This movie features the single sexiest, classiest, most riveting performance ever in an Elvis movie. When he sings "Return to Sender", you will see why... Scoffers: Just scoff, and go watch Elton John or Ozzy Osbourne. Sure, they REALLY compare to Elvis, huh?? I don't even think so! ... Read more

A wonderful little movie, with some big production numbers, Broadway Melody of 1940 revisits the old 'mistaken identity' premise. Our hero Johnny Brett (Fred Astaire) briefly assumes his partner, King Shaw's identity (George Murphy) and misses the opportunity of a lifetime to dance with the wonderful Claire Bennett (Eleanor Powell). When King is chosen to star in the big new Broadway show instead of Johnny, he gets only support from his slighted partner. Will Ms. Powell and Mr. Astaire get together in the end? I leave that for you to find out. Look for Frank Morgan (The Wizard of Oz) as Bennett's skatter-brained talent agent, and great dance numbers from all the principals. A feel good-er, and it's timeless.
Terrific tunes by Cole Porter make up a nifty score, which comes to a thrilling conclusion featuring Fred & Eleanor's amazing BEGIN THE BEGUINE. A must-have for film musical fans!

The plot is typical: Elvis falls for two women (that's certainly been done before), and gets into some sort of conflict. This time it's trying to save his girlfriend from her Uncle Gerald, who is after her inheritance. OK, the plot isn't much, but Elvis looks good in some of the outfits he wears in this picture. The songs are not much either, especially the horrid rendition of "Old MacDonald". The best songs are "Long Legged Girl" and "City By Night". At least this is a picture in which I didn't cringe. The dialogue isn't quite as corny as some of the other pictures, and it doesn't get too boring either. A marginal "thumbs up" from me. ... Read more

In Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine - total mindless fun - Dr. Goldfoot (Price - a sly, wicked performance having a hoot of a time) has made a machine to manufacture a bikini clad army of robots who are programmed to seek out wealthy men, marry them and charm them into signing over their assets, before bumping them off. With passing pokes at Princes own AIP films and the Bond films, it is good giggles. Not as sharp as "Comedy of Terrors", it's still great for Prince Fans, people who enjoyed Myers spy spoofs, or those looking for a time-capsule blast from the past, this is an enjoyable diversion! With Frankie Avalon, Craig Steven, Dwayne Hickman, Deborah Wally turning in good support performances, the Supremes giving a catching theme song, and claymation credits it's perfect popcorn fun. Give a skip on the sequel - Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs - not as stylishly done.
There are some great moments featuring the beach blanket stars of the day, including Frankie Avalon, and good ol Annette makes a cameo appearance. The chase scene at the end of the film is a classic! The DVD transfer is great, and the film quality makes this nice to watch. Includes the Midnite Movies standard bonus of the theatrical trailer. To sum it up, this is a silly, silly movie. Don't expect anything profound and I think you'll be surprised at what fun it is to watch.
Especially Susan Hart.
It would be sad to see how the beautiful Robot girls and Susan Hart look now in 2003. Aging spares nobody. ... Read more

Bill Bixby you guys!! he is great in this movie as Elvis's manager and he is funny from start to finish and his chemistry with Elvis is the best i've seen from an Elvis movie (Ever) not overestimating.
The chemistry between Elvis and Nancy Sinatra is very evident...on and off the screne. Great friends and they had a blast making this movie. I recall Nancy saying they would ride around the MGM lot on a bicycle built for two when tour buses would come around and the heads would turn. That sounds like an enjoyable experience to me. The film is enjoyable, funny, and for its time, the racing scenes are action packed. It doesn't get any better than Nancy singing "Your Groovy Self" with the blonde hair, [lightened around her face more for the movie] and those smokey, almond eyes. WOW! BTW, Nancy was the only performer to have a solo song included on a Presley album. Impressive and enjoyable. SPEEDWAY, is a fast paced, fun loving, Elvis flick that just happens to "tickle me". Sorry, couldn't resist. ... Read more

Very predictable as the story goes, missing heiress, cowboy fresh from the rodeo, a temperamental bull, box cars, a ranch, etc. etc. Great songs [if you go for Bing] and a great little DVD - nary a scratch or hiss - nicely cleaned up! Frances - legend has - experienced a problem or two on the set of this flick - not a whisper on the end product - she's a professional to the core and very very contemporary. Great gowns by Edith Head! MARTHA RAYE debuts spectacularly and the 'gal lookin' for a guy' - such an underrated career! Great fun to see over and over again!
By contrast, RHYTHM OF THE RIVER (1940) is a real gas, a brisk, amiable comedy with a sharp script and snappy dialogue. Bing stars as an unambitous pop music composer who ghostwrites smash hits for a society bandleader who's lost his Muse. When the unscrupulous bandleader (deliciously played by Basil Rathbone) has to hire a new lyricist, and she just happens to be the gal Bing was checking out in the elevator on the way up to Basil's office, well... romance is in the air. Mary Martin isn't my favorite actress of the era, but she's fine in this role, and the film whizzes along at a pleasant pace. An entirely enjoyable comedy that features Bing in one of his most cool, cute and urbane phases. Recommended! ... Read more
