It reminded me greatly of the film The Core in various parts, in fact I think that The Core took a great deal from this low budget sci-fi than people are willing to admit. The plot is quite simple, it's a save the from destruction movie, with your obligatory bad guy who finds his conscience at the last minute and saves the others by sacrificing his own life, the gruesome death of a likeable crew member (Rodney) and the exciting ride in the bowels of the earth by the survivors trying to make it to the surface in one piece! Of course there are other baddies in that the Deep Core Machine they are using has been built and funded by the Chinese who want to use it as weapon at some point and the sleazy American bad Daryl guy played with gusto by the dead pan actor James Russo gets his just deserts at the end. It is nothing spectacular but it is good fun to watch! The special effects aren't all that brilliant though they do have their moments, the finding of a huge diamond cavern is one of them, the lasers on the Deep Core machine another, and I thought the lava flow was pretty good too! All in all this is quality cheese, and I really enjoyed it and I'm not ashamed to admit to it online!
Deep Core is based on the same basic premise as 2003's The Core - Man has screwed up the earth and has to tunnel down into the earth to fix it. The Core is clearly the better of the two movies. Deep Core, on the other hand, has all of the same elements: a ship (The Core's is a lot better looking), a crew, a few nuclear warheads, a person that gets killed by lava, and a person that sacrifices themselves for the rest of the group. Once you get passed those basic similarities, Deep Core is but a pour precursor to the later film. It has three good actors: Wil Wheaton, Terry Farrell and Bruce McGill; the rest are generally overly dramatic. There are a few special effects that don't look all that bad (such as the cutting scenes). All of the earth-quake-type scenes look rather fake and the ship looks poorly suited to the type of work that it was designed for. Overall, its not a bad film, but if you have a choice watch The Core, not Deep Core.
It was recommended by Wil on his site (see url below) yesterday so we hopped down to the video store and rented it. It's cheesy and fun and a great movie. Nice death scene, Wil....

Apparently the creators of this movie disagree. They seemed to be more focused on the super drill which can bore to the center of the earth and provide power for the world. Little does the money grubbing drill owner know that this will cause the end of the world and a drastic outbreak of toxic shock. And apparently this toxic shock can affect the male population and is indeed caused by bad drinking water. I think some writer was sleeping during his junior high health classes. Even though I give this movie one star, I think you should see it. It's so terrible it's funny. While you're at it, rent Octopus too, that is another submarine classic. That way you can explore the ocean to your heart's content.
STORY: People from the year 2099 living on environmentally decimated planet earth decide to return to 1999 in a time traveling submarine to fix history. The problem is to stop a new big energy project from being started up in 1999. This is what caused all of the 2099 troubles. But from beginning to end not only is movie messed up by implausible plots, they are carried out by cliché people. The greedy energy broker, his sometimes homicidal, sometimes humantistic security specialist; who used to be a Special Forces Vietnam killer, then mercenary ... and now this. Mixed in with this mischigas are environmental terrorists who launch an attack against the new energy station; just as the Nautilius arrives in 1999 from the future. Let's not forget the inept U.S. Air Force which cannot manage to stop anyone from doing anything. Clichés on top of clichés. As a time travel movie, the 1960 H.G. Wells-inspired movie Time Machine was infinitely better than this flick. With all of the new computer and special effects technology the producer, screenwriter, and director should have done a lot better. Moreover, with new genres springing from movies such as Alien, Star Wars, Lost in Space .... and on and on ... serving as positive role models, there is no excuse in 1999 for such a lousy movie as Nautilus. Save your time and bypass this awful movie.
Many other flaws but I will let you decide.. I am a Sci-Fi fan so I gave it 2 stars ... Read more | |

But, if you're a somewhat discriminating filmgoer, you're going to feel a little bewildered by the ending. It seems as though the director was told (I'm guessing) that there was no money left, so he had better end it right there, and try to extract some vague message, such as "just because she gives . . . doesn't mean she's not going to put a knife in my back!" Or, even better, "never trust a blonde!"
I wouldn't buy it, but if it's a cheap hire and your bored why not hire it and see for yourself? Bold & The Beautiful soap fans should note "Eric Forrester" plays the role of Psychiatrist in this film.
