I also thought that the music was perfect for this movie. Instead of using a creepy musical score, they used songs from Rob Zombie and other metal groups. The features on the dvd were very good. The audio commentary with Jennifer Tilly (Tiffany), Brad Dourif (Chucky), and Don Mancini (the movie's writer) were both informative and funny. I won't give the ending away, but let's just say that it was unexpected. It was gross and sick...but it was also a perfect ending that will lead to the next Chucky movie.
What places this movie a cut above the usual moronic slasher flick is an OUTSTANDING performance by Jennifer Tilly as Chucky's "bride" Tiffany. I had never seen her in a starring role before, and the whole time she was on the screen I kept asking "Who IS this chick? She's great!!" and couldn't wait to look up her name in the closing credits. -- Definitely not the usual quality of acting you'd expect in this type of B-movie. After she meets her demise and is transformed into a doll, the film becomes more predictable and gradually descends more to the level of your standard Chucky flick. The late great John Ritter's talents seem wasted here in a pretty cardboard role, and unfortunately the two teen leads are never more than the typical generic "kids in distress". But director Ronny Yu does seem to have some notion of his film's place within the horror genre, and there's a wonderful and inspired nod to classic horror and "The Bride of Frankenstein" during Tiffany's transformation sequence. Nice little touches like this, and the fact that this movie does not take itself too seriously and often seems more like a parody of the slasher/Chucky genre, made it even more enjoyable for me. I hear that Jennifer Tilly will also be involved in the sequel currently filming, "Child's Play 5: Seed of Chucky", which should make it interesting. But I actually wish they'd go back and do a PRE-quel to this movie, focusing on living woman Tiffany's life before bringing back Chucky. -- She is one deliciously twisted, mean and sexy momma! This movie has not made me a Chucky fan, but it definitely has made a new fan of Jennifer Tilly out of me. In conclusion, if you're looking for a fun, mindless and light movie just to waste a couple of hours on, this one isn't bad.
This is not a good film. It is a horror movie that is so over the top on ridiculousness that it borders on comedy. I never thought I would see Chucky the killer doll, who I feared so much as a child, in a love scene. Seeing Tiffany the killer doll making cookies for Chucky while they're holding a couple hostage is quite amusing. The domestic dispute that develops between the dolls shortly after this is just hilarious. This movie isn't for everyone. You'll enjoy this if you were a fan of Jason X, Freddy vs. Jason or the Evil Dead movies. If you have a dark sense of humor you'll probably love this movie. ... Read more

Mr. Jackson (The coolest cat in movies today) plays Elmo McElroy, a Pharmacological genius who has been trapped in a state of indentured servitude for 30 years, toiling away making designer drugs for sleazebag drug-kingpin The Lizard (Played by the extra-crispy Meat Loaf). He's created a perfectly legal drug, (Made from ordinary household objects) which he calls POS-51, supposedly 51 times more potent than Heroin and Cocaine. After breaking loose from The Lizard, Elmo makes his way to Liverpool to sell the formula on his own, and finally start living the good life. Unfortunately, The Lizard has sent assassin Dawn/Dakota (The adorable Emily Mortimer) after him; First to kill him, later to keep him safe until he can coerce him into giving up the formula. THEN kill him.... The film plays like a hybrid of Quentin Tarentino, Monty Python, and Hong Kong action flicks, with a distinctly British flavor injected into it by actors Ricky Tomlinson, Robert Carlysle, and Rhys Ifans, all of whom are excellent. Director Ronny Yu is comfortable mixing genres, as shown by the fast-paced action scenes and the laugh-out-loud comedy. I'll never forget the scene in the lab with the skinheads.....Jackson, is, of course, excellent. I haven't had this much fun at the movies in a LONG time; Can't wait for the DVD!

My son has a collection of action figures from movies and video games and the Roos are the best. Their design is so strikingly unexpected! The action sequences are shot very artfully - all these leaves floating in the streams of Power, the resolved fighting of these who HAVE to fight, the total absence of JackyChanesque "funny" grimaces. My son and nephew were obsessed by the movie for days, confronting each other with these - You came uninvited! - - Come on and pla-ay!!!- phrases, having their try at the art of flying kicks. The film is kind, the baddies are redempted at the end but all that with the minimal level of saccharine preaching. I want to thank the Law brothers and Ronny Yu, stuntmen and designers, who made the miracle happen. I've bought the VHS and later the DVD, recommended the film to all my friends who have sons - I want to let the people behind that film know that their effort is very much appreciated.

The fighting scenes were bizarre and interesting to say the least, with Brigitte Lin's white hair strangling and piercing bodies all over the place, and the story was, while not terribly engaging, was not tepid enough to be utterly uninteresting. While the relationship between Sunny Chan and Joey Maan is not as interesting as that of Leslie Cheung and Brigitte Lin (hence the four stars, though I wish I could give 4.5 stars..), the young couple were somewhat convincing. Veterans, Brigitte Lin and Leslie Cheung electrifies in their wondrous renditions of the two doomed lovers. Too bad there's only a few minutes of screen time for the pair ;-( Bride with White Hair 2 certainly is not a bad movie; living up to the original Bride with White Hair's greatness was not an easy task mind you, so the sequal did a decent job. Comparing BWWH2 with other HK wuxia flicks, this one is solid. If you want BWWH2 to give you the same, mind-numbing experience that the original delivers, you're going to be in for a disappointment. Watch the movie on its own, without comparing it to the magnificence of the original. ... Read more

It's a well-told, refreshingly original story, backed up by frequent, expertly staged fighting, all shot amidst picturesque locales and settings in Mainland China. The actors are all excellent, especially the girl who plays the younger sister, a character who spends all her free time caring for and feeding the Japanese outcast, even going so far as to teach him enough of her language to get by. The DVD includes three language tracks: Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. The Japanese-speaking characters speak Japanese on both the Cantonese and Mandarin tracks. This reviewer prefers the Cantonese track because the Cantonese voice actors are livelier and more expressive, particularly the actress who voices the young girl. ... Read more

For The Crow fans who are already familiar with the intensity of Brandon's performance, this is a rare treat--we have proof now that he didn't just miraculously portray The Crow's Eric Draven, but was capable of portraying the angst, confusion and rage of extreme situations in a believable and caring way very early in his too short career. It is hard to believe that Brandon was so young when he filmed Legacy of Rage--he carries himself with a poise and confidence that belies his tender years...he is believable as a man who has suffered the unbelievable. In Legacy of Rage, Lee portrays Brandon Ma, a hardworking Chinese youth, holding down two jobs, and saving his money to wed his beloved. Ma's best friend is Michael, whose father is part of the organized crime syndicate, who is being groomed to take his over the family business. When a Michael sets Brandon up to take the fall for a mob hit, sending him to prison for eight years. Brandon loses his love while in prison, and only later learns of Michael's betrayal. After he is released from prison, Brandon is provoked to revenge to save his beloved and the son he didn't know he had from the power maddened Michael. The fight and shooting scenes are well balance with thoughtful character development. The final confrontation betweenBrandon and Michael is often compared to John Woo style Hollywood action epics, and rightly so...you will rewind it again and again to catch all the action! The initial fight scene between Brandon and the bully is a treat for Bruce Lee fans. Brandon does several "Brucisms," like cracking his knuckles by clenching his fists, and such. This is the only time you will see Brandon emulate his father on film. If you are a Brandon fan, this is a must see...forget about Laser Mission and Showdown in Little Tokyo...this is Brandon as good as Rapid Fire, with distinct foreshadowings of The Crow. Get it.

When the bank threatens to foreclose upon the troupe after an unsuccessful performance, the young actor Wei, encounters the ghost of Sung Danping. Sung Danping (in the tradition of Phantom of the Opera), teaches him to sing. Can Wei save the opera house before the bank forecloses? And what about the mysterious Sun Danping? Phantom Lover was partially inspired by Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'phantom of the opera' but I liked this one a lot better, because it was set in China, and Sung's love for Yuyan was eternal. The musical score was simply beautiful, and Wei was convincing as a young naive actor, down on his luck. I recommend this movie for fans of Chinese romantic movies. You won't be disappointed!
"The Phantom Lover" arguably ranks alongside John Woo's "Bullet in the Head" (Dip Huet Gaai Tau, 1990) as one of the crowning achievements of Hong Kong cinema. With spectacular Gothic sets designed by the late Eddie Ma Poon-chiu and swooping camerawork by world-class cinematographer Peter Pau Tak-hei (whose expansive images demonstrate the full potential of the Panavision frame), this sublime masterpiece represents a sensational marriage of old-fashioned storytelling with cinematic technique. The fast-moving narrative is heightened constantly by director Yu's operatic filmmaking style, a style which he perfected two years earlier in his acclaimed fantasy "The Bride With White Hair" (Baak Faat Moh Nui Juen, 1993), providing a near-perfect combination of plot, characterization and technical virtuosity. The script (by Roy Szeto Cheuk-hon, Raymond Wong Pak-ming and director Yu) is essentially a reworking of "Midnight Song" (Ye Bang Ge Sheng, 1937), an early effort by pioneering Chinese horrormeister Maxu Weibang, though Yu's film emphasizes atmosphere and melodrama over outright horror, and the film's central section - the heartbreaking disintegration of Cheung's relationship with Wu - is played to perfection by an attractive cast, and nicely underscored by Chris Babida's melancholy score. The only false note is sounded by Cheung's contribution to the soundtrack, a handful of feeble songs which struggle unsuccessfully to convey an appropriate sense of heartache and tragedy. Such blatant insincerity may help to explain his less-than-flattering appraisal of the film since its initial release. Overall, there are few Hong Kong films as deserving of a two-disc special edition as "The Phantom Lover", but Tai Seng's region-free DVD (which runs 101m 47s) is a mixed bag. Whereas the 'modern' sequences (set in 1936) should have been sepia-toned with splashes of color - a deliberate artistic choice by the filmmakers - this DVD drains them to the verge of near-total black-and-white, and the full-color flashbacks pale in comparison with earlier laserdisc/DVD editions from the Far East (compare the clips in the accompanying featurette with the corresponding scenes in the film itself). The results are often drab and unappealing. Similarly, Tai Seng were unable to afford a new anamorphic transfer, so the image is merely letterboxed at 2.35:1, with optional subtitles in the lower masking. Though released in Hong Kong with a dubbed Cantonese soundtrack (included here, in 5.1 surround), viewers are urged to select the original sync-sound Mandarin track (also in 5.1), an effective remix of the theatrical DTS version. There's also an English track in 1.0 mono which is fairly sensitive to this particular film's demands. Two separate commentaries are provided by the chief architects of the film's artistic success (Yu and Pau, respectively), and it's here that one learns the film's final cut was assembled in TWO WEEKS (!!), an astonishing revelation which is a testament to the remarkable skills of editor David Wu Tai-wai. By contrast, an equivalent Hollywood movie would have taken several MONTHS to work its way through the editing process! The second disc is a major disappointment: Three featurettes are promised, but they all turn out to be the same documentary repeated in English, Cantonese and Mandarin! In itself, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the filmmaking process, but the packaging seems to indicate three distinctly separate items, which is misleading. Trailers, photo galleries and biographies round out a pretty meager package. Tai Seng are to be commended for treating the film with due respect, but this two-disc set fails to meet expectations. Perhaps a single-disc arrangement (minus two of the three featurettes) might have been a wiser move? Despite its flaws, this ambitious 'collector's edition' ultimately represents the best version of "The Phantom Lover" on home video to date, and is therefore highly recommended to anyone who loves the thrill of Pure Cinema. After all, it's the presentation which falls short of the mark, not the film itself.
Both the original synch-sound Mandarin soundtrack and the Cantonese dub sound great (lead Leslie Cheung's real voice is heard on both). The visual transfer, howeer, is not quite as impressive as I was expecting, as the image sometimes seems a bit fuzzy and drab, lacking the clarity one associates with DVD. Still, it looks better than most U.S. homevideo releases of Hong Kong movies (I'm particularly thinking of Columbia's recent 'Once Upon A Time in China' disk), and some of the "drabness" may be due to deliberate choices on the parts of Yu and Pau, with them favoring a softer image that doesn't work as well on disk as on the big screen. But what about the movie itself? Although engrossing, it didn't bowl me over like 'The Bride with White Hair' did. The story is partially inspired by Gaston Leroux's 'Phantom of the Opera' (it's a remake of 'Song at Midnight,' a classic 1930's Chinese that was in itself a semi-remake of the silent 'Phantom' with Lon Chaney). Leslie Cheung's character is clearly meant to be the most sympathetic (and least murderous) Phantom in any version of this story, but he also comes across as cold and narcissistic, needlessly cruel to the woman (the luminous Chien-lien Wu of "Eat Drink Man Woman') who was supposedly his One Great Love. Cheung is a great actor and an accomplished singer, but I find his vocals a bit treacly, and the music isn't nearly as stirring as the score for 'Bride with White Hair.' Still, I much prefer this to the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical or to any of the various sound versions of Gaston Leroux's original novel. If nothing else, director Yu and cinematographer Pau are amazing visual stylists (it's almost insulting that, after doing this, the only U.S. gig they could get was 'Bride of Chucky'). ... Bride of chucky is the best, being the most dark, gothic and edgy out of all the CP movies. If you like good horror movie classics, or just want to see a doll trying to kill a little kid (or two dolls having sex, as in the cas of BOC) you have to get this collection. At any rate, enough of that. This film was made in the 80s and looks dated but don't let this deter you. It's still good. It's a fun little film about a woman photographer from Canada(Sally Yeh) who is doing a little research on superstitions. She rents the wrong apartment and runs into some ghostly problems. Along the way she meets Chow Yun Fat and Raymond Wong who are both interested in her. Now, this film isn't a horror film, it's actually a comedy and a fairly screwball one. Sally Yeh and Chow Yun Fat are good as usually. But the true star of this film is Raymond Wong. His performance as the desperate/loser/coward character is quite a hoot. The film isn't as good as Mr. Vampire but it's above average fare.
I was however pleasantly suprised. I'm not usually a fan of HK comedy (too much slapstick). But this film held up, really funny comedy (raymond wong is particularly funny, his scenes trying to woo Sally Yeh as chow yun fat tries as well are very funny), and good horror. Many scenes were pretty scary (especially those dealing with a dead security guard). A few problems, overly cheesy (one animation scene particularly was a howl), and an horribly cheesy conclusion. Otherwise, good HK fare
