4-0 out of 5 stars Sights and sounds of Italy in the 60s
This DVD for I Spy marks one of the better episodes -- Sophia. Scotty's visiting his adoptive daughter, and finds she has a lout for a boyfriend. There's some humorous moments in Rome. In Rome Take Away Three, Culp showcases his talents in transforming Kelly Robinson from a happy go lucky tennis player to a hard agent. There's little humor and some good drama here. Real spy stuff. In Tonia, Cosby gets to play the spy pawn with a girl who is being used by the Italian Communists. Good drama, and mix of humor for this episode. In One of Our Bombs is Missing, the episode mirrors a real life event that had happened in 1966. The agents are looking for an Atom Bomb that had been swiped by Italian villagers after a USAF bomber crashed in the mountains. There's too much humor for this episode. It seems to be modeled after Italian "over the top" acting, too. The U.S. Air Force really did have a B-52 that went down off the coast of Spain, in 1966, and lost something like four H-bombs that had to be recovered. If you are a fan of the show, this is a good DVD. If not, there are others that showcase the I Spy TV show better. Namely I Spy - So Coldly Sweet or I Spy Sparrowhawk. ... Read more

Robert Culp and Bill Cosby were the hippest cold warriors on 1960s TV, swinging spies who joshed, joked, and goofed like old chums between tight situations and cloak-and-dagger cases. They didn't merely make the world safe for democracy; they effectively broke the color barrier by giving us black and white partners as both friends and equals. The first DVD collection of episodes includes a pair of unrelated stories from late in the series. "A Few Miles West of Nowhere," directed by Arthur Marks (Detroit 9000), pits the boys against rural small-town godfather Andrew Duggan, a bully who turns the town into club-wielding vigilantes poisoned against all outsiders, especially government officials. Richard Kiel (Jaws from the James Bond films) costars as a giant half-wit who Duggan turns into a hateful henchman. "The Trouble with Temple," directed by Tom Gries (Helter Skelter), brings the boys to Spain where they investigate actor Jack Cassidy, who is suspected of smuggling state secrets, and meet not-so-dumb blonde Carol Wayne, Cassidy's sweet, smart, neglected girlfriend. "Temple" brims over with character at the expense of its espionage plot but delightfully breaks genre expectations, while "Nowhere" rather lazily falls into cliché. Ultimately, it's Culp's charm, Cosby's comic understatement, and the duo's loose patter and easy camaraderie that make these both thoroughly enjoyable episodes. --Sean Axmaker ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Two Hip Spies
Younger audiences may only know Bill Cosby from "The Cosby Show" and Robert Culp from "The Greatest American Hero", but this is the show that set them on their way. This series had the distinction of not only being the first action/drama series one to have an African-American in a prominent starring role, but it also was one of the most expensive shows to produce. Why? They filmed on location around the world. One of the coolest spy shows from the 1960s.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great series, but only a good choice of stories
As a big fan of the series, there are much better episodes which could be released. However, the two episodes here are not exactly bad - and "A Few Miles West of Nowhere" is socially conscious in ways that Star Trek could never hope to accomplish (Trek is phony fiction, I Spy is real life by comparison).

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic TV
It's good to see this groundbreaking tv series on DVD but I would have preferred to see the first two episodes rather than two arbitrary episodes from the middle of the shows run- especially since these seem to be the only two episodes available. Cosby and Culp are at the top of thier game. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I've seen it once and would like my own copy.
My review is simple. I've seen The New Adventures of Heidi with Burl Ives, liked it very much but have not found anywhere to purchase it. Yours was the closest I came, but you had a notification that it was not available--or--when I did place an order for a copy giving all information requested, you said you would send me an email but have not done so. I requested this last week twice but nothing came on my email.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best family film we've seen in a long time!
For Burl Ive fans this is a collector. Great for the Christian family as they sang beautiful prayers to God. Burl Ive's was a believer himself. I can't wait to send a copy to a friend as a gift, who doesn't like movies that may be great, but, they have to throw in bad language. She says, "that's not entertainment to them or their children. It's not a sad movie like so many of the other Heidi's were, but I won't tell you the ending. It is a feel good movie. We can all use that these days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feel Good Movie, great for the entire family
This digitally enhanced version of the follow up to the wonderful classic Shirley Temple family film finds Heidi living with her grandfather (Burl Ives - "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof") in the Swiss Alps. In desperate fear of going blind, he contacted Heidi's cousin to take her in and provide for her. What follows is a wonderfully exciting series of adventures told with the heartwarming style and grace of the author Johana Spyris. A wonderful family entertainment feature which will especially be enjoyed by kids of all ages again and again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great story, horrid DVD
I really like Burl Ives and the story is nice but the DVD is awful. This looks like someome took a very old video tape and transferred it direct to DVD. This DVD played on one of our DVD players, but wouldn't play on our second DVD player (this has never happened before).

Maybe I just got a dud DVD copy, but this was not worth the shipping cost, much less the cost of the film.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Family Movie!!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE HOTTEST SUPERCOUPLE ON TELEVISION!!!!
Johnathan and Jennifer Hart were the quintessential super sexy couple of the late 70's and early 80's!!!! They rocked as the jet-setting, totally in love, detective duo!!! They had it all, wealth, glamour, passion, and no kids!!!
I just loved the way they stumbled on to those unexpected exciting adventures and murder mysteries. They made it look so easy!!! This show worked on so many levels, you had Jennifer who was sexy as hell, and you didn't hate her because she was so beautiful. She was just so lovable!!! Then there was Johnathan, handsome, but not beefcake, had a great sense of humor, and the guy was completely smitten with his adoring wife. Let's face it they had the ultimate fantasy dream marriage that only existed on prime-time television!!!
I hope we the fans of this dynamite show wont have to wait too much longer for the dvd release, and it would be nice to see a current interview with Robert Wagner & Stephanie Powers. God! I can't believe Robert Wagner turned 75 recently, he looks fantastic!!! Stephanie Powers is still pretty well preserved as well. I would also love to see a couple of her best mini-series come to dvd in America, Mistral's Daughter and Deceptions.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2005 DVD REQUEST
I was born in 1970 and watched 'Eight Is Enough' on TV and in syndication (PAX TV) for most of my life. When I grew up I always wanted to live in a neighborhood like the Bradfords and have friends like Tommy with three or more hot, available, sisters...unfortunately, when I did grow up it was during the 80's and I lived in Texas. Needless to say, life was nothing like the television show and still to this day, I have yet to find a community or a group of people that are as cool as the ones portrayed in this show. The last of the 'Star Wars' saga is coming out this month in the theaters and back then the original 'Star Wars' movie had just come out and 'Eight Is Enough', a show which epitomizes the values of an era that has long come and gone has not been given a DVD release like 'The Brady Bunch' or 'The Partridge Family'. I liked 'The Brady Bunch' and 'TPF' but it always seemed fake to me like 'The Monkees' and I never really got into it like 'EIE'. If whomever is in charge of the rights to this show would put it out on DVD with a really cool 1970's-ish cover (NO DOUBLE SIDED DVD'S!!!) and some cool special features I'd buy it in a heartbeat, and be eternally grateful. It's a shame that in the time that we're living in we don't have more positive family role models on television, and instead have channel after channel of reality shows and military/cop dramas that aren't nearly as cool as 'Chips', 'Magnum P.I.', or 'Simon & Simon', in my opinion. Oh, also, release 'Simon & Simon' on DVD and I'll buy that as well. I love that show!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars First Season (1977)
I can't believe that with the popularity of -- and push for -- family programming, this marvelous show isn't on the shelves available for purchase.I sure loved it as a young kid, and I would love to have this one in my home for the rest of my family to enjoy.

Even though Betty Buckley wasn't on the show until the second year as Abby, the first short season was a decent offering.Dick Van Patten as Tom Bradford was maybe one of the best TV dads on television ever.

The first year was so brief, so it would be great if whoever owns the rights would release seasons one & two TOGETHER (like the "Dallas" set).Betty Buckly, after all, was one of the best things to ever happen to this series.

01 - Never Try Eating Nectarines Since Juice May Dispense (3-15-77)
Elizabeth is arrested for drug possession, and David (played by Mark 'LUKE SKYWALKER' Hammil in this episode only - Grant Goodeve took over in episode 2) moves out on his own.
**The title of this episode is really just a clever way that Tom and Joan remember the names of all their 8 kids - Nicholas, Tommy, Elizabeth, Nancy, Susan, Joanie, Mary & David (from youngest to oldes)**

02 - Schussboomer (3-22-77)
Mary's single friend (who's also pregnant--GASP!) stays with the Bradford family and clashes with Tom.Apparently Diana Hyland who played Tom's wife Joan, passed away around the time this episode first aired, forcing them to eventually have the mother character die--and allow Betty Buckly to join the cast as the woman Tom would soon marry!

03 - Pieces Of Eight (3-29-77)
Tom and Joan argue when she insists on continuing her photography career while his newspaper is shut down by a strike.

04 - Women, Ducks & The Domino Theory (4-5-77)
Tommy gets stood up by his date, and Tom and David pretend to be interested in their annual hunting trip (Charlene Tilton gust stars).

05 - Turnabout (4-12-77)
David dates an older woman, played by Adrienne Barbeau (she played Bea Arthur's daughter on "Maude" and Oswald's mother on "The Drew Carey Show")

06 - Quarantine (4-19-77)
The entire family gets quarantined at the house, forcing David to run errands for them "on the outside."

07 - 'V' Is For Vivian (4-26-77)
Tom's sister (Janis Paige) comes to visit and annoys Tom by encouraging the kids too much.

08 - Hit And Run (5-3-77)
Tommy accidentally breaks a window at a church, Joanie meets a land developer who is in conflict with Tom, and Elizabeth lands three dates for the same high school prom.

09 - The Gipper Caper (8-10-77)
Tom's friend 'The Gipper' challenges the Bradfords to a game of touch football. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Your mission: get the studio to release this great series!
The original Mission Impossible is the most innovative, intelligent T.V. series ever produced. It is the only one of the 60s t.v./movie spy series that is not spoofish. It is about an incredibly cool and professional Intelligence team deployed to perform missions that are -- well, impossible. The amazing gadgetry is employed so imaginatively that it seemed plausible, notwithstanding that much of the stuff is still, forty years later, technologically unattainable. James Bond and MacGyver are amateurs compared to the I.M.F. team. Even more fascinating than the gadgets themselves is the way the team operatives interacted like parts in a well-synchronized machine. The cast was wonderful, but no single individual was the star and no one character dominated. All the roles were straight and serious and the characters performed their job each week with dispassionate, clinical efficiency. This all lent such a degree of verisimilitude that actual C.I.A. and F.B.I. agents reportedly watched the show and took notes.

The plots are so intricate that you must pay attention. If you zone out even for a moment, you'll be confused and hopelessly lost. This show is not amenable to the casual watcher or one who suffers from a short attention span.

This is the one t.v. series that MUST be released on DVD. If you have never seen it (forget the Tom Cruise movie) you owe it to yourself to experience it. Therefore, your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to convince the studio to produce this DVD. If they don't think that there is enough interest, they won't make it. So please give Amazon your e-mail address to notify you when the DVD will be out. They will inform the studio how many people have inquired about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent series, much better than the later movie copies
This series was innovative and excellent during the earlier years. After Martin Landau and Barbara Bain left the series, the female substitutes were not as good as Bain and although Leonard Nimoy was good, he was not as good as Landau (who has since won one Academy Award and been nominated a few other times).Steven Hill (recently of Law & Order) played the leader Mr. Briggs the first season; Peter Graves (brother to James Arness) played Mr. Phelps beginning in season two.
As an aside, Peter Breck was one of Barbara Stanwyck's sons in the Big Valley, and was not a regular on Mission Impossible.
For anyone interested in accurate details of TV shows, a good reference is "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows 1946 - Present."
I consider this TV series so good that it is one of the few series that I want in DVD format (VHS tapes just don't last). The review is based on the complete set of IM tapes that have Bain and Landau on them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mission Impossible
I'm 58 years old. This is the only place I could find
to submit a review.

The original TV series of the 1960's is not to be
confused with anything that came after.

Starring Peter Breck (bother of James Arness of
Gunsmoke), Barbara Baines, Martin Landau (husband
of Barbara Baines), and Greg Morris, each week's
episode started out with Breck being contacted by some
unknown department of the Executive Branch concerning
a problem no one else could solve.

The recording always started out with the famous line,
"Good Morning, Mr. Phelps,"and from there presented
the problem (a great help for the viewing audience).
It invariable wound up, "...and as usual, if you or any
of your IMF are caught, the Secretary will disavow any
knowlege of your actions This recording will self-destruct
within ? seconds".And it always did, except that the
setting and the recording machine was always different
each week.

So, the IMF was off to the races, and with that they overcame
the most unimaginable situations using the ultimate high
technology, much of which doesn't even exist today. And
while the plots were usually quite intricate, the sceenplay
writers made them easy to follow.

I'm eagerly awaiting a complete DVD set for this series.
It will certainly take me back to my college years.

To sum it all up, the series was absolutely intriguing,
not to mention highly imaginative.Rather than just
a sci-fi series, the interaction between the players was
very real, as well as quite gripping.
