4-0 out of 5 stars 2 STARS BASED SOLELY ON TERROR OF TINYTOWN THE REST STUNK
Well, I've been curious about this movie for years and now I've finally seen it: "The Terror of Tiny Town" (1938), a Western/musical with an all-dwarf cast! In many respects it's just a typical Western-- dashing hero attempts to save/woo gorgeous gal and fight off cattle rustlers at the same time (one such rustler tries to frame the hero for murder). The film starts with an average-sized man introducing the diminiutive stars; including the hero, "Buck Lawson" (played by Billy Curtis, who has been in several movies and even has a walk-on in "the Incredible Shrinking Man".)

"Tiny Town" is populated entirely by little people(or "midgets" as some have called them). They ride ponies instead of horses, but everything in town seems scaled for average sized people. Thus the image of cowboys sauntering UNDER half-doors into saloons! To be honest I think SOME of the "dwarf" actors were actually average-sized children. In one scene, a barbershop quartet sings and a "dwarf" in a chair sings along in a much deeper voice than you'd expect. That "dwarf" looks more like an average-sized little boy in reality.

But then more than a few of the (adult) little people in the cast look like kids (but aren't)-- not just height-wise but they also have very-young-looking faces. You almost think it's a film of kids playing adults (ever see "Bugsy Malone"?) but they are indeed dwarfs.

You get the typical elements of an "oater" (Western), from shoot-em-ups to a seductive female singer in a saloon; some very bad puns ("smallpox", "half-pint"); a hero-and-girl duet that will conjure up images of Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald (all together now: "when I'm calling you-u-u-u"--though to be honest, the songs in "Tiny Town" are VERY forgettable!)...a dwarf drinking a huge beer stein, and a duel in a shack where dynamite is about to go off!

So is it great or horrible? Kind of in between; unusual enough (in that it has an all-dwarf cast) to see at least once, but cliched dialogue, weak songs, etc....still, now at least I can say I've seen The Terror of Tiny Town!

(PS--I must add that in many respects the film is the type that exploits little-person actors for their size instead of whatever other talents they may have. How many dwarf actors out there go to a casting call and immediately are told, "ah! We'll make you the leprechaun...the tiny space alien...one of Santa's elves..." etc. instead of more substantial roles... )

SADLY I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT THE OTHERS WERE VERY DISMAL. I WOULD BUY THIS PURELY FOR THE PRICE AND THE TERROR OF TINYTOWN ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great but also not so great
I have to say from the onset that the quality of this set was extremely good. But, I also have to say that I was expecting more. SHAME ON YOU, AMC!!
I was expecting (hoping) to see the original (1949) opening credits and theme song. But, what I got was a cleaned up version of the distribution opening like the ones that TV Land used. I would have gladly given up quality for the original opening and closing.
If you are a true, and by that I mean older, fan of The Lone Ranger and are looking for the pure, genuine TV show, this is not for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST early Lone Ranger set!!!!!!
This set contains the AMC Network remastered and audio-enhanced version of the first fourteen episodes from the first season of the Lone Ranger TV show, airing from september through december, 1949. The episodes are clean and sound better than any 1949 televeision program has a right to sound in 2004. In short, I am VERY happy with this 14-episode set!

As far as the DVDs themselves go, there are basically no extra features, but what do you expect for ten bucks? At least the screens are very professional and easy to navigate, not amateurishly done like the ones for a lot of old TV shows on DVD.

Get this set for the EARLY Lone Ranger and the Wea Corp set for 19 episodes from the END of the Lone Ranger series, and you'll see the best from the beginning and the end!

I only hope AMC continues to issue future Lone Ranger sets through the run of the series. ... Read more

Grab your mask and six-guns, kids, 'cuz the Lone Ranger's back andbetter than ever! Once again, the retro-wizards at Rhino have expertly packagedthis welcome trip down TV memory lane, serving up six complete 22-minuteepisodes of the popular shoot-'em-up series, starring Clayton Moore as the LoneRanger and Jay Silverheels as his faithful sidekick, Tonto. The firsttwo black-and-white episodes (from 1949) are included as bonus features, reminding us of the masked man's origins, and four consecutive color episodesfrom 1956 show the series at its peak of popularity. The colors have faded a bit(otherwise these shows look great), but the action's still as brisk as ever;this is kid-stuff produced with intelligence and skill, with well-cast villains(including Glenn Strange and General Hospital veteran John Beradino) andpunchy stories that will still delight any baby boomers who look back fondly atTV's golden age. --Jeff Shannon ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The pilot episode is not time comressed.
After reading a claim of time compression by another reviewer,I checked the time of the pilot and it is 22 minutes and 29 seconds and not the 21 minutes that he claims.
It has to be remembered that this was the pilot and not a regular episode so comparing times is not valid. Also if it was time-compressed the voices would be one semitone higher as they are on PAL versions of American shows in whuch the shows are sped up by 1/25th of a second. The voices sound exactly the same on the pilot as the other episodes.
My verdict on the show, four episodes with clear pictures and good sound. A good job done by Rhino on this production.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pilot episode TIME COMPRESSED!!!!
Notice how everything in the first episode or pilot is un-naturally rushed. Listen to the music. Check it's running time. Then check the running time of the additional episodes. The pilot 21 min. the others 25. Rhino has released this otherwise great show in a TAMPERED with digitally time compressed/edited version. All dvd collectors of classic t.v. want versions better, sharper and at the very least UN-CUT then those shown on Nick at Nite and T.V. Land. Rhino did us no favors with THE REAL McCOYS (EDITED), THE LONE RANGER (EDITED) and add to their list My Favorite Martian!

5-0 out of 5 stars I like old time tv shows
I have always liked black & white tv programs!{ in FACT I STILL OWN A 20INCH BLACK AND WHITE TV SET} my favorite martin ran on tv when I was kid. today I like the program even more because it is clean and it is still funny after all those years! I would love to see more of the programs released on DVD. I don't mind that some older prints have minnor defects in the film. it is the story and the plots that our the most important to me. I realize that rino did the best they could with the prints they had to work with. the recent passing of ray watson was a great lost to me. I would recommend this disk to anyone looking for funny and fresh stories. I detest the foul mouthed south park that every "thinks is so good today" we need more clean comdy on television today.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem
Startlingly good comedy from a bunch of pros. I hadn't seen these episodes in thirty-five years, and I was amazed at how fresh, light, and full of heart they were. Watched them with my kids, 6 and 9, and they both loved the episodes and keep demanding more. Get to work Rhino! Rhino did the best it could with the source material, but one doesn't watch these episodes for the David Lean directorial qualities: just the wonderfully haywire plots and the tight, consistent characterizations of Bixby and Walston. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bob Denver Rules!! Cute Family western!!
Bob Denver rules in this cute family western. It's a must see!!

3-0 out of 5 stars History only.
It's Gilligan's Island of the west. A wagon train with Denver, Forrest Tucker, and a group of forgettable "castaways". Denver and Tucker aren't bad. The writing, direction, photography, production, sets, and acting are terrible. It's done by many of the same people that did Gilligan's Island, but they didn't seem to care much about this program. I will admit that since it's just a pilot episode and Gilligan's pilot wasn't that good either maybe it would have made it if it had more time to develop. Denver and Tucker have good chemistry. The banker and his wife have little air time, for good reason. The school teacher is not a good replacement for Russell Johnson. The saloon girl is rough and tumble not soft and sexy like Tina Louise. The girl from Petticoat Junction (I can't remember her name) was alright in Dawn Wells roll, but she spent too much time lost and getting horrid lines. Even Denver fans might find this program too much, but I think it's worth it for 5 dollars. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Sci-Fi and Laughs
"My Favorite Martian" is for Science Fiction what "Bewitched" and "I Dream of Jeannie" are for Fantasy: a sitcom based in a fantastic scenario. Bill Bixby (later Doctor David Banner in "The Incredible Hulk" TV series) is Tim O'Hara, a journalist in which roof a flying saucer fells. The occupant of the saucer is a Martian with retractile antennae and the capacity to became invisible and levitate objects. Stranded in Earth, the alien is forced to disguise himself as O'Hara's Uncle Martin. For then on, O'Hara and Martin lives in a "Odd Couple" situation. The Martian's unfamiliarity with Earth customs provided much of the comic situations. The high point of "My Favorite Martian" was Ray Walston's characterization of Uncle Martin. The chemistry between Walston and Bixby was a decisive factor to the success of the series. Walston can be seen in 1999's big screen adaptation, as Uncle Martin's (Christopher Lloyd) fellow countryman, stranded here in Earth since the sixties. The series opened in 1963. The first two seasons were in black and white, and the third in color. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If it happens......
It will be the hit of the year!
But for the people who can make this happen, don't forget The Green Hornet, another William Dozier/Greenway Production.
This is a long awaited DVD box set that is overdue.Currently no offical DVD release is available and we all want to see The amazing Bruce Lee as Kato, and Van Williams as The Hornet and the stunning Black Beauty.
Wake up people, this is a must do just like Batman!

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN
We all love this show. Right? And we want season box sets. Right? Well it may not happen that way. I believe the studio that released the LOST IN SPACE tv series will release this. That's IF they choose to do so. Which could mean split sets. 2 volumes for Season 1 and at least 4 volumes for Season 2 considering that was a whopping 60 episodes, and back to 2 volumes for season 3. And you know what? THAT WOULD BE PERFECTLY FINE WITH ME. Because it's a lot better than not being released at all. In fact, come to think of it.., the split LOST IN SPACE sets may have been a testing of the waters for this show. SO GO! GO NOW! TO THE ATM, HIT THE FAST CASH BUTTON, AND BUY THOSE LOST IN SPACE SETS YOU"VE BEEN PUTTING OFF. Oh! And write nice reviews about LOST IN SPACE on AMAZON. While you're doing all this just keep humming the BATMAN THEME to yourself. IF.. YOU... DO... NOT... OBEY...MY...COMMANDS...IT... WILL.. BE...YOUR... FAULT... THAT... The BATMAN tv series never got released. Then again, what do I know? I could be totally wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mind-blowingly cool!
Wow! We have a great local station in Chicago that plays only classic TV (MeTV, Channel 23, Chicago). Today, they are playing a 6-hour Batman marathon, and even though it is the sunniest, most beautiful day of the year thus far after a long winter, I am so wanting to stay in and watch. I did have the great pleasure of showing my young children their first Batman, which they greatly enjoyed. I had to drag them away or they too would have watched until 6.

Man, these shows are SO much fun. They are just super cool. Adam West's earnestness is beyond description. The groovy sets, snappy, campy dialogue...all I can say is wow! I love how BM & R are so un -buff in their skin-tight suits. Its not that they're flabby, but by today's standards, they seem to have no muscle definition. I love it.

I was given a box set of the first season of Dukes of Hazzard, and while the camp value was fun for a couple episodes, it just doesn't have much staying power, viewing it as an adult. But Batman...it just keeps getting better. I must get this DVD when it comes out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Da-da-da season one!!
Season one of Batman is chock-full of fun for the whole family. Kids are going to love the comic book appearance, and older viewers are going to appreciate the double entendres and in-jokes flying at them faster than the batcopter.

Bruce Wayne (Adam West) is the caped crusader. Together with young ward Dick Grayson (Burt Ward) as Robin, he protects Gotham from crime. Police Commissioner Jim Gordon (Neil Hamilton) and Police Chief O'Hara (Stafford Repp) are incapable of fighting crime on their own.

The dynamic duo lives at Wayne Manor with Alfred Pennyworth (Alan Napier) and Aunt Harriet (Madge Blake). The `Aunt Harriet' character was created specifically for this series so any suggestion that Batman and Robin were gay icons would be defused. Personally, superhero sexuality had never crossed my mind while watching this TV series, I was only interested in seeingBatman and Robin save the day (as usual).

This season (1966) has 34 episodes of comical hjinks. Each episode was a 2-parter which aired on different nights during the same week. This filming technique allowed for a greater scripting depth than would have been expected from a comedy genre made in the pop-wild 60's. Camp was indeed king in this Gotham City.

My favorite episodes include "The purrfect crime/better luck next time" which introduces us to the Catwoman (played by Julie Newmar during both this season and season 2). It also hints at the sexual tension existing between Catwoman and Batman. They are on opposite sides of the law, but this pair still feels for each other.

`Instant Freeze/Rats Like Cheese' has Batman and Robin battling Mr. Freeze (George Sanders) who for the sake of this TV series is really Dr. Shimmel instead of Victor Friese. This episode is memorable because Batman and Robin (despite all of their bat-gadgets) cannot recover from being frozen on their own and subsequently must receive treatment from the `Super-Hypotherm-De-Icifier Chamber Mark VII' machine located at Gotham City Hospital. Batman and Robin are crime-fighting superheroes, but they are not invincible or immortal.

Series aficionados will want to note the important trends begun during this season.

`The curse of Tut/The pharaoh's in a rut' is important because it is the first episode creating all-new villains specifically for this TV series instead of attempting to borrow from the Bob Kane detective series (which WASN'T happy go-lucky). At this point this villain roster expansion does not date itself as being set in the 1960's.

Jerry Lewis provides the first batclimb cameo appearance in `The bookworm turns'. These episodes had ironically aired during National Library week 1966. Lewis sticks his head out a building window to briefly chat with the dynamic duo while they are in hot pursuit of a criminal. A whole galaxy of stars and public figures followed his appearance in later episodes. It became a race to see who could get on the television.

The criminal lairs are always filmed `crooked' but there is not any violence as is measured by today's TV standards. Comic-book exclamations conveniently appear whenever there is a fight and no blood is spilt during any of the scenes.

The bat computer is now-obsolete, but for the 1960's and then to a 1980's child making do with a Commodore 64, it was really hi-tech.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holy injustice - Batman's not on DVD.
I watched and enjoyed Batman when I was a kid. Back then, I took it seriously. Now, I'd like to get it so that I can appreciate it for what it is. As a side note, I'd also like to see The Flash on DVD as well. ... Read more
