The recipe for Blade is quite simple; you take one part Batman, one part horror flick, and two parts kung fu and frost it all over with some truly campy acting. What do you get? An action flick that will reaffirm your belief that the superhero action genre did not die in the fluorescent hands of Joel Schumacher. Blade is the story of a ruthless and supreme vampire slayer (Wesley Snipes) who makes other contemporary slayers (Buffy etal.) look like amateurs. Armed with a samurai sword made of silver and guns that shoot silver bullets, he lives to hunt and kill "Sucker Heads." Pitted against our hero is a cast of villains led by Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff), a crafty and charismatic vampire who believes that his people should be ruling the world, and that the human race is merely the food source they prey on. Born half-human and half-vampire after his mother had been attacked by a blood-sucker, Blade is brought to life by a very buff-looking Snipes in his best action performance to date. Apparent throughout the film is the fluid grace and admirable skill that Snipes brings to the many breathtaking action sequences that lift this movie into a league of its own. The influence of Hong Kong action cinema is clear, and you may even notice vague impressions of Japanese anime sprinkled innovatively throughout. Dorff holds his own against Snipes as the menacing nemesis Frost, and the grizzly Kris Kristofferson brings a tough, cynical edge to his role as Whistler, Blade's mentor and friend. Ample credit should also go to director Stephen Norrington and screenwriter David S. Goyer, who prove it is possible to adapt comic book characters to the big screen without making them look absurd. Indeed, quite the reverse happens here: Blade comes vividly to life from the moment you first see him, in an outstanding opening sequence that sets the tone for the action-packed film that follows. From that moment onward you are pulled into the world of Blade and his perpetual battle against the vampire race. --Jeremy Storey ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Move over Buffy
Wesley Snipes is every vampire's worst nightmare in the fantastic comic book actioner "Blade". Legendary "Day-Walker" Blade (Wesley Snipes) uses his lethal skills in his quest to exterminate the vampire underworld from the face of the earth. When the rogue vampire Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff) plots a vampire uprising against all humans, humanity's only hope for survival lies in the tortured vampire hunter Blade. Based on the Marvel Comics hero, "Blade" is an exciting, action-packed comic book film that contains extreme action and rich characters. The storyline moves quite fast and the action sequences are fierce and quite dazzling. Wesley Snipes and Stephen Dorff deliver some wildly effective performances. The cast also includes N'Bushe Wright, Donal Logue, Udo Keir, Traci Lords and Kris Kristofferson.

New Line gives "Blade" an outstanding "Platinum Edition" presentation. The film is presented in its original 2.35:1 widescreen format. The DVD has a fine video transfer with rich colors and excellent sharpness. The 5.1 Dolby Digital sound is truly clear with amazing surround effects. Its supplemental features include a detailed audio commentary by cast and crew, deleted scenes, behind-the-scene featurettes, production designs and DVD-ROM extras. With such winning presentation and great supplements, "Blade" earns a solid "B+".

5-0 out of 5 stars Blade kicks butt
Finally a mainstream vampire flick that is cool and delivers the action. Right away it is established that this is going to be different from every other vamp. movie you've seen before. I don't mind big budget Hollywood productions as long as they are somewhat creative with the storyline, don't bore me with endless dialog/build up and provide lots of action and fun. Blade was a real surprise, as I wasn't expecting much but it really blew me away with spectacular visuals, chase scenes that get your heart racing, a badass hero (Snipes' character Blade), stunning action and an overall ultra sleek feel with tight pacing and a real lack of dullness (how refreshing). The gory death scenes are a nice treat as well, this is the advantage with cg effects: you can do pretty much anything if you can imagine it. Villains are sliced to pieces and spray geysers of blood similar to Shogun Assassin (another cool movie people should check out).

Wesley Snipes is not one of my favorite actors but he did a great job playing the role of a dark and mysterious warrior, he is almost bounty hunter like. Blade is a major vampire hunter, and has a really deadly arsenal of weapons, mainly consisting of a big sword that he uses to slash vamps. Blade prowls the city streets and underworld at night seeking the growing number of vampires that are planning to rule the earth. His strength and skills are heightened because of his genetics- he is part vampire. This idea works well for me, you have to be able to explain how he is able to be so successful as a hunter, how he can identify the vamps and over power them.
Blade's strength is also his weakness though, he must take a syrum that controls his thirst for blood. This is gonna tie into the story for a nice little twist toward the end. Anyone who liked Interview With the Vampire will enjoy it.

Along with a new found female companion, Blade is lured into the final confrontation that will determine the fate of the world. Nothing new here, but the big showdown is well done and holds your attention till' the cliffhanger climax. When these vampires die they puff up and explode,
spraying blood and guts into the air. This alone is worth seeing the film.

I've seen a few vampire movies, and I would have to say that Blade easily beats "John Carpenter's Vampires" and "Fright Night" which are two of the most popular ones, but it's not a fair fight since Blade is more action than horror.

Blade is a movie that oozes coolness, I would describe it as a mix of the Batman films, The Matrix, Highlander, Fist of the North Star, and From Dusk Till Dawn. I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Marvel was still in bankruptcy proceedings..
In 1998, when Amen Ra (Wesley's production company) and New Line agreed to do this first Marvel Movie, they had limited budget, resources, and time to do it. So the whole thing was shot in Europe and from start to finish, it'a a very cheap looking movie. Lots of fake CGi effects, guns going off everywhere, and somewhere there is supposed to be a plot here (but there isn't). I don't think it even had a script. They only made two sequals to this movie because each film cost only $1.98 to produce. Marvel and New Line do not mix.

4-0 out of 5 stars From The Comics to The Screen -- Vampires Beware!
This is a pretty good film but is not as good as the Buffy television series.

The world is secretly under the control of vampires (much like in the Vampirella stories). Blade was born of a woman who was dying from vampire bite. Thus he has many of the vampire advantages without the limitations. He has teamed up with Kris Kristofferson who was also a vampire hunter and has weapon making skills. Together they are waging a war against the vampires.

The vampires are led by a council of vampire family heads. There are two types of vampires: those born as vampires and those turned from humans by a bite. The leader of the made vampires is tired of ruling from behind the scenes and is pushing for vampires to take overt control. The ancient leaders are very wary of such actions. But the made vampire has a plan for vampiric triumph.

Some ancient vampire texts hold amazing secrets but the secret of translation has been lost long ago. Computers have made it possible to learn these secrets a la Jennie Calendar. The text reveals the existence of an ancient vampire device that can bring about the Blood God. It is to this end that the head of the made vampires is striving. With the sacrifice of the heads of the ancient vampire houses, he can become indestructible. His plans are carried out and Blade must find a way to defeat him.

While this movie has the trappings of vampires and vampire slayers, it is really an action flick with the emphasis on Blade's fighting style. There really are some very good moves here. The rest of the film is pretty good but not excellent.

I am usually pretty indifferent to most of Snipe's movies but he seems to be well-cast in this role. There are many good reasons to see this film but it is on the violent and gory side so be warned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice!

2-0 out of 5 stars The League of Extrodinary Gentlemen
A horribly burned madman, known as the Phantom/Fantom, is making very powerful weapons, is creating a world war and worst of all, it's not even the 20th Century yet! To combat this Phantom of the Opera wacko, "M"(Richard Roxburgh) has recruited 7 literary characters, each with their own special abilities and talents, to stop this madman. This team, which includes the Hunter Allan Quartermain(Sean Connery), the Rouge Rodney Skinner aka Invisible Man(Tony Curran), the Scientist Captain Nemo(Naseeruddin Shah), the Vampire Mina Harker(Peta Wilson), the Immortal Dorian Gray(Stuart Townsend), the Spy Tom Sawyer(Shane West), and the Beast Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde(Jason Flemyng and ugly CGI). Together, they form the League of Extrodinary Gentlemen.

This looked like a really fun movie. But in the end, it could of been done better. Now, I'm not very familiar with the comic book so I don't know how true this is to the material, but this film's weakest points are the script, which is terribly silly and pointless, and the horrible special effects. The action scenes were clumsy and you don't find any big suprises out of this film.

The actors range from good to bad. Sean Connery's a great actor, but he's just not believable as Quartermain because of his age. He seems too old to be able to do the physical things he can. Tony Curran is never given a chance to make us like his character. Skinner's a jerk most of the time and going back and forth between an actor in makeup and CGI effects is tedious. Naseeruddin Shah, as Captain Nemo, is fun to watch, but his fighting abilities seem a little hard to swallow. He's one of the better characters in the film. Peta Wilson does a fine job as Mina Harker. Her character is one you're really able to like. Stuart Townsend is great as Dorian Gray. He pulls the role off very well and has some pretty good lines. Shane West is good enough to make us like Tom Sawyer. He's got some really cool moments. Jason Flemyng is perfect as Dr.Jekyll, though the Hyde character looks really stupid(Facial expressions and deformations all over him.)

Overall, I'd say see it at least once. You might like it, you might hate it. Decide for yourself.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK for hard core Connery Fans only!
No matter how many average, weird, or downright awful movies Sean Connery makes, he'll always command an audience. In this film, Connery plays a retired British explorer roped into preventing WW I by leading a team of misfits in a vaguely Bondian adventurer. As a nice twist, most of the misfits consist of 19th Century British villains such as Mr. Hyde, the Invisible Man, and Captain Nemo. Of course, no one bothers to explain why such villains would agree to unite for any cause other than, well, villainy. The film is comic book-y in a bad way, with ridiculous dialogue and a poor sense of continuity, and the effects are frequently unintentionally funny, especially Mr. Hyde's appearance. Connery makes the film work as a throwaway action film, but it's clear from the extras that the cast and some of the crew were deluded into thinking this was something more. Not surprisingly, this movie plays much better on DVD than it did in the theaters. If you're a die-hard Connery fan, you'll like this one. If not, and you want to see Connery at his best, you'd be better off with Goldfinger.

4-0 out of 5 stars not terrible - it's fun
You probably know that LXG has the Invisible Man, Alan Quatermain, Captain Nemo and company in it. You can read the good and bad reviews. I haven't anything to report other than that I enjoyed it and LXG doesn't deserve it's bad rep.

5-0 out of 5 stars LXG is GREAT!
I love LXG! It's cartoony and action packed and has so many of my favorite fictional characters in it. Most importantly it's got Peta Wilson in a perfect role for her. Ultra-sexy Peta is one hot vampire chick! The reviewer who said she didn't do any vampire stuff must not have really seen the flick. She drinks human blood! What more do you want dude? She flies and turns into bats too! That's not vampire stuff? Stop smokin' and WATCH THE MOVIE!
Don't let bad reviews written by people who didn't see LXG turn you away. It may not be your thing or it might be. I had a ball watching LXG. Give it a go, have some fun with it, enjoy the characters, watch Peta do vampire stuff,.. and hell just watch Peta! She's HOT!

1-0 out of 5 stars One very poorly polished turd...
Everyone I know who's seen this film, myself included, hated it!! It's an interesting concept, but none of the actors really shine here and the look of certain things, such as the ship, are totally overdone and stupid looking. You'd think a movie with a vampire chick in it would be good, but she doesn't do any vampire-like things. I appoligize if anyone "doesn't find this review helpful," but seriously, I TRIED trading this DVD in to a local DVD store and they turned me away. This is no lie, they had 17 used and unsold copies already. Please don't waste your time on this flick. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Over the top
When you see a film with the title "Death Machine," you probably won't expect to see cinema at its finest. This movie is one of those low budget schlockers you catch on the Sci-Fi Channel from time to time, sandwiched between low-grade clunkers like "Convict 762" and "Fortress 2: Re-entry." Why does it seem that bad science fiction films are worse than bad films in other genres? Don't get me wrong; I am not saying "Death Machine" is a total loss. I'm not saying it is great, either, but that's beside the point. What I am saying is that over the past year or so, a majority of the bad films I have seen are science fiction films. It isn't a recent phenomenon, either. I considered blaming the arrival of the Sci-Fi Channel--and its voracious appetite for programming--as a primary cause in the increase of bad films, but that isn't exactly the case. Several of these films were not made in the last year or two but in the early 1980s and 1990s. Obviously, atrocious films in this genre stretch back well into the 1950s, at least, so blaming a new cable network for the plethora of technology themed turkeys traipsing across my screen is unfair. Perhaps the reason has something to do with higher audience expectations and the absolute need for special effects. If the effects reek, so go the expectations of the film.

O.K., there's this big, bad corporation in the near future, see, and the jerks who run the place make lots of money developing big and better killing hardware for the military along with anyone else with enough money to deal. The latest project involves suiting up some poor dupe in a huge suit of body armor, wiping his memory and personality with a computer program download into the old noggin, and setting him loose to blow up the baddies. Sure, messing around with some guy's head probably violates a few archaic sensibilities--the Constitution comes to mind--but hey, a buck is a buck. Besides, the near future is an incredibly violent world where anything goes. Why not come up with a pseudo-Terminator like weapon to take out the trash? A few people in the country still seem to care about such prissy ideas as human dignity and rights, so the company brings in a female executive to investigate reports that the company is shamelessly using people as guinea pigs. Also, lest you think the managers are completely altruistic, higher ups at the corporation are also concerned about getting bad press over a few leaks to the media. So this gal roars into a board meeting full of vim and vigor, clad in tight clothing, and prepares to white tornado the whole stinking company. There's just one small problem with her crusade: no one wants her there, and certain troublemakers have a nasty habit of waking up in pieces or with their throats cut.

Almost immediately, our gal runs into trouble in the shape of project designer and resident psycho Jack Dante (Brad Dourif). Yeah, Dante is a little weird about his work, a little touchy when it comes to criticism or demands for access to his workshop, but aren't we all? His biggest, bestest invention is some sort of super fast robot, a heap of razor sharp metals, whirling teeth, and other assorted killing things held together with a bunch of electrical cords called a Warbeast. When this thing goes for a spin through the building after our heroine cuts off Dante's funding, no one is safe. Bodies fall like freshly mown grass under the unrelenting assault of Jack's super weapon. All of these hijinks just happen to coincide with the arrival of a trio of tattooed, punked out eco-warriors set to destroy the corporation's banks of supercomputers contained in a reinforced bunker in the basement of the high-rise. You can guess what happens next: our fearless heroine teams up with the eco-punks to survive the onslaught of Dante's death machine. The trick is to get out of the building in one piece, not an easy task when you have an automated can opener chasing you all over the place.

Fortunately, "Death Machine" manages to entertain largely due to the Warbeast and the warped antics of Brad Dourif as Jack Dante. Dourif assumes a persona so over the top that it defies normal description. Imagine if comedian Jim Carrey took the brown blotter at Woodstock and grew up to become Charles Manson, and you have some idea of what Dourif's character looks and acts like in this movie. His character is so much fun that I must give "Death Machine" four stars based on him alone. As for the look and attitude of the film, well, it is just as weird as Dante. Shrill blasts of techno/thrash music reverberate throughout the proceedings, set against a backdrop of technologically savvy set pieces lit up with lighting that is positively garish. Bloodshed abounds as well, with hardly a scene passing by without someone keeling over in a heap of busted bones and pulped flesh.

"Death Machine" has plenty of flaws--including an uneven script, some uninteresting characters, and a general sense of the ridiculous running through the whole thing--but it is still an intriguing enough movie worth spending some time on. It's certainly a memorable movie, if nothing else. The DVD edition sadly offers "Death Machine" in a badly cropped fullscreen transfer with little else. Would I like to see a disc loaded with plenty of extras and commentaries? Not really. This movie is a throw away film best watched and remembered at face value. Remember, there is plenty more bad sci-fi than good sci-fi, but "Death Machine" manages to stake out a sort of middle ground. I would definitely watch it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is a psycho death bot on the loose!
Wow... This movie was amoung the worst movies I've seen in a very very good way. I agree, the death machine alone makes it worth the rental. There are two characters I have seen before in any movie all together and the rest of the cast I have not. Makes for a good movie in my book. The acting was actually not that bad but the plot was laughable in a very good way. Aside from all of that, my favorite part was the terminology and the quotes that they used. Any movie that can actually get away with say "a quad-matrix googaplactic of memory coprocessors" deserves some special recognition in my book. This movie is amazing. There is no way around it.

5-0 out of 5 stars HOLY DONUTS!!!
The sheer badness of Death Machine alone makes it worth purchasing and viewing multiple times... the aforementioned quote being one of the biggest reasons. It's like watching Plan 9 from Outer Space, except it spawns more inside jokes and is significantly more entertaining.

A horrible movie... absolutely horrible, in a spectacularly hilarious sort of way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is this some kind of joke?
Don't get me wrong: This movie is fantastic!
Great script - wonderful acting (especially by Brad Dourif), awesome action, but 99 mins?
What happenend to the other 12 mins? I have seen the short version - some important key scenes are missing in it.
So when do they bring out the movie on DVD in the complete version? I hope soon - because my tape is nearly worn out ....

3-0 out of 5 stars Terminator like film
B-category Terminator like film. All activity goes inside one building. Strong film, worth its price.
minus * because of Dolby Prologic, minus second * because of non-superior suspense. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars wow, this movie is by the director of blade!
wait a minute, thats not a credential. blade was nothing special in my opinion, but it wasn't especially terrible like the last minute. the back cover of the dvd compares itself to trainspotting, a clockwork orange, and fight club, among others. it claims to be more of everything from those movies, like a crazy, wonderful hybrid of a movie that is supposed to be an unforgettable experience. of course it is not, that is why i gave it 1 star. even with no hype based on other movies, this one still sucks. i'd like to compare it to a body consisting of skin and muscle. the muscle represents all the silly flashy stuff put into the movie to cover up something nonexistant: a plot, a character that you know something about and/or care about(the figurative skeleton, which must be in place for the muscles to work). i hope that analogy works well enough. so, the movie has a fair amount of imagery that is supposed to be wierd like a underground london party with a medical fetish theme, or the crazy old man that rules the underground with an army of knife-wielding outlaw children. these supposedly interesting scenes and characters seem too one-dimensional because there is no real story, just these chaotic cut scenes and "cutting-edge" electronic soundtrack i don't really care for. one of the other reviewers mentioned many hidden special features that explian the movie better and kind of gave you the whole picture. i don't agree. the special features were simply the cast and crew speculating about what you the viewer doesn't know either. you never get to hear from the writer/director, so i guess that is why you never find anything out. i must include the bright spots of this dvd, and there are three. 1. one character is known as a crooner, even though he dosen't look like it. he does a killer performance of "i've got you under my skin" while prancing around the afforementioned fetish party. 2. the one bright spot on the soundtrack is a good one from aphex twin, which plays during the closing scene. 3. one of the more unusual special features is the inclusion of some music videos that have nothing to do with the movie. the third video is el-p's "deep space 9mm". this is one of the coolest videos ever by one of the most original rappers ever. please enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have you ever seen trainspotting?
I remember watching this movie in the living room and after it was over my dad said," your really scraping the bottom of the barrel". Oh, but he wouldn't understand. This movie was unique in all it's aspect and I loved it. You have scenes were you go into this club where people are doing kinky doctor operations and then you have a guy in a stylish black suite dancing and singing to Frank Sinatra. Who could not love that!! I guess you have to have a slightly different tilt on the world to respect this movie. If you liked this, I recommend Trainspotting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Looks great, boasts of originality but does have its flaws.
The Last Minute looks simply fantastic and the editing is outstanding. If you liked the look of Blade (Stephen Norrington) then you will love this underground film but it is marred by some alternative-indie movie formulas that we have seen a million times before.

The film is mostly played out like an acid trip and is definitely a powerful vehicle for our lead actor - Max Beesley. The music is techno orientated for the most part and it certainly will appeal to new generation director movie fans. The film is part fantasy driven with lots of surrealism and bizarre elements. The premise is a simple one. A young man finds his mystery artwork hyped up to be the next big thing but eventually it all falls apart for him and he ends up homeless and on the needle. The film is fast and furious as our anti-hero parties down in London, meets a cut-throat talent agent, drug dealers, S&M discos and a yearning to explain the world to everybody now that he is such a great thing. In a split second it all falls down for him and he finds himself in gutter covered in puke, without any money and in need of a place to live. He ends up stealing, living in the underground with a group of renegade London kids under the control of a Fagan type character like out of Oliver Twist. It looks really great. Sadly as soon as he goes on the needle we start to hit Trainspotting territory and this is where the film fails. For all its originality it is a shame that the filmmakers had to delve into that formulaic, guy hooked on scag, needs to break out from his crap world and get a life, sort of deal. It would have been much better if it just stuck with the failed artist trying to break out of his current depression.

Again I can not understate how great this film looks and it does have Lynch appeal but sadly it is not the cult offering that it purported to be in the beginning. A great slice of indie film making but Trainspotting and Requiem for a Dream do it much better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Best Way To Waste Two Hours Of Your Life!!!
First of all, yes this movie was very vanguard, indie, and British. The first 30 minutes had tricked me into thinking that maybe I had stumbled onto a new cult film that I could introduce my friends to so we could lament about how [bad] major studio films are. Over the next 30 minutes you're just waiting on the point in which everything changes for the main character, once it does you anticipate that the last hour of this film is going to drive home excitement and deliver some answers to the mounting questions in your head. This film is loose and vague about details that MOST
serious movie fans want explanations and closure about either NEAR or BEFORE the film ends.... This movie did NEITHER!! What was the relationship between the leader of the thieves gang and the dealer/talent broker? What did the main character do for a living exactly? Why did the main character STAY with the girl for two years just for them to separate in 15 seconds time with no residual feelings between the two? Not even a hug or goodbye!! I felt suckered into watching this movie by a brilliant trailer and marketing campaign and extremely pissed when it ended.
I got NO closure, NOTHING was resolved with the main character. He got [cheated] and got NO revenge!! He left without the girl!!! He got [cheated] for short money at the end on top of it all!! This was perhaps the WORST end to a movie with such a promising beginning. Equally frustrating is that there was NO SUBTITLES!!! You will miss subtle nuances and important intelligible dialouge that would perhaps give SOME insight into what was going on...Or probably just frustrate you further. In closing, I would plead with anyone would loves movies with a PLOT, BEGINNING, MIDDLE, CONFLICT, & CONCLUSION coupled with CLOSURE and overall SATISFACTION after viewing rather than MOUNTING FRUSTRATION and ANGER, then PLEASE, AVOID THIS FILM AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing film....great DVD...buy it!
This DVD is unlike any I have ever seen before. It's more like a video game than a regular DVD. I used to play with the Residents CD Rom's and Gingerbread Men, if you remember those, and there was some cool little access point to new worlds, hidden amongst the pages. This is the TLM dvd.
The film itself is interesting and action packed, as well as funny, in a dark comedic way. It's very british and has a vibe like Trainspotting(rmemember the toilet scene). Some of the accents are hard to follow, but I liked that because it was very english.
There is one scene which made me freak, where they have medical fetishism going on in some trendy London club. I won't be going there myself, but was intrigued enough to dig deep into the DVD to see what the hell that was all about....there are answers to loads of questions hidden in the DVd itself.
I'm not a technical expert when it comes to movie making but this looks like a big budget film to me, although Palm normally does indie stuff, so go figure.
Also the music was great. It was techno / electronic and I don;t know all the artists but it has Leftfield, AMon Tobin and Aphex Twin for sure.
Anyway, if ou love edgy movies and video games you might like this. ...
