special edition is definitely a collector's item especially for those die-hard "Charlie's Angels" fans.It features Jaclyn Smith, who deserves the recognition as the "most angelic of them all," and two of the best episodes of the series. We're not talking award-winning stuff in this dvd issue but an outstanding entertainment to "visit" the undisputed queens of the 70s television.

The episode "Night of the Strangler" shows why Jaclyn Smith lasted so long in the series. Her looks and style are timeless plus that scene in her famous white bikini is a must to see. Of course, Kate Jackson and Farrah Fawcett are on hand to complete the trio.

For the episode "To Kill An Angel," new fans will be surprise that the show is not just pure bikini's and guns. It showcases also the dramatic sides of the trio.

The cover alone is worth the trip, so buy it now and collect! A must!

5-0 out of 5 stars Charlie how do you your Angels get down
OMG, please tell me this is the first of many more to come, Having the Angels on DVD is way fun. One mishap though, NO SCENE SELECTION. But it makes up for that with the Angel Featurette and the digitally enhanced audio and video.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trapezoidal
Jack Palance plays an insane villain who takes over a mining colony on a planet with a population of about 12 (who spend most of the film hiding from Jack in a cave). He uses his newfound power as head (and now sole) miner to crash his only interstellar ship, manned by a robot, into the headquarters of the galactic government on earth (actually, Ontario Place), thus causing so much damage that it takes the government all of 10 minutes to make repairs. Jack then demands that he be made supreme dictator on the strength of this demonstration, and apparently also because of his ability to cast cool spinning holograms of himself. The earth government is too afraid to counterattack Palance (who no longer has the means to even leave his planet), so it looks like he'll get his wish, except that several heroic types hijack an unfinished battleship in order to launch a counterattack. Once on Jack's planet, they must defeat about 20 slow, clumsy robots that look like mini-fridges with legs and which can be taken out if you hit them once over the head with a staff. Luckily for Jack, all the good guys are absolutely incompetent morons (although not as incompetent as the good miners who stand still long enough so the robots can electrocute them in battle). Oh yeah, there's one robot who turns good and gains the ability to teleport for no apparent reason and which, for comic relief purposes, falls in love with the lead female (which means it must consider itself to be either a male or a lesbian). Some poor mutant children (they look like Edgar Winter) show up to pull at your heartstrings, and there's production design straight out of Space: 1999 and Battlestar Galactica which could give you a bad case of disco fever.

The movie never gets dull, but is not that as funny as my description might make it sound. It's not as good as anything from Towers' amazing Franco period, but is far better than his dismal South African period (apartheid made filming there cheap in the 1980s). The only real reason for getting this movie is out of some bizarre nostalgia for the late 1970s/early 80s or for Palance's performance which is so entertaining that you might forget that his character is only slightly more threatening than someone on life support.

1-0 out of 5 stars Makes Buck Rogers Look LIke Citizen Kane
Beyond your wildest imagination.... beyond belief is more like it. In the wake of STAR WARS came the cheap knock-offs like STAR CRASH and THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME, which placed the blame on H.G. Wells. Jack Palance, once again, is the evil villain, trying to force the moon colony (the Earth is a wasteland from the great robot wars) into making him their dictator because he controls the only supply of medicine that counters the effects of radiation (I didn't know that there was radiation on the moon). Scientist Barry Morse, his son (Nicholas Campbell) and the beautiful Anne-Marie Martin (billed here as Eddie Benton) make off in the Star Streak to stop the dastardly Palance. They are accompanied by SPARKS, a robot with more than a passing resemblance to a trash can. Meanwhile, Carol Lynley of POSEIDON ADVENTURE fame leads a pathetic group of rebels. I cannot believe that the gang at MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 overlooked this turkey. BLUE UNDERGROUND has brought this embarrassment back to life, so fans of Grade-Z cheese will be able to experience the gentle, slow motion ballet of "time dilation." ...

Adam Brooks talent was not shown enough. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE HOTTEST SUPERCOUPLE ON TELEVISION!!!!
Johnathan and Jennifer Hart were the quintessential super sexy couple of the late 70's and early 80's!!!! They rocked as the jet-setting, totally in love, detective duo!!! They had it all, wealth, glamour, passion, and no kids!!!
I just loved the way they stumbled on to those unexpected exciting adventures and murder mysteries. They made it look so easy!!! This show worked on so many levels, you had Jennifer who was sexy as hell, and you didn't hate her because she was so beautiful. She was just so lovable!!! Then there was Johnathan, handsome, but not beefcake, had a great sense of humor, and the guy was completely smitten with his adoring wife. Let's face it they had the ultimate fantasy dream marriage that only existed on prime-time television!!!
I hope we the fans of this dynamite show wont have to wait too much longer for the dvd release, and it would be nice to see a current interview with Robert Wagner & Stephanie Powers. God! I can't believe Robert Wagner turned 75 recently, he looks fantastic!!! Stephanie Powers is still pretty well preserved as well. I would also love to see a couple of her best mini-series come to dvd in America, Mistral's Daughter and Deceptions.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best 70's cop show EVA!
I can't wait till the studio gets around to releasing this.

It contains Michael Douglas' finest work and is without a doubt the best 70's cop show produced to date.

4-0 out of 5 stars Action and Drama, S.F.-Style
THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO was one of the better crime dramas of the 70's, featuring screen veteran Karl Malden as Lieutenant Mike Stone and rising star Michael Douglas as Inspector Steve Keller. The series was produced by Quinn Martin and filmed on location in the City By The Bay.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about STREETS, besides the solid scripts and beautiful location scenery, was the powerhouse roster of guest stars. The series featured performances by many top actors from both new and old Hollywood, including Martin Sheen, Joseph Cotten, James Woods, Ida Lupino, John Ritter, Leslie Nielsen, Patty Duke, Nick Nolte, Larry Hagman and even a young Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Michael Douglas left the series in 1976 to pursue a movie career. His final episode was the two-part fifth season premiere, "The Thrill Killers", about a radical organization that kidnaps an entire jury. The story was inspired by the Patricia Hearst kidnapping case, which was still making headlines at the time.Douglas was replaced by Richard Hatch for the final year.

Several volumes of STREETS episodes were released on VHS back in 1998 but are now out of print. It would be great to see entire seasons of the drama released on DVD.

H.G. Wells' The Shape of Things to Come is so deliriously bad that it begs inclusion in any collection of 1970s kitsch. It's a disco-flavored variant of TV's Buck Rogers in the 25th Century--just another no-budget rider on the coattails of Star Wars. Only a fool would perceive even a slight connection to Wells's classic novel, to which this misleadingly titled cheese-fest is ostensibly a sequel. Their careers in sorry decline, Jack Palance, Carol Lynley, Barry Morse (late of TV's Space: 1999), and John Ireland look embarrassed as they wrestle with a wearisome post-apocalyptic plot that pitches Morse, a pair of Ken-and-Barbie heroes, and their quirky robot (of course) against megalomaniac emperor Palance, who controls a drug needed for survival of moon-based colonists. Prior to directing this laughable mess, George McCowan had helmed episodes of several prominent TV action series of the '70s, but here he devolves into moribund hackwork. This is a ham sandwich sans bread, from a time when stale sci-fi was spreading like mold on George Lucas's leftovers. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more
