Whether it's a snowy nude sprint down Main Street, the mysterious appearance of a long-lost relative, or the improbable death of yet another of Maggie's boyfriends, life's never dull in the remote hamlet of Cicely, Alaska. Colorful characters and quirky plots propelled Northern Exposure into the hearts of millions of viewers, earning the CBS "dramedy" series seven Emmy awards between its 1990 debut and its demise six seasons later.

In season 1, we meet Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow), an urban New York yuppie who consents to four years of rural servitude after Alaska pays his medical-school tuition. Joel's fish-out-of-water adventures drive the show, but it's the quirky ensemble of characters--Chris, the DJ/philosopher (John Corbett), Holling, the bartender (John Cullum), Maurice, the town patriarch (Barry Corbin), Ed, the filmmaker (Darren E. Burrows), and Maggie, the bush pilot (Janine Turner), among others–-that keeps the series consistently entertaining. The town develops its own offbeat personality as well, a Mayberry-meets-Twin-Peaksblend of Native mysticism, Aurora Borealis-induced dreams, unlikely tales of long-lost family members, and rumors of a Bigfoot-like creature known simply as "Adam."

Northern Exposure provides a utopian escape--a place where life is interesting but never dangerous, everyone's insightful, the mystical becomes real, and nobody's burdened with a mundane 9-to-6 desk job. Cicely is a delightful place to visit, even if it's only for an hour at a time.

A mid-season replacement, season 1 consists of just eight episodes on two DVDs. Each episode includes 5-10 minutes of outtakes and deleted scenes. --Shane Burnett ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yay! Finally!
With the glut of completely forgettable TV shows and movies flooding onto DVD, it's nice to see a series of great quality, superior writing, memorable characters, and consistent imagination make it finally to DVD! "Northern Exposure" is a true classic! It'll be great to have it available legally in Region 1 NTSC (there have been bootleg Region 2 PAL versions floating around for a couple years already on eBay, but with extremely poor sound/video synchronization).
The first season only has 8 episodes (since it premiered during the summer of 1990. It might have been better to combine the 1st season with the 7 episodes of season 2 (which ran in April/May 1991, for a 15 episode set, but comprehending the mind of marketing 'geniuses' is bound to lead nowehere.) The first 'regular' seasons with 22-24 episodes only began in September 1991.
Let's hope this release signals that after season 1, the next 5 seasons will also soon see the light of day.

Some of the extras promised for this release:

Deleted Scenes
Video Documentary Footage
Mock Movie Footage
"Unexposed" Footage

(and special limited edition "Parka" packaging!)

1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the Beef?
Norther Exposure is probably one of the best cast, best written, & best Location-scouted TV shows ever aired. My wife & I eagerly awaited for the show's arrival to DVD. When we purchased the show--for an outrageous $50.00--we were shocked at what we received. Yes, the innovative packaging was fun, but it hid the fact that there was nothing inside. As others have noted, the price is horrible when you realize that there were on 8 episodes! What makes it worse is that there is absolutely no information included. No booklet with stills from the show, no list of episodes, nothing at all. On top of that, they do not even give you multiple discs, they give you cheezy 2 sided discs with 2 shows on each side. What were they thinking? Others have noted that seasons 1 & 2 should have been combined. I agree. If you are a fan of the show & want the episodes from season 2, you'll get reamed gain... there are only 7 episodes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great TV you can't find these days.
I am giving this DVD 5 stars because that's what the show is worth. You can't find TV like this now days and perhaps never will again. I have watched late night re-runs and fell in love years ago. I cannot wait to revisit Sicily Alaska again.
The 1st season is only 8 episodes so yeah it is a little short. I can guarantee it will only leave you wanting more though. Because the show is so amazing I am not to concerned about price. I am crossing all fingers and toes that they will release the rest of the seasons on DVD or I will be forced to buy the A&E VHS copies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Northern Exposure--The ultimate TV show!
I remember watching the TV show when it was in it's 2nd or 3rd season and I became completely hooked on it. I'm very glad I got this DVD that contains the entire 1st season of shows and the extra goodies that come with it. I can hardly wait for the 2nd season to be released on DVD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Close, but not enough.
This was great. My friends were able to see how the story all started and I got to see it all over again. But only 8 episodes, I would agree with other reviewers, they should have gave the first two seasons. Definitely better than a lot of other TV to DVD issues out there right now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mystery and Suspense Without Sherlock Holmes
One of the finest suspense movies that I have seen in long time. Avery has had the unfortunate luck to have his sister kidnapped and ransomed for $2,000,000. Unfortunately, neither he nor his father have that kind of money. So he and his friends kidnap retired mob boss Charlie Bartolucci (expertly played by Christopher Walken) so that he can use his contacts to find the girl and pay the ransom. Shocked, angered, and ultimately amused by his novice captors, Bartolucci agrees to help with Avery's sister. While doing so, one of his contacts lets him know that the kidnapping had help from an inside party. Slyly playing the friends against each other with this information, the tension slowly continues to boil until the movie's explosive climax. With an underrated but excellent supporting cast (including Jay Mohr, Sean Patrick Flanery, and Denis Leary), this movie keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time because you're never sure who to trust. Perhaps the most brilliant aspect of Josh McKinney's script is the unending depth of the characters. Denis Leary's role is a perfect example: as Bartolucci's lieutenaant he posesses an expected viciousness and sarcasm. However, he allows a good soul to shine through at odd moments: like when he shows up to question a friend of the boys and instead protects her from the forced advances of her stepfather. Filled with tension that is only heightened by the film's biting humor and its complex characters, this is a great flick to watch with a bunch of friends so you can all guess whodunnit and be shocked by the ending.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Funny and Dark
"Suicide Kings" is a very good movie with a great ensemble cast. Different viewers will chose their particular favorites, but if you are an admirer of Christopher Walken you have all the reason you need to see this film. Denis Leary is the second best aspect of this film, and that is largely due to his smaller, but critical role. His defensive riffs on justifying his $1500.00 Stingray boots that others acknowledge as, "fish-boots", is quality stand up material.

Four prep-school, rich kid, lifelong friends, and a fifth that they mislead as only friends can do, decide they need to kidnap Christopher Walken for his diplomatic skills. His character is a modern version of Don Corleone so a decision to detain him against his will is poor judgment at best and lethal at worst. When Walken contacts his attorney to unravel this mess his first comments include, "don't send your kids to boarding school". The unwitting friend Ira, as played by Johnny Galecki is a riot as he frets over his parents newly finished floors and marked liquor labels, while, "The Godfather", is duct-taped to his father's favorite chair.

Christopher Walken is an amazing actor that deserves more recognition than he has been given. If there is an actor who can play a more sinister, purely evil character, without raising his voice, I have never seen him. This role is comparable to the part he played in another film when he introduced himself as the Anti-Christ. As brilliant a, "Player", as his character is, there is also a pair of low level goons that are the mob's equivalent of Laurel and Hardy.

The R rating is appropriate for the violence, and language that may or may not offend some viewers. There are no, "adult situations".

5-0 out of 5 stars A movie to watch time after time
I don't exactally know what made me watch this movie. I think my dad picked it up from some $5 bin and one day while bored out of my mind I picked it up a random movie and decided to watch it. But I am glad that I watched it for sure. It is a movie that I have literally watched twice in the last week (well that could be due to the fact that I have nothing better to do...) and cracked up thru both times. and everytime i watch this movie knowing the ending I am still questioning who the inside player is and how everything is going to end. basically it is in my top 5 favorite movies of all time and it is a movie tht i recommend to everyone who likes dar comedies and doesnt mind blood and cussing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christopher Walken the Great.
Great script, great directing, great acting, great movie. it is a blend of crime drama and thin satire. it combines very smoothly the abilities of great actors (Christopher Walken)with the exuberance of young prospects. and Dennis Leary was born for his role in this motion picture.
this is a must have for any christopher walken fan, and movie lovers in general. you will not be dissapointed, especially with the deleted scenes and alternate endings extras. enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1 of my favs
christopher walken is a mob boss kidnapped for ransom by a bunch of college kids who didnt plan well dennis leary is the mob boss hitmen coming to find the kids who kidnapped his boss to compound the problem the kids cutoff the mob boss fingers then regret it and panic a dark comedy/thriller many people have not seen cause its an independent film buy this killer dvd today ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Lacked a Sense of Magic
I enjoyed this film, but while watching I kept thinking that what was needed was the sense of wonder that Steven Spielberg brings to many of his films. Vanessa Redgrave co-stars in this film, "Rumor Of Angels", and she is much better that the limits the character placed upon her. She is striking with her white hair and ice blue eyes, and visually was perfect for her character. The young boy, Colin Rogers, in the film was very good, and when he was onscreen Ray Liotta was good but seemed to be a bit miscast. The performer that got the most from his role was Ron Livingston playing the perennial superficially slow, but incisive role.

The movie was best when it had only the elderly woman and the boy she was teaching on screen. When other characters appeared that often seemed to be more of an intrusion, and their reason for interceding often seemed weak. The ending was a bit of a stretch and was the type of scene that separates spectacular direction from the mainstream. Handled well it would have been a very moving moment, handled as it was it came close to generating a chuckle, which was most definitely not the response the director was searching for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where has this been hiding?
A RUMOR OF ANGELS - a film I don't recall seeing advertised for theater public consumption - is like that rare find on a misty beachcoming afternoon. Here is a story so simple yet so rich that it should be viewed by a much larger audience. Yes, Vanessa Redgrave fans will of course pick up the DVD on the merits of her enormous gifts as an actress. Or perhaps word of mouth will spread the news that someone cared enough to make a life-affirming film in the midst of all the action/implosion noisemakers. Very simply, the film is based on a book 'Messages from a Soldier to his Mother' that opens the window to the concept of what happens to us when we die. The journal kept by Redgraves' character ( Maddy Bennett, a gnarly old woman who is a loner but sensitively in touch with her take on this world and the one after) is eventually shared with an emotionally devastated boy of 12 to help him accept his mother's accidental death, a death for which he feels responsible. It all works well as a story without becoming maudlin, due in no small part to director Peter O'Fallon and his sterling cast. Not only does this damaged child find solace about the question of death, his wonderfully colorful mentor Maddy teaches him about music, about living, about forgiving. The musical score is beautifully enhancing in the form of Mozart (Symphony No. 39, a two piano sonata, and the exquisite choral Ave Verum Corpus). The physical settings are magnificent, the camera work, set dressing, editing, and of course the luminous gifts of actor Vanessa Redgrave all make this a film worth seeing and owning. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great "sleeper" movie
This is one of those "sleeper" movies. Sleeper movies are ones that seem to never get any attention in the media, etc. I'm not sure why it didn't, because it is an outstanding movie! It is really beautifully done - with a combination of personalities. After watching this on one of the cable channels, the first thing I did was come to Amazon to see if it was available! I don't buy a lot of movies, but this one is a Must Have! I can hardly wait to get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth watching!
This film has some of the same plot and setting elements as
"Man Without a Face", and has a 'generational bridge' similar to that which "On Golden Pond" did so well.

It is about a young boy who becomes friends with a crabby old lady. Both the boy and the lady (played wonderfully by Vanessa Redgrave) have lost loved ones--- the boy having witnessed his mother's death in an accident only a few years before. It is a case of help from outside the family being more effective than help from within the family. I suspect that this would happen a lot more if we did not have to keep our kids away from all 'strangers'.

Both the boy and the old lady fill a special need for each other at one certain time in their lives. Unlike most films, there is really no one to hate in this one-- that in itself is rare. You actually wind up liking everyone in this movie-- or at least I did.

I would have done a different ending had I been the director-- the one used is not very subtle and was difficult for me to believe... not the basic intent of it, but the media it used. You will know what I mean if and when you see it.

The box said PG-13 and mentioned some 'brief drug references'??
HUH? The old lady won't take her medicine-- Geeze! Some very mild profanity.

A special treat in the film is the music!

I watched the VHS version, but by all means go for the DVD-- I was cheated out of 1/3 of all the scenes with the "fit to your screen" version.

I give it a "5" out of "5" with a few reservations. The technical guys should have asked a few ham radio operators about the way transmitters work (you have to have a receiver also!), and 'keys' don't make tones just by themselves. But all in all, a very good effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rumor of Angels
This movie is guarnteed to warm your heart on the coldest of days! If you've ever found yourself wondering about the possiblity of life after death, this movie will clench it for you. Yes, it's a tearjerker, but it left me with a feeling of comfort and calm. I just finished watching it on cable, and I'm here to purchase the DVD for my own library! ... Read more

Here's another gritty independent film that tries to invade Tarantino territory by casting Christopher Walken--that most reliable of indie-film actors--as a Mobster who gets chummy with a group of preppie-like young men and becomes the victim of a kidnapping scheme. One of the kidnappers (Henry Thomas) has a sister who's been abducted by another group of kidnappers, and they've bagged Walken for his Mob connections and negotiating power. What follows is a game of psychological strategy in which the desperate group of guys slowly lose their advantage to the smarter, more experienced gangster--even though they've got Walken tied to a chair. The situation turns volatile when the young men start to doubt the wisdom of their strategy and suspect betrayal within the group, and Suicide Kings turns into a talky, repetitious thriller only partially redeemed by Denis Leary's cagey role as Walken's Mob lieutenant. The movie's a showcase for its cast of rising talent (including Jay Mohr, Jeremy Sisto, Johnny Galecki, and Sean Patrick Flanery), but not even Walken can hold it all together. What's best about the film is Leary's sinister presence in a peripheral role and Walken's trademark villainy, here toned down to a steady, simmering menace. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Las Vegas: Then And WOW!
This DVD has three separate sections, each lasting approximately 45 minutes. "Stories From The Strip" begins with a brief history of Las Vegas, from the legalization of gambling and prostitution, to the era of Benjamin 'Bugsy' Siegel and the Flamingo Hotel. This is followed by the arrival of Howard Hughes, which began the era of the corporate takeover of the casinos. Steve Wynn began buying properties and opened the Mirage in 1988, among the first of the hotels with a specific theme. Later he opened Treasure Island, a more family friendly casino. Steve Wynn's latest creation is the beautiful Bellagio, the most opulent casino in the current era of the megaresort. Speaking of megaresorts, the Venetian hotel is also profiled. A brief mention of adult entertainments and the proliferation of wedding chapels nicely completes this section.

"Destination: The Strip" also beings with a brief history of Las Vegas. This is followed by a brief history of Sin City's world class entertainers, including the always popular showgirls. The swinging era of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr. (the Rat Pack) is followed by the greatest entertainer who ever lived, Elvis Presley. Wayne Newton, Siegfied and Roy, Lance Burton (an excellent magician) and Danny Gans (a great comedian and impressionist) are also mentioned. The Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Circus Circus and the Rio Hotel are featured for their unique offerings to visiting tourists. A visit to the natural beauty of Red Rock Canyon makes a nice contrast to the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas. "Thrill Rides, Las Vegas Style" is the bonus feature. It shows the Big Shot ride on the top of the Stratosphere tower, as well as the roller coaster outside of the New York, New York casino. Bungee jumping, water slides and helicopter rides are among some of the other thrill rides featured in this section. It's an interesting extra to go along with the main sections of this well made DVD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars thirtysomething.....please!!!!
Add me to the list of people waiting not-so-patiently anymore for ALL the seasons of thirtysomething to be made available on DVD! I watched that show religiously, and it felt like seeing parts of my life played out on the screen---I could relate to the characters so well. I tried to tape all the episodes when they were run on Lifetime TV years ago, but I would immediately purchase mint copies of them on DVD if they were available. The producers have already released their more recent series, like "My So-Called Life" and "Once and Again", so what's the hold-up with this one? -- which beats them all by far!

5-0 out of 5 stars 'thirtysomething' DVD's long overdue
What happend to these characters? the last episode left us hanging. Not in a Melrose-style cliffhanger sort of way. But we never really got to say goodbye to these characters. Though it seems a reunion show is a long shot, the series on DVD seems long over due. Till this day, "thirtysomething" remains the best drama series ever aired on prime time television. Though critically acclaimed at the time, the show wasn't a huge ratings success. By the first season the showed had gained an unfair reputation of being whiny and slef-involved. An unfortunate and inaccurate label for a quietly groundbreaking show. Though the first season was a bit uneven, it quickly evolved into a well written, moving, and entertaining show. It lacked the gimmicks and high concepts of today's flashy and grim dramas. These were ordinary people, personalities we could, at times, alternately identify with and hate. We cared about each one even if you didn't like them. Some of the bigger episodes got a lot of attention. Nancy's struggle with cancer earned Patricia Wettig a well-deserved Emmy. Michael's epic battle with Myles Drentel were about as flashy as the show got. But the quieter moments were some of the show's strongest. Gary's untimely death, Ellyn's wedding, Nancy and Elliot's divorce were all amazing storylines. The writing, acting and directing of the show reached amazing highs at different points of the series' relatively short run. I applaud ABC for keeping the show on as long as it did. Certainly by today's disposable programming standards the show probably wouldn't have lasted more than it's first season. But it's high time the series was released on DVD. With "Once and Again" available, why not this groundbreaking show? I'm sure many fans would be dying to get there hands on a complete set and put there home made video collections to rest. Thank goodness for Lifetime's airings of the show. Oh and by the way, if you're gonna release it, give us some extras. Deleted scenes, commentary, documentaries and cast participation would be amazing to see. I believe E did a great 30 min doc on the making of an episode.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Waiting...
Still waiting for one of television's finest moments to appear on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enough already
Every other televison program that aired more than two episodes has made it on to DVD. They've even got Wonder Woman on DVD if you can beleive it. Thirtysomething was one of the most influential tv programs of my generation. I would give anything for it to released on DVD and based on the thirtysomething web sites out there, many others feel the same way. GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT - PUT THIRTYSOMETHING ON DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Still on TV in Germany!
Well folks. Who would believe it. I am lying awake at 3am in the middle of downtown Hamburg, Germany. You know, one of those "Lost in Translation" scenes when the body thinks it is in another timezone. I switch on the telly, and what should I see, but "thirtysomething". I get excited for a moment, until the words come out, in German, no English subtitles. My heart breaks.

My wife and I "grew up" on a steady diet of thiitysomething, just before we entered our own third decade.

So it lives on. FYI, I watched what was left of the show just to reminisce. Unfortunately my memory couldn't fill in all the words, but once the DVD (ever) appears, we can't wait. I'm going to see if is on sale in Germany, and then I'll just have to perfect my German language skills. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Aw, come on!
The season's over, so I come onto this site expecting a DVD release date, yet there's nothing slated. What a jip! Ah, well. Summer re-runs and all that jazz. Life is good.

I haven't been this involved in a new television show since the Sopranos first premiered. And now that we have to wait until we all start collecting Social Security until season six finally arrives, I decided to find an alternative. I saw the promo for "House" and was interested. After the very first episode, I was hooked. OUTSTANDING show. Great writing, great ensemble.

Great main character.

Greg House is one of the most interesting characters to come along in a while. Sarcastic, mean-spirited, misanthropic, brutally honest and with a heart of gold. Truly worthy of the "complex" handle. And Hugh Laurie... wow. If this man doesn't recieve an Emmy or a Golden Globe (preferably both), it will only reaffirm my belief that the people in charge of running those awards things suck moose balls.

Not a single weak episode; this is one of those shows that progressively gets better and better until finally crashing into the legendary "cliffhanger" finale. Can't wait for season two!

World affairs can wait; this has to be released on DVD as soon as possible.

There's a scene where House is interviewing applicants to replace one of his underlings. A young kid walks in and basically attests that conformity is the enemy and how he admires Dr. House's attitude towards life. House fires back with a comment about conformity and an Asian tattoo the applicant has on his wrist. I mention this because it's the hardest I've laughed at a television show in years. One of many gold moments. Watch the re-runs. Support this show!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best thing that's happened to TV in YEARS!
It's been so long since there's been anything on TV, anything at all, to sit up and watch on Tuesday nights.I can't wait to have this series on DVD!Hugh Laurie is brilliant, yeah, but we already knew that (grin). The ensemble cast is terrific (the best performances from Laurie wouldn't be as effective without the supporting players). The writing is solid, solid, solid, and -- wonder of wonders!there's character development and continuity!Ai yi yi!

Rather than start off on some of the wonderful things about House I'd better just shut up and say, Can't wait for the DVD . . .

5-0 out of 5 stars British Import Hugh Laurie: A Treat for American Audiences
House, M.D. is bar none THE best television drama of the 2004-2005 season.FOX scored big with this hit.The recent episode "Three Stories" is the best episode I've seen on televion in YEARS!Hugh Laurie gave the most outstanding acting performance that should see him winning major acting awards in television.A British import, Laurie is a welcome treat for American audiences.

The supporting cast and the writing are top notch, especially the dialogue involving Dr. Gregory House.House's sharp yet caustic quips, called "Houseisms," are quickly becoming infamous among the show's exploding fanbase.Thisshow is smart, and smart is sexy.Special effects of the human body give House, M.D. a cutting-edge feel.

Season 2 promises to be every bit as good as House's freshman season, and that is no easy feat in today's television. However, House, M.D. can't miss ... It has all the right stuff.

I can't wait to add the DVDs to my entertainment collection alongside other classics such as X Files.

5-0 out of 5 stars YES. YES. YES.
