Definite kid-pleaser
My three-year-old daughter fell in love with this the first time we borrowed it from the library. I enjoyed it myself; my only gripe is Conchata Ferrell's performance. This usually very talented actress seems bored to tears and injects absolutely no feeling into her role as Thumbelina's mother. It's as if she was directed to perform as stoically as possible. I don't get it at all. I am also not impressed with Carrie Fisher's singing here. I know she is capable of singing quite beautifully, I just don't think the folkish songs in this tale are well suited to her instrument. It's hard to pull off such dirges unless the singer has that ethereal, almost mediaeval quality to her voice (think Loreena McKennitt, Mediaveal Baebes). But those minor complaints are of no consequence whatsoever to the intended audience. Children will certainly be enchanted! It's witty script and a fun production.

The Little Thumb with a Big Heart
"Thumbelina" is a fantastic retelling of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, "Little Thumb".

Produced in 1983 (and released the following year), as part of Shelley Duvall's charming live-action "Faerie Tale Theatre", the narrative is told with good humour, imagination, and a great sense of fun. The magnificent cast adds much colour and warmth to the proceedings. In particular, Carrie Fisher, in the title role, delivers a captivating performance. She makes an extremely attractive heroine, not to mention one who's "more than just another pretty face". She's an absolute delight, adding her unique qualities to the role. Not only is she pint-sized in real life (although not quite as tiny as a thumb!), she has a lovely, deep voice that is quite at odds with her diminutive stature. When she sings, it is a beautiful and rewarding experience. Indeed, she sings with "an angel's voice". (This is also a highlight for any Carrie Fisher fan, as she began her career as a singer, and yet she only sings briefly in "Hannah and Her Sisters", 1986, and in the Walt Disney live-action comedy, "Sunday Drive", also released in 1986.)

Carrie Fisher is supported by equally delightful character actors. The late Burgess Meredith is in top form as Mr Mole, the second would-be husband of Thumbelina. Likewise, William Katt makes a very positive impression as the Prince of the Flower Angels.

This wonderful fairy tale is further enhanced by excellent production values, including great music, atmospheric sets, and good costumes and creatures like Mother Toad, her hapless son, Herman, the Fieldmouse, and the Swallow.

The script faithfully follows the original story, although the gender of the Fieldmouse has been changed, making for a more convincing friendship with Mr Mole to exist, as well as creating a heartfelt guardianship of Thumbelina along strictly platonic lines.

This well-written and perceptive tale ("I'm always the bride, but never the bridesmaid") makes for enchanting family entertainment. "Thumbelina" delivers a great message, too, but above all, it's storytelling at it's most memorable.

I applaud executive producer Shelley Duvall, and all involved, for giving such a wonderful gift. It's up there with Jim Henson's equally engaging "Storyteller" anthology series, produced in the late 1980s, and the "The Doll", an Emmy Award winning episode of "Amazing Stories" (of the same era).

For me, it's an extra special treat because Carrie Fisher became much more than just Princess Leia with this performance. Besides, she continues to melt me every time she smiles as the Ultimate Flower Angel! Let's hope that this "Faerie Tale Theatre" production, along with my other favourites like "Beauty and the Beast", are re-released soon. Preservation on DVD for future generations is highly recommended. ... Read more

My favorite childhood movie!
My sister and I were recently discussing our favorite movies when we were little. And this one was it. We had the disney movies and stuff, but this movie is funny and a great story. We use to watch this movie a lot! A great, perfect movie for children.

Fond Memories
I rented every volume of the Faerie Tale Theatre that the video store had at least 100 times when I was a kid. All these years later, this is the one I remember the most. That must say something for the quality of this story. Kids and parents will love it.

Fans of Space: 1999 (and there are many of them) are lavish in their praise for British producer Gerry Anderson's mid-'70s sci-fi series. They rhapsodize about provocative, seriously scientific story lines, expensive production values, the presence of star (and future Oscar® winner) Martin Landau, and more. But there are others who look at the series' glacial pace, loopy costumes and makeup, cheesy sets, primitive special effects, stilted dialogue, and self-serious tone and wonder what planet those rabid fans are from.

YEAR 2-BETTER THAN YEAR 1!!!!!!!
Season two of Space 1999 has finaly arrived and it looks better than ever! I have never seen a year two episode that wasnt worn out and scratchy, the pristine quality makes you think your seeing these episodes for the first time. There are more bonuses than the previouse disks but still no "making of" documentary. A and E has again done a great job, making the wait worth it ...
Lets hope A and E puts out more bonuses and the special "MESSAGE" episode!
Season two begins with the addition of Maya, in the episode The Metamorph. After escaping her evil father she goes to live on Moonbase Alpha. Maya has the power of molecular transformation-she can change into any lifeform in the blink of an eye. Space 1999 was one of the first-maybe THE FIRST-television series to have a morphing character, and this was way before computer animation! Her changes were feats of camera work, who can forget her eye! The Exiles is about an alien Bonny and Clyde who hold Alpha hostage. Maya does a really cool midair transformation into a panther. One moment of humanity is about robots who want to learn to kill so they can eliminate their human masters. This episode sizzles with sex! Tony and Helena are pitted against each other and end up almost killing each other. Journey to Where is about time travel going amok. This episode has much in common with many first season episodes and even ends on a grim philosophical note. The minatures of Earths' future cities are very well done and realistic. The Taybor is about a trader who will stop at nothing to get Maya- and who can blame him!
If you want the best of weird and cool sci-fi Space 1999 season two is it.

good escapist TV
I've always thought that the start of both seasons of Space 1999 weren't as much fun as the episodes that came after them. Set 5 has some good episodes and some good moments, but sets 6,7, and 8 are much more fun. As the start of season two, this set has both it's share of draw-backs and it's fun moments.

I wont waste space reviewing every episode, but I will say that The Metamorph is one of my faves! Catherine Schell is introduced as Maya in this one. New theme music, cast members, costumes, and sets are introduced as well. Dr Bergman is gone, and the main control center has now been moved underground. Maya helps to fill the void left by Bergman, and after episodes like War Games the new location of the control center makes good sense. Smart move Koenig.

Space 1999 sets 2,3,4,6,7,8 are my favorites, but 1 and 5 are important to the show and to finish your collection. There are some good epsodes in both so check them out. While you are at it, try the Space 1999 novel The Forsaken by John Muir. It sheds more light on just what happened between the program's two seasons and is an excellent read.

Some fun episodes, but poor sound too
Some of the episodes in this set have inferior sound. It's not unlistenable, but it is sub par. Fortunatley, I don't find it too distracting, but it's too bad they didn't make the sound as wonderful as the picture quality. Apart from the sound problems, I enjoyed this set.
This set contains shows from the second season of Space 1999 which was a more ridiculous season, but there are many guilty pleasure episodes here. My favorites include:
"The Metamorph" which is the first episode of the second season and introduces the new theme music and show opening. I like it. We also get a new command center, some new costumes, and the introduction of Tony and Maya. Tony brings some great humor to the show and he keeps trying to make beer. You have to admire a guy who tries to make beer and maintains a sense of humor while the moon is hurling through space. Catherine Schell is lovely as Maya the Psychlon and Maya can turn into all kinds of living creatures which is fun. She's also the sexiest woman with side-burns ever! Brian Blessed plays Mayas dad Mentor.
"The Exiles" has some very suspenseful moments as 50 missiles suddenly begin to orbit the moon and the intercepting of one of them for further study is pretty tense. There's a great sense of mystery for the first half of this episode, but then it turns silly, but I like silly. "Journey to Where" is a bit of Time Tunnel like adventure with a good performance by Freddie Jones, and "The Taybor" is extremely goofy and features some scantly clad female Alphans, and Maya turning into Mr Hyde. I wont comment on the disco dancing horny android epsiode, or the episode with the living rocks. These aren't the most realistic or brainy TV episodes ever, and Set 5 is the low point of the Space 1999 DVD sets, but there are plenty of fun moments in this one and let us never forget that Catherine Schell is the sexiest woman with side-burns ever.

loved season 2
Season two of Space 1999 is a great deal of fun if you understand exactly what to expect. Expect CHEESE with your Space 1999 and plenty of it. I think season one was great, but no matter how many times you watch a train roll down a track there's just something more compelling about a train wreck. Season 2 is a weird combination of quality elements and wacky cheesy elements that makes for entertaining viewing.

very fun stuff
It would be easy to rip this show to pieces and there are plenty of reviews here that do just that, but I have a blast watching these episodes with friends. It's a wonderful mix of cool stuff, decent acting and writing, dubious acting and writing, and just plain silly stuff that both amuses and brings back the fun of being a kid and watching this sort of monster/space adventure show. My friends and I never saw the show when it was on tv, but it's the kind of thing that the kid in us adore and it's very funny when it isn't fantastic stuff. Down With Danson!
Pontiac Moon is a movie that you have to see...because it's so terrible! There are so many parts of the movie that don't need to be there...like when Washington (Ted Danson) visits his freak brother I mean whats the point. Anyway, you must rent this movie. It will always be on the shelf at the movie rental store...because this movie STINKS!

The Amphicar is the REAL star of this flick
Sure, the movie's perfectly enjoyable on its own merits, but owners and admirers of the Amphicar, an amphibious "boat-car" manufactured in the '60s, will especially appreciate having this film in their collections. For them it will be clear that while the Pontiac of the title actually craps out underway, the Amphicar is the truly transcendent vehicle, which in the end redeems all of them. Perhaps they should have called it "Amphicar Moon."

"Pontiac Moon" Can Barely Get Out of Atmosphere
A movie with such talent as Ted Danson (Cheers, Bodyheat) and Mary Steenburgen seems bound for critical and commercial success. But when the actors try to portray a character that is out of their creative range, the movie falls apart. Washington Bellamy (Danson) is a nutty elementary school science teacher, with a shut-in wife (Steenburgen) who hasn't left the house in seven years, and a eleven year old son (Ryan Todd) that has never taken a ride in an automobile. The year was 1969, Bellamy, as was the rest of America, captivated with the voyage of the Apollo XI to the moon. Bellamy calculates that the mileage on his 1949 Pontiac Chief needs only 1776 miles before the mileage on the odometer is the exact same distance to the moon. Bellamy and his son run away without Mrs. Bellamy knowing. He has timed the car trip to reach the Spires of the Moon in Idaho right at the time the lunar module is landing on the moon. But this turns out not to be such an easy trip. They meet trouble on the highway, argue with one another, getting into a brawl at a restaurant, taking along an Indian recluse, and hide from the law.

Danson's acting is sour, trying to hard to act serious. This is the rough post-Cheers, pre-Becker era in his career, taken along this project just to stay in the spotlight as long as he can. Steenburgen is pathetic as a agorophobic, over dramatizing every line. Other than those two, as well as Todd, the movie is filled with unknown actors, accumulating one of the worst acting performances of a cast in a movie, ever. The story overall is good, but the acting just plain and simple ruined it for me. From the backside, I wish Danson would have never taken off that toupee.

a movie treat watching a good story unfold
PONTIAC MOON is a movie treat watching a simply good story unfold. I haven't had a movie catch my interest as much as this one for quite some time. It a film which relies on strong acting and strong script, with a few Greek-Navaho special effects tossed into the scenes now and then. It is a humorous quest with a story of Apollo moonwalk that is counterpoint genius on film; father and son in a 1949 Pontiac whose ignition starts a journey the moment America's Apollo first moon landing blasts off. From that point the counterpoint of Appollo and Pontiac continues until the quest is . . . well, I'll let you see the movie and find out if father and son reach their quest. To be a real quest, of course, the father and son must be detoured--in this case literally, then stranded under a desert starry sky, next stalled at a supper club which features an Americana singing contest--how I enjoyed hearing the vocal of "Kansas City"--then the Pontiac is off the trail for the father to borrow money from a family sheep-rancher relative, they are once more stalled by a cracked engine block, followed by more tense scenes of delay; all this action in a quest to reach the Spires of the Moon, Idaho before the moment of moonwalk touchdown. Together with the emphasis on the quest Danson's wife, Mary Steenburgen, has developed a phobia--she doesn't dare leave her home having holed up there for seven years. She is hyper-careful with an attitude that has put her family into mental recession. Mary has to decide whether she has the courage to follow Danson and son. Her decision leads to some interesting and amusing scenes. Will she seek her husband and arrive as an ex machina to save the day? This movie will teach you the two rules of getting along in life. To repeat, I haven't seen a movie managed as well as PONTIAC MOON for a long time. Ryan Todd, the son, together with Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson gave excellent off-beat performances.

Very Underrated movie
This must be one of the most underrated movies of the nineties. Fabulous story!! I was out of town on business, and I stumbled into the ole Blockbuster, and I thought I would give this un-known movie a try, as Im a big Mary Steenburgen fan. I was so delighted by this funny, serious, and heart touching movie, that I couldn't understand, why I never heard of it? Did it come and go in the movies? Great acting all around, with a lot of unknown actors. My favorite was the car mechanic living out in the desert played by Arthur Senzy, who I saw again in (I also rented) "A Few Good Men".Ted Danson, the Kid, and Eric Schweig were great as was Mary Steenburgen. Tales from the Crypt is no Sopranos, but in its day it was HBO's most popular original series. Based on the EC Horror comics of the 1940s and 1950s, these short shock-and-suspense stories with twist (and often twisted) endings weren't exclusively horror tales, but they consistently mined, in a comic sort of way, the dark side of human nature. The three episodes directed by series coproducer Robert Zemeckis are among the most memorable. In "All Through the Night," perhaps the single most famous story from the original comic book series, a psychotic killer dressed as Santa escapes Christmas Eve and terrorizes a middle-class home where murder has already made a holiday appearance: a homicidal wife plunges a fireplace poker into her husband's skull. (It was also adapted in the 1972 British anthology movie Tales from the Crypt). Kirk Douglas stars as a blood-and-thunder World War I general who discovers his son is a coward in the grim "Yellow," the most dramatically acute of the trio. Digital magic morphs Humphrey Bogart into "You, Murderer," a high-concept, rather gimmicky tale of murder, double crosses, and poetic justice as seen through a dead man's eyes. Lights! Camera! Hack-tion! Zemeckis Directs CRYPT!
Based on stories from the deliciously depraved E.C. horror comics (TALES FROM THE CRYPT, VAULT OF HORROR, HAUNT OF FEAR) of the 1950s, TALES FROM THE CRYPT was a TV horror anthology that, like most TV anthologies, had a lot of both hits and misses. Some of the stories really stank, but when a story was a hit, it was usually dead on (excuse the pun). This DVD represents three episodes that HBO execs apparently consider hits, probably because they were all directed by the renowned and Oscar-winning (1994's FORREST GUMP) Robert Zemeckis. And though CRYPT fans would like to see more episodes made available on DVD, the execs made pretty good selections with this lot.

The first story, "And All Through the House," is definitely the scariest of the three. It's about a disgruntled wife who murders her husband on Christmas Eve, only to have a madman dressed in Santa garb show up to deliver her just deserts. It is a particulary frightening morality play not only because it warns that "what goes around, comes around"; it also makes a multi-faceted statement about innocence and youth, as it is the murderous woman's little daughter who ultimately lets "Santa" into the house. Larry Drake delivers a delectably deranged performance as the insane Saint Nick. (This has proven to be one of the most enduring stories from the original E.C. Comics series, as it was also previously dramatized in 1972 as one portion of an excellent five-part British flick entitled TALES FROM THE CRYPT. In that version, Joan Collins--DYNASTY's Alexis Carrington Colby--played the part of the homicidal wife.)

In the second story, "Yellow," Kirk Douglas is a stone-hearted, by-the-book WWI General and, his son, Eric Douglas, is a craven Lieutenant under the General's command. Embarrassed by his "yellow" progeny, the General engages his son in an insidious course of action that will save the young man's reputation as well as allow the General himself to save face. Although the ending is easily predictable, the acting is top-notch and the depiction of WWI is fairly gruesome (for TV, anyway), and it all adds up to an engaging and suspenseful drama. This is definitely the strongest episode of the trio, though not as scary as the first.

The last of the three offerings, "You, Murderer," is also the weakest. It covers the last day in the life of a business exec who, altered via plastic surgery to hide from a dark past, is blackmailed and then offed by his cuckolding wife and her lover. Though the plot is a bit cliche and its ending predictable, the episode does, nonetheless, have a few interesting aspects: one, the story is told via flashbacks from the point of view of the already-dead exec; two, á la plastic surgery, the exec is the spitting image of Humphrey Bogart; and three, great performances are delivered by Isabella Rossellini (daughter of the real-life Bogart's CASABLANCA costar Ingrid Bergman) and character actor John Lithgow. The episode's biggest flaw is the special effects, which are primarily computerized insertions of Bogart film-clips á la FORREST GUMP. Unlike in GUMP, the effects come across as embarrasingly cheesy, and the manner in which they are utilized is very awkward to the flow of the narrative. Still, it's an entertaining entry for CRYPT, just one that is not up to par with the other two on this disc.

One minorly disappointing aspect to the DVD overall is the fact that there are no extras on the disc. Some HBO or syndication promotional spots or an interview with Zemeckis would've been nice, or maybe even a behind-the-scenes short featuring our gregarious host, The Crypt Keeper. Still, this DVD is well worth the expense, especially for fans of TALES FROM THE CRYPT or fans of the horror genre in general. At Amazon.com's asking price, the cost is less than $5 per episode, and that's cheaper than the cost-per-episode charged for many TV shows in either VHS or DVD format!

Yellow Shines, More Tales Please!
Of all the television series I want on DVD, Tales From The Crypt is it!

I hope this is just the first in a long running set for this series, but it doesn't look like it.

This DVD contains the three episodes done by Robert Zemeckis.

And All Through the House" (1989), remided me of the 'Tales From The Crypt - Have A Scary Little Christmas' CD I've had for quite a while. Basically the same backdrop of the story told on the CD is here, except for the 'Mother' killing her husband. Anyhow, that's how it starts, but what the poor mother does not know is that an escaped lunatic is on the prowl.

"Yellow" (1991), A dang good yarn if I do say so eh kiddies? Martin Sheen's excellent in this story of a san who cannot live up to his father's aspects of courageousness.

"You, Murderer" (1995), is really wierd. Stars Humphrey Bogart, Sherilyn Fenn, and some other famous personalities and basically the tale is in Bogart's voice. He is dead (murdered actually) but can still see what is happing around him, hear everything, and worse feel everything!

Pretty good set. Some great stars in these episodes and I really loved the episode 'Yellow'.

Hopefully more will be produced as I love the whole series.

Best Faerie Tale Theatre Ever!
I would have to agree with the previous review that this is the best episode of Faerie Tale Theatre. In adapting faerie tales for film or television, the biggest difficulty seems to be in capturing that sense of awe and wonder that the original stories invoke. Without picture illustrations and a child's imagination to fill in the blanks, the original stories often appear static and lifeless on the screen. At worst, the sublime becomes downright ridiculous. Faerie Tale Theatre is a great and entertaining show, but rarely has it captured that sense of magic. This episode is one time that is has, and the results are truly something to behold. Eric Idle is the only "name" here, but the rest of the cast is equally perfect in their roles. Nicholas Meyer creates an entire other world, utilizing medieval tones in setting and costumes, as well as an eerie score of pipes from composer James Horner. The effect is mesmerizing, and if the use of rhyme as dialogue takes some getting used to, it only adds to the haunting impact in the end. This episode may be too disturbing for the youngest children, but all lovers of faerie tales owe it to themselves to see this. It doesn't have the budget of big-screen fantasies, but I rank this right up there with the NeverEnding Story and the Dark Crystal. If you love those films, then you understand what I mean about the sublime.

Wonderful and surreal...as fairy tales should be.
In the early to mid eighties, Shelly Duvall produced a cable show for the then flagship HBO network called Faerie Tale Theatre. The intent was to bring classic childhood stories to an audience of young and old alike through big name stars, directors, and hip, irreverent writing. Without this series, there would not have been a "Princess Bride". Although many of these were excellent examples of the best television could offer, the finest hour (for me) was director Nicholas Meyer's interpretation of Robert Browning's "Pied Piper of Hamelin". Both faithful to the original poem and liberal in its creative embellishments, Meyer perfectly captured the eerieness of the story. The show starred Eric Idle and he makes a perfect Piper. Tall, pale, with piercing eyes and a hawklike nose, Idle looke every bit the character: part mystic, part mercenary. And his final march out of Hamelin with the children is truly the stuff of innocent nightmares. Without sentimentality, without any concession to cuteness, this episode proved that within all great children's stories lurked something magical and sinister...Just like adulthood. ... Read more

THE HOTTEST SUPERCOUPLE ON TELEVISION!!!!
Johnathan and Jennifer Hart were the quintessential super sexy couple of the late 70's and early 80's!!!! They rocked as the jet-setting, totally in love, detective duo!!! They had it all, wealth, glamour,passion, and no kids!!!
I just loved the way they stumbled on to those unexpected exciting adventures and murder mysteries. They made it look so easy!!! This show worked on so many levels, you had Jennifer who was sexy as hell, and you didn't hate her because she was so beautiful. She was just so lovable!!! Then there was Johnathan, handsome, but not beefcake, had a great sense of humor, and the guy was completely smitten with his adoring wife. Let's face it they had the ultimate fantasy dream marriage that only existed on prime-time television!!!
I hope we the fans of this dynamite show wont have to wait too much longer for the dvd release, and it would be nice to see a current interview with Robert Wagner & Stephanie Powers. God! I can't believe Robert Wagner turned 75 recently, he looks fantastic!!! Stephanie Powers is still pretty well preserved as well. I would also love to see a couple of her best mini-series come to dvd in America, Mistral's Daughter and Deceptions.

I've been waiting for this dvd release for years! Let's hope there will be lots of extras like outtakes and a Making of...
This is a series that was great from the start. The Pilot is classic and was never shown in Europe. Bring on the next seasons! You'll enjoy Hart to Hart, believe me!! Stefanie Powers, Robert Wagner and Lional Stander as Jennifer Hart, Jonathan Hart and Max....and when they met -- it was murder!

Why isnt it available??
Why have the studios not cottoned onto the fact that fan's of this excellent TV series is in large demand. I've been looking for the videos and all sorts, there just not available here in the UK. Bring it out on DVD on all regions so I can get a one for my so desperate mum!! It'll make her day to own just on not alone a whole series or even all the episodes!!. The studios could make alot of money from its fans, we all want to own it! All you have to do is produce it and tell all the fan clubs including the UK one that Gale Gwent runs.

Put Beauty and the Beast TV on DVDs!
This show was so unusual in that it inspired fans to help others for charity, read more literature, listen to classical music, and also brought out hidden talents, ie writing, drawing, creativity! This is a show that definitely needs to be released on DVDs. Fans have worn out their tapes watching them over and over. We need our show to be put out on DVD! Vincent and Catherine demand it.

Aw, come on!
The season's over, so I come onto this site expecting a DVD release date, yet there's nothing slated. What a jip! Ah, well. Summer re-runs and all that jazz. Life is good.

I haven't been this involved in a new television show since the Sopranos first premiered. And now that we have to wait until we all start collecting Social Security until season six finally arrives, I decided to find an alternative. I saw the promo for "House" and was interested. After the very first episode, I was hooked. OUTSTANDING show. Great writing, great ensemble.

Great main character.

Greg House is one of the most interesting characters to come along in a while. Sarcastic, mean-spirited, misanthropic, brutally honest and with a heart of gold. Truly worthy of the "complex" handle. And Hugh Laurie... wow. If this man doesn't recieve an Emmy or a Golden Globe (preferably both), it will only reaffirm my belief that the people in charge of running those awards things suck moose balls.

Not a single weak episode; this is one of those shows that progressively gets better and better until finally crashing into the legendary "cliffhanger" finale. Can't wait for season two!

World affairs can wait; this has to be released on DVD as soon as possible.

There's a scene where House is interviewing applicants to replace one of his underlings. A young kid walks in and basically attests that conformity is the enemy and how he admires Dr. House's attitude towards life. House fires back with a comment about conformity and an Asian tattoo the applicant has on his wrist. I mention this because it's the hardest I've laughed at a television show in years. One of many gold moments. Watch the re-runs. Support this show!

Best thing that's happened to TV in YEARS!
It's been so long since there's been anything on TV, anything at all, to sit up and watch on Tuesday nights.I can't wait to have this series on DVD!Hugh Laurie is brilliant, yeah, but we already knew that (grin).The ensemble cast is terrific (the best performances from Laurie wouldn't be as effective without the supporting players).The writing is solid, solid, solid, and -- wonder of wonders!there's character development and continuity!Ai yi yi!

Rather than start off on some of the wonderful things about House I'd better just shut up and say, Can't wait for the DVD . . .
