These indelible set-pieces make up one of the most endearing, and timeless, holiday classics ever broadcast on television. "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown", first telecast way back in 1966, will forever be a holiday favorite...whether it be on broadcast TV (remember the original TV commercials for Coca-Cola, McDonald's, and Dolly Madison Cakes?), VHS Video, or DVD. Now ... if only some kindly neighbor could just toss a Snicker's Bar (or maybe even a fresh Dolly Madison Cupcake) into Charlie Brown's bag, I think we'd all feel better. :-)
I am a huge fan of Peanuts. Every year, I look forward to the holiday specials on television. IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN is one of them. Yet, I must admit: much like A CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING and IT'S THE EASTER BEAGLE, CHARLIE BROWN, this show is kind of dated. I do still love it -- the characters and classic Peanuts gags we have all come to cherish. But truth be told, the animation in these earlier specials is sort of crude and the timing between a lot of the dialogue is very very very offbeat. So much so that it can actually get boring at times. Yet I still love them. There is just something about these shows that we can all relate to again and again. Yes, the later films, tv shows and specials are all better drawn, and the timing is right on the dot; and some have a much smoother feel. But these, I think, contain a certain nostalgic feeling. And that's why they are "classics."

Even to my jaded almost-30 eyes, "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" absolutely rocks. Peanuts TV specials lost a little charm when Vince Guaraldi passed on, but fortunately he scored this one. There's a Woodstock-themed song performed by Jack Sheldon -- not as good as his "Amendment Song" for "The Simpsons" (what is?), but it's hummable. All the great "Peanuts" moments are here: Lucy's one scene is a football gag; there's a lively remix of Guaraldi's "Linus and Lucy" during the popcorn-and-toast montage; Snoopy climbs out of a mailbox and gets assaulted by a wayard deck chair (it's so *true*!). Linus gives a great speech on the meaning of Chr -- I mean, Thanksgiving. The jive handshake Franklin slips Charlie Brown is adorable in a 1973 kind of way. My nephew was riveted to the screen for the Snoopy and Woodstock sequence, doubling over in laughter when the ping-pong table folded in half, taking Snoopy with it. These five minutes pleased him so much that I reran that portion of the tape two more times. He kept pointing to the screen and shouting "Doopy!" every fifteen seconds. Not the best "Peanuts" holiday -- "Christmas" and "Great Pumpkin" are desert-island material -- but if it serves to get my nephew into a lifetime of Charles M Schulz worship, I'll call it the most valuable video in my collection.
Charlie Brown, through no fault of his own, gets roped into preparing a Thanksgiving dinner for Peppermint Patty and all his friends. And this from a boy who can barely make cold cereal and toast. Snoopy and Woodstock lend a hand in the kitchen with predictably silly results. While it's not as iconic as some of the other Peanuts specials, it's a good story that really grasps the characters very well. This DVD also features "The Mayflower Voyages," one of several specials that cast the Peanuts characters as participants in American history. It's a good educational tool for the kids, mixing in some of the harsher facts of life at Plymouth Rock with the softer, happier mood of the Peanuts gang. Together, these two cartoons are well worth the DVD.
Instead of the earnest adult-like children, we get an attempt at early-70s hip wisecracking. Further severely dating the show to 1973 is the soundtrack, typified by the horrid jazzy blues vocal number "Little Birdy" and a fight snoopy has with an animated lawn chair (segment is total filler). The voiceovers are distracting too. Although, the actors who did the Christmas and Halloween specials were certainly well into adolescents by the time the Thanksgiving special was made, there was not even an attempt to retain any similarity when hiring the new actors (with the exception of Linus, who was voiced by the brother of the kid who did the Christmas and Halloween specials). They also sound a bit older and (perhaps as a result?)are much more wooden in their delivery. That being said, there aren't very many Thanksgiving specials out there and it does give a short history of the holiday. It will certainly give the kids something to watch for 25 minutes during halftime. But if you are expecting the sincerity and magic of the Christmas and Halloween specials, you will be disappointed.
I am a huge fan of Peanuts. Every year, I look forward to the holiday specials on television. A CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING is one of them. Yet, I must admit: much like IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN and IT'S THE EASTER BEAGLE, CHARLIE BROWN, this show is kind of dated. I do still love it -- the characters and classic Peanuts gags we have all come to cherish. Not to mention having a great storyline. But truth be told, the timing between most of the dialogue is very very very offbeat (example: towards the beginning, when Charlie Brown, Linus and Sally are conversing on the sidewalk, they sound like robots; and their timing is way off. During one instance, Linus stops talking, and there is a two or three second pause before Sally starts yelling. I mean, it's like, "Where did that come from?" LOL)). And Peppermint Patty's voice -- that's just annoying. Yet I still love them. There is just something about these shows that we can all relate to again and again. Yes, the later films, tv shows and specials are all better drawn, and the timing is a lot better; and some have a much smoother feel. But these, I think, contain a certain nostalgic feeling. And that's why they are "classics." I realize that some fans may be angry with this review; that I am somehow insulting Charles Schulz. But, you know what? I am sure even he would agree, if he saw the Thanksgiving show now, that, say, episodes from his mastefully done Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show or the NASA special is more smooth-flowing and the timing is better. Before you click "no" under this review, watch the Thanksgiving show again. You'll see what I mean by boring pauses in between much of the dialogue. I am not being mean here. I love Charles Schulz, and am just being perfectly honest about how I feel. And while A CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING is a true, honest-to-God classic, it is not one of the greatest holiday specials ever made. ... Read more

First of all, it's the only mainstream Christmas classic that actually DARES to bring the story of the birth of Jesus to front and center!! When Linus takes centerstage and quotes the bible for us, you can almost feel the air suck out of the room. It's a moment of simple drama that can really bring a tear to your eye. Linus, without saying a harsh word, essentially tells everyone to "shut up and remember the meaning of this holiday!" It's a beautiful moment. There's plenty of amusing stuff too. The pitiful tree...Snoopy's hijinks, etc. It's not laugh out loud funny, of course, but sweet and innocent. These are kids who live in a world without adults...and don't seem to need them either! It's always a nice 22 minute trip down memory lane. Every adult should own this...if only to take minute to journey back to childhood. And kids need to keep seeing this. I'm glad it has remained a classic. The animation is no great shakes, of course, but the style is executed marvelously. The voice acting, on the other hand, leaves nothing to be desired. The kids involved have done a terrific job. The music, ever present, is great, as we've come to expect from any Peanuts special. All in all, this is a MUST OWN DVD. (I do wish there were more extras available. Other than a 2nd Christmas special...it's okay, but no classic...there is nothing. Can't believe there isn't some little documentary or something out there.)
For almost forty years, watching "A Charlie Brown Christmas" has been an eagerly anticipated event for millions of households. I recall watching it as far back as twenty-two years ago, and have watched it every Christmas since. "A Charlie Brown Christmas" was made in a time when commercialism was running rampant all over the country. Stores advertising to shoppers what they ought to buy, long before Thanksgiving had come and gone. Unfortunately, we still see this blatant commercialism today, which makes this short film so very poignant and all the more special. Charlie Brown is assigned to direct the school Christmas pageant, much to his glee; for he feels accepted and worthy. When Lucy tells him to go out and get an alumminum tree, he takes Linus along with him. What Charlie Brown ultimately gets is a small, sickly looking tree, which is rapidly loosing its needles. But, Charlie can see how much the tree "needs him", somebody; something which he can identity with. When he returns, he finds the gang dancing to un-Christmas like music, instead of rehearsing their lines. They stop to take a look at the tree he brought, immediately burtsing out in mocking laughter. Apparently Charlie Brown has failed again. In disgust and humiliation he flees, taking the tree with him. And when he comes upon Snoopy's dog house, all decked out in Christmas lights, not to celebrate the joyous holiday, but to win money in a contest, Charlie Brown has had enough, and almost loses all faith in Christmas. Linus saves the day, somehow able to bring the tree back to life, and make it look much healthier and stronger. But it is when he explains the meaning of Christmas that the "gang" gets the point of Christmas, and what Charlie Brown was trying to do. "A Charlie Brown Christmas" ends with newfound meaning for Christmas, hopefully not soon forgotten by either the Peanuts Gang, or, more importantly ... us.
Charlie Brown is depressed. He can't seem to get himself into the Christmas spirit. He doesn't like the commercialism of Christmas and scarcely knows the true meaning of Christmas. Lucy selects Charlie Brown to be the director of their Christmas play and he decides to get a Christmas tree for the production. The other kids tell him to get a "nice shiny aluminum tree, maybe a pink one", but Charlie Brown and Linus bring back a sad looking real tree. Charlie Brown is almost laughed out of the auditorium, but when he asks if anyone knows what Christmas is all about, Linus has the answer. Linus recites a passage from the Bible telling of the birth of Jesus. Charlie Brown is cheered and leaves with the tree. He tries to decorate the little tree, but even that is ruined. Linus and the gang follow behind, fix up the tree, and at the end, they show the true spirit of Christmas. It is a sweet little Christmas special, filled with memorable moments that will always make me smile. The one thing that amazes me is that Charles Schulz was able to include Linus's speech near the end about the birth of Jesus. I don't imagine that would have been able to be included today, but I think the special is all the stronger for it. I have a hard time imagining that any new Christmas show will ever hold as special a place in my heart as "A Charlie Brown Christmas". This DVD also includes "It's Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown" (1992). This Christmas feature is lacking the overall charm and emotion of the older special, but it has a lot more humor. It is also different from the first Christmas special in that this one is more a series of vignettes (perhaps based on Schulz's comic strips) than a complete story. There are sequences with Charlie Brown trying to sell Christmas wreaths before Thanksgiving, and of Sally rehearsing for a Christmas play. Sally's sole line is "Hark!", though I think she missed the rest of her lines where the herald angels sing. It is a cute cartoon, but ultimately it does not quite live up to "A Charlie Brown Christmas", but it my mind, nothing can live up to that one. ... Read more

"There's no time for love, Charlie Brown" features original Guaraldi music and many brief sketches that make me laugh. I enjoy the grocery store version of "Joe Cool" and the silliness of the fact that the kids are in the supermarket but think it's an art museum. But the opening title sure is retro! "Someday you'll find her, Charlie Brown" is terrible! I don't think it's even written by Schulz, the music is bad because it isn't by Benoit or Guaraldi, and they show adults! In it Linus meets the girl of Charlie Brown's dreams: compare it to "Happy New Year, Charlie Brown." Linus is a girlthief! But "A Charlie Brown Valentine" is good. ... Read more

But that's not the worst of it- some time ago I let a close friend in on my softer side surfacing whenever this harrowing tale comes on the tube. This ended up being one of the biggest mistakes I've ever made. Not one to keep the knowledge of a fellow man's secret shame to himself, he made sure my little quirk became well-known among our other less-than-sympathetic hang-out buds. Now I can't even host an old-school Star Trek eppie marathon party without some wiseguy slipping a "Snoopy Come Home" video in between the second season finale & the third-season premiere. With friends like these, who needs grief counselors? My word of advice to you: if watching "Snoopy Comes Home" (or any other movie for that matter) leaves you feeling a little misty- and no one else knows about it- do yourself a favor and keep it to yourself. You'll be spared quite a bit of pain & anguish if ya do, believe you me! `Late ... Read more

I am grateful for Charles Schulz! And Charlie Brown is no stranger to me. I know Charlie Brown! I AM CHARLIE BROWN! Yes, if you ever know someone who can never fly a kite, can never kick a football, can never find love, can never succeed in anything, that is Charlie Brown; THAT IS I! The only thing that makes Charlie Brown "the Charlie Brownest" is that he never stops trying. He is a real warrior. In this movie he again is trying to be a leader of his gangs in a camping contest. Going from point A to point B, in the wilderness of raging rivers and thundering waterfalls, Charlie Brown is the only leader one can ask for, since he never fears failures! Need I say more, I had to buy a copy for myself!
Lucy: What kind of a place is this to be stuck in? We can't even plug our irons in! Speaker: Campers will be up at o 500. Speaker: Race will start at 1800. Marice(in a sack race): Sir, I don't think I was meant to be a potato. Snoopy is funny especially on the motorcycle, carrying Charlie Brown and him saying the classic line"Why can't I have a normal dog like everyone else?". Though the girls steal the funny lines. The whole gang takes place here in this likeable Peanuts adventure. ... Read more
